That moment after you do a fresh install of an OS and think "Wow everything is so fast and so much space"3
-
Your OS is like a penis... Its fine to be proud of it, its fine to tell people about it. But its not fine to force it on other people...11
-
HP Virtual Agent, you're about as useless as the fucking hardware that I'm troubleshooting. What part of fucking "Arch Linux" do you not understand?! Not everyone runs your fucking assumed OS choices - WanBLowS 7, 8 or 10. What's more, the hardware that I'm troubleshooting doesn't even support those bloody operating systems.
Long live HP and its random freezes due to poor thermal management. And long live Intel's fucking wireless drivers, that for no good reason disconnect after half an hour and require me to restart NetworkManager to (hopefully) get shit connected again. And long live those useless fucking "virtual assistants"!!!16 -

Me and friend1: talking about Linux friend2: "what is this Linux"
Me:"it's an OS"
Friend2:"so it's something like excel and powerpoint."
Unfortunately there wasn't a cliff to jump off in that moment.13 -
So CIA has backdoor access to almost all OS out there.
I guess switching to Temple OS is the only option if wants to be totally safe. The creator is literally crazy and dedicated about his OS.18 -
Finally removed elementary OS. (Random crashed and everything) and installed Ubuntu 18.04. It looks great.24
-
Friend: Can u get me Linux OS on this pendrive?
Me: sure, Ubuntu would do?
Friend: Don't u have Linux?
Me: *facepalm*13 -
Got 2 Computers and 2 Laptops
1 is using Elementary OS
1 is using Arch
1 is using Linux Mint
1 is using OSX
And 0 Windows
Feels good man!15 -
Today I moved from Windows to Ubuntu 16.04. THIS IS THE BEST FUCKING OS IN THE WORLD. I feel I can do anything here.
Linux is freedom.31 -
It was a boring day and I was about to ssh into my server and this guy comes up to me, stares at my screen and when I turned back
He asks me "Have you tried deep in ur ass?"
*People around started looking at us*
I was like wtf! Got out from my chair and looked in his face "wtf did you just ask me?"
"Deepin, Deeepin OS! "
"Say that again u dumb fukkk and I will fucking slam ur face into the wall!"
Fucking confuses every time!!7 -
DevRant is cool, mostly because we are united. We don't agree on OS, language, theme, or tabs. But we are united by code. Next time you want to troll someone, think about why you became a developer. To Code.7

So just today I stumbled upon Deepin OS (Linux Distro based on Debian) and it looks amazing! Arguably even better than Elementary OS :D Has anyone else used this distro/what do you think?29

Just finished installing Deepin OS on my old laptop as an attempt to get familiar with linux (coming from win10). It looks gorgeous, I got at least four orgasms from the installation process alone. And it comes with lots of cool apps preinstalled (Chrome, Spotify, Steam, etc). So far I'm very happy with it.30

OK... OK... OK...
Today we reached another level of security for one of our MiniMac in the office...
sudo chmod -R 400 /
Oh... he was supposed to write ./ but he forgot the dot...
Now, even the OS can’t work...5 -
Few years back I managed to write a conky script after watching Breaking Bad.
The OS is elementary OS.6 -
After 3 hours of struggle, I was able to setup multiple versions of PHP and configured easy switching on Apache on a fresh install of elementary OS.11

*gets countless amounts of shit with Windows because of my "nonstandard use"*
WanBLowS fanbois: "Cheap hardware!! Hardware error!! Unstable drivers!!! Can't be anything else, this OS is rock solid."
I really wish that I had your ignorance. I know when I see a shitty OS in front of me. And mind you, it actually ran Linux a while back.. just that I couldn't use my Nvidia GPU in it and had to compile a kernel with all of that crap excluded to make it work decently.. fuck Nvidia. And you know what, it actually did run fucking rock solid!!! But over time I lost the config and X.org doesn't like my dualhead setup all that much, especially the ultrawide display.
So, how about we address this issue for what it is already. THE OS FUCKING SUCKS!!!21 -
My friend just introduced me to devrant today, and then we decided we're going to write an OS together...10

Just switched from Kali to Parrot OS. A very nice pentesting OS. Neat UI. ✌️
Great performance on a basic laptop.7 -
Linux Mint ladies and gentlemen
I will dedicate a separate rant for choosing an OS for my new laptop, as I was heavily disappointed in some OS-es17 -
Woke up this morning to the message below:
"I have [ insert name ]'s old laptop. Can you please have a look at it , i mean to see if it can be fixed. It seems fine."
Long story short.. Windows 10 out, Elementary OS in! While I enjoy this pizza at the same time. Funny thing is, the time taken to install Elementary OS was shorter than the time Windows was taking to update this laptop..oh well, another old PC joins the Linux laptops in the house.9 -

So am I the only one here who is still saving up to buy the latest 15 inches macbook pro despite of all those cons?
How I wish dell xps can run Mac OS X. Meh 😩
Hhmm or should I buy dell xps and just install Ubuntu?19 -
This year I am gonna install different os and distribution in my laptop.
1st distro is PoP Os
Previous distro - Antergos18 -
Successfully duel booted windows and elementary os. 😌😌
Installed elementary tweaks, osx darker theme numix circle icons.
Installed vs code. 😋😋
Life was never so easy.
I love elementary os. 😍😍😍
Elementary forever.🤘7 -
Happened last semester, due to lack of admin rights to us students on our computer in OS Lab, a friend wasn't able to start a program. So the OS teacher came and instructed the lab helper to install more RAM on the computer, so that programs cam run without admin access.
We lost all hope of ever understanding OS in class.7 -
There once was a game.
In that game, there was an OS.
But that OS knew not his name.
The OS was mad, wild, and free.
"Oh, would you find a name for me?"
Seriously, I need a name for the Linux OS in my game. :3
I'll be used for hacking.
Please be original.
Bonus point if you google it to make sure it doesn't exist already.
:359 -
Ok then!
Time to install Arch Linux on my MacBook Pro...
Coz why not... I wanna try it and see how it runs on this machine 😌😌
Plus... Customization ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I think I can get back to Mac OS right? Just need the USB of Mac? 🤔28 -
I DID IT!!! just fucking installed lineage os <3 never imagined that it could be so complicated... they really don't want you to flash your phone man. I guess the main problem was that my phone is old x)
So I'm trying to get a clean and free environment, any advice about applications? My biggest problem is with telegram, I'll try wire, bit there is anything else that can replace telegram and on android and Linux? I mean I need to keep conversations sync, and I won't use a Chrome application TT so no signal.41 -
I want a os, that has:
The software support of windows, the speed of macOS and the stability and security of Linux...why dont we have this?9 -
!rant
What is the reason a lot of you guys(not all of you) hate windows so much. I never had any single slow down or virus infection for ages, Windows Update always updates at the scheduled time etc.
I used Linux before, and I personally think that the experience is just about the same once you find alternatives to the windows software. But it also has flaws, dependency hell for instance.
Buuuut, I believe each OS has its ups and downs. So while one OS have trouble with something, the other might also have a problem. Some OS's are better than others and that no OS is perfect, and I wish I could see less criticism on OS's on devRant, cause it's getting kind of repetitive and stupid. Thank you.7 -
OS as weeddealers:
Windows has standard weed. Nothing special, but reliable.
Linux got a great selection, but you always gotta haggle with him for hours until something works out.
Mac sells oregano.8 -
well, for now, my biggest dev ambition is to become a compiler designer/programmer... or OS designer/programmer.
In short, systems programmer (compilers or OS).
😅😅😁😁3 -
Me: hmmmm it's a pain in the ass building my program and having to rebuild it everytime I want to swap to my Chromebook (going from x86 to ARM64), I really wish they could develop an OS that is essentially a VM so you would compile once and have the OS' VM later do the heavy lifting
My brain: hey Alex, that sounds like a great idea, you deserve a coffee for that!
Me: yes I do... Wait... Coffee... Cup of jo... Java.... WAIT! This sounds like what Java was intended to be!!!!!
My brain: oh dear god... Time to fucking bury this thought to never be discussed again!!!!!
What's the lesson to learn here? If it looks like Java, sounds like Java and acts like Java, beat it over the head and bury it 6 feet down :-37 -
What happened with proprietary OS?
Now if you don't have an SSD ,the whole UI is so slow.
It only happens with MacOs and Windows.
One more reason to use Linux7 -
When you install a new OS on your machine and when you're finally done you make a stupid mistake...
and BOOM!
easiest way to fix the outcome is to redo the OS again... -
Just found a really short JavaScript code inside a html document that will on Firefox for Windows/Linux no longer let you use your OS. Also android gets completely laggy and needs a force restart.
(I'm new to JavaScript)20 -
Fucking apple & Mac OS..
So.. Before high sierra, you could create a USB using boot camp.
All good & dandy without too much fuss.
No longer. instead it automatically mounts & copies the os onto a apfs partition(?) and without as much as a mention or warning it just reboots immediately when it's done.
Srsly, not even a silly "hey, we need to reboot"..
Now, I could probably have gone to diskutil, formatted, set the boot flags and copied the files..
But rly, Nvm that.
Besides I might actually find some use in a windows install.
So needing to install windows to create an USB is acceptable.
But Bloody hell, it's been a while since I've been in this triggered from something..
T_T no warnings, just force reboot into windows. -
There is a Linux based os called extern OS.....man....shit looks so pretty and its scriptable through js for deektop apps and shit. Should be pretty interesting11

long rant;
How did I got into CS?
When I first got my laptop, I put on a password and forgot it. Nobody knew those things at that time around me (most of them, still don't) so I had to pay ₹350 (~$5) for formatting (OS reinstallation).
After a week, I again forgot the password and had no guts to ask more money from my family, because of the fear of getting scolded.
So, I took out the manuals that had shipped with the laptop, read them all. Found nothing.
But, on a very small page, a single line was written, "Insert the disc. Press F12 after pressing the power button".
I intuitively tried it and it worked (I had the OS DVD and no internet).
And I spent the next year experimenting with the windows OS (Vista).
Then tried all the other OSs.
Those were some times..2008..I guess.
Learnt OS without the internet. Nowadays people can't do it even with it.
What's your story?5 -

Medium long story about POP!_OS
TL;DR : A true K.I.S.S. OS. Very well designed UI. In general suitable for everyone. Any distro-hoppers MUST try out. If your current OS is already heavily customized to your needs, DON'T bother with POP. (Read till the end if you are on toilet, nothing to lose)
Backstory : I am never a fanboy of anything although I am loyal to the tools I use daily. So OS is also something I picked and use to meet my needs except when I was a student. My first linux experience was about a decade ago with ubuntu. Have tried almost all kinds of light-weight and minimal distros after that (lubuntu, arch, mint, puppylinux, fedora, centos and others I forgot) during my student years.
I like all things minimal. ("Keep It Simple Stupid" is my email signature.) When I started working, Windows became the sole OS I use since it met my needs better than others. Except that one time when I tried Elementary. Although I found it a good OS, it didn't get installed as a dual-boot. I don't find Elementary minimal. It is one of well designed OSs but I still think it can be improved. (Plus I had this weird feeling that it is similar to Mac OS)
At the start of this year, Widows alone was not enough for my needs. Decided to look for a minimal linux distro. My old i7 ASUS has 8GB RAM and roughly 250GB free storage. So I am not that worried about hardware requirements. My main struggle is downloading stuffs. (Few of you guys must know by now the speed of my internet LOL.) Well, even if I had a good speed, I will still look for minimal distro as first priority. So I went with minimal ubuntu image and xubuntu environment. Although I do not like the UI design, it is acceptable. Through out the years, I have configured it to suit my needs and currently pretty happy with it.
Thoughts on POP!_OS : To me, it is literally like meeting a young girl who is perfect for my life. She has the perfect body, beautiful face, amazing appearance and good manners. And she is young, of course there is a lack of experience issue. But it can be taught and she has a very high chance to become a wonderful lady if she continues like this. Only crap is I already have someone and in a committed relationship. So I could not go any further than introduction. I do save her contact and will keep in touch with her online. You know? Things change. Things always change somehow.2 -
If you could randomly decide that a specific software platform (like an entire OS) will not exist tomorrow, what would it be? And why iOS?question windows os macosx raspberry platform destruction linux platforms android ios software platform13
-
It doesn't matter what platform, OS, framework, language or technology you use.
You should be able to write good code. Which depends on your skills, knowledge and abilities
PS - Windows sucks. And will always sucks19 -
I was having fun, when I aliased my co worker cd="exit", he spent his whole day on fixing it and decided to install os again. damn poor :/8

Now I can finally say that Linux is the best os I've ever used.
It's is just awesome. Everything can be controlled here easily. No fuss in installing and stuff. I wish I had started using this OS right from the beginning. Thank you to all the members of Linux community.
Linux community raise your hands up.7 -
Running Windows on my desktops and Linux on a couple of headless machines, creates a bonus side effect:
Far too often, some fanboy claims that his OS is the only true OS, and let's us know that he's permanently upset about life's greatest injustice, which is the fact that some people out there have chosen a different OS. So, running Windows AND Linux, creates the pleasure of always being one of those who run a different OS than the fanboys.
So, if you're an OS fanboy, it doesn't matter whether you run macOS, Linux or Windows - I will always have at least one machine running the *wrong* OS.
<evil laughter> https://youtube.com/watch/... -
All these switching to linux posts and it feels universe is telling me to make the switch.
Yesterday, again, i had to go through failing windows 10 update. Wasted over 2 hr just booting up my pc because of fucking update that is incompatible with my PC.
I want to switch right now.
Which linux distro do you recommend? I let devRant choose my OS. ( p.s Its a laptop )33 -
Has anyone heard of the new OS that Google develops. Fuchsia. It is now not based on Linux but Magenta (Developed by Google) and will probably not use Java but Dart7

Fuck me and windows I guess....3 -
I love elementary os. Light weight and elegant. I do all my coding and developing in EOS. Current version Loki. Anyone else here using eOS?8

Add this to the list of bad design choices of Mac OS and Apple laptops:
When you connect thr charging cable, the laptop makes a sound from the speakers, even if you have Headphones plugged in... Why?...
Infact it makes a sound even if you have it muted. This is an m2 pro, they had plenty of time to figure this shit out
:^) Think different I guess17 -

I need a new OS.
I have one year of Kubuntu, one year of Fedora KDE and there years of Arch Linux (Openbox, KDE, i3wm).
Now I'm undecided between debian and Arch Linux as a stable System.
What do you guys recommend me?
I hate picking huge software from AUR and need to compile it, but i hate having always a, yes stable package, but under versioned...
(and, exist a Debian minimal without everything Archstyle?)13 -
Watching an android wear on iOS video and they are complaining that android wear is limited on iOS and they love the look and usability of android wear compared to watch OS...
Of course it's bloody limited, you can't even use Apple devices with android so be happy you even get basic support :-P
(Yes I am a Google fan boy so android for lyf)3 -
I just set up my 8 year old nephews new (very old) laptop with elementary OS. Took the chance to explain a bit about operating systems and how computers and programs are made and how they work. He is very interested. I'm excited to have a new apprentice!1

I hate chome OS.
I'm sad to say that because of my school I've used it more than Ubuntu. Chrome really takes the fun out of Linux. I want to access the terminal, but in chome the terminal is an extension's WEBPAGE which got BLOCKED.1 -
Waiting 15+ minutes while Windows "indexes" a folder just so I can see the contents reminds me of why I dislike Windows as an OS so much.
This is a senseless operation that is of no benefit to the user.5 -
OS surgical operations allowances...
Linux allows most of the manipulations, windows allows some while Mac didn't.... Feeling awesome with Linux.... Try yourself..!8 -
As some of you know I work as an occupational therapist and one of my clients wants to ungoogle his phone by installing lineage os on it.
He was asking me today if there are some good tutorials for doing that. He has an Xiaomi A1 phone and he would like to have a german tutorial.
If you know any pls share link.11 -
Struggling with Linux driver bullshit today. Trying to update the graphics driver completely hosed the networking, second monitor (HDMI), and I assume a bunch of other stuff. I tried using the Additional Drivers utility and it nearly made my system non bootable. So on my second computer I had to look up how to unfuck my machine using the command line. Yet another classy set of bullshit from Gnome. The driver for all this was trying to fix some java programs that show wonky depending upon where the window is on my second display. After unfucking the machine I found that resetting all the display settings for both displays magically fixed the java program fuckery. How the fuck? Literally setting things like display resolution, default display, moving virtual displays around. This bullshit somehow fixed display problems with java apps.
So I decided there is a perfect OS out there somewhere, but it isn't iOS, it isn't Windows and it isn't Linux. I decided to make the Perfect OS, or P-OS for short. Gonna use P-OS as a fake OS in my games I make. lol15 -
UBUNTU 16.04 VS ELEMENTARY OS
I'm Currently running Ubuntu 16.04 for all things dev related, is it worth the time to switch to elementary OS?
Or is there any other distro you would suggest me to switch to?17 -
I'm pretty sure I've said this before but I'm attempting to transition parts of my Patchwork OS to a new one that supports GNU GRUB / Multiboot.
I think I am finally going insane.5 -
Is dual booting between linux (specifically pop os) and windows 10 possible these days or do we have still the grub ignores windows and/or windows ignores linux problems?
Please spare me with comments about windows, I'm sorry that you use a Home edition which has limited settings or you're too bigoted to accept other concepts than linux'.
I'd like to have 3 partitions: around 40 gigs for pop os, 120 gigs ntfs Windows and the rest as ntfs for data. Any articles or experience made in the last months is appreciated.11 -
Laying in bed at 1 AM unable to sleep so of course my brain is going wild and trying to convince me that learning Assembly and C to make my own bootloader and OS would be a good idea... Could be fun, think it's worth the shots and giggles?5
-
Lesson learnt.
Never argue about any type of OS (Desktop or Mobile) when sitting between Devs. Be it about features or development.1 -
google has crammed so many things in Gmail that,
I think they will port an entire OS in the future.
G-OS7 -
Every time someone here makes one small complaint about their system, there's always that one guy to criticize your choice of OS. REGARDLESS of what OS it is8
-
I'm TIRED of developers arguing about which OS is better! Just because you ride a ferrari or a lambo doesn't mean you'll get through traffic quicker. GNU/Linux is a great OS, it lacks certain qualities, but so does Microsoft Windows, and OS X. None of these operating systems are perfect. I recently switched back to Windows from GNU/Linux after 6 years of being blinded by the stupid wars of the operating systems, and am now writing my own OS. Just. Be. Chill. With. Your. OS. And. Dont. Complain.2
-
I don't get why certain people always complain about the OS they have to use at work... I get, that as a person who really uses aspects of the OS like a sysadmin or something like that, has valid points... but no... as a projectmanager or productmanager, whos tools are all browserbased... "in Windows I know where all the things are..." is not a valid excuse to hate on the OS...
What do you want to do? Change system settings everyday? Use PowerShell to create your Jira tickets?8 -
I love gaming. I love Linux. Why can't these i have both of these in one platform.
Using Windows day to day is killng me please the gods of os development, seinors, senpai find a solution for this...8 -
Hey Linux users!
I'm coming from a pure Windows background, and is going to make the change to Linux:Debian this weekend, and is looking for recommendations on material for learning commands and other possible features the OS might contain.
Working mostly with web dev and some Datawarehouse/BI applications.
Hoping for a smooth transition!5 -
Operating system for esp8266 based mcus, think Android (OS, APIs, App store) for mcus. Currently writing the docs for the OS APIs. If sounds interesting, check out https://prismos.dev1

Am i the only person complaining about Android being a fucking irritating load of bloatware, which you cant escape from. I just cant understand how we are being Okay with such a huge bloated OS which doesnt do any justice to the hardware. Views ?8

My father has an old powermac (G5 I believe) and wants a modern lightweight OS since apple dropped support a while ago. I proposed Linux and my father seemed intrigued to try it out. Tomorrow I get the machine and get to set it up.
I was thinking of Elementary OS, since he is an Apple fanboy. What do you think about that decision?
Never used or installed it before, but how hard can it be?
*obligatorily mentioning that I use Arch Linux*6 -
Linux certainly is the best. It works even on my slow 4gb laptop.
One of my family member's laptop running vista went dead today. Checked system, seems like only workaround is using repair disks with iso. Used this chance to finally convince her on moving to ubuntu.
Well, considering there wasn't even any comparison needed for Vista x Linux, she might just need to suit herself using libreoffice instead of winoffice. Just afraid she(not familiar with computers) might be bothered about the sudo here and there-thats something that takes time to get used to for non-programmers.
Well, changing someone's OS really is a great accomplishment. Kudos for myself.3 -
If you install your OS to one drive; can you remove the drive, then boot your OS in another computer off of that drive?17

Dell is such awful machine to use with ubuntu even it was officially ubuntu installed machine it has so much issues and my work is suffering because of this machine which costs me 70k PKR. Having 8gb ram 500hdd, core i3 processor 4th gen.
I'm suffering from wifi getting disconnected time to time I couldn't find help on ubuntu forms nor on official dell site
I guess both sucks pretty bad
will atleast never buy dell machine again nor with stupid ubuntu os just3 -
Looking forward to trying out ChromeOS for a while.
I like the idea of a minimal OS. Frankly while Windows, macOS and Linux are all incredible bits of engineering, they all suck ass and are maddeningly frustrating.
Usually I'm on a computer to complete a task and just want the OS to quietly do its job and leave me out of its myriad personal crises. I don't want to see or hear from that fucker.
If experience tells me anything it's that I'll be swearing at the Chromebook within the week.
But, the fact I'm trying shows I haven't lost hope.5 -
Let's make an OS. It's easy, you just need to know how to program in autorun.inf
P.S. This was an avid Mac user -

Who fucking thought its a good idea to disable the bluelightfilter in the battery saver mode on lineage os?! 😶2

Smart me.. Updated OS X from 10.10 to the ‘new’ 10.12 just before leaving on my vacation. I’m currently at the boarding gate, wanting to develop some bits and pieces.
Apparently, the update fucked me once more.. My XAMPP server, the Git commands, my permissions, .. Nothing works.. Now I have to google all this stuff to get everything working again, but the Wifi is sooo damn sloooow.
Doubted so many times to install ubuntu on my macbook, but I have no idea how Ubuntu handles the battery life, the led keyboard, the function buttons, … The whole OS X works for me, but once in a while, it fuckes me so hard, I would've liked it if it took me out for dinner once in a while.. :D3 -
Is Google trying to win a "who can create the shittiest file picker" award?
The file picker of Android OS can not even remember the last selected sorting options, and its default sorting is alphabetical. Does anyone really use alphabetical sorting? Sorting by the last modified time or by size is far more useful than alphabetical sorting can ever hope being.
The only use for alphabetical sorting is sorting files with incorrect time stamp attribute but a correct time stamp or number in the file name.
The file picker of Android OS also features pull-to-refresh. As already said, pull-to-refresh is not a helpful shortcut but a useless anti-feature. ( https://devrant.com/rants/9831669/... ) Why would anyone need to refresh in a file picker? How likely is a file to not exist before opening the file picker and then appear while browsing for the file? All pull-to-refresh does here is draining the phone battery by reloading the thumbnails.
The file search feature of the Google file picker can only search the entire storage. A search can not be limited to the currently viewed directory. Even the file picker of Windows Vista from 2007 could search only the viewed directory.
Obviously, it lacks any kind of range selection. No A-to-B selection that is like shift-click selection on desktop, and not even the inferior drag-to-select that Samsung has implemented, which would still be better than annoying individual selection.
Microsoft could build a better file picker at a time some of us were in primary school than Google can build today. Come on, Google, just scrap your garbage software and go copycat Microsoft. Useful plagiarized software is better than useless self-made garbage.
At least the Google file picker does one thing right: It remembers the last directory the user picked a file from and opens it next time.8 -

Well, today I installed Qubes OS on my PC. Idk how the ride with It will be but I was curious about it.
I hope I can manage all the "problems" when they come.
PD: Still have windows on the PC (games, guilty) and the laptop from my working place (also windows, It came like that when they give it to me) but I want to try to use Qubes OS as daily OS.
Wish me luck!7 -
Real devs try to have knowledge in all three major lines of OS so they don't have much trouble using a different OS at times, even if they absolutely don't like it.
You can still like your favourite OS and use it the most, of course. :)9 -
After lots of fuckery with UEFI, I finally managed to install (and boot into!) Qubes OS - in legacy (MBR), but whatever. I am so excited!4

I HATE when I update a machine and I hose it. BUT! it's FUN as hell fixing it. reinstalling my OS today! yay! #nerdlife3

Day 1 with Chromium OS: Inclusion of packages and stuff
Day 2 with Chromium OS: Setting up CI, and realize Azure is fucking gay because their own agents disconnects after 4 hours.
Just why.
Day 3 with Chromium OS: resolve their shitty problem, now their own agents have no disk space. I blame Google.
Day 4 with Chromium OS: Fix CI in at 10 commits, give up and cry.
Day 5 with Chromium OS: Realized Travis might stood a chance, build time limit reached, now I'm shook.
Day 6 with Chromium OS: Buried myself with endless tabs of Gentoo documentation. Lost count on when's the last time I came out of my room.
Today with Chromium OS: I blame Google for making my life suffer more than the last time I had depression.
Conclusion: Chromium OS is Gentoo with extra steps and I hate it5 -
This is really shitty from ubuntu the reason I switched to linux was I had crappy windows error slow performance and that I gets hanged time to time.
Guess what I have same problem.on linux :/ fuck this ubuntu gnome.
Can anybody tell if there's any fucking os which doesn't get hang?
because Ubuntu is pissing me off

What the fucking shit, Arch. In what universe/reality is a user expected to easily/quickly address GPG/PGP bullshit when they install Arch. It's already hilarious enough as it is for the user to input every single command in order to install the thing. -- That's actually what's great about Arch; you get return and assurance from each command. -- I understood the fact that you need the latest ISO release in order to even install Arch, but now, if you decide to pacstrap linux-hardened, or god forbid, a package that is who knows what, less maintained?... fuck knows what will happen.
The fantastic part, is that you can't do shit when you're in an arch ISO install. All of the simple and possible solutions that involve GPG DBs/keyrings/etc require you to have the all of the shit installed already; which is fucking impossible if the package manager is bitching about keys not being imported. The most fantastic part, is that there is probably some complete bullshit, ultra-exclusive command or simple solution that will fix this crap. - And if you even dare ask the Arch forums, you'll be branded as a "newbie" and sentenced to read the fucking wiki. - ??? -- That's not a fucking good thing. -- The majority of people who are installing Arch right now, are people who are installing it for the first time, and chances are, most of those people have no fucking clue what is happening; they're learning what is happening. Furthermore, they're probably the kind of people who aren't inclined (or they don't know how) to scour Google or the Arch forums for answers to vague, lazy-ass error messages. The whole point of this thing is show and confront the user about what they're installing and what they want on their computer. Holy shit. This is all the more reason to ensure that total, stupid, ambiguous bullshit errors do not occur. -- "error: key "dogshit master <dogshitmaster@dogshit.org>?" could not could not be imported". -- That's it. That's the error in it's entirety. For a fucking OS install. What the fuck.16 -
Anyone have any good suggestions for Java IDEs/Editors? I'm using Eclipse right now, and since I'm a student I can get IntelliJ Ultimate free, except I can't figure out why the run/debug buttons are greyed out...
Also would be cool to suggest good dark themes for whichever program you guys mention. And which OS would be good to use? I'm thinking Ubuntu right now
Plz don't hate for these dumb questions, I'm only a first year xD8 -

I am looking to switch from Ubuntu (once again).
I already used Fedora and Arch in the past, while Arch was my fav, its just too much of a hassle to setup. But I keep finding tiny things that annoy me on Ubuntu.
So anyhow, what do you use/reccomend and why?13 -
Most the devs are yelling Linux is best and blah. But since I installed eOS on my new ideapad my productivity is zero.
I'm just solving problems with the OS or other software. It seems some of the drivers are missing, because sometimes this fucking piece of shit just don't boots or just hangs. Installing node and npm was definitely one of the worst experiences because I messed up sudo privileges... I had to change my workflow because node-sass wasn't able to compile because of this.
And still I kind of feel more comfortable with eOS. 😥17 -
Fooling Windows is easy and fun :p
My friend got logged out of windows and recovery option was saying to wipe the syatem. There was important data in the windows ( photos, videos , project ) so I thought of a simple solution.
Booted Linux in USB and live booted it on the system. Linux can read the files from window OS. Simply copied the data to hard drive.
Windows be like Am I a joke to you9 -
Should I replace my Ubuntu w/ Remix OS?
Or should I triple boot? It's legacy boot only. Ugh
Or should I buy a cheap PC?
Nah. I'll just fap.7 -

Hey guys
I'm trying to do something different from the usual and need your help.
I want to install linuxCNC in a pen drive (as in a live CD, but with the file system in the PEN which is usable)
I want to plug it into my mother's laptop, use it with my machines, then just unplug and it will run the native windows for my father.
How can I do this'?
I only find Live CDs, and I'm afraid of ruining my OS when If I try to install (afraid of installing on the SSD instead of the PEN).10 -
Is there a Linux distribution without a lot of problems with Nvidia drivers? I'm currently using elementary os, because I like the look of it, but I'm getting a lot of graphical glitches and black screens all the time and I was wondering if changing to another distro would help. Is elementary is known for graphical glitches, or is it just the Nvidia drivers? I've also turned my display manager into a mess while trying to customise my login screen, so it might be a good time to change to another distribution. Any recommendations? And one more thing, just out of curiosity, can you install multiple distributions and use the same home directory if home is mounted on a separate partition?15

Friday, late due trains, on schedule for presenting last month's work.
Mac OS have decided to update some unknown time and doesn't give an estimate..
Woo hoo...
Why did I ever agree to try a Mac for workstation, just because it's the default platform at work..1 -
So you got new sdd and you want to try someone new slick distro. So you google slick distro and you find a blog.
You download 4 to 5 iso. Now you want to make a bootable pendrive, but you don't have pendrive. So you use your 1TB HDD. And you accidentally format the whole HDD. Now you install one by one all iso. You don't like single os you revert back to the original OS. And you have wasted your whole day.
List of distro I installed:
1) Deepin OS
2) Solus OS
3) Nitrux
4) Ubuntu 17.10
5) Pop OS (Orignal OS)10 -
I don't hate ubuntu but I really feel that deepin is what ubuntu should have been.
When I was new to the linux world (maybe I am a new still), whenever I used to ask someone about linux Os, they used to tell me to install ubuntu.
But the ui was not that appealing. Deepin is what I should have installed and I would have ditched windows long ago. I know there are many distros, maybe better than deepin but deepin looks and feels good and is easy to use. The deepin store is awesome.
#peace ✌1 -

I am thinking about setting up a dual boot (Windows 10 & Mac Os Sierra) on my windows pc for video editing.
I have a Gtx 1070 and an i7 7820HK... I am going to install both OSs on a PciE Ssd.
Not going to overclock it ofc.
Has anyone done that with similar hardware?10 -
Thank you for FlexGate, Apple.
And by extension, Louis Rossmann.
For ranting about it.
My GFs MacBook Air suffers from it and the support program doesn't want to cover it.
That has made her open to try new options.
I'm pretty sure she's now hooked on Elementary OS. 🎉
The real test comes when she brings it to school tho. :)5 -
I use Windows because I like to use my OS to make stuff, as opposed to being used by my OS to make the OS.8

I'm so god damn sick of unattended upgrades and OS updates. I've switched from Ubuntu to NixOS for a few months now already and it's the greatest thing I've ever done, because it's declarative, it's rational and it's fast. Unfortunately today I had to switch back to Ubuntu for the day, because I don't have my main laptop with me and now I remember why I hate this OS. This piece of shit garbage keeps running unattended upgrades updates when I'm doing busy work. Like I'm writing my Jenkinsfiles and sitting in work meetings and then suddenly a fucking unattended upgrade eats 100% CPU and turns my friendly laptop into a jet turbine :(((6

I hate all of the OS/langs circlejerks. I think anyone participating in them (in a serious manner) needs to fucking grow up and learn the concept of tools. TL;DR for any OS/lang discussion: Use the right tools for the right job.3

After some time, planning to install Linux again for personal use and some dev work at home. My current pc is getting too slow sometimes and it irritates me a lot.
My current pc 2gb RAM, Dual core Intel, 32 bit.
Main criteria, os should be fast, I can compromise on GUI, should be stable, should support my old configuration. I like to work on Java/Scala, python, js and sql. Eclipse will be there since I use it at work.
Short listed Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS,
mint (huge confusion on gui),
Opensuse, elementary OS and arch. I had Ubuntu, mint for some time as secondary OS. Arch will be totally new world for me. I have tried few OS in USB boot but couldn't fix one.
Right now I am confused about which one to choose, since everything looks fine but I want the best choice based on my criteria.9 -
Post a rant and apologize cause he's using windows. What the heck is wrong with people here ? This trend is so annoying. And those same guys mock apple fan boys the truth is you're no different. "Yours is shit coz mine iz z best".4

I see a lot of comments on here about how people hate one OS versus another. Everyone has a gripe with <pick your OS>. Do devs need an OS made for them? Is Linux that OS or are we still waiting for the One True Dev OS?
I got to thinking something that is based around the Docker concept. Where every app runs in its own world. Would this be terrible?
I have no experience with docker so I don't know the technical issues. I know Docker exists on top of OSes, but could it be useful at a lower level?13 -
Any OS recommendations for my old HP Pavilion g6?
Something a bit less known, along the line of elementaryOS (but stable) or Deepin (but not Chinese spyware).22 -

So, im getting tired of the clutter on my home computer. Although I wouldn't change my main os (os x), I'd like to have a linux VM ready on my machine.
Which distro would you guys recommend?
To give you a quick description of how advanced I am with operating systems, I have used windows for the majority of my life (I'm 19), have recently switched to osx (when the new mbp came out) and have spent about 3-4 months using only ubuntu in between my windows/osx switch. Besides that, I've only done some minor projects with a raspberry pi.4 -
Im curious guys, what's everyone main core OS/Distro at the moment and why?
For me it's chrome OS, taken a little hiatus from programming as it's been dragging my mental state down a bit so I've been focusing on writing my book and what programming I am doing is just me learning ground up java script development. So all I really need are my google docs services and a good code editor.5 -
Yeah Elementary OS, you look cool and all of that but come on, you could've at least IMPROVED THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR WEBSITE SO I'D BE ABLE TO START DOWNLOADING YOU, anyway, keep up the good work.2

I want to buy a new laptop and would like to double boot it with Linux and Windows 10. So should I buy a laptop with bundled Windows 10 OS or the other way round. Also will it be a problem if I buy a laptop with DOS OS ( DOS OS Supported)3

I once had to install a Mac OS VM for a school project. I tried customizing one simple thing in the boot options and I was meet with a green screen with an apple support phone number, no debug options. FML. We ended up begging the TA to do Android app instead, and we did :)

I love my Mac but damn, most MacOS releases are so damn useless, I won't do a major OS overhaul (updating from Big Sur to Montrey) just to get Share Play and the opportunity to watch movies together with my few Mac using friends, I don't need those fucking marketing driven bells and whistles, just give me a stable UNIX base an efficient and good looking UI and regular security patches and I'm good.
I would be happy to keep using Mavericks but without yearly MacOS release how Apple would be able to convince normies to replace their 10 years old MacBooks?4 -

Ok so I'm about to start working on an OS but I am going to run through a few tutorials to get the base systems down then I'll incorporate a interpreter for BASIC and my custom scripting language.
Just curious if anyone can point me in the direction of a few well written tutorials that will explain the systems being used. (I want to use Assembly and C only btw, but am open to others)
I only have 1 decent tutorial but it's older and complete (https://github.com/cfenollosa/...)3 -
Virtualbox 6 sucks!
So i'm on a mac and i need some linux goodness on the quick. But the screen resolution stays at 800x600px! On my high dpi screen it's so tiny i need a magnifying glass to do anything on the guest os. And i can't change the resolution nor scale it up for the life of it. Never had that before. Really frustrating!!! 😤5 -
rant: Been an Apple user for 5+ years and I haven't been too excited about the MacBook Pro lineup's direction. Not a huge fan of a gimmick like the Touch Bar, the fact that a $3,000 laptop only has a 500gb SSD, or the questionable commitment Apple has to OS X.
!rant: That said- anyone else here taking a serious look at Linux? Are you debating it? Made the switch? I really want to make the jump when I get a new laptop.4 -

Tablet recommendations? I know this isn't really the place to ask but I trust you devs.
I'm just about to start back college and I'd like to have a light carry around for days I don't need my laptop. I love my 17" Dell, it's a beast and that's why I bought it but damn it's overkill for taking notes and running little things through a bash terminal. A tablet and keyboard seems like a nice idea.
Ideally, I wanna run Linux. But I'm not sure if there's a commercial tablet that facilitates OS changes easily out of the box.
No iPad. Not an apple fan, and it's just not what I'm after.
The MS surface seems pretty good, but I haven't looked too deeply into replacing the OS.
I just want a nice Linux tablet. I dunno.
Thanks!5 -
!rant, I have a couple of sky hd+ boxes knocking around, we've cancelled our sky subscription as we're big on netflix and amazon prime instead and sky don't want the boxes back. I was going to take the hard drives out (1 TB each) as i could use some more external storage for my work and pics, but before I do so is there anything I can do with the boxes instead?

It's been over a year since I installed elementary OS on my laptop and I still haven't regretted switching from Ubuntu. There were a few issues initially while setting things up but similar issues even used to happen when I was using Ubuntu.
The desktop shell of elementary OS is perfect for my use cases, its easier to switch between virtual desktops and the app bar at the bottom makes it easier for me to transition between my Macbook and Linux based laptop with ease.
The only major issue I found was no proper multi-monitor support.
The closest thing I found to the simplicity of this shell/distro was Zorin OS, although at this point I am just too lazy to try it out.
P.S. Feel free to mention your favourite Linux distro in comments 😁9 -
Q: I'm using make as a simple task runner. `make build` instead of a longer build command etc. It sucks that I can't simply pass some params like `make build dev`, instead I have to pass them as variables: `make build tag=dev`.
Can you recommend a standard, cross-platform (Linux, OS X) tool for this?9 -

Hey, fellow devranters!
I'd like to know what is your laptop-os choose. I am looking for new laptop now and quite tempted by Mac but a lot of people say it is overpriced. Another option for me is putting new ssd to my old laptop and upgrading its ram. I am a little bit confused :/12 -
I really don't like the approach that the elementary OS developers took to their system. A closed system like that is antithetical to the whole concept of building on an established base... Which is what they're bloody well doing in the first place!4
-
I thought I'd actually stick with a Ubuntu for once. But, Elementary OS looks so cool... Apparently it is also quite fast and lightweight. I might actually put on the work to transfer from Ubuntu. Ugh.. I'll at least try and wait till I get my new computer and try it there.....3

After ten reinstallation, finally ready my first Virtual Machine fully operative with FreeBSD.
An OS full of surprise for a Arch-fag like me.
It's just like Arch, but without complicated simple things. Even if the raw system don't have anything on, in ten minutes is a fully operative system with even a configurated Desktop Enviroment.
The malus: driver. Not every machine can be the host for FreeBSD, for example AMD GPU can't send audio channel throw the hdmi port.
Personally i love the BSD License, so i think this OS will be my permanent one after Windows 101 -

I'm about to set up a new pc (not for me, in our bureau, it'll do nothing special at all) elementary os or Ubuntu 17.10?
I'd do an update to Ubuntu 18.04 when its published, but I don't wanna use the "old" version with unity as of now...
Or elementary is because it's easy to use?

I'm willing to try, everyone seems to be using it, I assume it shouldn't be that bad.9 -
Been using a *nix since about 2004, but becoming very weary of the OS wars. Man it's all the same shit: if you got to dig through the mud of undocumented Exchange API whose support will then be dropped or if you have to support eight different Samba VFS versions with all their gratuitous name changes.
It's all a fucking mess! But someone's got to roll up one's sleeves and get that shit to work.
And then there will always be the next guy cursing your name, because you got it to work and now he has to add some feature to this abomination. -
Since I am working with a pretty large codebase at work and also some ugly parts I do not fear to look into a fat ass open-source repo and get into it (fix something, ..). Never let the fear of it be your excuse.
But if the code looks like golumn, rewrite that shit yourself and do better. -

Probably this was asked before many times but I want your updated opinion.
1) What is the best Linux distro you used? Why?
2) Do you still use it? If not, why?
My answer:
1) Debian. Because I find it very comfortable and it run in Raspberry Pi and other small computers. It has the software that I usually use and it's very light.
2) Yes but not as my main OS because the lastest version of software that I use weren't updated yet (and probably they won't update them on a short time). I had to move to W10 as my main OS.5 -

As a TV OS developer, I'm interested in enhancing the user experience by providing more granular control over applications. Specifically, I'd like to be able to:
Monitor the current state of an application, such as whether it's open, paused, or playing.
Interact with the application's UI elements, like buttons, menus, and sliders.
Control the application's media playback, including starting, pausing, stopping, and seeking.
Are there any existing APIs or frameworks within the TV OS ecosystem that would enable me to achieve these goals? If so, could you please provide more details on their capabilities and limitations?5
