A bit of backstory...

I have been the sole dev at my organization for awhile now (other two left for other jobs), so I have been maintaing and writing new code to support the business.

Our company was recently acquired by a larger entity and it has been very strange so far.

1. It has taken 5 weeks to acquire local admin rights on my own machine (I work remote) as well as a visual studio license.

2. We have known for a few weeks now we are getting a jr dev who will need the SAME procedures done on his machine/account and it has been two weeks now and nothing has been done. (Tickets have been put it - the issues have been escalated etc etc)

3. All of our code from our old company is in Azure Devops (which is connected to Azure AD) for some reason I haven't been able to add an external account (for my new account and org) to move the code elsewhere. I don't have the authority (I don't think) to place all of our code in a new location (GitHub,GitLab, self hosted solutions, etc)

4. All of our production VMs are billed through our old org located in Azure, so eventually that bill will stop being paid since we transitioned - I've brought this up to my manager (more non technical) who wasn't terribly worried about it.

5. I'm feeling slightly unfulfilled in this position. Earlier in my time here it was new and exciting, but there isn't much direction, not many goals, or interesting problems to solve.

Just wanted to express some issues that had been going on. Feel free to add ant feedback of suggestions 😄

What is your preferred team size? Have you had a better experience working on a larger or smaller team?

Has anyone felt the need to go back to school after finishing their 4 year degree? There are a handful of reasons why I want to, but for some reason it seems like it might be a waste of time/money.

On the other hand I miss the atmosphere, constant learning, and feeling like I'm a part of a community. Although getting a paycheck is nice.

Any thoughts/input?

Does anyone else enjoy working remote but also have complaints about it? My biggest complaint is not being on a schedule and getting out enough.

More often than not I find myself not tired at the end of the day, so falling asleep is hard. I guess the commute drains you a lot more than I assumed. My previous 1hr+ commute both ways has turned into a roll out of bed and begin working commute.

I keep wanting to go work from a coffee shop or something, but just haven't. I've also considered travelling somewhere and working from s different city for a few days but haven't tried that either.

What are your favorite keyboard switches for your mechanical keyboard setup? I'm looking to get a Vortex Race 3. I currently own a keyboard with topre and mx blues. I'm leaning toward blues currently.

How does your team approach code reviews? What sort of processes/tools do you make use of?

Currently my team uses TFS (which I'm not a huge fan of). I'm trying to figure out how to track issues (requests) and the code review process.

Is it sort of silly to work remote, but from a different place (library, shop, mall)?

I've had one remote job in the past, but start another tomorrow and I'm hoping to try to work from different places.

All of the posts of folks with their laptops on beaches, looking at waterfalls, and such make me happy.
