1998 talk: Copy the Internet
I was surfing the web on my good old windows 98 pc, a younger friend comes to my place and sees me using IE. Sudently he asks:
Friend: What is that program?
Me: It's Internet Explorer.
Fr: - What is it for?
Me: - Well, you can write something here, (url), to go to different sites, search for stuff you like, participate in foruns, etc...
Fr: - Oh yeah, I know what that is, my cousin also has that in his PC, but I don't.
...(Little pause)...
- Can you copy the internet for me? Because I don't have it.
Me: You can't copy the Internet! You need a phone connection.
Fr - But I'll give you a floppy disk, you put that program there, and then I can use it too.
Me - The shortcut won't give you Internet!
I think I ended up copying the shortcut of IE to him, just to prove my point.
The funny thing is that the link really worked because he also had IE in his machine, while not in the workspace, however it was exactly in the same folder location as mine, but obviously he didn't had a wired phone connection.
Fr - "Maybe I need to copy something more! The program opens but it doesn't show anything."7 -

Rust: Sure, but you know it's expensive, right? Why don't you just let your friend borrow your coffee?
Me: Alright, but I have two friends.
Rust: No problem, you can share it with as many friends as you’d like, but only one of you is allowed to drink it.
C++: Hey wait! I’ll gladly make a cup of your coffee for your friends! I’ll even let them share it! Heck, they can even share yours!
Rust: Hey C++, you know copying coffee is expensive.
C++: Of course I do, but he didn’t define move construction or assignment, so he implicitly wants a copy!
Me: [To my friends:] Hey, let’s just go over to the Python coffee shop.
Rust: [To C++:] Hmph. The baristas at that place will even let you declare that a muffin is a cup of coffee.
C++: Yeah, but wait till they try to drink it. I hear it can be quite exceptional....

(tl;dr at the bottom)
one day, an old "friend" asked if i would like to be part of a project with their friends to create a site, we had plenty of meetings, my partner and i were excited with this project until we realized that those girls literally wanted a copy-paste from another site, and i mean, exactly the same but translated in google translate. We even asked other developers for their opinion and they said the same, that it was a copypastarino.
so my partner and i talked to them about how we didn't want to be part of a copied project. Those girls went angry and we drop off that.
Yesterday, after almost 7 months, I found you that those girls won an "startup contest" and that they will be traveling to sillicon valley soon to meet a founder and start the business.
ooooh boy...
what would happen if we send an email pointing out that copied-googleTranslated project?
is the industry really that dumb or lazy? i mean, how is that even possible that they haven't found it out?
tl;dr
some girls just google-translated a site, my partner and i didnt want to be involved and now, 7 months later, they are going to sillicon valley to meet a founder and make it real.9 -

So we got a new developer
And his first task's PR is a pure copy paste off a random website that I managed to find in less than 1 minute of searching for the feature on Google
And I mean that's cool and all, because we all do that sometimes
But my oh my, he didn't even bother changing it one bit, hell it didn't even fit the purpose and it was weirdly imported as a separate class instead of it being added as an extension on the existing base class

Here's a thought!
Our bodies are mortal. And they are like flowers: they grow, blossom at their best and then begin their slow degradations, deaths.
Our mind is what seems to be the essence of _us_.
Now suppose someone finds a way to copy our minds into some tech so they could survive our bodies' deaths. Making us sort of immortal. Sounds cool, eh?
But that would make a copy of your mind. You would still be stuck in your mortal body while your copy would be immortal. Would you be happier to die knowing that it's YOU who is dying and not your copy, rather than dying w/o leaving a copy of you behind? Is a copy of you still YOU?
It could be YOU for others. But is it YOU for you?23 -

I started watching Silicon Valley some days back. Just finished season-1. I'm fucking sad and pissed off right now... No, don't get me wrong...Silicon Valley is good. I loved it.
Problem is, there is an Indian YouTube series called TVF Pitchers which had almost same story as silicon valley. I loved that series, when I watched it in 2015, after completing that I really was very impressive with the channel because of the originality and very off-the-track plot. Now after watching Silicon valley, I'm fucking sad... THEY JUST FUCKING COPY PASTED IT. yeah, some people with their "courtroom skills" will tell me that no it was different story... Fuck you! It was a copy and that's it. They removed Gilfoyle character and there was no product information in entire series... That was the biggest change in it. But overall it was a copy... A fucking copy.
The problem is they themselves, in their other videos, make fun of our movies/songs because of them being copied... Now, they are fucking doing it on their own.
I know it's not much related to devRant. Sorry about that.
Some times back, I joined a startup and they pitched in their idea as if they created it on their own... Later I found out that the same idea is running in a successful Palo Alto based company. And just like TVF Pitchers, they also used to make fun of an Indian e-commerce startup (a big one) because it was a copy of Amazon... THEN WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU!!!
I don't know, but for some reason I just fucking hate it. Everybody here is busy copy fucking pasting US. They laugh at others, but they are also same... I'm going through Peter Theil's Zero to One.. and the book is making much more sense to me now.8 -

This is a gripe about modern UX interfaces. UX interfaces need to have better ways to get information displayed in text as text. It is exceedingly annoying to be presented with an error message in a dialog with a cryptic error code. The user is forced to transcribe the error message to try and figure out what is causing the error. Just make the text copy-able with normal cut and paste interfaces. I think this should be a standard in interfaces that present text to make it easy to copy the message or text from interfaces. This makes information sharing easier and less cumbersome to the user. This is definitely a mindset change for UX. This is mostly a gripe about desktop. Phone systems are just shit to begin with.6

This post is kinda late. For those who haven't read my previous rants, a marketing coworker bragged about a feature that we hadn't yet finished. (I'm thinking that they perhaps did it to put extra pressure on the dev team 🤔.) Of course it backfired pretty bad, because this feature was a plug-in for another service, and even though the dev team was on time with the feature, the other service we were writing a plug-in for took _sooo_ long to approve of our code, and it made this marketing guy look so bad in front of these clients because the feature was a few weeks late.
A part of the new feature was that some of their data would be synced with this service. These customers were so important that we couldn't afford to disappoint them, and the solution was... *drumroll please* ... that this marketing guy would have to manually copy the customer's data from the service into our platform to make the customer think this feature is ready. Row by row. I'm hearing it takes about one hour of their day 🤣
I mean I'm good friends with the guy but... they kinda deserved it2 -

Why is it so difficult to copy paste in an editor which is considered as one of the most sophisticated editor ? I use VIM for almost everything except for copy pasting . All those internal buffer ..external buffer things are complicating things..

For a long time I wanted to have the possibility in Swift to copy instances of value types by just changing the value of one property (member variable).

A developer in my team just implemented a new design from a screenshot. Because the copy of the app isn't written in his native language he had written the copy from the screenshot letter by letter.
I told him I was really impressed with his work (almost no errors!), but to me it was unacceptable that he should have to go through all this trouble. I also told him that next time he could ask me to write down the copy for him (it's written in my native language).
So I'm curious: who else here is programming for apps that aren't written in your own language, and what are the challenges you face? Also: how can I help the developers in my team with this? -

Open one note. Paste text. Theres the url.
I think clipboard saves the url when you copy text from a browser, dunno. but its interesting.9 -

Ah, the ancient art of copy-paste development – where originality goes to die and bugs come out to play. It's like a cursed incantation that tempts even the best of us into the dark abyss of shortcuts.
You think you're saving time by copying that snippet from Stack Overflow, but little do you know, you've just invited a horde of gremlins into your codebase. Suddenly, your once-cohesive architecture looks like a patchwork quilt sewn by a drunkard.
And let's not forget the thrill of debugging when you realize that the copied code references variables that don't even exist in your context. "Ah, yes, I remember copying this gem at 2 AM. What could possibly go wrong?"
But wait, there's more! Copy-pasting also introduces a special kind of chaos when updates are needed. You find yourself fixing the same bug in five different places because you couldn't be bothered to encapsulate that logic in a reusable function.
So here's a heartfelt salute to all the copy-paste warriors out there, bravely navigating the treacherous waters of borrowed code. May your future coding endeavors involve more thinking, less CTRL+C, and a lot fewer late-night bug hunts!1 -
Goddamn, Windows' idea of symlinks is completely broken. It's like they faked it at the UI level, but if your build process wants to copy the file? Too bad, it's not real so you can't copy it.1

So I thought I had a basic, high level understanding of C++ STL strings, pointers, copy constructors and stuff. In comes a dirname, a -D_GLIBCXX_USE_CXX11_ABI=0 and... Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.
So what is happening? I copy a string expecting a deep copy, but then I do the dirname or manipulation on the copy and it messes up *both* strings. gcc/C++ I know you're a beast, but what's going on there? Thing is only possible if I cast away const from c_str - which of course is a doubtful operation - but there also seems to be some strange copy on write logic that the data pointers initially point to same memory location and only with first manipulation on the copy they start to point to different addresses.
I had no clue. And still don't have.4 -

So i had this idea to use a CMS, Git and continuous integration for
- automatic spell checking
- automatic assigning the copy text to translation bureaus, and get translations back.
- version control the texts and translations.
- document generation in multiple formats
- checking the text flow in the document (no overflown text)
- Checking for accessibility for the handy caped
- Deploying it on the Website
Do you think this is feasible? Can something that was made for code also be used to handle copy text documents? In my head this would save so much work but i'm no expert in CI/CD.
Thank you for your advice!8 -
Comment in our code, followed by 3 identical SQL queries with only the table name different (Admin, regular user, old regular user).
Then we duplicated the entire project as it being a contract first webservice prevented us from changing it's signature to accommodate the needs of a new application.2 -
I just found this in the code I'm working on:
function checkDateValidity() {
function checkDateValidity() {
...
}
}
Obviously a bad copy/paste. Not even sure how it was working before; it probably wasn't.1 -
How to copy in Microsoft Edge by pressing ctrl+c one time only? Motherfuckers made copy/paste so fucking disgusting!6

When the website does auto-copy to clipboard and adds spaces to the copied text. >:(

I tried to copy some files from a corrupted microsd... In windows the hole Explorer died and I had to restart the pc, then I startet the copy on linux, the corrupted files were shown and the working ones cp has success. Fuck Windows.

Note to self:
Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+V to replace text with the clipboard contents does not work if highlighting text copies it.
I just spent 20 minutes copy-pasting stuff before realizing nothing had changed…2 -
I really am in a love/hate relationship with programming...
I had some free time so I decided to do the Google foo bar challenge. For testing purpose, I code in sublime text and then copy the code in the browser.
Yesterday, I spent most of the afternoon doing one challenge. I figured out how to approach the problem, which was kinda easy, and coded it in about 10 minutes. For some reason, what worked perfectly in sublime text worked without throwing any errors in the browser, but 4 of the 5 test done by Google failed.
Today, after spending a good hour tweaking some stuff in the hope that it would work, the browser editor started throwing indentation errors...
Deleted the code in the browser, copy-pasted the exact same code from sublime : All test passed!
That's a couple of hours I'm never getting back. -
Everybody speaks about this "compatibility matrix" but nobody can produce an accurate copy anymore.1

Damn it! I just spent an hour debugging something and it was due to a copy-paste error.
Copy paste hell. Bah. -
A cool script to automate copy and paste of commands from the web to the terminal
Usually, we do
1.Copy the command
2. Open the terminal
3. Paste the content copied into the terminal
4. Write password in case the command starts with sudo
My script does all that with one press of a shortcut.
Below is the link in case you like the idea of this automation

Work on something locally for a week. Everything works. Take a copy of the production db and run update scripts to the copy to make sure it goes smoothly. Nothing works. Damn.

I don't know how to tell Visio to print my drawings in A3 format so I print them in A4, put the papers on the copy machine and copy them to A32

Question for devs:
How are y’all handling copy changes in your app? What’s ur process? Do you put up a PR for every small copy change or do you use a special tool or something?4 -
Fingers -- what are you doing? You don't need the extra typing practice. Just use copy+paste already!
-
Rust really needs an implicit Clone for lightweight operations like cloning an Rc, or a big fat warning sign at Copy telling programmers never to derive it for any custom type because if you ever have to remove it you will have to update every single occurrence of any value of your type.7

is it good to copy from one place and commit forgery or copy from multiple places and make it a research

Stackoverflow - the ultimate treasure for all the developers.
Now a days, I don't use "keyboard" much to build an application... the mouse is enough for "Right Click -> Copy" and "Right Click -> Paste".

Copy/pasting doc ain't good D:2 -
Yes, I'm that sucker who writes by hand the copy paste code fields even if he already knows how to do that. I'm not proud of it but, what can I say? I'm a wet guy...
