Me: *hours of coding, develops a feature*
Code: I'm working..
Me: Oh good.. will monitor you for sometime.
Code: Ok, I'm done. I'll stop working now.
Me: WTF
Me: *sits for hours to solve bugs*
And when almost done,
VPN: Someone's having a good day, I'll disconnect you now.
Me: WTF
Me: *tries switching on/off VPN couple of times..*
When it starts to connect,
WIFI: Oh wait!! It's my turn to bid goodbye now. Have a nice day sir
Me: Of course !! The wifi
Me: *restarts router/ troubleshoot etc*
When wifi says connected...
Battery: Good job with wifi.. I'm down now..what you gonna do?
Me: Are you fucking kidding me???
Me: *connects charger, wait for laptop to switch on*
Windows: Updating....
Me: *jumps out window*13 -
My friend called me up once saying the new mouse he bought to use with his laptop wasn't working.
I told him to just plug it into the usb port and it should just work immediately.
After an hour of trying shitload of things I finally gave up and said I'll come over and have a look.
And there was his mouse.
Connected to a phone charger.
To a wall outlet.14 -
Had this with a relative. His laptop wasn't turning on, with or without charger so he brought it back to the store to fix it. It ran elementary os by the way (detail for later). Then he got it back after a week and we booted it and it had windows 8 installed (wtf indeed). So we called the service desk to ask about it since the issue was a broken charger (!!!). Their reply: oh yeah there was a weird system installed on it so we thought we'd reset it as well for you.
SERIOUSLY, THAT'S NOT YOUR FUCKING JOB!!
He is not tech savvy and he didn't know much about backups so that was literally about one year of work GONE. Yeah, I setup a cloud backup sync thingy for him right after that.7 -
Dear TSA,
That laptop charger in my bag is not a bomb, you can calm down now.
Sincerely,
The guy who clearly had a laptop in an airport1 -
On a tiny vacation in another country. Don't have a converter plug (for the power sockets) so borrowed one.
*connects laptop to charger* (old charger which might die soon)
*nothing happens*
*slight panic*
*tries different sockets*
*nothing*
😨😲😭
"you might want to check your phone with that thing as the socket seems loose as hell"
*tries phone with charger that definitely works*
*nothing*
😰🙌
That was a fucking panic attack right there 😅2 -
Me:
- Few days ago: Orders thinkpad
- Now: Checks email
- Sees shipping email from lenovo
*YES! Earlier than expected ship date by a full week*
- Opens email
- Package only contains the additional charger that I had ordered, I can't even use it without the laptop
*facepalm*4 -
WHAT THAT FUCK
I PLUGGED IN MY LAPTOP CHARGER TO THE WALL AND A HUGE SPARK APPEARED AND THE ENTIRE ELECTRICITY OF THE HOUSE FELL7 -
*receives an old business laptop as payment for refurbishing another one*
Hmm, this thing doesn't have a charger with it.. looks like it's taking 18.5V.. my HP laptop's charger supplies that but its barrel connector doesn't fit 🤔
Regular users: oh dear now I have to buy a charger with a fitting connector for this.. where do I even start?!
Me: Well I guess I could just remove the charging port and solder some wires straight into the board instead 🤔
But that voltage.. my HP laptop's charger is still in use and I don't really want to fuck around with that one.
Regular users: oh dear oh dear, shouldn't I just throw this laptop away?
Me: well I guess that I could just use one of the rails of my upgraded lab bench power supply for it?
Lab electronics saving the day, every day, time and time again.. fuck yeah 😎6 -
Aaaaand my whole world came crumbling down. All I have is a laptop with a battery backup of 15mins, and now the charger broke.
I was almost done with coding a nice feature, just few more lines and I would have been able to push.
But, rather it went dark. And now I can't code, nothing matters, everything is meaningless 😞10 -
So my HP laptop got a weird problem lately.
It doesn't charge when I plug in the charger(yes, i turned on the switch). So I began searching forums for a solution and then found out that there are so many people like me out there.
Then I was like ok, chill. There are many people like me, there must be a solution somewhere.
And after doing lots of research and trying all the solutions in the internet, the only thing that worked out is this ....
Step1 : turn on and the laptop and plug in the charger.
Step 2: Turn off the laptop.
Step 3: Now turn it back on and poof there you go, the laptop's charging.
And then I improvised the solution myself, which is u can replace the switch off part with Sleep which saved me some time.
And then whenever I try to show something my friends somethjng on my lap and the battery gets low, I do the ritual. For a brief moment their face becomes like dude I'm gonna kill you off, why the hell did u bring me here and now u r turning that off. And then I explain the history of my laptop.
Why HP whyyy ?12 -
2 days ago: *rants about HP's design choices on a laptop*
22 hours ago: *new video from GreatScott comes out, explaining all about voltage tolerances for the charger etc*
Coincidence? Maybe not 🤔4 -
I did it. I completely broke windows by plugging in my laptop charger.
The colors in this image have not been distorted at all.
Fuck this OS, royally.8 -
I will be working from home tomorrow.
*Today*
I am at office because fuck me! I forgot my laptop charger here. -
iPhones are ridiculously picky when it comes to finding a mate- um charger. And knowing why doesn't really make it any easier to understand why. If anything it baffles me more.
So, let's start with appliances that are not phones. Think Bluetooth headsets, keyboards, earbuds, whatever. Those are simple devices. They see 5V on the VCC line and 0V on ground, and they will charge at whatever current they are meant to. Usually it will not exceed 200mA, and the USB 2.0 spec allows for up to 500mA from any USB outlet. So that's perfectly reasonable to be done without any fuss whatsoever.
Phones on the other hand are smarter.. some might say too smart for their own good. In this case I will only cover Android phones, because while they are smarter than they perhaps should be, they are still reasonable.
So if you connect an Android phone to the same 5V VCC and 0V ground, while leaving the data lines floating, the phone will charge at 500mA. This is exactly to be within USB 2.0 spec, as mentioned earlier. Without the data lines, the phone has no way to tell whether it *can* pull more, without *actually* trying to pull more (potentially frying a charger that's not rated for it). Now in an Android phone you can tell it to pull more, in a fairly straightforward way. You just short the data lines together, and the phone will recognize this as a simple charger that it can pull 1A from. Note that shorting data lines is not a bad thing, we do it all the time. It is just another term for making a connection between 2 points. Android does this right. Also note that shorted data lines cannot be used to send data. They are inherently pulled to the same voltage level, probably 0V but not sure.
And then the iPhones come in, Thinking Different. The iPhones require you to pull the data lines to some very specific voltage levels. And of course it's terribly documented because iSheep just trying to use their Apple original white nugget charger overseas and shit like that. I do not know which voltage levels they are (please let me know!), but it is certainly not a regular short. Now you connect the iPhone to, say, a laptop or something to charge. An Android phone would just charge while keeping data transmission disabled (because they can be left floating or shorted). This is for security reasons mostly, preventing e.g. a malicious computer from messing with it. An iPhone needs to be unlocked to just charge the damn thing. I'm fairly sure that that's because the data lines need to be pulled up, which could in theory enable a malicious computer to still get some information in or out of it. USB data transmission works at at least 200mV difference between the data lines. It could be more than that. So you need to unlock it.
Apple, how about you just short your goddamn data lines too like everyone else? And while you're at it, get rid of this Lightning connector. I get it, micro USB was too hard for your users. I guess they are blind pigs after all. But USB-C solved all of that and more. The only difference I can think of is that the Lightning connector can be a single board with pads on either side on the connector, while in USB-C that could be at the socket end (socket being less common to be replaced). And at the end of the day, that really doesn't matter with all the other things that will break first.
Think Different. Think Retarded. Such tiny batteries and you can't even fucking charge them properly.6 -
Pulled an all-nighter
Was too busy ans haven't had any time to eat anything next whole day.
35.5 hour sleep deprived, cameback home with takeouts
Let's pull the repo before i start eating.
Open the laptop and connect the charger while laying on bed.
*fell asleep and woke up 9 hours with laptop still running*
The worst part is that the problem i was trying to solve is still there.9 -
Asus have now decided that a removable battery is a feature people do not need anymore on a powerful laptop.
My battery or charger had a fit and blew the fuse on my charger and broke the battery, and now I have to send my laptop back because they can't send me a new battery, as replacing it myself would void the warranty.
Please for the love of all that isn't completely retarded, nobody start taking more pages out of Apple's book, even some completely non-technical people could handle changing a battery before, this benefits no one.
To make things worse, I'm on holiday right now and leaving the country for a year a few weeks after I get back, so if they can't get it back to me fast enough, I won't have the laptop for the whole bloody reason I bought it for, just because some smart arse designer has clearly never owned a laptop in their life.2 -
I guess I had an EMP attack in my home.In a single day my laptop charger burst,my desktop monitor got damaged and my Lumia phone has stopped opening.Dont know what to do13
-
Forgot my laptop charger in the hotel, flight leaves in 10 minutes, and my computer is at 2% battery life.
I just need to build this code and push! Will the code be pushed in time? Stay tuned to find out!!
... nah jk it just died. 😧 -
cold, wet and depressing autumn mornings/days.
Aaahhh, it's that time of the year again when you appreciate how hot your laptop and its charger get.
My feet enjoy my charger :)))10 -
We had a blind auction at work. Selling off 'redundant hardware'
Most of it was old crap but a bit a couple of bids in for shits and giggles. Also, I'm a desktop man but we have rolling blackouts so an older laptop for the simple sake of having something bigger than my phone to browse definitely has some appeal.
So there was an old HP Elitebook 8540W. A chonky boi if ever I did see one.
Spec sheet as listed
4GB DDR3
i7 M 640 @ 2.80 Ghz
128GB SSD
Win 10 Pro
"not booting up/ power button flashing"
So bid R100. Now for context, a petrol is R22 a liter. A Big Mac is R43, a Big Mac meal is R90
So basically I big so I could harvest the SSD. And I won.
Much to my surprise, I simply attached the correct charger and it boots fine. The drive was empty though but that's fine cause I was gonna chuck Ubuntu on it anyway. Also found it was in fact 8GB of RAM. It also has a blu ray drive
So in summary, for the price of 1.1 Big Macs I got:
Full 1080p 15.6"
128GB Samsung SSD
8GB ram
First gen i7
Blu ray player
I'm most not sad about the 900x that I bid on as well. It was a cute little thing, my plan was to steal the ram and ssd out of this thing and put it in that, then boom ultra portable little machine for R400. Oh I also got an old monitor with a feint line down the screen for a grand total of R18 -
Windows not powering off when I press the shutdown button.
Mandatory long rant warning
Oh my fucking god, how many times have I lost my shit because of this fucking bullshit.
When I press the shutdown button, I want you to shut the fuck down you sorry excuse for an operating system.
Me and my friends want to hang out together, so I shut down my PC and walk over to their house, expecting an intense session of doing programming stuff and debating linux distros. Whatever the fuck we do when we get together.
I get to their house and pull out my laptop,, only its hot as fuck. And then I see it: the battery indicator is red. "What the balls?" I think to myself. I open the lid, and guess what?
WINDOWS DIDN'T FUCKING SHUT DOWN, AND IT STAYED ON THE POWERING OFF SCREEN ALL THIS FUCKING TIME. WHAT THE FUCK?
Now, my laptop has a bomb ass battery, so I didn't even bring a charger with me, and now I'm fucking stuck at a programming session with friends without a computer. FUCKING BULLSHIT.
If this was a one time thing, I wouldn't have cared so much, but this happened countless fucking times. Too many.
I would have deleted this cum socket of an operating system months ago if it weren't for the Windows exclusive software I need for school, and now that Steam supports games for linux, Windows has even less of an excuse to stay on my fucking laptop.
Windows is supposed be fucking simple, but linux takes it by a goddamn long shot. When I type "shutdown now" or "poweroff", linux shuts the fuck down, no questions asked. And if I ever need root permissions, I just type "sudo" instead of restarting the fucking program and requesting admin privileges.
Most of the software I use is compatible with both MacOS and Windows, and I already have Ubuntu installed on my laptop, so what do you guys think, should I butcher Windows off of my SSD and give MacOS a try?
Also, what is this magic? Ranting actually calmed me the fuck down... I need to start ranting more.
FUCK MICROSOFT AND FUCK WINDOWS, I WISH I COULD BURN TO FUCKING OBLIVION6 -
Went into home office today.
Forgot the laptop charger.
Half the days over and I'm at 16% battery.
Fuck.10 -
I went home for Chrismas, I got my laptop with me but forgot its charger in my renthouse. Battery is old and it takes about 10 mins for it to run out of power.
What am I supposed to do now?
Btw Merry Christmas!3 -
If I unplug a charger then my laptop immediately turns off
if I run a hw diag [boot into diag mode], it says I have a healthy battery, but a faulty ssd
<wat.png>8 -
Why every day I have to fight for a charger cos the manager needs his phone on a constant charge from a power socket.
Fuck you and no I don't care that your shits gonna die now and yes, every fucking day we're doing this, don't fuck with me. My laptop > your phone and your ingress game2 -
Almost died few minutes ago. My laptop was plugged to power, while I was using it, for last one hour. Then power cut and my laptop went off too. I was really afraid. Just 9 months ago I purchased a new battery for my laptop. When power came back, and I restarted my laptop, to check status, it was saying "Plugged in. Not charging" on windows. Now I was in serious shock. "Fuck battery died again. This time so soon". Also no red light which reflects charging but white, which reflects "laptop running on direct supply". It gave me some indication when it stopped showing red light during charging for last couple of days
I removed the battery and reinserted it. Replugged the charger. Now it's charging. And red light is back
This makes me even more serious. As similar to this, is what happened with me last time battery died.
Now let's see whether my laptop battery is going to see this night or not. Next few hours are crucial8 -
My laptop charger is dead and my laptop can't work without it. So, basically I can't even look at code.
Colleague calls, says there is a problem with package.json and it requires my immediate attention as the APIs need to be deployed.
Me enters Sherlock mode, and remembers that I have a git hook which took a backup of my code every time I pushed and saved it on my headless tiny CHIP.
I get excited, and do an SSH from my phone, hoping to see the faulty code/file. But all I see is an outdated repository because I am an idiot who forgot to turn the fucking CHIP on after I shut it down for cleaning.
This is the most anti climatic ending I have been ever part of.3 -
Got fresh battery for my laptop from Green Cell. Finally can use it for longer than 15 minutes without charger....
-
The default USB voltage hould have been specified to 6 instead of 5 volts.
Six (6) volts would allow for longer cables than five (5) volts do, since the spare voltage compensates for the resistance of cables. This is even more crucial for USB hubs. USB hubs are highly dependable upon these days due to laptop vendors dropping the number of USB ports down to two or even one. I am looking at you, Medion.
If several devices are connected to a USB hub, the voltage can quickly drop below 4.5 volts due to the resistance between the USB hub ports and the computer's USB port, causing some devices to restart themselves even if the computer's USB port is not over capacity. If it were over capacity, it would just regulate down its output voltage to prevent overcurrent.
Lithium-ion batteries need at least 4.3 volts arriving at the battery terminals to fully charge, and mobile devices are typically not equipped with a boost converter. Even if they were, they are rather inefficient, meaning they would produce significant heat and waste a power bank's energy. Other USB devices such as flash drives and peripherals might power off below 4.5 volts. However, 6 volts have solid 1.7 volts of margin to 4.3 volts, more than twice the margin of 0.7 volts that 5 volts have. On the way from the power supply to the end device, the voltage has to pass several barriers which weaken it, including the cable, connector endings, and the end device's internals such as the charging controller.
Sure, there are quick charging standards such as by Qualcomm and MediaTek which support elevating voltages to nine (9), twelve (12), and even twenty (20) volts. However, they require support by both the charger and mobile device. If six (6) volts were the default USB voltage, all devices would have been designed to accept this voltage, and longer cables could have been used anywhere. Obviously, all USB devices should be able to run on five volts as well.
Six volts would have been more stable, flexible, and reliable.14 -
I don't know which one is worse.
Freezing of laptop while am important demonstration or battery dying in the same situation.
I forgot the charger back home and the only thing client could make out was that the software we made bricked my laptop right after opening it and that I was making excuses to cover it.1 -
Yesterday was my deadline for a programming project at uni and my laptop charger exploded when I started working.4
-
When you have an important presentation and you are so ready for it, and then you find out you forgot to pack your charger and that you didn't back up the presentation somewhere online and nobody in your entire tech savvy college has a charger compatible with your fancy ass gaming laptop and now you have to commute all the way back and come back in time to do the presentation.3
-
OMFG, Dell, why can't you be normal and make your batteries die like any other batteries - by simply switching the laptop off immediately when the charger is unplugged???
Guess what it looks like when a JD25G (XPS13 9530) battery is dying (still 88% health)!
Constant screen flickering (yes, even in BIOS). Good thing I'm not an epileptic - my screen is fucking strobing!!!
I know it's a battery, because I had the same issue some years ago when I replaced the died original one with a cheapo made by GreenCell. Boi that was fun - I saw my laptop do miraculous things I never would've thought of! Screen flickering was one of them. As soon as I replaced that turd with an original one all these magic powers went away.14 -
So a few months ago I got a computer with Windows 10 on it, and kind of ditched the shitty laptop that had Ubuntu (I loved Ubuntu, fucking despised the laptop, since keys were sticky or missing and it couldn't last a few minutes off the charger) so just now I decided to try Linux Elementary, since I'm getting sick and tired of Win10!
Don't judge me, I'm not skilled enough for Arch...6 -
FUCK ASUS FUCK service centers
Fuck Asus. My laptop charger was not working and I called them. These fucking people asked me to get my warranty approved because according to thier database they only have manufacturing date. So they said send us the invoice and we will update it So they wanted me to wait 5 days to get an entry updated in their database. 😑😑 After this shit. I have to wait 7 days for a new charger. These people and Thier service it's shit shit shit4 -
Multi-mini-rant time!
1. The Case of the Craptop
Someone wants me to fix their permadead battery, cut-up charger, and what amounts to a laptop held together with GUM... all with software. The charger is like 6 bends from snapping entirely, and requires fucking with. Hard drive is on last legs. Battery's like $50 on its own.
Fuck me...
2. The Fuckery Continues...
Wednesday, it's gonna be -30°F or worse with wind chill. School isn't closing. Normal temps are like 40°F rn, so it's not like it's usual weather or anything.
Fuck me. Again. -
My one year hp laptop not charging to full.Needs calibration of battery.:(
Gotta calibrate it.
Anyone else faced the same issue?2 -
Only today have I realised that laptops will run slower if the power supply is not sufficient. If batt or the charger is too weak. And sometimes a charger slows the laptop the fuck down. Or even freezes it (for some reason) to halt.
I need a more powerful USB-C charger
I always thought laptops and charge controllers/batteries were tuned to ensure the power the device needs and disconnect the charging or leak energy from the battery if a charger is too weak. I stand corrected6 -
Higher refresh rates are an absolute garbage feature in warm countries.
My laptop switches to 300 Hz refresh rate, automatically, when I plug the charger in. And 2 mins later, my laptop is a literal oven and the fans sound like a fighter jet flying right above ur head.
My phone has a 144 and 120 Hz refresh rate feature but I never use it. I played a game of PUBG Mobile on 120 Hz and it made my phone so hot I couldn't hold it properly.9 -
This month is a nightmare,
1. Laptop battery dead
2. Laptop hinge broke
3. NIC Card dead(no idea but maybe because of the hinge )
4. Power Jack got fucked
5. Laptop Fan kinda dead(sometimes work sometimes don't maybe due to power issue)
6. Mobile's charger wire fucked
-_-3 -
Question for the electrically minded.
I have a laptop with a 19v input.
I have a portable UPC with 2 voltage options in the range of this, I can undervolt at 16v (the laptop battery voltage) which works with a small firmware correction to ignore a board sensor, the other option is to slightly overvolt to 19.5v which I assume the laptop could handle through its input regulation.
Can anyone confirm if a .5v variance at charger is within tolerance? It would be an overvolt of 2.5%5 -
My Laptop recently lost his mobility. I think my battery died ;_;
i3-status-bar shows me a nice 0,00% and as soon as my charger disconnects, it shuts down. Hope My insurance is still active... -
Alright. Got a new adapter (note: my laptop charger has a US prong and I have the European standards but it still tolerates 220V).
it appears that the tiny arcs that were made turned into HUGE sparks because the electricity went to the adapter and because the US prongs were exposed (bc my adapter was bullshit) then I got DOUBLE the voltage running into 1 charger (1 time for the adapter and 1 time for the normal exposed US prongs) so the breakers popped.
(this is my theory don't bully me for being inaccurate lool)9 -
Office manager just mandated that our standing desks would have a "cable pouch" installed at the rear for cable management. My cable tray **was** the neatest of everyone in dev, now it's unscrewed on the floor and all my cables plus the laptop charger are hanging loose, because notmyjob.jpg and contractors generally DGAF.
Oh, and they didn't install it flush with the rear of the desk, presumably because they didn't want to take off my laptop stand. So it's right in the way of my feet when I'm sitting.
Nothing that I can't fix with a screwdriver in my own time, fortunately. -
android devs/linux users, a quick help is needed.
My Ubuntu is not detecting my phone for debugging , but rather its just charging it.
(My phone should show a notification of being connected as a MTP device, but nops, it is not detecting laptop at all, it connects as if I have connected it to a charger)
This problem just started today, idk how or why...6 -
My dell's battery is dying and refuses to charge unless I fuck with the damn wire (charger works perfectly on my brother's dell). I know how to and have replaced dell batteries for similar models before on multiple occasions when I was a tech assistant in high school only 3 years ago but my dell warrenty won't mail me a battery for me to replace myself. Instead requiring I send them my laptop (can't since it my laptop I use for college work and can't go without it for a week or two unless I want to fail out). So guess I have to fucking find a battery on Amazon and spend money doing what my warrenty should cover
I understand why they don't allow users to do their own repairs. I'm just annoyed at having to find the battery online and spend money7 -
TFW your laptop battery dies twice as fast as yesterday because you're compiling all the things ... but you don't want to go back inside yet.
I'll stay out here just 2 more percent, then I'll grab the charger. -
Used another charger on my laptop (same manufacturer). Moments later battery icon starts flashing and notifications pop up about it "maybe needing to be replaced".
Hmmm....4
