Manager: I can’t believe you use Linux, that is such an outdated operating system. You need to get with the times and move to a more modern one like Windows or Mac. Literally NOBODY uses Linux anymore, do you still go to Blockbuster Video too? Ha!
I’m starting to realize that 80% of my job is resisting the urge to punch this guy in the face. Thanks goodness for remote work.35
Tried to install an existing web dev project in Windows 10:
- Install Atom IDE and trying to clone git repo
- Git missing, installing Git for Windows
- Installing Node (so far so good!)
- npm install
- Python missing (???), installing Python
- Ruby (????????) missing, installing Ruby
- .NET Libraries missing, installing .NET 4.0 for the 100th time
- Visual Studio Libraries for C++ 2008 missing (now you're just messing with me mate), installing 4GB of Visual Studio Libraries
- [drumroll sound]
- npm install breaks with fatal error
- Git for Windows can't be found anymore
Switched to Ubuntu out of frustration:
- Installing Atom IDE
- Installing NodeJS
- Cloning git repo
- npm install
- project is running
Well, I was the One that was scolded. Because I basically took over without asking permission to fix a critical outage.
I fixed it within 3 minute, while the person in question have been trying for 2 hours.
He then got very angry and told me infront of everyone that "dont ever help me out".
Said and done. I never helped him ever since, even if he clearly struggled with everything.
He got fired recently due to incompetense7
I'm drunk and I'll probably regret this, but here's a drunken rank of things I've learned as an engineer for the past 10 years.
The best way I've advanced my career is by changing companies.
Technology stacks don't really matter because there are like 15 basic patterns of software engineering in my field that apply. I work in data so it's not going to be the same as webdev or embedded. But all fields have about 10-20 core principles and the tech stack is just trying to make those things easier, so don't fret overit.
There's a reason why people recommend job hunting. If I'm unsatisfied at a job, it's probably time to move on.
I've made some good, lifelong friends at companies I've worked with. I don't need to make that a requirement of every place I work. I've been perfectly happy working at places where I didn't form friendships with my coworkers and I've been unhappy at places where I made some great friends.
I've learned to be honest with my manager. Not too honest, but honest enough where I can be authentic at work. What's the worse that can happen? He fire me? I'll just pick up a new job in 2 weeks.
If I'm awaken at 2am from being on-call for more than once per quarter, then something is seriously wrong and I will either fix it or quit.
pour another glass
Qualities of a good manager share a lot of qualities of a good engineer.
When I first started, I was enamored with technology and programming and computer science. I'm over it.
Good code is code that can be understood by a junior engineer. Great code can be understood by a first year CS freshman. The best code is no code at all.
The most underrated skill to learn as an engineer is how to document. Fuck, someone please teach me how to write good documentation. Seriously, if there's any recommendations, I'd seriously pay for a course (like probably a lot of money, maybe 1k for a course if it guaranteed that I could write good docs.)
Related to above, writing good proposals for changes is a great skill.
Almost every holy war out there (vim vs emacs, mac vs linux, whatever) doesn't matter... except one. See below.
The older I get, the more I appreciate dynamic languages. Fuck, I said it. Fight me.
If I ever find myself thinking I'm the smartest person in the room, it's time to leave.
I don't know why full stack webdevs are paid so poorly. No really, they should be paid like half a mil a year just base salary. Fuck they have to understand both front end AND back end AND how different browsers work AND networking AND databases AND caching AND differences between web and mobile AND omg what the fuck there's another framework out there that companies want to use? Seriously, why are webdevs paid so little.
We should hire more interns, they're awesome. Those energetic little fucks with their ideas. Even better when they can question or criticize something. I love interns.
Don't meet your heroes. I paid 5k to take a course by one of my heroes. He's a brilliant man, but at the end of it I realized that he's making it up as he goes along like the rest of us.
Tech stack matters. OK I just said tech stack doesn't matter, but hear me out. If you hear Python dev vs C++ dev, you think very different things, right? That's because certain tools are really good at certain jobs. If you're not sure what you want to do, just do Java. It's a shitty programming language that's good at almost everything.
The greatest programming language ever is lisp. I should learn lisp.
For beginners, the most lucrative programming language to learn is SQL. Fuck all other languages. If you know SQL and nothing else, you can make bank. Payroll specialtist? Maybe 50k. Payroll specialist who knows SQL? 90k. Average joe with organizational skills at big corp? $40k. Average joe with organization skills AND sql? Call yourself a PM and earn $150k.
Tests are important but TDD is a damn cult.
Cushy government jobs are not what they are cracked up to be, at least for early to mid-career engineers. Sure, $120k + bennies + pension sound great, but you'll be selling your soul to work on esoteric proprietary technology. Much respect to government workers but seriously there's a reason why the median age for engineers at those places is 50+. Advice does not apply to government contractors.
Third party recruiters are leeches. However, if you find a good one, seriously develop a good relationship with them. They can help bootstrap your career. How do you know if you have a good one? If they've been a third party recruiter for more than 3 years, they're probably bad. The good ones typically become recruiters are large companies.
Options are worthless or can make you a millionaire. They're probably worthless unless the headcount of engineering is more than 100. Then maybe they are worth something within this decade.
Work from home is the tits. But lack of whiteboarding sucks.39
Today was a productive day
Worked for an entire hour.
Then won 4 war Thunder games
Climbed 300 in clash of Clans
Took a nap
Had a beer6
Moving a datacenter, it went bad.

Fuck relationships, the only relationship I can have and maintain is with my Linux or in my databases.3
A memorial for my favorite rant of all time "Why did the chicken cross the road?"
Why did the chicken cross the road?
Assembler Chicken: First, it builds the road ......
C Chicken: It crosses the road without looking both ways.
C++ Chicken: The chicken wouldn't have to cross the road, you' d simply refer to him on the other side.
COBOL Chicken: 0001-CHICKEN-CROSSING.
THEN PERFORM 0010-CROSS-THE-ROAD
VARYING STEPS FROM 1 BY 1 UNTIL
GO TO 0001-CHICKEN-CROSSING
Cray Chicken: Crosses faster than any other chicken, but if you don't dip it in liquid nitrogen first, it arrives on the other side frazzled.
Delphi Chicken: The chicken is dragged across the road and dropped on the other side.
Gopher Chicken: Tried to run but got beaten by the Web chicken.
Intel Pentium Chicken: The chicken crossed 4.9999978 times.
Iomega Chicken: The chicken should have ' backed up' before crossing.
Java Chicken: If your road needs to be crossed by a chicken, then the server will download one to the other side. (Of course, those are chicklets.) See also WMI Monitor.
Linux Chicken: Don't you *dare* try to cross the road the same way we do!
Mac Chicken: No reasonable chicken owner would want a chicken to cross the road, so there's no way to tell it how to cross the road.
Newton Chicken: Can't cluck, can't fly, and can't lay eggs, but you can carry it across the road in your pocket.
OOP Chicken: It doesn't need to cross the road, it just sends a message.
OS/2 Chicken: It crossed the road in style years ago, but it was so quiet that nobody noticed.
Microsoft's Chicken: It's already on both sides of the road. What's more its just bought the road.
Windows 95 Chicken: You see different coloured feathers while it crosses, but when you cook it still tastes like........ chicken.
Quantum Logic Chicken: The chicken is distributed probabilistically on all sides of the road until you observe it on the side of your choice.
VB Chicken: USHighways! <TheRoad.cross> (aChicken)
XP Chicken Jumps out onto the road, turns right, and just keeps on running.
The Longhorn Chicken had an identity crisis and is now calling itself Vista.
The Vista Chicken dazzled itself with its own graphics.23
The ancient Linux distro, presumably the main desktop Linux used by cavemen.
You can still see some instances running these days.6
Windows, God damn you piece of fucking shit.
Why the fuck can't you make networking fucking easy like literally every other fucking operating system in the goddamn fucking world?
Why the fuck can't I spoof mac addresses so that I have the same IP address regardless of if I'm on a hard line or wireless?
Who in their fucking right mind thought that the pro version of Windows wouldn't need to do that?
I don't even like using you at this point, I'm forced to use you for work.
There's literally not enough explicitives that I can chain together to sufficiently convey how much I fucking hate you Microsoft. So enjoy this seizure inducing tourette's mode compilation.
Fuck shit cock piss mother fucker asshole bitch mother fucker sick and tired of your fucking shit Microsoft you fucking cuck piece of shit nobody fucking likes you they only have to use you because no fucking business in their right mind is going to spend the millions of dollars it cost to fucking switch over to fucking Mac or Linux I hope you fucking choking a bag of HIV riddled flaming dicks you fucking piece of shit.17
Hi everyone, long time no see.
Today I want to tell you a story about Linux, and its acceptance on the desktop.
Long ago I found myself a girlfriend, a wonderful woman who is an engineer too but who couldn't be further from CS. For those in the know, she absolutely despises architects. She doesn't know the size units of computers, i.e. the multiples of the byte. Breaks cables on the regular, and so on. For all intents and purposes, she's a user. She has written some code for a college project before, but she is by no means a developer.
She has seen me using Linux quite passionately for the last year or so, and a few weeks ago she got so fed up with how Windows refused to work on both her computers (on one of them literally failing to run exe's, go figure), that she allowed me to reinstall both systems, with one of them being dualbooted Windows 10 + Linux.
The computer that runs Linux is not one she uses very often, but for gaming (The Sims) it's her platform to go. On it I installed Debian KDE, for the following reasons:
- It had to be stable as I didn't want another box to maintain.
- It had to be pretty OOTB, as first impressions are crucial.
- It had to be easy to use, given her skill level.
- It had to have a GUI abstraction to apt, the KDE team built Discover which looks gorgeous.
She had the following things to say about Linux, when she went to download The Sims from a torrent (I installed qBittorrent for her iirc).
"Linux is better, there's no need to download anything"
"Still figuring things out, but I'm liking it"
"I'm scared of using Windows again, it's so laggy"
"Linux works fine, I'm becoming a Linux user"
Which you can imagine, it filled me with pride. We've done it boys. We've built a superior system that even regular users can use, if the system is set up to be user-friendly.
There are a few gripes I still have, and pitfalls I want to address. There's still too many options, users can drown in the sheer amount of distro's to choose from. For us that's extremely important but they need to have a guide there. However, don't do remote administration for them! That's even worse than Microsoft's tracking! Whenever you install Linux on someone else's computer, don't be all about efficiency, they are coming from Windows and just want it to be easy to use. I use Mate myself, but it is not the thing I would recommend to others. In other words, put your own preferences aside in favor of objective usability. You're trying to sell people on a product, not to impose your own point of view. Dualboot with Windows is fine, gaming still sucks on Linux for the most part. Lots of people don't have their games on Steam. CAD software and such is still nonexistent (OpenSCAD is very interesting but don't tell me it's user-friendly). People are familiar with Windows. If you were to be swimming for the first time in the deep water, would you go without aids? I don't think so.
So, Linux can be shown and be actually usable by regular people. Just pitch it in the right way.12
God damn fucking Windows bullshit.
Why is the fuck does Microsoft HATE its users?
Latest updates, and no fuck Windows 11, completely BREAKS all of my WSL environments.
Home directories are gone, or the environments are corrupt and won't even run.
99% of the issues these dense shit-fucks cause are because they RaNdOmLy reboot for their dumbass updates instead of scheduling them with the end user. During these rebots, do you thing they wait for everything to shut down?
They just shut that shit down like they fucking own it. Editors? Gone. Browsers? Gone. WSL Consoles? Gone. Docker containers? Gone. IEdge? Hey, we have great news, we made IE your default browser again! BTW, your upgrade to Windows 11 is free until we force you to upgrade!
I'm so fed up with it.....so fucking tired of it...
The only reason why I even use WSL these days is to ssh into my Linux devices or run some quick dev tests in containers. Why not use PuTTY for SSH? Because it fucking SUCKS that's why.
I'm feeling so many emotions right now over bullshit that shouldn't even be happening. I'm literally at the point that I'm just going to install Linux on this device and just create a Windows VM on one of my hosts so I can still do "work" things that involve leadership.19
Story of onboarding in the age of Corona!
Office is big but almost empty, people are working from home. Guy welcoming me says he is not the one supposed to help me(he is sick I'm told) and the rest of the team is not there. The man I'm talking to is this other guys boss. It's OK I think it will work out.
Turns out this guy helping me is actually the CTO so he does not have that much time on his hands. He shows me were to get my computer and desk and hands me documentation to setup some software.
I spend the time before lunch installing linux, setting up git and some other software. CTO checks up on me once.
Then after lunch nothing...I look for him but he is in some meeting. I find some videos by myself labled "onboarding" on the company website. They are OK. I ask my deskmate if he heard what team I will be in. He doesn't know. I sneak out a little early since I have nothing left to do.
The CTO is now also sick I see in an email when I arrive at the office. Still don't know what team I am in.
I spend the morning reading coding blogs and websites. After lunch I have a meeting. The only one in my calendar. It's about the product software architecture for all new employees. It's good but still no news about what team. I aimlessly read up on some software architecture untill I go home.
I arrive at the office first, only the receptionist is there. I listen to podcasts until a few more people show up. I ask another guy if he knows what team I'm supposed to be in. He doesn't but laughs and says it was the same when he started last year.
I send out messages on slack looking for anyone that knows...still no one knows. I guess Im in limbo now. Perhaps i should just start making coffee for people or something...14
So I just found out that my colleague who I often have to work with does not use a debugger to troubleshoot any bugs at all. Actually, he does not even run or test his code locally either with prints or something similar. He just commits java code directly on bitbucket, no source control, without making sure it compiles and then he runs a CI provided by devops that takes 4 freaking hours to run because he bloated that shit up somehow.
I suggested politely to help him find a more efficient approach and to use my hardware setups for speeding up his work because I assume it must be pretty painful to work with, but he just refused.
That and those "seniors" with 10 years Linux development XP in the embedded field who don't know basic commands like ls, cat and touch and code in notepad.
Fucking me, who the hell am I working with and can someone please end me?6
Found a gray hair and plucked it. 😢 I'm too young for this shit. Whyyyyy oh god whyyyyy.
Linux 5.8 has been breaking my shit. Like, keyboard and track pad stop working. Apparently, a fn key is to blame. Fixed it for now, but can Linux kernel fuck off? I can't have my system break so often. This is the third time I'm reverting or man handling the shit in the last two months.
I need a good expensive fucking vacation. 😢 And a dedicated eye candy (gender doesn't apply) to keep in my line of sight. Maybe then I can recover.
The last 7 days were an emotional rollercoaster. Specifically, from work perspective. I need many hugs. Like, real hugs. Also need good food. 😢
Overall, I shouldn't be stressed but shit is not going great. 😭😭😭21
Story of a penguin fledgling, one of my end users whom I migrated from Win 7 to Linux Mint. She had been on Windows since Win 98 and still uses Windows at work.
Three months before. Me, Linux might not be as good, but Win 10 is even worse. User, mh.
Migration. User, looks different, but not bad.
One month later. User, it's nice, I like it.
Three months later. User, why does Windows reboot doing lengthy stuff?
Six months later. User, I hate Windows. Why is everyone using this crap?
One year later. Malware issues at work. User to IT staff, that wouldn't have happened with Linux. Me, that's the spirit!31
okay just found the package "sl" on linux.
I mistyped ls and my shell told me well you can have this command with the package "sl".
Looked what the package does and well now i have it installed and everytime i mistype ls from now on a SL (Steam Locomotive) runs across my terminal.3
Everyone that says you can't get viruses in Linux because only .exe compiled programs can contain malicious code or some bullshit like this is a fucking retarded
Sorry I had to say it12
My employer doesn't allow us to use Linux; I have to use MacOS because "Windows is sooooo bad".
Fucking hell I'd choose Windows every day if the year over this garbage fucking OS12
The key to survive your job, is to not really care.
But I am that kind of person who takes my job personally, and it becomes a part of my identify, and companies exploit it.6
Remember to regularly defragment your drives on linux. use this handy command.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=1M
dd: Disk defragment
if: input file (the pattern to search for, and should always be /dev/zero)
of: output file (your disk, /dev/sda for instance)
bs: blocsize 1M is fine here17
My GF said today that she had a dream where someone took her laptop, deleted elementaryos and installed windows. She was so infuriated and enraged that she woke up, and it took her like five solid minutes to realize that it was just a bad dream, and her Linux is safe.
I need a new 'main' language to do all my projects in as java is kind of grinding away at my psyche.
Golang I liked quite a lot when I used it for my job a year ago, I'll give that a try..
Golang installed and up and working fine.
Oh, I know lets see if there are GLFW bindings for golang. And sure there are lets go!
Oh I need gcc and mingwex + mingw32 which I will acquire through cygwin.
hmm.. mingwex + mingw32 not found and my drive is almost full. I'll reinstall on my D:\ drive before continuing troubleshooting.
> Delete C:\Cygwin Access denied.
> cmd rmdir c:\test /s /q Access denied.
> Change permissions Access denied.
No problem I just don't own this object!
> Change to be the 'object owner' Success!
> Change permissions Success!
> Delete C:\Cygwin Access denied.
> cmd rmdir c:\test /s /q Access denied.
> takeown /F C:\Cygwin /A /R /D Y Success!
> cmd rmdir c:\test /s /q Access denied.
At this point it would be more efficient to manually open up my ssd, and using a fridge magnet change every single bit to be exactly what I want it to be.
Or install linux.7
Today I finally had to write a function for which the most descriptive name is objectively kill_all_children4
In the Ruhr area (Germany) we have some very old, very strange words with strange meanings. One of those words is ‚Prutscher‘.
A Prutscher refers to a person who does things but never gets a good result, due to lack of knowledge or simple carelessness. Most of the time, Prutschers are people who are interested in certain subjects and often work in the related jobs, but who lack the motivation to properly train themselves, learn what there is to learn and to always keep up with their technologies .
Here are a few examples I've stumbled upon so far in my career:
- Developers in their 60's who read a book about PHP 25 years ago and decided to become a software developer. Since then haven't read anything about it. Who then now build huge spaghetti monoliths for large companies, in which they prefix every function, every variable and constant with their initials and, of course, use Hungarian notation.
- People who read half a fucking tutorial about <insert any fancy js framework here> and start blogging/tweeting about it
- Senior web developers who need to be told what the fuck CORS is and who can't even recognize CORS related errors in their browser console.
- Developers who are the only ones working on Windows in the team and ask their Linux colleagues for help when Windows starts bitchin.
- People who have been coding for 30 years, have worked with ~42 languages and don't know the difference between compiled and interpreted languages in the job interview.
- Chief developers at a large newsletter-publisher who think it's a good idea to build your own CMS (due to a lack of good existing ones, of course).
- Developers who have been writing PHP applications for multinational corporations for 25 years and cannot explain how PHP is executed. They don't even know what the fucking OPcache is, let alone fpm. FML
- People who call themselves professional developers but never ever heard of DRY, KISS, boy-scout rule, 12-Factor App, SOLID, Clean Code, Design Patterns, ...
- Senior developers wondering why the bash script won't run on their fucking Windows machine.
- Developers who consider Typescript to be a hindrance and see no value in it.
- Developers using ftp for deployments in 2022
- Developers who prefer to code without frameworks and libraries because they are only an unnecessary burden/overhead and you can quickly code everything up yourself.
- Developers who think configuring their server(s) manually is a good idea.
You fucking Prutscher. What you have already cost me in terms of work and nerves. I can't even put it into words how deeply I despise you. I have more respect for the chewing gum that has been stuck in my damn trash can for the past 3 years than I do for you guys. You are the disgrace of our profession. I will haunt you in your dreams and prefix every fucking synapse of your brain with MY initials.
As a well-known german band once sang in a very fitting song: I wouldn't even piss on you if you were on fire.
If you recognized yourself in one of the examples here: FUCK YOU!37
I bricked my Manjaro install by interrupting a kernel update like a fucking doofus.
After two hours of painstaking troubleshooting using a live image I finally resolved the issue. And man is that a good feeling. Solving complex problems (at least to me) on Linux is just such an amazing feeling ♥️15
Shit went very well - I am really happy for my future
Hopefully, the bureaucracy will be faster for me :P
Details? Not yet5
I HAVE A NEW LAPTOP!
and it now has a functioning linux 😁
I fucked it up once tho. I removed the entire network manager by uninstalling bluez. How the fuck, I don't know.9
C++ application running on Linux. If customer makes a mistake, I log CustomerIsDumb to kernel message buffer.2
My grandpa is using his computer for video editing and creating photo books. His setup was:
- A 100GB SSD for C
- A 1TB HD for D
He never had more than 6GB free on his C Drive because somehow Windows and his programs filled it all with some utter bullshit which couldn't be removed or whatever.
So I promised him to install Linux for his Emails and Surfing and create a Windows 10 VM for him to use his programs.
The Linux installation from downloading a iso over creating a bootable drive to actually installing it was faster than finding the fucking Windows 10 Iso.
Which was about the same time as installing fucking windows because this bullshit prints out one fucking line at a time and then waits for you to read it for 15 motherfucking seconds before printing the next line.
And don't get me started on the fucking telemetry.18
Just installed linux (Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS x64) because windows update was being a cunt, instantly, it all fell into place and I got it fully running with minecraft (using generic driver, but it actually works pretty well, don't worry I will get the proper one tomorrow) and a desktop icon for it within two hours compare to windows (update) taking 4 days to do barely any updates, not accepting java or graphics drivers, which it requires because fuck opengl with the default drivers.
Fuck windows. Hooray for linux!
Now back to programming...
Thanks for putting up with me but I just need to vent because I felt like I couldn't program (and I didn't) because of FUCKING DOOLALY WINDOWS 8!
Btw thanks to the local charity shop for introducing me to (SUSE) linux when I was like 11, giving me a hope in hell of using linux. I now have around 11 bootable linux disks and 1 bootable flash.3
Interviewer: Yeah so we're hiring you as the person who would build out and own our client-facing web application and related stack.
Dev: Perfect, that's what I've been doing for the past 10 years, I'm your guy.
Interviewer: GREAT SO WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FORK AND EXEC ON A PROCESS ON A LINUX MACHINE!?!?!?!?
Dev: I don't... know immediately at this moment?
Dev: I hate my life
Dev: Somebody please help me18
Fuck chromium devs and their hate for linux. Piece of shit
Screen share with audio is broken under chromium, because some user didn't want the desktop audio appear when asking for input devices, when there's no microphone available.
The thread doesn't mention a specific cause for this besides "for some reason pulseaudio does this"
So what did the gigabrains working on chromium decide to do? Not list monitors (basically recording devices for on desktop audio) at all.
* UI is hard
* Because we say so
* Fuck standards
And they only do that on linux. Windows, which uses a similar concept works just fine. Mac? Yeah, just hacked it in. Linux? GL won't fix
Meanwhile they decide to add all shits of non standard, bug causing events for shits and giggles, but when you actually want to resolve issues you're met with silence and arrogance.
Once again, what a piece of shit. Chromium devs must love making things worse with every passing version8
Linux is an amazing, stable operating system.
Until you decide to upgrade it, then you realise the update failed, your DE is broken and after using Timeshift to restore the system, your GRUB decided to commit seppuku.38
Nvidia might stop being a douchebag about Linux: https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/... Right now, that doesn't change much yet, but it opens a possible road.20
People really need to come up with crazy shit all the time ?
We invent ARM. Then people decide to do Device trees instead of what we had on x86.
We get ARM64 and it becomes the standart.
And now comes the point where it all fucks up.
OEMs start creating 1 DT file for each node. Now they include them all together.
That we can live with. Sorta EZ to follow.
But nooooo thats not enough. We have to be able to change device trees from bootloader.
So we get fucking device tree overlays.
And now you get overlays that overlays another overlay that overlays the base DT. WHAT THE
FUCK. Why. And you get multiple of such cases
Dont get me wrong. Overlays are cool and useful when used right. AKA for what they were made for. Fixing issues in DT. Not adding stuff over working DT. NO.
And ofc in the end you have those overlays compiled into multiple DTBOs that apply over the DTB.
Welcome to ARM64 linux kernel development.12
The reason I don't have friends is because I embed Python code in C++, instead of using pybind like the Linux gods intended us to 😅
If you want to load data from Pandas DataFrame in a C++, I can put some examples on my Github.6
I need to invent time travel so I can go back to Friday morning and slap my past self for thinking that Linux From Scratch might be a fun weekend project. I should've gone to bed four hours ago and instead I've been shouting at LLVM.
It really makes me appreciate the hard work that Linux distro maintainers put in to keep all the pieces up-to-date and compatible with each other. I already want to put my fist through my monitor and I'm only trying to maintain a single virtual machine.12
OBS is advertised as the expert's screen recording and streaming tool, every list on the internet makes it out to be some incredibly difficult program not recommended for newbies.
It's also the only linux screen recorder that works out of the box on Pipewire, records both microphone and system sounds and all configuration was to
1. select recording as my main use case in the setup wizard which is a very verbose English popup, then accept all defaults
2. add a new source, following the instructions written in the box which are also the only instructions on screen after application launch
3. set the output directory (optional) by going to File > Settings > Output > Recording Path, all of which were the first items I guessed. If I had not done this, it would've written everything to my home folder which is a bit dumb but not confusing at all
4. click Start Recording
5. click Stop Recording when done
Some newbie-oriented screen recorders have a more complicated setup procedure than this super advanced experts' tool don't touch without safety gloves and a degree in video engineering.11
Fuck this client's IT department. They're a bunch of Microsoft asslickers.
How am I supposed to push code to your self-hosted GitLab instance if you restrict me to Citrix RDP????? No OpenVPN access because I'm on Linux?? Seriously? Because I am not using any of your laptops?
FUCK YOU DUMBASSES, I COULD DO A BETTER JOB THAN YOU AND I JUST PLAY WITH LINUX.
When I said I only needed terminal access I would have never imagined they were thinking of Putty inside an RDP. What a steaming shit.
Oh you guys don't have a secret management service as any enterprise should? Oh I cannot add a secret management service as part of the solution I am building for you guys because "Hurr Durr yOu HaVe NoT pUt ThIs In ThE pRoJeCt PrOpOsAl sO nO"
Fuck you guys. You guys only don't want to move to the cloud to not lose your jobs. I would be far more productive than relying on you pieces of dumbassery.
They are all having each others back in using shit technology and practices.7
I miss when my job was just about coding, I could spend entire workdays writing C# or TypeScript while listening rock or metal with few meetings in between, being very passionate in programming and computers sometimes I found was I doing so engaging which I spent more than my 8 hours workday on company's code base trying to improve it and my older coworkers were very happy with my code.
Then a "promotion" happened, I went to work directly with a client, a huge enterprise which is working on renovating his internal software and here the fun stopped. Long useless meetings are a regular occurrence, there are absurdly long procedures to do everything (for example since CI/CD is leaky we have to do dozens of workaround to get a microservice deployed) and having very little written documentation this gives an huge advantage to people which actually enjoy to spend their entire workdays on a MS Teams call over "lone programmers" like me which actually feel significant fatigue in doing that (alone sometimes I was able to log 12+ hours of programming daily between work and personal projects while after 3 hours of PP I feel drained) since the information passes in meetings/pair programming and I dread both.
I feel which my passion is still there, I still enjoy coding, tinkering with Linux and BSD, broadening my knowledge with technical books and having passionate conversation about tech but I dread my job, sometimes I try to look at it under a more optimistic eyes but most of the times I just end disappointed.3
I'm forced by my job to use this fucking unusable piece of horse shit also know as a Windows operating system.
And it's not only that I have experienced every fucking corner case bug that is possible to occur in our universe.
Not only that that for last 2 years I seen more blue screen than blue sky.
Not only that forced updates fucked my schedules so many times that now I'm really *afraid* to turn off my computer off because I have zero guarantee that I will be able to restart it in a reasonable amount of time.
No, neither of those broke me.
The thing that kills me everyday is, piece by piece ...
WHY THE FUCK THERE IS NO SINGLE, USEABLE, SANE TERMINAL EMULATOR ON WINDOWS
I JUST WANT TO TYPE SOME COMMANDS, COPY/PASTE TEXT AND SCROLL
IS IT TO MUCH ?????
FUCK ALL THOSE WANKY THIRD-PARTY EMULATORS
FUCK EVERY-COMMAND-LINE-REALATED THING ON WINDOWS
FUCKING USLESS SHIT
CANT EVEN DO SOME SSH COPY/PASTE SHIT
WITHOUT SOME WEIRD CHARACTERS POPING OUT EVERYWHERE.
AND FUCK THAT EVERY ONE OF THOSE MUST HAVE TOTTALY DIFFERENT SET OF KEY SHORTCUTS
AND THAT FUCKING BELL
WHY WOULD YOU EVEN PUT A FUCKING BELL SOUND AS DEFAULT SETTING ??
GO TO HELL MICROSOFT
I WANT MY LINUX BACK7
For the Project Management exam, my university requires us to install a program on our PERSONAL laptops that is meant to take over the control over the entire system during the exam, monitor any “suspicious activities”. The software is closed-source (it’s called Schoolyear Exams), does god-knows-what in the background, takes the control over the entire system and can be summoned through any Chromium web browser.
Don’t get me wrong, I get that you want to make sure nobody is cheating - but at this point, I’d rather write it with pen and paper. Or just provide us with computers for the time of exam.
I decided to whip out my old laptop instead, installed a Windows 10 on a separate SSD, and installed that software on it.
Also it’s very amusing that this software is also mandatory for the Linux exam… But the program can’t run on Linux (it’s Windows and Mac only and doesn’t even support M1 chips).
Working with stuff close to
the system really feels like
I'm working with arcane magic..
At least with Linux I can
look at the source ..9
Interesting. A few hours ago I had a nice domestic conversation with my coleague about robot vacuum cleaners. He was talking about iRobot Roomba and I was talking about Xiaomi. Here's the result!
Interesting thing is that we talked in a *voice* conversation. Over Slack. Over Chrome. Over corporate VPN (openconnect).
Where's the spying link? Slack or Chrome?
My bet's on Chrome.
What does that tell you about the privacy of your sensitive conversations? :)
Hide behind VPNs all you like. If you have proprietary software (or hardware in the case of Huawei) - you're being watched and listened to.
EDIT: I'm on Linux, he's on MacOS9
So now i have Linux installed everything is better than Windows but i want to program in c#... Should i use a VM or a Dual Boot with Windows and KDE Neon?15
🪙 The golden age of tech is coming to an end. We currently live in a world of tech built by engineers and great minds; both Windows and Linux are great in their own ways. PCs are the peak of engineering, both desktops and laptops because of how versatile, powerful and universal they are. They serve engineers, designers and end users. You can do anything you can imagine; because the great people who built it, did it in such way that they themselves could use and enjoy it.
📱 The tech of the future will become ever more limited. The next generation of humans will use Chrome OS gladly and not even feel limited because they never experienced the freedom provided by a true personal computer device. Android OS is already getting ever closer to restricting 3rd party APK installers. Big tech will do everything they can to limit freedoms and make everyone use cloud, where they can charge $ for every damn click.
☎️The consumer-facing tech will become increasingly dumbed-down over time. The programmers and engineers will be still able to use "true" tech, but only for work. In everyday life, they will have to be content with the dumb limited tech.
And there is nothing we can do to stop it.8
I'm creating a "bring with you" Linux install. So I got a 512 GB USB key. (You know, to even have some persistance).
Linux flashing tool : are you sure ?
Got to know the power of python in Linux today, when I accidently executed apt-get purge python* in Ubuntu and all the UI of Ubuntu got deleted and even the terminal couldn't run normally.
The good thing is I managed to fix it.1
Me: I would like to receive external training for RHCSA course and certification
Company: Sure! we will open a ticket for you and keep you posted
Me: it's been almost 3 months, could you give me any updates?
Company: Oh actually you are not eligible! this certification is not aligned with your job description!
Me: But...I use linux every single day and it's one of the main requirements to be able to do my job?
Company: Yeah whatever no need to get certified still..!
Me: Why didn't you tell me that 3 months ago?
Company: Well the process was changed and we decided this certification does not match your profile
Me: What matches my profile then?
Company: certificates in Azure and GCP
Me: But I don't ever use those platforms?
Linux nerds, here is a question,
I have a machine with 32 GB Ram, currently it is using 12.5 G and at the same time I see swap is used 1.55G/2.00G
why swap is used if i have enough Ram ?22
At the institute I did my PhD everyone had to take some role apart from research to keep the infrastructure running. My part was admin for the Linux workstations and supporting the admin of the calculation cluster we had (about 11 machines with 8 cores each... hot shit at the time).
At some point the university had some euros of budget left that had to be spent so the institute decided to buy a shiny new NAS system for the cluster.
I wasn't really involved with the stuff, I was just the replacement admin so everything was handled by the main admin.
A few months on and the cluster starts behaving ... weird. Huge CPU loads, lots of network traffic. No one really knows what's going on. At some point I discover a process on one of the compute nodes that apparently receives commands from an IRC server in the UK... OK code red, we've been hacked.
First thing we needed to find out was how they had broken in, so we looked at the logs of the compute nodes. There was nothing obvious, but the fact that each compute node had its own public IP address and was reachable from all over the world certainly didn't help.
A few hours of poking around not really knowing what I'm looking for, I resort to a TCPDUMP to find whether there is any actor on the network that I might have overlooked. And indeed I found an IP adress that I couldn't match with any of the machines.
Long story short: It was the new NAS box. Our main admin didn't care about the new box, because it was set up by an external company. The guy from the external company didn't care, because he thought he was working on a compute cluster that is sealed off behind some uber-restrictive firewall.
So our shiny new NAS system, filled to the brink with confidential research data, (and also as it turns out a lot of login credentials) was sitting there with its quaint little default config and a DHCP-assigned public IP adress, waiting for the next best rookie hacker to try U:admin/P:admin to take it over.
Looking back this could have gotten a lot worse and we were extremely lucky that these guys either didn't know what they had there or didn't care.
I'm seriously thinking of quitting my job because they use microsoft shit.
You would though that would run on Linux, because you know, it's 2022.
University, first Java practical lesson.
I'm sitting near this guy, clearly hyped up because he managed to install his first linux distro earlier.
After 5 minutes he asks me how to do the task the Professor assigned that morning.
I'm playing dumbass in my head, thinking stuff like "oh big boy installed ubuntu but can't declare a fucking Rectangle class in java lol" (what a dickhead).
I helped him, and then proposed to go out for a quick smoke.
Turns out we're very similar, hyped as hell with linux (like I was at the time), with same CS interests. Still texting sometimes.
Why?! Just why?!
I just upgraded LibreOffice on my Linux machine. To version 184.108.40.206.
Now every time I press save it just selects the save button box. Then I have to press it again to save. What is the reason for such a massive UI fail?
To cope I will probably just hit ctrl-s.8
I'm truly surprised how well Linux is coping with my 32GB RAM dev laptop :)
Currently open and actively used:
1. 2x Chrome windows (70-100 tabs total)
2. 5x IntelliJ Idea projects
3. 3x AndroidStudio projects
4. 2x different grade daemons
Still snappy, still quick af!
I wonder how windows would handle that. From my xp 2 IDEs already were a struggle34
Linux tip: if you're setting up a new computer w/ a fresh install of Linux or you got some new device you'd like to make Linux friends with, don't start by searching for drivers. Start with upgrading your kernel to the newest Mainline version you can. It's very likely it will bring your devices' support with it.
Damn I didn't think I'll like my P1 gen4 THIS much. Even better with a flavour of LMint!14
- Darwin core is open-source (https://github.com/apple/darwin-xnu). Not the case with Windows.
- You can use macOS without using any Apple online service like Apple ID, FaceTime or iCloud. Terminal will still work without restrictions, and any app can be installed manually. It's totally different from Google services on Android, without which most of the apps won't work at all.
- macOS updates are trivially to disable. It's a matter of unchecking "Update this mac automatically" checkbox in software update settings. Not the case with Windows, Windows updates are universally hated among developers for intentionally complex UI and update services being very hard to disable.
- Almost every feature or default behavior you dislike can be trivially disabled with one console command. Features won't re-enable automatically like I heard update service does in Windows. The only feature I dislike that I wasn't able to disable was a notification about unsafely unplugging a USB flash drive.
- Out of the box, you get a sophisticated disk manager that allows all kinds of manipulation on drives, just like what you get in Ubuntu.
- Just like on smartphones, you can trivially restrict or provide access to certain features like camera, microphone, etc. on app to app basis. I don't know how to easily do it in Linux, let alone in Windows.
- Apart from mastodons like GIMP, I find open source apps for macOS to have better UI than their Linux alternatives.
- Objective-See offers useful FOSS apps for macOS, they help with privacy and malware detection: https://objective-see.com/products....
I don't want to start a fight. Please, abstain from commenting on one OS being better / worse than the other. Please, don't comment on Mac computers being better / worse than computers of some other vendor. I'm very confused now because of my Dunning-Krueger thing (read my previous rants), so I just want to present the facts about macOS that I think deserve more exposure.28
Years later the supposed 'cancer' that is linux: a fully featured, and more and more polished FREE operating system running Microsoft development tools, a rich GUI which does away with the crappy windows 98 taskbar, multiple virtual desktops, and steam !26
Funny how everything that seems like an almost general truth about the computer users is conditioned only but the phrase "..excepting Linux users" 🤔
No one randomly recommands operating systems ... excepting Linux users!
No one needs to know how to do <complicated hilly-billy technology> in order to use <generic simple software>!
It seems that we (the Linux users) are all rebels without a cause😅2
If someone who wants Linux to be the future of gaming was able to control the thoughts and actions of the decision makers at Microsoft, Windows 11 is exactly what they would make them release. I can think of no better way to prompt game developers to move their focus away from Windows.7
The convo between my friend and me back then
He: dude I heard you can code can you help me with this coding challenge on codechef
Me: bro, I try to let's check the problem
After 15-30 min we solve the question together
Then after 3 days or so he again meets me
He: do you know about Kali Linux
Me: no man not heard of Linux but what is Kali seems interesting
He: trying to hack WiFi
Me: *getting excited* bro teach me
He: I'm learning too
That day he got to know he can't hack WiFi and I got to know that my friend doesn't know jack shit about Linux, also Linux is awesome
But that moment changed my whole engineering life, I got to learn about Linux and I'm getting good at it every single day since then.
It's been 3 year since I met that fucker.
Tagging my amigo @ashwini0529
Don't you just love it, when Windows lovers community just throws user's concerns and issues right back into their faces? "it works for me!" they say.
On the other hand, Linux sucks. (because it still got a lot of room for improvements!)
Seriously, we need better OSs.11
I just realized a weird thing. It will soon be 6 years since i joined devRant. And while i havent been as active as i was before its still sometimes fun to come and rant or read some rants :)
And for those who know me. Yes i still fuck around with Linux kernel development :)
If you are from the 2016-2018 join time come chat a little in comments :) Wondering how many people still hang out here and how many people names i will recognize :P
Hello there. I'm a junior frontend developer, and I'm starting to think that IT is not for me.
Okay, first things first. This story/rant might be a bit longer than I previously thought, but whatever... :p
I started working in frontend about a year ago.
Now the problem is, that I'm absolutely rubbish with coding, and I'm starting to think that it might have something to do with my personality. While I loved (and still do) doing HTML and CSS, and maybe some JS as well, when it comes to working with frameworks, build tools, TypeScript, and all this *****, I just want to stand up and carefully smash the keyboard through the display. I can't stand the constant cryptic error messages and gazillions of config files, and don't even get me started with TypeScript. This is not how I imagined what programming is like - I know it's my fault, I was a bit naive. I still love making simpler things in HTML/CSS/JS and playing around with Linux, but I lost my will to do any of these even in my spare time. I don't have the patience to feel incompetent all the time with the promise that in a few years, doing this rubbish 8 hours a day, I will get better at it. Some colleagues even talked about it being like Lego and getting into the "flow": yeah... not in my case. There's nothing creative in this, it all feels like a factory line where I have to do the line work but also configure the machines as well...
The funny thing is, I made about the same amount of money working in less prestigious jobs. Sure I didn't like any of them, they were tiring and boring as hell, but at least they were not stressful and frustrating. I'm seriously considering moving to Western Europe and working as a bicycle delivery guy in the Alps, a postman, a waiter, or literally anything else that has something to do with the real world, and leave programming to the actual software engineers (who I deeply respect by the way).
I'll probably add more to this, but I need to go now and meditate a bit. :D11
I want to switch from Windows to KDE Neon. Do you have some tips? Because it's my first Linux installation and i don't want to make something wrong :)6
My brothers friend in high school tried to install Linux on their laptop and the Wi-Fi drivers weren’t included with Fedora for some reason. They didn’t even make a Windows backup USB in case things went wrong 😆😆😆7
I want to replace Windows with Linux on a very old Notebook. It‘s for my father who uses it only for web browsing and Skype.
Can you recommend me a distro?
I think Ubuntu should be fine but I don‘t know.25
-- Best --
> Submitted my notice of termination for my current job
> Found a new job starting next year
> Can switch from Windows to Linux/MacOS in new job
> Got more time to work on personal projects due to the pandemic
-- Worst --
> Huge amount of software restrictions (current job) almost got several projects at work canceled. Maybe its important to say that the core business of my current workplace is auditing so there are a lot of law regulations which then apply in the softwaredevelopment process.
> New managers that do not have the slightest clue of what they're doing
> Online Teambuilding events
> Absurd amount of segmentation of tools and also different coding guidelines that are used at work. E.g. one team uses jira, another trello, another github issue tracker and so on.
I’ve never bothered to try Linux as past experiences with it is not as amazing as people say. What advantages does Linux have to Windows? And it terms of real life usage, such as developing software or websites for a local company, why choose Linux over Windows when the majority of the companies users would use Windows anyway?
All I can think is that I should have a computer specifically for Linux so I can still test things on a Windows computer.20
Like many others: Linux, GNOME, the GNU build tools, Firefox, blender, ...
A few I haven't seen mentioned:
- restic/borg backup4
I am so tired of Windows.
Latest story. I am doing homework for uni. I write it in LaTeX.
My LaTeX editor is vscode. Because there are great LaTeX plugins which can use a docker container for LaTeX. Also vscode has a vim plugin.
I wanted to synchronize my progress, so I installed GDrive Sync and pointed it to my homework directory.
And suddenly compiling regularly crashes. And it's Windows fault.
This is how the plugin uses LaTeX: "First creating some auxiliary files. Then create the pdf. Then delete the auxiliary files.
But sometimes it happens that GDrive finds the auxiliary files. Then it will open the file in readmode. And upload the contents. And here's the problem. When it's opened, it cannot be deleted. This crashes the pluging. Could have been programmed better, but hey, in Linux, it could be deleted.
Files in Linux are garbage collected. Well, not really, but same effect. When a file is deleted, it disappears immediately, but is actually only deleted when no more process has it opened. Meaning, you could delete something that is being uploaded. It would be continued to be uploaded until GDrive is done, at which point the file is deleted. GDrive would see the change and delete the auxiliary file remotely.
So, it is inherently better at throwing multiple applications together without them conflicting with each other.
Yesterday, I was finally fed up with all of that and installed regolith on my system. But I am worried. I don't know what my uni will throw at me. Stuff like zoom breakout session. There is no guarantee that not someone needs something done that's only possible in Windows (or only possible with reasonable effort in Windows). And if it's just turning in an assignment as a power point presentation.
Plus I want to game. And I have more than just steam games.
Well, anyway. Today is the day where my KVM-switch and second graphics card arrives. Think I have that covered.
Also gives me the opportunity to spin up a separate windows for applications I don't trust.
So, I guess my setup just made a huge leap to a better state.7
I've read some posts about how bad Windows is lately and I'm just wondering how some can break their installations so bad.. I mean like multiple BSODs just for installing updates, or just don't get their windows to work at all. I've been using win next to Linux(Debian/Ubuntu) for quite some time now and never had those kind of problems, also on pure Windows 7/10 PCs.2
Besides firefox and emacs there is also Linux, the library emacs uses to interact with the computer hardware
Hey, guys, little help here I am about to graduate and I want a job as Linux support engineer or junior sysadmin but apparently, the job experience required for these jobs is 1-2 years. Any suggestions how should I proceed with this because my other option will be to opt for software developer then.
Thanks in advance.3
Well shit, now I (re-)learned C,
And all I want to do is program in C,
But all C jobs are like -
"C guru that merged to Linux kernel"
"Driver writing low level must know Assembly"
"Military-grade realtime hardware design"
Isn't there a C job that's like Python - "here I wrote this script in 5 minutes and spent the rest of the day playing Eve Online" :D :D10
Apple’s ecosystem is restricting, Windows 11 is shit and I don’t like Linux much.
Doomed, aren’t I?16
1. Update some packages
2. Linux machine stops working soon after
4. Go get windows machine to help me troubleshoot the issue
5. Starts windows update on startup
6. Panic some more1
Dependency hell is the largest problem in Linux.
On Windows, I just download an executeable (.exe) file, and it just works like a charm! But Linux sometimes needs me to install dependencies.
At one point, I nearly broke my operating system while trying to solve dependencies. I noticed that some existing applications refused to start due to some GLIBC error gore. I thought to myself "that thing ain't gonna boot the next time", so I had to restore the /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ folder from a backup.
And then there is a new level of lunacy called "conflicting dependencies". I never had such an error on Windows. But when I wanted to try out both vsftpd and proFTPd on Linux, I get this error, whereas on Windows, I simply download an .exe file and it WORKS! Even on Android OS, I simply install an APK file of Amaze File Manager or Primitive FTPd or both and it WORKS! Both in under a minute. But on Linux, I get this crap. Sure, Linux has many benefits, but if one can't simply install a program without encountering cryptic errors that take half a day to troubleshoot and could cause new whack-a-mole-style errors, Linux's poor market share is no surprise.
Someone asked "Why not create portable applications" on Unix/Linux StackExchange. Portable applications can not just be copied on flash drives and to other computers, but allow easily installing multiple versions on a system. A web developer might do so to test compatibility with older browsers. Here is an answer to that question:
> The major argument [for shared libraries] is security, that if there is a vulnerability in a commonly-used library, then only that library has to be updated […] you don't have to have 4 different versions of a library installed
I just want my software to work! Period. I don't mind having multiple versions of libraries, I simply want it to WORK! To hell with "good reasons" for why it doesn't, and then being surprised why Linux has a poor market share. Want to boost Linux market share? SOLVE THIS DAMN ISSUE!.
Understand that the average computer user wants stuff to work out of the box, like it does in Windows.58
In several occasions I run rm -rf * in the wrong folder (or wrong server!!).
No big deal so far, but I had to spent more time to redo my work since Linux has no fucking recycle bin like Win!
So I created this helper function to give my brain a few seconds to think before my finger hit Enter.
echo "WARNING:Delete all files? Type fluffycat to proceed"
if [ "$x" = "fluffycat" ]
echo "Deleting all files..."
rm -rf *
Hehehe... I am a genius 😎18
Can anyone recommend some good Linux user group?? I wanna learn more and connect to people who like it.14
God I fucking hate macs.
I got a mac at work. I tried to install ubuntu, with rather questionable results (unfortunately, I expected that) - so I tried to get mac work for me the way I like a system to work. I needed to download slack, simple enough, right? Ha, you wish. It's gotta be done through Apple store, so I went to create an Apple ID inside the Apple Store form. And, well, it just errored out on the submission. Great start. I went then to the settings and created an account there, great success, went back to Apple Store. Unfortunately being logged in at the system level doesn't mean you are logged in to the store. So, I went to log in to the store, simple enough, right? No, nothing's simple with Apple. After logging in I got a message that the Apple ID has not yet been used with Apple Store and that I need to review the account's setting. So, I click the "review" button and... I'm presented with a log in form. Yep, a perfect log in loop. I can't log in because I can't review the account but I can't review the account because I can't log in. Fun :)
You can't just go to the web admin panel for your account to review it for Apple Store, that would too be too easy. After a bit of searching I've found an answer on StackOverflow. You need to log in to iTunes. Through a fucking MUSIC APP. To install a free application from the store you need to log in to a music app. Yes, we're all mad here.
Then, after finding out that to be able to use side buttons on my mouse I need an app that I need to manually restart every time I restart the machine and that I need to have an app to fucking transfer files from an android I need another fucking app, because reading a storage of a linux-based system would be too standards compliant - something in me broke. I found out that installing windows on a mac is officially supported.
Supported doesn't mean that it's easy. I tried to install it trying different solutions from SO, but each time I would get an error that Windows couldn't modify the boot partition. Turns out that even wiping the drive and reinstalling OSX doesn't remove residual files on a boot partition and Windows installer is not allowed to modify them. It took me hunting into some shady looking site to actually find this answer. I have no fucking idea how long it all took me, but, finally, great success, Windows, WSL, side buttons working, I can even install slack from an installer. I just wish I could have those hours of my life back.19
I have fucking HATED Windows 10 from day one. Now I'm hearing there are new vacillations of this genius programming train wreck that I think is designed to force monetize Microsoft's business model.
After a short while I managed to get to a point where I can maintain W 7. In fact, I'm using my old computer right now. Because I could not get this rant to load onto Devrant website. If you are reading this we know that it is because 10 sucks consistently.
I save my files onto a backup hard drive so I can find 'paper file' type solution for whatever random crap might block me at the keyboard. In fact, I still use paper and file cabinets so "technology" doesn't bring me to a screeching halt every time something like "no record of that account" or "wrong password".
Why the hell does my PASSWORD work from W7 but not from W10?! And it's getting WORSE by the day! I'm about to take a fucking hammer to my new fucking computer. And to that guy who smarmy says something to the effect of 'don't be such a pussy... just fix it and you will be happy.' Well. Fuck you too!
Now. That being said. Anybody have a suggestion on what to try next? And don't say something like, 'take your computer to Micro Center or Geek Squad'. I've done those guys twice each. And for a small phenomenal fee they have each time made things slightly worse plus lost parts of my saved data each time.
Oh. And "reset to previous" doesn't work either.
Probably better at this point to attempt to solve my own problems wrong for free at this point. Maybe I'll learn to program in Linux or some such thing.
for suggestions please contact me at
I'm tempted to sell my MacBook Air M1, I found which I can be equally productive which a 2011 ThinkPad T420 with Lubuntu, Tmux and NeoVim.12
I miss working on Linux. It’s so bare and I get to tinker with a lot stuffs. I like working with Mac though, less problems and more productivity; but it’s just tiny bit bloated.
I think the perfect balance is having two machines; one Mac and the other Dell XP 15 loaded with Ubuntu.1
What things do people around you keep repeating related to programming?
For me it is surely "linux is soooo permissive", which is true but still funny when people start saying it unrelated and simply as a mean to jokingly explain why something doesn't work how is supposed to. Even if the problem is not even on a computer4
1. Windows is unreliable and crappy.(I have had a lot of bad experience with windows.)
2. Mac is good but doesn't have a lot of things to tinker with.(Used mac, it runs on specific hardware only, for rich people who don't know how to use computers or for chad programmers )
3. Linux is the best. (The real programmer shit that has it all.)
What do you think?46
I'm wondering if devs would still play that russian roulette in linux if the one drawing the short straw gets it's GPU fried up 🤔
Or at least somethibg like that.2
There are lots of tech jobs other than Software Engineer out there. Linux System Admins are needed, DevOps and SREs are needed, various operations roles (X system admin), cybersecurity roles exist. Don’t feel pressured or assume that being a coder is the only option.3
I really like SQL Server, but my dbms (ssms) is like 2 years old, I installed it from a predownloaded exe we had.
Can you please let me download the update without asking me to register?
Everyday for the last years I had to see the update notification and resist the urge to click it and be prompted with a login page
Dearly, a Linux user who develops in .NET, sometimes13
Oh my.. I think I'm enjoying molesting kubernetes :)
A while ago I got pissed at k8s because with 1.24 they brought backward-incompatible changes, ruling my cluster broken. Then I thought to myself: "why not create a Docker image that would run kubernetes inside? Separate images for control plane, agent and client"
Took me a while, but I think tonight I've had a breakthrough (I love how linux works...)!! The control-plane is spinning up!! Running on containerd
Still needs some work and polishing, but hey! Ephemeral k8s installation with a single docker-run command sure sounds tempting!
P.S. Yes, I know there is `kind` and 'kinder', but I'm reluctant to install a separate tool that installs a set of tools for me. Kind of... too shady. Too many moving parts. Too deeply hidden parts I may have to fix. Having a dumb-simple Dockerfile gives me the openness, flexibility and simplicity I want. + I can always use it as a base image to add my customizations later on! Reinstalling a cluster would be a breeeeeeze6
- what do you use InternetExplorer/Edge for?
- to download Firefox/Chrome
- what do you use InternetExplorer/Edge for?
- to download LinuxMint iso1
What desktop do you like for Linux? Looking at budgie and kde. I used gnome and unity way back but didn't care much for either.22
VLC media player
100's of low-level NPM packages I don't know the name of2
CPU time? Wayland, or Linux.
I/O? Firefox or VSCode. If I'm pedantic about not counting dispatch as usage then VSCode because Firefox is just a mediator between me, the OS and the webapp at hand.2
>_< why, the fuk. do simple python packages have 'snap' packages???
there's a pip file here, just...run pip ffs. why not?8
I hate servers that only support EFI boot with a passion. Yes, legacy / BIOS boot is old, but it was so simple. I've been spending hours trying to get EFI boot working on servers with swraid-ed disks and *nothing* works without ugly hackish patches all over!
Anyone successfully got an EFI partition (/boot/efi) on an MDRaid device? D':4
What does Linux and web development have in common. New distros and framework popping up everyday.
What is wrong with people, creating distros and web framework for dumb reason. When they can contribute to to existing distro/framework to make it better.8
Hey peps! One quick question on the OS side: whats your opinion on Manjaro vs Antergos? Both seem quite wholesome on both working and casual aspects and i can't find many things a little less unbiased about them :/4
To make a semi-meaningful (or really any kind of) contribution to the Linux kernel. Like just to leave something useful behind in general.3
In a continuation of my previous rant:
Alright KVM is running.
First devrant post from my Windows inside my Linux with dedicated pass-through graphics card. So far, looks like it's working.
Installing Horizon Zero Dawn to gage gaming performance. But it looks promising. With a stylish button on desk that switches between Windows and Linux.2
When everyone on YouTube has interfaces that definitely do NOT appear to you :/
I was supposed to create my pixel, give it a cute lil name and then test events ( Facebook ).
But NOOO ofc I would get a ton of issues in the process, everyone is able to connect their pixels safely but it took Facebook more than what, 4 days now ? To kindly inform me that:
Server external ID not matching to pixel external ID
You're sending the external_ID parameter for your PageView event from your server, but you're not sending the external_ID parameter for this event from your pixel. If you send external_ID for an event from your server, you must send it from your pixel as well in order for that event to be valid.
How am I even supposed to know how to fix that ! I just started learning programming, the only thing I know how to do is use Linux and write a ciao mundo C program. Now my store was supposed to be launched a week ago and I am still looking for solutions to this. Ugh.7
I've just finished installing Ubuntu Unity 22.04 on a new SSD installed on my wife's computer; it's so relaxing the fresh air of a new Linux distribution installed.3
That moment when windows tools can't delete a file and only WSL can.
At this point it's just entertaining for for to see in how many ways windows can break.2
Hey everyone, I'm looking to setup my own vpn and I stumbled upon "algo vpn" which we can self host. Can anyone confirm on this ?

I have one Windows and one Apple M1 computer. Our project runs old docker containers and can't upgrade easily. I decided to run the x86 versions of containers on there and use them from my network. Corporate Windows has port blocking so I decided to install linux to a usb drive. I loaded a live install distro and installed it to a second USB drive.
The internal nvme laptop drive somehow had its partition table wiped along the way. I can see files on there in a partition restore tool but alas it isn't becoming bootable again from uefi after doing partition table restore. 😭7
Each time I see THAT, there is 50% chance that server will not reboot :(
Why, just why we don't have roll backs and all nice things we have in windows ?8
I got a very low power Netbook lately for basically no money.
I thought about using it for some server monitoring / server access via ssh console.
Which Linux distros would you recommend for such a use case. Tried Something like core-os and Debian(lxde) yet but wasn't very satisfied with both options. Both could not display the battery capacity and Debian didn't detect the Intel WiFi.
The Netbook has 512mb of ram which should be fine for a lightweight gui and more than enough for a ssh connection 😅
Thanks a lot for the recommendations :)12
- yo bro do you have some time ?
- quick cause I'm taking a dump
- I think I have been hacked, got black screen kernel panick, linux freeze seldomly I have to reboot, no internet connexion
- save your stuff and reinstall linux
- I don't have enough stockage to backup
- Then buy one and save, probably either OS is fcked up or you have some hdd problems
Time that it will take: ~30min to reinstall whole shit
Peace duration: ~2years
Later on the same day
- I can't log into windows
- Did you change the password ?
- Yes but it does not work anymore
* looking at shit
* logs successfully. Reason: interface changed after automatic update.
* wait some more so fucking windows fucking starts
* Desktop is ugly as fck.
* Some stupid settings messed up (like high contrast set, black theme or so)
aunt (the same)
- I can't log into my (other) laptop either
* wait more more more
Guess what: automatic updaaaates. Freezes 100%cpu
* Being a very experienced user: wait before reboot because this suckass os will probably fail to boot otherwise
* Blackscreen with a percentage: Installing updates...
* Blackscreen with a percentage: Installing updates continuing...
* finally boot (feels like a miracle windows succeeds lol)
* still slow
aunt now sleeps
* look at running process and install programs
* sees shits like camera recognition (vendor installed), candycrush
* occasionnaly get adds
time lost: 2h
peace duration: ~3month
FFS I am a dev, not a fucking trash lover
It is already pain to fix someone os, but windows is the cream of cream
It brings no ease of use for novice user
It is so insanely slow
It has stupid settings set up by default!!!!!!!! Who FFS wants candycrush and ads
The maj are so fcking hazardous. It is 2022 pretty much the same as 15y back then. Updates take fucking eternity. And needs reboot. and are not even finished!!!
I swear I am gonna stretch my ass and install linux and any fckin other toolsuite needed so they can use Micro$$ word, which is the only fucking usecase they need windows for in the first case anyway
I SO wish this OS would die
I mean, even more than safari8
That might seem a bit random, but I started off this year with a nightmare (a literal dream) where I've fallen victim to remote code execution, because I cloned someone's git repo.
Is such a thing even possible? The closest thing I've found was this blog
(and the info on it was already worrying enough), but that shouldn't have affected my dream computer.
Some details I more or less remember:
* The execution happened right after git clone
* The uri to the repo was a custom domain (no github, gitlab or anything)
* no submodules
I use so many open-source projects that I don't even know which one I use most.
Probably Linux or Git. I use Linux on all my own personal PCs. I use Git at home and at work. But there's also Firefox...11
"Really... it is 2006 right? Email's been around for ages, so why are email clients still so crappy?"
XPXPXPXP, oh brother. shit just dont change do it?
What Linux distro is best for development?
I'm thinking of making a persistent USB with a Linux distro on it for programming so I don't have all my video games and stuff at my fingertips at all times to reduce distraction.28
Does anyone know if it's possible to install a VM (Linux or Windows) on a Linux Server without GUI and then connect to the aforementioned VM via Remote Desktop? If yes, has anyone done it before?4
I have never used a Mac before, so I never really understood how it works, until I tried fixing a problem someone was facing and thought, Mac is just Linux but stylized. I wanna get it and see why it is so hyped14
What's the best Linux distribution for servers? I don't want an UI and that fancy stuff. I just want a 1337 hax0r console.10
I use Debian btw.
Srsly I used it on every woking and private maschine and every server where I had the choice, even in most docker containers for over ten years. And I can hardly complain. Problems occur very seldom and are always fixable. Everything I need works just fine (execept for PS, but no distro could aolve this). I have literally zero incentive to try other distros because Debian just does it for me.
Sometimes I wonder though if something is wrong with me? Is it Stockholm snydrome? Am i missing something inportant? Because everyone seems to struggle constantly with the question of distribution.
Whatever. At least I struggle with the question of which Desktop to use because everyone available sucks.4
I feel like I need a slap in the face here: My team can’t agree on a platform for our apps (Windows/.Net or Linux/Java Middleware/Java). So we have apps all over the place, and our team is fractured. Support is a mess, and I’m caught in the middle because I’m the only one willing to try to keep all these systems upgraded (our infrastructure team refuses to work with anyone except me on our team because I just shut up about my platform beliefs and get work done). I’ve pitched trying .Net core on Linux although I know very little about that. We have no technical challenges that require one platform over another - these are simple business apps. I think our architects should force one platform. Am I nuts? Maybe it’s time to look for another career if this is the new norm.24
I'm facing a strange problem, I have a 400GB microsd, it is formatted as exFAT
I tried formatting it again to either ntfs or ext4, on either Linux or macOS, but every tool says format complete then when scans again it still shows the files that storage had + that it's exFAT
I tried gparted, disk utilities (macOS), Disks (ubuntu), mkfs all show same result that it successfully formatted the card but after refresh still shows old filesystem + the contents of the memory already there no file was removed
Can anyone help?26
Client's IT department is fine about giving me a laptop for exclusive access to their VPN, security reasons, etc. Ok, fine I get it.
But they do not want to give me a Linux machine - only Windows!
How am I supposed to get shit done.11
After upgrading to kubelet 1.24 kubernetes won't even start. Complains about an unrecognized flag "--network-plugin=cni". And stackoverflow has nothing to offer to work around it.
God I hate backwards-incompatible software updates. Esp w/o vendor's scripts automatically porting old version configs to match the new configuration convention.
Now I have to learn all about something big, called dockershim.
Fuck! I so don't want to spend my whole day on this...
It's not very linuxish to push breaking updates w/o any bpo mechanism, esp for a software that's a part of the linux foundation :|15
started looking for another way to use discord since their linux app is electron and garbage. (taking up a couple gigs just to sit there. windows apparently are all 32bit builds and take up a couple hundred megs)
luakit was not highlighting text? lil slow. lil weird
surf (suckless), well suks. copy doesnt even work from what i can tell, and other ppl had that issue. besides that just kind of a pain. not a fan of suckless rebuild manually flow anyway
had to dick with userscripts since a browser wouldn't have notifs or systray.
drag and drop doesn't appear to work with webkit. (i know safari users have had issues bc discord says the tech doesnt support discord)
ended up with vimb, and i gotta say, it's good. faster, i got vim follow, and it only takes up 100mb or so.
After couiple of hours (Yes, apprently it's insane how hard is to add a new NIC to a linux machine and make it start on boot), I finally got my connexion working !
Server has original MB 1Gbits card. Internet connexion is 1.1 Gbps. So 1Gb card only picked at 940 Mbits download
I bought a 2.5 Gb card (new nic)
Pluged it in : Nothing
Couple of ifconfig -a etc, bring device UP : Yeah working !
Reboot : Nothing
/etc/interfaces : nothing
And why it's not eth0 and eth1 etc as before but some thing cryptic like enp3s0.
Well, at least now everything working (Apperently there is a new "network plan" config file in yaml... what a waste, DO FUCKING JSON YOU RETARDS)
Ping is awsome tho ! Same cable on windows Machine, I get 5 ms.4
Microsoft Windows can burn.
I have this feature where I configure a remote API via some endpoints and the API pushes data back to some webhooks in my API.
Yesterday I set everything up for the final test; fired up my own API with some test data, added some configuration and started trace logging to ensure that everything works as expected when the remote site tries to send me data.
I was ready to collect ! Enter this morning: Windows have forcibly rebooted to install an update and shut everything down.
inb4 install Linux; No, I can not. Windows is company policy and I am required to use shit that is only designed for Windows.6
Since my XPS battery is dying I'm flirting with an idea of a new laptop. Requirements:
- 13" display
- 4k display (I'm so used to high-res that x1080 looks like accessibility mode)
- 16 (worst case), 32 (OK), 64 (possible?) GB RAM
- long battery life
- i7 or Ryzen equivalent (I need lots of ram, lots of computing power)
- plays nice with Linux
- GPU preferably integrated (don't need a separate GPU)
- ultrabook (small, compact, light) (I don't like to exercise while carrying it. God forbid I'd grow a muscle... )
- purrrrtty :)
So far the best candidate I've found is... XPS13 again :D The setup I'm after costs ~1.6k€ which is not that bad, really.
Is there anything else in the market that'd meet the criteria? Anything worth looking into? Better deals?19
Which Linux distribution is suitable for programming and development purposes?
I am going to use Linux for the first time. I usually worked on windows and macOS.13
I was browsing google news when i saw a new IDE similar to Visual Code, it is built based on rust, it starts with pcle or pcie i tried hard to find it but i lost it even my damn phone browser didn't save it in history, anyone knows what I'm talking about please 🥺 ?8
A jr dev was having an issue registering code with our data pipeline (prefect self hosted).
Turns out he's running vscode to launch a anaconda shell (didn't even know that was a thing) to launch jupyter notebook and running commands in the notebook (didn't know that was possible) all from Windows.
No it doesn't work. His environment configuration isn't right. I told him to just run Linux and get rid of all that nonsense.
Nothing is on git yet and were three weeks in! His code is full of hard coded absolute paths of files on his hard drive... He even had an example app to go buy, with a project layout to copy.
There's no helping some people9
Is Linux mainly used for programmers . I made an error and bought a Linux based PC. When all I've used was Windows before then.... I never realized how much I miss Windows19
I was wondering what setup (especially laptop/tower) you would use for coding at work it you could chose freely (I know some of you can).
I like the Lenovo thinkpads and like to have at least 16gb of ram (32 are better) and some powerful cpu like an i7. Usb type c, power delivery and useful Linux driver support are must-have.
How about you?15
so im trying to build this old retro-box for some game testing...and ohhhhhh myyyy godddd
first of all - winxp is dead lol. browsers wont install, GPU driver doesnt work, some exes say they arent valid win32 bc idfk, old. found k-melon, some crusty offshoot of firefox i think and very um...gnu, lets call it gnu.
just getting a usb install was the worst part. ofc...no linux way to make a simple usb bootable from iso. dd is a no go, unetbootin psh ya right never works, others are more or less a cluster. finally say fuk it, boot a vm and do windows rufus...well that vm has no ad block. that site alone was atrocious. small middle section where the site is with ads NSEW. and then click the download..yep, another - wait still another ad. ffs you already have 50 on the page youre gona throw more at me for clicking download? all this to get something that aint gona work. 7 aint gona work, so ig 10 maybe? idfk what for...if the shit works well at all.
but between that and fone woes ive had. idk how everyone deals with the shit the world of tech has become. jesus-fuking-christ. want to cfg a mouse/keyboard? nope sry use windows tool. fu ill roll my own tyvm qmk. you want to show someone a 10sec video? nope watch a minute ad, that's broken, and repeats forever. you want to see a simple web page? NOBUYMYTHINGANDSTUFFINYOURFACE - fuk off
and earlier today someone mentioned that plugins are changing and some anti-ad ppl say it's gg...dude...fuk this proprietary world. it's just all garbage. im only really still in society's game for the tech, and you know what i just really dont care that much anymore5
Facebook (aka meta ) is having their Linux Ecosystem. What do you think?
Is there any chance that Linux open source distributions such as Ubuntu would hide malicious code or backdoor or similar thing in their code and simply hide it in their release publication?15
We can say I'm so called senior in my company. Not exactly a senior because I have like 2.5 years of commercial experience, but everyone in the company has much less.
As I'm kind of technology enthusiast, I have a lot of personal experience with Linux, Docker, I'm basically quite familiar with a lot of stuff both in theoretical and practical manner. That's why often I'm helping my less experienced friends to solve some issue, help with docker, help with deployment, and I'm really happy to do so.
Recently I was helping to deploy something ASAP on environment no one is familiar with and it took me couple of hours to do so, as it required changes in a lot of places. Even our team lead was happy about it.
I've just got email from my boss, that I should focus less on helping others. Not even a "thanks, good job". After I literally helped this company to get their shit together4
Linux package management is dumb for one simple reason: it is too complicated for its own good. There are too many different approaches and even within one approach there might be multiple repositories.
so here i am, recreating the same code.
i'm using an acceptable solution for running this on a linux system.
they updated it so blkid won't display information without root now, a dozen times. ok. fine. i get it blkid can also SET the id.
nice command, gets me the info I want.
implementing, recognizing the implementation.
why the fuck do I have to rewrite a relevant utility that bypasses google's shittiness ? why ? WHY ?2
I'm planning to switch from ownCloud to Nextcloud in the next weeks. Does anyone have experience with that or maybe some advice? Aside from creating Backups.7

I sadly don't remember who set this up and posted it on devRant (give me a distro) but it seems to be down :/
Would be glad to host it again if needed, I think it is a great idea. ^^5
My fellow Linux Gamers, how do you DO IT?? I mean, my laptop is not some beast (it was 5 years ago, but now is old and tired) but it was able to run (not the smoothies way possible) games like Dishonored 2 on windows, but now that i am full-time Ubuntu user and i am stuck to minimal games i ask myself:
HOW DO YOU RUN SOMETHING POST-MARIO ON THIS SHIT?? i even tried wine with play on linux and even Gothic 1 runs like a slug..
Please, help a fellow gamer and linux enthusiast to understand where to look for a more performant experience 😔12
Has anyone experience with putting Linux on a asus e200ha Netbook? Want to get rid of Windows but I'm concerned about driver availability and battery life.1
For those using Windows 11. How's it been as a development environment/base OS? Any temptations to switch to Linux? I've been seeing a good number of web developers on Twitter make the jump so I thought I'd ask.20
I think I'll clearn and update my Server this weekend (since it's still on Debian 8).Wish me luck or dig my grave.
P.s.: Tips/suggestions/experiences are also very appreciated3
TailsOS is based on keeping you anonymous by using Tor, if that's the case how Tails can protect you if you can install Tor on any other distribution of your choice? I still don't get it9
I am very confused nowadays, exist a great number technologies but i don't decide what technology or language of programming i want specialize me.
I love it the hacking but i have very little experience in programming and have a basic knowdledge in networks and database.
I love it the assembly language but only can code a pair of syntax in this language and know very little about components, architecture and the rest.
I love it the data mining, big data, IA, machine learning but i don't control the statistic.
Of every topics i have a basic knowdlege.
Actually i try to discover my practicality. I am learning Perl and regular expressions.6

I'm getting a new laptop and planning on installing Xubuntu on it. Anybody have any other distros that they like that I might consider installing instead?15
So I can't believe I'm asking this again. But where the fuck is the source code for BOOTX64.efi for linux ?
And why when i run strings BOOTX64.efi does the word microsoft show up ?33
My programming class kinda sucked. Here's why.
1. They taught C++. To students who had never seen a line of code in their lives. The language with 90+ keywords.
2. The teacher. We had to use switch statements to do something. It took around 300 loc. I used an array and shortened it to 5. He took some points away for not doing it correct. IT LITERALLY WORKS THE SAME AND IS SHORTER. This was not the first time I had shortened something/made it more readable and been docked points on the assignment.
3. Commenting. He told us to comment as much as possible, which is not correct. Comment what needs commenting. Not everything.
4. The compiler. We worked on windows with an online compiler. He decided teaching us to set up a compiler was too hard. We used onlinegdb, which isn't inherently bad. However, onlinegdb is based on Linux. He compiled our programs with a windows compiler.
Maybe these are just problems because I've programmed before that, but I still think they are red flags. What do you think?3
A cheap smartwatch that I can reprogram with Linux and stick it on my motorcycle to only show google maps
I'm sure many of you have old laptops and PCs lying around at home. Don't throw them away, and don't just leave them out there. Put them to use.
Install a Linux distro on them and they'll be as good as new https://linuxstans.com/best-linux-d...7
Ok so, another post got me thinking…
Every browser I’ve tried sucks one way or another. Chrome, Firefox, Vivaldi etc…
Safari on my work Mac is so far the least annoying one, although it seems to have an issue with Google’s services…
On my personal computer (Linux) I use mainly Vivaldi, tho I have Firefox installed as well since apparently Vivaldi doesn’t quite support everything on the interwebs…
So, fellow ranters, what are your favoured browsers (all platforms go!) and most importantly, why?11
So, I did Ubuntu 18.04 updates today. Apparently doing so broke the sound on my computer. 18.04 is not new. It has been working fine for over 3 years and none of the other updates broke the sound. How do we get to 2022 with Linux being over 20 years old and it fucking breaks the sound on an update? I don't even see shit like this in Windows 10 any more.11
the bitching just never stops
teams on linux? joke
webex, k, better. wtf is this type character "pop up and lose focus" char "lose focus"2
Recently changed my laptop over to Linux. Now I have to write twice as many bat/shell files for every project.10
I spent a few days being mean to my LMDE4 and newly installed LMDE5 and Debian in past months. Every time I needed to run something small&simple under linux, it was acting up. Traces, botched boots, OS freezing up...
The issue was in VirtualBox the whole time and recent update finally fixed it.
Sorry for blaming you Tux
Sometimes I really don't know how else to put it lmao, I'm on the level of caffeine crash and overtiredness that I literally typed in "clear" to the Windows file save dialog. I swear Python has made me suffer for longer than Java has, and that says something. Help.3
So I love what Apple is doing with the new Macs, great hardware, streamlined optimization, blistering performance.....great stuff.
But here's the thing. I think I'm gonna get a ThinkPad and just install fedora on it. It's far cheaper and outside of only going up to 16GB of ram it meets all my needs.
But between you and I a big factor in why I'm finding it hard to go Mac is the system settings. Like why is it like that? Why when I click something a separate window opens.....odd.6
Has anyone spidered the web and repos and found info about the Linux distros for comparison ? Like packages and vendor support and kernel ? I feel like fedora is just debian with newer software that uses rpm
On another note I'm wishing these idiots had just let me work straight through as a developer or tax auditor etc because I'm not working in Dickson just so they can steal my car again after working hard and honestly to improve my fucking situation
As I said as I remember things and that was a pretty big one
All the time people spent fucking around and the world went in a circle and I said this last time
Fucking people should have to hand me over a check for the number of times I bought that damn car !2
Had to face the music and make the jump from Ubuntu 22.04 to Fedora 36. Am I have to say it’s been night and day so far. Everything is snappier. Yeah dnf is very slow in comparison to apt but there’s changes you can make to speed things up and the nifty terminal interface is a great change and helps to make up for the speed issues.
Came with Python 3.10 installed, Gnome and gtk4 apps are nice, fluid and up to date and the random slowdowns, freezing and restarts of Ubuntu running the version of Gnome are nonexistent.
For the life of me I can’t see why Ubuntu would drop the ball like this. I have a Dell XPS 13 developer edition and this is the best it’s ever ran. Even wifi connectivity is better despite of the crap WiFi card that ships with this machine.
I want to love this version and while it is the most graphical appealing and functional version of Ubuntu I’ve ever used. The memory management issues make it damn near unusable.11
is there a fucking utility that will flat out list all installed libraries on a linux system and if cmake and/or pkg-config can find them ???17
seriously, does any linux distro have a stable fuking kernel?
ive used them all across different distros, 3.10, 4.w/e, 5.0-15...every fuking time i use some distro's kernel it breaks shit. dkms, initramfs, oom issues, nics being fubar, just any and every god damn thing.
use my own config and manual updates? no problems. ever.11
So I just started another little project, and recognize it. It was one I was super close to finishing as well, just like the other.
All I'm waiting for on the one project is the ability to get a good c# dev env setup on linux.
but now I wonder should I abandon this one to ?
seriously, point ?
listening to these fucking people make their children misbehave and wail is like being in hell.
this is EXACTLY the way I would envision hell.
projects I can't fix
and fucking pedophiles everywhere.
that and screaming.
So can you guys name one Linux distro that doesn't come preloaded with bloat, i mean Linux is better than windows since you have control, but i don't want to have fire fox out of the box i don't want fkin libre office can't we have a distro like arch but we don't have to go through the lengthy installation process. Maybe throw in the drivers and a bare bone DE of choice and that's it12
been using Manjaro KDE (arch) - it feels way better than windows. Linux has certainly come a long way.3
Anybody have their Steam Deck yet? If so, what do you think of it? The page says mine will come in the July-September tranche. I reserved about three hours into the initial period, last July.7
I never use pwd.
Either I figure out where I am via my prompt, or I use LS and sleuth out the folder via its contents, or I just "cd" and restart from home but I NEVER have used pwd.8
Really minor gripe, but how comes that on a new install of Regolith ping is not installed but mtr is?
I think it's not limited to Regolith... But that's weird, isn't it?
Guys I have set Deja Dup Backup folders to save as in the picture, if my Home is already backed up Do I still need to have /Documents folder as i can ls it within /home ?
I have been using Linux for a while and I get update notification about 3 times per week. I find it annoying. As soon as I plan to get some work done, I get a large notification popup saying "Hey, it's time to install le updates". I find it distracting; especially so because I use my laptop about 3 times per week; so basically EVERY TIME when I'm about to use it, it says "HEY you know what? Time for UPDATES".
Updates on Windows are annoying too; but at least they do not appear as often. I find this unacceptable and I do not know how anyone could think that distracting people from work so often is "ok". This is bad.11
Today, I began learning about the wonders and horrors of HA in production environments.
My head feels like when I first joined the company as a total noob who never worked an IT job in his life. Soooooooo much new information and concepts and potential issues to learn to avoid.
But all super interesting!
everyone has been on pipewire's nuts lately and i dont really get it
it keeps fuking up for me every update. dropping sources, swapping sources. every time i start certain things it will NOT save the audio from pavucontrol
wtf is the hype for then?8
HELP!!!, My ubuntu system exhaust all of it's ram, my system lags too much, I was currently running firefox, vim, postman, react server and node server.26
Anyone else realizing that googling any python tutorial defaults to getting wsl guides.
It's like everyone has agreed, you know what python on windows sucks, let's just use linux1
Is there a structured way to learn Linux? I am a developer who is trying to learn cloud computing.3
Despite already having a few years of professional experience dealing with Linux servers, I still, to this day, confuse, which environment file gets sourced and when...
There's /etc/profile, /etc/bashrc, ~/.bash_profile, ~/.profile, ~/.bashrc
I think it's... Bashrc for interactive shells, profile for login shells.
But then I have examples like "ssh user@server 'echo $var'" that... Don't source any of the files!
You can enable user environment files for SSH that get sourced whenever a user logs on through SSH (~/.ssh/environment / environment specified for a key in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys)
Is there some sort of master environment file that gets sourced *every* time, no matter what kind of shell starts?1
I try to delete a partition from my sundisk Pendrive using GParted but when I do this I got the error that is shown in the image.
And If I try to use "fdisk" which run `sudo fdisk /dev/sda` following command it gives me ```welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.34).
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.
fdisk: cannot open /dev/sda: Read-only file system```
following error does that mean my pendrive permanently broke can anybody help me!9
So though I SORT of understand this when you're talking a server for example, one 'feature' of linux I really don't like is when a bogus entry in fstab causes the whole machine to boot into emergency mode without so much as an error message !
i mean, besides the desktop, browser and obligatory shit?
uh, lets go with wine/dxvk (which, you know, is totally NOT an emulator)
