Using Ubuntu for the first time on my new XPS-13 Dev. Ed.

I'm loving the OS but it sure is frustrating. Can't even get Spotify to download -.-

I do own a HI-end XPS 13 w/ i7. I have it for more than 3 years by now. It's a fucking beast! It's running cold, VERY snappy, does its job VERY well and VERY fast. I cannot imagine owning a faster machine...

Today I've noticed that all the 3 years I've been running in powersave mode (cpu capped at 1.7 GHz).

Okay, it's getting a bit annoying to _hear_ my graphics hardware (NOT the fans. The circuits) working when I'm doing something on the screen.. Sometimes it feels like it's gonna snap and burst in flames or smth..

OMFG, Dell, why can't you be normal and make your batteries die like any other batteries - by simply switching the laptop off immediately when the charger is unplugged???

Guess what it looks like when a JD25G (XPS13 9530) battery is dying (still 88% health)!

Constant screen flickering (yes, even in BIOS). Good thing I'm not an epileptic - my screen is fucking strobing!!!

I know it's a battery, because I had the same issue some years ago when I replaced the died original one with a cheapo made by GreenCell. Boi that was fun - I saw my laptop do miraculous things I never would've thought of! Screen flickering was one of them. As soon as I replaced that turd with an original one all these magic powers went away.

Alright dev's, I have pretty much given up on ChromeOS and Chromebooks, my Samsung Chromebook Plus is far from the rock solid stable and battery sipping champion it used to be, constantly crashing, sluggish, 4 hours of battery at most, terrible android performance and the list goes on (Plus fucking bullshit Pixel device exclusive features can fuck off)

I use my Macbook Pro more than ever but the lack of being able to install Linux is a massive blow, so I'm looking for some laptop recommendations and here are the criteria.

1. Don't want a tablet
2. Prefer a clamshell but will deal with a convertibal
3. Max price of $1000 AUD (~$4.25 USD)
4. If it has dedicated graphics, prefer AMD
5. Prefer windows to not be pre-installed but can deal with it if it is

Was previously looking at the XPS line but um... Base model 13 inch is ~$1600 AUD so nope .-.

Just replaced my dead battery on my Dell XPS 13 2013 with a brand new one. One whole month I was unable to unplug without a shutdown, not to mention that I couldn't boot it easy due to the dead battery... finally... justice.

I need a new Laptop for coding when I'm not at home. My first thougt was to buy the new MacBook Pro, so I also could compile my Flutter app for iOS. But then I saw the problems from other people on the web with this machine. Today I saw the Dell XPS 13, it looks great, runs windows and everything is fine. So now I couldn't decide. I want to compile for iOS but also want that damm hot Dell XPS 13. Life is torture.

So, I recently switched from a windows laptop (XPS 13) to a macbook pro and my friend has been bugging me about whether I'll ever go back. He is a wannabe frontend developer and wants a windows laptop. No matter what I tell him, he seems to have tunnel vision. What are your thoughts on this? And what is your personal experience with Windows vs Apple for development?

Got an XPS 9365 and decided after some time to remove dual boot and switch to Arch Linux entirely.

After a week or so I realised this piece of shit doesn't support supend-to-ram properly!
in s2idle the battery drains in about 20h. Also I have to run the SSD in AHCI mode to boot Linux which is slow as fuck!

Seriously Dell, a 1.5k laptop that has a great screen but can't even suspend properly or make good use of the pcie SSD? Fuck you!

Need a replacement ASAP.
Suggestions welcome. 13-14" QHD screen, 8th gen CPU, good battery...

Ok, so I'm a student and in my free time, I mostly write a bit of python, C++ and a bit Haskell for fun...

I wanted to try out Android development now...

HOLY FUCKETY FUCK, THIS SHIT TAKES TIME!

most of the time, I get an idea, open vscode and start typing (maybe install some modules for like 10 minutes), not with this: Android studio took hours to download with all the needed SDKs and libraries, then I created a new empty(!) Activity, then fucking Gradle needs hours to get it fucking ready... On a fucking XPS 13 9370!

How do you guys cope with that waiting, does it scale that way to bigger projects?
I would call myself rather patient, but if I have an idea, I don't want to set up the most basic environment for 3 hours...

Man that shit is bulky...

Whelp, so much for Dell making good on the 32gb sku for the xps 13 9300. 8 days late and 16gb short with minuscule storage at a $100 premium.

Has anyone here tried to run Linux on a Dell Latitude 7480? And if so, how'd it go?

I can't decide on what laptop I want for Christmas, it's either a XPS 13 or a Latitude 7480. I know the xps has good Linux support but the 7480 seems to be a mixed bag. If I choose the xps, I'd have to get some dongles as well sine it doesn't even have a HDMI port. Opinions? 🤔

What's your guys opinion about what to choose between a recent mac or the 2018 dell XPS 13?

I've been planning to get one of those for a while now, maily to use for college, work and coding (+ photo editing a lot).
But spending so much money, I want to make the good choice, and I'm still not sure.. I've never used macOS, but it seems interesting, but a bit scary too.

What and why would you guys choose?

Since my XPS battery is dying I'm flirting with an idea of a new laptop. Requirements:
- 13" display
- 4k display (I'm so used to high-res that x1080 looks like accessibility mode)
- 16 (worst case), 32 (OK), 64 (possible?) GB RAM
- long battery life
- i7 or Ryzen equivalent (I need lots of ram, lots of computing power)
- plays nice with Linux
- GPU preferably integrated (don't need a separate GPU)
- ultrabook (small, compact, light) (I don't like to exercise while carrying it. God forbid I'd grow a muscle... )
- purrrrtty :)

So far the best candidate I've found is... XPS13 again :D The setup I'm after costs ~1.6k€ which is not that bad, really.

Is there anything else in the market that'd meet the criteria? Anything worth looking into? Better deals?

Not a rant, just a story.

We never had a computer, maybe one for a few months, and the only thing I remember about it is playing "brick breaker". My next encounter with a computer was when my dad bought a laptop in 2007, but I didn't use it since I was young and had no idea about it. We still have the laptop (Compaq) but it has some battery issues. Then the next and last until now is my first ever proper computer, my XPS 13. As for interaction with computers, we had computer class in 11th and 12th grade in my school, but they had the crappy old computers with pirated Windows XP running on every machine. (This is 2015-16).

So, I never had a proper interaction with computers in my childhood.

The first computer I ever had interaction with is my XPS 13.

Question for those running Linux on a Dell XPS 13 with a 4k display. What distro do you use? I tried using Ubuntu 16 but had to uninstall it due to absolutely terrible battery life and heat.

Ive been doing fine using the Linux subsystem for windows, but I kinda wanted to give Linux another go and dual boot just for the heck of it.

Okay so I need some help. I need a new laptop which will hopefully last at least through my 4 years of school but I'm not sure which one to get. Currently I'm between the Acer swift 3 and the Dell xps 13. I was wondering if anybody could offer some insight on their experiences with either. All I'd really be using it for would be day to day stuff and programming nothing too crazy

Had to face the music and make the jump from Ubuntu 22.04 to Fedora 36. Am I have to say it’s been night and day so far. Everything is snappier. Yeah dnf is very slow in comparison to apt but there’s changes you can make to speed things up and the nifty terminal interface is a great change and helps to make up for the speed issues.

Came with Python 3.10 installed, Gnome and gtk4 apps are nice, fluid and up to date and the random slowdowns, freezing and restarts of Ubuntu running the version of Gnome are nonexistent.

For the life of me I can’t see why Ubuntu would drop the ball like this. I have a Dell XPS 13 developer edition and this is the best it’s ever ran. Even wifi connectivity is better despite of the crap WiFi card that ships with this machine.

I want to love this version and while it is the most graphical appealing and functional version of Ubuntu I’ve ever used. The memory management issues make it damn near unusable.

Trying to decide between the new Dell XPS 13 Developer edition and the Lenovo yoga 920......

Oh and the MacBook pro is a dark horse....

Is anyone using a Dell XPS 13 (9370)? This is the 2018/2019 model.

Is anyone of you also facing the thing that is gets extreme hot, when charging? And I really mean only when charging. Not hitting it with a Max load.
Mine gets as hot as it can possibly be and it starts thermal throttling.

On battery, everything is fine and the laptop is cool as ice.
Both situations are under normal load. Nothing heavy ... CPU mostly idle - rarely over 25% utilisation / thread.

I run Linux on it. Not Shure if it is a compatibly thing, this is why I am interested if others are having this issue.

Disclaimer: I'm surprisingly bad with hardware.

Bonus will come in soon and its time for a new laptop. Had my xps13 since ~2016 and I absolutely loved it - the keyboard is amaaazing.. But the display is broken and as its a touch, its ridiculously expensive to replace so that's not an option..

Want to keep it around 1k$ and mostly care about the keyboard being nice, robust case (not plastic), size (no bigger than 13") and storage (at least 1TB SSD).
Ideally it would have an integrated SD slot and at least 1 USB-A...

Any suggestions? I'm gonna put Linux on it anyway so performance just has to be medium.

Thinking about getting another xps but they got a good bit more expensive and I know there's other devices our there nowadays that check the boxes, like thinkpad for example.

Just looking for some opinions, advice and suggestions.

Ok so I have to wait until October in order to find out if XPS 13 is still better than a Macbook Pro. I do have a Macbook Pro (mid 2010), but Dell's product is so good, comparing prices.
