When you try to sleep in because you had a long night, but that one flatmate you explicitly told to try to be quieter can't do exactly that...
When you are a programmer and a night owl and your flatmate always goes to sleep early and stands up early...
Why can't everybody be a night owl :D -
Online coding challenges are so addicting!! :D
It's 4:44 now, the sky is starting to light up already, finally going to sleep.2 -
Just found out that at least three other people in my tutorial (six people total) are also on devRant. Seems to be quite popular here :D1

Fucking Apache Maven. We are required to use it at university and it's shit. Sometimes I think that successful usage relies solely on the position of the stars in our galaxy, since stuff will work after trying same thing again five times.
Maven == Insanity -
The moment when you stayed up far too late setting up a new OS for your PC, stood up too late, it's now 15:09, and you're not sure if you're eating breakfast, lunch or dinner right now

Me on my laptop. My flatmate is next to me. I'm trying to create a live CD.
Me: I'm gonna dd this iso on the USB. What is the output file? /dev/...?
Flatmate: /dev/sda.
Me: Okay, th... Waiiiiitt...
*Flatmate laughs his ass off*5 -
Me: *enters password on phone (long PIN)*
Person next to me is looking at my phone WHILE I enter my password, and as I look at him, he doesn't even turn away and even has the nerve to say:
"Wow, why do you have such a long password!"
Μy answer: "Because of security reasons."
What I actually wanted to say:
"Because of pieces of SHIT like you who can't keep their eyes to themselves, even when PASSWORDS are involved, you FUCK! Guess why everytime I enter a password in public, I have to dim my screen and turn my screen sideways? Because of fuckheads like you, not knowing shit about privacy and security! Fuck you!"7 -
Someone I know quite well just told me that they have a hard drive with a S.M.A.R.T warning and "the internet says" that he can fix the problem by running this amazing built in windows tool called "chkdsk" (he literally learned about this today, as a long-term windows user) or by reformatting the drive.
I've told him that neither of those methods will work, since it is a hardware fault that is being reported by S.M.A.R.T.
He said that there is hope that it'll work, since someone on the internet said so.

If you comment your code like this, I'd like you to rethink your life choices.
This is a project we need to work on in university. The code was given to us.4 -
INFO/WARNING: Some HP audio drivers for certain HP laptops have "integrated keyloggers" enabled. The audio driver would log your keystrokes to look for special keys and saves them to a public folder on your PC (Windows).
I really wonder what kind of total retards decide to implenent features in this way.

Everyday, I am amazed at developers like those here on devRant. I look up at you in awe and admiration, always thinking about how awesome your life probably is, even though you rant about it sometimes. I want to be like many of you in the future.
Thank you for improving our lives with whatever you are doing. I feel like this doesn't get said enough.
Meanwhile, University sucks (failed exams), but I am expected to graduate with good grades. Sigh. I also feel like I'm not learning enough of those things that I need to become a good dev and rather overly complicated math which I'll never need in my later life.24 -
I have a feature suggestion for devrant: some kind of polling system.
This idea came into my mind with the survey a few days ago.
Since almost all of us are devs, aspiring or experienced, we can expect (somewhat) professional opinions, e.g. on how to tackle a specific problem.
Maybe it's even possible to make this a paid service somehow. I thought about this:
Open a poll for all registered users: $0
Add requirements for a user to have to be able to vote on the poll: +0.99$ each:
- has ranted at least X times
- has at least X ++s
- has a StackOverflow account connected
...
This way, the OP can narrow down the target audience to a specific group.
Maybe...? I don't know if something like this already exists somewhere else.3 -
I just realized that out of the eleven 2.4 GHz WiFi networks in my vicinity, seven operate on Channel 1, two on Ch.6 and mine is the only one on Ch.13.
I am also the only one with 5Ghz WiFi.9 -
The worst type of exam question in University for me:
Using first-order logic (predicate logic) express the following statements:
(i) Every student except Tom is smiling.
(ii) Everyone likes everyone who doesn't like himself.
Answers:
(i) ∀x(student(x)→(¬Tom(x) <-> smiling(x)))
(ii) ∀x∀y(¬likes(y,y)→likes(x,y)) -
I woke up nicely, made my coffee and breakfast, got into coding mood, really motivated.
"Huh, how am I supposed to do this... Let's Google. Ah, StackOverflow has the perfect solution to my problem."
*clicks link*
*irritated internal scream*

I don't really like WhatsApp, but I am forced to use it to keep in touch with some friends that don't use messengers like Signal or Telegram.
Today, I see this. What the hell is this crap? Snapchat 2.0? Whatssnap? Who thought this would be a good idea?
Fuck WhatsApp (and Facebook).12 -
Fucking piece of shit German internet man. Some of you might know that Germany probably has the shittiest internet in the EU. And by shitty, I don't mean the downstream speeds you can get (which is how most ISPs justify their crappy network), but the GODDAMN UPSTREAM SPEEDS.
See, I'm just a student, right? I don't run a fucking company or something like that. I don't need / can't afford a symmetrical gigabit connection. But I do a lot of stuff that requires a decent upstream connection.
Fucking Unitymedia (my ISP), if I already decide to buy the goddamn "business plan" (IPv6 & static adresses), at least supply me with some decent upstream speeds. PLEASE!
My current plan costs ~45€ a month for internet and TV (I don't watch, but my two other flat-mates do).
Internet speeds are 150 Mbit/s down and FUCKING 10 Mbit/s up! What??! What the hell am I supposed to do with only 10 Mbit/s?? I'm already completely exhausting the bandwidth and I'm not even done setting everything up! Fucking hell...
I was planning on getting their "upload package" to get at least 20 Mbit/s up – but they removed that option! IT'S GONE, PEOPLE! They said in an interview last year that "customers are not interested in higher upload speeds" and consequently removed that option. WHAT???
"You wanna have state-of-the-art downstream speeds of 400 Mbit/s? Here you go. Oh, our maximum limit of 10 Mbit/s upstream is not enough for you? TOO FUCKING BAD, NOTHING THAT WE CAN OFFER YOU!"
(Seriously though, the best customer internet plan is 400D & 10U)
Goddamn... in this day and age of things like cloud storage etc. even "normal" people definitely need higher upload speeds.
Man, this rant got so long, but I really wanted to get this out. This wasn't even everything though, maybe I'll make a separate rant to elaborate on other issues.
