Displays: Glossy screens everywhere. "Hurr durr it has better colors". Idgaf what colors it has, when the only thing I can see is the wall behind me and my own reflection. Make it matte or get it out.
Touchpads: Bring back mechanical buttons. Haptic feedback dying with touchscreens/surfaces is a tragedy. "But we can have bigger touchpad area without buttons" ...why? the goal shouldn't be 1:1 touchpad vs. display ratio. It ain't a bloody tablet.
Docking stations: Some bright fucker figured out that they can utilize USB C. That thing keeps falling out with slightest laptop movement disconnecting all peripherals (guess why microUSB had those small hooks?). Also it doesn't have sufficient throughput, so the 5 years old dock can feed 3 full HD monitors just fine and the new one can't.
Keyboards: Personally I hate chiclet. And it's everywhere, because "apple has it so we must too". But the thing I hate even more is retardation of the arrow keys (up and down merged into size of one key), missing dedicated Home/End/PgDwn/PgUp buttons and somebody deciding the F keys are not needed and started replacing them with some multimedia bullshit.

My overall feeling is that this happens when you give the market to designers and customer demand. You end up with eye candy and useless fancy gadgets, with lowered ergonomy and worse features than previous generations of the same hardware. My laptop dying is my daily nightmare as I have no idea with what on the current market I would replace it.

Unpopular opinion: Fuck laptops

Even with proper care and monthly maintenance, they're still loud as a vacuum cleaner, and hot as a fucking stove. Yes I know it's a bit hotter these days and maybe mine isn't the latest top of the line model, but even my gf's Inspirion 17R (old I know, but she got one unused) tho relatively quiet, heats up as all hell even when it's on a cooling pad as soon as you try to do anything on it.
Maybe I'm alone on this, but I just think that when it comes to laptops, it's go big or go home. My Desktop PC is a relic of the past, but it still purrs like a fucking kitten, even under heavy loads in this weather

So a guy at work saw our laptops running kali linux, and wanted the "Installer" for it..

So, I decided to post this based on @Morningstar's conundrum.

I'm dissatisfied with the laptop market.

Why THE FUCK should I have to buy a gaming laptop with a GTX 1070 or 1080 to get a decent amount of RAM and a fucking great processor?

I don't game. I program. I don't even own a fucking Steam library, for clarification. Never have I ever bought a game on Steam. Disproving the notion that I might have a games library out of the way, I run Linux. Antergos (Arch-based) is my daily driver.

So, in 2017 I went on a laptop hunt. I wanted something with decent specs. Ultimately ended up going with the system76 Galago Pro (which I love the form factor of, it's nice as hell and people recognize the brand for some fucking reason). Matter of fact, one of my profs wanted to know how I accessed our LMS (Blackboard) and I showed him Chromium....his mind was blown: "Ir's not just text!"

That aside, why the fuck are Dell and system76 the only ones with decent portables geared towards developers? I hate the prospect of having to buy some clunky-ass Republic of Gamers piece of shit just to have some sort of decent development machine...

This is a notice to OEMs: yall need to quit making shit hardware and gaming hardware with no mid-range compromise. Shit hardware is defined as the "It runs Excel and that's all the consumer needs" and gaming hardware is "Let's put fucking everything in there - including a decent processor, RAM, and a GTX/Radeon card."

Mid-range that is true - good hardware that handles video editing and other CPU/RAM-intensive tasks and compiling and whatnot but NOT graphics-intensive shit like gaming - is hard to come by. Dell offers my definition of "mid-range" through Sputnik's Ubuntu-powered XPS models and what have you, and system76 has a couple of models that I more or less wish I had money for but don't.

TBH I don't give two fucks about the desktop market. That's a non-issue because I can apply the logic that if you want something done right, do it yourself: I can build a desktop. But not a laptop - at least not in a feasible way.

Last I started my new job, and I got 2 new laptops (one from my job, amd a separate from the client, as I'll be there full time for at least a year). The work one was pricy af imo (P50, ~2500$ ex. VAT), then I got the client one... wtf is wrong with these people, the laptop cost fucking 6000$ (again, ex. VAT).

Now on the personal side I'm cheap as fuck, and the current laptop I use is one that was meant to be scrapped at my old job that I took home to fix. While it's fun getting those laptops, my brain cannot stop thinking "why the fuck do I need 64 gb ram, 2tb storage and 500gb NVME ssd to basically write text?"

Let me just get right down to it.

Besides all the bloatware you stuff into the Windows you ship it with, at least make the quality of your shit better. Want to upgrade to an SSD or plug in more RAM? Guess what! I've to tear the whole thing apart! Keyboard, palm rest, all if it! What even happened to just popping a cover at the bottom to swap out the hard drive!? 4 Weeks ago i went to a Electronics store here in germany. My Intention was to look at some smaller laptios (12-14 zoll) to use while im traveling to my work. While i was looking at some Laptops i hear a conversation next to me between a customer and a guy working at the Electronic store.
He says to the customer That the Laptop has a 8 zoll Monitor pointing at the Laptops bottom. My First thought was wtf because i dont knwo any Laptop with an 8 Zoll screen but its still possible. After they done talking i walk to the Laptop and look at the Spot the guy was pointing at. There was a battery sign saying 8h battery duration. says no more :)

So I have attended AWS tech bootcamp yesterday and today.

So I got tired of dragging my behemoth 17" gaming notebook around to do my day to day web development, so I caved and got a Lenovo Yoga 720. It's very slim and light, though I'm not sure I'm completely happy with it yet.

So I figured I would ask you all here. What laptops do you feel are a decent price and are nice and portable?

Here's my need for specs (because I'm a little picky):

-8th gen i5 or i7
-8GB ram minimum (16GB preferred)
-SSD (don't care about the size, so 128GB min)
-Thin, light and compact (probably 13-14")
-$1000 budget (though I will stretch it a little)

I took a look into System76, but I don't really feel the price matches the hardware (lot of price gouging on the upgrades).

To be honest, I prefer clean laptops, without any stickers on it, but I love dbrand skins, in some ways, they are stickers, awesome full-laptop-body stickers that are great. Used to have marble and concrete on my XPS, now it's just clean.

My boss keeps touching and poking my colleague's and my laptop screens. Our laptops are both Mac and are not company property. My colleague once told him to stop. He said sorry, but after 5 minutes, he did it again. It's so annoying. Why can't people understand that if it's not a touchscreen, they should keep their manners and not touch it?

I love the mix of people’s setups. There are those with actual monitors set up in a nice curved way, and then there are people with like 10 random laptops set up on their desks like they hoard electronics

My work gave me three laptops because not one of them can access all the resources I need. So I have to balance my workflow around these three machines.

So Docker Desktop only runs on Windows 10 Pro. Unfortunate for Windows 10 Home users that comes installed with their laptops like me. Gotta install the legacy Docker Toolbox

Users running Linux on laptops with Intel processors should avoid Linux Kernel 5.19.12 due to an error that might physically harm the display. Fortunately, kernel 5.19.13 has already fixed the issue. Versions 6.0 and 6.1 have also begun rolling out with many significant changes.

How do I avoid carpal tunnel? Simple: my school bag (it's a laptop bag) usually has like 3 laptops in it plus miscellany tools and such, making it over 100 pounds usually. I also don't use a strap, so it's hand-hold only. It also helps train grip strength!

Lenovo T series laptops are amazing. I've purchased one in 2010, it was too good to be true and used for 5-6 years, forgot about it after I upgraded to Mac. Didn't touch for ~2.5 years, turned on today for my nephew. It is still working like charm, even the battery holds charge for 2hours, I'm impressed 👍

I'm surprised how well Dell laptops are made. I'm using 2011 Dell Latitude E6320 and it really works like more modern models. Of course it would be lovely if I had new XPS 15, but it's really not bad for this budget. It just needs SSD drive and it's ready to roll.

One thing I hate about laptops is touchpads. Another thing I hate about laptops is the point stick and its buttons. Fortunately, these can both be disabled, but Dell's solution for this has some usability issues. What can't be disabled though is the third thing I hate about laptops: The keyboard. Sure, it is made small to give the laptop nifty and portable outer dimensions. Yet, there is like an inch border used for nothing on each side of the keyboard, and if you have to carry along an external keyboard how portable is that?

A friend of me said that intel Pentium and i3 is the same, that all laptops with intel`s logo have the same processor, you just have to view the info. of yours...

I have 2 laptops. I use 1 for coding and 1 for gaming.

For some reason, the coding laptop keeps giving BSOD once in a while, but the other one never gave BSOD.

Believe me, I've had it longer (the gaming one), don't shut it down or restart often and they both run the exact same windows build versions! 🙄🙄

Getting a new laptop is exhausting if you haven't been keeping up with the technology. I have purchased three laptops in the last two weeks returning the first two after spending 10 + hours each installing updates and software just to find out they didn't work for what I needed.

So, this week. Two broken laptops decided to boot again. They didn't give signal at all anymore. I did try to do disconnect a few hours of power before I decided they're dead. Now months later, bam, both boot. I'm happy as F, but now the chromecast died. Ofcourse I'll try several days without power now.

I hate Chrome Books/ ChromeOS. I was recently told that at my job we would be using Chrome Books and I am not excited, chrome os is essentially a mobile software on a real computer, the only redeeming factor is the Linux support in the developer betas.

Chrome books suck.

It needs to be outright illegal for laptops to have fewer than four USB ports.

If the purpose of law is to improve the quality of life, why not outlaw the time-consuming annoyance of laptops with few USB ports?

The purpose of laptops is portable computing. Depending on a USB hub makes it less portable.

If it was legally mandatory for laptops to have at least four USB ports, there would be no more competitive disadvantage for laptop vendors sacrificing unimportant slimness for important practicality.

And to the very few people who consider slim design more important than USB ports and who are going to whine online about the extra 3 millimetres of thickness: Sorry, life is unfair. Your preferences don't matter. Practicality is the purpose of computers. You are the reason laptops are ruined for the rest of us. Get lost.

Acer vs MSI Laptops.

Five years ago I bought an acer aspire vn7-591 laptop in Redcoon. It was the expensive laptop I bought ever in those days. My experience at the beginning was really bad because the battery laptop crashed after few months and the screen had some vague/dead pixels, but the worst was the imminent bankruptcy of Redcoon. So I couldn't use the warranty. Anyway, It didn't bother so much I have been enjoying this laptop and still doing it. However, last year the screen put me on alert since it started to fail with vertical bars and color changes.
It was time to buy a new computer and due to the problems with some of the components, I've decided to buy a laptop from a company with a better reputation than Acer in aspects as the reliability of the components.
My choice was a Msi Prestige 15 because of the thunderbolts, since the rest of specs are 'more or less similar', although it has more updated hardware, it is lighter, battery holds up to 4-5 hours etc... But... It is really noisy compared to my Acer computer. 2 CPU fans are around 3000 rpm in idle state... Acer seems to be working without using the fans if you are doing intensive work. I google it as I thought it was a factory problem, but it seems to be not a malfunctioning... In fact I found other users complaining about the same and the community proposed to reduce the fan speed through software.
Right now I have both laptops working and since the new boy is in house, Acer is working flawlessly. I am preparing the Acer for my girlfriend as a gift, otherwise it is a pitty to shut it down and store it in a wardrobe.
So, this is my impression about ACER and MSI. I m still experiencing with the new laptop, but I find weird things like the fan speed or how hot it gets in idle despite it uses a new generation of intel i7 cpu with lower consumption... I should monitor the power consumption...

Our fleet of Lenovo laptops fault so often for such simple manufacturing/design defects that I have to wonder how Lenovo make any profit considering the amount of warranty claims we make.

Kudos to Fedora for the 32 workstation release. It works as advertised on Lenovo laptops (even the new ones) OOTB, no issues.

Caveats: It's Wayland with Nvidia graphics disabled and has no fingerprint support, but that goes with the territory. Still an arch adherent personally, but it makes the office engineer laptop story significantly easier.

It's 2022 and people still believe USB sticks and external card readers are a replacement for memory card slots.

They're not. SD cards have a standardized form factor and do not protrude from memory card slots, but external card readers and USB sticks do.

Just like smartphones, laptops are increasingly ditching the SD card slot or replacing it with microSD, which has less capacity, lower life expectancy and data retention span due to smaller memory transistors, worse handling, and no write-protection switch.

Not only should full-sized SD cards be brought back to laptops, but also brought to smartphones. There might soon be 2 TB SD cards, meaning not one second of worrying about running out of space for years. That would be wonderful.

My job college exam.
It's my favourite because it was a fucking joke sheet.

They allowed us to use all our previously gained knowledge which we had stored on our laptops.

Needless to say the exam was over in about an hour.

It is always great when I download a major release of a software I love and it only gets better.

1Password new version is exactly that. It took a great product and made it better integrated with the laptops I use every day.

Not really ranting... but I wish this happened more often.

Ended up dong an internship for my school (not really internship, more along the lines of formal volunteering, but whatever) helping set up laptops for a statewide standardized assessment.

I made a program to log the machine's identifying info (Serial, MAC addresses, etc), renames it, joins it to the school's Active Directory, and takes notes on machines, which gets dumped into a csv file.

Made the classic rookie mistake of backing things up occasionally, but not often enough. Accidentally nuked the flash drive with the data on it, and spent a good while learning data recovery and how grep works.

Lesson Learned? Back up frequently and back up everything

Best budget laptop for development?

(Or at least under $999 USD)

Would like:
- Web Development without lag.
- Be able to run Visual Studio without lag.
- Light, I don’t want to carry around a bricc (Ultraportable any good?).
- Thunderbolt 3 Support? (would like to attach a decent external GPU enclosure for home gaming every now and then).

Best laptops for mobile devs? I personally love my Surface Pro 2 its been a little workhorse and does everything I need besides booting from a flash drive. But I wanna know the communities favorite laptop.

2. Once I buy my new laptop I want to experiment with Linux (never used it before). Is there some really good tutorial out there to help me get it working and figure out how it works and what the best way to use it is?

On a business trip. I brought my work laptop and my personal laptop with me. Because I am smart. But a lot of my coworkers only bring their work laptops. So I guess I am basically wondering how much porn has tainted the work laptops. Especially since they will auction them off around once a year. To be clear I am not wondering about the software taint.

Working two hours on this FFS. Three the same laptops:
- Two USB sticks of different brands working on two of the laptops. One doesn't work.
- BIOS versions: the working two are from 2018 and 2020. The not working one is from 2022.
- BIOS settings: 99% the same, especially where matters. Literally went trough every menu.
- I thought, maybe the 'new' 2022 BIOS has a buggy - so maybe update BIOS? Everything only for windows on Lenovo website.

I installed xubuntu on it before. All laptops say "cant find /boot" but on two of them it's not a problem and they run the live USB stick with option to installii. Since I installed it before, the BIOS version is probably not the issue.

If i close my eyes i see swastika's.

Detail: the not working laptop is the one that i wrote the xubuntu iso to /dev/sda (what was the hard drive, see a few rants ago). For some reason, it aggresively boots from that one. I do see my USB stick working (very busy flashing light). Is it maybe possible that it mounts my HD as installation cdrom? The HD contains those files.

Anyone tips?
