This is a view from a rooftop in NYC that I sometimes get the pleasure to work from. I really like the view and it’s pretty quiet usually. It also overlooks one of my favorite buildings, the Empire State Building.
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone else’s desks, setups, and remote/outdoor workspaces.
We’ll be featuring them on our recently launched devRant Instagram account, devDesks (https://www.instagram.com/devdesks).35 -
Who says a dev doesn't go outside? I barely stay somewhere indoor more than a couple of hours.
Now that everyone is sharing their setups:32 -
Before you're hired:
1. A binary tree?
2. Currying?
3. Higher-order function?
4. How does event loop work?
5. What is prototype?
6. What is encapsulation?
7. Can you draw an algorithm?
After you're hired:
1. Hey, can you add auth token and login to our app?11 -

Me : it's no one important.
She : Checks WhatsApp, message from CTO, server crashed.
Me : Umm, darling, I need to fix this.
It's been 2 days she hasn't answered my call after she left.15 -

So, our clients missed their internal deadline this weekend so we as vendor were also forced to work for the weekend and implement new features in a very short period. I implemented new features and my project manager stayed to support the testing and sent me home as I already had tickets bought for the movie.
As someone who hasn't done any developing in a long long time he even tried to implement some changes and complex JavaScript dom manipulation that they asked during testing so that I could be with my gf.
Few hours later he called me and with a sad voice said he is simply too slow and needs my help after all . I came and we stayed until 00h and solved everything. He paid for the movie and taxi.
The thing that impressed me was that he was willing to took over my job so that I wouldn't break my deal.
Best project manager ever!
P.S. Yes my gf went alone at the movie and yes we are still together xD4 -
Probably the first one to get kickass devDucks! Thanks @dfox for hand delivering them. You always make sure that I have swags before everyone. Ducks are amazing and great great great quality. Duck currently I’ve on my desk gonna feel jealous now!5

Non-developers (especially factory workers) don't understand the stress a developer goes through. They say: "What stress could you possibly have? You just sit with your ass behind a computer".
Yeah.. don't get me started.15 -
TL;DR: Tech companies. Don't ask for loyalty if you don't care about your people.
> I'm a gud Dev (and a gud boi).
> The company assing me a cool project.
> The company promised pay me the training. about that suite. They didn't.
> I finish the project and i'd accomplish the task with more effectivity than excepted.
> My company won an interview about "the success case of the implemented software and its integration with our software". They denied me the chance to fly and go to the meet. Instead they will send another guy...
> I asked for a "salary adjust" cos I'm finishing my engineering degree and my good work. They declined.
> Next day I'd present my volunteer job resignation within 15 days (because laws demands that). I have a better job option with +20% my actual salary and a lot of benefits. And they needs me ASAP.
> Everybody look at me shocked and if I am a traitor.
What the f!$-k they did expect?
My unconditional loyalty?

Fighting against management is my daily struggle.
I reject the notion that more management, meetings and reports makes me work faster.
Want it done in time?
Stop wasting my time and interrupting me when I'm deep in complex thought. Let me do what's necessary and put in the hours if I have the energy and time.
But you damn better pay me for it.
I do not care for your praise, when I make the impossible happen time and again in days that would take months.
I expect your praise in the form of higher numbers going into my account.4 -
That moment you realise why you enjoy the dev life again.
It's been a long time since I've had a solid day of coding, just coding..., no meetings, no wild requests, no crazy issues, no data fixing because someone can't type a number correctly, just me, myself and that keyboard going on a field trip of quality coding time again.
Ah, it's a good day to end the week on!rant holy shit no meetings no problems lack of bau devlife those feels straight code quality code time back to the old days3 -

My manager is so cool at work that he doesn't care if I sleep during office hours or even skip working for a couple of days as long as I meet the deadlines. All he cares about is getting the work done and keeping his team happy.
I abso-frigging-lutely respect him very much and like him as a person.
Unlike my friends' managers in other departments, he wouldn't assign me more work if I finished a project before the deadline.
I wish all the managers in all the companies realise work-life balance is important and act like him.10 -

So the story start like this, 6 months ago i left my job in a big company for an oportunitiy to work on a new one without all the bureocracy and shit and with better benefits , the first months were wonderful we were using a nice stack of technologies and the team that was assembled was a nice one with smart and hard working people with a few exceptions, but overall very good. One day out of the blue the manager started to presure us to release a project that was on time and wanted us to make extra hours and work on saturdays, sadly we blindly did because we cared for what we were creating, fast forwarding to yesterday, the whole team was called to a meeting and our contracts were terminated without previous advice because the company could not afford to pay us for more time and blahblahblah..., soo here i'm feeling used and sad but with renowed feelings about starting my own business!!20
-
Worst realisation of myself when I was a greenhorn dev? Nobody gives a f***ing damn of what you achieve as a software developer. For them you're just the uncool nerd - end of story. That's where I just stopped having any conversations about my job at all... unless it's with other devs.10

I love to work in pubs/bars, this special kind of noisy environment works so well for me. I even go "into the zone".
Lets talk about this. Is anyone else the same? Just curious.
These are my 6 reasons:
0) Beer. 🍺
1) None of the activity in a bar actually interests to me, if you know what I mean. In my house, every single noise/movement will get my attention.
2) After some time all the noise blends into a kind of "homogeneous hearing blurb". Like a mantra. Maybe there are even white/pink/brown noise benefits (guess).
3) I go to places where I enjoy the music and atmosphere.
4) I like bars and pubs anyways. I feel good in these places.
5) Beer. 🍺7 -
If you are a father and you find out your kind produced a pile of shit, you change the diaper and get rid of it all. No questions asked.
If you are a developer and your colleague produces pile of shit and you try to get rid of it, you end up in meetings how this piece if shit is actually master piece of shit and have to argue about it to manager that knows shit about a shit.2 -
Aah my father, programmer, when I was in primary school and he told me "don't be a programmer in life, it's an infinite pain in the ass". Aaah I should have listened to him1

After 4 years of professional programming the most important thing that I learned is "user is stupid".
Once I modified old code that was summing salaries (I added extra column to the result), nothing else. My result was rejected because all salaries was empty. Period of data was from first day of the month from user selected date to user selected date. It turned out that user was selecting 27th day of the month (it was 27th then). I responded that salaries have full month period, and you'll have to choose end of the month... And then shitstorm began, that I messed up previous functionality. I tried to explain, but it wasn't working. It ends up with user selecting any date and I'm doing end-of-the-month in the background^^
It's my first rant, welcome to you all :)4 -
Help. I'm drowning in spaghetti code
I've been working at a working student (15 hours/ week) at a local software company for about a month now... and with everything I learned at college I'm kind of getting eye cancer here.
We still use SVN
We don't have any coding guidelines. No checkstyle, no overview over the program. When I started there I was just giving a ticket and they said good luck.
We just have some basic RCPTT Tests inside Eclipse and most of Themen don't work in the trunk because the gui got changed...
At least we have a ticket system but it doesn't get used by most of the working students.
I found 10 other bugs while reproducing and trying to fix 1 bug.
And I've never seen Java raped so badly. Today I saw a line that started with 6 brackets because whoever wrote it wanted to cast like there was no tomorrow. I see more instanceof in one day than in my whole devlife before.
The only thing we have is two normal employees that review our code before we are allowed to commit it into the trunk.
So yeah... I'm drowning in spaghetti-code.2 -
I have never been so stressed out when programming, I am at a place with no electricity and no running water I'm here for a week and my laptop has 4 hours of battery life, Every second counts!4

Two days ago I was so close to being single again. Reason? I was in the zone when my fiancée called, the ring of the phone jarred me so much that I contemplated smashing the phone at the wall. I didn't but just turned it off. I guess she must have called a couple more times because when we finally spoke she was so angry that she threatened to get her stuff from my place. Luckily I later got back in the zone, and luckier still, I have a girlfriend.8

Today I realized that a project that Ive worked on for years is now redundant and will probably be scrapped after my own new and more effective process hits production.
Im happy about that, no matter how good and hours spent. I made something better to replace it. This must be what finding a New gf after divorce feels like.1 -
Even though I have 500 reputation on StackOverflow I'm afraid to ask a question! Coz other devs can be really down right mean! No one knows everything, we are all here to learn. Some ppl don't understand that they too started like this.2

That one client who feels entitled to immediate feedback and response from you, yet they're not paying you on retainer and know good and well that you have other clients. Then they get condescending in their emails and cop an attitude when you (nicely I might add) advise them to find another developer if they want people to micro manage.
Yeah, I just fired that client. Not dealing with this anymore. Good thing about being a contractor is that you have the freedom to walk and have a backup plan. And if they try to come back, I'm hiking the rates if I even take them back at all.
😎✌️ -
Heeeyyy, who likes to lay down in bed melancholically browsing the internet because they went to bed too early as a consequence of burnout?9

Current workload as dev lead:
- 1% actual development
- 2,5% waiting for SaaS to load
- 2,5% cursing company server network connectivity issues
- 5% switching VPNs
- 7,5% pkg management & deploys
- 10% writing JIRA and support tickets
- 12,5% filling in timesheets
- 15% coaching & reviewing a bot coworker
- 19% doing 2FA, refreshing expired passwords
- give up and spend the remaining 25% doing something meaningful8 -
The marketing dept comes to me and ask for an important project to be done ASAP. Builds pressure on my PM to get it done fast. After I complete it, I ask them to complete UAT to make sure it is what they wanted so we can go live. They seem to not have enough time to test it. After one month the whole dept gets divested! Is this common or I am unlucky? They never used that very important app ever!!😢😠2

Most web developers don't seem to care at all about ecological footprint and UX/UI impact on people and society, like they never cared about accessibility either, desperately dreaming to work for the Californian oligopoly companies that shaped our current digital infrastructure.
Meanwhile, rivers run dry, forest are burning, people starving and soldiers killing people.
But politics is taboo, even on devrant. Let's post a funny thank-God(?!)-it's-Friday GIF animation instead!?
What kind of people do we want to be?14 -
If you want to be a dev, don't buy a house. Or if you do buy a house don't do DIY. Or if you do the DIY, do it badly so you don't have to do it again.

Pseudo-flexible working hours suck. I get the "choice" to start work between 7:30-9:30 AM. I'm a night owl so waking up at 6AM is not an option. Why can't they just allow to start at 10AM and finish at 6:30PM? Between 7:30 & 9:30 is peak rush hour and I'm bound to lose 1h30 in traffic for 30km (normally it would take half an hour) and start my workday pissed off.6

I was like dude wtf call your senior why its not working .. everything is correct.. then suddenly my eyes catch the rubbish thing I did..
this is what I used mistakenly for assignment "=="
:( and I was looking at statement from 1-2 hour.. it just wasted my time3 -
Is there a scientific term for *that* window of time where you feel totally unproductive before or after a call/standup? How long is it for you?5
-
It has now become trend for all new startups in my country to follow these three steps.
Step 1 - Attract developers by showing them high CTC.
Step 2 - Make them work mercilessly on intern basis giving them low pay.
Step 3 - Fire them after intern period without giving some valid reasons.
I am fed up now as I have wasted my six months without getting much pay and now I am jobless 😨5 -
I got randomly PIP’ed by this small company I was working at. They claimed performance issues without referring to specifics so I’m sure it was a financial issue (I’m paid more than other devs). So I took the laptop home and claimed I broke my back and started working from home (they don’t appreciate WFH). I did this so that I can freely give interviews. And now after 2 weeks I got 4 offers (with more than 50% hike). I’ve started the necessary documentation work and communicated my last working day with my current company.
So what is the moral of this story? Creative comments only.2 -
How do you feel when in the middle of tight deadline, your client calls you and tells you that he has changed some little detailing in the requirements, like naming, color schema etc. This needs to be done within the deadline. You tell yes and tell him to send email.
After receiving the email, you find out it's not little it's bag of new features listing.
Now either you have to overwork or let the client go....2 -
There should be dev equivalent to the expression "tip of my tongue". You know, when you're trying to implement a feature or fix a bug and you have a fuzzy idea of how to do it and only missing the final piece to put all of it together.3

Prof - Students, from now If someone asks you what you did yesterday, explain every minute detail of the task... Use fluent English, use rich vocabulary and MOST IMPORTANTLY -- if you were not able to complete your plans, make sure the other person knows it wasn't UR MISTAKE.... Don't forget to call out things that u asked for but will be delayed due to "unavoidable circumstances".
Make sure you take atleast 2 mins to finish. At the end greet everyone by saying "That's it".

Developing front-ends used to be about translating a business use case to an interface. Now I spend days and weeks getting tooling to integrate properly: webpack, babel, React, Vue, SSR, Nuxt, NPM packages, build & CI pipelines, storybooks, and resolving incompatibilities. It's become such a grind I haven't had a single satisfying, productive workday since 4 months.2
-
I suck at DevOps at least as hard as I'm good at front-end/UX. I found out as a result of the local job market starting to get needy for 'full-stack'. Stuck for 2 days on setting up a Docker/ Dockerhub/ DigitalOcean/ Bitbucket pipeline with Nginx/ Node/ MongoDB Cloud & Webpack/ React.
*Sigh*1 -
Finding an awesome new library / framework then finding the documentation is all "this is what it is" rather than "this is how you use it" *sigh*2

I just hope I find it along the way. 🙃2 -
'It's just...' is the biggest lie any co-dev can give you!

It is ok to fail and commit mistakes, that's part of the game, specially for beginner devs. Just avoid failing alone, the most you can!
I mean:
- Ask people to review your code before pushing to the source repository.
- If you are not sure how to do, ask.
- Never work in production environments without supervision. Pair with someone.
- Have a desk mate for rubberducking (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...) and blame it in case you need -
Wrote a script for mail merge with app script works flawless on my account, then that shit gives message blocked error with the clients account.
I think this is what they say a devlife1 -
As a JS developer I wish that when I import a package, a list of all the Jquery methods comes shipped with it 🥺12

Year 1.5 into my first job and three bosses and several teammates have already left the company. Not sure why. Is this how shit works in general?4

I was not able to wake up on time, even the alarm was not helping.
So, I made a project for hours..
Searched for all the bugs...
solved all of them EXCEPT for one , which was the easiest one... then I went to bed
Next day I woke up before timing of alarm :)2 -
I am going to start a random stuff from dev life diary just for your annoyance… cause I’m bored (and kind of want to see how long I can be bothered to keep shit like this going)
So, work day 1 for 2022. Wrote TS and YAML. Yay, IaC is fun. Also, no one has bothered me with dms or calls or any such shite today, which is the way I like it. Leave me be, mofos!
Should still bother to prepare all the shit for tomorrow’s PoC spec planning workshop… what a chore. Couldn’t be bothered, I’d much rather someone else did the specs and I could skip to design and implementation. But I guess this is yet another context where I have to do it all myself. Woo hoo…2 -
ran the test before fixing an issue
result: 5 failures, 0 errors
ran the test after fixing the issue
result: 4 failures, 11 errors
all errors in one place -
That moment when you use a template to save time, only to spend days debugging code that someone else messed up. #devLife

Hi.. How are you doing devs?
Me.. I was lot busy cause my company decided to end working from home.. and office environment sucked Like My shift got changed from 2 to 10 .. But our all employee request for permanent work from home.. I am glad that I am on now permanently working from home..
Suggest me some good ways to utilize this opportunity..:)1 -
I am kinda feel broken these days :( Not even have energy to do anything... I have experience of 6 years but feeling like nothing gonna happen. Learning any tech will be waste of time.. Just wants to run away from my life and spent some time to travel but then who is gonna take care of my bills :(
Fuck this coding shit.. I am feeling like fresher again :( except this time I can't compromise with my salary . I wish me luck for upcoming year 20232 -
so one of our managers sent me an email what has to be changed in our FAQ section which runs on WP...
but then i remembered, our cleaning lady had a surgery and wasn't here for a week, maybe she will not come for another week and the kitchen is already starting to get real smelly...
so i created a user for our manager and sent him the credentials to his brand new WP editor account so he can make his changes and went to wash the dishes instead

Being a developer for 6+ years in many different stacks, and moving up to a kinda lead level position, has made me feel like I’m not working as much as I was doing before.
Yeah I do code reviews, meetings, tech documentations and peer coding sessions, but still doesn’t give me the feel like I did the work I was supposed to do.
Anyone ever felt this and any tips to overcome?3 -
Any devs here from Canada or who have worked there?... know any?
I'm strongly considering immigrating to Canada to give my future family a better chance at life (My current country has a highly unstable political climate).
Just wondering how the dev lifestyle is living there (for the average dev) i.e.
- Quality of life - I know I can't buy a house, but what can I rent? A house/ flat/ box?
- Hows the dev scene / culture?
- Work life balance / Work environment frustrations (I hear they are very politically correct and this may be a conflict with my blunt nature)
- Income Tax vs Government service delivery, I expect tax will be high due to free health care/ education but are they worth it? nb; any service delivery beats what I get...
Any feedback is welcome and will be appreciated.16 -
Homework for Informatics: Create a Powerpoint about yourself...

When my mom asked what would I like to have - sweet corn or Avacado.
I said - Let's document all the possible approaches and setup some time to discuss pros and cons.2 -
Programming lesson #8
Nowadays I write tasks for the next day at the end of my shift in the sticky notes app.
That way it's easier to start off for the next day without trying to remember what tasks were remaining from the previous day.
If tasks are greater in number then it's good to go for external task tracking tools. But for me keeping track of just 2-3 tasks is easier by using simple sticky notes app.2 -
This simple task will finish in the next 10 minutes I thought...
4 hours later it is just in workable condition and still needs to be tested for bugs...🥺 -
I can't keep a good alimentation when I'm working, I keep buying those bad-qualities salads and stuff that make me feel sick.
What do you eat when you're at work ?2 -
Managers fucking fun activity. They're taking it away from meeting room. Shouting down the hall. I pinged my HR.
Me: How can one code with this noice
HR: I understand. You even have a typo with 'noise'
Shit fuck, here goes my weekend. I have to revisit what have I coded today 😠2 -
My social life is currently mosty consisting of being social with computers, therefore my socialLife and devLife are pretty much balanced.
-
What frustrates me 'most' in coding is, putting comments...🙄🙄🙄
The frustration seems to go more than the 'most', when I don't find them and wonder, what the heck! 😠😠😠8 -
Second day I lack sleep, girls consuming my evenings with their bla bla, debugging dosbox games and why some won't work, having to perform at work, breaking my body at gym, cooking complex meals..
I feel physically ill of stress..4 -
I am feeling low in my life. It's like everything i am doing feels worthless, like there is no point in it. There is always someone better than me in this.
How can i surpass my limits.? Anybody5 -
My colleague, while debugging a bug:
If (var == 3)
{
printf("colleague name var=%d",var);
//existing piece of code
}
I asked why are you printing the variable value here.
He: "just in case"
He is 3 months more experienced and got promoted last December. Mine is delayed. I met my PM.
PM: You aren't this, You aren't that...
What I heard:
*You aren't licking my boots*1 -
Asked for Git repo details and my manager replied, “Let’s discuss and close this in the office tomorrow.” I guess Git and patience both require good branching strategies! 🤦♂️1

Corporate -> Startup -> Corporate
Well this corporate is based in France and has a better reputation so hopefully my time here will be better -
I’m a Frontend developer and my wife is Quality assurance Lead. We never tend to agree on things even personal. But with time I stepped up and developed negotiation skills. Now things are getting better 🙂1
-
I went remote a year ago and have had the constraint fear of losing my job, even though I know for a fact that there are other devs who do less work than me and slump around more than me. Never want to go back to office life again though.1
-
Really frustrating is when business asks you to finish large tasks in an unreasonable amount of time (4-8 hours). As a Medior developer, my speed is not at hours, but at days/weeks. Perhaps if I were a Senior with absolute mastery I could achieve such speeds.
They don't seem to understand programming takes a lot of thinking, testing, debugging and communicating, which not always necessarily sync. Some people are busy and others are jerks.3 -
I'm working on a pretty big dataviz project. There was supposed to be a deadline at the end of the month for a first full demo.
This morning I wake up to an email from the client saying the deadline moved to next Monday and they just "forgot to tell me before".
Also, the dev from the client's company who is supposed to prepare the data/API to be used for the project said he'll be able to send something at the end of the week.
They're clearly not going to get what they want for Monday...2 -
2nd day of deployment!
Till now its going smooth; server configured + tables migration is ON!
PS: Migrating old site to new ;)1 -
When you started your career as a developer and did your first feature implementation which will be hands on thousands of people across the world FEELS GOOD MAN. 😎
What's your first feature implementation devRant's ??? -
I think it's a bad sign when you walk out of a meeting thinking:
"Wow finally a meeting that wasn't a complete waste of time and didn't make me want to (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ "
*sigh*1 -

Out of nowhere my directive stops working... Didn't change anything there in die last weeks.😥
No console Errors and no console log entries i added.
Why? 😥 -
I've been on a new project since last week.
After 3 days of knowledge transmission and really nothing else, the PM walked in and ask me when the project will be finished...
Really?! Jumping in a totally new project, with tools and functionals aspect I've never seen and then this.
:thumbs up: everything gonna be ok -
Any wordpress developer?
I have some question.
1. How many years you are working?
2. Are you freelancer or what?
3. How much earned from your job?
4. In which country?
5. Tell about job future8 -

So I was playing around with JS inside of QML (Qt). I wanted to turn a number into a string and then modify individual chars based on certain criteria. Then I would convert back to a number. Should be simple right? Well JS would not let me write to the indexed element of the string. What the actual fuck? I need to drop to C++ to do actual string manipulation? I ended up looping the string and turning it into an array and then a join back to a string. There is probably a better way to do this in a more modern version of JS, but I am now starting to see why JS is a pariah on here. It has some quirks that make you question your devlife choices.
What was I working on? Some stupid crop circle thingy. I was trying to use the QML Canvas to draw some "simple" crop circles. So I started with this crop circle:
https://plus.maths.org/content/...
The result ended up being kind of a swirling crop circle thing. The static image was too boring:

And yes, I was too lazy/cheap to license the screen capture program.7 -
Happy B day me and all of devranters who share the same and all the oozein boozin and devlifing for evreyone2

Last night I dreamt of nothing but meetings and troubleshooting my app. On the plus side I feel like a true Dev now, on the minus side I don't remember a single solution I had.

TFW you have to ask if Google is ACTUALLY down, or if you messed up your local network settings and cut yourself off from half of the Internet again.1

Last day at work. Bored. Sad. Waiting for an API call to fail so that I can fix it. #guilty #notsoguilty #devlife

What's best about being a dev?
that most of our work is done by the skillful use of google and we still seem like geniuses to "ordinary" folks.
Therefore to answer the question: http://lmgtfy.com//... -
Why is it always the case when you give your cide to QA they find more bugs than you? Even though developers write test cases, why can't we catch them all?4
-
Stayed up all night to work up till 4am on a weekday to finish off some work stuff. Still, got told the next day you're exceeding deadlines smh.6

it seems currently in android studio , it can't differentiate between file extension. That's why it's giving duplicate resource error during app release build , while both files extension are different.1

Getting bored!!! Suggest me some good things to do except scrolling linkedin or any social media..15

Any advicess from those are in long run being dev2 -
What is your favourite track that helps you get in the zone for marathon coding sessions? Mine is Megadeth's She-Wolf on repeat.5

Starting new job, moving to new location, and trying to finish five massive projects.... "You want me to take over development of that entire stack? Sure I've got time!"2

Today " It's not a bug it's a feature" became true. Had an escalation where user reported as a bug. Team came up with an answer they couldn't resist to accept it as a feature. 😎1

I am thinking of getting a pine64 phone from people who know more about it than me should I
PS.I plan to use it as a portable developing machine for places I cant take my laptop4 -
Monday my last exam (maths)...
Will be happy if it’s finished. Will be able to continue developing apps.2 -
A simple sequence error made me suffer for 2 hour . Normally we think location sequence works as lat then long. But for mapbox ,they work in reverse.

I have recently come across jupyter notebooks it's pretty cool I'm wondering if it is something that I should be using a long-term? Or is there another tool I should look at but I am quite interested halving interactive notebooks?

Any Elixir devs out there ?
I started learning Elixir to explore distributed computing.
