My friend: OMG OMG OMG My laptop is dead!
Me: What do you mean it's dead? It doesn't even turn on?
My friend: Nooo, it does nothing?
Me: Are you sure it's plugged in?
My friend: Yesss
Me: You sure?
My friend: Yess, it's actually plugged into a multiple socket thingy...
Me: And that thing is plugged in to the wall..?
My friend: Well duh!
Me: And did you turn the switch on?
My friend: Of course I....oh, wait!! Never mind!!!!!

Today at work I got a strange email
'about your msi laptop'
(Some background information, a few months ago I went on vacation and left my work laptop at home. Long story short some one broke in and stole my msi laptop)
So this email had my interest. I opened it and the content was something like:
Hi! My name is x, I clean/repair laptops partime and I noticed your personal information on this laptop, normally people whipe their data from their laptop before selling so this is just a double check, if the laptop was stolen please call me on xxx
If I hear nothing I'll assume its alright and will whipe your data
So of course I immediately called him, after a conversation I informed the police who is now working on the case7 -
My old laptop had an ear bud warmer right here. This new one is defective, those ear buds are still cold.6
-
Just took apart my laptop to dust it out from the inside. Had it back together, put the battery in. "Alright, time to make sure I didn't break something"
Beep....beep beep beep....beep beep beep....beep
"FUCK I FUCKING BROKE SOMETHING WHAT DID I BREAK?"
Google Lenovo post codes (Thinkpad laptop). DIMM issue.
"Oh fuck I forgot to put the RAM back in.."
Perfect now7 -
I think I’m a bit unusual in that my favorite place to code is on the couch, just using my laptop. During the work day I use two monitors, but I find it more comfortable to just use a lap desk and laptop when I get home/on weekends. I’m not sure if it’s from laziness or whatever, but it seems to work.7
-
Am I the only one who prefers laptop with numpad?
I feel like keyboards without a numpad are incomplete.12 -
When your internet download speed is faster than your system copy speed. Damn! I need a new laptop !!12
-
girl: Why is your laptop heavier than mine?
me: I have more files than yours
girl: oh! it's true, you and movies eh.
me: laughing inside... hehehe1 -
Yesterday my friend told me that he bought a second hand laptop of dy. I was first shocked by the name but later i got it.8
-
I had to edit it or else it would look boring af.
Just a cheap laptop
Btw: I made the photo and edit one week before knowing devRants wk119 will be devDeks xD12 -
Dad: you should buy a laptop now
Me: But i just upgraded my pc
Dad: all your friends have their own laptop, you should buy too
Me: but i find pc comfortable
Dad: what if you need to work at college? You could carry your laptop to college
Me: dad! Every college have pcs for students to work
Dad: whenever i want to use the pc, i find you there. I never get to use it!
Me: New laptop sounds good to me4 -
God damn it. Today i took my laptop to school and you cant guess how many people though i’m a hacker. It’s quite annoying. But just because you use linux doesnt mean you are a hacker! You uneducated pieces of dumbass!!!!10

The worst part of getting a new laptop is having to say goodbye to all the stickers you invested on your old one44
-
Since everyone is posting their system, I'll do it now, too:
- Type: Laptop
- Age: about 5 years
- Weight: 2-3 kg (too much)
- Modifications: Paper below problematic keys; Samsung Evo 850 250GB SSD
- Usecase: School-Laptop with every Office-Suite I could find.
- Pros: Wrecks my PC with the boottime (Gnome > KDE); Looks really sick; Really lightweight Arch installed; Quiet when not under load
- Cons: Really heavy; Battery old and unreliable; Bluetooth stops working after closing lid13 -
Finally got time to share my new laptop. I love its rgb backlight keyboard. I will buy a NVMe SSD and second monitor asap.6
-
I was on the beach with my work laptop in my backpack in sleep mode. I lifted the backpack and saw water dripping out. The stupid plastic water bottle had failed. Let's hope that my master thesis is still alive. Pray for the HP.9
-
Why would someone do this to his/her laptop????
There is a point after which this "stickers on a laptop" thing starts looking like shit, and in this case the point is long gone. Also at this point most of the stickers start to lose meaning.13 -
I miss laptop keyboards like this...
Look at delete and esc buttons!
😍
P.S.: No commercials here..you can't find this anymore! Even that company stopped from produce laptop like this..!16 -
Ability to complaining about "Gradle is too slow in my laptop!" to my dad to get a better one.
Saying thanks to Google.3 -
Just got a new work laptop last week. An upgrade from a crappy consumer grade piece of shit to a proper business grade 8c/16t laptop feels good.
Also Fedora.15 -
So the new laptop stopped powering on. Nothing I did worked, so I used the warranty service. I probably should have taken the SSD out...18
-
My Razer laptop died due to a hard drive failure so i filed an RMA. They didn't have the replacement part in stock, so they're replacing the laptop all together. Mine is a 2019 model with a 2060, but the current equivalent model has a RTX 3070, so I'll get that instead. I'm not complaining 😏9
-
Not being able to raise volume of my laptop with only one hand because the fn and f11 keys are just one hand and 3mm apart really kills me !3
-
Fucking gimmicks.
You know what the worst experience in technology is? A virtual keyboard. FUCK typing on a smooth piece of glass.
What's the solution? Attachable real keyboard. That blocks the bottom of the screen. Making it a normal laptop. Fuck off.7 -
Summer is coming, and i suppose all of you will buy a new barbecue to cook some meat, but i have another economic alternative.
How to make a homemade bbq:
1) Take an old laptop
2) Turn it on
3) Install Android studio (also works with intellij)
4) Add a lot of gradle (or maven) depencies
5) Code something cool (or not)
6) Build and compile it
7) Now you can put your meat on your laptop
8) Enjoy your meal13 -
I hate buying new laptops. HATE IT. The manufacturers are always trying to do something that makes it more complicated to buy a laptop confidently.
Why not name all of the laptops with numbers? Make them really hard to differentiate. Then offer the same model number across multiple years so it is difficult to determine which year the laptop is from.
Oh. And let’s make sure every laptop has a major flaw in the form factor.
Let’a add a numpad that squishes the keyboard to the left in a weird way. Lets do something to the trackpad to make it awkward to use. Maybe the keyboard should have a weird configuration. Maybe we can put 4 spare characters of various colours on the symbol key caps. How about a battery only lasts a few hours. May we add specialized hardware so you are stuck with windows. Maybe we can make it super thick and heavy. Lets have a screen with terrible viewing angles. Since this laptop has no major flaws we should overprice it. No repairs or upgrades on this one because we filled the computer with glue. Lets double the amount of useless media keys.
It is like manufacturers are trying to design laptops like RPG game character classes. The fighter has no magic or stealth. The magician is weak and gets fatigued. The rogue is very stealthy but has poor defence and attack. The cleric can use magic but only to heal so it is useless in battle. The ranger is good at distance but has poor defence and no magic.
The only notebooks sold that are trying to make balanced character classes are MacBooks. Those cost a premium and aren’t reparable.17 -
Dear Laptop manufacturers,
Why the FUCK would you place the power button where the 'Delete' should be? Just so that you accidentally can turn off your pc while typing? Fuck you.
If anyone know a good laptop that is thin and light, 14" and has the power button outside of the keyboard area, please tell me.12 -
I have my laptop for almost two years now. I've never dropped it once, even though I carry it a lot. So I decided to buy a plastic case this Monday. Just in case.
It's Saturday and I dropped it 3 times already. Shit. --> Never buy a case for your laptop.
/**
* It did it's job though.
* No damage on the device,
* just on the case
*/8 -
I just dropped my office laptop !
😨😨😨😨
There is a crack on the corner of the body but the device is Ok !
I am worried they will charge me the whole cost of the laptop ( i.e. 3 months worth salary )19 -
My company that I work for now is making me work on my personal laptop for the past 4 months! Like wth! It’s work from home y’all, and you gotta work 24/7 but on your own laptops! A thing came up for a new project, and my laptop doesn’t have enough space for it, they were like, delete your stuff, make space! Wtf! It’s called a personal laptop for a reason!13
-
I'm proud to announce that my work laptop has been officially devRanted!!!
Ps: Boss going to kill me, but fuck him anyway!9 -
Scariest thing I've ever experienced...
Was compiling a mod and left my laptop alone to do it's thing while I went to the bathroom. A couple of minutes later I started to smell something burning.
Rushed back to my laptop and everything was ok.
Turns out with all the coding I forgot about my toasts...1 -
Just received my $1 UnixStickers pack in the mail. Can't wait to put these on my laptop. Kinda sad that the Arch stickers won't really have a place on my Ubuntu laptop, but I'm sure I could find a use for them somewhere else.6

*Randomly using laptop to serialize data

Oh god what have I done1 -
Recent experience (#2)
- a cousin wanted to reinstall Windows on his laptop
- gave it to a tech shop
- they couldn't, said hard disk faulty
- I took the laptop hoping that it's just a partition table issue
- I tried changing partition table from MBR to GPT, but failed
- removed his hard disk from his laptop and plugged into mine
- tried and failed
- so I thought I would give it a chance with Ubuntu
- tried and ... 👍
- reinstalled his hard disk in his laptop
- works like a charm
- want to see what complaints he comes up with
- he is not a tech guy
- let's see how he manages to use it for his daily tasks20 -
That moment when you make heads turn, coz you are using laptop with loads of devRant sticker on it in metro.....
Feeling l33t..... -
So I'm in the market for a laptop and my friends don't understand why I'm being so picky. They don't understand why a laptop that weighs more than 2.0kg is heavy or why a 1366 x 768 isn't good if they have one with the same resolution and it's perfect. This mind might sound really "deep" but I feel like our laptop ends being the same as a canvas is for a painter. We spend 8 hours a day looking and working in these machines trying to create solutions for stuff that the "other people" - non-techies - take for granted. If they can be bloody picky about the pen the use to take notes in their classes and it's just a pen, why can't I be with the tool that's responsible for what I do on a daily basis and love doing?12
-
So
I received the laptop I got for granny. 17 fucking inches.
I'm legit jealous.
I mean, it's probably less suited for my goals because we almost exclusively looked for largest screen size possible, but damn.
I could do with a 17 inch display.8 -
Me: I am ready to marry my soulmate.
Everyone: Who's the luck girl?

Here is where I pretend to do work. -
Was busy today doing some house work. Everything was normal till afternoon.
Me thinking of using laptop noticed that there was no laptop
My office laptop and another bag was stolen from my home .
It had most of the production details and source code. Running behind police for help now.
Informed my boss too about this incident.
Will update on what happens tomorrow in office.
Fuck that person who stole my office laptop and destroyed my Peace.8 -
Drilled holes and put some new bolts in my laptop to fix the hinge. Kind of looks odd but I like it😂11

I needed a new laptop to work/study and found a suitable one on Lenovo's website...
25th of july :
- "your order has been placed... blablabla.. it will take approximately from 1 to 2 weeks to prepare and 3-5 days shipping.."
- hum... Ok.. seems long to just put RAM and SSD inside my laptop but alright..
31st of july :
- "unfortunately your order has been delayed, the new shipping date is estimated for August, 14"
- Fuck ! Ill be patient then.. hopefully it'll be ready earlier than that..
10th of August :
- "unfortunately your order has been delayed, the new shipping date is estimated for september, 7"
- WHAT THE FU.. ?!? YOU DENSE MOTHERFUCKER, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PUT 8 FUCKING GIGS OF RAM AND AN SSD PLEASE TELL ME ?!? IS IT A JOKE OR WHAT ?! I FLY ABROAD THE 17TH OF SEPTEMBER YOU BETTER SHIP MY LAPTOP IN TIME !!
I'm really mad now and thinking of cancelling the order.. I might have no time to test the laptop before flying.. FUCK !!4 -
Today I was working on a laptop. I needed to uninstall a program because i had to install the newest version of it. That process usually takes 2 hours, but 3 hours passed and the uninstall was still at 35%. I went on the task manager to see if I could figure out what is running on the laptop, that's when I saw this.... This laptop has been on for 314 days. This cannot be a normal thing to do on a laptop specially when running Windows. Why do this?7
-
I had written a script to take a photo every time the laptop lid is open an year ago. It's like about 3000 images now and it's really pretty to do like a timelapse. Do it and you won't will never regret.2

Worst part about getting a new laptop: losing all my stickers
Best part of getting a new laptop: New Stickers!1 -
When you get a laptop that comes with freeDOS?

Yeah, it's a bit long. Sorry.18 -
When your work laptop decides it wants to take 45 minutes to update Monday morning...

My laptop just died for the third time.
Need to buy a new one. Not a mac.
Linux machine with 15" screen, sdd, usb c, with 8gb ram and a graphics processor.
Suggestions?29 -
When you buy new laptop battery and on the next day you spill beer all over the keyboard making laptop totally useless.9
-
Just bought my my first laptop!
I've had a PC desktop but this is the first laptop of my own! What do you guys recommend I should install from a programmer perspective? Any software you can't live without?24 -
Day 3 since I purchase a laptop and my productivity level has risen significantly. Love not being restricted to my desk.2
-
Got my new laptop today!
Traded my old laptop..
The devRant stickers were too difficult to remove, so I had to part with them. :(2 -
Black Friday is the time where you consider to buy a new laptop and finds that laptop companies don't know how to make one for programmers. Either they are shit or they are gamer laptop that have 2~4 GB of video memory you will never use and costs thousands of dollars.
Is it hard to make one with good CPU, RAM and a SSD without concluding that you are a hardcore gamer and you need an expensive video card along with it?8 -
Really wish we would see some OLED equipped laptops, we have massive 4K OLED TV's and Tony high resolution smartphone displays, why can't we just get a nice 1080p OLED panel, makes so much sense in a laptop IMO3
-
Anyone else hate their Macbook Pro 2018? RIGHT after the return policy the speakers start acting like it has fucking tourette's, plus my machine randomly SHUTS DOWN.
Apple Store "Genius": "Yup, we gotta send it in for repair, 10 business days."
10 business days without my work laptop, gee thanks asshole, at least be a little more empathetic about it.
My 2015 Macbook Pro gave me ZERO problems. The only reason why I upgraded was that compiling took forever (React Native).
If I didn't have to work with Xcode I would just sell this thing and buy a PC laptop. (The Surface book looks nice =))10 -
I'd like a power button on the outside of my laptop so I don't have to open it.
I think 90% of the time I turn my laptop on ... it is closed and "docked" with a bunch of cables running to it and ... probably another laptop on top of it.13 -
So this is my setup,
An over heating partially broken laptop with external Monitor.. 😭😭
Show yours 🤔8 -
Small update to this rant
https://devrant.com/rants/1789703/... :
A classmate of mine lend me his old laptop with an SSD and an HDD and I could install Ubuntu Budgie on it and use it while my laptop is under repairment. The thing is, this temporary laptop is pretty awesome and fast and the fact that I don't have to deal with all the NVidia proprietary drivers and other gaming laptop bs makes me pretty happy
Update to the story above: the HDD of the temporary laptop died (didn't have anything important on it, so no problem). But I must be going through some bad omen tech times, since, beside my laptop and this HDD dying, my cooking plate, inflatable mattress, some sockets and lightbulbs broke inside my apartment. Hail! -
Lying to your misses about the purchase price of a new laptop - protecting the relationship or just plain wrong?6
-
I made the switch and my laptop is thanking me. The laptop is SATA II so I opted for a cheap SSD. Insane difference on boot up, shutdown, and opening programs.1
-
Laptop has died. This is probably a significant blocker to development...
Oh well time to buy a new one I guess!1 -
This weekend I gorilla glued a laptop hinge back together. My kid kept slamming the laptop lid closed fast. The lid also got shoved into a desk where I think it was putting stress on the lid. It caused the lid to separate from the hinge plastic a bit. I put some gorilla glue in there and putting clamps on it. It glued up nicely. Then we had a talk about laptop treatment and care.2
-
Got a new laptop, but it was not properly working, so while waiting for it to get replaced, I have to use the old one again.
Feels like the CPU is a freaking potato!2 -
* sees a React sticker on a friend's laptop *

— Well, actually I've never even used it. Just had this sticker laying around and my laptop got a scratch so...2 -
My laptop now finally refuses to connect to the company wifi, and here i am browsing bitbucket on my phone
I didn't expect me to be productive today anyway, but that's another rant.11 -
Some years ago but it's funny.
The company give to me a new laptop with windows Home Edition,
After few months I have installed Pro Version.
1 month later the laptop didn't work anymore, nothing on display, no beeps, zero.
Tried to replace ram and check but nothing works.
The CTO asked the supplier and they asked about SO, and they said it's not turning ON because i have installed Windows Pro.
Than the CTO had a brilliant idea: try put the hard disk in another laptop and install Windows Home, and put back in the defective one. I refused to to that, it's stupid and he insisted, then I put the laptop in his desk and I said: if you want do this you can do, im not stupid enough to do this.
He got really mad, 1 week later i got a brand new one 😅5 -
What do you use to develop?
If laptop which one + specs?
If desktop specs + favorite accessories?
What type of development?
Editor?6 -
I fell on the floor with my laptop in the company provided laptop sleeve inside a laptop bag. Now it has a ugly bend at the end. Can anything be done about this?17
-
Almost died few minutes ago. My laptop was plugged to power, while I was using it, for last one hour. Then power cut and my laptop went off too. I was really afraid. Just 9 months ago I purchased a new battery for my laptop. When power came back, and I restarted my laptop, to check status, it was saying "Plugged in. Not charging" on windows. Now I was in serious shock. "Fuck battery died again. This time so soon". Also no red light which reflects charging but white, which reflects "laptop running on direct supply". It gave me some indication when it stopped showing red light during charging for last couple of days
I removed the battery and reinserted it. Replugged the charger. Now it's charging. And red light is back
This makes me even more serious. As similar to this, is what happened with me last time battery died.
Now let's see whether my laptop battery is going to see this night or not. Next few hours are crucial8 -
So,
Acer has a corrupt BIOS,
Lenovo is a bug fest,
HP supposedly also sucks.
So which brand of laptop does not suck?40 -
Gotta make a decision matrix like the one in the picture. It's for a recommendation report concerning whether or not to distribute laptops to the CSCE students at my university and what kind of laptop if so.
I need help determining the weights for my matrix, because my personal preferences may not reflect the majority. As a programmer, how would you weigh the following three (very broad) categories?
Power(CPU, GPU, memory, HDD, I/O, etc..)
Quality (Durability, material, aesthetics, etc..)
Comfort(Weight, size, shape, keyboard, screen-eye comfort, OS familiarity, etc..)
Please write an integer 1-10 in the following format:
Power/Quality/Comfort ex: 7/4/9
Thanks, everyone!

And finally I got the lovely stickers
Thanks devRant!
Any suggestions about where to stick them on the laptop ? Can you please share your laptop pic 😃😃☺2 -
I seriously think my Laptop is slower than me when it comes to switching between workspaces and applications.

MSI GV series gaming laptop

Do I see standard li-ion batteries? Can it be replaced by ourselves?
If yes, fantastic, wish more manufacturers support this, especially for workstation / development laptops.18 -
I think my laptop is living and hates me... I press shutdown (Yes the actual windows shutdown and not long-press power button) I close my Laptop, expecting it to shutdown, right? Nope... It goes to sleep mode and next time I open it up, it continues to shutdown... It's like it doesn't want to shutdown and is playing a joke on me.....13

Are you using your own laptop at work? Or your company provides you with a company laptop? I use my own at work because I don't like to develop using company windows desktop.13

I'm sick of companies putting 1.1GHz CPUs and 4GB of RAM in a laptop, Windows takes up all of the processing power and nothing is left for programs9

Guess who was studying on his laptop and also had a near deadline about an university project and now admire this fab burnt monitor flat.
(About a week ago i also reiceveid and sticked devrant's sticker to it)6 -
Some people need stickers for their laptop ... but what I actually need is a laptop for all my stickers ...2
-
I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. But I'm sad about leaving all of these stickers (yeah I know they're pretty random)
also, should I get a macbook or not? I really like the OS but I hate it's pricetag. But i heard Apple supports their products for more than 5 years and this laptop of mine is just 3 and a half years old and it's slowing down already even on 16gb memory. IntelliJ used to run smoothly on this.
Can u guys suggest a developer friendly laptop? im not really into gaming so I wouldn't need gaming one 👨💻8 -
Week started of great.... :/
I always leave my laptop at work, except this weekend. Guess what I forgot to bring to work today.... -
OK, today I tried to install Windows 10 on my laptop. The laptop was working fine, until I tried booting from the stick
Now I can't even get into the BIOS, even without having inserted the stick

Does anyone have a clue why and how I could fix it?18 -
Today I almost burned my hand from touching my (metal) laptop

I usually never put stickers on my laptop, as they usually fade away and leave nasty residue after a while, therefore I fucking hate having discovered stickermule, I have right now ~100$ worth of stickers favorited, I really have to hold back to not just pull the trigger on them and finally smash my laptop full of them, including my devrant stickers, that have been laying here for a long time now. 😫1
-
Well fuck. This laptop was nice, then the hinges decided to remove themselves from the mount points. Also a metal side rail mananaged break as well...
Anyone have good suggestions for laptops? Prefer machines with a distro of Linux on it, but not afraid to install8 -
Suggestion for a cheap, leightweight Laptop?
As I want to code outside, the screen should be bright, SD Card Slot would also be nice.
I actually wanted to buy a MacBook, but the prices are...5 -
I just bought a laptop (without OS, so i can put on linux without buying a useless windows license) on Amazon and now i can't wait for that2
-
Small laptop recommendations? Highest 15" I'll be installing Linux and mostly be programming doing research etc so don't need anything too power intensive I'm currently looking at the star lite ultrabook / laptop. Needs are long battery life, great keyboard.9

A guy asked on an online channel of programmers about buying a laptop and here's the perfect guide from an experienced programmer.8

So glad i moved from a desktop PC to a laptop for development. I still have 2 workstations (one at home and one at work) with 3 screens, mechanical keyboard + mouse. But if i ever have to demo to a client/PM i just un-dock and take my laptop to them. Plus if the office is loud i just go to another room.1
-
My road trip still lasts for another 5 hours and my laptop does not have power anymore 😧😧😧
I could refactor or comment so much code. Maybe add even more loggings and unit tests, but noooo 😔4 -
Does anyone know how to fix this on a laptop screen?
I think it's a pixel problem but I'm not sure.10 -

My laptop now includes a DevRant sticker!
If you also have stickers on your laptop I would love to see them. Share photos of your laptops in the comments! :-)8 -
Update to my laptop rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1822853/...
I finally got my gaming laptop back, with its motherboard changed under warranty, which was nice. Now all I gotta wait for is 1 month worth of Windows updates. Fun! -
Do you guys take your main laptop with you on vacation / travel abroad?
I can't afford to lose my laptop. Every work is saved in it. Some important files have been backed up to cloud. But that's it.
Can't risk getting it damaged or stolen or taken in custody when abroad.
But, if something in my server fucks up when I'm abroad, i want to be able attend it and get it addressed.
I'm thinking of buying a low cost portable laptop to use incase an emergency situation happens.
How do you guys manage such situation?8 -
I hate having to use Windows 10 for work 😭
And the laptop doesn't have an HDMI port and also doesn't connect to my monitor using an adapter 😕
I live share to my mac as a workaround, but that has its own problems :/4 -
I'm Ruby on Rails Developer, Currently using Dell vostro laptop ( it hangs like hell with Ubuntu)
Suggest me the best laptop for rails and other development.4 -
I will need a laptop for uni and I thought you guys could give me some tips on good brands/models. I want it to have at least 16GB of RAM, preferably a newer generation of i7 and dedicated NVidia graphics. The bigger the screen is the better. I don't care too much about the battery but I would like to have a few USB type A ports and some HDMI/DP outputs. The maximum price (shipping included) should be around 1000 - 1200€15

Maybe it's because I'm drunk but the extra 8gb Ram I just added to my laptop really makes it faster. Everything seems a little bit faster and I can now power up 2-3 virtual machines and IDE etc. without problems 😍 -
Rant but also !rant
When I got the new remote dev job, there was no laptop purchase involved. We were down a computer at home when a desktop died and there was a lot of sharing going on with only one laptop. So we spent more than we planned to for Christmas and bought a replacement for the dead desktop so I could have more use of one for my job.
Yesterday my new boss says "Oh, we should get you a new laptop. Here's some money."
Oh well, at least this way there is more to go around!3 -
I've been using my laptop for only 6 months ... And suddenly the screen is completely black, but the touch screen still works (super weird). Kinda freaking out after paying more than 1k$ for it and it only worked for 6 months..... 😠2

TL;DR Laptop suggestions.
I do all my work on my desktop, but I have a really shitty laptop. Been thinking about getting a better laptop. I want to use something that isn't Windows.
So any thoughts on:
- a Pixelbook
- a Mac18 -
Just realized HD(1366x768) screen is too small, and Eclipse UI too big.
Maybe it's time to buy a laptop!6 -

Guys, I'm planning to buy a new laptop for Dev purpose. My budget is under 45K INR. Need a laptop with 8GB RAM and I'm confused about the processor (i5 or i3 or AMD). Please suggest the processor I should choose and some laptop models meeting the above criteria.5

So my laptop battery just turned from ~21000 MWh capacity to ~3500 MWh within one night, and it literally can't be charged above 300 MWh.... I can't even do much without it just running out of power even though my charger's plugged in... Urghhhhh thanks Lenovo for making/using cheap hardware7

What laptop should I buy to run Linux?
My experience on my desktop with Nvidia is just horrible, so I'm considering to buy a laptop with the new AMD Ryzen when I go to university next year. I'm a little bit unsure about the compatibility with Linux though. Should I go for AMD, or buy a laptop with Nvidia graphics and pray everything works fine?
Do you have any suggestions? I would like to be able to do some light gaming, but I don't want it to be to heavy and I don't want to spend to much money either (around €800).
Do you have any good or bad experiences with running Linux on a laptop?
Are there things I should be aware of?33 -
Two weeks of camping ends tomorrow. Started missing coding after a week but no laptop carried with. Mind spends time thinking about projects to start.

That moment when you realize your laptop is two years old already and all the stickers you have on its lid cannot be moved to a new laptop you will buy one day. 😢😔3
-
Ugh why are people so tight!
I'm trying to sell a $1000 laptop for $600 and people are either not bothering to look at it or complain $600 is too much for a laptop -,-
Added that I'm willing to trade for a Mac of any sort so let's hope that adds something but fucking hell!
Gotta love not buying shit tech and trying to sell it -,-
Btw the laptop has been used for less than 2 hours -,-3 -
Did you end up with a desktop setup at home or do you strictly stick with a laptop and dock it at home?8

Any laptop suggestions? My budget is around £400, preferably AMD but Intel is acceptable
RAM isn't an issue as I have a spare 4GB ram stick
It's mainly just for programming, so a fancy GPU isn't important15 -

That feel when you're saving for a laptop and trying to work on a project for a client but your laptop is quite old (3 years and 5 months in my case) and decides to go crazy when for months ago, the same stuff open wouldn't lead to a variety of freezes.
I mean, there's new specs and stuff but spending in the £1-2 grand on a new one (at least one more up-to-date and with better specs) isn't going to happen anytime soon especially with the new job coming soon.
At least, I can do some of the stuff on my phone 😅. -
Recommend me a lightweight operating system for about 6 years old laptop with Intel Atom. 'nuff said I guess...21
-
RIP my fucking dog laptop. And FUCK Asus. The solution to fixing the fucking laptop is to get a new MB and display. But the motherboard is so God same expensive because you obviously have to solder every fucking component on it so that it's much more of a PITA.
PS yes I'm fucking angry but I hope y'all having a nice day.4 -
Great. So my laptop just died and it's time to send it to RMA. That's not a big deal. except I forgot to push few commits and now there's no way of doing it. Just great3

Any suggestions for a good beginner linux distro? Ive been looking at Elementary and Ubuntu, but im needing something that can still use the laptop touchscreen.

So my compiler has been compiling the newest version of my compiler for about five hours now, and progressed 10% in the last hour... Looks like my poor laptop is gonna have to pull an all nighter2

That feeling when your new laptop is arriving today but you're not getting home until late to set up the software you need...

So I'm considering buying the latest Asus G14 laptop.
The idea of buying a gaming computer came from my desire to play FS2020 and sim games like Snowrunner.
I'm not sure if I'll play more than 30 mins. I get this incredible guilt and tendency to want to throw up when I try to play games.. :/
Atleast, it would feel nice to know that i can play if i wish to.
Maybe I'll do video editing and 3D designing with laptop.8 -
I want to buy a new laptop and would like to double boot it with Linux and Windows 10. So should I buy a laptop with bundled Windows 10 OS or the other way round. Also will it be a problem if I buy a laptop with DOS OS ( DOS OS Supported)3

I'm developing on PC and when I'll get a sticker, I will buy laptop only to paste sticker on its back.
PC users strugles :(4 -
I was on an 8h bus ride yesterday, and thought "Hey, I take my Laptop with me, then I can do some tech." Normally I have my Laptop on a docking station, and use a nice big keyboard. End of the story; thinking of using the small Laptop keyboard demotivated me so much, that I didn't do anything but sleeping on the bus. Am I the only one who doesn't like small Laptops?

Finally put my desktop back together after about 2 years of keeping it in storage and now I feel a bit sad because my laptop has become obsolete 😂1

Hey, fellow devranters!
I'd like to know what is your laptop-os choose. I am looking for new laptop now and quite tempted by Mac but a lot of people say it is overpriced. Another option for me is putting new ssd to my old laptop and upgrading its ram. I am a little bit confused :/12 -

I'm in the lookout for a new laptop for my dev work and occasional gaming (Dota 2 only), needs to have at least 16GB, 256 SSD, decent battery life and portable.

Trying to find affordable new laptop with student's budget is like searching for a diamond crystal in dog's shit. It stinks awful lot.5

Found my grandmother's Vista laptop from '07. It has 3 problems:
1. Battery lasts 15 seconds at full charge (not a shock)
2. Plastic shell around screen is cracked (not badly, likely fixable with plastic welding)
3. IT'S SLOW AS FUCK
Point 3 is strange, considering the specs:
AMD dual-core CPU at 1600MHz (better than MY laptop...)
Some NVidia onboard GPU thing (no clue)
2x 512MB DDR2-L (immediately swapped out with 1x2GB and 1x1GB, the most we have at the house)
What I noticed, though, is that it's got a SOCKETED CPU (a rarity only like 3 years later), specifically an S1 socket. There's an AMD Phenom quad-core clocked at 1800MHz with that socket, for $16 on eBay no less!
However, it's a different processor family, so I don't know if it'd work in the board...
Anyone think it'd work?9 -
I'm on the hunt for a secondary laptop. Gonna try this Linux Arch and use that laptop for development. Anyone got any suggestion on a relatively inexpensive laptop that would fit that criteria?4
-
I'd love to get stickers, but first I need laptop instead of PC :D any ideas for good cheap laptop for web dev? :)8

Been using a MBP the last 5 years. I would like to move to pure Linux laptop. Any recommendations on laptop brand?
Back in the day it was always such a PITA getting Linux to run on a laptop due to non existent drivers for sound and wifi. Has any laptop manufacturer filled this gap yet?
I don't want to spend all my time getting the laptop to work, which is why I went with MBP. Reliability is my first requirement, followed closely by performance.5 -
Would you get a new laptop with Intel Celeron N3450, or slightly older with Intel Core i5 4310U? I'm talking both having 256 GB SSD, 8GB RAM and only iGPU? Both for pretty much same price.9
-
Anyone ever bought a laptop from ststem76 or from purism? I'm looking for a good laptop for development and gaming. (I'm a Linux fanatic btw)7

So yeah Microsoft, all your new windows 10 updates look great in theory, but I would rather you not burning my goddamn laptop!!! now the fan is crazy !!

Any recommendation (super) thin laptop under $1000?
I think of lenovo yoga, but I don't need the touch screen, and I think it's just upping the price.15 -
I currently have a piece of shit Acer. It made a bunch of weird beeps at me last night and the screen had a seizure. What brand of should I look at for a new laptop?
My last computer was a MacBook Pro that I loved. I didn’t have any problems with it until my cat spilled Pepsi on it. I’ve used Dells and Lenovo’s at work - they both got the job done.
Should I go back to Apple because I liked their laptop more than any other I’ve used or should I go for a Windows laptop that is priced reasonably? Should I try to build my own laptop?9 -
I'm looking for a good 10 inch laptop to run Linux. Standard size keyboard. I'd prefer atleast 4gb of ram and a quad core. Any recommendations?11

I know this is not a rant, so maybe I'm a *bit* off topic, but I need some help. I'm about to get a new laptop. I'm on my final year of uni and I think I'll focus on machine learning from now on. I'm between buying a Lenovo laptop (IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH6) and running ubuntu on it, or a 2019 MacBook Pro. The specs on the lenovo are better, I know, but I always kinda wanted a mac and now I'm torn between doing what's best and what will please my long time macbook desire. Any opinions? Thank you in advance!5

Currently on the market for a new laptop for work.
I'm thinking of Asus Vivobook 15 with 12GB ram and 256 GB SSD config. I don't trust Windows and it's performance on HDD. Since I'm coming from Macbook, I would really hate having to wait about 5 mins for system to be usable after boot up.
Slightly tempted to spend more money and go for a gaming laptop for that I can play Spintires sometimes. But not sure if it's a good idea to have a gaming config laptop for work.
It fucking sucks that there is not much selection of laptops or even let you try demo of laptops that are put for display in the shops here.2 -
Do you all rcmd me desktop pc or laptop for running vm and some heavy software like photoshop and premiere pro ?
Im deciding between a mid tier pc or a high end laptop after my laptop of 9 years just gone laggy n shows bluescreen everytime i open chrome.
Also, what gear are you using for your projects ?6 -
What laptop you are using for development? What would your suggestion for me?

I got an old laptop from my girlfriend that I can use for whatever I want.
As a programmer and computer nerd you can't deny that you wouldn't do anything with it, but what to do?
I want to use it for something, but can't figure out what. Maybe you have some ideas :D7 -
Any suggestions/tips or tricks how to find linux compatible laptop? I can't buy preinstalled linux laptop (system76, tuxedo, purism, etc) because is not available in my country.7

I use a Lenovo Thinkpad T580 with Ubuntu for work (the company I work for has given it to me). What gaming laptop do you recommend?8

Keycaps are like teeth to a laptop, it loses them with time and you can replace them but you don't until it really becomes a hassle without them. And sometimes you can even pimp them up to show how cool you are3

Does anyone here have a stack of stickers waiting for when their laptop is old enough it looks better plastered with stickers

I've been a windows user for my entire life (or at least since I had a computer).
Lately I've been contemplating buying a macbook.
Can someone give me advice/ pro's/ con's...
What I use my personal laptop for:
- programming (VSCode mostly)
- watching TvShows / Movies
- Playing minecraft (mc + mods will be the most heavy games played)
- Surfing the web
Why I'm thinking of buying a mac:
- mostly the battery life TBH
- compatibility with my iPhone
- (possibly for later) iPhone emulator (maybe XCode), It might be annoying to download some programs like Android studio, but trying to get a Mac OS VM with XCode on my windows is nearly impossible.2 -
I'm the only one here who cares little about hardware?
I hear people (even non IT ones) spending months in comparing computers and reading any technical spec (cache size, RAM frequency...) before buying one while I just give a glance to the main specs (CPU, RAM, GPU) and if they're decent enough and I like the price I buy, once I even bought a laptop while half drunk and I haven't regretted the purchase.2 -
Are there any benchmark tests for testing out laptop capabilities for development uses? Like building an Android project to figure out if one laptop is better than the other?1
-
Did someone tried to glue iron beads on their laptop instead of stickers? Playing with the idea right now and don't know how to put them on without damaging the back of the laptop.2
-
Lenovo x240, x230 or T430 and why. It won't be my primary device, I do most of my work at home on my desktop, I just want a laptop to school and when I go to cofee. I'm a working with Go, Vue and Flutter1

You know a good place to get stickers for my laptop?
