As a Designer I have to take a look at things that are beyond visible from my desk. So I have to have a laptop for the field work - an expensive one. And since you're not taken seriously without one it has to be a MacBook. Social pressure of that trade.
However I love being alone in my quiet room and thinking on ideas and solutions. This is where my big USB type C equipped monitor comes into play. Charges my macbook while having the big picture. -
I use a beefy laptop, but almost always I have it docked at my desk at home with two screens, keyboard and mouse.
-
WFH becoming the norm (with a day or two working on site at the company) I can’t imagine having a tower anymore.
-
An MacBook
An iMac
An Ryzen Desktop, 64GB, rtx 2070
An of course, our wimpy little quad core server for gitlab runners. -
Private? Desktop, primarily. Inaudible even under sustained 100% load, and still no thermal throttling - the CPU is just 18°C above room temperature. That's only possible with an overdimensioned CPU cooler. I also have a laptop, but don't use it much for now.
Work? WFH laptop to VPN into my company desktop. -
PC gamer since I was 12, so always had desktops for personal use. Laptops are useful but I've never been able to justify shelling out for a decent laptop on top the desktop. The dinosaur does fine for when I simply need a bigger screen than my phone.
Every place I've ever worked has given me laptops
Edit: spelling -
Desktop for stuff desktops are better at (gaming, continuous load etc). Laptop for stuff laptops are better at (portability, most work etc.). Server for stuff servers are good at (always-available remotely accessed continuous high performance that doesn't need to be in your room). Why limit yourself?

Hazarth95124yLaptop, I like having a constant stable environment for everything.
Technically I have two laptops now, a work one I was given and a personal one I use for side projects n stuff
haven't used a tower computer in literal years, sometimes I do maintenance on our home computer, but I don't use it anymore, it's mostly for the family -
pipe3274yI have a laptop because I move a lot, but use it docked on 3 external screen when home. That way I have only one stable environment for everything, while still getting the comfort a desktop would bring me.
I have a second laptop for gaming, that I intend to switch for a gaming desktop once I have enough money. -
A powerful desktop you can remote to with your phone, tablet, or thin laptop with a good battery life is the best option.
Laptop as a sole device can also be a convenient compromise if weight or performance doesn't matter, or if you need to connect to peripherials away from desk. -
Laptops are crap, sorry. Try to find one with ECC. Or one with a serial Interface, one with enough USB connectors (More than 6) or one with a possibility to remove the main disk to boot something you don't really trust. Its hard to find a laptop that fulfills a single one of this requirements and a PC that fulfills all of them.
I use a 10 years old Tower, i would not change it for a Laptop, no matter how new or shine the laptop is. The tower never had any problems, i had never a laptop that run that long without major problems. Never had any unexplained crashes or hardware problems on it, while i got them on other laptops and other computers without ECC.
You can't take a HDD or SDD from any other Computer and clone them on a Laptop, you can do that easily on a tower.
I sometimes need a laptop, because of mobility, i hate it. I don't understand people that prefer a laptop. -
@happygimp0 You can boot from USB sticks in a laptop - and while physically putting in another drive is a bit more work with a laptop, it's still the usual M.2 slot (unless you buy shittops).
Also, you can easily clone a disk from another computer and clone it onto a laptop. Just boot up Clonezilla on the other computer, take a disk image onto an external USB drive, then boot up Clonezilla on the laptop and restore that image.
That's how lazily I synced my new laptop to my existing desktop since I wanted to have Linux Mint also on the laptop. -
Desktop. For the sake of posture plus I fucking hate using trackpads. I don’t need to code on the go.
-
Laptop because I bought one when I started college, but if I knew I would be learning from home for most of my stay in college I would likely have bought a desktop and managed with my horrible old laptop when I needed one. Now my laptop has a dock + external keyboard, screen, and mouse, which it is always attached to when I am home.

Laptop + two towers girl..
Why? Cuz I can..
Started with one desktop, not the brightest of a bunch.. after a while, boss realised I need a better computer and ordered me a new one. Came with win10.. yay... First I had to check if product x will be running ok, also wanted to keep the old one with win7 in case it won't.. I got the new comp sorted out, but I've kept the old one as a personal fileshare, test & build env.. Also got a laptop once corona shit started since I cannot work remotely without a pc at home and taking either of towers is not an option since others connect to them and my vpn would have to always be on.. not smart, also not viable..
So yeah, bunch of work computers & no personal computer for me.. -
@johnmelodyme i see. I like laptop too. The portability. Especially if you didn't care much about pc customization and all
