CS Professor: “What M word is the black hole to all productivity?”
Student: “Management”
CS Professor: “Was going to say meetings but that’s better”16 -
From the time i became manager, productivity of the team has increased, one of the reasons is : after a 3 or 4 hour of working, we play online video game for about half an hour, then we continue. This way really had an impact on our productivity.10
-
*loud thud*
That was my productivity falling out a window. I just found a shit load of bubble wrap lying around!
Safe to say, productivity efficiently ruined.19 -
To anyone who recommended Silicon Valley, I hate you é_è. I've now finished 3 seasons in barely 3 days, my productivity never got this low before14
-
In my hunt for the perfect productivity app I came upon something called Freeter.
It is a productivity app that lets me gather what I need for the work I'm working on, and then manage it all in one place.
For me, It's super nice to be able to check tasks in Trello, or communicating in Slack without having to change tabs or open a new browser.
Try it out and tell me what you think8 -
I was totally in the zone earlier.
Plenty of caffeine, plenty of anger thanks to idiots, rocking out to Amon Amarth and Disturbed, and chewing through a difficult logic problem. It was wonderful.
Then.
Then there was a mandatory all-hands meeting. A mandatory meeting entirely consisting of someone doing a (admittedly decent) presentation on very basic marketing. (Basic as in "This is what ROI is." 🙄) It lasted for about 40 minutes, totally killing my zone and butchering my productivity. I've barely gotten anything done the rest of the day, thanks to that.
On the bright side, I worked out the logic on stickies during the talky-people bits. Maybe I'll be able to write it tomorrow.4 -
StackOverflow's mouse cursor effect is exponentially decreasing my productivity as I go through the day.
I can't stop watching it.2 -
FUCK THIS! FUUUUCKKKKKK THIIIS!... one would be fucking excited and motivated to finish work, but your entire fucking productivity is hanging from the internet connection's dick!!!!.. Fuckin ISP mother fucker! FUCK!... i can't fuckin work under these conditions for fuck's sake! SHIT!10
-
5 screens... 3 monitors, main screen, app connecting my iPad Pro screen. now I can be productive and distracted without having to change tabs...15

I can not function today in my hot office (no AC). I'm just reading rants in JSON format to look like I'm working. I may need a USB Desk Fan to improve my productivity. Anybody have recommendations?8

Best experience: Downloading devRant
Worst experience: Being on devRant for so long it's making my productivity go down. 😑2 -
Manager: We are now using libraries for everything. I estimate based on nothing that this will increase productivity x20.
*Project grinds to a halt while devs scramble to learn/implement new library*
General Manager: Where was the productivity increase?
Manager: Our devs are not willing to learn new things quickly4 -
To save server cost and developers' productivity, devRant should have an intentional downtime of 3 to 6 hours daily :37
-
At one of my previous companies, there was a guy, let's call him X.
X was the ideal employee.
X used to come to office at 8.
X used to go to sleep in AC office.
X used to wake up at 10 when everyone started coming in.
X used to play Uno and Pokemon Go till 6.
X was a master in Uno and Pokemon Go.
X used to wait till 8 to get free cab facility.
X didn't do one single productive piece of shit whole day.
My boss loved X Because he came early and left late.
My boss didn't give a damn if that person even switched on his laptop or not.
My boss didn't care about productivity.
I didn't come on time and didn't leave on time (I travelled in non-traffic hours)
I slogged my ass off because I really wanted to learn.
My boss scolded me, asked to be like X.
This was the last straw.
I resigned the next day.
I never wanted to be like X. Seeing him daily, motivated me so much.
When I worked, I focussed on it, I didn't keep checking the clock waiting for it to hit 5 pm.
I aimed for productivity, set realistic targets and always achieved them, no matter what.
My boss was an a--hole. I met X and Boss recently. Both are still in the same role, just scraping through.
Felt really good that I worked hard and have achieved something in life ^_^13 -
So I wanted to have a productive coding day, but I failed due to getting lost trying to write a Sublime Text plugin that would improve my productivity.2
-
I always find it more productive to have at least two ongoing projects at once.
That way, if I get stuck on a bug/frustrated with the first project, I focus on the second and more often than not, when I go back to the first project I realize that I had made a dumb mistake and keep going.2 -
Might sound weird but I pretend somebody is watching me through my own eyes. Somebody I want to impress, or make jealous, of my productivity and skill. Elaborate, but it works.3
-
Sorry. I don’t give out free tips.
These are the available packages:

1 ad between every tip.
TipsPack Premium (17.99$): 20 tips + 1 bonus tip for 10x productivity. 2 ads.
One bug fix free when you purchase either pack.7 -
I'd say VIM, but I end up spending the day customizing my .vimrc file instead of actual productivity.2

Manager: What the heck are you guys doing? Pair programming?! That would halve the team productivity!!!
We:
Manager: Alright, Let's do a "quick" four hours meeting. Everyone in the company MUST attend!

Couldn't get stress ball from devRant.. But I found one at work.. Now it's mine 😀
After 5 min with it, my stress levels dropped and productivity also..2 -
Can't decide if I should buy a Macbook Pro or a fucking car. Both would improve my productivity in different ways. What do you suggest?26
-
Stuck on a problem for 2 hours, walk away for a coffee, return to fix it in 2 mins.
Should take breaks every 5 mins to maximize productivity.8 -
Anyone else approach coding with the mindset of - "make it work, then make it right".
It really helped me up my productivity9 -
Programming is not about learning many languages, it's about making a way to simplify a task. With increasing it's productivity and minimizing task duration.2

Since I joined DevRant my productivity went down...
Well... Im not sure if I should be happy or sad about it.7 -
Productivity struggles... Am I the only one who is super productive between 7am - 12:30pm. And after those hours I'm near useless 😞. Brain is to tired to solve problems effectively.
How do you guys combat the afternoon slump/drain?21 -
When you move from one "agile" company to a truly agile company. Wow. Productivity has gone through the roof!2
-
I think my productivity at work seriously went up when I discovered this site with custom noise generators. Blocks out my coworkers, and I can pretend it's raining all the time. Perfect for coding!
http://mynoise.net/NoiseMachines/...2 -
Me: Right, time to sit down and write some code.
Also me: I think I need to try a new IDE to see if that makes me more productive.
Productivity tools are my own productivity anti-pattern...!3 -
Godaddy sucks, godaddy sucks, godaddy sucks, Godaddy sucks, godaddy sucks, godaddy sucks, Godaddy sucks, godaddy sucks, godaddy sucks, Godaddy sucks, godaddy sucks, godaddy sucks, goddady sucks...
Wwwwaaaahhhhh why you kill our productivity!!!4 -
Today I discovered what slowed my productivity the most: variable naming.
In a project I was naming many variables 'dirname' in different parts of the my code, but it represented 3 things: only the name of the directory, relative path + directory, and absolute path + directory.
I wasted to much time just figuring out which was which everytime until I finally decided to organize variables names better and see the wonders of the world. Result:
- dirname: only the name
- reldirname: relative path + dir
- absdirname: absolute path + dir
Such simple solution, yet took me years to actually see the benefits, my god
(First devRant post btw :3)7 -
My headphones just died because the battery is empty!
Not a good start!
I forgot the cable at home!
Bye bye peace, productivity, and focus6 -
When you realize that you've been been flipping between two tabs in your browser for the better part of an hour, and they have nothing to do with your project, you need the day to end.1
-
Truth: You will regret not using Kotlin as soon as possible. Don't deprive yourself of pleasant development and productivity boost.5
-
today I saw conditions in the gov office.
their fucking web app from ancient time depended on IE browser.
And
We were expecting productivity from them.

Started developing a new expansion for C# out of a very personal need. It's called Dyslex-C# and it contains the normal C# functions spelled wrong since I seem to do it all the time anyway. Hello Wrold! Productivity++.3

Just two more weeks until I'm at full productivity again... Typing with this thing on is not very easy!5

Accidentally went to Reddit when searching for Redux.

I think one of the best moment of life is finding a good song all of sudden. It's like finding a new drug which I can just inject in my ear and code at 100% productivity. -
MMMH DEVELOPER PRODUCTIVITY IS NOT THAT GREAT... YOU KNOW WHAT I'LL MAKE SURE THEY SPEND 90% OF THEIR TIME IN FUCKING CONFERENCE CALLS, THAT IS SURELY GOING TO HELP THEM GET THEIR JOB DONE
Some manager at my company, probably.2 -
I love to code in coffee shop likes Starbucks and its really boost my productivity, until I realized I could broke if I always go here so I make clone the Starbucks environments to my bedroom.
Then I buy cheap loudspeakers and coffee bean, playing unknown jazz music and pretend that I am in coffee shop. productivity increased! outcome decreased!1 -
If you are working on multiple projects a great tool to make you very productive and keep organized is a simple checklist.
For many years I have jotted one down each and every morning listing what I want to accomplish that day. I even include simple items. Crossing each task out as I complete it gives me a sense of accomplishment.
Checklists have enabled me to complete projects at work and many free and commercial side projects including software and technical books.
Do you use checklists? If there is a particular type you like?15 -
Working late nights for the most productivity because you're a night owl and don't have to interact with a new colleague/coworker/manager/client every 5 minutes1

Disclaimer: I apologise in advance for those tired of language wars, if it bugs you that much just skip this rant.
"C++ is better than C"
An accepted truth. OO is better than Procedural, C++ is an upgrade from C, it fixed all the problems.
End of.
Except - when it comes to actual evidence, empirical studies have shown that there are no productivity gains with C++ vs C.
This bugs me the most because it's such a fringe view, OO has dominated industry purely by dogma, alternative programming paradigms are just simply ignored because: "OO is best. End of."

I've started to do some time tracking and just after one day of doing it I noticed that I can't get more that 10 mins working without someone interrupting me.
I love to help and hate to say no, but this is killing my productivity and delaying my work.
Most of the time my help isn't really needed too. "Did you clear the cache?" "Did you run yarn install after pulling?" "Let me look at the stack trace/error message." Sentences like these are all I need to say most of the time.
Did my coworkers get lazy because I'm there to help? Should I start say "not now" more often? Or should I just look for a better team somewhere else?5 -
This is the poster I have on my door, in the hopes it would determine people from disturbing me and consequently taking me out of the zone and productivity streak I'm on. Sadly it does not work as often as I'd like it to 🙁 but I still love it 😆6

Is it just me, or companies using the word “supercharge” is cringe? Supercharge your coding skills, supercharge your productivity, supercharge this, supercharge that. WTF does that even mean?9
-
Fuck me sideways. I work for a small business doing most of their IT work, a lot of which is in-house software development. Today I was working on a feature of our employee schedule system that I wrote and for the last couple of hours, my laptop (which is my dev machine) kept freezing up on me every ten minutes or so... 😬
Well, I finally found the cause, but only after running apt-get update/upgrade to see if updating fixed the issue. I haven't updated in a LONG time... Productivity is not on the agenda for today I suppose.5 -
It's so fucking hot today, just seriously fucking rediculous. Thinking of taking the laptop to code at the beer garden - will be the only way to get any productivity done.
Thoughts?5 -
I just feel sad for the productivity app that I downloaded couple of months ago :(
I never even opened it for once1 -
There are two types of people: Doers, and Talkers.
It really annoys me when talkers (who do nothing) ask me to stop doing things because it makes their lack of productivity look bad.
So sorry sweetheart, if you want to look better, just start doing work yourself and then you don't have to worry about my work making you look bad.4 -
when you have one of those days where your mind constantly blanks out and your ability to focus is null...

My productivity reduces by almost half after lunch and reduces to 10% the day I leave headphones at home. It is only after tea break in the afternoon that slowly I start getting back on track again3

developer makes a "missed-a-semicolon"-kind of mistake that brings your non-production infrastructure down.
manager goes crazy. rallies the whole team into a meeting to find "whom to hold accountable for this stupid mistake" ( read : whom should I blame? ).
spend 1-hour to investigate the problem. send out another developer to fix the problem.
... continue digging ...
( with every step in the software development lifecycle handbook; the only step missing was to pull the handbook itself out )
finds that the developer followed the development process well ( no hoops jumped ).
the error was missed during the code review because the reviewer didn't actually "review" the code, but reported that they had "reviewed and merged" the code
get asked why we're all spending time trying to fix a problem that occurred in a non-production environment. apparently, now it is about figuring out the root cause so that it doesn't happen in production.
we're ALL now staring at the SAME pull request. now the manager is suddenly more mad because the developer used brackets to indicate the pseudo-path where the change occurred.
"WHY WOULD YOU WASTE 30-SECONDS PUTTING ALL THOSE BRACES? YOU'RE ALREADY ON A BRANCH!"
PS : the reason I didn't quote any of the manager's words until the end was because they were screaming all along, so, I'd have to type in ALL CAPS-case. I'm a CAPS-case-hater by-default ( except for the singular use of "I" ( eye; indicating myself ) )
WTF? I mean, walk your temper off first ( I don't mean literally, right now; for now, consider it a figure of speech. I wish I could ask you to do it literally; but no, I'm not that much of a sadist just yet ). Then come back and decide what you actually want to be pissed about. Then think more; about whether you want to kill everyone else's productivity by rallying the entire team ( OK, I'm exaggerating, it's a small team of 4 people; excluding the manager ) to look at an issue that happened in a non-production environment.
At the end of the week, you're still going to come back and say we're behind schedule because we didn't get any work done.
Well, here's 4 hours of our time consumed away by you.
This manager also has a habit of saying, "getting on X's case". Even if it is a discussion ( and not a debate ). What is that supposed to mean? Did X commit such a grave crime that they need to be condemned to hell?
I miss my old organization where there was a strict no-blame policy. Their strategy was, "OK, we have an issue, let's fix it and move on."
I've gotten involved ( not caused it ) in even bigger issues ( like an almost-data-breach ) and nobody ever pointed a finger at another person.
Even though we all knew who caused the issue. Some even went beyond and defended the person. Like, "Them. No, that's not possible. They won't do such dumb mistakes. They're very thorough with their work."
No one even talked about the person behind their back either ( at least I wasn't involved in any such conversation ). Even later, after the whole issue had settled down. I don't think people brought it up later either ( though it was kind of a hush-hush need-to-know event )
Now I realize the other unsaid-advantage of the no-blame policy. You don't lose 4 hours of your so-called "quarantine productivity". We're already short on productivity. Please don't add anymore. 🙏11 -
Just got Caffiene/energy drink vapes and they work like a charm within like five minutes. Productivity 💯 sleep 0rant fuck work tired development fuck sleep late night energy drinks late sleepy awake coding no sleep35

A guy came from another city, just to teach a little bit on how to improve productivity, and after almost 2 hours of him telling stories about his life and career, in five minutes he told us to delete games and facebook from our cellphones, and only focus on learning and work related apps... And He tried to sell us the complete series of books and videos with the full content on productivity in the end...4

After 13 months of 12 hour days going back to 7 hours, how will I explain productivity going up... (Been burnt out for last 10 months)4

My productivity hack? I code in the shower and use a water whiteboard. I have to be up very early and feel the most clear headed right when I wake up.
If I'm stumped on something, I can usually tackle it from a new perspective. For the most part it works out. Other then the occasional profanity if I accidentally erase something and the sometimes longer than usual showers, my wife doesn't mind. Usually because it's 5 in the morning and when she takes a shower there is this scribble that she tries to decode!1 -
It may be shocking to you if you are involved in management but actually pressuring people to meet arbitrary deadlines is not an effective way to improve productivity5

Had suggested using Workstations and external monitors for the workforce to improve the overall productivity.
Fell on Deaf Ears...
Now, almost a year later, suggestions come from the top level asking for the same !

Productivity is at an all time low because last night just before sleeping I fought with my girlfriend for sharing a click bait link on her Facebook.5

' "productivity" software':
trying to format a document in Word / Libre Office,
text defaults to some condensed serif font,
any at-sign, "http" or "www" automatically generates a hyperlink in an ink-blue color,
formatting and alignment of lines or paragraphs causes unrelated other elements to change unless you make sure to use tables, tables, and nested tables everywhere like it's Netscape 20032 -
My productivity has gone fucking low.
I have hundreds of things ti do , Prepare for exams, write code for my internship project, write code for my game, learn new things about ML,etc.
But all I fuckin do is play games all day instead of making mine!
Plz help, give me some words of encouragement or tell me something that you do to boost your productivity and keep away from distractions !6 -
When your boss buys you two monitors so that you can have your code on one screen and the development site on the other but you're still unable to double productivity 🤔2

Another Monday, another 3.5 hour IT meeting where the devs give 5 minutes of updates then sit through 3 hours and 25 mins of the network team getting their shit together.

Everyone talking about Docker as the next big step in productivity. I still miss why Docker is so useful, to be honest, I see it as a "micro-vm " running your own software.
I have used this technology before but I really struggle to see where I could apply it usefully.
At this point, I'm thinking I'm just too naive about the issues it solves. So lemme go straight to the point:
1. How does Docker speed up your productivity?
2. How do you use it?17 -

It's not a good start for today. I'm sipping my breakfast coffee at my house at 10:13. I just couldn't drag my ass out of bed this morning. I turn off all my alarms and just stayed under the blanket. Winter is my enemy.
Hope I will work with good focus later when I get to office. -
Is it normal for productivity to wildly fluctuate from one week, or even one day, to the next? There are days where I hardly get a couple of hours of real work in and others where it's eight hours straight, and I find it hard to "justify" to myself why the former happens if I'm capable of the latter.5

Sitting super hot and extremely loud marketing girls next to your entire developer staff is a good way to decrease productivity. not to mention how extremely annoying they can be at times. ugh!!4

I'M OUT OF WHISKY!

I think it's more important to have right kind of headphones and music than a good editor to improve productivity as a developer5

Very conflicted about ProductHunt.
On one hand, love seeing all the new little productivity tools and SaaS tools with really nice UI. Fairly inspiring.
On the other hand, sometimes they can be complete cringe over there. It almost seems like a cult sometimes and they are way too enthusiastic about even the most boring things
ProductHunt: "This new productivity tool 🚀 will absolutely 🎉 change your life 😛. it is DISRUPTING 💪🏼 team management."1 -
Is there anything worse than maintaining two versions of the same application? Checking out two branches and submitting two pull requests for each and every single thing is killing my productivity. 😔3

Fail fast. But also... someone in a different area screwed up really bad.... so everyone can now enjoy this turning kit on productivity called a change freeze... it may be lasting for months... also... we're going to be putting a higher emphasis on productivity. So do more, but also, don't. Because we're freaking idiots.3

Relationship between ranting and productivity.
When productivity increases, ranting increases as you are dealing with a lot of shit. So ranting is actually beneficial to high productivity.
When productivity decreases below zero because you have a lot of fucking problems, your ranting also increases sharply.
The only peace zone is with moderate, positive or negative, productivity and low ranting, i.e when you are not doing much16 -
It is fascinating to see how my motivation and productivity decreases while working on legacy code.2

I found out today that productivity gains by TDD doesn't actually have any empirical backing despite numerous studies.
It now goes in the same drawer as object oriented programming.6 -
My productivity today:
- [11:05] Decided to get something done to be able to enjoy the evening even more (an important deadline draws near).
- [11:06] Ran out of coffee apparently. Well, that sucks.
- [11:25] Trouble with the environment on my machine at home.
- [14:00] Trouble continues, tried using tools to fix trouble, ran into trouble with said tools, ended up fixing trouble with tools before fixing trouble with environment with tools.
- [15:30] Fixed environment, finally ready to get something done.
- [16:30] Spent an hour browsing the web.
- [16:31] Decided this was enough work for a saturday.
Well.1 -
I read once "productivity is elimination of distractions" or something like that.
And honestly, it has worked so far.
Motivation is even better tho. But if I'm really unmotivated, or anxious, I subconsciously create distractions; then I have to deal with me inner child. Point is, motivation has a direct line to productivity, so I usually don't do what I can't bring yourself to do.2 -

I spend more time reading bad written documentations with ugly examples that don't work (and anyways won't apply to other use cases) and reading about new concepts and new frameworks that should increase productivity, instead than actually write code and program.
Yes, it's increasing productivity, but it's not fun anymore -
Ugh, meetings - the productivity vacuum of corporate life. Like who's got time for those never-ending discussions and PowerPoint slogs. 🙄💼6

So Instagram recently launched 'Threads' as it's standalone messaging app... Although it seems like a bad replica of Snapchat I still liked the minimal messaging interface. Have switched my personal account from main app to threads to improve productivity. Let's see how it turns out to be in the next few days.3

I love listening to music when programming. It's not something I started because I wanted to, but it just kinda happened.
In my first job as an intern, they followed concept of open office, a very shitty strategy as it led to chaos and noise all the time around my desk. To move away from that, bought a pair of Sony headphones, which I still consider as my best investment.
Started listening to songs since they're a better choice in the cacophony of chaos present around. These days, even though I work in a regular and calm environment still can't seem to get rid of the practice of listening to songs.
Anyone here have similar experience??
P.S. Suggest some good songs to listen to while programming!!1 -
That moment when project managers all demand a share of your weekly hours, failing to accept that productivity diminishes exponentially with the number of projects you have to switch between.
-
Hi fellow devs!
As a developer it is a crucial to be productive. Obviously the most effecient way is to get in the flow.
What is your rituale to reach this state?7 -
y'know what's ironic? people rush over things and avoid meetings, documentation or just speaking to each other, all for the sake of productivity, not realizing that's what destroys the team2
-
Urrg my secundary screen tipped over and now its broken.
like seriously wtf?
it only fell like 30 cm, why would it break that easily?
Anyway, back to one screen productivity. FML4 -
Anyone got one of these super wide-screen 49" beasts? Gimmick, or genuinely useful for productivity? Don't care about gaming.

Anyone with experience in microdosing psychedelics, how's your experience so far? I'm mostly interested in effects on mood, creativity, and productivity I guess - but feel free to share other aspects of it.22

Atm, the most painful tooling is Rational ClearCase for version control (wtf?!) and IBM DOORS for reqs and test specs on a Windows machine.
Productivity = -13 -
Why are people so stupid?
Everything you tell them is like hot air for them.
For example, we told them not to write down passwords and what are they doing? They write them down.
We tell them not to install private software on their work phones and what are they doing? They install private software.
We tell them to lock their workstations If they aren't at their place. But their not doing it.
I really hate people...7 -
I've gone through so many tiling wm this semester and can't figure out what I like best...
i3, bspwm, xmonad, windowchef, herbstuffwm, awesomewm, fvwm, etc.
I love the cleanliness and productivity aspect of them compared to something like Windows and it's floating/snap feature. Awesomewm looks like a good choice but the config scripting is quite verbose.
So many choices! Probably doesn't help I want to keep it consistent across my laptop and 3 monitor setup (1 21:9, 2 16:9).4 -
Working From Home is going good?
Is productivity level is increased or decreased?
I am fed up of the weekend works and also anytime call.7 -
Nearly half (47%) of workers using AI say they have no idea how to achieve the productivity gains their employers expect.
Over three in four (77%) say AI tools have decreased their productivity and added to their workload in at least one way.

Have a lot to do so I only sleep for four hours.
Next day take 4 hour nap and waste entire afternoon.
Productivity pre alpha. -
I've realised that I should probably get another desk at home if I want my productivity back. It's small, rickety AF and my wife keeps putting crap on it. Any other tips for keeping productivity up @ home?7
-
TLDR: It's okay to take naps while working from home
Brief:
I feel that there is nothing wrong with taking afternoon naps while working from home. Mainly because after taking rest for a couple of hours my mind is re-energised and I am able to pull off quite a lot of work in much lesser time after waking up and my overall productivity for the day roughly remains same.
This is mainly because if I end up staying awake even when I am tired and sleepy there is not much productive work done even if my number of hours online increase.
And if a company has strict measures set for calculating the number of hour employee stays online while working from home then it will actually reduce overall employee productivity rather than having any kind of actual benefits.3 -
Pressing Ctrl+C shouldn't overwrite an existing clipboard entry that has just been created by pressing Ctrl+C immediately before.
Who thought it was a good idea to use copy + paste shortcut keys exactly next to each other? Some people's muscle memory does not work with such a fine subtlety.
How much working hours, days or even years must have been wasted by people using productivity software accidentally losing what they were about to paste from their clipboards?
Anticipating the first comments, yes, that's another kind of first-world problems affecting people that spend too much life time doing stupid office work on a (German) (PC) keyboard, but here we are, procrastinating on devRant ant wasting even more time.
Antipating even more comments: why am I using a keyboard to work in a German train on a sunny Sunday instead of relaxing at a lake or a swimming pool instead? Well, at least this train doesn't seem to have a pool. More luxury problems for me.3 -
Lack of sleep, being tired.
Yepp, that is boring. But that's what kills my productivity. Anything else is just excuses for being lazy..Because of lack of sleep and being tired -
Some days I look back at the work I had done that day and think to myself, "what the fuck took me so long?".1
-
I think deja vu is even worse for me
*as a developer*, even if it wasn't true,
thinking 'I have a already done this
exact thing before' is such a downer
for productivity..
For some reason I just had it with Xorg,
I don't think I ever touched it before..2 -

Since few days/weeks, I'm way less productive, much easily distracted, not into my job ... I'm the only dev here, mostly alone at office, and a lot of pressure on my shoulders ... Do you have some tips, to gain productivity, and have the smile back ?
PS : every single day I just dream about my current side project, but it's my job who pays the bills ..14 -
Productivity Hack: I'm a java developer who decided to write a productivity app that integrates to-do, pomodoro and eisenhower matrix altogether with reports generation. this will also help me logging at work. I'm also using electron + angular2 + typescript, just because, well, I'm trying to learn new stuff.
Long story short, many many many many days later, i'm still waiting for that productivity boost. What is dis webpack? Wat u mean loaders? Wat promises? electron-prebuilt is now electron? Wat u mean npm and node should be updated? .....

When rage turns to sadness :
With great frustration wrote and debugged android code since morning , so as a reward , I thought about rebooting my laptop once the code was working and committing it later. Code ran , rebooted my laptop and went to get some coffee, only to find that bodhi crashed and wouldn't run without live usb. No commit, no backup, all went down the drain1 -
Do you guys know brain.fm? Its superb making you more productive. I have found it yesterday and it is look promising to my productivity.2

#cursee&productivity
I'm beating the never ending tasks one after another past few days. Proud of myself and at the same time a bit tired.
Main problem is focus.
I can easily lose my focus along the way and then live the unproductive days for up to a week or more. I'm afraid to fall into that sink hole. 😣
So when I gained my focus, I try my best not to lose it. Which makes me lose track of other shits. Some shits are major like relationship responsibility, social etiquette etc. Some shits are minor like food and water. Nevertheless it's not very physically healthy nor spiritually.
I don't know how to easily switch on and off my focus. 😞
Maybe I should meditate 🤔 I don't know.3 -
Spent a few hours optimising a procedure...
It's almost quitting time now, my procedure is returning wrong results in more time...
I hate "productivity" on Friday... -
Any advise how to begin a project by fast pace cause I'm slow and procrastinating at starting and get interested later on, which is not good for productivity3

Team Lead (not my team, thankfully) sends outs a team-wide message (in their exact words):
"please DM me with the task link if you are adding any new tasks in Jira. This is to make sure that i am aware of any ad-hoc task coming up in the jira queue and also to make sure that all the task are following a common template."
Interpretation : "I'm just too lazy to look at each jira issue after the last one that I followed up on (which is my job BTW). So I'll add some extra work for you to explain everything to me on DM"
Way to go for killing productivity. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thankfully, this is not my team. If they were my team lead, I'd be super furious. I'd even report it to upper management. I'd even offer to do their job and let them do mine. I think their job just got so easy if everyone was to go report to him like that.3 -
My morning productivity so far: compiling some code while a full-length show I edited renders. (Not pictured: the machine learning model I'm also training.)
I pity my processor.4 -
Finished planned tasks for personal side project early in the morning and overall the day started on a positive note.

No rant here, but anyone else's productivity been squashed today due to the Pokemon Go release last night? haha3

Hire are a few tips to up productivity on development which has worked for me:
1) Use a system of at least 16gb ram when writing codes that requires compilation to run.
2) Test your code at most 3 times within an hour. This will combat the bad habit of practically checking changes on every new block you write.
3) Use internet modem in place of mobile hotspot and keep mobile data switched off. This will combat interruptions from your IM contacts and temptations to check your WA status update when working.
4) Implementation before optimisation... This is really important. It's tempting to rewrite a whole block even when other task are pending. If it works just leave it as is and move on to the next bull to kill, you can come back later to optimise.
5) Understand that no language is the best. Sometimes folks claim that PHP is faster than python. Okay I say but let's place a bet and I'll write a python code 10 times faster than your PHP on holiday. Focus more on your skill-set than the language else you'd find yourself switching frameworks more than necessary.
6) Check for existing code before writing an implementation from scratch... I bet you 50 bucks to your 10 someone already wrote that.
7) If it fails the first and then the second time... Don't try the third, check on StackOverflow for similar challenge.
8) When working with testers always ask for reproducible steps... Don't just start fixing bugs because sometimes their explanation looks like a bug when other times it's not and you can end up fixing what's never there.
9) If you're a tester always ask for explanations from the dev before calling a bug... It will save both your time and everybody's.
10) Don't be adamant to switching IDE... VSCode is much productive than Notepad++. Just give it a try an see for yourself.
My 10 cents.1 -
Kut boosts CLI productivity by organizing commands. I recently put lots of work into it and I am looking for testers / contributors / critics!3

Today I am experiencing all the joys of workspace virtualisation, with CIT that only looks at security, not what is used by the people and why... They restrict me now from doing my work... While I am sitting at home 🤭 yeah open up another ticket explaining these asshats that we need things to get our jobs done, and that they just do things to pretend to enhance security by destroying productivity
Let us walk into ragnarok with sun on our faces... Why the fuck do I even work here? -

Tips for staying productive?
What is your definition of productivity, and why does everybody seem to care about productivity?
How can we stop selling efficiency and focus on effectiveness instead?2 -
Making an entirely instrumental playlist has increased my productivity and consentration more than I ever thought possible.
Thanks wolfgang for making some sweet tunes!2 -
My music (often MrSuicideSheep long mixes) + good mood + my computer + knowledge of IDE or vim keybindings = maximum productivity

Having to rebuild and start my Hybris server while learning the framework really kills my productivity... What am I supposed to do for ten minutes while it sorts itself out?
I miss the days compilation only took seconds... -
Working from home is fucking bad. I'm finding myself skiving big time. Finding it difficult to focus, letting people down because when I should be working - my feet are up on the table and I'm on YouTube with no pants on. Also - the code I have been contributing to the repository is utter shite.
Wtf.7 -

Educate them about context switching and how bad it is for productivity. Also deliver high quality work, at the end you’ll earn their trust and it makes for a much better work environment.

Nothing more unproductive than "productivity software". Preparing presentational slides endangers my good mood. Probably just do a website instead next time!1

I can work productively and for very long hours with a lot of stuff which many dev considers productivity hurdles:
- single small monitor? No problem (in fact in one occasion in which my roommate accidentally broke my laptop charghing port and I couldn't get a spare I worked on an iPad connected trough SSH to a Linux machine completing one of the hardest tasks I ever did without significant loss of productivity)
- old machine? That's ok as long as I can run a minimal Linux and not struggle with Windows
- noise and chatter around me? A 10€ pair of earbuds are enough for me, no noise cancelling needed
- "legacy" stack/programming language? I'd rather spend my days coding in Swift or Rust but in the end I believe which is the dev and its skill which gets the job done not fancy language features so Java 8 will be fine
- no JetBrains or other fancy IDE? Altough some refactoring and code generation stuff is amazing Neovim or VS Code, maybe with the help of some UNIX CLI tools here and there are more than enough
despite this I found out there is a single thing which is like kryptonite for my productivity bringing it from above average* to dangerously low and it's the lack of a quick feedback loop.
For programming tasks that's not a problem because it doesn't matter the language there's always a compiler/interpreter I can use to quickly check what I did and this helps to get quickly in a good work flow but since I went to work with a customer which wants everything deployed on a lazily put together "private cloud" which needs configurations in non-standard and badly documented file formats, has a lot of stuff which instead of being automated gets done trough slowly processed tickets, sometimes things breaks and may take MONTHS to see them fixed... my productivity took a big hit since while I'm still quick at the dev stuff (if I'm able to put together a decent local environment and I don't depend on the cloud of nightmares, something which isn't always warranted) my productivity plummets when I have to integrate what I did or what someone else did in this "cloud" since lacking decent documentation everything has do be done trough a lot of manual tasks and most importantly slow iterations of trial and error. When I have to do that kind stuff (sadly quite often) my brain feels like stuck on "1st gear": I get slow, quickly tired and often I procrastinate a lot even if I force myself out of non work related internet stuff.
*I don't want this to sound braggy but being a passionate developer which breathes computers since childhood and dedicating part of my freetime on continuously improving my skill I have an edge over who do this without much passion or even reluctantly and I say this without wanting to be an èlitist gatekeeper, everyone has to work and tot everybody as the privilege of being passionate in a skill which nowadays has so much market2 -
I don't know why we keep taking on clients whose products are written in a language that's not part of our core expertise
Currently working on 2 products simultaneously, one of which only runs on Windows and the other of which only runs on Linux, so I end up switching OS several times a day...and you'd be correct if you're thinking that that's a massive productivity killer3 -

Question for all you wise neck beards:
I was talking with my boss in his office (I'm an intern), and he was saying one thing I need to work on is making more accurate estimates for when a project will be done. He asked if it was just an attempt to "paint a rosey picture" and asked if I was just afraid to be honest, to which I answered definitely not, I just didn't realize I was being that inaccurate. Any suggestions on how I can correct this? I feel like if I just overestimate by a lot i'm just going to give off a lack of confidence, but I also don't want my boss to think I am just lazing around and not working as hard as I could. Feel like I am in a pickle here.
Also, what are some tips you guys have for staying Focused/Productive? I do a pretty good job as it is, but any more advice would be handy :D
