Our university syllabus is so outdated, we are forced to do C programs in TurboC.
So we install Dosbox on Windows 8 machines...

Are you serious? Are you afraid of an SQL injection or something, and instead of properly sanitizing your queries you disallow characters? Or is your software and database so outdated that you're afraid special characters will break it? Goodbye security15

Manager: I can’t believe you use Linux, that is such an outdated operating system. You need to get with the times and move to a more modern one like Windows or Mac. Literally NOBODY uses Linux anymore, do you still go to Blockbuster Video too? Ha!
Dev: …
I’m starting to realize that 80% of my job is resisting the urge to punch this guy in the face. Thanks goodness for remote work.33 -
Thank you dear mr. boss for fucking up our master branch by adding local changes to a 2 months outdated master branch (250 FUCKING COMMITS BEHIND), pull the remote and then just push without resolving any conflicts!!!1!!!
But thank you so much for sending me an email at 10pm asking me to resolve the conflicts.
It is 3 in the morning and it took 1 hour to get it clean.
Sometimes I want to break some necks...9 -
The company I work for...
Has:
1. No CI/CD
2. SVN instead of GIT
3. Outsourcing to India (oof)
4. No Automated Testing
5. Uses Bugnet (ancient, outdated)
6. No clearly defined code standards
7. No real documentation on the code
8. Rubbish code
9. No desire to reduce technical debt
10. Poorly maintained DB
11. Poor outdated equipment
12. A useless PM
13. Still priotizes IE support (??)
On a scale of 1 to 10 how fucked is this company and anything they develop?41 -
Today I learnt from a more experienced Dev that using git as versioning system makes the code open source.18

Client: "O auth what?"
Me: " You know, the current standard for REST API authentication and authorisation"
Client: " What's REST?"

FUCK!!! FUCK IT ALL. FUCK YOU AND YOUR CRAPPY BULLSHT UNDOCUMENTED AND OUTDATED API.

I CAN'T WAIT TO LEAVE THIS PLACE FOR GOOD.6 -
I was tasked with maintaining a handful of chemistry simulations for the web. First things first, replace these outdated links and turn them into Bootstrap buttons that work on mobile. Wait, why do all of these look so horrible on mobile? nothing's scaling properly. *looks at fucking 1,000-line CSS file* The old developers used position:absolute for absolutely EVERYTHING. And I counted one div on the entire page. This is why you don't trust chem engineers to do your "web design" #FuckDreamweaver7

I've recently red a blog post stating 'Google leaves x Million Android devices vulnerable to a new Exploit'
I don't really sympathize with Google, but it's simply the wrong message... It should be more like FUCK VENDORS, WHO WON'T SUPPLY UPDATES TO DEVICES OLDER THAN 1.5 YEARS
Seriously, it's them who make you stuck on outdated OS versions... Just imagine you could only install Windows Vista on your 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad, because it's considered outdated...
FUCK VENDORS (again, just in case)8 -

I once had to literally hack a Joomla 1.5.x site for a client, because they did not find the passwords (hosting, cms, ftp, mysql). After 5 minutes and a SQL injection I was in like flynn.

I actually like Microsoft these days. Despite developing on Mac machines, we use VSTS for code repo, build/release pipelines and work item tracking, and Azure for all things cloud. It all works incredibly well together and at low cost.
Microsoft has changed ethos massively in the last few years. In my opinion, the classic dev mantra of “Microsoft is shit and evil, Linux is flawless” is outdated and getting kind of boring.6 -
Interveiwer: Do you like what you've learnt so far from your course in uni?

Remove all the outdated and unwanted topics which were taught during Indus Valley civilization like: 8080 microprocessor, Java 6, Software Testing principles etc. And add more interesting and realistic topics like: Algorithm design, graphs and other data structures, Java 8 (at least for now), big data, Basics about AI, etc.7

My current project is a fucking nightmare.
It started in 2007, using a solution developed by an Indian company due to outsourcing (aka low-quality code).
It's running on Java 7 on the back-end and its front-end side is pure Javascript files. There are thousands of little .js files everywhere, no documentation, no comments, differents coding styles, outdated API that were already outdated at the time, mixed oop and procedural.
Not even when I started coding, I wrote something so horrible.
Yo, it's a clusterfuck and I just wanna get drunk.5 -
Its my morning rant time... Me and my team are working on implementing our solution into 20 year old piece of shit POS system which:
1. Uses old piece of shit computers - which is slower than average calculator.
2. Uses .Net 2.0 - and no higher versions could be installed.
3. Has 20 year old documentation - outdated as fuck.
4. Throws unknown and non explainable COMExceptions.
5. Works slow as fuck.
And we have to deal with all its issues as 3rd side integration.. FUCK... FUCK.. FUCK....8 -
Yes former technical person who is now a business person. Please, please advise me on my job with your decaying outdated skills. Yes, google for me. I didn't know how to do that. Ah wonderful yes, you recall this being "easy" which is why you quit the field. What a nice time this is.4

Bethesda is full of shit. Starfield somehow needs a super new PC because it alledgedly uses modern SW tech.
Strange point: while a high-end PC with 7800X3D and 4090 makes the performance bearable (though not great), the graphics don't look spectacular. In fact, they look outdated.
No Bethesda, you don't use modern tech. You require modern HW tech to make up somewhat for your shitty engine and incompetent devs.15 -
Today my grandmother called and told me she wasnt able to login to her account for her ISP. Alright, maybe shes confused about the passwords as we had to change it recently. No, turns out they still have this "oh sorry you typed your password incorrect three times, so we will lock your account and your granny have to do the 2 hour telephone queue"
You and your fucking outdated auth practise can go and kindly fuck yourself. Fix this shit before I get real mad.5 -
Read source code and unit tests. Don’t bother documentation cause it’s outdated. Dig into the core, look where data goes in and where it gets out. Everything else is just a wrapper.6
-
Today in IT class our teacher said: 'you can only use char and int in a switch statement'
I was confused because I was 100% sure that you could also use string and so when I got out of school I immediately looked it up.
It is true, well it was true until 2011 when Java 7 was released which added the possibility to also use the string data type in switch statements.
In this I see a huge problem with the education system. Teachers (almost) never 'update' their knowledge and then teach outdated stuff to their pupils. While this may not be a problem in some subjects, it definitely is a huge problem in IT.
The development world is always evolving but if the teachers don't follow along the pupils get taught outdated stuff which, in my opinion, is a really big problem when they finish school and go out in the world to find jobs.9 -
when in doubt,
write everything manually,
because even if a package exists,
it's so old and outdated,
it's not even worth fixing all the errors,

grow your own APIs

From Sarah Connor Chronicles, 2008: "They used to think that 12 nanometer scale was impossible. The circuits are so tiny, you're all but in the quantum realm. It's the most sophisticated processor on earth. If you could take your memories, your consciousness, everything that makes you a person, turn it into pure data, and download it onto a machine, that chip could run it."
I'm watching the DVD on a quadcore Ryzen APU that is built in 12nm, and it was already outdated when I bought it last year. I guess I better download myself to my laptop because that's a 7nm Ryzen.14 -
So having gotten my hands on the books I need for the next semester I decided to go take a look at what's in them.
Now the first is mostly web stuff and the second is just about software design. It starts off with an introduction to HTML5, where they didn't really teach HTML5, more like they taught HTML3/4 but not in a way that was too dangerous. I can tolerate not having my semantic tags tbh. They also used spaces on both sides of the = for some reason.
Then a CSS chapter which was also surprisingly mediocre. They didn't use a dedicated CSS file, but I can live with that, for starters.
Then there were some surprisingly decent JS chapters. Although they did use newlines before their { kinda miffed me. There has also been a few developments since this books release, but tbh this isn't the worst case of outdatedness. (And at least they didn't use jquery when teaching JS)
Then a chapter on SQL which I ignored.
Then a chapter about PHP, and, uhm, when did this book get released? Well the ISBN is 978-0-13-215100-9 and using the power of Google we can reveal it was published in.. 2011..
I'm quite happy that I already know how to program12 -
Did a code test at an interview, had to aggregate data from a db. They stored cities with population count and users referenced cities.. 6 cities had a higher user count than population 🤔
They were a little taken back and suggested the population data must be outdated 😉.. it got a bit awkward1 -

This fucking teacher was my "Web Design" teacher in high school.
Okay, yes, I acknowledge that this is an entry level course, but does that honestly mean that we need to teach the same source taught to students in the 90s? You know, the one where all layouts are table/iframe-based?
I understand that I completely disregarded your set criteria for grading by using CSS to create my website rather than tables and I frames, however I believe that it's fairly logical to conclude that anyone using CSS has a sufficient comprehension of HTML to be able to pass your stupid assignments. So why must time be wasted with coding poorly designed sites? -
When some one at the company decides to branch off from the main codebase and end up with several outdated and separetely modified branches for two years.
Yeah nice work genius and good luck with resolving over 250 files of merge conflicts.

After 2 years at the uni with 6 programming courses, I stopped studying and started working.
So I kinda left with some expectation or demand for some level of standard, not the highest, but at least not expecting diarrea dog shit level of quality.
On my first jobs, I was pretty shocked with their outdated technologies, terrible workflows, insanely unsafe setups and vomit inducing management. I thought "this isn't normal, this shouldn't be happening"
After being for a week on devrant, I now think the opposite is not normal. -
When looking something up, I generally try to avoid StackOverflow answers and find actual documentation, since SO answers are usually outdated.2

Just found out that one section of my place of work still uses floppy disks. No I’m not fucking kidding. The other sad part? We still have the outdated computers to read them. 😩😂
Please, send help or a job application...5 -
Had an interesting application for a web / fs position the other day. Some guy in his 40s sent a CV, along with a bunch of 5+ years old reference letters (recommending him for things like PHP 5.3 and ExtJs 4). A bit outdated but okay.
And then, he put in a list of NPM packages he used. Not just relevant frameworks like Angular & React, or tools like Webpack and Babel. No. A list. Of. NPM. Packages. There were things like UUID there, which is literary a single function!2 -
Richard Hendricks is becoming less believable all the time. In season 3, they staffed their company with a crew of offshore devs and worked intimately over video chat, and it worked perfectly! They produced a product that wasn't exactly what the world wanted, but it was exactly what Richard wanted.
Now, in season 5, they're completely ignoring their previous success, and hiring/managing the most expensive devs in the world, and enforcing an outdated, "be at your desk" policy.
And they're having huge problems with it. Go figure.1 -
The legacy codebase, episode 4584985948:

In 2 weeks FOSDEM will be held in Brussels. I'll be going with some friends. Are you coming as well? Perhaps we could do a little meetup at the event?
Poettering will be speaking at the event as well btw. Presenting.. systemd-homed, a new systemd component. I shit you not. The "outdated" home directories are to be replaced by a service. Home directories as a service, the next big thing?

Why the hell is JS so terrible, and why do so many people resort to using is as a back end. So many packages, so many outdated dependencies. My coworkers and friends have heard me rant about my constant frustration with this terrible setup.
I understand the need for dynamic html but why have we bastardized this language to the extent we have.
Keep your projects up to date, it saves people a lot of trouble in the future.8 -
Guys may i have your opinion please.
Should i take a job opportunity seriously if they are asking me to do an AngularJS code challenge?
Taking into consideration that AngularJS became outdated or legacy few months ago.
What do you think35 -

"Web" Teacher wanted us to learn horribly outdated html in the middle of web2.0 wave.
HTML5 ? CSS3 ? nope.
No CSS at all, and longest part of the class was on the importance of prehistoric HTML doctypes.
Capitalized tags, tables, BGCOLOR attributes...

Our teacher is forcing us to code in an outdated version of a really bad IDE to write basic C, we can't use anything else!

Planned on installing Linux, for the first time, on a old computer today. Turns out you need a usb-stick to install it from. Minimum 2gb. - No problem, I thought, because I have a old stick in a drawer. Turns out it was on 128mb. Outdated technology. Time to go shopping.4

As an CS college drop-out I have nothing to add than what has already been said, outdated material and barely used languages with paper coding / exams and listening to an old geeze about when he programmed in 1942.. you get it..
Not that I lack respect for what the man did back then but it seems rather unrelated in today's times.
So now it's stockmen work while own study, working on small projects and learning with mates and amazing camp platforms now and again.2 -
The company I work for uses Coldfusion which is a dead technology in my opinion. I was tasked with using a data grid for our data from our mssql databases. This data grid I was trying out uses ajax to make a call to the server and expects the data transfered back in Json format. well coldfusion sucks balls because it's serializeJson function returns a outdated JSON structure and I can't use it. So obviously this datagrid throws errors and when I try looking up coldfusion solutions online or scope out stack overflow, the posts are dated like 6 years back because no one fucking uses CF anymore. My boss loves to jerk to it, it seems because he refuses to change languages cause its all they have ever used. -_- this is 2016 bitch lol6

Oh my gosh. Windows is...eh..
I mean, it is outdated and slow, has bugs and many other stuff, but do you know why I use it? It is widely supported.
Compare application support on Mac or Linux! It is nothing compared to Windows.
However, I will still have to deal with it for a very very long time...3 -
Spending the day sending emails back and forth with your client because they can't be bothered to prepare a single overview of what properties the endpoint expects, and instead expect you to piece it together from 6 PDFs of which at least 2 contain contradicting information, another is outdated, and the last one seems to have been exported from word and is missing half the content.
Fun times! -
A few days ago our server was compromised due to an outdated Jenkins version. The malicious user installed a crypto miner on the server... The same day that it was found I told management that I'm interested in helping out with the server. Since then, nothing happened... No updates, no security measures, no nothing (except for the removed crypto miner and updated Jenkins software)
Oh well only a matter of time before another hack...
Question to some (who work way way way longer than me) med - seniors, should I make a big deal out of this? And keep pressure on it. Or should I just leave it be and wait for the next comprised server? I know devrant is not a Q&A service, but some dev to dev advice is much appreciated.

- <some more unrelated stuff>
- <outdated forbidden techniques>
- <Chinese gibberish>

- "how to summon a demon (not clickbait!)"
At this point you either explore the unexplored lands (aka page 2 and beyond, or using Bing or Yahoo), or accept your fate.3 -
Hey seniors:
Let's make a rant and name some old technologies that have been frequently used and now they are obsolete12 -
This is the best example of google giving a fuck about their own guidelines.
They always ram their expectations of you making your apps fit the guidelines a 100% into you, but then they give a fuck about heir guidelines in their own software.
They use a ListView here in google contacts. It's completely outdated for a large amount of data, such as my 200 contacts. They literally push you not to use outdated techniques such as ListViews in your app. Use RecyclerViews, our completely new solution instead. ListViews are very very bad in performance.
I KNOW THIS SOUNDS PICKY, BUT THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE!!! THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THEIR OWN GUIDELINES IN EVRY WAY! BEST OTHER EXAMPLE IS GOOGLE PLAY STORE. BAD PERFORMANCE 100%. BUT AT LEAST IT HAS RUCKLING ANIMATIONS.4 -
how to php, an infographic by Bind (that me)

6) after 1 week, realize that there is a built in method, but its called userData_registration_sEnder0(adress, header, egg, pinNumbe_r, message)

Does anyone else feel that "retirement" is an outdated concept? Our generation will probably never truly retire, not in the same sense that this word meant in 20th century.

MySQL 5.5 end of life’d in 2010. In 2021 my company started an upgrade to 5.6. The outdated dependencies meant we needed 25 engineers for 2 months full-time to make the upgrade as invisible to users as possible. We still took about 90 minutes of downtime on cutover day. Not upgrading MySQL on time meant we paid way more in terms of engineering hours. The reason we call it debt, is because you pay interest when you don’t tKe care of it right away.4

They're using an outdated software that uses vb6 modules to scrap some images and no employee have ever written a single line of code.

Anyone else thinks the internet is outdated and doesn't suit the needs of today? We can't keep patching it up forever.4
-
Rant..
Realised I was working with the outdated version of JavaScript library and all my months effort needs redo. Shit!!! Why do devs change code so much that backward compatibility becomes an issue.....2 -
I am SOOOO tired of outdated, easily circumvented, methods of attempting to find rule breaking culprits...
especially when they can't even come up with anything more specific than 'suspecting' "unusual activity".17 -
Every time we have finished a project and deployed it the first time at least half of the components are outdated already 😒 Even if we worked only 2 weeks on something.
I hate Murphy's law! -
Official documentation > StackOverflow.
StackOverflow sometimes has well-grounded and elaborate explanations on a question by well-meaning and knowledgeable developers, but oftentimes the answers also contain outdated or 'dirty' solutions and so it's always to be taken with a grain of salt.
However, in cases like the official Spring documentation, the IETF RFC's and the MDN, those provide a correct explanation to the problem, even if it requires some reading around. When it comes to serious and correct work, I favor these over the bro-zone that is StackOverflow.6 -
What's worse than WordPress? WordPress + WooCommerce! What's worse than WordPress + WooCommerce? WordPress + WooCommerce + PayPal! What other more shitty software could we possibly add? Some malicious virus hidden somewhere in the millions of free WordPress plugins most of which are not even full open-source? Who can possibly review and maintain that rummage table of outdated crap code?13

Trying to install library on Windows

Try to install same library
Won't work

"Most electronics work better while turned *on*. The rest are made by HP"
Fucking printer will not only *not* print my stuff but will also make hellish noises, print the same "hello world!" page six times in a row, jam paper in the seventh and spit expensive ink on its own mechanism while there is not even paper in it.
Fucking outdated cellulose-based bureaucracy. Govt' websites are far from perfect but yet are closer to it than presenting fucking tree-meat slabs unecessary covered in colourful liquid gold.2 -
SO MANY FUCKING API'S WITH EITHER NONE OR VERY OUTDATED FUCKING JS DOCUMENTATION. I have been working on a JS Discord bot and I want it to work with some API's to for example display the weather in a certain place... I can't find ANY FUCKING TUTORIALS THAT WORK. I feel like I'm just missing something important.4

Why do people think Perl's outdated?
Until Python/Ruby get a port of Keyword::Declare Perl's niche stays unquestioned.7 -
So today I gave my superiors at work a piece of my mind about the pc I sit on (I was/am not happy about it). I am expected to use Photoshop and Illustrator on a pc with 8gb ddr3 1333mhz and no graphics card, except for the one integrated in Intel's processor, which also is super outdated. Like you couldn't get more than $80 for the entire machine. So, today I ranted towards them irl and my message has finally seemed to sink in. Fuck.
-
So, if you were supposed to work on a website that is already pretty shitty coded, shitty styled and outdated... Would you go on coding like shit for the sake of consistency or would you embed a new mini-system in it trying to pay some fucking respect to everything you have learned?
Edit: in this scenario, you can actually make a choice haha7 -
Had to create a quick server side script. Created a quick function that returns an array, and tried to access a value from the function call like this:
$val = func()[0]
Apparently php didn’t include that feature until PHP 5.4
Wtf PHP.
Log into my webhost to update the the PHP version; only to discover that the highest PHP is PHP 5.5. PHP 7 is the current revision.
Wtf a2hosting.8 -
My lovely team and I inherited a legacy app written in Angular 14.
We love it when we get fucked by Pajeets like this.
We love tons of `any`-s in the codebase.
We love unreadable code with 5 levels of nested ternary operators.
We love the lack of a README on how to actually build/start the app.
We love the outdated dependencies.
And we absolutely love it when you use a paid package that costs $1755.4 -
I fuckin give up.
You can't use Android without fuckin gapps, you can but it's fuckin miserable.
And microG still sucks (I respect all the effort from the devs tho)
And there are not enough roms that implement signature spoofing
Almost all the open source apps look like shit and are outdated (also appreciate the devs efforts)

YOU KNOW WHAT GOOGLE JUST TAKE MY DATA

Fuck this IOS provisioning hell
Fuck this firebase cloud messaging plugin
Fuck outdated documentation of said plugin
Fuck unsolved issues from about 3 years ago on SO
Fuck it all6 -
If I'm still around in this wretched industry when I'm 60+, I hope I become a robotic Godzilla pwning young whipper-snappers left and right instead of an outdated fossilized dinosaur.

I Feel very happy being in quarantine. Going to college and wasting 6-7 hours of time in learning that stupid old stuff and working all night totally sucks. Now, i have my whole 24 hours to work. Stupid outdated indian colleges.4

Phoning salespersons:
Me: "we need a new VoIP solution for our office."
Sales: "we're certified"
Me: "we need a new VoIP solution for our office."
Sales: "YOUR WHOLE IT INFRASTRUCTURE IS OUTDATED, UPGRADE ASAP!"
This is why I prefer mails so much over telephoning.2 -

So recently I've been getting a bit tired of my countrie's slow and outdated-ass politics combined with the old-ass leadership.
I make an effort to come over as a liberal in public when I'm under people but sometimes..sometimes it's getting a bit hard.8 -
Do you ever feel so down that you realize you've been writing shit code which does nothing productive and you've been just reinventing the wheel? Like, being in a confused state of being doubtful and afraid of being outdated coz you don't know any future proof tech? I'm in the final year of CS undergrad and this feeling sucks.3
-
Now I also experienced the corporate IT - hell.
I'm an apprentice at a small but branch of a fairly big company.
We get a fuckton of guidelines from our IT-HQ, plenty of them outdated.
We can't even decide how to configure our firewalls our self, but get them preconfigured from the HQ.
They micromanage us so hard, we can't even put a switch in a room, without having to arrange that shit with them.1 -
When you give a basic touch of modern design to a README and critize their replies they end the conversation with
'locked and limited conversation to collaborators'
'We appreciate the effort'
Sure doesn't look like it.
'X is highly specialized software'
Like most other software? And?
'The docs are fairly out of date, and need a complete rewrite, not this kind of graphical adjustment, so it would do more harm than good to present information of how to run this application in a secondary page along with random outdated info.'
So you are too lazy to update them, probably won't for a long time and have a problem with updating the outdated information's design despite that not actually changing the situation.
Disregarding the fact that the 'graphical adjustment' work even if you update the content.
Got it, right.36 -
I'm currently an iOS developer and i have to learn .NET for work. It's a fucking mess of an environment. Everything I try to learn seems to be outdated. smh7

Wow, I thought Australia's subjects were up-to date with modern technology, but as my year 11 IPT course has proven... No.
Genuine Questions from it:
• Where are Web pages stored?
Most web pages are dynamically generated, so... RAM?
•Locate one webpage that uses ASP. Save a copy of this webpage (file name must = asp.mht)
Chrome Doesn't Even Support that as a save able file format any more!!!!
•Visit the webpage [error 404 anyway why write it]
Wow I can click hyperlinks I thought it was just a fancy color added to the text :|
•Add this webpage to your favorites. Supply one (1) screenshot showing this webpage as one of your favorites.
I ask; Who hasn't bookmarked a webpage in their life at the age of 17, and who actually calls them favorites.
•Press the "Back" Button to view the page you were previously on, take a screen shot to prove you doing so.
I am a rebel, I used my magic fingers to press the button without a mouse (keyboard shortcut)
•Press the "Forward" Button to view the page you were on before you went backwards, take a screen shot to prove you doing so.
I never would of guessed :|
•Take a screen shot after opening multiple tabs in Internet Explorer
...
•View the HTML source of the webpage www.google.com, and save a screen shot
Why not the actual file, really? bloat much?
•Take one screen shot of your Internet Explorer Search History
Stalky much?
•What is a Web browser and what tasks does it perform?
Well.... Do you have a page for indepth analyse? Or do you literally what me to say "It let's you load stuff from dat interwebz, via requesting content from a server"
•Define what JavaScript is in relation to web pages
Are we talking server side? or client?
•Define what CSS is in relation to web pages
Do I even need to say fellow ranters ;) -
No offense to anyone who uses it, but I can't stand ASP.net web forms. It just feels so wrong. Then to add the unexplainable behaviour that fixes it's self after creating a new file and pasting in the previous contents without changes.

Sorry needed that off my chest :) -
My university had its half-abandoned tenth floor reserved for fringe scientists. To deter onlookers from going there, the only elevator was locked out, reserved only for uni staff.
As long as you didn’t make drugs there, you were fine. It was dusty, smelled of mold and was full of old Soviet gear. Outdated, sure, but better than nothing.
If you were a student preoccupied with some fringe theory, it was a safe space for you.1 -
Update syllabus with latest technologies instead of teaching some outdated language which has no practical use in the market.

Laptop getting outdated and beginning to malfunction and no money for new laptop..
fuck all freelancing now...14 -
I try to do one thing, I try to make one thing a little better and the universe shovels shit in my face. I’m just trying fix all this old outdated shot and I keep getting shit on in so many ways. I’m trying so hard to not become a bitter angry old man but damn if I don’t understand the bitter angry old mans motives right now. Fuck this ongoing onslaught of crashes and shit shows.

So I've noticed there's a lot of php hatred here on devRant xD Does anybody know of any modern php communities or forums to join? I've searched for a few but a lot are outdated.22

Started my summer internship at a company working on their codebase about two weeks ago. I expected a lot of differences from school, but not this much. I still have no clue what I'm doing. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting stuff done, and it's helping out, but I still have no idea what is going on.
Oh, also, we use outdated Javascript frameworks... I don't actually know Javascript yet but we're just gonna roll with it2 -
/rant on
React Native is BS for Android. Outdated as hell Gradle builds (1.x for certain plugins I mean wtf) and it targets outdated SDK and build tools... Why no simply code for system your software is meant to work :P

In seriousness, I get the concept of build once deploy on all platforms ala Electron but better but hell why is the tooling so outdated?1 -
Never, ever, ever stop learning. And I don't mean sitting in a classroom overpaying for outdated information. Read blogs, news sites, community driven content. Find that thing that only a handful of people are talking about and learn it. Then do that again, and again. The second you stop learning, you'll be left behind. Does that mean you'll be unemployed, or find it impossible to do find work, no, not immediately. But if you stand still looking enough to gather some dust, you'll soon be part of the dust.
-
*launches devrant: * almost everyone talking about types of IDEs to use, while I sit here with just a text editor in my own farts contemplating how much different will my workflow be.4

Am considering quitting college and learning online. It's much better for me personally. I have learned more via Internet in a week than what I did from college in years. I am from India. Most of what they teach is pretty much useless & outdated and the teachers seem to think of technology as a static thing. I don't know if I can ever convince my parents to let me quit. What they think is college = job = good life. Thanks for letting me post here. Had to let it out.20

Be able to understand how to use a framework/library without reading a thousand documentation-less outdated "examples"

I remember studying up on web dev by myself, got advanced into php and all frontend stuff js, jquery, css, html. Coz all jobs in the country wanted those exact stuff. I got a job, 1.5 years later tried to look for other jobs, everyone wanted react, angular, vue, node... fucking market outdates u as u are working. Dont u hate that6

Read the documentation!
...(follow docs)
Why did you do it that way?! The documentation is outdated!!
...(doesn't read docs makes best guess)
Why didn't you follow the documentation??!!
Sigh. -
My group set up a Linux Dev server. We got hacked by Chinese hackers. We set it up again but even more secure with only people inside the uni can access it. We got hacked again.Turns out one of the modules in a container was using an outdated CentOS version. P.S The malicious file on the server was called kk.love.1

I just rsync my current project with one that is a week outdated. Instead of pushing, I pulled the update. Worst, it had a --delete flag.
Have being working on it all week. Finally client asked for updates and I instead pulled the outdated online project to replace my locally updated project folder.
I'm dead😪7 -
I just found out YouTube ReVanced now has a kind of working patcher for android. It was easy to use and I don't have to use outdated vanced anymore. I can also choose which individual patches I want to used.
It's really nice. Even for people who don't want adblock and only want dislikes back since you can just disable that patch. I don't get why anyone wouldn't want to use it.13 -
Rant.
Our dev tooling is not in order.
Names of classes do not represent what they do.
Filename is different from class name and there are multiple classes per file.
I try to fix this hot spaghettis mess and off course our outdated source control gives another barrier! FFS6 -
When your family v. 1.0 is very busy trying to enforce their outdated perspective regarding finding a compatible female of the human race for the purpose of tightly coupling by mutual contract and with hindsight of multiplication of inherited DNA sequence and genomes...

Oh btw, i forgot to tell you guys, our college still teaches us to code, using turbo c++ emulators. 😶. WHAT THE FUCK 😑😤🤬. 😣. Makes me sick🤮.
P. S. I was going to censor the vulgar words but we don't need to on devrant. Yesh😌!!!!2 -
When you come home enthusiastic and you want to continue on a project you've worked on the entire day, but you forgot to do a git commit at work... *sigh* Out-dated files, missing resources,... Guess I'll have to wait 'til monday..1

I'm on the verge of breaking this shit Windows based work laptop (Dell, so called i5, yes it's outdated but still) with idk what.
15 and a half mins since bootup and I've not been able to access Microsoft Outlook.6 -
MDN best practice recommends not to sniff browser versions but rather detect features. So far, so good. In reality, we don't need to detect features, we need to detect bugs to handle outdated mobile Safari versions. Apple again. 🍎🍏🤢🤮

I’m working 2 jobs at the moment, putting 12+ hours/day, been doing for about 2 months and I’m already burned out;
I’m working for a big e-commerce agency which is about to get bigger, doing mostly outdated Frontend work (Magento) with no sign of raises/promotions/ real growth, since all clients are basically enterprise and only want “ol’ reliable” over innovative.
A lot of smart people, lot of knowledge, pay is fair.
The second job I’m doing (part-time) is for a smaller agency in the same sector, pay is a bit higher, closer time zone and an opportunity to work with newer technologies.
I need to make a decision on one of these two companies since I can’t possibly keep working all these hours.
Is there anything else I need to consider before making a decision?
As a Frontend developer I’m getting a bit tired of working with Magento and its outdated tools, but at the same time seems difficult to switch to something different since I haven’t really worked with anything else, I feel a little bit lost5 -
Apple, please roll out the latest Safari to older iOS versions at last! Don't let it stay the new Internet Explorer making us web developers mad about obscure issues that customers face having to use outdated browsers, overshadowing any joy about your latest achievements.2
-
To the web devs here: What resources would you recommend for catching up a little to the web development state of the art? The last time I have designed anything HTML5/CSS3 were just being introduced. So my knowledge is pretty outdated, but I'm note starting from zero. I'm looking for some best practices and something framework-agnostic would be nice. Unless you say “Dude it's 2017, nobody even boils water without using *.js”, of course.9

Habitual of pressing ctrl+s many times because of so many crashes in my outdated pc.
Today I tried to press ctrl+s while writing on a physical paper.2 -
I’ve been working in a toxic environment for the past 1.5 years and realized that I’m actually going to have a tough time finding a job outside because my coding skills has gone to rust (been delegated to mostly support role in a startup, almost IT support or project mgmt).
I recently did an interview for a C++ gig and was rejected due to not being sufficient enough.
I’m actually really feeling defeated. It almost feels like I’ve falling into a trap I can’t get out of. I could use some advice6 -
I want to implement a functionality, I use framework X with cms Y.
40% of the libraries I find are outdated, 20% just don't work, 20% offer partial functionality but don't do what I want them to do and the rest just seem excruciatingly hard to implement
I'll try to put something together myself, not sure how it will work out3
