Just want to recommend the DevRant stress ball. I wasn't quite sure how to use it (it doesn't come with instructions) but since stuffing mine down the PM's throat my stress level has reduced dramatically.4
-
I got my reward stress ball about a week ago, but it vanished within minutes of opening the package 😧
Today I found out who had taken it.17 -
Me: Hi, how can i help you today?
User: Hi IT, I can't enter to my computer, i put my password and it says it's incorrect.
Me: Ok, hold me a few.
(10 seconds without do anything)
Me: Try again.
User: It worked! Thanks!!2 -
"So what got you in to development and programming?"
Me: well. I needed something to new to help with my depression, stress and anger.
"Oh cool. Did it help?"
Me: yes... They're so much stronger now.4 -
Everytime I throw my stress ball (and miss...because sports are hard) at a co-worker, they ALWAYS think I'm throwing an orange at them.8

I NEED A FUCKING STRESS BALLundefined fucking fuck shit stress tissue broken tissues i need a stress ball stressball stress ball31

Ripped through the letter in excitement while opening the parcel :(

*me seeing rant with stress ball in the pic*
Me to gf:"look babe!!! Streeeeesssssballllllll :D I want one"
*gf points at shirt*:"these are your stress balls ;)"5 -
One of the important lessons I learnt in DevRant.
"You don't choose the free stress ball, the stress ball chooses you."5 -
It's very much fun to stress test one of your own servers and see how well it handles huge traffic loads 😊23
-
Everyone has their stress balls, cubes, pillows, spinners etc.
Only what I have is my stress table
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻4 -
You is not gonna beliebers what just happened lol
So a couple weeks ago I earned a stress ball (300+ ++'s) I sent an email about it but never got a reply, so I decided to just forget about it. But then I just ranted (lastnight) about how its so hard to get a stressball. So I basically just said "fuck it i'll buy one". Then some dude comes along and is like "omg not until he shows us the bought one" so I'm like CHALLENGE ACCEPTED and buy one...
Then I get an email confirmation from devrant store confirming my order for the bought stressball. And I notive that my spam folder has unread messages in it. i look inside the spam folder and what do I see?...
I see dfox replying to my free stressball request weeks ago lol. So yay, now I gets the 3 balls (or two - depending) lol omg, so many balls.15 -
"I want blah blah blah and I need it now! There's a commercial expression called TIME TO MARKET!"
And there's a programming expression called TIME TO DEVELOPMENT, you stupid brick.2 -
It's funny. I've been doing this work for about 6 weeks now my 'I don't give a fuck' level on some issues/subjects is rising.
By the way, this is only with things that aren't wrong on our side.
Man, the stress relieve!3 -
I need a break.
A break from stress of endless expectations
From school
From work
From being made fun of
From criticism
From criticizing myself
From not being able to do fun things
From vague instructions
From a lack of sleep
from inconsistency.
From unclear objectives
From financial/medical/emotional stress
From life
From hatred
From destruction of my emotional stability
From a lack of confidence
From unfulfilled decisions
From trying to hide under a mask
From jealousy
From lists
From repetitive obliteration of any hope I have
From me crap talking myself
From pleasing people
Oh well, at least after tomorrow, I’m on full-time break...12 -
Non-developers (especially factory workers) don't understand the stress a developer goes through. They say: "What stress could you possibly have? You just sit with your ass behind a computer".
Yeah.. don't get me started.15 -
So it turns out that the company I work for uses and develops for Linux just because, I quote, "IT'S IMMUNE TO VIRUSES!!!".
Even if our systems are not connected to the internet (and never will be) and protected by armed guards.
I am stunned.5 -
I think if I ever got a stress ball I would end up throwing it at people who cause me stress instead of using it for its intended purpose4

Reached 100+1 on a single rant...
Devrant raised to 150 +1's in order to receive the stress ball...2 -
Couldn't get stress ball from devRant.. But I found one at work.. Now it's mine 😀
After 5 min with it, my stress levels dropped and productivity also..2 -
This is just like me when I play with my baby niece to remove some stress from work. Effectively recharges me and can code again even if I'm tired29

Everyone seems to have a stress ball, I have a stress dice that says "Yes", "No", "Take a break", "Tomorrow" and "Maybe". It's good for whenever I don't know I should just quit or throw the PC through the window 😅9

Back in the days DevRant used to be a small community. A rant would be seen by all, with a higher chance of marking the stress ball incentive target.
Now, those upvotes are distributed among many more users who have the privilege of upvoting to what they find more interesting.
However, this is not a rant about who has a better chance of winning a stress ball; it's about feeling proud how this community grew so healthy, and tailor made for developers!! :)
Kudos! I love this community6 -

Describe your stress level in one sentence.
I'll kick it off:
"If he sends me one more passive aggressive email, or moronic statement, I will hit him with my chair until he stops moving"3 -
Thanks everyone for giving me enough ++ to get my very own stress ball, also a special thanks zuckABird. If it wasn't for your data collecting madness i would of missed out. Ha3
-
My stickers came, thanks @dfox and @trogus! 😄
Now to pull off getting a stress ball. That's gonna be tough... help me out folks! 😨11 -
First day back. I am a junior Dev a year and a half of work.
I get in after Christmas break and find people standing around my desk turns out all senior staff (except CEO and PM who are both non-technical ) are away and an email. Basically saying it's up to me for the next week to manage people.
FU&£&# what the heck I don't have a clue what I am doing and I can't mange if I could I would be a manager pays better. So I designate to people took me an hour to figure out what people can actually get on with. Then PM wants a break down of the plan. Then meeting with CEO over the importance of these projects and told 'politely' shortest deadline to date most work, get it done the company depends on these projects if you don't well it would be the end of you.
Get back to my desk people need work I should be getting on with to do theirs but I have been busy in silly meetings and litrually every 5 mins get nagged 'have I done it yet'. But as I am about done they discover what they should have been working on is doable without my work. I don't shake but at one point today I was shaking so much with nerves I couldn't type. Had a very short lunch and stayed on late sorting people problems out. (Thankfully the even more junior people are nice and 1 did help me at one point today I'm so great full for the help)
I'm a junior no training in the technologies I work with not even before starting the job. £3 million+ worth of projects and possible future client resting on my shoulders... (Thankfully the real project lead and senior members are back next week although won't be long left till deadline) Wtf ...
Anyone got a job going I want out!5 -
Just a friendly reminder to fellow developers to take care of yourself.
If your system is constantly pumping out cortisol, even when threats are minor, it gets desensitized to the stress signals. We used to react to cortisol with the fight-or-flight response when our lives were in real danger. Nowadays it's produced when you disagree with your coworker or there's a deadline coming up. So your cortisol rises but you neither fight nor run. The result is a stress response that isn't functioning properly. This is when burnout symptoms develop. Same goes for testosterone, dopamine and some other hormones and neurotransmitters. Read up and start proper work hygiene that includes workouts, fresh air activities and manual hobbies.
Your back, wrists and eyes aren't the only things you have to watch out for when coding long hours. Cheers and have a fun weekend!6 -
At the end of each work day, once I am sitting down, I take a moment to do a little stress relief exercise.
I get in my car, make sure all doors/windows are shut, make sure the coast is clear, and I yell at the top of my lungs.
The relief is almost instant. And even if it was a good day, sometimes a good, loud yell can just help to relieve any build up tension, anxiety, or stress you may not have known you were under. Give it a try (:2 -
Someday I will have a rant that gets enough ++ to get a stress ball. Until that day I will keep taking out my stress on my poor mouse. At least I hardly ever use it so it doesn't matter if I break it...
-
Somebody else like me? Waiting for that beautifully crafted rant/meme/pic/joke that will bring me a stress ball.9

So.... yeah, making a Scratch clone (with more features) is frustrating and super hard.
Major problems include
- Drag&Drop from listbox to usercontrol - stress level : 3/10
- connect blocks when two blocks are close to each other - stress level : 10/10
- generate live code when there was a change in blocks editor - stress level : 9/10
- write a compiler or some interpreter that converts block code to real c# code - stress level : 10/10
- generate output by calling csc.exe - stress level : 1/10
- make code at least readable - stress level : 7/1014 -
Went to the mall with mom the other day,
Mum: so what do you want?
Me: (pointing to stress ball) that ball
Mum: stop embarrassing us, are you a kid?
Me: they are stress balls
Mum: take a pill or exercise if you stressed
My mind: I told you not to go the mall with your, fucking kid....

Stress balls are awesome.
Never thought they are this effective.
Like just throwing it and kicking it around in my apartment makes me feel a bit better.8 -
Until last night I didn't realize Christmas is next week. This new realisation have had an dramatic effect on my work ethic. Time spent watching cat videos have plummeted.

!dev I guess
Stress and anxiety are bitches. I'm sure that mostly everyone here already knows that. Sometimes life is just a fucking mess, and no matter what you do, it just gets worse and worse.
Personally, shit's just gotten so bad lately. A bit more than a year ago life was shit and I started pulling out my hair, then I noticed I had a bald spot after about a week and I did everything I could to stop. Managed to stop, until recently. Right now I have a fair sized bald patch right on the top of my head after about a month of pulling. At least I have long hair (about chest length) so I can just put it up to cover the spot.
This community has been the thing keeping me sane lately and I just wanted to thank you guys for just doing what you do. I'm a fucking mess and just need an outlet11 -

Just casually learning if I don't fix a bunch of stuff I know nothing about in a technology I have never touched within 2 weeks the company loses a 100k contract.
Should book holiday.5 -
I think I might get close to a burnout. Last week was extremely stressful because of a deadline and I worked 45 hours in 4 days. Even in the evening my heart is pounding like a coke addict who had his last nose 1 hour ago.
What is your personal way of dealing with (work related) stress?
What activities help you best to cool down and relax?
I've not yet tried meditation but am trying to take some time to regularly do sport after the work, hopefully it helps.6 -
This career is so stressful. Who the hell thought of bringing our product to customers just before Christmas. Whyy... What did your mother do to you. Jesus f** christ.
How do ya’ll deal with stress at work?6 -
I remember that time when you only needed 200 +1's to get a stress ball and it was achievable in one life, not four.4

Brought a stressball into work today (not a devrant one) and it popped within 10 minutes, of course causing more stress.

Loving the community here I wish more people I know personally knew about DevRant hence why I just bought myself a stress ball. Hoping that someone at work might notice it!5 -
The day I was only one ++ away from getting the stress ball.
Decided not to claim it in the end, though.7 -
@dfox we need like an automatic email reply when we email about stickers/stress ball because I'm waiting unsure if you got my email. I'll just keep waiting patiently I guess...5

Question: is it common to a developer to have lots of tasks to do at the same time, so you don't have sure what you need to do first, specially when you have 2 or more urgent projects?
That is one of the things I most hate on managing.8 -
I love the irony that the devrant stress ball my co-worker just received is the beginning of my stress.... bounce bounce bounce AHHHH!2
-
My first Project is finally ready to be deployed on prod server.... Nervous.... How u guys cope with this stress?10
-
Feeling so dumb right know.
I have a C# exam tomorrow (on paper) and i can't get my brain to think in code.
I can't focus, I can't concentrate. I don't remember things i normally know by heart. Is it just stress? (Everything is pretty hard atm, lots of stress, lots of problems).
What could i do? I'm pretty messed up right now...13 -
When your happy your rant has enough votes to earn you a stress ball only to realize that they raised the limit since the last time you checked...6
-
I'm starting a new job in a month!
I'm simultaneously excited and anxious about it.
Excited because I get to work on some new cool projects, use new tech, get great pay and benefits, and it really seems like a great place for me.
Anxious because I am currently on sick leave with stress, because my current job wore me down. Not so much the tasks themselves, but the atmosphere and attitude of management. So I have to hope that I can manage to get enough rest in the coming month that I am well enough to perform well at my new job.4 -
well, here's my achievement for today! @localhost this is all I do on a Sunday 😂
when you know that you can't get a stress ball(150 ++'s 😱) , make the rant feed your stress ball! 🤓1 -
I have come to realize that my stress comes from how inefficient my clients use their tech.
I have to stop caring. Is it up? Is it running? Good. That should be where my investment ends.
I shouldn't fear a heart attack or stroke because of some clients' inefficiency.
IT'S JUST SO DAMN HARD. -
Had my junior test at work yesterday, and...oh boy. I don't think I've ever been so stressed in my life.
>inb4 "welcome to the real world kid"
Yeah yeah I know but god damn, this was too much. I heard from seniors that you get used to everyday stress, it comes with the job, but junior test ( aka "stress test") is the breaking point for most "new" arrivals.
The test itself tho is not even that hard. Dealing with so much stress and time pressure for the first time is what gets you. Not knowing what happens if you don't pass certainly doesn't help.
I broke down at one point and even after finishing, going home (got no sleep) and coming back today, that feeling of hopelessness is still there.
No real point to this rant, I just needed to vent6 -
I am as sure as I am of anything that the software I am working in is sentient and pulling the long con on me to kill me over the course of my career via stress. Joke's on it though. With the amount of drinking I do to cope with the stress I will die of alcoholism way before I die of stress. Take that. Victory is mine.1
-
So they give us a stress ball if a rant gets that many "upvotes". I find that really stressful, waiting and waiting.. And never get there. In the end of the day we are stressed af and with no stress ball 😂.
But hey, who da hell get stressed for this little? We devs are already stress free...3 -
One of my most inspirational places to create devRant rants! I visit it every week. For a Sunday fun experiment I will gift the first person to guess where it is a devRant 'devie' stress ball or t-shirt. You must provide specific details. We can figure out prize logistic details thru @dfox. There are hints in the image 😀 Enjoy!16

I DROPPED MY HARD DRIVE ENCLOSURE WITH MY ONLY BACKUP ON IT ONTO BRICK AND NOW IT MOUNTS.
WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING7 -
How does one handle stress? I’ve got way too much on my plate... I’ve never puked before due to stress and anxiety until recently.10
-
When your one rant that showed real potential to get you that stress ball has now slowed. Each new upvote revives the hope and you think - c'mon c'mon, nearly there!8
-
I read an article that says stress balls are far less effective for stress relief than punching your PM on the face.
They should have included a warning... -
So I'm working on this prototype of indie game with two friends. Since we are only 3, I can't just stick to coding only... Problem is, I'm the only one realising that and I've ended up doing all the jobs that are missing... Texturing, a bit of modeling, organizing the whole team, shaders, animating and so on... And the two others just stick to their thing and are confident in the fact that I'll be able to handle all the problems. It pisses me off.
But I need the project to have some base experience, and alone, I would probably melt down under the stress. But every time a problem show up I'm basically alone, and my level of stress skyrocket... Not sure if I have the shoulders to finish it, but I have to. In fact I'm not even to the point of ranting anymore I'm just depressed >.>... At least when I'm working on the code and not the rest, I'm really enjoying myself.
Not sure if I should do something about it ._.2 -
*Screaming Internally* I'm really, REALLY, stressed.
We just entered the final sprint for the finishing of a major project. This is my first "Launch" type achievement since I started working as a programmer(I started almost exactly a year ago)
We have a lot of work done on the project, and it's very clearly near "Completion" but we all know a programmers job is never done.
But specifically I've been thinking about the code i've worked on. I've been at the burnt out phase of the development for a week now, I haven't been getting a lot done, and I can't help but stress that my code is going to be what breaks on launch day and i'm going to get canned or something...
It's not that i'm a bad programmer(at least I don't think) but more or less that I just have been so stressed I think I've made some mistakes, and I think it's going to blow up in my face, and I might lose my job over it.
How do you guys deal with work stress?1 -
Went to Colorado to de-stress, came back with a job offer and more stress. Not sure how I feel about this, but damn it I love Colorado.

Why would anyone think if I’m having less emotion, I’m stress.
For. One. Last. Time!
I’m not stress. I know how to handle stress. Just that I’m emotionally affected by my relationship and thus showing less emotion.

Top challenge of my career?
Balance. Money, stress, learning. I've only ever had 1 or 2 at optimal levels.
Currently have OK salary, not much stress, but not learning much. -
How do you lower the level of stress, without rubber duckies, stess balls and other material stuff?)8
-
Broke up with my girlfriend due to ongoing stress to commit to the relationship, to perform at my current job, graduating early next March, looking for a full time job/studying for interviews, and going to school.
We never really planned long term and we were just in the relationship to have fun, but man do breakups suck.
I want to be able to focus on myself so I can set myself up for greatness in the future. Unfortunately that means sacrifices have to be made so I don’t lose my mind. Oof4 -
I think rubber duck debugging is too old now. The next big thing is stress ball debugging. Squish your ball(s) till you get the solution to your problems.3
-
I wonder how many developers each day rant here to get stickers and stress ball 😝.
Shameless acceptance: I am one of them.3 -
Someone is going to rant about me soon...
There are two types of debugging for me:

- Not that calm!!
So the guy I was helping out handed me a stress ball...4 -
Got my Stress Ball in the mail the other day. It now joins the other items living on my desk at work. :-)3
-
My stress ball has been stolen!
I came in to work to an email alerting me to a bug in production. I copied the site to staging to work on the issue but I was unable to replicate bug. My rubber duck wasn't helping so I went to go bounce my ball off the wall when I realized I don't have a stress ball anymore.
I spent 7 hours working on the bug without a stress ball before finally fixing it. And now I'm ready to deal with the theft the old-fashioned way.3 -
Been over 6 weeks since I was promised the devrant stickers for a post with >20 ups. Didn't get them yet and I am really stressed, so I need a stress ball now.

So today I woke up to a message that my jobs webserver was down; and that all personal webpages for the Uni went down with it. We had no idea why or how it went down but eventually someone got it up- just in time for our Proxmox server to go down; which runs our new web server (thankfully it's not live yet), our print server, our PXE server, and more... Loving today. Such stress. Very shit.
We have a memo on the window "Watch your FPMs" (fucks per minute) -
Do you care about your workplace/employer?
I feel quite a bit of stress, and a good friend of mine told me I "probably do it to myself" (working too hard and/or caring too much)
From him I heard that I care too much about stuff I don't get payed to do.
(Think management and server related stuff while I'm just a web developer)
So my question is either, do you care about what's going on? Do you think nah fuck it? Where do you draw the line?3 -

I wasn't here for a long time, maybe because everything was ok. Until yesterday. One of my friends works for a government organization and they fucked a big database lately and every member was working their ass to fix it. My friend gave all of his current freelance jobs to me. I don't usually do freelance because I don't like working under such stress. For 2 days I've experienced the stress of my year and fuck this shit never ends. EVERY FUCKING TIME I FINISH A FUCKING TASK, NEW ONE APPEARS. I FUCKING HATE IT AND CAN'T STOP IT BECAUSE IT IS NOT MINE OWN. FUCK THIS SHIT I CAME FROM VACATION A WEEK AGO AND NOW I NEED A NEW ONE.2
-
I took 9 days off. Two 3-days long-weekends included.
First long-weekend went in Holi celeberations.
Weekdays went in planning and executing trip to Vaishno Devi.
Second long-weekend went in resting because Vaishno Devi is a hiking pilgrimage of a total of 30+ kms and 650+ kms away from my house. Totally loved the trip, though. Always a pleasure.
After 9 days of leaves, I come back feeling somewhat mentally fresh and rested.
The very next day, I catch cold and fever. Whole body fucked up. Skull paining from sneezing and blowing nose too much. Body paining from weakness and little fever.
Now.. I don’t want to work at all. Even little work gives me stress. Even though I have time to complete it.
I mean 😪
What an unnecessary hell after 9 days of heaven.2 -
Working on a very large project in C that will ultimately be open sourced and will almost definitely receive the attention of a lot of people - though it's not clear if it'll be good reception or bad reception.
It's like performing in front of a large group of people. It's very nerveracking to know that all of this effort could get shat on after months of hard work.
Only inebriation brings me motivation to do it (it's a necessary part of a much larger project and just needs to get finished). Having thought about this problem for almost 10 years and just now doing something about it is a lot of stress.2 -
That feeling of going from a high stress job to a low stress job that lets you travel on the companies dime.... pure bliss.

Fuck ticketing systems man.. jumped from a good job that i previously thought was going to be a deadend and jobhopped to a new one with a significant salary increase. Problem is that The stress levels increased 5x, and there’s significant rush to complete tasks that have sub optimal descriptions to put it nicely. The problem with that is that the lead doesn’t have enough time to properly write them and catching him during work hours for him to explain them is sometimes impossible. Sitting in limbo with 4-5 tickets open, all of them with high priority and stresing the fuck out.7

I finally ordered myself a stress ball, and a PHP duck, but they aren't here yet and I need them today! Also my duck is gonna need to get a new Python cape here soon as well. -
You know what I hate? The periods close to a new release. It's that annoying time that managers start heaving impatiently to developers: "Push out new hotfixes! Push out new hotfixes!". Fuck you, man. Don't stress a developer. Kthx. If you think developing is so easy, come do it yourself, you IT-ignorant buffoon.1
-
I can't deal with this stress anymore
I really like working at this company but the stress is getting worse and worse, too many projects going on, deadlines creeping up, micro management through "agile" and many others.
Not sure what to do, I like the people, the projects themselves but I fucking hate the management!
I think I'm gonna have to leave, I might even need a couple months break just to regain my mental power before I get back to work.2 -
This job will eat me up.
I did not feel good last week due to my vaccine. I really don't know what happened what even after a week of it, I feel week and dizzy.
I couldn't work at all due to all this, and now the senior from my team is indirectly saying that this project is slow. I know it is slow because I couldn't work without getting 13 hours of sleep.
I am scared. I think I do not the element of good developer. I am trying my best though.
But whenever I get these kind of remarks I fail to do even the easiest thing possible.7 -
having a stress ball is cute, but it is frustrating and stressful to have it rolling away if not careful...
That is why I have stress cubes :p2 -
Hooray! voice is now working on localhost! Now to find a high latency, low reliability connection to stress-test the thing. Do you reckon sending the packets 3 times to echo.websocket.org is unreliable enough?

How do you guys deal with stress and when do you think it’s time for a new job if you’re not enjoying your current job?3

Second day I lack sleep, girls consuming my evenings with their bla bla, debugging dosbox games and why some won't work, having to perform at work, breaking my body at gym, cooking complex meals..
I feel physically ill of stress..4 -
Feel like shit, can't focus on work, exam coming up in about 2 weeks...
These stupid numerical algorithms are easy, and yet I manage to get stuck on every shitty little detail, I panic, and I completely lose focus.
This shit has been destroying my academic career... Can't focus properly anymore, cannot study even the simplest things - things that I used to do off the top of my head just a year ago.
My sleep schedule is FUBAR, it's a miracle if I manage to stick to the same timezone for three nights in a row.
Yet I'm still learning new things, trying out stuff and solving problems. Just not the ones that I need to pass my exams.
And before anyone says that university is useless and whatnot: I'm studying aerospace engineering.
I love it, I'm having great fun, learning amazing things, and I've met a lot of amazing people thanks to it. It's one of the few choices in life that I am certain of, and would gladly repeat over and over again.
I've burned myself out from stress, far harder and longer than I've ever done before, and I cannot figure out a way to recover from it.
I've been doing better in the last month or so, but I still cannot get any proper work done, and this is gonna bite me in the ass really hard, once again.
Funny story: I had 3 days of break between the end of the previous semester and the beginning of this one. 3 days of pure freedom.
In those 3 days, I spontaneously reverted to a normal sleep schedule (didn't even need an alarm clock) and felt like a mountain had been lifted off my shoulders.
A year ago I had no idea what truly panicking in the middle of an exam felt like.
My mind had never gone completely blank.
I had no idea what impaired cognitive ability felt like.
This shit is scary.
Why do our minds have to make things so complicated? -
I am stressed out to the point that, when I am not I don't know what to do and I feel bored while I have a ton of things to get done, that I was unable to finish while stressed1

I miss having cats when I was little... Too bad the place I'm staying doesn't allow pets or I would have some kitties to help me de-stress (probably would create stress as well, but they're kitties!)
