Our university syllabus is so outdated, we are forced to do C programs in TurboC.
So we install Dosbox on Windows 8 machines...

Are you serious? Are you afraid of an SQL injection or something, and instead of properly sanitizing your queries you disallow characters? Or is your software and database so outdated that you're afraid special characters will break it? Goodbye security15

Manager: I can’t believe you use Linux, that is such an outdated operating system. You need to get with the times and move to a more modern one like Windows or Mac. Literally NOBODY uses Linux anymore, do you still go to Blockbuster Video too? Ha!
Dev: …
I’m starting to realize that 80% of my job is resisting the urge to punch this guy in the face. Thanks goodness for remote work.33 -
Thank you dear mr. boss for fucking up our master branch by adding local changes to a 2 months outdated master branch (250 FUCKING COMMITS BEHIND), pull the remote and then just push without resolving any conflicts!!!1!!!
But thank you so much for sending me an email at 10pm asking me to resolve the conflicts.
It is 3 in the morning and it took 1 hour to get it clean.
Sometimes I want to break some necks...9 -
Today I learnt from a more experienced Dev that using git as versioning system makes the code open source.18

The company I work for...
Has:
1. No CI/CD
2. SVN instead of GIT
3. Outsourcing to India (oof)
4. No Automated Testing
5. Uses Bugnet (ancient, outdated)
6. No clearly defined code standards
7. No real documentation on the code
8. Rubbish code
9. No desire to reduce technical debt
10. Poorly maintained DB
11. Poor outdated equipment
12. A useless PM
13. Still priotizes IE support (??)
On a scale of 1 to 10 how fucked is this company and anything they develop?41 -
Client: "Hey we want you to integrate your product with our system."

Client: "O auth what?"
Me: " You know, the current standard for REST API authentication and authorisation"
Client: " What's REST?"

FUCK!!! FUCK IT ALL. FUCK YOU AND YOUR CRAPPY BULLSHT UNDOCUMENTED AND OUTDATED API.
YOUR DATABASE SERVER BACK-END HAS TO BE THE ONE MANAGING THE DISPLAY DATA FOR ITS WEB AND MOBILE CLIENTS. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND, DAMN IT.
I'M NOT GONNA SIT HERE ALL DAY HARD-CODING ALL YOUR SERVER'S INADEQUACY.
MAKES ME WONDER DO YOU EVER USE DESIGN PATTERNS OR APPLY DESIGN PRINCIPLES? DRY AT LEAST? DON'T FUCKING REPEAT YOURSELF, DAMN IT.
I CAN'T WAIT TO LEAVE THIS PLACE FOR GOOD.6 -
I was tasked with maintaining a handful of chemistry simulations for the web. First things first, replace these outdated links and turn them into Bootstrap buttons that work on mobile. Wait, why do all of these look so horrible on mobile? nothing's scaling properly. *looks at fucking 1,000-line CSS file* The old developers used position:absolute for absolutely EVERYTHING. And I counted one div on the entire page. This is why you don't trust chem engineers to do your "web design" #FuckDreamweaver7

I've recently red a blog post stating 'Google leaves x Million Android devices vulnerable to a new Exploit'
I don't really sympathize with Google, but it's simply the wrong message... It should be more like FUCK VENDORS, WHO WON'T SUPPLY UPDATES TO DEVICES OLDER THAN 1.5 YEARS
Seriously, it's them who make you stuck on outdated OS versions... Just imagine you could only install Windows Vista on your 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad, because it's considered outdated...
FUCK VENDORS (again, just in case)8 -
Spending my 23rd birthday in a server room 700 km away from home, discussing the requirements for app deployment. Yep. Every dev's dream.15

I once had to literally hack a Joomla 1.5.x site for a client, because they did not find the passwords (hosting, cms, ftp, mysql). After 5 minutes and a SQL injection I was in like flynn.
The site was already full of hidden links to viagra sellers and stuff... 😂1 -

University logic - Provide outdated curriculum. Drop current relevant stuff from the course. Use a legacy software that has no applications anymore. Expect the student to be a master at a technology without documentation.5

So my job doesnt use any version control. They just edit the files directly from the network drive. Wtf? Is this the 90's?4

I actually like Microsoft these days. Despite developing on Mac machines, we use VSTS for code repo, build/release pipelines and work item tracking, and Azure for all things cloud. It all works incredibly well together and at low cost.
Microsoft has changed ethos massively in the last few years. In my opinion, the classic dev mantra of “Microsoft is shit and evil, Linux is flawless” is outdated and getting kind of boring.6 -
Interveiwer: Do you like what you've learnt so far from your course in uni?
Me: sorry, but no the things they taught us were horrible and outdated and I only think of it as a legal requirement.

Remove all the outdated and unwanted topics which were taught during Indus Valley civilization like: 8080 microprocessor, Java 6, Software Testing principles etc. And add more interesting and realistic topics like: Algorithm design, graphs and other data structures, Java 8 (at least for now), big data, Basics about AI, etc.7

This is my desktop setup reveal 1 of 2, I wasn't sure about the monitor stand (which is why I only got the 2-arm) but really love the extra space it gave me.

Qualifications and experience require to start a WordPress consultancy/brand agency:
• Be a marketing/people person.
• No technical requirements required.
Hate seeing others get clients and delivering half-assed solutions and deploying outdated and even insecure versions of everything.5 -
Nothing screams panic like accidentally deploying an older, broken staging build, that also run outdated database migrations on start, straight to production3

Sooo I've been working on an ancient php 5.6 project that did not have any documentation and was a homemade "framework" created 7 years ago. The original creator is long gone and no one else knows a lot about this project.
When I first looked into it I almost immediately noticed the security flaws...
Old outdated libraries
a "development" feature to easily turn dev mode on/off
BY A GET PARAMETER!
it spits out full sql queries and php warnings -.-
Oh and did I mention that the site is a webshop.... and has a backdoor password?

Any firmware developers like me here?? .!! The second class citizens of the world of software development.... People who code in outdated languages, use outdated tools(console print is a luxury) to create cool stuff.3

My current project is a fucking nightmare.
It started in 2007, using a solution developed by an Indian company due to outsourcing (aka low-quality code).
It's running on Java 7 on the back-end and its front-end side is pure Javascript files. There are thousands of little .js files everywhere, no documentation, no comments, differents coding styles, outdated API that were already outdated at the time, mixed oop and procedural.
Not even when I started coding, I wrote something so horrible.
Yo, it's a clusterfuck and I just wanna get drunk.5 -
Yes former technical person who is now a business person. Please, please advise me on my job with your decaying outdated skills. Yes, google for me. I didn't know how to do that. Ah wonderful yes, you recall this being "easy" which is why you quit the field. What a nice time this is.4

Its my morning rant time... Me and my team are working on implementing our solution into 20 year old piece of shit POS system which:
1. Uses old piece of shit computers - which is slower than average calculator.
2. Uses .Net 2.0 - and no higher versions could be installed.
3. Has 20 year old documentation - outdated as fuck.
4. Throws unknown and non explainable COMExceptions.
5. Works slow as fuck.
And we have to deal with all its issues as 3rd side integration.. FUCK... FUCK.. FUCK....8 -
Today my grandmother called and told me she wasnt able to login to her account for her ISP. Alright, maybe shes confused about the passwords as we had to change it recently. No, turns out they still have this "oh sorry you typed your password incorrect three times, so we will lock your account and your granny have to do the 2 hour telephone queue"
You and your fucking outdated auth practise can go and kindly fuck yourself. Fix this shit before I get real mad.5 -
Today in IT class our teacher said: 'you can only use char and int in a switch statement'
I was confused because I was 100% sure that you could also use string and so when I got out of school I immediately looked it up.
It is true, well it was true until 2011 when Java 7 was released which added the possibility to also use the string data type in switch statements.
In this I see a huge problem with the education system. Teachers (almost) never 'update' their knowledge and then teach outdated stuff to their pupils. While this may not be a problem in some subjects, it definitely is a huge problem in IT.
The development world is always evolving but if the teachers don't follow along the pupils get taught outdated stuff which, in my opinion, is a really big problem when they finish school and go out in the world to find jobs.9 -
From Sarah Connor Chronicles, 2008: "They used to think that 12 nanometer scale was impossible. The circuits are so tiny, you're all but in the quantum realm. It's the most sophisticated processor on earth. If you could take your memories, your consciousness, everything that makes you a person, turn it into pure data, and download it onto a machine, that chip could run it."
I'm watching the DVD on a quadcore Ryzen APU that is built in 12nm, and it was already outdated when I bought it last year. I guess I better download myself to my laptop because that's a 7nm Ryzen.14 -
Bethesda is full of shit. Starfield somehow needs a super new PC because it alledgedly uses modern SW tech.
Strange point: while a high-end PC with 7800X3D and 4090 makes the performance bearable (though not great), the graphics don't look spectacular. In fact, they look outdated.
No Bethesda, you don't use modern tech. You require modern HW tech to make up somewhat for your shitty engine and incompetent devs.15 -
Did a code test at an interview, had to aggregate data from a db. They stored cities with population count and users referenced cities.. 6 cities had a higher user count than population 🤔
They were a little taken back and suggested the population data must be outdated 😉.. it got a bit awkward1 -
So having gotten my hands on the books I need for the next semester I decided to go take a look at what's in them.
Now the first is mostly web stuff and the second is just about software design. It starts off with an introduction to HTML5, where they didn't really teach HTML5, more like they taught HTML3/4 but not in a way that was too dangerous. I can tolerate not having my semantic tags tbh. They also used spaces on both sides of the = for some reason.
Then a CSS chapter which was also surprisingly mediocre. They didn't use a dedicated CSS file, but I can live with that, for starters.
Then there were some surprisingly decent JS chapters. Although they did use newlines before their { kinda miffed me. There has also been a few developments since this books release, but tbh this isn't the worst case of outdatedness. (And at least they didn't use jquery when teaching JS)
Then a chapter on SQL which I ignored.
Then a chapter about PHP, and, uhm, when did this book get released? Well the ISBN is 978-0-13-215100-9 and using the power of Google we can reveal it was published in.. 2011..
I'm quite happy that I already know how to program12 -
Read source code and unit tests. Don’t bother documentation cause it’s outdated. Dig into the core, look where data goes in and where it gets out. Everything else is just a wrapper.6

When some one at the company decides to branch off from the main codebase and end up with several outdated and separetely modified branches for two years.

After 2 years at the uni with 6 programming courses, I stopped studying and started working.
So I kinda left with some expectation or demand for some level of standard, not the highest, but at least not expecting diarrea dog shit level of quality.
On my first jobs, I was pretty shocked with their outdated technologies, terrible workflows, insanely unsafe setups and vomit inducing management. I thought "this isn't normal, this shouldn't be happening"
After being for a week on devrant, I now think the opposite is not normal. -
This fucking teacher was my "Web Design" teacher in high school.
Okay, yes, I acknowledge that this is an entry level course, but does that honestly mean that we need to teach the same source taught to students in the 90s? You know, the one where all layouts are table/iframe-based?
I understand that I completely disregarded your set criteria for grading by using CSS to create my website rather than tables and I frames, however I believe that it's fairly logical to conclude that anyone using CSS has a sufficient comprehension of HTML to be able to pass your stupid assignments. So why must time be wasted with coding poorly designed sites? -
When looking something up, I generally try to avoid StackOverflow answers and find actual documentation, since SO answers are usually outdated.2

Richard Hendricks is becoming less believable all the time. In season 3, they staffed their company with a crew of offshore devs and worked intimately over video chat, and it worked perfectly! They produced a product that wasn't exactly what the world wanted, but it was exactly what Richard wanted.
Now, in season 5, they're completely ignoring their previous success, and hiring/managing the most expensive devs in the world, and enforcing an outdated, "be at your desk" policy.
And they're having huge problems with it. Go figure.1 -

Not dev, but IT...
Just found out that one section of my place of work still uses floppy disks. No I’m not fucking kidding. The other sad part? We still have the outdated computers to read them. 😩😂
Please, send help or a job application...5 -
Who else hates tutorials.
They are made with so much text and outdated code that it’s better to write the thing needed by yourself and stack overflow.🤔4 -
Had an interesting application for a web / fs position the other day. Some guy in his 40s sent a CV, along with a bunch of 5+ years old reference letters (recommending him for things like PHP 5.3 and ExtJs 4). A bit outdated but okay.
And then, he put in a list of NPM packages he used. Not just relevant frameworks like Angular & React, or tools like Webpack and Babel. No. A list. Of. NPM. Packages. There were things like UUID there, which is literary a single function!2 -
The legacy codebase, episode 4584985948:

In 2 weeks FOSDEM will be held in Brussels. I'll be going with some friends. Are you coming as well? Perhaps we could do a little meetup at the event?
Poettering will be speaking at the event as well btw. Presenting.. systemd-homed, a new systemd component. I shit you not. The "outdated" home directories are to be replaced by a service. Home directories as a service, the next big thing?

I like my work, don't get me wrong, but any time I need to work with this fucking 12 years old project that has so many conflicting branches, css that remembers float layouts, half of the files not being tracked, ruby dependencies that are a decade outdated I just want to quit.2

Why the hell is JS so terrible, and why do so many people resort to using is as a back end. So many packages, so many outdated dependencies. My coworkers and friends have heard me rant about my constant frustration with this terrible setup.
I understand the need for dynamic html but why have we bastardized this language to the extent we have.
Keep your projects up to date, it saves people a lot of trouble in the future.8 -
Thanks Android 14. Now we have to install outdated apk's with adb and a flag 🙄. May apply to devRant too.17

Guys may i have your opinion please.
Should i take a job opportunity seriously if they are asking me to do an AngularJS code challenge?
Taking into consideration that AngularJS became outdated or legacy few months ago.
What do you think35 -
The best kinds of comments:

Honestly, no documentation is better in some cases. At least I can't be angry about their shitty quality... And they don't waste my time.1 -
"Web" Teacher wanted us to learn horribly outdated html in the middle of web2.0 wave.
HTML5 ? CSS3 ? nope.
No CSS at all, and longest part of the class was on the importance of prehistoric HTML doctypes.
Capitalized tags, tables, BGCOLOR attributes...
Like she scrapped everything on W3schools...1 -
I've written a rant that was too long to devRant, so I made it into a medium article instead. You can read it here:
https://medium.com/bambuu/...
In short, it's about Apple's weird legal practices when it comes to Apple Developer accounts.
tl;dr
- Apple has "obvious" security reasons that requires a copy of a photo id, and you aren't allowed to conceal sensitive information
- Apple's favorite form of communication is fax and snail mail
- Apple needs multiple signatures and court documents to just change your account name. -
that feel when you finally find software that perfectly fits your needs..... but find the download page is on sourceforge.net, last updated in 2002.

Fucking MikTex.
Apparently this software got stuck somewhere back in the nineties. Got a fresh installation to make sure issues were not arising from outdated hardware - still connection errors, API errors, horrible, unresponsive and ugly UI, what a broken piece of ****.7 -
Planned on installing Linux, for the first time, on a old computer today. Turns out you need a usb-stick to install it from. Minimum 2gb. - No problem, I thought, because I have a old stick in a drawer. Turns out it was on 128mb. Outdated technology. Time to go shopping.4

The company I work for uses Coldfusion which is a dead technology in my opinion. I was tasked with using a data grid for our data from our mssql databases. This data grid I was trying out uses ajax to make a call to the server and expects the data transfered back in Json format. well coldfusion sucks balls because it's serializeJson function returns a outdated JSON structure and I can't use it. So obviously this datagrid throws errors and when I try looking up coldfusion solutions online or scope out stack overflow, the posts are dated like 6 years back because no one fucking uses CF anymore. My boss loves to jerk to it, it seems because he refuses to change languages cause its all they have ever used. -_- this is 2016 bitch lol6

Our teacher is forcing us to code in an outdated version of a really bad IDE to write basic C, we can't use anything else!
The IDE is bad and crashes often, and I can't even do anything about it!
I suggested various IDE such as visual studios but nope!10 -
Oh my gosh. Windows is...eh..
I mean, it is outdated and slow, has bugs and many other stuff, but do you know why I use it? It is widely supported.
Compare application support on Mac or Linux! It is nothing compared to Windows.
However, I will still have to deal with it for a very very long time...3 -
Hey seniors:
Let's make a rant and name some old technologies that have been frequently used and now they are obsolete12 -
This is the best example of google giving a fuck about their own guidelines.
They always ram their expectations of you making your apps fit the guidelines a 100% into you, but then they give a fuck about heir guidelines in their own software.
They use a ListView here in google contacts. It's completely outdated for a large amount of data, such as my 200 contacts. They literally push you not to use outdated techniques such as ListViews in your app. Use RecyclerViews, our completely new solution instead. ListViews are very very bad in performance.
I KNOW THIS SOUNDS PICKY, BUT THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE!!! THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THEIR OWN GUIDELINES IN EVRY WAY! BEST OTHER EXAMPLE IS GOOGLE PLAY STORE. BAD PERFORMANCE 100%. BUT AT LEAST IT HAS RUCKLING ANIMATIONS.4 -
I've been skimming this slightly outdated "Learning Android" O'Reilly text and I found the error log levels to be colorful enough to be amusing...4

As an CS college drop-out I have nothing to add than what has already been said, outdated material and barely used languages with paper coding / exams and listening to an old geeze about when he programmed in 1942.. you get it..
Not that I lack respect for what the man did back then but it seems rather unrelated in today's times.
So now it's stockmen work while own study, working on small projects and learning with mates and amazing camp platforms now and again.2 -
Spending the day sending emails back and forth with your client because they can't be bothered to prepare a single overview of what properties the endpoint expects, and instead expect you to piece it together from 6 PDFs of which at least 2 contain contradicting information, another is outdated, and the last one seems to have been exported from word and is missing half the content.
Fun times! -

A few days ago our server was compromised due to an outdated Jenkins version. The malicious user installed a crypto miner on the server... The same day that it was found I told management that I'm interested in helping out with the server. Since then, nothing happened... No updates, no security measures, no nothing (except for the removed crypto miner and updated Jenkins software)
Oh well only a matter of time before another hack...
Question to some (who work way way way longer than me) med - seniors, should I make a big deal out of this? And keep pressure on it. Or should I just leave it be and wait for the next comprised server? I know devrant is not a Q&A service, but some dev to dev advice is much appreciated.

When you're looking for that really peculiar problem on Google with mandatory generic words, but the results are everything except what you fucking wanted :
- <the main page of that language>
- <"how to" useless videos with no relation to what you're looking for whatsoever>
- <some more unrelated stuff>
- <outdated forbidden techniques>
- <Chinese gibberish>
- <something that looks like what you looking for, with no answers>
- "how to summon a demon (not clickbait!)"
At this point you either explore the unexplored lands (aka page 2 and beyond, or using Bing or Yahoo), or accept your fate.3 -
Anyone else thinks the internet is outdated and doesn't suit the needs of today? We can't keep patching it up forever.4

There's this company that works in the RPA (Robotic Process Automation) domain, they describe their work as using A.I and Machine Learning to collect Big Data whilst following the latest trends in IoT, Blockchain, Web 6.9, and any other fancy term they can use while in fact, well... They're using an outdated software that uses vb6 modules to scrap some images and no employee have ever written a single line of code.

The outdated dependencies meant we needed 25 engineers for 2 months full-time to make the upgrade as invisible to users as possible. We still took about 90 minutes of downtime on cutover day. Not upgrading MySQL on time meant we paid way more in terms of engineering hours. The reason we call it debt, is because you pay interest when you don’t tKe care of it right away.4

Does anyone else feel that "retirement" is an outdated concept? Our generation will probably never truly retire, not in the same sense that this word meant in 20th century.
Considering how much the government-mandated retirement age went up; most of us will prolly die from continuous stress way before the day of "retirement" comes7 -
Official documentation > StackOverflow.
StackOverflow sometimes has well-grounded and elaborate explanations on a question by well-meaning and knowledgeable developers, but oftentimes the answers also contain outdated or 'dirty' solutions and so it's always to be taken with a grain of salt.
However, in cases like the official Spring documentation, the IETF RFC's and the MDN, those provide a correct explanation to the problem, even if it requires some reading around. When it comes to serious and correct work, I favor these over the bro-zone that is StackOverflow.6 -
Working for one of our oldest customer, in some serious old, ugly and outdated code(web service).
The dev db doesn't contain any relevant data.
The QA service points to production, so can't use it for any tests.
My contact, at the customer, is going on vacation tomorrow.
Their pm is going on vacation next Friday.
No time for refactoring, db data updates or otherwise do important and much needed updates.
They want it to be done yesterday.

I fuckin give up.
You can't use Android without fuckin gapps, you can but it's fuckin miserable.
And microG still sucks (I respect all the effort from the devs tho)
And there are not enough roms that implement signature spoofing
Almost all the open source apps look like shit and are outdated (also appreciate the devs efforts)

My lovely team and I inherited a legacy app written in Angular 14.
We love it when we get fucked by Pajeets like this.
We love tons of `any`-s in the codebase.
We love unreadable code with 5 levels of nested ternary operators.
We love the lack of a README on how to actually build/start the app.
We love the outdated dependencies.
And we absolutely love it when you use a paid package that costs $1755.4 -
I try to do one thing, I try to make one thing a little better and the universe shovels shit in my face. I’m just trying fix all this old outdated shot and I keep getting shit on in so many ways. I’m trying so hard to not become a bitter angry old man but damn if I don’t understand the bitter angry old mans motives right now. Fuck this ongoing onslaught of crashes and shit shows.

Update syllabus with latest technologies instead of teaching some outdated language which has no practical use in the market.

Every time we have finished a project and deployed it the first time at least half of the components are outdated already 😒 Even if we worked only 2 weeks on something.

Had to create a quick server side script. Created a quick function that returns an array, and tried to access a value from the function call like this:
$val = func()[0]
Apparently php didn’t include that feature until PHP 5.4
Wtf PHP.
Log into my webhost to update the the PHP version; only to discover that the highest PHP is PHP 5.5. PHP 7 is the current revision.
Wtf a2hosting.8 -
So today I gave my superiors at work a piece of my mind about the pc I sit on (I was/am not happy about it). I am expected to use Photoshop and Illustrator on a pc with 8gb ddr3 1333mhz and no graphics card, except for the one integrated in Intel's processor, which also is super outdated. Like you couldn't get more than $80 for the entire machine. So, today I ranted towards them irl and my message has finally seemed to sink in. Fuck.

Started my summer internship at a company working on their codebase about two weeks ago. I expected a lot of differences from school, but not this much. I still have no clue what I'm doing. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting stuff done, and it's helping out, but I still have no idea what is going on.
Oh, also, we use outdated Javascript frameworks... I don't actually know Javascript yet but we're just gonna roll with it2 -

Realised I was working with the outdated version of JavaScript library and all my months effort needs redo. Shit!!! Why do devs change code so much that backward compatibility becomes an issue.....2 -
What's worse than WordPress? WordPress + WooCommerce! What's worse than WordPress + WooCommerce? WordPress + WooCommerce + PayPal! What other more shitty software could we possibly add? So, if you were supposed to work on a website that is already pretty shitty coded, shitty styled and outdated... Would you go on coding like shit for the sake of consistency or would you embed a new mini-system in it trying to pay some fucking respect to everything you have learned?

To the web devs here: What resources would you recommend for catching up a little to the web development state of the art? The last time I have designed anything HTML5/CSS3 were just being introduced. So my knowledge is pretty outdated, but I'm note starting from zero. I'm looking for some best practices and something framework-agnostic would be nice. Unless you say “Dude it's 2017, nobody even boils water without using *.js”, of course.9

So recently I've been getting a bit tired of my countrie's slow and outdated-ass politics combined with the old-ass leadership.
I make an effort to come over as a liberal in public when I'm under people but sometimes..sometimes it's getting a bit hard.8 -
When you give a basic touch of modern design to a README and critize their replies they end the conversation with
'locked and limited conversation to collaborators'
'We appreciate the effort'
Sure doesn't look like it.
'X is highly specialized software'
Like most other software? And?
'The docs are fairly out of date, and need a complete rewrite, not this kind of graphical adjustment, so it would do more harm than good to present information of how to run this application in a secondary page along with random outdated info.'
So you are too lazy to update them, probably won't for a long time and have a problem with updating the outdated information's design despite that not actually changing the situation.
Disregarding the fact that the 'graphical adjustment' work even if you update the content.
Got it, right.36 -
I just wanna find docs
I search for my problem
why the hell are there 300 links to random people with outdated methods trying to tell you how to do something
I just want the man pages, ffs
I blame @SidTheITGuy saying we are all sitting on gold mines of information and should really become YouTube celebrities dispensing such knowledge10 -
Do you ever feel so down that you realize you've been writing shit code which does nothing productive and you've been just reinventing the wheel? Like, being in a confused state of being doubtful and afraid of being outdated coz you don't know any future proof tech? I'm in the final year of CS undergrad and this feeling sucks.3

My university had its half-abandoned tenth floor reserved for fringe scientists. To deter onlookers from going there, the only elevator was locked out, reserved only for uni staff.
As long as you didn’t make drugs there, you were fine. It was dusty, smelled of mold and was full of old Soviet gear. Outdated, sure, but better than nothing.
If you were a student preoccupied with some fringe theory, it was a safe space for you.1 -
Now I also experienced the corporate IT - hell.
I'm an apprentice at a small but branch of a fairly big company.
We get a fuckton of guidelines from our IT-HQ, plenty of them outdated.
We can't even decide how to configure our firewalls our self, but get them preconfigured from the HQ.
They micromanage us so hard, we can't even put a switch in a room, without having to arrange that shit with them.1 -

Wow, I thought Australia's subjects were up-to date with modern technology, but as my year 11 IPT course has proven... No.
Genuine Questions from it:
• Where are Web pages stored?
Most web pages are dynamically generated, so... RAM?
•Locate one webpage that uses ASP. Save a copy of this webpage (file name must = asp.mht)
Chrome Doesn't Even Support that as a save able file format any more!!!!
•Visit the webpage [error 404 anyway why write it]
Wow I can click hyperlinks I thought it was just a fancy color added to the text :|
•Add this webpage to your favorites. Supply one (1) screenshot showing this webpage as one of your favorites.
I ask; Who hasn't bookmarked a webpage in their life at the age of 17, and who actually calls them favorites.
•Press the "Back" Button to view the page you were previously on, take a screen shot to prove you doing so.
I am a rebel, I used my magic fingers to press the button without a mouse (keyboard shortcut)
•Press the "Forward" Button to view the page you were on before you went backwards, take a screen shot to prove you doing so.
I never would of guessed :|
•Take a screen shot after opening multiple tabs in Internet Explorer
...
•View the HTML source of the webpage www.google.com, and save a screen shot
Why not the actual file, really? bloat much?
•Take one screen shot of your Internet Explorer Search History
Stalky much?
•What is a Web browser and what tasks does it perform?
Well.... Do you have a page for indepth analyse? Or do you literally what me to say "It let's you load stuff from dat interwebz, via requesting content from a server"
•Define what JavaScript is in relation to web pages
Are we talking server side? or client?
•Define what CSS is in relation to web pages

I’m working 2 jobs at the moment, putting 12+ hours/day, been doing for about 2 months and I’m already burned out;
I’m working for a big e-commerce agency which is about to get bigger, doing mostly outdated Frontend work (Magento) with no sign of raises/promotions/ real growth, since all clients are basically enterprise and only want “ol’ reliable” over innovative.
A lot of smart people, lot of knowledge, pay is fair.
The second job I’m doing (part-time) is for a smaller agency in the same sector, pay is a bit higher, closer time zone and an opportunity to work with newer technologies.
I need to make a decision on one of these two companies since I can’t possibly keep working all these hours.
Is there anything else I need to consider before making a decision?
As a Frontend developer I’m getting a bit tired of working with Magento and its outdated tools, but at the same time seems difficult to switch to something different since I haven’t really worked with anything else, I feel a little bit lost5 -
When I was studying web integrator.
At first I didn't even know html, yet alone what a php tag or extension meant.
I quickly caught onto it though and started to grasp that the procedural stuff they taught was really outdated.
So I researched intensely and eventually whipped up my very own php framework.

Obviously it's a pile of fungal infested dung.
but ey, I was light years ahead of the rest of the class.
Besides, we all gotta stackoverflow somewhere :) -

Every tool in the JS ecosystem goes out of its way to support faulty or outdated variants of every interface, yet nothing is actually forgiving or fault tolerant. Publishing packages is exactly as agonizing as consuming them, even though both sides have tens of switches and probably hundreds of automatic heuristics to align themselves to any hypothetical setup on the opposite end.2

I just found out YouTube ReVanced now has a kind of working patcher for android. It was easy to use and I don't have to use outdated vanced anymore. I can also choose which individual patches I want to used.
It's really nice. Even for people who don't want adblock and only want dislikes back since you can just disable that patch. I don't get why anyone wouldn't want to use it.13 -
I just rsync my current project with one that is a week outdated. Instead of pushing, I pulled the update. Worst, it had a --delete flag.

Am considering quitting college and learning online. It's much better for me personally. I have learned more via Internet in a week than what I did from college in years. I am from India. Most of what they teach is pretty much useless & outdated and the teachers seem to think of technology as a static thing. I don't know if I can ever convince my parents to let me quit. What they think is college = job = good life. Thanks for letting me post here. Had to let it out.20

I want to implement a functionality, I use framework X with cms Y.
40% of the libraries I find are outdated, 20% just don't work, 20% offer partial functionality but don't do what I want them to do and the rest just seem excruciatingly hard to implement
I'll try to put something together myself, not sure how it will work out3 -
MDN best practice recommends not to sniff browser versions but rather detect features. So far, so good. In reality, we don't need to detect features, we need to detect bugs to handle outdated mobile Safari versions. Apple again. 🍎🍏🤢🤮

Never, ever, ever stop learning. And I don't mean sitting in a classroom overpaying for outdated information. Read blogs, news sites, community driven content. Find that thing that only a handful of people are talking about and learn it. Then do that again, and again. The second you stop learning, you'll be left behind. Does that mean you'll be unemployed, or find it impossible to do find work, no, not immediately. But if you stand still looking enough to gather some dust, you'll soon be part of the dust.

Rant.
Our dev tooling is not in order.
Names of classes do not represent what they do.
Filename is different from class name and there are multiple classes per file.
I try to fix this hot spaghettis mess and off course our outdated source control gives another barrier! FFS6 -
Apple, please roll out the latest Safari to older iOS versions at last! Don't let it stay the new Internet Explorer making us web developers mad about obscure issues that customers face having to use outdated browsers, overshadowing any joy about your latest achievements.2

I shall delay your PR with my giant egotistical scrotum by:
- Use less words for your function name
- Use this obscure pattern you have not learnt in your outdated compsci degree
- Each loop should get their own function
- Your function has too many parameters
- You must name every instance of magic numbers / strings
- Here, have another obscure test case to write9 -
!rant, but not sure if it's a question either.
I've kind of run into a wall when it comes to programming lately. I'm following this course on Udemy for Python, but the next section (that I need to do to be able to continue) uses (outdated) bokeh stuff, and I don't know enough to be able to figure out how to get the same output without much hair-tearing and frustration.
To clarify, the videos uses bokeh.charts, but then there's a note added that says to use bkcharts, which is still outdated, so it doesn't help at all. I did contact the course tutor about it, and he is aware of it but he's got a lot of stuff going on, so I don't know when he'll have time to fix it. In the meantime, I'm stuck and severely lacking in the intellectual stimulation that is programming. :(
I -have- been trying to work on independent projects, but my problem is mostly that I just don't seem to be a frontend kinda guy, so I end up with only halfway-finished stuff. Does any poor soul here have advice on where to look, or (less likely) even have time to explain some stuff?2 -
Is it normal to find yourself spending days sifting through documentation, often outdated, when learning new tools/frameworks as a developer? Sometimes finding myself doing this just to write 2 lines of code to interface something/configuration and I’m not sure if I’m better off just forcefully coding my own fix while knowing there’s a solution out there in the haystack.2

I’ve been working in a toxic environment for the past 1.5 years and realized that I’m actually going to have a tough time finding a job outside because my coding skills has gone to rust (been delegated to mostly support role in a startup, almost IT support or project mgmt).
I recently did an interview for a C++ gig and was rejected due to not being sufficient enough.
I’m actually really feeling defeated. It almost feels like I’ve falling into a trap I can’t get out of. I could use some advice6 -
Not really documentation, but actually the user manual for a corporate online ebanking system for dealing with EPF/ETF. The instructions were very very vague, and when we called the bank for clarification, they said that some of the stuff in the manual was outdated/not relevant anymore. Like what the fuck man?

Well, I thought "hey, I need to urgently update my own infra for a change, been neglecting this way too long, but should not be longer then a day."
I spent the whole weekend dependency resolving, modulesyncing and ensure deps are met ... And every single goddamn time it's stdlib causing a whoupsie on another module...
Oh at least I am having fun. Sort of.1 -
Give up trying to change CS education since current formal education systems used since the prehistoric times are unable to teach CS properly. Instead, tell the students from day 1: "What you'll learn is either already outdated or will be outdated by the time you graduate. Be ready to learn stuff by yourselves or switch your major."

Does anyone hate debugging something for a couple of hours just to find out it was you misspelling something that somehow managed to not cause an error?
Also what are the worst things to have that cause a error? Like dependency being outdated and not being notified etc.5 -
Borrowing a JavaScript book from the school library and realizing that it was published years ago and is very outdated because it always refers to the compatibility with Internet Explorer. I'm not sure if I should continue because after all, it's the basics. Maybe it's worth returning already... or maybe not because I don't always have access to the internet, but a book is easily accesible with or without internet.3

The JavaScript community should invent the word "outd" to use instead of "outdated" just to make sure they give forewarning about frameworks and tools going out of fashion, because by the time they spell the full word it's already too late and a post-mortem announcement.

I have a bookshelf full of tech books. What should I do with outdated ones? What approach should I take to buying new ones? A lot of them are probably irrelevant now. Things that don't change significantly are fine (I have old C++ and Make books whose content is still relevant even if some new stuff is missing) but web development has evolved significantly and I'm reluctant to get anything framework related due to needing to replace books frequently.
I could get ebooks, but having tried a few, I much prefer a physical book.
In the case of old books I no longer need, I can recycle them (as waste paper, or at a book recycling place) or donate them to a charity shop. It seems silly to recycle them as waste paper, but on the other hand I doubt the content will be that useful to others nor will it be that useful in a charity shop!
So instead they just sit on my shelf and remain unused...
What do you folks do with your books when you don't need them any more?3 -
Those 'HR tools'. 'Workforce Management'.
Once the company commits to it, they stay in use long after their interfaces have become clunky, their features outdated. Pretty bad UX.

Working with dildos-for-brain people! I asked how to achieve something and if I got an answer it stated: never saw something like that implemented before (It really means that people here just copy/paste shit and use iterative development method until they nab the solution)!!!
Really? I just asked to have nested XML structure, it's been around since early 90'!
I have new weekend project - polish my CV and get the fuck out of here. When it feels like you are smartest in the room and for every question for help people just throw you random answers not related to question at all it is not worth staying there.
Also using outdated XML server CMS that ceased its support, documentation is shoddy and internet never heard of it - only relevant google search leads to the CMS website. Good luck! Good fucking luck!
This shit went overboard so many times and I decided that this is the last time. I have 2 more fucks to give and those are for me! -
Got a documentation from the customer. The first thing I saw was that the source code is in SourceSafe. Holy shit I was shocked when I saw that and immediately sent back a list of arguments why SourceSafe sucks and that we use git. Shortly after that the customer called me. The documentation is outdated they also use git. What a shock on Monday morning.1

Remove it completly. There is no point in forcing it on children, governments are too slow to deliver a proper education plan that is not horrible outdated and proper coding teachers are non-existant.
Instead they shoul focus on STEM and provide computer clubs that are not based around grades and education plans.1 -
So yesterday I had to do some windows updates.
Today, I turn my laptop back on and notice I don't have sound.
Alright, I'll just see if I have some outdated drivers. Oh, I have 3, and one it's the sound driver! Cool, let me just update that. What do you mean I can't? Alright, let me try this app I have installed to see if it can update everything for me. It did, great!
Oh, but now the sound is coming from my earphones AND the speaker... Let me check the app again. Nothing. Let me check the drivers again. Detection verification is outdated. Alright, I'll just update that one, no big deal. Windows could not find drivers? Alright, let's see if windows update can find something! Nothing.
Okay, let's check sound definitions. What about troubleshooting? Still nothing?
Well, now I'm pissed. Let's see what the internet thinks I should do. Almost one hour later, I've tried everything I can think of and still can't fix this. Fml8 -

I currently have a 3+ year old laptop.
Dell Inspiron 15 3521:
OS: Windows 10 Pro
RAM: 8GB (4+4)
Processor: Intel Core i5 3rd Gen
Video/Graphics Card: AMD Radeon 8730M 2GB (and Intel HD 4000)
Hard Disk: 1TB
It's slowly becoming sluggish and has clearly outdated hardware. I want to pursue a Master's degree in CS (Machine Learning oriented).
Should I consider upgrading? Build a PC instead? Suggestions?35 -

Is it possible to base a custom GTK+ theme on Adwaita without having to compile a custom GTK+?
I planned on following https://worldofgnome.org/creating-g... to solve a scrollbar styling issue for myself.
But that guide seems to be horribly outdated as Adwaita seems to be fully compiled in as an engine now - for performance reasons, wich they obviously would never expect to matter to people using custom themes (because else they would have optimized the application of all themes in general instead)...2 -

I spent about an hour today working on getting an arduino board working before discovering that my IDE wasn't the latest version. In fact, it was outdated by several years.
Why are the apt caches so old? I keep my machine updated constantly but what's the point if it's locked at an old package forcing me to circumvent apt in the first place?1 -
Java server faces (primefaces) needs you to define shit like "DATETIMECONVERTER_DEFAULT_TIMEZONE_IS_SYSTEM_TIMEZONE" or that stupid piece just assumes that every date time should be loaded as UTC timezone.
Production standard my ass nobody wants to use such verbose, outdated and logically incomprehensible piece of shit, not even at gunpoint -
i really dislike inheriting depricated projects😓.
really wanted to use angular 2 for current project but our hosting server is outdated and nodejs wont run on it.
realy wish we could update the server, but doing this would break 10 older sites we are being paid to host .
any ideas?15 -
In my native language the word Java means Week, so a couple of years ago when the second year of uni started there was an introduction to the distributed programming class and the professor had made some slides to present the syllabus. It went
Java 1 ...
Java 2 ...
Java 3 ...
.
.
.
Java 7 ...
Java 8 ...
Until here it was all good, then came this
Java 9 ...
Java 10 ...
Java 11 ...
Java 12 ...
Java 13 ...
Java 14 ...
I was like .... oh shit, I'm way outdated.6 -
You know it will be a fucking glorious day when you open up that legacy project from 3 years ago.
Calling those NPM package dependencies "outdated" is an understatement...
3 years equals to roughly 1 million new JS hipster frameworks.1 -
Installing a TP-Link wifi adapter driver on Linux is messed up. First we have to compile the files ourselves, then the outdated documentation points to a stale github repo with minimal instructions and bugs in it. Cant believe that i spent 3 hrs trying to install a stupid wifi adapter driver.
TRYING, yes, TRYING.
Btw I'm referring to the archer TP-link T2U v11 -
For the first time in over 5 years. I have updated my linkedin account. It was a soul-effacing task that drained most of my energy.
I even did some aptitude tests for the heck of it and somehow managed to get a badge for every one of them, despite how backwards, outdated and irrelevant some of the questions are.1 -
Apprenticeship instead of higher education might be a better mode of 1) learning practical skills rather than academic theory, 2) keeping those learned skills modern rather than stale and outdated, 3) skipping all the hippy-dippy college requirements that don’t actually add value to your career.4

For the first time I work for an old and absolutely massive company. I have never seen systems so byzantine and so outdated ever before. With how the project management on top of it all has been going so far I'm really impressed that anything gets done at all.2

Why must all the information about API authentication with Angular must be either outdated or shitty explained?
If anybody have some good, working angular+express server code, please share that to me... -
UI control packs. They look amazing in the demos, and are so easy to add...
And then they start breaking for no reason. Documentation is outdated. Examples never cover real world uses. There are a million versions, and the one you use is suddenly no longer available for download.
In the end you realize you could either have lived without that one feature you wanted it for, or rolled your own with much less work. -
I've just finshed a cours about service-oriented architecture in my uni and a lot of people are "complaining" about SOA becasue it's not used so much these days and it's a waste of time to learn it. What's your take on this? Do you use or have SOA in your company or use it in some way? Any rants about stuff you learned in school that were completely outdated? A friends friend finished uni about two years ago and they had a big course in Flash...2

Me at 3 front-end tech screenings of candidates with +3y of exp last year: "can you name a few npm commands you have used?"
Candidate:
- "Ehh.. npm start?" (npm start is a shortcut to a user-defined run-script)
- "npm version, it publishes the package" (wrong)
- "not going to pretend I know and sound stupid"
Mind you these candidates were not necessarily bad, but come on? You never used npm info, outdated, audit, install, remove, update, why, link, init?10 -
When you are stuck in a job you don't particularly enjoy due to outdated technologies and among other reasons but still need to get the work done, how do you come home and do more coding? I am personally so drained that I cannot even look at a computer anymore, maybe someone can chime in and give me advice as to how to break out and not be stuck in the same place for the next 10 years?3

More system administration than dev proper, but does anyone have any advice on how to set up an OpenLDAP server for an LTSP fat client setup? In kinda having enough of the contradictory, incomprehensible, and outdated documentation I've been finding so far... 😅40

Can you imagine npm would manage autonomous robots?
and also some horrible mistake would need fix, otherwise somebody would be harmed.
for that you push the update, you did npm outdated 3 days ago, everything looked fine.
Npm outdated today would want you to update by 10 versions. I don't know if I'm alone, but seems weird to me that 10 versions jump has happened ... :D we know npm..
and even weirder is the output of npm outdated compared to what package.json diff: express-status-monitor current version1.1.0 latest 1.1.2 -

What should I use to build cross-platform desktop programs?
I'm thinking of learning Java and using JavaFX. I'm staying away from swing since it's a bit old and I've seen people say it's outdated for today's standards.
Flutter desktop would be cool but there's nothing stable for that stuff yet. I've also looked a bit into Haxe but I'm not sure if it's any good.
What's your opinion?22 -
I finally almost have enough money to buy myself a MacBook (to get into iOS development) but now I know if I buy one it will be outdated as soon as the ARM processors come out...
So I guess I'll have my trusty Ubuntu laptop for the next year or two2 -
Spent like 2 days trying to fix a problem that caused failing tests and outdated test lib...
But just realized I could just fix it with a simple hack... basically a test mode flag2 -
Doing maintenance can really be hard work 😓... especially when nothing was investigated into maintenance for over 5 years...
And frameworks and runtime environment is outdated...
do you know that problem?? -
What type of technology is used nowadays in IT companies when it comes to storing, changing, deleting and reading data?
Is SQL still a thing or is it outdated?15 -
Creating a ticket plus confluence page for every open source library I want to use to get approval to use it. Of course only to allow usage of the minor version, so in js Land the request is outdated after 2 days, before someone had to chance to approve it.1

Hey guys, what is your least favorite flavor of Linux for desktop use?
For me it's Debian because everything is so outdated but that's my choice for server use.9 -
Did they fire Jony Ive and we all missed it?
Seriously, I'll have to stick to my iPhone 6 one more year, with every single android fanboy making my life miserable for having an outdated phone!
And those stupid airpods...
What the hell, cutting off the bloody wires doesn't make them exactly the next big thing, more like the dumbest!7 -

I sometimes thank the education system for teaching me really outdated stuff. Here's why...
With new programing languages with all the jazz and cool tricks, it's not impossible to develop concepts and get in the flow of visualizing problem solution. Like for eg, plython3 had inbuilt method to swap variables but I know how to swap variables without a third variable because I had to do it without python. Now that I have the ability to build algorithms, I can leverage functionalities provided by languages in better way.4 -
Enterprise software vendor with scarce, outdated and useless documentation. Claimed 'we are working on it' - they weren't. I had to write 75 page admin and user guides.

The project structure is simple. To work with it you need to first build this undocumented ruby-based, severely outdated backed that requires an env file that nobody really knows where it is. Don't worry, setting it up should take no more than half a day. Then just run `docker-compose up`, after that `rails s`. Now in another repo you need to run a python server and a node sass. You need to figure out the name of the compiled file though. Perfect structure!2

Legacy code: the digital equivalent of a haunted house. Each line of code holds the ghostly whispers of past developers, and every bug fix feels like exorcising demons. Welcome to the developer's graveyard, where the skeletons of outdated tech lurk in every commit. 💀👻

Does anyone know where I can find a nice tutorial on how to expose a c++ class to the V8 engine? I want to be able to call create objects, call their methods and modify their variables from a js script.
Most results on google are very outdated (5-6 years old) and I want to use a relatively new version of V8.
Also tried v8pp with V8 6.9, but many things don't work as they're shown on the github page.3 -
I am new to redis and confused how this works
To keep it simple lets say i have a CRUD service for user
- POST user, just creates user
- GET user by id, fetches user but using annotation @CacheEvict(). This method has a Thread.sleep(3000) before fetching user
- GET all users, fetches all users but using annotation @Cacheable()
- PUT user by id, updates a single with annotation @CacheEvict(). This method has a Thread.sleep(3000) before fetching user
- DELETE user by id, deletes a single user with annotation @CacheEvict()
---
GOOD:
When i GET user by id, i wait 3 seconds and then get the fetched user
When i GET user by id again, i get the fetched user instantly in 5 ms. This means it has pulled the user from REDIS cache instead of postgres
---
PROBLEM:
If i PUT user by id, update some data, and then if i GET user by id, it will return the user in 5 ms BUT the outdated user! Not the newly updated one. Because the Redis cache configuration has not expired yet. So there are now data inconsistencies
---
QUESTION:
How can i know When was something updated, deleted or whatever, so that i can fetch data from postgres (latest data) instead of Redis cache (outdated data)?10 -
What is software development like where you live? Would you say it's good/modern or bad/outdated?
For example, in Peru (this has a degree of truth of up to 95%):
- React isn't even a thing (nevermind RN)
- Everything uses Angular
- No Django, no Rails, no Express. Everything Laravel, CodeIgniter and .NET
- No NoSQL
- Objective-C >> Swift
- AWS? cPanel!
- No testing
Of course I focused on the "bad" part, but maybe this is what rants are for :) And I haven't said anything about salaries 😪
What about you? And please don't forget to mention your country.2 -
About to take a call for a senior position. Looking over the job requirements, they use a framework that hasn't seen an update since December 2017. Might make some suggestions for newer frameworks.2

Anyone got an opinion on the O'Reilly programming books bundle on Humble Bundle?
It's really cheap, I found one of the books on Amazon for 40€ and the whole bundle costs 14€. But are the books generally good. Or are most of them already outdated?3 -
Partially-inherited a WordPress website today that 1) has a ton of outdated plugins (therefore causing Visual Composer to complain), 2 was upgraded to WordPress 5 without keeping the old TinyMCE editor around, and 3) uses a page builder that's built into the "page options" portion of the Edit view.
We also have to add a couple of pages with the project in this state.
(For those not familiar with WordPress, "Page Options" can't be previewed before the page is published/updated, even though anything inside of the actual content area can.)
We got some work to do. 😐4 -
-assigning me a new API integration
-It should be fairly easy. Possibly in a click of a button.
-3 weeks later... End up with outdated documentation and a call with an Indian accent guy (no offence it just end up that way)
Please chose very carefully what to use and research it very well! Trust nobody but yourself! -
"Google chrome is outdated because it hasn't been restarted for a while. An update will be applied if you restart Google chrome."

Frustation at its peak ..as i have been trying to figure out how to make a build system work..Now gitlab just made me open my head out of frustation . Gitlab sends me an outdated version of my repo ..again and again ..and i thought it was the effect of some bad code of mine..2

Where do i learn https://rexify.org/ caveman technology?
No i will not learn it from that outdated piece of shit documentation
Why are there 0 videos on youtube explaining it?

Not to mention its written in Perl so now i gotta learn Perl first???
How tf do I learn this bullshit bruh?10 -
Why do certain software systems fail on a specific day (Friday/Sunday)? For example, getting error 500 "registration module issues :(" on their part.
Do they have some kind of deployment day then? Even so, this isn't acceptable for today's standards.
Oh, let's cut off our customers from purchasing something on those days. What?
Something leads me to think they're not hosted in the cloud then. Outdated architecture..3 -
Please recommend me some good tutorials/articles/series to learn the latest Spring Framework. Anything at all. Most of the tutorials I found we outdated. And no, the docs were not helpful. Sorry for asking it here but help a brother out.2

I would like to build a little 3D strategy game (like settler 3) for iOS and iPadOS, unfortunately I can’t find any useful information with google, do i use Metal or SpriteKit, is there any Book I can read to get into that topic? Or is there any YouTuber who creat videos about that topic?

When you just want to do a simple "brew install apache-flink" and you come to find out the sad realization that your Xcode is outdated and it's either going to be 100 years to update it or delete the godforsaken app altogether (only takes about 50 years)

When your quite amazed about your system looking messed up on clients PC. And found out that her Display drivers were outdated. Its like opening it on IE browser. hehe. When I updated the drivers and then it looks good again . Horay. :)3

Welp, since I wasn't able to compile Vpython on Arch due to the broken API, I will try to do it in a VM running Ubuntu since they have a dedicate package for them.
It's also a good opportunity to try Budgie DE.
I really hate using outdated programs :( -
I just spent 6 hours trying to get JupyterHub working with Real-time collaboration.
Time. Fucking. Wasted.
Outdated or non-existent documentation. Weird conventions. Everything is just annoying.
Is it really just hard to push a complete product to production instead of an half-ass untested mess?1 -
Anybody read the Game Programming Gems series? Are they any good? Are there better alternatives? I'm thinking of getting one or two but have no idea if they're actually worth it or whether they're outdated or were never very good to begin with.8

@dfox The feed button on web frontpage is sort of invisible up in the corner. Expected place for "read without the app" is below the app symbols (in my mind). Also "Get the app to +1, post and comment" seems like an outdated remark(?)
Is there a better place for suggestions and general nitpicking btw? :) -
Comment 👇 #pythonprogramming vs #cprogramminglanguage
Python is fresh and demanded technology in the market but C is great for building a strong foundation. The essence of programming comes from thinking 🤔 and languages are just a medium.
If #python is a big giant means not C is outdated.10 -
I want to ask wordpress blog related question . 3 to 4 days ago I deleted my wordpress blog and removed my deleted wordpress blog's 5 pages with the help of Google's remove outdated content .
I want to ask In how many days google will delete those removed pages permanently?7 -
In what case should i use graphQL? I assume in a search bar?
Should i even use graphQL or is that an outdated technology?
If not supposed to use it what is the efficient way to use the search bar on frontend to search through specific backend routes in the api?17 -
Minecraft modding, in general, is badly documented. The documentation for the major modding APIs, for instance, is probably SOMEWHERE, but it's hard to find and often outdated. I only found one decent-looking updated tutorial, and that didn't contain most of the information I wanted. I really don't understand how the major mod makers actually manage it.5

Why does Microsoft Open R Client use an outdated version of R?
Why is their updated Open R 4.0.2 not compatible with their own olapR package? Are they just kidding me???1 -
Question:
We're building a web app for a customer, he wants us to build it in Oracle Apex. I've had some experience in Apex, and I found it to be terrible.
Searching online I've either found very outdated or biased reports about using it in a business context.
Do you have experience with it, or know why we shouldn't use it? -
I'm so fucking sick of auto pay bull shit. Auto renews, auto debit for bills... Fuck off folks. AWS just charged me 150 bucks and now it will cause my rent to be returned nsf because their shit only has ACH.

Okay so I’ve decided to learn React with TypeScript. I’m a backend dev and doing .net core. I know with React people use JSX. But it looks like typescript is becoming the norm. Also hear redux is outdated and the hot new thing is hooks. Lol. Don’t know man. Is this a good place to start? I’m gonna learn a little but of typescript, the. Jump to React. Not gonna do JSX.1

I had some fun times in college.
Me: This book is too outdated, we need updated information for the video capture card presentation. I'd do it but this time I'm busy.
Teammate: I'll do it.
Me: oh wow really? Thanks!
Next week...
Teammate: here, take a look. I updated the information
Me: Yeah, I can see that all of those 10+ year old models have some fresh google search information in them. Thanks. -
fuck you onelogin, saml and corporate login for being difficult to setup and understand (still haven't achieved either)
also fuck you outdated documentation
when you drag in a senior to help you and they think you're a retard (true), "just read the docs" (attempted), you have them try to babysit you through the setup and they realize the docs are not up to date/retard proof enough to get a proper setup on your end1 -
1. Enter repository of proprietary Node package that you maintain
2. Run `npm outdated | tail -n +2 | awk '{ print "npm i " $1 "@latest" }' | bash`
3. push to master3 -
Which method do you prefer: installing softwares via apt-get install or .deb packages?
My colleague disagreed with me when I choose apt-get install over downloading the .deb package. Later on it turned out the package on the ppa was outdated and didn't include systemd init scripts. I purged the package and installed the .deb provided in its website.
Worked like charm.
He had a good laugh.2 -
