Coding Teacher: "you'll need your laptops for the exam. To prevent you from cheating I'll disable the network now"
...pulls out the network cable on his machine...
"okay you can start now"

Why are the fastest laptops always considered "gaming" laptops and look like fucking alien spaceships? 😩
They're ugly as fuck45 -
Users: Are you going to make your Products cheaper and put better GPUs and CPUs in your desktops and laptops?
Apple:7 -
You know why i hate lenovo with a burning passion? Not because they make industrial waste and sell it. Not because they trick non tech people into buying their garbage. No, i hate them because their shitass laptops dont even fit in my rubbish bin.28
-
Me when I go the IT guy for the 7th time, asking for yet another software installation, because I can't install my own stuff on work laptops.5
-
Saw this quote in a local newspaper. The guy is against buying laptops for school kids which I also am against but he makes the wrong argument. 25 years ago my school had computer rooms where we learnt how to code and although I don't use that language now it is still the same concepts as any modern language.21

Mouse pads are for poor people. Rich and genuine developers always use laptops.

Got 2 Computers and 2 Laptops
1 is using Elementary OS
1 is using Arch
1 is using Linux Mint
1 is using OSX
And 0 Windows
Feels good man!15 -
Holding a Linux install fest in college and being asked 'are laptops required?'. No. We're installing Linux in your brains.4
-
We have an API which returns 600 MB of JSON.
Because client "Wants to see everything first and then apply filters, just like Excel".
FML
Edit and ofc thier laptops with core i3 and 4GB of ram can't even process that.40 -
My cousin bought me a backpack big enough for both laptops and all the gear I need (with pockets for all). I'm a happy nerd 😄8
-
LAPTOPS is basically identical to PAPRIKA on a swipey phone keyboard.
So today there were 5 smartass junior devs sitting in a meeting with bell peppers, because I asked them to bring their paprika.8 -
Brought two laptops: Linux and windows
Forgot charger for windows.
Graphics not working properly in linux
Three hours of package installation, documentation diving, package removal, driver fuckery and other assorted fun
I can now play Minecraft.4 -
Linux you are just the perfect OS in all terms but please do something for gamers. I cant keep on switching laptops for work and playing dota. Hell even the keyboard layout is like way different in both.21
-
My employer wants our development team to change to laptops instead of the setup we have .. which is a PC with two monitors16

How millionaires deal with laptops.
1. Buy a gaming laptop.
2. Install any OS.
3. Open IE11.
4. Place cursor in the new search bar in top right.
5. Type 4k wallpapers.
6. Download anything.
7. Open in MS Photos.
8. Right click, Set as > Wallpaper BG
9. Leave it in the corner.
10. Sell it at double 2 days later.14 -
"I think my next laptop is going to be a Chromebook. I can do everything from browser and any heavy computing/coding I will just ssh to home. Sounds good."
3 days later, my Chromebook is running Ubuntu 80% of the time since I bought it.18 -
There is power cut in my college area sometimes...
Once we were in computer lab, when power cut occurred. So fan, tubelights went off.
I heard one girl ask her friend "how are laptops on?"
That moment.... Only I know how I controlled my laugh....1 -
This is the greatest day ever! We are the best at math in our school, so they upgraded our classroom! Now we have a giant Windows 10 touchscreen monitor and 30 laptops...7
-
I just fixed a wireless driver issue on my friend's HP laptop. I had to download driver source separately and build it and install it..
Bloody RT3290.. Turns out the WiFi doesn't work by default on laptops with this chip and Ubuntu 16** -
So instead of 15 tech-stickers from china, I got 33 rick and morty stickers and actually am not mad, because now I can finally make proper use of my devrant stickers I got a long time ago
the dead morty isn't yet attached to it, because I might get other stickers, that could need space (tiny laptops do make you picky), so I'd slap him on somewhere else or inbetween, that's also the first time I have actually ever put any stickers on my laptops12 -
Shouldn't devRant build a proper website rather than a small sized webapp? :p
C'mon devRant, we developers are using our laptops half the day!14 -
Whoever invented glossy screens for laptops should be shot! I can't get in the zone for coding while staring into a freaking mirror!!5
-
I accidentally broke our office’s tablet device. Operations manager said it will be deducted from my salary next month.
Few weeks later, my operations manager breaks his laptops touch screen. I almost did a naked run in excitement.9 -
Each sticker on a race car increases speed by a small amount, which is why they all have so many. Same thing with laptops.3
-
Growing up with thw crappiest netbook for 8 years, then a regular laptop, now an i3 laptop.
It pains me to see my classmates having i7 laptops and all they do with it is watch movies and browse the internet. All that wasted potential!
(Virtual Box, proccessing speeds, multitasking, and games! Donr get me started on games!)9 -
I fucking hate it when I see videos or read articles saying "you don't need a powerful laptop for development"
Do you even code?
From mobile to web Dev. Every tool now demands a lot ram and cpu power to run.
You at least have an ide and chrome open. These with the OS can reach the 8gb ram limit.
Also the screen, you need atleast a 1080p! I had a 15in 768p laptop for 5 years. I hated development on that.
Fucking hate people who think we can develop on a potato.32 -
I've tried so many laptops as dev workhorses. Dell, hp, a few apples, and now after 20 years, a ThinkPad.
Never. Going. Back.9 -
Advertising your laptops as "linux-laptops" but shipping only with nvidia-gpu should be punishable by death.25
-
5" phones are too big.
15" laptops are too big.
Mid tower cases are too big.
Yet the market seems to disagree with me.24 -
I have nothing against windows (use it on main pc) but man does it get slow on "not top of the line" laptops. Linux here i come.15
-
Huge dev-team presentation today with YouTube livestream link available to all clients.
Management wanted us to test our laptops, connections and cables to the bone, so that every computer will work 100% while the stream is running.
You know what didn't work?
The goddamn streaming camera device.1 -
I think I am the only person on the universe that doesn't like stickers on laptops.
1 or 2 could be fine, but more than that is just ugly for me.5 -
We are building this big-data engine for a client's product for which we were using a cluster on GCP and they were billed ~1100$ for the last month's usage.
The CTO - the CHIEFFUCKING TECHNOLOGY OFFICER told us to hook up 5-6 laptops in our server room and create our own cluster because they cannot afford so much bill.6 -
Hardware of laptops today.
Displays: Glossy screens everywhere. "Hurr durr it has better colors". Idgaf what colors it has, when the only thing I can see is the wall behind me and my own reflection. Make it matte or get it out.
Touchpads: Bring back mechanical buttons. Haptic feedback dying with touchscreens/surfaces is a tragedy. "But we can have bigger touchpad area without buttons" ...why? the goal shouldn't be 1:1 touchpad vs. display ratio. It ain't a bloody tablet.
Docking stations: Some bright fucker figured out that they can utilize USB C. That thing keeps falling out with slightest laptop movement disconnecting all peripherals (guess why microUSB had those small hooks?). Also it doesn't have sufficient throughput, so the 5 years old dock can feed 3 full HD monitors just fine and the new one can't.
Keyboards: Personally I hate chiclet. And it's everywhere, because "apple has it so we must too". But the thing I hate even more is retardation of the arrow keys (up and down merged into size of one key), missing dedicated Home/End/PgDwn/PgUp buttons and somebody deciding the F keys are not needed and started replacing them with some multimedia bullshit.
My overall feeling is that this happens when you give the market to designers and customer demand. You end up with eye candy and useless fancy gadgets, with lowered ergonomy and worse features than previous generations of the same hardware. My laptop dying is my daily nightmare as I have no idea with what on the current market I would replace it.5 -
Keep your computers and laptops clean you disgusting fucks.
Went to my boss’s office to leave a document and when i saw his laptop i almost vomited.6 -
Me: "hey CEO, that product that's only had 3 devs on for a couple of years has grossed a million brit bucks 2 years running. Any chance we could get some laptops for the team that aren't heavy as fuck and 4-5 years old. Maybe some monitors that aren't tiny and dull as fuck?"
CEO: "no"
Also, what's people's dream dev gear?9 -
>first day at programming school
>we have to bring our own laptops
>teacher asks who is using windows
>every one raised their hands, except me...
>fuckme.jpeg
>teacher says: sorry, but we don’t support mac/linux
>twitchy_eye.tar.gz
>my inner voice: then why the fuck do we have to bring our own laptops, if you don’t support all fucking systems...
>teacher: so, do you guys ever heard of Visual Basic?
My point is, that a PROGRAMMING school should support all platforms if they consists that we have to bring our own machines to class.8 -
I still laugh when I see people cover their laptops webcams, like as if Australian internet could hold up someone spying on you through a video stream, at most they would see 4 pink pixels!
-
Finally, got this piece of beauty and badass combined, just to get some peace at work...
Now, dare those noisy neighbors, who doesn't silence their mobile and laptops, making loud chimes in IM, playing music on speakers and knocking at my desk when I'm on headphones and clearly don't want to be disturbed...7 -
Do you ever go into a public space and see everyone with their dell xps, acer swift 3, asus zenbook, msi gaming laptops, and then pull out your cheap af heavy plastic laptop and think to yourself:
"Why aren't I rich?"8 -
Unpopular opinion: Fuck laptops
Even with proper care and monthly maintenance, they're still loud as a vacuum cleaner, and hot as a fucking stove. Yes I know it's a bit hotter these days and maybe mine isn't the latest top of the line model, but even my gf's Inspirion 17R (old I know, but she got one unused) tho relatively quiet, heats up as all hell even when it's on a cooling pad as soon as you try to do anything on it.
Maybe I'm alone on this, but I just think that when it comes to laptops, it's go big or go home. My Desktop PC is a relic of the past, but it still purrs like a fucking kitten, even under heavy loads in this weather20 -
My laptop is a useless piece of shit when it isn't plugged. All I want is a slim box that I could bring almost everywhere I go! How long do your laptops' batteries last?26
-
I fuckin love i3wm.
Especially on laptops. Not having to carry mouse around and being it so light, which saves you a lot of battery alongside with cpu/ram makes me wanna cry out of joy.1 -
So, I decided to post this based on @Morningstar's conundrum.
I'm dissatisfied with the laptop market.
Why THE FUCK should I have to buy a gaming laptop with a GTX 1070 or 1080 to get a decent amount of RAM and a fucking great processor?
I don't game. I program. I don't even own a fucking Steam library, for clarification. Never have I ever bought a game on Steam. Disproving the notion that I might have a games library out of the way, I run Linux. Antergos (Arch-based) is my daily driver.
So, in 2017 I went on a laptop hunt. I wanted something with decent specs. Ultimately ended up going with the system76 Galago Pro (which I love the form factor of, it's nice as hell and people recognize the brand for some fucking reason). Matter of fact, one of my profs wanted to know how I accessed our LMS (Blackboard) and I showed him Chromium....his mind was blown: "Ir's not just text!"
That aside, why the fuck are Dell and system76 the only ones with decent portables geared towards developers? I hate the prospect of having to buy some clunky-ass Republic of Gamers piece of shit just to have some sort of decent development machine...
This is a notice to OEMs: yall need to quit making shit hardware and gaming hardware with no mid-range compromise. Shit hardware is defined as the "It runs Excel and that's all the consumer needs" and gaming hardware is "Let's put fucking everything in there - including a decent processor, RAM, and a GTX/Radeon card."
Mid-range that is true - good hardware that handles video editing and other CPU/RAM-intensive tasks and compiling and whatnot but NOT graphics-intensive shit like gaming - is hard to come by. Dell offers my definition of "mid-range" through Sputnik's Ubuntu-powered XPS models and what have you, and system76 has a couple of models that I more or less wish I had money for but don't.
TBH I don't give two fucks about the desktop market. That's a non-issue because I can apply the logic that if you want something done right, do it yourself: I can build a desktop. But not a laptop - at least not in a feasible way.23 -
Last I started my new job, and I got 2 new laptops (one from my job, amd a separate from the client, as I'll be there full time for at least a year). The work one was pricy af imo (P50, ~2500$ ex. VAT), then I got the client one... wtf is wrong with these people, the laptop cost fucking 6000$ (again, ex. VAT).
Now on the personal side I'm cheap as fuck, and the current laptop I use is one that was meant to be scrapped at my old job that I took home to fix. While it's fun getting those laptops, my brain cannot stop thinking "why the fuck do I need 64 gb ram, 2tb storage and 500gb NVME ssd to basically write text?"16 -
Let me just get right down to it.
FUCK YOU Hewlett-fucking-Packard FOR YOUR SHITTY LAPTOPS! Don't you even keep your customer's needs in mind when you design these things? Besides all the bloatware you stuff into the Windows you ship it with, at least make the quality of your shit better. These flimsy screens and loose hinges, I've had to get that shit replaced multiple times in just the past year.
Want to upgrade to an SSD or plug in more RAM? Guess what! I've to tear the whole thing apart! Keyboard, palm rest, all if it! What even happened to just popping a cover at the bottom to swap out the hard drive!? I have to fucking congratulate you, you fucking cunts, for making an easy process as difficult as it can fuckin possibly get. You guys deserve an award for this, preferably presented to you, shoved up your asses.10 -
4 Weeks ago i went to a Electronics store here in germany. My Intention was to look at some smaller laptios (12-14 zoll) to use while im traveling to my work. While i was looking at some Laptops i hear a conversation next to me between a customer and a guy working at the Electronic store.
He says to the customer That the Laptop has a 8 zoll Monitor pointing at the Laptops bottom. My First thought was wtf because i dont knwo any Laptop with an 8 Zoll screen but its still possible. After they done talking i walk to the Laptop and look at the Spot the guy was pointing at. There was a battery sign saying 8h battery duration. says no more :)16 -
So I have attended AWS tech bootcamp yesterday and today.
One thing I notice is everyone either have Mac laptop or other laptops with Win10.
I'm probably the only one with Linux distro. 🤔
I feel special and at the same time, lonely.7 -
I'm currently traveling to Austria for 11 hours, my laptops battery is empty and this godforsaken train has no power source whatsoever.
I have to finish a project
fml5 -
Finished porting clientX to Linux, including dev laptops and desktops. The best part was getting to personally enjoy the moment I got to delete all IIS/Windows integration logic from the .Net core services.

Be current.
Don't teach just languages, teach how to think programmatically
Make laptops more essential than notebooks when you're teaching
Spend more time on trying to solve problems rather than giving the textbook solution -
FUCK.... My laptops LED screen just got a dead px stripe.... And the bad thing is that it is allmost in the middle of the screen.... Oh and it is 60px in length and about 3 px in height!!! And no signs of physical damage to the screen.... so they just died!!!!
And the warranty ended 3 months ago..... Fuck you ASUS!3 -
Conspiracy Theory:
Windows 10 - suspiciously free upgrade and "pirate friendly."
Microsoft - really rolling with the hardware scene lately.
Windows 10 Updates - suspiciously destroyed the hardware in 4 laptops and a desktop I've worked on putting the owners in the market for new Microsoft hardware.
Coincidence?9 -
Makes a joke about my work laptop im getting that we should all invest in some game development so we need some new laptops (we develop prototype apps to validate ideas for startups and i never work on proper projects). I get to work and see this.. Omw im so happy..1
-
I need ideas.
What's the best use for several old, moderately crap laptops (<= 4GB RAM) I have lying around? I'm using one as a minecraft server because 3GB ram is enough and the Pi isn't, but past that, I'm pretty stuck. They all work, mostly, have CD drives and mostly free hard drives.24 -
Non Technical Friend - Bro Apple is the shit!! I'm getting a Macbook.
Me - How's it better than other laptops for you?
Friends - It looks the best .. It's Apple bro!
💢
.. Ok. Enjoy 😐8 -
Those corperate slow laptops which has preinstalled software on it. Especially the antivirus which decides to take up all memory to take a scan on 08:00 when you start up.
Im really close to throwing this piece if shit through the window...6 -
I used to love windows and hated Mac
Then I started using MacBook
Now I don’t like windows at all. I don’t like windows laptops either.
I really didn’t want to be this kind of person who liked Mac and doesn’t like windows laptops
But now I have become this person.....14 -
Our local cyber security team has asked all to remove docker from their laptops, reason they can't track them
Most of our stack is aws fargate with nodejs and java springboot
Developers = wtf ?!!1 -
@students
What laptops are you using for university?
I think about getting the HP Spectre x360 15', so I will also have the ability to take notes with a pen on the device. I guess that will be quite useful because I want to try to use paper as less as possible... Let's see how that will work out.😂
Do you have any other recommendations?16 -
Finally convinced the IT at my University to disable their badly-deployed HTTPS inspection.
So bad even the employee laptops in the domain didn't have the certificate (and the students got it on Google Drive a week later).
I feel great.1 -
I see a lot of people with stickers on their laptops and I was wondering... anyone else removes every sticker from theirs? Even the original ones like intel or nvidia etc? I always found that a laptop looks "cleaner" without any stickers at all...6
-
after moving from a dual monitor setup back to a laptop because of finances, I just realized, I hate managing really large codes on laptops, it sucks!, screen size!, everything !
i cant be the only person who feels this way14 -
It took us 30 years to get to the point where phones and laptops use the same charger but at least we are here. Also fuck calculus.13
-
I do not understand why everyone is so fanatic about stickers. Went to a conference one day and about 90% of all laptops had stickers and ich only wanted to free every of this small beautiful creatures from this ugly pieces of shit.7

So I got tired of dragging my behemoth 17" gaming notebook around to do my day to day web development, so I caved and got a Lenovo Yoga 720. It's very slim and light, though I'm not sure I'm completely happy with it yet.
So I figured I would ask you all here. What laptops do you feel are a decent price and are nice and portable?
Here's my need for specs (because I'm a little picky):
-8th gen i5 or i7
-8GB ram minimum (16GB preferred)
-SSD (don't care about the size, so 128GB min)
-Thin, light and compact (probably 13-14")
-$1000 budget (though I will stretch it a little)
I took a look into System76, but I don't really feel the price matches the hardware (lot of price gouging on the upgrades).32 -
dad: yeah sure , that's why no laptop is working well in this house
all three laptops are older than 4 years and use 5400 rpm hdds and also are full of my parent's stuff. -
Really wish we would see some OLED equipped laptops, we have massive 4K OLED TV's and Tony high resolution smartphone displays, why can't we just get a nice 1080p OLED panel, makes so much sense in a laptop IMO3
-
dear mom,
i know you mean well, but please stop getting me laptops for my birthday. i spend countless hours fixing wifi and graphics card and other drivers because of this.
thank you13 -
It's weird listening to my father "rant" about all the things he has to fix when visiting his parents, some welding, changing tire and switching lightbulbs. When he does the exact same thing with me regarding laptops, routers, smartphones and tablets..2
-
Why computer science student have a stereotype to have a 'gaming' or high-end laptops? my first impression was that. and i think that is stupid. is this only in my country or apply all-over the place?12
-
To be honest, I prefer clean laptops, without any stickers on it, but I love dbrand skins, in some ways, they are stickers, awesome full-laptop-body stickers that are great. Used to have marble and concrete on my XPS, now it's just clean.5
-
WE DID IT BOYS! @dfox @trogus I feel that putting our devRant stickers on our laptops is officially a thing- So I'm prepared to join the dark side 😄
-
My boss keeps touching and poking my colleague's and my laptop screens. Our laptops are both Mac and are not company property. My colleague once told him to stop. He said sorry, but after 5 minutes, he did it again. It's so annoying. Why can't people understand that if it's not a touchscreen, they should keep their manners and not touch it?12
-
I love the mix of people’s setups. There are those with actual monitors set up in a nice curved way, and then there are people with like 10 random laptops set up on their desks like they hoard electronics3
-
My work gave me three laptops because not one of them can access all the resources I need. So I have to balance my workflow around these three machines.9
-
So Docker Desktop only runs on Windows 10 Pro. Unfortunate for Windows 10 Home users that comes installed with their laptops like me. Gotta install the legacy Docker Toolbox26

Macbook keyboard is shit
Especially european variant.
I want to see any person in the world that is braindead enough to think that making short left shift if favour of having abolutely useless button there is good.
This is the most stupid decision that could be ever made.
Not only the symbols used by that button are seldom used, they also are duplicated on they other keyboard keys. But shift is used all the time and must be big enough instead of that shit.9 -
How many computers do you have in your room (currently in use or old ones)?
Mine are,
2 Desktops
3 Laptops
And one RaspPi21 -
Both my laptops are overheating, Codeblocks keeps crashing, and I'm too emotional over the latest Samurai Jack.
-
Ebay is great to find cheap laptops. However auctions always give me a false sense of happiness when no one bids higher than I do for 4 days and then 15 mins before it has to end I get outbid by 10 people?!?!?
Anyway bought a used Thinkpad x200 for 25 bucks, added in an SSD. Sweet.2 -
One of my laptops has ctrl, fn, win, alt on bottom keyboard row on the left while the other has fn, ctrl, win, alt. Arrrrgh. I know I can remap, but why there could not be one standard?3
-
So... The scrapyard man who I gave my scrap gave me this beauties he had there for years...
Anyone knows how I can test the screens and maybe build a desktop screen out of them?17 -
I wish laptops were more easily modifiable. Ram upgrade? Gpu upgrade? 10-GBit ethernet? Maybe I should just buy a desktop...3

MSI GV series gaming laptop

Do I see standard li-ion batteries? Can it be replaced by ourselves?
If yes, fantastic, wish more manufacturers support this, especially for workstation / development laptops.18 -
Today we were told that management decided that apart from software development we are also responsible for internal IT support, such as helping business with installing programs on their laptops. Yay!2
-
I'm fucking mad
So, we uses 2 laptops por person on my team, one is ours (I use my own) and the other is the client's fucked up windows 7 laptop.
We can only access their environments with this fucked laptops, which needs a VPN software and McAfee.
So, I'm in a fucking loop, where McAfee doesn't update and the VPN can't connect because of it.
I'm in lunch time already and still did nothing because of this piece of shit1 -
Users running Linux on laptops with Intel processors should avoid Linux Kernel 5.19.12 due to an error that might physically harm the display. Fortunately, kernel 5.19.13 has already fixed the issue. Versions 6.0 and 6.1 have also begun rolling out with many significant changes.4

This week in my school: No access to computers until next week. Magnificent. We don't work with laptops until the 11th grade so... fuck2
-
And so it happened.
My company installed app-operated locks in the office.
Today the internet went down during the night and nobody could get in to even get their laptops to work from home :))))
Brilliant move and there's certainly not been anybody who could have predicted that.3 -
i love chromebooks, but i wish they built them with more storage. i know that everything by google is based on the cloud and shit so most chromebooks only have like 4gb of storage but if there was a chromebook with 256gb id be in heaven. does anyone else think chromebooks look really nice compared to other laptops?4

Two new Laptops arrived at our office today. Tried to install Manjaro on a USB with different Windows Tools because Windows Laptop was the easiest to access. Nothing Fucking worked!
Searched and found a Linux laptop.
Used dd
First try success
dd is love ♥️3 -
I use a stand on of of my laptops, so the thing is normally inclined.
Today i just decided to lay it flad and noticed a strange purring sound coming from one of the fans.
I just thought it was funny since I don't recall of a time in which the laptop was not flat3 -
Not sure if this is progress or what... But the people who asked me to fix their laptops or build their website now want me to help them out in starting their very own crypto currency.7
-
some students aren't treating their school laptops well at all, today i had a student asking us if he would get a replacement if he "accidentally" gave it a little bath in acid :/5
-
My colleagues work on our project files with unstable software for hours on end without saving their progress. Honestly, the balls on them. One of them just closed their Laptops to put it in energy saving mode without saving 2h of progress. Why are you doing this to me?3
-
How do I avoid carpal tunnel? Simple: my school bag (it's a laptop bag) usually has like 3 laptops in it plus miscellany tools and such, making it over 100 pounds usually. I also don't use a strap, so it's hand-hold only. It also helps train grip strength!4
-
Y'all, what do people here think of manjaro? What are the common issues of it these days? How does it work on personal laptops?6
-
Well fuck. This laptop was nice, then the hinges decided to remove themselves from the mount points. Also a metal side rail mananaged break as well...
Anyone have good suggestions for laptops? Prefer machines with a distro of Linux on it, but not afraid to install8 -
Dell et al should start selling pre-stickered laptops so execs could buy that "dev cred" look.
There's probably a science to producing a look that doesn't make you look like someone's mum at a cool party.
What sticker placement approach do people use?2 -
Fast quitz:
1. Desktops or Laptops?
2. Windows or Linux?
3. Coke or Pepsi?
4. Instant coffee or regular coffee?
5. Light theme or dark theme?
6. Tabs or spaces?
Let's the hell begin! 😈30 -
Did anyone else grow up using shitty laptops and cheap hard disks with just not enough space and now that they are adulting and have access to money, have this random, uncontrollable urge to keep buying more SSD's even though they already have more than they'll ever need or is it just me?11
-
What do you guys think about Ubuntu on windows 10, any first impressions?
I wanna try it out coz my new Laptop comes pre installed with 10 and installing Ubuntu is kinda very problematic in high end laptops according to a little research I did.12 -
So finally i am taking summer vacation. Vacation will start tomorrow and will end in 1st week of May. I am gonna miss my companion (my laptops and accessories 😂) but yeah, they know also i was in dire need of this.
😂😂😂5 -
Lenovo T series laptops are amazing. I've purchased one in 2010, it was too good to be true and used for 5-6 years, forgot about it after I upgraded to Mac. Didn't touch for ~2.5 years, turned on today for my nephew. It is still working like charm, even the battery holds charge for 2hours, I'm impressed 👍12
-
Gotta love temporary laptops while waiting for your actual device. I literally have to press letter "T" like playing Tekken in the arcade.5
-
I'm surprised how well Dell laptops are made. I'm using 2011 Dell Latitude E6320 and it really works like more modern models. Of course it would be lovely if I had new XPS 15, but it's really not bad for this budget. It just needs SSD drive and it's ready to roll.8

One thing I hate about laptops is touchpads. Another thing I hate about laptops is the point stick and its buttons. Fortunately, these can both be disabled, but Dell's solution for this has some usability issues. What can't be disabled though is the third thing I hate about laptops: The keyboard. Sure, it is made small to give the laptop nifty and portable outer dimensions. Yet, there is like an inch border used for nothing on each side of the keyboard, and if you have to carry along an external keyboard how portable is that?10

A friend of me said that intel Pentium and i3 is the same, that all laptops with intel`s logo have the same processor, you just have to view the info. of yours...2

I have 2 laptops. I use 1 for coding and 1 for gaming.
For some reason, the coding laptop keeps giving BSOD once in a while, but the other one never gave BSOD.
Believe me, I've had it longer (the gaming one), don't shut it down or restart often and they both run the exact same windows build versions! 🙄🙄4 -

My laptop now includes a DevRant sticker!
If you also have stickers on your laptop I would love to see them. Share photos of your laptops in the comments! :-)8 -
Getting a new laptop is exhausting if you haven't been keeping up with the technology. I have purchased three laptops in the last two weeks returning the first two after spending 10 + hours each installing updates and software just to find out they didn't work for what I needed.1

Does anyone here have experience with FreeBSD as a desktop/laptop OS? I want to install it on my laptop.6

I find it amusingly curious when people have laptops and carry a usb/wireless mouse along.

I don't like laptops, it just doesn't feel the same, too small, keyboard is meh I dunno... I like when the screen is in eye level but keyboard is lower.

Install Instagram, Facebook.
Utter words like "Gaming Laptop" "Predator" "MSI" while screen being locked.
Voila, you get an ad.
PS: I swear I didn't search for any MSI or gaming laptops in google or even typed those words in recent past.5 -
There's seriously a girl here following DAE (Game development) with one of them fancy tiny macbooks. Yes the one without escape. I wish her good luck and congratulations on being rich and a retard who ignores school advice on laptops4

I have a few old laptops laying around. I was thinking to repurpose them for novel, and/or 'smart', projects. Any ideas or tips?8

I'm going to hate all laptops. I tried to install linux and I have problem in instalation. Still have well working win, but im sick and tired with not working shit. It's funny, because few months ago i had win and linux xD
It's time to but New one? XD2 -
I'm running a spin-off and the team is still small. So, I was wondering how a minimal backup system should be. I do not mean to use github, that we already use, I am concerned about the HD of our servers and laptops. Thanks in advance!3

Is it sort of silly to work remote, but from a different place (library, shop, mall)?
I've had one remote job in the past, but start another tomorrow and I'm hoping to try to work from different places.

Hi everyone,
I have a question, what should learn if I want to make products for example like headphones or laptops and stuff like that. Till now ive only been programming and making pc games. And where could I learn it? Thanks!9 -
So, this week. Two broken laptops decided to boot again. They didn't give signal at all anymore. I did try to do disconnect a few hours of power before I decided they're dead. Now months later, bam, both boot. I'm happy as F, but now the chromecast died. Ofcourse I'll try several days without power now.
Thanks for listening23 -
I hate Chrome Books/ ChromeOS. I was recently told that at my job we would be using Chrome Books and I am not excited, chrome os is essentially a mobile software on a real computer, the only redeeming factor is the Linux support in the developer betas.
Chrome books suck.5 -
It needs to be outright illegal for laptops to have fewer than four USB ports.
If the purpose of law is to improve the quality of life, why not outlaw the time-consuming annoyance of laptops with few USB ports?
The purpose of laptops is portable computing. Depending on a USB hub makes it less portable.
If it was legally mandatory for laptops to have at least four USB ports, there would be no more competitive disadvantage for laptop vendors sacrificing unimportant slimness for important practicality.
And to the very few people who consider slim design more important than USB ports and who are going to whine online about the extra 3 millimetres of thickness: Sorry, life is unfair. Your preferences don't matter. Practicality is the purpose of computers. You are the reason laptops are ruined for the rest of us. Get lost.29 -
Acer vs MSI Laptops.
Five years ago I bought an acer aspire vn7-591 laptop in Redcoon. It was the expensive laptop I bought ever in those days. My experience at the beginning was really bad because the battery laptop crashed after few months and the screen had some vague/dead pixels, but the worst was the imminent bankruptcy of Redcoon. So I couldn't use the warranty. Anyway, It didn't bother so much I have been enjoying this laptop and still doing it. However, last year the screen put me on alert since it started to fail with vertical bars and color changes.
It was time to buy a new computer and due to the problems with some of the components, I've decided to buy a laptop from a company with a better reputation than Acer in aspects as the reliability of the components.
My choice was a Msi Prestige 15 because of the thunderbolts, since the rest of specs are 'more or less similar', although it has more updated hardware, it is lighter, battery holds up to 4-5 hours etc... But... It is really noisy compared to my Acer computer. 2 CPU fans are around 3000 rpm in idle state... Acer seems to be working without using the fans if you are doing intensive work. I google it as I thought it was a factory problem, but it seems to be not a malfunctioning... In fact I found other users complaining about the same and the community proposed to reduce the fan speed through software.
Right now I have both laptops working and since the new boy is in house, Acer is working flawlessly. I am preparing the Acer for my girlfriend as a gift, otherwise it is a pitty to shut it down and store it in a wardrobe.
So, this is my impression about ACER and MSI. I m still experiencing with the new laptop, but I find weird things like the fan speed or how hot it gets in idle despite it uses a new generation of intel i7 cpu with lower consumption... I should monitor the power consumption...8 -
INFO/WARNING: Some HP audio drivers for certain HP laptops have "integrated keyloggers" enabled. The audio driver would log your keystrokes to look for special keys and saves them to a public folder on your PC (Windows).
I really wonder what kind of total retards decide to implenent features in this way.

Why the hell laptops do not have wireless charging at this point? Would rant about phones, but I’ve heard that Apple will release iPhone 13 with wireless only, so that’s great42

Anyone here uses System76 laptops? How was your experience with the company and the product? I'm asking about the Galago Pro specifically but even general information would be nice, thanks.4

Avoid Lenovo laptops at all costs.
Our fleet of Lenovo laptops fault so often for such simple manufacturing/design defects that I have to wonder how Lenovo make any profit considering the amount of warranty claims we make.7 -
Why do you think restarting the device mostly works? Be it phones, laptops or routers.. No real answers pls.. Let see how much creativity we can get 😅4

Kudos to Fedora for the 32 workstation release. It works as advertised on Lenovo laptops (even the new ones) OOTB, no issues.
Caveats: It's Wayland with Nvidia graphics disabled and has no fingerprint support, but that goes with the territory. Still an arch adherent personally, but it makes the office engineer laptop story significantly easier. -
It's 2022 and people still believe USB sticks and external card readers are a replacement for memory card slots.
They're not. SD cards have a standardized form factor and do not protrude from memory card slots, but external card readers and USB sticks do.
Just like smartphones, laptops are increasingly ditching the SD card slot or replacing it with microSD, which has less capacity, lower life expectancy and data retention span due to smaller memory transistors, worse handling, and no write-protection switch.
Not only should full-sized SD cards be brought back to laptops, but also brought to smartphones. There might soon be 2 TB SD cards, meaning not one second of worrying about running out of space for years. That would be wonderful.22 -
My job college exam.
It's my favourite because it was a fucking joke sheet.
They allowed us to use all our previously gained knowledge which we had stored on our laptops.
Needless to say the exam was over in about an hour.1 -
It is always great when I download a major release of a software I love and it only gets better.
1Password new version is exactly that. It took a great product and made it better integrated with the laptops I use every day.
Not really ranting... but I wish this happened more often. -
Ended up dong an internship for my school (not really internship, more along the lines of formal volunteering, but whatever) helping set up laptops for a statewide standardized assessment.
I made a program to log the machine's identifying info (Serial, MAC addresses, etc), renames it, joins it to the school's Active Directory, and takes notes on machines, which gets dumped into a csv file.
Made the classic rookie mistake of backing things up occasionally, but not often enough. Accidentally nuked the flash drive with the data on it, and spent a good while learning data recovery and how grep works.
Lesson Learned? Back up frequently and back up everything -
Best budget laptop for development?
(Or at least under $999 USD)
Would like:
- Web Development without lag.
- Be able to run Visual Studio without lag.
- Light, I don’t want to carry around a bricc (Ultraportable any good?).
- Thunderbolt 3 Support? (would like to attach a decent external GPU enclosure for home gaming every now and then).
Or basically something I’ll get my moneys worth and isn’t shit.
All preferences and suggestions are welcomed, just don’t be a douche about it 😘❤️8 -
Best laptops for mobile devs? I personally love my Surface Pro 2 its been a little workhorse and does everything I need besides booting from a flash drive. But I wanna know the communities favorite laptop.9

Upgraded the memory, replaced the DVD drive with another ssd, and even changed the keyboard to a backlit one on this laptop. Total time spent for all this? 2, count 'em, 2 freaking minutes. Love ThinkPads4

I've got 2 questions.
1. Are there any laptops better than a maxed out Dell XPS 15 for a similar price?
2. Once I buy my new laptop I want to experiment with Linux (never used it before). Is there some really good tutorial out there to help me get it working and figure out how it works and what the best way to use it is?4 -
On a business trip. I brought my work laptop and my personal laptop with me. Because I am smart. But a lot of my coworkers only bring their work laptops. So I guess I am basically wondering how much porn has tainted the work laptops. Especially since they will auction them off around once a year. To be clear I am not wondering about the software taint.2

Working two hours on this FFS. Three the same laptops:
- Two USB sticks of different brands working on two of the laptops. One doesn't work.
- BIOS versions: the working two are from 2018 and 2020. The not working one is from 2022.
- BIOS settings: 99% the same, especially where matters. Literally went trough every menu.
- I thought, maybe the 'new' 2022 BIOS has a buggy - so maybe update BIOS? Everything only for windows on Lenovo website.
I installed xubuntu on it before. All laptops say "cant find /boot" but on two of them it's not a problem and they run the live USB stick with option to installii. Since I installed it before, the BIOS version is probably not the issue.
If i close my eyes i see swastika's.
Detail: the not working laptop is the one that i wrote the xubuntu iso to /dev/sda (what was the hard drive, see a few rants ago). For some reason, it aggresively boots from that one. I do see my USB stick working (very busy flashing light). Is it maybe possible that it mounts my HD as installation cdrom? The HD contains those files.
Anyone tips?2 -
Our laptops aren’t connecting to the internet. The Apple TV won’t stream anything but Netflix. Nothing else is working properly... but we watched an entire movie on Netflix without a hiccup...

My new job is giving me a budget for getting a new laptop, looking for some recommendations on good programmer brands, somewhere in the neighborhood of $1800-$2000 USD (not including tax/shipping). I'm looking at the Dell XPS 15, beautiful screen but poor quality reviews. Also, looking at ASUS Zenbook line. Any thoughts on those brands? Any other brands I should look at? I need to run Windows natively, so MBP is out.14

Hey if your company refreshing / retiring laptops for the latest greatest - you might want to think about using for disaster recovery. Store them in another location or home. Push out updated image automatically. Recently saved a company 400k recurring expense with this strategy.

There are two kinds of people in the world:
Type A: This has good built quality, is pretty upgradable, has reasonable specs and enough ports and doesn't break my bank. This is the right choice.
Type B: I might have to live on canned food for a while but this is the machine for professionals and I'm in the path of being a professional. Also, it just looks so good. It just feels right to buy this.3 -
What is the best laptop for development?
Especially if you work a lot with virtualization, containers, the cloud, and a lot of systems programming. And you like to simulate a lot of distributed environments on locally?3 -

I use my phone as webcam. It’s higher quality, and it allows me to have my laptop’s cam taped over.
Unfortunately, not every one of us can organize their life in a way that doesn’t require using a webcam. Sometimes, you need one.

Hey, is there a site where i can search laptops from every manufacturer, not just a shop specific one, where they only list the ones they sell?
Or alternatively, is there a 14" amd ultra-ish book that is not acer asus or lenovo?5 -
If we don't count gaming there are 2 different categories of laptops; consumer and business.
Business laptops are better quality and more durable than consumer laptops. That's just a fact. Therefore the extra cost.
Now my question: Does Microsoft 'favor' business laptops in terms of Windows 10 and Windows 10 updates?
Because I have a business model laptop and since the beginning Windows 10 worked flawless and still does and I never had any problems despite running mutiple programs and services.
While some of my friends have consumer laptops and they are complaning day in day out about their Windows is always updating and programs always crashing.
So does Microsoft 'favor' business models in terms of Windows 10 updates and stability or am I just lucky?3 -

I don't like contributing to e-waste. I also don't buy the "extended warranties" because most things I just repair myself.
My Dell died just short of two years. It is my work laptop, so I replaced it with a Framework, but I also wanted to fix the Dell. This was the process:
https://battlepenguin.com/technolog...
TL;DR ...I still failed. Hopefully the eBayed parts will make themselves into a refurb. After putting together a Framework, I can't see myself using another laptop brand ever. I hope it holds up.3 -

Why the hell do you guys make such weak laptops?5 -

Okay this is gonna sound weird just hear me out.
I feel a massive difference when programming on a desktop compared to my laptop.

If you had to evacuate your office due to a fire without your laptop and the office was destroyed could you continue to work? Do you have offsite recovery laptops?
Developers usually have flexibility where they can work from but sometimes do not have backup machines available and configured.
As a side question - would your other critical processes - accounting, HR, sales be able to continue to keep your business going in a disaster - or would they be like deer in headlights?6 -
What laptop requirements do you guys have for laptops for use when developing? I need to replace my 7 year old well. Looking at a dell cos 13 with an i5-7200u, 128 gb SSD and 8gb of RAM. What do you guys think?7

With all the CES nonsense, wouldn't you love it if they didn't make shit smaller and thinner and actually made it the same size as 5 yrs ago. While upgrading battery life and cooling... I used to be able to connect my Windows laptops to any TV with HDMI and duplicate the screen for presentations, watching movies, etc. But since about 6 months ago I can’t get ANY TVs to work with ANY Windows laptops. Everything I’m reading says it’s either out of date drivers (nope) or something to do with a crap update from MS. I’m going with the latter. It can’t be coincidence that ALL my updated machines suddenly can’t do this basic function.2

Having some issues with my laptop seizing up in graphical linux desktop environments, probably due to some peripheral power management. I saw there was a bios setting for "make linux work" but I couldn't find mention of it in the manual (why is this usually so hard to find, anyway?), so I googled a bit before I messed with it.
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/...
Worst case I guess I'd just reset the bios, but it always blows my mind seeing issues like these go seemingly unaddressed. That's a 12 page discussion from 2018 where you brick your laptop - a fairly high end one at that - by flipping a bool and the latest response is "Same issue here".
Is it just PR practice to not acknowledge these things or is it likely that they are legitimately unaware? Does it not get escalated properly or do they reckon there's not enough benefit to address it?
Whatever the case, my faith in Lenovo is certainly starting to show cracks. I used to see it as the "correct" laptop brand, but nowadays I'm equally iffy about all of them.3 -

HP
I really like their laptops, or i used to. My HP lappy has a realtek WiFi card and realtek doesn't provide support for Linux. I think I also hate realtek. Furthermore, my laptop starts throttling because of dust being collected. Some people that I know have older Dell laptops that work better than mine1 -
Tried to run ollama with a small model on a laptop that's like 10 years old and use that inside vs code. Weak CPU, GPU not to mention. I didn't really expect it to work. I was still a bit disappointed, though as expected. It was crying for help.
Are there any laptops powerful enough?4 -

Currently on the market for a new laptop for work.
I'm thinking of Asus Vivobook 15 with 12GB ram and 256 GB SSD config. I don't trust Windows and it's performance on HDD. Since I'm coming from Macbook, I would really hate having to wait about 5 mins for system to be usable after boot up.
Slightly tempted to spend more money and go for a gaming laptop for that I can play Spintires sometimes. But not sure if it's a good idea to have a gaming config laptop for work.
It fucking sucks that there is not much selection of laptops or even let you try demo of laptops that are put for display in the shops here.2 -
Any recommendations for a portable laptop (~1.5 kg) with good battery life(6:8 hrs) , great display and with 8th gen i5 or i7 costs less than 1k $?3

I know this is not the place to be asking questions but does anyone know about a ftp/sftp client that syncs your bookmarked servers with some cloud solution (e.g. Dropbox, ...)?
This would be really nice to have for teams/people with multiple laptops.4 -
Are there any .NET devs here who use MacBooks as their main dev machine who can share some feedback? I really like the design of the Mac but I'm not sure whether I will be very productive on it. Other laptops I'm considering are the Razer Blade, Dell XPS or HP Spectre x3603

Anybody know anything about this laptop:

I want to upgrade my current rig and want it to be an epic update. However, I found one review and it had a hardware failure.
Is there a better place to buy laptops that have power (GPU, CPU), but don't die from overheating?8 -
Can anyone recommend a docking station with multiple hdmi and/or display port ports für Linux laptops?2

I'm gonna need a laptop, and the one I have is too large for my liking. I am just curious as to whether or not I should get a windows laptop and install Ubuntu, or take the extra time to find one with Ubuntu already? Do you guys have any suggestions for laptops around $500?3

Why does every single Ultrabook with good price to performance ratio come with a fucking numpad? I despise numpads on laptops, they're uncomfortable as fuck. I really wanted a new laptop but I guess I'll have to wait.6

There seems to be a lot of 10 series laptops with 6th gen processors, but not many 10 series laptops with 7th gen processors. It'd be nice to have refreshed hardware in one machine1
