Omg has Google placed a new ad scheme online or something? It's fucking huge! Almost an entire screen of ads before seeing the first search result.
AAARRGHH 😑4 -
Our company fails the Joel test so badly, most strongly on the question 'Do you use the best tools money can buy?'
I've got the best laptop in the company, which is why I'm not allowed to complain (even though I do, see image), but some of my co-workers have dreadfully slow machines. I pity them so much, especially whenever I sit next to them to do some pair programming e.g.41 -
Stackoverflow has got its userfriendliness problems and all, but I still like that whenever I find a question that I have too, that the answer I'm looking for is probably at the top of the answers. If not, I navigate away immediately.
On the other hand, if I find a question on github, there's so much pollution and scrolling that it takes a lot of time to assess whether the answer is there at all.
Also I feel like github is being used à la Stackoverflow more and more, Q&A rather than repo, but I am against this movement! -
Fuuuuckk. My phone made a video whilst being in my pocket. Google photos uploaded it... Now I'm 2GB over my data bundle limit on the 3rd of the month.... 😑
Apparently the android function "auto-disconnect from network" has a bug, which is gonna cost me1 -
*le me working hard, in the zone*
*a wild popup appear*
*logitech wants to update*
*I look*
*I'm annoyed, I want to continue with what I was doing*
errrhmm what was in doing again?
*Out of the zone*
Fucking update notifications2 -
Our office setup sucks.
Wherever I sit, there's always a (non-dimmable) window right in front of me, or right behind me.
If it's in front of me, I squint the entire day and my eyes hurt. If it's behind me, I look into the glare the entire day and then my eyes hurt.
I feel demoralized because of it.
I've even turned on light theme again to mitigate this. Blasphemy 😥2 -
Facking Windows updates! If I tell you to "shut down and do the facking updates" end quote, I mean now! Not the next time when booting up.
Morherf. Still waiting. It even says "This will take a while". Uggh4 -
Worst fight?
Stubborner against stubbornest.
About a focking fact that was trivially true or false. Fun fact: it didn't matter anyway.
Boy, did we raise our voices and attract the attention of everybody in the room. Lesson learned. -
Can I have a big applause for this recruitment agency that baffled me in a good way?
No I'm not kidding! Their employers are actually not total fuckwits at all, as opposed to ALL previous recruiters I've had the nauseating displeasure of meeting.
They really found me 3 perfectly fitting jobs! (and I'm known to be picky)4 -
God damnit! It's been a while since I lost changes. Let alone saved changes! (I'm a ctrl+s presser)
I committed my changes in git (through the VS team explorer). I got a nice error message saying that an exception occurred. I clicked "OK", as though I accepted it :/ didn't have a choice.
Then gone. All my changes since the commit before that. Only an hour work, but still. It was hard work.
Ctrl+z of course didn't work haha 😥2 -

I used a devRant-themed presentation I had to give about myself to get my job. This was one of the slides3 -
I want to run a theory by you regarding unit tests.
They make up for the time they cost to implement in the long run, no doubt, because when you're refactoring you can easily check whether you broke something.
But: what if you've got integration tests covering almost the entire codebase? For those to succeed the unit tests must succeed as well. So therefore imho the unit tests are redundant.
The only advantage of also having unit tests seems that they can pinpoint the issue more accurately.
Any other advantages? What am I missing? Any thoughts/comments?9 -
I'm starting to feel like coding is too much boilerplate all the time.
I've been thinking about why, and I think (and I'm trying to sound humble here) it's because I'm usually honoring the SRP. But this entails this enormous drawback of enormous amount of code!
Don't get me wrong, I'm usually glad with the design I end up with .... but only after what seems to be hours of typing
Anyone recognize this problem? Suggestions, comments?1 -
I may have been drinking too much coffee. I really like (need?) it.
Do you know the feeling after say eating the same meal a free evenings in a row makes you dislike that for a while?
I think that's happening to me now for coffee :(
What the FACK am I gonna do now? Drink tea? 😦4 -
I was messing around with global git precommit hooks.
Then I went on a holiday for a month, and forgot all about those hooks.
I came back, and then spent 2 days debugging why "git was behaving weirdly". I seriously started questioning whether I had ever even understood git at all. Turns out some moron (me) left some half-baked scripts lying around.
I'm such an idiot -
My dream job, apart from everything that's been mentioned already, is working every other month or so: one month working (not too hard of course), one month off. I'd spend that either travelling or hobbying.

I bought a new pc and am excited about using it, but, Windows wouldn't be Windows if its installation went flawlessly. Facking Windows.
For 4 evenings I've been trying to get Windows 7 installed on it, and it just fails with the sooooo helpful error message 😑 It's missing a driver for a cd/dvd drive but of course it won't specify which, or where to get it. Moreover, I don't even have a facking cd/dvd drive!! Moronic Windows. (I'm (trying to) install via usb). For fuck sake
I tried everything Google had to offer, but to no avail. Now I am just stuck. Silently sitting there... Not coming up with solutions.
I also don't have another laptop or anything so for every idea/attempt I have to go to friends to get it. It just pisses me off. FACKING Windows11 -
Sad rant:
Programming has been my passion since forever, and about a year ago I realized I should make my profession out of that.
I did, and now I don't like programming anymore. 40h a week sucks5 -
Most emotional day?
My friend/colleague getting fired out of the blue!
I was so pissed I immediately tried to resign, but they convinced me to calmly reconsider in few weeks. That would be right about now...2 -
I needed to log in on a website in someone else's pc and didn't know the password by heart. I thought I'd log into chrome, if I log out later, what could go wrong right?
Apparently, a lot. It facking merged my bookmarks, history and passwords with hers! And she had shitloads of them! It took me facking hours to clean up the mess chrome created. I trust her, but I still didn't want her to have my passwords etc.
Omg I'm never logging into chrome again elsewhere, what a frustrating facking waste of time10 -
The coffee at my work sucks! :(
Recently, the coffee machine was broken and a better one was installed until the other one got fixed. It made decent coffee, but now we're back to drinking piss. Teasing!2 -
Worst experience of my teachers?
I had handed in an exercise, which the teacher ostensibly thought was so elegant that he wanted to show it in class. I felt complimented and recognized. But then he proceeded to show the code on the screen, and I objected: "this is not my code, don't give me credit for this piece of shit". It had written-by-said-teacher all over it, because his coding style includes mysterious omnipresent acronyms that you could never guess the meaning of. My peers didn't believe me and thought I had written said not-so-elegant code, and the fuss about it degraded my reputation.
To this day I'm wondering as to why he humiliated me like that. He probably had best intent, but I don't get it -
How do I keep improving as a dev?
By reading blogs (what a dull answer damn). But I really liked CodingHorror, JoelOnSoftware and Jon Skeet's. But they've all become stale :(3
