I fucking hate Apple products now.
iPhone 5s time was Apple's prime.
Now it's just a company living off the momentum of its old products.
iPhone X.. really ? the notch ?7 -
Demoing a new feature in the Dev environment.
Me: The images are just placeholders. The communications team are still coming up with appropriate images.
Management: Can we change that image? It doesn't really fit the theme of what we are trying to achieve.
Me: As mentioned earlier, all images are just placeholders. Continues demo.
Management: That image also doesn't really fit with the theme. Can we change that one too?
Me: 🙄6 -
Manager: We really need to save money with this project, so nobody call tech support for anything.
Me: There's this open-source solution that would work great.
Manager: Bad idea! There's no tech support number to call.
Me: ...4 -
To IT: I can no longer clone GitHub repos from the command line.
From IT… Hello DevOps engineer…. You’re no longer allowed to use port 22. It’s not safe. All traffic must be port 443.
Really!?8 -
Fuck corporate bullshit. I do the job, you pay me, the rest is pointless crap.
You are not my family, I don’t base my whole self worth on working for you and mostly I really don’t care.
I’m really not cut out for this shit.9 -
Assembly...
Do I really need to say more? Okay, it's low level so there is no abstraction. All you deal with is cold naked mathematical truth and physical limitations.
It's still ❤️9 -
TROPHY WIFE!!!
Say all you want, the job requires tolerance and ability to stroke some ego. Really demanding hours and maintenance too. I just didn't fit the bill.23 -
I'm really excited to meet our intern, she's coming next week 😊😊
I feel like I'm getting a little sister24 -
I did just quit my job.
It was my first job ever.
The only job I've ever had.
But I kinda couldn't take it anymore, the pay was a bit too low and the projects were really demanding.
On Monday, I'll sign my new contract in another company, I'm REALLY looking forward to it and barely can wait!
I'll be working with just one tech-stack which is awesome compared to now where I have to work on like 5 different stacks, sometimes in a single day.
I can't wait for the new job to kick in.11 -
My third paper got accepted, doing localization with this cute baby in the picture. Had a lot of fun collaborating with a good friend of mine from ETH.
My advisor declines every request I have, and then ignores me most of the time. No wonder the motivation in the lab is lower than the Dead Sea.
I have no words to describe how much I hate every second of my existence, but simultaneously I refuse to change my toxic circumstances so I have only myself to blame. Cheers.17 -
Software is such an awe inspiring concept if you really think about it. We literally create our own reality from scratch. Binary for the wrong architecture? Don't worry we can emulate it. Network? Fully software defined. Heck, the servers don't even know if it's real or all in software. You know what? Fuck it! The machine isn't real either! All virtualized or software emulated
I'm really bad at putting things into words but the idea of software truly amazes me6 -
PM was on vacation the whole sprint.
this sprint was so much more... convenient. i really liked what i was working on.
Also, team lost some of its bureaucratic discipline along the way.
colleague replacing him, in today's daily: since the sprint is basically almost over, i can really recommend to the whole team to wrap up your work of this sprint, so you have something *done* that you can deliver or show in next week's sprint review.
team: ...
oooohhh boy, let me get a shitload of popcorn for the sprint review when PM is back 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿2 -
Not really a dev habit, but a habit many devs have.
My beyond fucked up sleep schedule.
SLEEP CAN
SUCK
MY
ASS
I've woken up at 8 and went to sleep at 12 for two days, and I'm beyond happy with the purely accidental progress I've made, really hope to not fuck it up this time like always.2 -
Getting zero encouragement or positive feedback from my boss is really killing me from the inside. There isn't even a negative feedback. There's absolutely nothing.
PhD is such a lonely path as it is, and being ignored by your advisor is just...soul-crushing.
I did a collaboration with my friend from another lab, and even though her lab is bigger and crazier than ours, her professor found the time to compliment our work and even told us he will present it in a presentation he gives in Meta. Really, it's not that hard to say a kind word here and there.4 -
I keep a bag of cookies at my desk that contain rum. I only eat one whenever i get asked a really dumb question. (See my last rant)
On my way to become permanently drunk at work!7 -
I really like the new Microsoft's WinUI website.
You have an instant insight of the quality of their UI.7 -
The key to survive your job, is to not really care.
But I am that kind of person who takes my job personally, and it becomes a part of my identify, and companies exploit it.6 -
Hey. I have some steam keys I don't want, and I don't really have any friends to give them away to, so. Here you go!
I'll post them in the comments below.
Only redeem them if you actually want the game, and if you've used one please comment or upvote to let others know! Be kind, don't be greedy, honor system, etc. etc.27 -
The WP Gutenberg editor is really amazing. Clients can now fuck up their websites with much less effort. So yeah, IT IS FASTER.8
-
that really killed me today when i sat in the office
how good can you rant with your colleagues? i don't think i would survive long without this kind of therapy xD2 -
Fucking Windows, could you please stop "updating" my fucking GPU drivers to an older version after I just updated them myself to the newest version.
You little dipshit, is a version check really that fucking hard for you?11 -
My wife is really mad at the fact that I have no sense of direction.
So I packed up my stuff and right.2 -
The 8 year old is learning Python, and after a dealing with a syntax bug she asks: "If the computer knows I'm missing a semicolon here, why won't it add it itself?"
I don't know. I really don't know.31 -
Shit went very well - I am really happy for my future
Hopefully, the bureaucracy will be faster for me :P
Details? Not yet5 -
Fucking kill me. Is this really all we do with our lives?
1,715 JIRA-related emails. ALMOST TWO THOUSAND EMAILS. I mean seriously, that's BY FAR the largest email filter I've got. I mean I had them muted of course, but when you really think about the whole thing... are we just wasting our lives chasing some garbage that doesn't really matter? ugh.
Death approaches...9 -
That log4j RCE is some fucking nasty business!!! Its exploits have already been observed multiple times in our company scope.
Time for some unplanned Saturday evening hot-patches :/
P.S. Why the fuck leave such a feature enabled as default??? I mean really, whose brilliant idea was "let's leave the message parser enabled as well as the LDAP query hooks... BY FUCKING DEFAULT!!!"
I mean really, is anyone using that? ANYONE?
And then they laugh at me when I say "stay away from frameworks", "use as little libraries as possible", "avoid foreign code in your codebase",...
you know what.... JOKE'S ON YOU!10 -
I really think we should have a "misleading or false" reason for --, or some other way to deal with fake news that generally plague internet forums.24
-
I just wrote 80+ lines of tests for a 30 line module and I was really mad at myself for wasting my time like that, until I remembered that while writing those tests I did actually catch several really tricky bugs and it didn't even take that long.5
-
I found this old printout of my username and password for my school account from ca 2008. I really like how the password are the same as the username except for some capitalization 😂😅
“sECurItY”10 -
I really despise the non-tech sluts who think their only job is to hold meetings and "talk". "Do you wannaa taalk about iiit?" Fuck you bitch you're not my therapist.2

Rule number 1 in performances debug :
It's always I/O.
If it's not IO, then the code should be REALLY bad.12 -

can't wait to be absolutely fuck you rich while the clowns continue to fumble around in the sandbox for the next 5 years 🪣⛏️😂😂😂
all those years, crouched over a laptop, learning React, then TypeScript, then PostgreSQL, then .NET, then React Hooks, then Redux Toolkit, then Golang, then GraphQL, and even RabbitMQ and gRPC mixed in... more and more and more............ IT'S TIME TO SPREAD MY WINGS AND FUCKING FLY BABY!!!!!
why work for clueless clowns when your own technical know-how is literally 1000x (or perhaps infinitely) theirs? Was I an idiot? Yes, I was! Way too nice and I bought into the hype fake idiot brain culture, but now I've finally woken up. Time to ascend to the stars by myself.
Cheers devRant, this 🤡 is finally going to transform into a 👨🚀🚀

I don't really "keep" myself motivated. I wake up with certain amount of motivation every day and then I slowly die inside through out the day, every day.2

My Daily WFH Routine :
Pretend that you are struggling really hard to solve some issues and it would be done by EOD.
Complete the task before lunch and the rest of the day is all mine :)4 -
I'm starting my new job in 10 days, but I don't have the proper internet access to feel really confident about it. My parents want me to move out of the house so they don't have to accommodate for my new job. I'm getting chemo in a few weeks. I'm really sick of fighting shit. Trusting in the plan though.4
-
it wasn't really useless but i spent months of my internship making a software that was shelved because "it was taking too long to be made". half of my year in the trash4

This is a Revolution !!!
Like really, this toaster is named "Revolution"

If a tree falls over in the woods..
And important dev work gets done and shipped,
And it's not in JIRA.. did it even really happen..5 -
Ex-employer contacting me after 6 months asking for 2FA codes into their system which I handed over a week before leaving... Sorry guys (not really!)1
-
DNS is everywhere.
I hate DNS.
I hate DNS migrations.
I hate having a hundred plus DNS names inside my brain.
I hate resolving issues.
I hate DNSSEC.
I hate CNAMES.
I hate services which cannot be persuaded to stop trying AAAA resolves first.
I hate the fucking stupid braindead idea to use TXT as a configuration store inside DNS... And thus the necessity to blow up DNS query size aka EDNS.
I really really really really really want to burn this whole mfucking shit down...7 -
@dfox can y’all add a beard/mustache combo to the avatar in which mustache hasn’t connected to the beard yet.
Some of us have really shitty genes XD2 -

I am beyond burnt out. I still need to finish some stuff over the freaking holidays. Sucks to be me, literally, figuratively, and really.
*Sobs in TTS robotic voice*10 -
I really like Docker. I think that’s the best thing that happened in the dev field for years. Easy shipping and installation of software without messing up dependencies to other software.15

Holy Fuck Shit!!!!!!
Being a developer
Being a technical assistant
Soon to be a father;
Shit
Not really prepared for this5 -
I'm really enjoying rust now. It was worth the struggles.
I was really surprised to see, a NodeJS server takes around 40-60MB of memory whereas Rust (Actix web) server takes around 500KB-2MB :O whoa! Awesome!3 -
What does PFA MOM stand for?
We're an international company, we all use English while working. That's all fine and good.
But there's one project manager that throws in really obscure acronyms that even I, a native English speaker, struggle with.
It's "please find attached minutes of meeting". Is it really that hard to type?16 -
Music. Music teaches you numbers, creativity, patterns, structure, and basically primes your brain for math and creativity in that space. In addition, it teaches you how to think both within a structure and outside the box, as well as the importance of repetition, memorization, and learning a new language.
Music really was my second language, and the ability to read/write it fluently is a skill that takes a long time to master. I really believe that it increases your brain plasticity so much.4 -
I kinda hate to admit it but they were right. Data structures and algorithms are kinda the shit and you should try to learn and appreciate them. Not just so you’ll use them. But in that learning them helps you become a better problem solver.
There’s a self taught dev that my company works with for really bespoke applications. A senior dev that works with him and helps manage the development process told me that the dev in question doesn’t really know how to implement the finer details. Very telling indeed.3 -
my temper has improved a lot, but around high school i had a really short fuse. we were doing a programming homework and i really blew up with this guy.
the day before the deadline i couldn't finish the work (that i was doing solo), because i had a violin recital. i told the other 3 to finish it, it was very simple stuff. i got at school the next day, they hadn't done what i asked, and this asshat meddled with what i had done, so i had to fix his changes to my code and implement what was left an hour before class. i really gave him a piece of my mind, i was super pissed, and my friends were super awkward because I'm usually a quiet person, and it's scary when i get angry for real.1 -
Everyone in the gaming internet talking about how Microsoft's Activision Blizzard purchase will usher in a new age of improvements have never had to use teams.21

People that say they want things ASAP. But really mean "no rush, whenever you get to it". Can go fuck themselves.3

It really sucks when you join a company, you are really excited and then you see that the management and the work culture in the company sucks and you cant wait to leave...such a waste of time and energy :'(11

Http/2 server push is really cool. Like, really fucking cool. Those researchers at google really got this right. I hate how they handle their users but I have to say they really make good use of the money they get by selling us for kettle.2

computers are really expensive around here, so I've been using the same laptop for 6 years. a couple months ago it perished (rip).
me and my bf got all new parts and made a reasonably priced pc. it's been the first in a really long time that i enjoyed using a computer lol. it's a huge difference in my mindset knowing things won't take 3 min to load and that it won't crash every 2 secs11 -
However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5 -
It is really really really hard to do anything, including development or studying, when you're worrying about losing your teeth.
You can't imagine the anxiety.12 -

Well fuck you Epic Games and Deep Silver!
I was really interested in getting Metro Exodus, but I'm not gonna install that shitty Epic Store!
Fuck off!11 -
A team member called me the worst manager he ever had. I felt really shitty about myself.
Managing people is not easy and it is not for everyone.11 -
A LPT I read on Reddit which I really found effective, sharing with the community here:
Using following naming convention really helps to keep file system sorted
YYYY - MM - DD - Name
Example:
2022-12-31-Christmas trip to Amsterdam
2022-02-28-Honeymoon to Maldives
2021-09-15-Banged Christina
Your folders, will always be sorted in order making it easier for you to locate them.11 -

Working with stuff close to

I'm working with arcane magic..
At least with Linux I can
look at the source ..10 -
Is it just me, or are web chatbots actually really annoying and way too intrusive. It's like "omg look guys we have a ChatBot, we can do really cool technical stuff!" If a ChatBot can't ease my oversized heap of depression, I do not want to talk to it.6
-
In 2020, I was working for a company that started selling at-home covid tests online. Marketing wanted us to add a survey for this product. They said this was required by the government…but we didn’t have to retain any of the answers…🤨.2
-
Of course, the variable for fields should be called "flds", those 2 bytes saved will help us so much! For a small price of this shit being not really readable anymore. Is it "floods"? "fleeds"?6
-
Not really trying to, but probably should try to fix this bad, bad habit…
I keep wanting to fix and improve everything - and I keep taking notes, writing action plans et fucking cetera to the point the amount of work that should be done and I want to do is driving me insane. And they should all get done now!
In short, I should really either learn to focus on just one thing at a time for a meaningful period - or just cease to give a fuck. Either could work.3 -
my current boss i think. he's really good at office politics and he's very willing to help me navigate some tricky social interactions. he's also got very solid feedback1
-
So our junior dev constantly asks really obvious things. But this one question really takes the cake.
So we have a small programm that opens a file browser and puts the selected files path in a line edit text box. So he comes over to me and says its broken because he cant edit the path in the text box. Weird, this shouldnt happen at all. Turns out this more than braindead tortoise thought it was just a regular piece of uneditable text and didnt even try to edit it. Its a FUCKING OBVOIUS EDITABLE TEXTBOX!!!!!
I facepalmed so hard that moment you could hear the slap half a mile away!7 -
!dev
Covid for the 2nd time.
No where near as bad as the first time, just like a really bad cold that’s taking ages to get better.8 -
Would you like to talk about our god and saviour TDD?
P.S. I like test driven development very much. It makes complex stuff really easy.4 -
Now that I'm back in Belgium stupid windows decided to switch to dutch for some unknown reason. I don't speak dutch, you microsoft idiots.
Jesus christ those who use this retarded operating system really like to be patronized huh?5 -
Really want to go back to the office, have coffee breaks with my colleagues, go on lunches and complain about having to come to the office everyday!!!!!!!!!!!1

Not bad vs 2022. Not bad !
I wanted to write that (really, not a joke).
Sometimes, auto complete just works. -
DevRant hiding my old rants really rustles my jimmies.
It took me many years to distill all of this pure, unadulterated rage... why would you conceal such a treasure from me?5 -
contemplating making this really simple regex stop matching dates after year 2999 just cause I think it might be funny and ruin someone's day for a few minutes long after I'm dead.16

No but really, the

As dumb and childish as it is...

two things people think they are good at, but actually have no clue about:
regex and sex

R&D: here's a really convoluted qualitative AND quantitative algorithm we want you to implement
Me: *asks to the meaning of one of the columns in a spreadsheet*
R&D: yeah that's probably wrong. We'll get back to you1 -
As long as there's good documentation, and is relatively speedy, I really don't give a fuck what language/tech I'm using.5

Big Big kudos to all my friends who develop and mantain Safari! :D Your work is surely appreciated. How could i live without that ...pitiful, terrible, broken, Disgraceful, full of incompatibilities, slow, version swarmed piece of utter and definitive Garbage? :D
I really really hope that one day every company on earth will stop supporting or requiring your torture device and we'll have an internet free of your nonsense :D6 -
So at work, there is this class/model thing that's for storing translated strings. It also supports n-level nested macros, cascading lookup (e->d->c->b->a->blank), and I've added transforms too. The code is a bloody mess and very inefficient (legendary dev's code), but it's useful.
You call methods with a symbol representing one of the strings, and it does... whatever you ask, like return text, booleans, expand macros and submacros, pass in data to interpolate, etc.
But I just learned something today.
Its `.html` method... doesn't support html. In fact, calling it strips out all html, takes whatever is left, and attempts to convert that back into html. Because that makes so much sense. So, if you have an html string? Don't call html on it.
Also, macros use the same <angle brackets> as html tags, and macro expansion eats unknown macros, so... you can't mix html and macros, meaning you cannot inject values into your markup. That's a freaking joy to work around. (You end up writing a parser every time.)
So no, if you have an html string, you need to get the raw data out and handle it yourself. Don't reach for that shiny .html method; it'll just ruin your day.
It's the little things that make my day so terribly long.rant it really isn't so bad principle of most surprise poor design but it could be ever so much better8 -
as much as i complain about work, I'm glad i have great colleagues in my team. they're a blast and they make this shitty job worthwhile. I've never been the type to make friends with coworkers, but they're really great people. i guess I'm really lucky3

"Pay more attention to the house"
Oh, really?
I'm working here!
Why every non tech person acts like I'm doing no fucking shit all day?
These types of things makes me want open my own fucking office.5 -
I'd like to ask: What's trending at the moment instead....
Either I'm old and senile and missing something, or there is not really sth new.
Okay, JS might be crapping out new frameworks in their common "Not invented here" diarrhea....
But otherwise? What's really new?
I don't really know. I'm not only thinking about languages and stuff, but even in hardware there ain't really a big thing going on in my opinion.
Hab ich wat verpennt?
(Have I overslept?)
We had an interesting and frightening discussion regarding NGINX, as it is russian software today and that a new trend of a true, actively developed webserver is severely lacking... Apache looks semi dead and most other niche webservers, too.
That's all I've seen as a "trend" discussion in the latest time4 -
I hate, I really really hate other students leaving their homeworks and assignments on the school's computers, they clutter everything and bloat the desktop with garbage, at least have some decency and put it inside a folder!
Today I got welcomed by another of those desktops and I decided to give them some help with their assignments, i.e I changed their python scripts for improvised Ackerman functions.7 -
I just realized that college professors aren't teachers, they just did "really good" in their field of study.
Why does the world allow someone that's not a teacher to teach just because he/she has a PhD.
A person should be taught how to teach before they step in front of that whiteboard and try to convey knowledge.
Edit: (Especially when its math/really technical stuff)6 -
i dont know sql, gotta look shit up and dont much of it really internalized
i may be now being assigned somebody else's task to do some sql shit

//do nothing

https://hotpot.ai/art-maker
playing around with this is so captivating. that it doesn't really work well and you have to "optimize" your input makes it even more interesting. but when you use it too long, it starts messing with your brain and you start questioning your own perception of reality. what are "things" anyway xD
would be nice if dall-e 2 (which seems to actually work really well) was available to the public soon.. also, i want this for 3D structures, animations & games mechanics, imagine the fantastic uncanney valleys that would open up ^^4 -
Gonna give up on Advent of code.
I know I'm not really a programmer and while I had fun solving the challenges so far it feels I fail to translate the idea of solution into working code. i.e. I know how it should be working, but when diving into the code I'm losing focus and getting lost in the functionality.
It was also good reality check of my skill level when a task took me 50 min while TOP100 is below 10. Can't really fit the time it takes me to come up with a solution with other activities I should actually be doing.5 -
Really not in the mood for work.
But since that is not an acceptable reason to ask for a day off, I wonder what excuses I can make to get out of working today... 🤔11 -
Time to say no to artificial intelligence, tried ChatGPT today and it's frightening.
The day when we won't consider nukes as the biggest threat to our civilization is approaching exponentially faster and faster and this is really worrying.21 -
Been trying #rust for 3 weeks now and I really like it. No hopes for a job, but it's nice to have different point of view when coding in Go.3

This last week I have been so excited about Artemis going around the moon. This is the kind of stuff that people need. Stop bickering about bullshit. There is a universe to explore!
I saw parts of the flyby today and it was really really cool. I hope NASA is getting incredible data from this. I cannot wait until we send people there again. Probably better to use robots, but going there in person is cool. -
In reality, I'm really frustrated with my life, sometimes I thought that dying is easier than living 🙂.7

is "drunk coding" really a thing? i can't imagine how.
i prefer working code, so when i'm writing code, i need my brain to be working. the "benefits" of alcohol, like reducing social inhibitions, don't benefit source code.4 -

These complaints range from "fairly minor" (some stuff like function names/args and some syntsx complaints) to "how is this language even used" (segfaults in a scripting language, broken things like "create_function", comparisons and ternanry operator).
Of course, i don't program in PHP so i don't know how bad any of this actually is.
Anyone actually use PHP or did use it previously?20 -
Nearing the end of the year, and all I'm thinking is that I'm just making bad decisions left and right. And these are like long term decisions, that don't show results until much later.
It's making me really depressed and it's not good.
There are a bunch of should haves all littered throughout the past 3 months and it's really fucking with me.2 -
No desire to work hard or learn new coding stuff. This world is so messed up now that I have a difficult time caring about anything anymore. I spend a lot of time browsing for and posting anti-wokeness and pro-libertarian memes and watching the world burn down around me under the illusion that it’s being “saved” and “improved” by monopolistic authoritarian governments and technocracy. All that’s really happening is a handful of really powerful people are pissing on our heads and telling us it’s raining. Invest in umbrella manufacturers.16

About 1 hour and a half

I was reading a few interesting postgreSQL solutions to constrain polymorphic tables (anti-pattern, I know) when something caught my eye.
Some solutions were looked down upon (or looked favorably upon) based on their portability to other rdbms like MySQL.
Is that really so important? I get it, if somehow you decide to change from one to the other for some god-forsaken reason it will make the switch easier. But really, how often will that happen?
I feel there is a tendency to just avoid using SQL beyond the basics.5 -
Dude. Gimp sucks. I've been using it for about 10 years, and I really want it to be something it's just never going to be. It just sucks.6

You know those mice that go "clunk clunk clunk clunk" when you scroll?
Can you really trust someone who makes a decision to use something like that?14 -
Noticed a running process called geoclue. Wanted to kill it but xdg uses it. Went down the rabbit hole, and guess what? Flatpak is the mother of all dinosaurs. Busy enough that I can't care, but like... Really, flatpak? ReAlLy???2

Want to ask on how you guys overcame your burnout from coding, i think its been so long since i really got into coding like i used to before.13

I really like programming but after 5 years I realized it's a very social job. We have to deal with others more than the marketing people or heck even some customer service people.3

Just interviewed with this company that I really love and wants to work in. And I think I did well in the interview. I hope they don’t send me a rejection email like the rest.2 -
To make a semi-meaningful (or really any kind of) contribution to the Linux kernel. Like just to leave something useful behind in general.2

I'm trying to get an internship.
My coding skills are great, but I get really nervous/scared when interviewed. Social skills are trash...8 -
does my co-worker code is actually really necessary, for the sake of arguments lets ignore server performance, and focus on this snippet.

i was trying to explain to someone that we have really specific problems that others don't really understand, which i think is why devrant exists. it was kinda frustrating, cause idk if i explained it very well.
what would you guys say is the worst part of working as a dev that others wouldn't get?11 -
Someone please tell me why I spent all night forking repositories in regards to quantum computing?… wtf am I gonna use simulated tensors for??? Also, what is all that stuff? I’m really just a brilliant fool.😅👁️🗨️🃏🤷🏻♂️44

If you really think about it, our body spends energy to keep us alive, so we can spend even more energy.
Energy dissipates. Thermodynamics works. Your life is a chemical reaction.3 -
Are antiviruses worth it ? My subscription expired a few days ago and they're pestering me to renew it. Will Windows Defender be good enough ? Do I really need an anti-virus ?15

Ok ok.. I used a German keyboard so Y and Z are switched. Ive never seen a picture of Jason Mraz but I really like his music so I wanted to YouTube him.. and my muscle memory did this.2

While the topic is a bit divisive, the statistical technique highlighted in this post is really cool:
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2022/...2 -
Posted in DevOps discussion board (teams channel):
“Program x isn’t behaving the same way that it does on production. Can you please take a look?”
..a little background: we have a deployment scheduled for today and this issue was found during regression testing.
The issue found is that when a file is clicked on it disappears from the screen, and then isn’t opened…
The file is not on prem, and doesn’t get uploaded to a server that our DevOps team owns…
So why on earth would this development team be asking DevOps to look into a bug that is most likely a code related issue? 😆
Is this a common occurrence for anyone else?
A Bug is found, and the first thought is that the code isn’t the issue?11 -
ugh. my isp apparently doesn't allow to change DNS in its routers. what a load of bullshit.
Internet has been really flakey lately because of this11 -
Worst: Not landing a decent job
Best: dev-wise, none really.
It has been a rather shit year, really.14 -

How do you find open source projects you want to contribute to? I'm trying to find projects I'm interested in but don't really know what to do.6

getting a scam message in the work phone saying it's from a rival company is really funny, might be the highlight of my week 😂4

DevRant hiring managers - do projects actually matter? Have you really hired someone because of a cool project?8

Best: Getting really close to my team and having good times with them as well as having a client love their website so much they sent me gifts and a really nice note.
Worst: Rude client who treated me like shit, made my job 103837xs harder and made me want to cry, scream and not want to come in to work ever again.1 -
Writing my first code review. Even though it really is a nice review and I'm happy with the solution code, I still somehow feel like an asshole for each critique I make. Maybe it's unavoidable with code reviews / pull requests?3

What are your thoughts on higher education? Does a having a BS, MS, or PhD really make a difference?15

First annual review went really well, My manager wants to take some of the tedious day to day stuff I really hate doing, off of my tasks (onto the newest person) so that I can focus on the parts of the job I like, figuring out the technical side of the job, and improving legacy code to ACTUALLY work well, and automating the most time consuming parts of the job that really shouldn't be manual in the first place.

Saw a Job ad stating they give a brand new MacBook Air as you get hired (as a FrontEnd developer)
Is this a red flag? BC to me it really looks like a red flag.
Why would I specifically need a Mac? Just to test stuff on shitty Safari? I really hope so and I also really hope that it won't be to start developing iOS apps11 -

While its really hard to get code wrong in Rust, it is also really hard to get code right in Rust. It took me a considerably long time to write a code which returns the first word in the sentence
I felt the borrow checker introduces a steep learning curve into Rust which is otherwise a beautiful language according to me. C++, my current favorite language, also suffers the same problem with respect to certain language features.3 -
JoyRant build 12:

Immutability is nice and all, but there are languages and tasks where it really doesn't work as well as it should.

Seriously, what is up with all these new BLOATED webapps? Almost 250MB eaten up before I write a single note -- really?? Compare that with KeyNote (written in Delphi) loaded with thousands of notes.10

how to deal with toxic coworker? everybody hate him, he hates everybody, but this piece of shit is only backend guy here. and I need to create tasks for him. so cant really ignore.9

Web designers should seriously stop using this ultra-slim Monsterrat font.
If you need a modern/futuristic-looking font for your web site, consider using Futura or Noto Sans / Open Sans, or Proxima Nova. If you really, really want Monsterrat, don't make it so slim that it becomes barely readable for the sake of trying to look wannabe-"modern". You are just humiliating yourself.4 -
1. Open private browsing window
2. Navigate to https://github.com
That's a really well-designed and inspiring product landing page.6 -
Most had no idea what the web really was “under the hood” back then, so it was mostly indifference. But entry level salaries were awesome then, so also happiness and congrats from them for the folks I told how much I was making.

Need some advice. I’m a uni student and I really want to go into machine learning, data science, or computer vision. I have most of the skills and I feel I am fairly competent. However, the only professional experiences I have are web dev based. How can I make myself more appealing for data based roles? I really don’t want to do web dev anymore hahahahah5

I really recommend to follow the online course of Jonas Schmedtmann on Udemy talking about JS from 0 to expert.
Have you ever heard about it?
I just starting the course some week ago, but i fell very involved by him, i think one of the best teacher on the platform,
Anyway I'm really proposed to hear some feedback or another different personal experience3 -
Really really just want to be healthy and comfortable you know
Like in the golden age before my faggot parents generation eradicated everything health depended on6 -
Someone in my mind, I see programmers who use Windows as “unserious” and “don’t really know what they’re doing”. I always catch myself every time because I know that this is entirely false. And smart people actually use the tools they’re most comfortable in to get the job done. At the end of the day, what really matters is how much money you’re making for the capitalists at the top.4

I mean, as I don't have a job in that way yet I can't really say much.
Let's presume I have a job.
"My condolences, may god grant me mercy." -

I have lost track of the whys, but I'm writing something that loads a datastructure not unlike specifications of C types (plus struct single inheritance and generics) from any DLL-s tossed in the same folder, then organizes them into a pretty database. Now I just gotta keep gradually broadening the scope until I get to the feature set of the modern C# type system.rant what is this not gonna halt another project at least i can show off my mathz i could've went with lua i really should stop writing in the tag row why

I really don't like our morning daily standups. They're kind of annoying, feels like kindergarten and I sometimes have to repeat myself because someone's too slow at taking notes from our talking.
Wondering if asynchronous standups would work better.7 -
Because of a previous post today I looked up the cost for these bootcamps. Is really someone out there paying 15.000$ for something you could learn for free ? Why do people do this ?2

I just saw an ad for a "firefly" drone controlled with hand gestures and it looks really cool. I saw a video here about someone working on gesture controlled drones under an animal codename. Which one of you was it?5

Today, I started a new project with Rails. I used always an own auth implementation, now I thought I'll give devise a try. Hell... the documentation is bad, really really bad. I really don't know why people are using this and don't write this by themselves. Anyway, I kicked devise and write it again by myself.8

Not sure how to ask this. I really enjoy Network side of IT. Maybe even throw in a little Cyber Security as well. I feel like I'm trying to every too fast. I got no certifications yet. This is stressful 😫1

devRanters!
Do any of you find that you can type the solution faster than GitHub Copilot recommends?
That's how you know you're senior 😏
Also, on a serious note, does it only support JavaScript / TypeScript? Didn't really take time to investigate.
I thought there was also a feature you could tell it what to code and it would try to write a solution. Haven't really seen how to do that yet.7 -
This guy has been a “php programmer” for 3 years now and yet he doesn’t know where to find Apache logs, is it weird that I am finding this really strange?11

I don’t really know how people make technology decisions… there are just so many factors to consider. And there’s some sort of drawbacks to every approach.4

Freelancers, what's it like?
Would you recommend it?
What stacks are must have?
What's maintenance like?
What's dealing with hosting like?
Is it mostly webdev? Is there any market for anything else really?
I'm thinking about going that direction. I've been burned by one company too many. I don't know how I can trust a company again. I also that if I have to really manually earn every last cent, might be the best way to make myself care about my work
I'm thinking about it8 -
I need a place where i can put fck in some moments. I dont really want to scream it out. What do you guys do in these situations?7

I'm the only one?4 -
What are your use cases for noSql dbs? I haven't really found a reason beyond stuff like chat messages or logs, but even those tend to work perfectly fine with SQL.
I imagine they're pretty good for prototyping, but haven't really tried them out for that yet. Perhaps for cases where you're handling billions of records?9 -
I've searched for this a few times now but can't really find a good solution for my "problem".
I want to update multiple Debian servers / machines at ones or from one machine.
Puppet doesn't seem to support newer versions of Debian and I don't really want to force the updates via cron.
Are there any other ways to do it?1 -
Is Fastify really better than other libraries like express as it claims?
It claims that it's way faster than express

How is your experience with upgrading from Debian 8 to Debian 9? Want to update my homeserver but I really don't want to screw it up. Especially with the switch from MySQL to MariaDB2

Still wondering why Microsoft at some point removed this really cute UX to set the position of the form on your CRT monitor instead of writing the values manually. 😢1

No it’s ok you can power trip on me that’s fine, it’s just now your delivery is going to be months late. So who’s fault is it really?
Fuck you - fight me bitch. -
Our lead frontend dev insists on using <select> as a dropdown for a language switcher in the navbar of a website and then make the page redirect to the localized url using the onChange event with JS.
Am I wrong thinking that's just really, really dumb, or am I just dumb?3 -
I really liked the idea with the new Firefox page, but the execution made me angry so I fixed it
- Removed the paddings and margins that took up space from information and actions
- Removed the four sentences that contained the same explanatory text I already understood in the initial popup
- Removed the fucking sidebar ad for Colorways
- I really like the Firefox logo so it can stay
Here's my userchrome repo if you want it, I reserve the right to discard the project and stop updating the repo at any point. It's best used as inspiration:

I really want to switch my career from being a Full-Stack python/javascript developer to be a Data Engineer.
I've already worked with relational and non-relational databases, troubleshooted a couple of Airflow DAGs, deployed production-ready python code but now I feel kinda lost, every course I start on the Data engineering topic feels really useless since I feel like I've already worked with that technology/library, but I'm still afraid of start taking interviews.
Any good book/course or resource that I should look in?
BTW first rant in a couple of years, this brings me memories1 -
Got a full stack job in a really large org. They write shit code and refuse to comment on code saying the code should explain itself.
And I’m like yeah but if you’re writing spaghetti code at least fucking comment why.
The new job’s pay is like 2x my old job so it’s really fucking good pay but my brain is melting from frustrations with these devs.4 -
Does anyone have experience with using Kotlin as a front end language? Seems to have excellent JS interop and I really don't want to deal with the garbage fire that is JS or TS 😬5

i think 2022 is gonna be the worst year ever judging by the omnicron and i think there will be more covid varients, and they will be more dangerous. the vaccine could just not work in response to the variant and millions of people could die because of that.
it could be a good year, but i don't really agree with that. and judging by the past two years, it doesn't look so good because of what happened in the last two years.
(blm riots, covid, india running out of oxygen for its hospitals, january sixth, etc)
but maybe, just maybe its good, but i don't really know.3 -

I understand unit testing and its value but I’m really struggling when I have to mock databases or other external resources. It’s normal or others have this annoyance?6

Not really an impressive one, but I think it's blasphemous enough to be mentioned:
Creating an embedded application, it was not supported to print a float using optimized libraries (understandable since they're not really supposed to be used anyways), but I was too lazy to convert clocks to a time unit by hand while running benchmarks. So I just printed the float as two integers, splitting it to one for the whole and one for the thousands. -

I‘m currently working fulltime in IT, i would say as a business analyst/ requirement engineer. I do this job for 2 years now and its no fun for me because its only interfaces we work on.I am also studying software engineering in the evenings.
At the UAS programming is really fun for me and seeing progress instead of only interfaces really makes me happy..but i am scared to not have skills for starting as a developer fulltime and get called dump or something like this. Do you guys have any advice for me? Is it ok to start as a junior directly after UAS? -
Agile can work really well with webapps. But does it work for mobile apps? Each iOS app release can take days if unlucky5

WinUI looks nice and performs really well, I'm not a Windows fan but that's definitely a hidden Microsoft gem. It's a same which Microsoft was really late to the desktop development game and kept providing ugly frameworks until few years ago otherwise we could had a nice ecosystem on desktop apps on Windows as we have on macOS instead of tons of ugly and slow Electron based apps.3

Does anyone here really like typing SQL? I mean just typing queries all day long? Are touch typing and sql related? Next on google: How to build a backend app with only sql?9

Exciting and challenging projects really helps with burnout. I didn't really believe that the solution is to work more it sounds stupid, but it reminded me why I love my craft, it was worth the sleepless nights(wouldn't do it in the long term). I hope you get the opportunity to work on something that you are passionate about and reignite that fire 🙂4
