It's 2018 and I am forced to add new features on project that was deployed in 2003 and lastly updated at 2009.
Best part is that PHP version on the production server is [drum roll] 4.3.8. I found out that this version was the latest at July 2003. On top of that, server runs on Windows Server 2003 and the database is oracle (meaning php driver is needed).
I have spent a WHOLE WEEK just trying to recreate that environment in order to start working on the new features.
Sorry for grumping but I had to take it out somewhere.12 -

What is it with clients who have never even seen a single line of code in their entire lives telling me how long they believe a certain change request should take to code.
I mean, what if I told you that your "seemingly simple enough" change needed an update to 36 class files, 9 oracle stored procedures AND several database schema changes. Also, who the fuck is going to perform a regression test to make sure I didn't break anything? Your Uncle Bob??6 -

--- Amazon opposes Oracle, continues support of OpenJDK until at least June 2023 using "Corretto" ---
As most Java developers have heard, Oracle will change the licensing models of the Oracle JDK and OpenJDK for versions older than 2 years, making creators of commercial software pay for a license for the JDK if they need such a version.
However, Amazon recently released Corretto (https://github.com/corretto), their own distribution of OpenJDK to the public, with an extended support of the Java 8 variant until June 2023.
This will give companies, which still didn't update their softwares' sources to a later Java version, more time to update these. Or, of course, to wait even longer, only to panic one month before support ends, causing some Java developers big headaches over unrealistic deadlines. ;)
Corretto had previously been an Amazon-internal tool, but since, according to Amazon, many of its AWS customers use the OpenJDK, they wanted to release it in order to make it the default Java runtime and development kit for Amazon Linux.
It will also be released on other platforms, such as other Linux distributions, Windows and Mac. Additionally, there a Docker image is available for download.
Thank you for reading!

!!oracle
I'm trying to install a minecraft modpack to play with a friend, and I'm super psyced about it. According to the modpack instructions, the first step is to download the java8 jre. Not sure if I actually need it or not, but it can download while I'm doing everything else, so I dutifully go to the download page and find the appropriate version. The download link does point to the file, but redirects to a login page instead. Apparently I need an oracle account to download anything on their site. stupid.
So I make an account. It requires my life story, or at least full name and address and phone number. stupid. So my name is now "fuck off" and I live in Hell, Michigan. My email is also "gofuckyourself" because I'm feeling spiteful. Also, for some reason every character takes about 3/4ths of a second to type, so it's very slow going. Passwords also cannot contain spaces, which makes me think they're doing some stupid "security" shenanigans like custom reversible encryption with some 5th grade math. or they're just stupid. Whatever, I make the stupid account.
Afterwards, I try to log in, but apparently my browser-saved credentials are wrong? I try a few more times, try enabling all of the javascripts, etc. No beans. Okay, maybe I can't use it until I verify the email? That actually makes some sense. Fine, I go check the throwaway inbox. No verification email. It's been like five minutes, but it's oracle so they probably just failed at it like everything else, so I try to have them resend the email. I find the resend link, and try it. Every time I enter my email address, though, it either gives me a validation error or a server error. I try a few mores times, and give up. I try to log in again; no dice. Giving up, I go do something else for awhile.
On a whim later, I check for the verification email again. Apparently it just takes bloody forever, but it did show up. Except instead of the first name "Fuck" I entered, I'm now "Andrew", apparently. okay.... whatever. I click the verify button anyway, and to my surprise it actually works, and says that I'm now allowed to use my account. Yay!
So, I go back to the login page (from the download link) and enter my credentials. A new error appears! I cannot use redirects, apparently, and "must type in the page address I want to visit manually." huh? okay, i go to the page directly, and see the same bloody error because of course i do because oracle fucking sucks. So I close the page, go back to the download list, click the link, wait for the login page redirect (which is so totally not allowed, apparently, except it works and manual navigation does not. yay backwards!), and try to log in.
Instead of being presented with an error because of the redirect, it lets me (try to) log in. But despite using prefilled creds (and also copy/pasting), it tells me they're invalid. I open a new tab container, clear the cache (just to be thorough), and repeat the above steps. This time it redirects me to a single signon server page (their concept of oauth), and presents me with a system error telling me to contact "the Administrator." -.- Any second attempts, refreshes, etc. just display the same error.
Further attempts to log in from the download page fail with the same invalid credentials error as before.
Fucking oracle and their reverse Midas touch.10 -

Oracle really need to hire a new front-end web developer. Their site is not very beautiful, especially their JavaFX documentation sites.7

Java is so fucking stupid. Literally nobody likes Java. Fucking stupid ass language and every app that uses it is laggy and stupid as fuck. Fuck you Oracle. This is why literally nobody uses your cloud platform. Stupid deprecated shit that nobody uses anymore.
Anyone that uses Java is forced to because the software ware literally made 949349 years ago. Java is just such a stupid language and so fucking laggy. NOBODY LIKES JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE. WHAT A STUPID INVENTION. WHOEVER DID THAT NEEDS TO BE FIRED ASAP. Oracle is such a stupid company. Make something that people actually want to use, because obviously nobody wants to fucking use Java. Nasty ass laggy fucking language.
Fuck you29 -
Why the fuck did Oracle change their policies on the official JDK and made the website nigh impossible to use?!
It was shit from the 90s before, and now its still shit just modern.
Why do I have to register do get the JDK, you know Im going to use the fucking 10min mail. I just wanted to setup a freaking build server and I had to go over your retarded website that for some reason *refreshes* and erases the username field everytime I put in the wrong password. Why?
Why is oracle just outright bad at making websites?! Its always a maze to navigate and now it also takes seconds to even load...
This shit is why everyone uses openJDK and adopt. 3 billion devices running java?! Not with your jre/jdk they are not, because It's a pain to get... Don't me even get started on the mess it does on windows server. Why wasn't my JAVA_HOME set automatically?! I lost almost 2 hours because I trusted your piece of shit software to so the one job it has, even reinstalled it completely...
Get your shit together Oracle, this was unacceptable 10 years ago, let alone now9 -

I dislike the way Oracle deals with Java(for the most part) and believe it to be a really power hungry company full of assholes.
I do; however, know that business is business, i get it. I really do.

A BIG SHOUTOUT TO MY FRIEND @theKarlisK
He is the real MVP.
We both spent the weekend to setup OpenVPN + Pi-Hole on Oracle free tier.
He hand held me through the entire process, was super patient with my silly queries and in fact explained me everything so well that it got imprinted in my mind.
And ofc, he was super quick to debug and resolve issues and handed me all the commands for quick execution.
Super glad to have worked with him on this project.11 -
Newbie just started this week and went changing hibernate settings on us. Changed hbm2ddl from update to create, which nukes the data on every deploy. She thought she was working against her local DB when in fact she was pointed at the shared integration database, thus nuking INT. Through a couple hours of PL/SQL wizardry, I managed to resurrect the data. Within 5 minutes of giving the team the all clear, the data disappeared again...betcha can guess what happened...again!2

It's a job description for an entry level Software Developer role at Apple.
Basically they want
- A Front end dev
- A back end dev
- An iOS expert
- A Gimp/photoshop designer
- A streaming data expert
- An Oracle/Teradata expert
- A Kafka expert ( Not shown in the picture)
And on top of that the guy should be able to learn new tech faster.
Do they want a developer or a fucking terminator?5 -

I read this somewhere :
In my college , One guy accidentally deleted the trash icon from his desktop , He panicked, and headed over to his friend's place with his pen-drive. He copied the ""thrash"" icon from his computer into the pen-drive, came back to his room and copied back the ""thrash"" icon onto his laptop's desktop. He got placed in Oracle later. Sick 😂2 -

When you want only 10 rows of query result.
Mysql: Select top 10 * from foo.... 😁
Sql server: select top 10 * from foo.. 😁
PostgreSQL: select * from foo limit 10.. 😁
Oracle: select * from foo FETCH NEXT/FIRST 10 ROWS ONLY. 🌚
Oracle, are you trying to be more expressive/verbose because if that's the case then your understanding of verbosity is fucked up just like your understanding of clean-coding, user experience, open source, productivity...
Etc.6 -
Yep, today was a Monday. Had a request to truncate some tables. Set up a script to disable constraints, truncate, and re-enable constraint. It ran flawlessly. Too bad I ran against the wrong schema, though. Ran it against a dev schema instead of the requested itest schema, because the dev schema was stuck in my head. Well, I guess I tested it in dev. Against some developers schema. But, hey, it worked flawlessly. Because, you know, when you are pointing at the wrong place, it will always work. Every time.3

I was out sick the day an urgent ETL job I was building would be due, so it got reassigned. When I return, I find most of my code commented out and replaced.
The first step was rewritten, with a comment that reads "Made changes to run faster." What used to be a single execution lasting 30 seconds was now a 4 step process taking 5 minutes, and yielding identical results.
Being a one-time execution (not a recurring job), I'm left wondering why they thought execution speed was even an issue, let alone what about their redesign they felt was an improvement...2 -

Migrated a first customer project from ASP MVC 5 to ASP.NET Core MVC 1.1.
Now running under Oracle Linux, with Apache and MySQL.

I never knew that I was a good mentor at SQL , specially at PL/SQL.
I gave a task to a new member of my team, to fill 5 tables with data from other 15 tables.
I informed him well about data table info and structure. He spended about 3 days to create 25 different queries in order to fill 5 tables.
After I saw the 25 queries, I told him, that he could do it with 1 main query and 5 insert statements.
So I spended 1 hour of training, in order to build, run and explain how to create the best sql statements for this task.
(First 5 minutes)
It was looking so simple at the beginning from starting with 1 simple join, after some steps he lost my actions.
(Rest 55 minutes)
I was explained the sql statements I 've created and how Oracle works.
Now , every time he meets me, he feels so thankful for learning him all those Oracle sql tips in 1 hour.
Now he is working only with big data and he loves the sql.1 -
I'm here in my bed. I can't sleep and in less than 5 hours I will have an important exam. I was thinking that a few months ago I went to a IT company as a school program. I would have to stay there for 2 weeks and "work" for them.
Upon arrival, the guy who had to monitor me gave me a sheet of paper with 5 alghoritmic problems to solve. He tells me to use java and hands me a laptop. naturally with windows. I try to look for some ideas but I can not find anything. I go to the control panel and search for something. Obviously there is a lot of bloatware and nothing catches my attention. then strangely I find something called oracle ... something ... but when trying to open it it gives me an error.
Fuck me. I decided to open notebook(normal one not ++ or something) and start solving the problems trying to remember the names of the methods and the classes based on what I had learned in school. then the guy comes back and looks at me puzzled. I tell him I did not find any IDE for java and the only one I found seem to give me an error. The guy double clicks and the program opens...fucking shit... He tells me to finish the problems and goes away perplexed. I copy the code from notepad to the IDE, I check the errors, I run it and the add some comments and I call the guy. he looks at the code, says that everything seems fine and then assigns me other things to do.
Now. HOW FUCKING STUPID MUST SOMEONE BE TO THINK THAT WRITING JAVA IN NOTEPAD IS A VIABLE CHOICE, AMONG ALL THE POSSIBLE SANE CHOICES I COULD HAVE MADE LIKE TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE ERROR OF THE IDE OR CALL THE GUY... NO. MY LITTLE SHOTTY FUCKING BRAIN DECIDED THAT NOTEPAD WAS A GOOD CHOICE. IF I COULD GO BACK IN TIME IN THE SAME MOMENT THAT I OPENED NOTEPAD I WOULD BITCH SLAP MYSELF SO HARD THAT I WOULD LOSE MY SOULD AND THE LAST 2 NEURON THAT MADE THAT SHITTY CHOICE. I WOULD BITCH SLAP MYSELF SO HARD THAT THE KINETIC ENERGY PRODUCED WOULD COLLAPSE THE UNIVERSE ITSELF. AND FROM THE DARKNESS A NEW UNIVERSE WILL BE BORN. A UNIVERSE WHERE THERE IS NO JAVA OR WINDOWS. A UNIVERSE WHERE MY 2 NEURONS WOULD HAVE MADE THE SHITTIEST DUMBEST CHOICE EVER IN A I LAST MISERABLE SELF DESTRUCTIVE ATTEMPT.
but then I come on devrant and I read about people who did thing worse than writing java on notepad and then everything is fine
PS my English is so bad I had to use Google translate, write an original version, translate it and do a side by side comparison with my translated version to check If I could improve something. Don't now If It improved the quality or not...3 -
Fuck PL/SQL. Fuck Oracle. They're so big they can afford to deliver the most user-unfriendly experience i've ever seen.4

Dear Oracle,
why do I have to have an X server running for your stupid Oracle Database to install?
Why are you sometimes capable of writing good software like VirtualBox, and then fuck up simple tasks like creating a docker image for your fucking Database? (Seriously, try it, you will not be able to set up a simple Oracle Database using their official Dockerfiles)
Also, what makes you think that -4 is the "most appropriate exit status"?!
What the fuck is wrong with you?
Fuck you really hard you proprietary piece of shit!7 -
Oracle SQL Errors are an absolute fucking joke, ORA-GO-FUCK-YOUR-SELF.

Contex: Working on a c++ frankenstein code (mixture of legacy and new stuff whith things depending on the client using it)
User Story: Migration from oracle to SQLite for half of the DB data
Summoner: One client wants to keep using legacy for now, therefore we need an strategy chooser templated singleton...
Satan 666 = Singletons + Static methods + Different compilation units
Result: 3/4 of the files of the full backend being modified for the migration.
Conclusion: When will be loaded on production company will probably lose many clients due to unspected bugs everywhere.

fuck oracle. fuck my company.
Using Oracle VM Manager/Servers to host Oracle Phone transfer solution without support coverage from Oracle.
Requiring Unix sysadmins to update to latest release and not telling that we do not have coverage from Oracle if anything goes wrong.
Gues what.. We've updated to Oracle VM Manager/Server 3.4.5 which was released this year and it uses fucking XEN hypervisor version 4.4.4 which has been deprecated and dead since who knows when. Latest release of XEN is 4.11. But that is not an issue, whatever, enterprise, legacy software, etc.
This fucking update introduced memory leak on the hypervisor which has been reported as per xen 4.4.4 history. Furthermore, we have no support from Oracle which means that I have to dig through mailing lists and limited information on the net since oracle has freakin support wall on nearly each of the major bugs found on that shitty software.
I have no idea whether any newer version of xen will work with that old Oracle Linux kernel or not.
Furthermore, Oracle provided great documentation on how to rollback the fcking update. Reinstall the hypervisor. Riiiight. XEN does not have export/import feature.
eh1 -
Well, I always say that if you going to make things a mess, do it a spectacular way. Today I kicked off a data import job that went bad, and in the process of canceling said job, I canceled myself, and the job went rogue, and became a zombie and ate ALL the system memory, bringing the server to a deathly crawl and throwing a dozen developers temporarily out of work for about an hour, before I was finally able to kill the zombie, and balance was restored to the Universe.

Man why is it that the languages that I like get shit on by like 90% of developers. Whiney little cunts that get mad at css because they think "oh I can just inline style and it'll be fine" No wonder your X looks like fucking roadkill. And I fucking love python. Maybe if the Oracle overlord didn't have a goddamn chokehold on ever major hardware manufacturer python would be more prominent.7

One of the largest companies on the continent. Uses Oracle on AWS RDS with the beefiest resources available. It comes to the point where lowering the number of CPUs boosts the DB performance up (concurrency). Point is - Oracle is sweating hard during our tests. You can almost feel the smell of those hot ICs on AWS servers.
And then someone at higher levels, while sitting on a pooper, has a great idea: "I know! Let's migrate to Aurora! They say it's so much faster than anything there is!"
*migration starts*
Tests after migration: the database on the largest instance possible shits itself at 10% of the previous load: the CPU% is maxed out (sy:60%,us:40%), IO is far, far from hitting the limits.
Is it really possible Aurora will cope with the load better than Oracle? Frankly, I haven't seen any database perform better than Oracle yet. Not sure if it's worth to invest time in this adventure..2 -
What cloud service does DevRant use?

I just created an Oracle account just to comment on a mysql bug report in order to inform people to use mariadb as a fix ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
^w should delete back a word, not to the beginning of the line! This is broken because instead of readline, Oracle's mysql-client uses editline.
Yet why the fuck do you compile mysql-client with editLine wrapper that breaks the common keybindings?
Licenses is why. Oracle wants to avoid using GNU GPL, and readline uses just that, so they use editline since it has BSD. And they just don't seem to give a damn if it breaks usability.1 -
Tell me again why anyone would choose to use Oracle Cloud instead if AWS GCP AZURE if Oracle cant even get their fucking website running?7

Haven't ranted for awhile but here it goes...
In a meeting with a front end user yesterday. They don't like the entry screens on our Oracle ERP system. They want us to provide them with a tool so they can create new entry screens to replace those they dont like. They want full autonomy over that tool and no interference from IT. Oh, and they want unfettered database access to the production data, including full ability to execute DML. I so wanted to say 'Are you high?'.1 -

Joke aside, I'd rewrite current project from scratch to get rid of all the automation and IE dependancies and make it cross browser and all the dead code...and all excess ORMs and especially EFCF..and also make support for db diff than oracle..and no need for ora client installation..
Yeah, I'm a work junky, I have no projects of my own.. one kid is demanding enough of my time.. 😉3 -
I recently decided that I was going to broaden my palette and learn a bit of Java. I've had painful experiences in the past, but it's been a few major versions since I last did anything in it. Then I go to update the OS Java, and IT STILL FREAKING PROMPTS ME TO ADD YAHOO TOOLS TO MY BROWSER!!! ARE WE STILL IN THE 90s? DO YAHOO AND ORACLE STILL HAVE A DEAL? JAVASCRIPT IS NOT THE SAME AS JAVA!!!!!!
I need to relax, just heard my friend saying he knew someone at Oracle ‘you know the company that owns JavaScript’. I just yelled at him.
Ok now CALM DOWN🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😤😤😤😤1 -
You want me to be an expert in advanced data structures, algorithms, dbms, Oracle, python, machine learning, J2EE just to develop apps for you? If I had been a master of all trades, I would not have come to you in the first place.2

So I guess, I'm a technical recruiter, part of the screening process, now, for Java applicants. Yay or Nay? I'm not sure if I should be happy or not, because I hate Java and Oracle
-
Oracle, please get your crap together.
If you really wanted to make an amazing replacement for Java swing, you could have made the scene builder application for javafx not crash every 15 minutes on macOS. Seriously. I can't go more than a half hour without it freezing up and/or having the window disappear, never to open again. I get that it's a complicated program, but it's 10 YEARS OLD. It should have been stable by now.4 -
Question to the Java developers here:
Is it always the case that Oracles documentation and actual implementation don't match?3 -
It's getting spooky
For a considerable number of days in a row, I randomly glance at my clock and it says 15:21.
Oracle is stocking me!!!!!!5 -
IPMI...
2010....
Java Web...
Oracle JDK needed....
Oracle JDK Download requires Oracle Account..... To circumvent as I don't want a motherfugging shitty oracle account tons of googling and loading shit from not so trustful pages.
TLS 1.0 and WebJDK require Internet Explorer.....
And an even older version of Oracle JDK 8....
Broken keyboard input....
As on Laptop for Windows / Internet Explorer additionally struggling with keyboard...
Mounting SMB Share requires password change, as my password contains invalid characters....
Finally getting shit to load GParted...
Taking fucking ages to load.
Broken keyboard input, no pasting.....
Chrooting / input becomes a 15 min exercise.
Actual input necessary on chroot: 1 command.
Actual time needed to get there : 2 1/2 h.
*sigh*
When that one old machine dies noone was aware of. And this one old machine is only accessible via an IPMI... As noone even knows where that machine is.
Weekend dead. Weekend is so fucking dead and overrated.2 -
I want to call out the absolute retard at Oracle who decided that file modes should be read from the envvar called UMASK and be in decimal by default.
They probably never cared about file permissions.1 -
Damn you Oracle forms! And OVM manager, you can go to hell as well. And take everything else connected with Oracle with you please
-
My life was troublesome today, had to help a non programmer to run jar files.
The jar executed well from command line in Windows 10 but didn't work on double click.
Did all the tricks, registry edits, cmd commands and at last I found a miracle tool called Jarfix.
Just double click and all okay.
The root cause of the problem was 7zip.
This bug is reported in the Oracle bug reporting and they have closed it as " Will not fix" low-priority report.2 -
We are moving from Oracle 10g to SQL Server 2019 because Oracle doesn't want to provide support to our legacy 10g database.
It doesn't much sense well anyways god bless us during data migration.
Oh one last thing, fuck business analyst team.4 -
Life of an Oracle Developer ... Day {I've lost bloody count now}
Task: Optimise a 236 line cursor consisting of 7 SQL SELECTS and unions, 39 joins and nested sub queries galore.
"YAYYY" said no one ever ...3 -
I once saw a DBA using two for loops in PL/SQL to join two tables. I wonder if he knew about the "alternative" way to do that...2

WHY IS IT SO FUCKING HARD TO DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE FROM MEGACORPS??
Yes, am looking at you EMC, Oracle and IBM. Either they have tons of portals-e-delivery-shittorama or their softwares suddenly disappear for n amount of time without notice. Mix this up with broken links or CONSTANTLY REBRANDING YOUR SHITTY PRODUCTS SO YOU NEED TO HIRE A PERSONAL ASSISTANT THAT ONLY WORKS WITH TRACKING THESE PORTALS TO HELL
Also, your websites are slow as shit.
Thank you.1 -
New to databases - How is it that Oracle has been around for so long, yet have terrible documentation? Their support forums consists of condescending developers who never actually answer the questions and the forums’ format is just so bad.10

Hey guys!
Have you heard the latest news?
I just found out today!
Oracle is planning to acquire OpenOffice and MySQL! What is the world going to! We'll all have to migrate our projects to FirebirdSQL1 -
WTF intellij DataGrip is way too good. Why didnt anyone tell me this software exists?? I was using the oracle and pgadmin by now. Life could have been so much fking easier if i knew this existed4

boo-yaa!!! It's the 4th day in a row!

When you dual boot ubuntu and windows, then decide to remove Ubuntu because, who ate you kidding, you're not actually using it, then you get bored and want to try the new Linux distro that branched off from arch and vms at the same time so now you're experiencing the wonders of chakra on oracle virtual box....🤔3

Learning aws for months, not enough the company needs to use azure. Learning azure for several months, not enough the company needs to use gcp. Learning gcp for several months, not enough the company needs to use oracle.
When does all of this bullshit ever fucking stop? No matter how much i learn and what i learn it seems like its never good enough. Or its never enough. Its very discouraging. The more i learn the more it appears as if i know nothing16 -
We're trying to use Oracle databases in Visual Studio. They won't install the Oracle developer tools on my system. Life has lost all meaning. I'm floating in an endless void where the only sensations are confusion and the vague sense that someone is stepping on my stomach4

I was introduced to an Oracle dba working for one of the companies licensed for them
I was just starting out a few years in
Was using MySQL and dotnet to develop our system
Cost effective
Bastard gives me a kind of smirking smile after talking about basically representing a fucking catalog of use cases no real development and says "it just takes more to get this position"
Few years later oracle buys MySQL , the product he smirked about
Guess their system was really only good for Wal fucking Mart
Burn in hell oracle !1 -
Why would anyone ever choose Oracle proprietary APIs for building web applications? I'm pulling my hair out trying to fix, yet, another Oracle ADF project... Why? Why?

Hm. in MySQL 8.0.23 (yeah I'm kinda slow at catching up) they changed quite a lot.
- Hash Join implementation
- invisible columns
- InnoDB behaviour, eg AHI / IB

Guess no more MySQL for me.
How should I trust a database whose QA seems completely non existent and where minor version releases change the complete behaviour of the database....
(it's not new per se, Oracle announced that with the 8 GA release minor releases can have new features, but I'm surprised they really keep it up with breaking... Their QA sucked before, but with the new features coming, MySQL / Oracle is dead to me. )
Will be interesting to see in which direction Maria DB goes.... So far it looks good, although they really should think about cutting ties with Oracle / MySQL as a lot of internals have quite diverted....
Fuck Oracle.20 -
Using Oracle ADF along with ADF Faces to build a simple learning management system. No JavaScript, no external stylesheets, all inline styles, no client side validation, doing form submit for every field's onblur event triggering a server-side validation, creating a VO for every damn page requiring data, creating an EO for every DB table or view, adding big-ass custom queries for most EOs to join on multiple tables, frequent N+1 queries, etc.,
Idont remember the rest of the problems5 -
Knowing SQL does not mean knowing all the existing technologies that uses SQL, motherfucker! Stop bragging around that you know Postgres, SQL Server, Oracle and shit.
IT is full of shit talkers and ego, NNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH10 -
Least fav enterprise software? Anything Oracle.
Which reminds me, time to migrate away from DYN :(2 -
Following.

AWS summit, speakers talking about technologies that amazon didn’t build but they provide on its cloud.
All about how it’s awesome to use those technologies on its cloud infrastructure.
Feeling like I’m on some bad advertising summit.
I heard docker, containers like 100s times already.
On one of the slides they claim that 85% of tensorflow workloads are on their cloud.
That’s powerful statement.
Looks like enterprises are all on the way to Oracle 2.0 called AWS.5 -
It's so annoying to set up a vm and oracle DB. Just when you think that you are done with recreating a schema from schema dump, four packages won't compile. And of course they are wrapped and it's the most generic malformed or corrupted wrapper unit error...

WTFFFFFFFFOMFG
Why is setting Java path so frustrating? My $JAVA_HOME is supposedly be in my /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle directory but Nautilus shows up nothing!

Jenkins! Damn you, our possibly corrupted OS underlying Jenkins! Damn you, our failed Jenkins backups! Damn you, me for not knowing better.

OH: We have a DevOps team that does neither Dev nor Ops. An SRE team that are not engineers and a head of SW Dev who said with a straight face today that our Oracle multi-monolithification over the past 3 years was a ‘Digital Transformation'.1

Why is it so f*cking difficult to get an application deployed locally with IntelliJ on a Weblogic <ancient version> application server in debug mode... thank you Oracle!
-
Oracle database with PL/SQL, heavy use of triggers, and viewception.
Sure, let's take what's supposed to be a data store, embed shitloads of logic in it, make sure everything has side effects, and ensure nothing is ever straightforward.
Untracable, impossible to debug and overall a mess of epic proportions!2 -
When your team can't change from the oracle database because the dba team will be out jobs and database links will be lost (people havent heard of apis)... :feelsoracleman:

How oracle can be so big piece of shit? Dude i only need to know wtf a OSB pipeline are doing. Dude, the fucking jdeveloper cant work on my machine, no fucking way, no one version, the shit just crash with fucking null pointers. But is my machine that are cursed, right? OK, lets download their virtual machine environment and finish this. Except THE JDEVELOPER DONT WORK IN THEIR OWN FUCKING VIRTUAL MACHINE, dude, i'm going crazy. Pls, DIEEEEEEE fucking Oracle

Why does java have so many nonsensical limitations? Why? Why can't we have multiple heritage? Why can't we have friend classes? Why can't we make static abstract methods? Oracle, PLEASE.9
-
So the university computer science lab computers run Oracle Solaris 11.........and we not allowed to use an ide to write out Python scripts ,gonna use nano1
-
So what do you think about the path oracle is going with Java now?
The good side is new versions get usable much earlier. lts versions, open variants and many JDKs customized for any need you might have.
But there is also the darkside with their hey lets support Java 8 for ever, as long as their is someone willing to give us much money.
I mean that could be a reason many old-school company will pay instead of making their shit work with newer versions.
The gap between C# and Java is getting closer from faster releases, towards modern features and many more. Maming it more attractive.
But Oracle is making the thing a bit shitty in my opinion.21 -
Does anyone really have an idea of what is going to happen to the Java platform after the eventual release of Java 9?
It seems that most of the public road maps from Oracle have been largely vaporware, or at least significantly delayed. It feels like the major platform innovations like JigSaw, G1GC, etc. have all been released _years_ after they were proposed. Now with the JEE 8 delays - is Oracle making different plans now that the Google lawsuit didn't go their way?3 -
installing oracle 11gr2 database via docker is so easy and quick rather installing to the system
Totally saved my time, now I can have more time for learnig1 -
FYI: Oracle Cloud has 2 servers "always free". Probably useful for some of you. Personal projects n such.
Rant: I've just submitted a customer support ticket coz the sign up isn't working for me.10 -
Just had a recruiter that actually got my attention. Said they need an Oracle DBA that is interested in being trained for DevOps/AWS/Docker, and wanted to know if I was interested. That was a hard one, but I already have great pay, benefits, and perks that I don't want to give up, and they can't guarantee to replace. Now, if I was tired of what I'm doing ...5

what are some valid reasons why a company with 20.x Million customers will ever get motivated to migrate from AWS to, not google cloud, Oracle cloud or the likes; but, to On Premises Cloud.
Wrong answers only.7 -
Our management just won't get what UX is, they call us User Experience Developers building User Experience applications with User Experience frameworks (meaning, Angular). FFUUUU, I'm a webdeveloper. YOU_DONT_DEVELOP_UX.... Just because angular looks better than the standard Oracle Crap doesn't make it UX. >.>3

If Oracle wins in the case against Google, how do you think the outcome will influence new developers and the CS field in general?10
-
Ha! Our Ops Support DBA Manager just asked (tongue in cheek) "if we are now supporting MS Access, too?" To which of course, the answer is no. Business user who install Access on their desktop and use it for business, get to provide their own support. As their Dev DBA, I'll be more than happy to help them migrate their data to SQL Server, Oracle, or Teradata, depending on the Use Case for the data. But, no, we don't support Access. Ever.

So I decided to finish college and get a degree in cs. 1,5 years left woohoo proud...
But they changed the curriculum and now I have to build software in oracle Apex.... Why does this exist? Where can I code? what is this. This is so slow, building software in a GUI. Does anyone here heard of this or even use this...
I just wanted to open my text editor and write some python. :(1 -
Fuck Oracle, fuck you oracle! The stupidest shittiest worst nightmare company with the most user-unfriendly, productivity-killing, illogical, stupid pile of software garbage products ever! And unfortunately I want to extends my worm-fucks to all Oracle employees and maintainers and to the whole fucking community of shit that made up oracle-community and to every conscious being who ever liked, enjoyed or have found the slightest genuine interest of any product tagged "oracle".
I installed the pile of shit a.k.a Oracle 18c and imported a dumb file locally, everything was working in the slightest amount of the word (fine) before it turns to nightmare. I created a C# client to call a stored procedure in that shit of a database engine. I kept getting error related to the parameter types, specifically one which is custom type of Table of numbers. It turns out that the only of doing this is through that shit they called (unmanaged driver), the "managed" doesn't support custom types. So I had to install another package of shit they call (odbc universal install) "universal my a$$ by the way", at that moment, where everything just crashed and stopped working. I spent 3 hours trying to connect to the fucking database to no avail. I shockingly found a folder in my desktop folder called (OracleInstallation) and all windows services related to oracle installation "suddenly" got somehow (re-routed) to that folder.
In conclusion, fuck oracle.4 -
Anyone who is working for Oracle here? If so what do you do and how you feel about working for them?4

If you dont know what to put in a oracle TNS string ... Its ok ... Nobody know what to put in this shit

Been told ill be worming with Oracle DB'S today, as someone who's never touched on Oracle stuff before. Any advice?4

So there's azure data studio, shiny! nice!
Oh hey, wow, an Oracle extension! Great!! Now I can use one tool for all my database queries!
But wait...
Below is the list of current limitations:
- Server management and dashboard are not supported
- Packaged objects are not supported
- Table data preview/editing is not supported
- Query execution is not supported
So you're telling me that you can connect and... that's it?
What's the point? Why??
That's like saying: Here's a toaster. But here's the thing's you *can't* do:
- Toast bread
But at least you can look at it. Seriously, what the ****.6 -
Learning about sun solaris, dtrace, zfs and smf after calling the old sun boxes, my colleagues set up, old garbage.
These guys were ahead of us for ages.
If you ever wondered, where all your ram goes, when your application starts or wgy it crashes without further notice, try dtrace.
If you ever wondered of a sophisticated reliable init system would look like, look for the smf init system.
If oracle would already open source all the old sun stuff and if other companies would start using the illumos distros, the world would be a better.
Thats where the sun peopke went after oracle bought sun and started pissing off the devs of sun. -
For my next internship, i need a Linux distro, which is easy to use and which doesn't need a Lot of resources while using it in Oracle Virtualbox.
Which distro would you prefer, i think About ubuntu but I'm afraid that it would use to much of my limited resources so that it is nearly impossible to code with it.4 -

Today the DBA-team (needed to keep our Oracle mess running) decided to change datatypes in tables that has been in production for 20 years. Without a headsup.
Great success!
Just took us 5 hours to debug good ol' visual basic code......
Why would you do such a thing!? -
because mah eNtErPrisE sUpPorT
big corpos always go with the shittiest software out there just because they can't imagine a world without enterprise support. All that Red Hat, Oracle garbage - it is so annoying. They pay thousands per year for subscriptions and then save on their own workforce, putting clueless idiots in front of their systems. The stupidity is mind boggling1 -
Simple question, I'm writing a coding course that does some cloud stuff.
Which cloud providers actually allow you to limit spending without some stupid "setup a service to nuke everything" fuckery?
As far as I can tell, Azure and Oracle. It's stupid how often this is raised as a concern for beginners and how hard it is to actually limit.8 -
Quick Java question.
Does spending £200 on Oracle certification raise your job market value?
Or is it just a pointless money maker for Oracle.3 -
When oracle employees decide to add new "feature":
How can we add feature X so it can be the user new most terrible nightmare?
When oracle employees decide to update an existed "feature":
We have discovered that the users of feature X have found a work-around to make it useful, we need to update that feature to make it the users most terrible nightmare ever, and we would like to make the upgrade/installation process break everything else installed on their machines without possible way of recovering, and if it worked by any chance we would like to make that process frustrating as fuck.7 -
So, I have never been a big fan of Oracle, for many reasons.
I did not think I would see their executive meeting with Donald Trump to try to take advantage of his comments about their competitors. Comments and attacks which the leader of the country is using to distract from himself.
Business is business, so more power to you. Be as greasy as you want Oracle, but man that's...
Pretty Greasy

I been out of the Java loop for a while and now I read about all this licensing and version horseshit... What the fuck? Are they purposely killing their own product? This is exactly what python, node, go, etc need to achieve absolute dominance.4

Finally nearly finished work today, time for a weeks holiday.
And even better I don't have to think about shitty old red hat 6.2 or Oracle 8i all week!2 -
Good java books for beginners:
Moksh Jawa's book "Decoding Computer Science A"
Herbert Schildt's book (Oracle Press)
The Litvins' book "Java Methods"2 -
I wanted to attend the Microsoft Azure Virtual Training Day just to get the FREE Certification exam voucher but all the sessions until August end are full 😭😭!
PS: I am now an Oracle Cloud Certified Associate (with a score of 98%). Cheers!4 -
Started the weekend early. I finished everything with 15 minutes to spare. And I learned how to create aliases for more than 250 Oracle tables without having to create each one individually. I finished the day, and a stressful week on a high note. Satisfied.3

I took over an application that consisted of 4 MSSQL (2005 at the time) databases, hundreds of tables, thousands of stored procedures, maybe a 1/4 of them actual still being used, external links to more than 20 other databases (MSSQL, Oracle and DB2) which all ran from a single "master" stored proc that was kicked off nightly by scheduled job.
The existing documentation consisted of a single word document, about three pages long, describing how to set up the application... on the Sql Server 6 server it had been originally created on two generations ago. -
Please give your opinions/experience, I'm tired of meetings with the legal team. :(
Can a proprietary software link to a GPL-licensed dependency during runtime?
Can it do if its GPL "with Classpath Exception"? What about CDDL?
Case in point - propriety Java web app needs javax.* libraries (JakartaEE components) at runtime (from project or JavaEE app server), but they are licensed under GPL.
Can they be used or is there any workaround?6 -
I'm learning Kotlin while trying out Android Things and that sparked my interest in learning more about Java platform again. I tripped upon the news that Oracle had change their commercial plans for the platform by going with the rolling release model and limiting LTS releases for paying customers.
Java SE 8 was one of those former LTS releases that was on my computer, leaving me vulnerable, despite that version still being the most compatible with many applications, and that's been on my computer well passed the date they cut off public support. And I'm, like, "WTF!?"
Luckily this is when open source shines at it's brightest. Both the home brew and corporations, such as Amazon and IBM, alike - mostly the latter - both agreed to create their own LTS releases using the OpenJDK code and all disturbing to the public FOR FREE with no strings attached and the sources opened. I'm sure Richard Stallman is smiling with glee.
It isn't a total finger towards Oracle. Java SE is based on OpenJDK with no difference between the two anymore aside from loss of LTS support from the public - that's it. So Oracle still benefits despite the retaliation. Probably?
Did Oracle learn nothing from OpenOffice? If the point was to get users to pay for security then they've failed in the long run because Java is open source. People have used that fact to create their own free distributions that bypass their paywall, making the need to go through Oracle pointless. And I'm glad. Open source aside, security is a big issue these days and the last thing people need is yet another thing to subscribe too.1 -
I just want to know why would I find (all of the fucking sudden) tnsnames.ora and listener.ora localhost changed to local.docker.something?
WHY ORACLE? WHHHHYY?1 -
Darn you to Heck, Oracle! I installed their JDeveloper environment, to see how it's database functionality compared to DBArtisan and PL SQL Developer. It is Eclipse based, and it rendered DBArtisan non-functional. Uninstalled, and balance has been restored to the Universe.4

Fuck you, webdev.
I had to explain to a new web developer about an Oracle database and Toad. Anyone remember Toad? I still remember not too long ago, developers knew the basics of relational databases and available client tools. -
Which product has the most ungoogleable errors?
Right now my vote is Oracle Ops Center. Not even any useful error codes and its obviously blaming wrong things in several cases.7 -
Who the FUCK uses Oracle Cloud?!!!?? Didnt know this shit even existed. What you're so cool and special as shit that its not enough for you to use AWS AZURE AND GCP? YOU MUST USE ORACLE CLOUD TOO? GET FUCKED. NOW I HAVE TO WASTE TIME STUDYING ORACLE CLOUD SO I CAN APPLY FOR THIS SR DEVOPS ROLE14

I'm completly hating having to work with databases at college.
I have to use my department's Oracle server to which I must connect using a VPN that fails constantly and I must use SQL Developer that hangs every single time I want to do more than a single Select with it.
Maybe next year I finish this course unit.5 -

MySQL 5.7.32 breaks innodb zlib compression in combination with xtrabackup.
Oracle started the trend to break GA cycles....
https://percona.com/blog/2020/...
Seems like the MySQL ecosystem finally splits in MariaDB (as 10.5 renamed MySQL to Mariadb) and MySQL.
I hope Oracle MySQL dies.
What Oracle does is beyond madness.
MariaDB 10.5 has it's troubles too. But at least you can look up their sources, check their bugtracker and don't get surprise foot fisting up your arse.8 -
Oracle is being D bag about APIs. I will actively make sure I do nothing to support them in the future with any projects.1

I HATE dealing with Map objects in Java. Much like everything else in Java, the API is far too verbose. What's more annoying is how Oracle seems unbothered to improve it.5

I approach programming with a lot of resentment since I am aware that all of us can have MAJOR fucking shifts in the way we do shit from one year to the other.
Let them find out about a different kind of architecture which uses fart propulsion as a form of interpreting machine code and everything becomes absolete.
And then we are only left with FartScript(Oracle TM)
There would still be node though(he he) -
Anybody here use Azure VPN connections and have some time to answer questions about our implementation? I'm looking to ensure we have isolation between parts of the VPN links.4

Yoo fellow devs... And sysAdmins??
We're tasked with migrating our apps from current HP UX server to RHEL...
Most of our apps run on Tomcat 7 and weblogic...
We also have Oracle DB Enterprise Edition...
Just wondering if any of you out there from the stone age have done this recently... Any tips.. Warnings... Advice on the matter?? -
Oracle 11g DB or whatever version it was!! You need a fucking windows machine to install it, doesnt install on Linux or Mac!! I am a MySQL/Postgres guy, working on it was a nightmare, permission issues, and you need the oracle instant client on your system to communicate with windows, which works after a zillion errors!!
-
Haaaa this moment you understand that, not only there is some old Java running INSIDE the oracle DB but also that it calls the app, that query the db, that run some more java, that call the app, etc.

Does anyone know how install Oracle 11g on Fedora 28? I need it for a college class and I had to distro hop just to install the rpms.8

Team lead gave me a task, fix a script he made to update 28k+ lines that wasn't working (he was busy with other stuff)
So I fixed and tested it in our dev environment, which had about 10 lines to use as test
Worked well, but a single select getting 1 column in a table is taking more than 40 secs, I need this select to run for every line (I tried making it get all data at once but it was getting duplicated entries)
The damn table doesn't have index, I think this will be the longest script I've ever made 😅😅😅 -
Wanna get the next value of a sequence in Oracle? Oh just do :
SELECT sequence_name.NEXTVAL FROM DUAL
Wanna get the current value instead? Try this query :
SELECT last_number FROM all_sequences WHERE sequence_owner = '<sequence owner>' AND sequence_name = '<sequence_name>';
Yeah thanks Oracle...1 -
TL;DR Is there a hackerrank for Oracle PL/SQL?
At my work, we do not get raises, we only get promotions. Promotions are applied for, and then interviewed for. Highest score (plus maybe some managerial bias) wins.
33% of the questions revolve around PL/SQL (and just Oracle DB in general) and the better you explain yourself, the better you score.
Tutorials just don't do it for me. They're boring. I want something interactive. While it doesn't need to be competitive and challenging like hackerrank, I'm looking for something gamified like hackerrank where I can see other people and learn the technology intimately so I can climb the ranks at my company faster.
Does anyone know of something sort of along the lines? All suggestions appreciated.4 -

Oracle while trying to install their database on Windows 10 (both, at least, only inside a VirtualBox): sorry, but the path containins space character. Which is because either your UI dialog failed to properly escape or your installer failed properly handle a native file path, Oracle! Nevermind totally ignoring the OS's UI style and cropping your own error message in the second line.1

Since Oracle is trying to kill Java right now, what should my next big love be?
Maybe C#?
Any suggestions?4 -
has anyone else here the same bad luck as me and has to deal with Oracle APEX? That shitfuckery should burn in the management hell it came from.2

Oracle Java on Mac and JabRef are the reasons I have to move my reference library (> 1000 entries including 12GB of full text pdf files) to another reference manager.
Any suggestions?2 -
larry elison laughs the term cloud computing years ago, now offers oracle cloud but failed to come up with an effective strategy, wants to monitize java.
(but still a billionaire though) -
Competitiveness in technology. 10 to 15 years ago, a handful of companies controlled how the world would develop software (fuck you Oracle and IBM). Now there is a lot less monopoly.1

Oracle Identity Manger. It just feels soooo unfinished and its just so damn tedious to work with! My god. Should've created the whole thing ourselves instead. The time we've used to fix shit.. #meh

This might be a weird one or something that you're not supposed to do
I have a domain which I bought because it was very cheap, I have an old pc which I use as a server and I have to servers on the Oracle Cloud free tier
Now the actual question
Without shelling for a managed dns (which would be more per month than I'm paying for the domain per year), is there a way that I can self-host from my server and then use the Oracle Cloud servers as fallback/failover?
All 3 machines are Ubuntu 18.04 using Apache HTTPD, if that helps2 -
Should I get the oracle certified associate certification? I just took a Java class in college that apparently prepares me for it. But it's $245...

Oracle vs MySQL !
My colleague and I had a long debate on auto increment and sequence :O |Guess who won .. -
Question:
We're building a web app for a customer, he wants us to build it in Oracle Apex. I've had some experience in Apex, and I found it to be terrible.
Searching online I've either found very outdated or biased reports about using it in a business context.
Do you have experience with it, or know why we shouldn't use it? -
I got word that the Oracle Java certification exam is pretty cheap to take for the next four weeks ($25 as opposed to almost ten times that). What's the chance that a junior dev working currently with Java (aka me) can learn enough from the official Java certification course in the evenings until then and pass the exam?4

Anyone else unable to get into Oracle Cloud right now?
When I log in, it forces me to change my password then just hangs2 -
Should I take the Oracle Certified Associate exam on Java 8? I just finished an intro course in college that apparently covers all the topics. It's $245 though.3

No matter how many times I educate them, my colleagues still end up confused between writing conditions in join statement and in where statement.
They think they're both same :'( -
Is there any reason why the actual fuck the OracleDataAccess Driver for C# returns everything either as decimal or string else its a TypeConversionError? Why does it even have the functionality to return an int if that can literally never happen?

I am asking here, because even stackoverflow community don't know the answer...
Does Doctrine DBAL support oci variable binding in Oracle or not? I need to know but there are no answer so far...
Hopefully, someone here knows :)1
