Hello beautiful. Finally got fiber installed. For my girlfriend and me. Not that we really need it... But you know...
(Wifi reaches up to 170 on 5Ghz)49 -
Me, in the zone, staring at the code. Co-worker enters.
Co: hey, can you...
Me (not really listening): no.
Co: it's just...
Me: no.
Co: later?
Me: no.
Co: but...
Me: no.
Co: (leaving)13 -
Really Quora? You're going to make your site mobile compatible, but you're not going to let me use it. Fuck you.7
-
Downside to being a computing student:
I need my PC to study, but all my distractions are on my PC so it's really hard not to get distracted while studying.6 -
Today my girlfriend and I are celebrating our 2nd anniversary. 🎊🎊🎉🎉
It has been a really amazing journey for both of us. She's not really into coding stuff but tolerates my weirdness anyway. There are disagreements sometimes. But the important thing is to keep yourself open and be patient. She has really helped me to become less of an smartass and be more understanding and patient. I'm really looking forward to all the new adventures we both will have together in the future....
2 down.. a lot more to go 😍😍10 -
Often saying fuck it when I've got a project and I kind of really need to use git but I'm not good with it so I just go back to good old scp again 😅11
-
Boss: Hey squares, I need one of you to select a new volume control, if you spot anything let me know.
Me: Say no more2 -
I really like JS, but sometimes it's just incredibly stupid.
NaN stands for Not-A-Number
typeof NaN
> 'number'
why are you doing this to me8 -
Hey Friends of DevRant , this is not dev related but id like to post a picture of one of my happy places in Sydney where i am from :-) I really hope you all like it!
Milo❤️😄23 -
My desk is as crazy as I me. It's kind of a mess but it means I'm productive. Not pictured is Tux, he's coming in the mail.
....I really like IBM hardware. 🤓10 -
I think I once saw Richard Stallman in a subway in New York, but I'm still not sure if it really was him or just another hobo.
I wanted to go up to him and ask, but was too scared that I might offend him if it _was_ him or get attacked by a hobo if not.4 -
School has default router username and password. And it's not just a shitty tp-link router. It runs linux.
Made a simple reverse shell and I have a fully functional linux computer. Not really a hack, but it's sad.
Soon to get to the school server!3 -
Not really a rant but I'm just happy so I must share it.
Two days ago I uploaded a new project on github and today when I woke up I saw it on github trending! Only the C# section though, but still.
Feels weird as I'm usually not upload anything and the ones I have usually sit around 5-20 stars forever.3 -
@dfox @trogus That was truly wonderful. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and perhaps it's because I'm a part of the community, but that was a really really good show!!
It's not easy to make me laugh in a podcast but I was fucking rolling9 -
Not really a dev habit, but a habit many devs have.
My beyond fucked up sleep schedule.
SLEEP CAN
SUCK
MY
ASS
I've woken up at 8 and went to sleep at 12 for two days, and I'm beyond happy with the purely accidental progress I've made, really hope to not fuck it up this time like always.2 -
Beware of office politics. Take it from me. Beware whom you trust in the workplace. Sometimes you won't detect it and they will prey on your innocence. You thought they're good but really is not. Back stabbers.8
-
I really like the attention to detail Microsoft has put in their websites, they've replicated every aspect of Windows.
Not only the loading animations, the style of the UI, but also the random freezes and crashes.4 -
Mr. Robot is a trip! I've just started watching. I think my most appreciative part is that it's not just about programming side but the characters as well. They are really quite deep, frighteningly deep.8
-
I finally did delete my more than 7 years old fb account!
It was really not easy. But I made it! :)5 -
I had some fun once with "inspect element" while I were at my ex-girlfriends house. She asked me what I was doing and I told her about changing websites locally. I wanted to show her an example and so I went onto her school's website and played around a bit. I than changed the latest "News" post to a post about a food fight event organized by her school. She than took a photo from that post and send it into her schools WhatsApp group. They all went crazy how the school could do something like this and we had a good giggle. After a few minutes she told them that it was a fake and that they should stop believing everything that someone posts on WhatsApp. (Around this time a post was going around that was used to spread Missinformationen about the Berlin police)6

!rant, just wanted to express my excitement to someone
Not sure if this counts but technically I got my first freelance dev job designing an app for a club/small business at school. I have a lot to learn still but I'm really happy about the opportunity3 -
So i finished my first app today and i feel really good, it's not a great app or anything. But i feel good after making something and i am really happy :D5
-
Handing in my resignation letter on April 1st, but then actually leaving.
Not really a prank, that's something I genuinely feel like doing nowadays.2 -
The key to survive your job, is to not really care.
But I am that kind of person who takes my job personally, and it becomes a part of my identify, and companies exploit it.6 -
Black is the new dark.
There. I had to vent that off. It sounds so catchy.
On other news I got my stickers!!! Wohooo!4 -
!rant
Joined a couple hours ago. Really excited to be here, I'm not usually the social type (fb, twitter, etc) but this looks like a place that will be able to understand my frustrations !2 -
Not really a rant. But, since I found devrant I started needing less caffeine to help me get me through the day.2
-
I'm not really keen in relying too much on JavaScript to render a properly functioning web page. HTML and CSS is now than good enough for it nowadays.
But if due to technical limitations, i have to use JavaScript, I make sure to not use jquery.
I don't like jquery.9 -
back to devrant, yay!
closed my account when i entered a really nice company, but after a year it was taken over by another one that was not-so-good at all, started working for another startup and, BOY, i really didn't miss ranting about work, but now i NEED a place to let this all up, little by little, somewhere, before my brain melts
current startup is one of those founded by rich dudes who had an "amazing" idea that, as time passed, turned into a monster that not only eroded the team from inside, but also made us see how spoiled the bosses are11 -
The best way to check if the bar is moving, it to use the magnifier on windows, also, not my computer, but really nostalgic, lol3
-
my boss praised me again, for just routine stuff, doing my job. I'm not even doing it too well. he said "oh but it's not about that, it's just that you're doing it". oh. honey... that's a really sad thing to say 😂3
-
I regret that I didn't start learning to code before I went to university and that I never had Computer Science/Programming classes before in school (which is not really my fault but I always wished for this)7
-
I just automated the tasks I had for next week. What to do, what to do ^^ This is not really a rant but just me boasting. Time for beer.3
-
Sometimes I feel like I'm not really a developer. I don't know how to explain this.
I know some stuff but I feel like I am always behind no matter what...11 -
Boss just gave me a bonus out of the blue for my "continuous show of dedication and engagement". Not sure what I did specifically to deserve it, but pretty happy nonetheless!
Not really a rant, I just wanted to share. Spent the whole day smiling like a retard :)2 -
I really love how beautiful code can be, and the feeling of creating something for others or yourself to enjoy. But I hate being the family's IT guy... I'm a developer not IT support.4
-
It hurts man, it fucking hurts
I feel like I'm a ghost, like im not there. I don't really exist
I try to be better, actually doing something, anything. I really do. But nothing changes. So many times have I decided to finally make the change. This time I'm really gonna make it out of here. Yet I'm still here. Not one thing has changed. I'm still a shell of a person
It really fucking hurts
I just want to exist17 -
Ok so maybe not a full rant but it really pisses me off that the version number for Visual Studio 2015 is 14.03
-
"Congratulations on winning our hackathon! We're not going to implement your feature in favor of one that was already on our roadmap, but we really like your idea."3
-
I just realized I haven't been using MacOS on my iMac for more than 4 months
I guess I won't buy new Apple stuff in the future😅
Awesome machine but I just like Windows more9 -
Not really rubber, but he's my duck.
He's literally one year younger than me so it makes it quite special.
I really like him 😄6 -
I starting to think, that I may actually be addicted to learning 😅 sound completely stupid, but I'm kinda stressed lately, so I wanted to take a day off, and not do anything.
But my mind kept being like "how does this work, how does that work, how do they fit together". I've never really tried before, to not research something, when I wanted to know how it worked, but Damn it's actually been hard not to...7 -
Honestly these icons are really nice and are a good medium between clean and defined. I think Material failed as a whole to accomplish the paper look but this is very well done and has subtle but not 2008-era giga-drop-shadow depth. Well done, weather app.1
-
It's not really a rant but has anyone tried yoga? I absolutely love it after being stuck at my desk for hours and hours. Highly recommend giving it go! 😊6
-
Damn, AWS really need to hire some decent UX people. Not sure what's with this latest change, but it feels like a massive step backwards.10
-
Believe it or not, none of these mices are working. This is my traveling setup, this laptop used to be a gaming computer, but now it's just really tired (but it still can run servers so it's k)7

!rant
So family doesn't really know coding. Just me and my little sister. But then my dad suddenly made jokes with loops and stuff. I have no idea where he learned it. They're not actually accurate but I really love it when he does that.2 -
have you ever felt having bad code ocd that you feel like you really need to clean this old project that you got assigned to fix, but cleaning the whole project up would take too much time and it is just not worth it . But you feel like you really need to do it...3
-
Just got stood down today.
The company I'm assigned to at the moment gave my employer a days notice that they are halting the project.
Time to hit the vodka.3 -
So I was out for Halloween last night, and there was a chick with a plain white Tee that said:
"Error 404: Costume not found."
Really wanted to talk to her about responses but I got the impression she didn't really know what 404 was, just that it was a meme7 -
Building an amazingly complex system from scratch in Rust means 2 things to me...
1. Really cool tech with great syntax to learn
2. My value as a developer will be going up a lot. In terms of the salary expectations
I really love when I get to learn a new technology, not for a project or course, but to build really cool real-world applications.
That’s what drives me!5 -
not really a rant;
But I am a real fan of sci-fi stuff, and yesterday I tried star citizen for the first time (been backer since 2012).
I have not slept yet9 -
Manager redesigned large parts of a website template that I have been working on.
now, this did not bother me one bit but I am pretty sure it has to do with the delivery of the message. She was so happy about the redesign and it really did look better. I could not find it in me heart to not comply and just be happy. Plus she always lets me come in super late :V and she really is pretty and very nice to us.
oh well.2 -
When you're really fuckin proud of that extremely clean, elegant, efficient 30 lines of code. It might not be important, but holy shit it's pretty!!3
-
Not really a rant, but:
Me, programming in unity using C#: well if I add that library, My life will get a little bit easier, but the final APK will be 2MB heavier because of it.
WebDev who never used compiled programming languages: can't you just minify it?
Me:7 -
Can any dev's recommend a good windows emulation program that supports x64 applications?
Really want to be able to run Gamemaker studio 2 on Linux but would rather not install a fully fledged VM.
I'm willing to work with a VM but just rather not have a 12GB installation for a 256MB program...39 -
Not really a rant, more a proud of myself moment but the custom IVR software I built is now getting 20k calls a day and hasn't broken........
........yet4 -
To be fair, it's not really unprofessional. But two weeks ago we recorded a theme song for our company in an empty office room. Though I shouldn't complain, I love doing those kinda things :)1
-
Got internship opportunity. It's just an internship, but still it feels exciting and surreal for me. It feels weird because there is not really anything exciting about salary.
I guess it's the "my first job opportunity" butterfly.2 -
Not really the start of a new job, but at a job interview I tried to pour myself some water and literally flooded the whole table :D
They invited me back for an internship actually, but I chose another company.1 -
Just leaving this ugly piece of crap here.
I know these kinds of stuff are not welcome here, sorry anyways. But am I sorry if it's insulting? Of course not. Those who really feel the insult in this shit are listed below.10 -
Sooo there is a website out there that teaches you how to code and rewards you by undressing a girl after you complete each task successfully.
Not going to endorse them here but I have really really mixed feelings about that.
Opinions?11 -
Playing Portal 2
Not only has this game a need for understanding highly complex problems - but it also was the first game besides Minecraft I started to mod and really had something valuable come out!3 -
Guys I need your help. I'm a student working at a very small development business as a developer ( who would have thought) and I really love working there ( nice colleagues, I learn something every day) but recently I don't get enough work. it really feels like half of my day is spend running after the seniors asking for work and it starts to get really annoying not only for my but for them too. and most recently I'm just going home early because I don't want to just sit there unproductivly :/ but this is not really a solution either because at the moment I'm trying to work 40 hours ( I get paid 20) to get some overtime to not have to work as much as soon as my university starts. but now I don't get my hours and have to chase for work... does anyone have any advice for me?6
-
Not really through coding but more because I joined devRant. Great community and I have already made some great friends :)3
-
Most web developers have to use CSS every now and then. I don't really mind using CSS every know and then, but one thing really bugs me. As a developer, I read ! as "not". In CSS !important becomes "not" important. However, when I read CSS I still read "not" important, when I know this really worked the other way around.
BTW, when I first came across !important many years ago, I really thought it meant a rule was not important, really confusing!2 -
However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5 -
So I did make a few website, they kinda worked well, but they really were ugly as fuck in terms of UI and UX.
So everytime a company was asking "have you got any website to show"
"NO, ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT, BUT YOU CAN TRUST ME I'M A REALLY GOOD DEVELOPER"5 -
Not really a rant but a hear the word 'dump' quite often during the work day and am amazed at how few people giggle at that.2
-
Google simply can't knock off harrassing their users with security theatre.
A friend of mine has a small personal YouTube channel. He has recently been bombarded with several phone verification requests a week: "Verify it's you. To continue your session, complete a brief verification. This extra step helps us keep your account safe by making sure it’s really you. "
While frequent verifications may be understandable on YouTube channels with millions of subscribers, channels with only a few dozen subscribers are not attractive hacking targets. A verification would be justified before a potentially harmful action such as deleting videos or deleting a channel. But not for normal everyday use.
What's next? Will they ask users to "verify it's them" every ten minutes, "just for extra security"? Just to verify that it is "really, really, really, really, really" them?
It's not security. It's security theatre.
Sorry, Google, but users are not in the mood of doing a phone verification every other day.
Has this been Google's perverted wet dream all along?1 -
No offense, but if you're expecting 0 and not -80, then you know you're using floats.... Are there really devs that don't know what floating point round off is?9
-
I really like DevRant, but why can't an avatar look happy, is it because most developers hate their jobs, because of clients or what not?12
-
I really love Mr Robot.
The show though... not the guy...
But there's one thing that bugs me since the beginning:
For security reasons Elliot destroys all his drives and puts his RAM into the microwave which of course is effective but why would you even consider frying volatile memory?
Sure... the data can remain for some time but not that long that he would risk anything...
Any ideas?
Oh and btw... SEASON 3 IS NOT THE END??? LIKE WHAAAAAT?4 -
My friend was a really good programmer he had an awesome working environment and amazing colleagues but still he was not satisfied and left the job he said he couldn’t get arrays
-
I really like to use PHP. It's not so interesting language as C# is, but I like it. But every now and them I read someone complaining about PHP.
So let's go: as PHP is not an exactly good language to backend, what would be a good one to use with my personal projects?
Thanks!17 -
Not really dev but: Starting in a new job this August, I'm going to be honest and say I'll miss the warm days of lunching outside the university's beautiful Informatics department.1
-
!dev
Well fuck you Epic Games and Deep Silver!
I was really interested in getting Metro Exodus, but I'm not gonna install that shitty Epic Store!
Fuck off!7 -
Not anti-man, curious about this particular problem:
Females have unique problems in the workplace and personal life yes, because of stereotypes.
I agree, I am a female. But when i read those articles about what we really go through, I really feel weak. I think if these many obstacles are present how am I supposed to do something without instinctively being influenced by the society.
It really felt better when I consider myself human not female.
What do you people do when you feel weakened by these impositions?9 -
I’ve been sitting down and actually teaching myself to use Linux and I feel powerful :D I’ve always loved it but not really too good in the terminal.7
-
Not really Dev advice, but I appreciated it.
"Do your best to take responsibility for everything that happens to you. Even if it's not your fault."
"On the flip side, never apologize for something that isn't your fault. That includes other people's feelings. You're not in control of their emotions." -
Fucking hell. I usually really like firefox but today it was a real pain in the ass to download sth. It wold download 99% and then stop. I couldn't stop the download and the file was obviously not working. I had to switch to edge and both the design and the fast download really appealed to me. Ffs firefox!4
-
Stroking my own pickle a bit with this one but pretty excited that a YouTube video I did in one take and am not entirely happy with my explanations hit 1000 views... Really should make another one aye...
-
the worst mistake, really, was crashing our production not once, but twice in two days, and being too much of a newbie to recognize it was my fault it broke because of my code1
-
Impostor Syndrome...
I dropped out of university because of Maths (I'm not really that bad at maths, but that thematic wasn't really mine... But whatever) and obviously had no job nor any graduation (except my school thingy) and wasn't able to study something computer science related, because that's how it goes in Germany... (If you can't pass a certain subject, you will get blocked for the studies that involve that subject for 2 years or sth... Because I failed in Maths meant that I'm fucked)
So I started an apprenticeship to atleast do something and get that degree.
In my new company I really felt (and sometime feel it nowadays) like I'm the fifth wheel on the car and don't really achieve anything (but i really do).
That really fuckin sucks and hinders the fun that I could have in my job :/6 -
I would say my biggest insecurity is not getting (enough) useful straightforward feedback from my boss about how I work.
I have a tendency to take a bit longer than others, but deliver code that rarely has to be fixed.
Some of it may appear overengineered but it really isn't... I just like it clean and not hacky.
There are times my boss seems like telling me subconciously that I take too long for my stuff, but then again, he is really happy when we deliver a big thing to a customer and it just works, without any bugs or negative feedback.
It sometimes drives me nuts. 😅2 -
Do people really struggle with CSS?
I thought it was just design and ideas but is it actual CSS y’all struggle with?
Not judging. Just asking to be sure31 -
I really don't mind it as long as the work is on track but damn it hurts to read the git commit messages with messed up spellings. In some cases it's not just that, but variable names, file names, etc. as well.
English isn't the first language in my country and a lot of people are not as proficient with it so it's probably not appropriate to judge, but the cringe is real.
Sometimes I wonder if I am that cringeworthy person to someone else.3 -
Not really doubt my skills but definitely feeling inferior ;)
Reading stuff like this :
https://github.com/kevin-montrose/...1 -
I have noticed that C/C++ developers that deal with backend server technologies are very much likely to resort to PHP for some reason. I have noticed it from serveral developer friends of mine or simply by noticing how the topic comes along sometimes on web discussion forums.
I believe this is the reason why certain extension codebases that deal with php are(for the most part) exclusively done in C++, take Phalcon, written as an extension in C or PHP Swoole, which is written in cpp iirc.
I wonder what attributes does the language, or the tech stack as a whole has that would make this particular kind of developers feel attracted to the platform. Is it that is easy and widely available and they just say "fuck it, I don't wanna spend too much time in this shit" <--- which is a very valid point really.
Or them just having an innate preference towards it?
The Psychology Behind Developers: By Dr AleCx0417 -
Not really a rant but just curious who listens to podcasts and which channel is your favorite?
Mine are Software Engineering Radio and InfoQ4 -
Next year we start web developing in school. Everybody seems to despise it, but since I do not have much experience: Is it really that terrible developing for the www?15
-
So yeah, apparently i am supposed to take part of 'meating'.
I would love to say its joke/meme but no, not really, that happened.6 -
Not really a joke or meme, but not a rant or story. Go to Google search on a PC and search Thanos. Then click on the glove on the right and watch. You're welcome.4
-
https://github.com/jaggy/ideas
I've decided to open source some of my ideas that's stuck in my notes app.
Not really sure if it's useful or not but feel free to suggest some or comment on those ideas.2 -
I really enjoy programming but I don't care about having the latest smartphone or the more powerfull computer. I'm not a tech guy, not even a geek... Sometimes people don't understand me for that, am I the only one ?1
-
I’m not a native english speaker.. had lots of interviews but all rejected me... I guess I was not good at delivering or explaining things... is this language barrier really is important.. working in canada11
-
Do you have the feeling sometimes that programming is not what you wanna do but that you just do it cause it’s the closest to what you really enjoy?6
-
Not really a rant, but now I'm back to a project NATIVE PROJECT WRITTEN IN JAVA!
No more React native for now, yay life!3 -
My team now does daily mini-standups: what you did, what you will do, what's blocking u
But with this wfh, I feel like slacking more or just seen to have less critical work to do... but not sure if the other guys are just "padding their list" or actually really busy.
So wondering when I have nothing to do for work/no defined deadlines or deliverables... How do you look busy?
I do have a lot of optional tech debt improvement work I could do but basically these are like backlog... And not really fun.6 -
I would really love a type-safe python - quickly write a script with all the IDE-coddling that a type system can bring, and run/debug it with no compilation.
I'm a big typescript fan but the compile step and all the issues of the node ecosystem are a pain.
Really wanna play with F#'s scripting capabilities but not yet supported on dot net core.
MyPy is somewhat promising but it's slow and not the most ergonomic, library support is still lagging behind, and it's not expressive as a proper type system.
For all the languages we are blessed with these days, it's an odd void.6 -
I'd like to ask: What's trending at the moment instead....
Either I'm old and senile and missing something, or there is not really sth new.
Okay, JS might be crapping out new frameworks in their common "Not invented here" diarrhea....
But otherwise? What's really new?
I don't really know. I'm not only thinking about languages and stuff, but even in hardware there ain't really a big thing going on in my opinion.
Hab ich wat verpennt?
(Have I overslept?)
We had an interesting and frightening discussion regarding NGINX, as it is russian software today and that a new trend of a true, actively developed webserver is severely lacking... Apache looks semi dead and most other niche webservers, too.
That's all I've seen as a "trend" discussion in the latest time4 -
I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. But I'm sad about leaving all of these stickers (yeah I know they're pretty random)
also, should I get a macbook or not? I really like the OS but I hate it's pricetag. But i heard Apple supports their products for more than 5 years and this laptop of mine is just 3 and a half years old and it's slowing down already even on 16gb memory. IntelliJ used to run smoothly on this.
Can u guys suggest a developer friendly laptop? im not really into gaming so I wouldn't need gaming one 👨💻8 -
I’m really liking the Algorithm Design Manual so far, except for the fact that there’s not a glossary somewhere for “random mathematical symbols you have probably never had to deal with but we will use in psuedocode examples”1
-
when you start really learning C, not "hello world" C but Makefiles and autotools and libraries... is it me or is almost everything a C library and the rest of the languages are just wrappers for C libraries?1
-
So I was on a .NET project for a couple of months, then went to a Angular 6 project, now I'm starting on a PHP project.
I'm just loving these past few months. -
Hate to admit but I am really not feeling react thus far... a function to output an H1 tag that takes many times longer than just creating an H1 tag... why?4
-
I really want to like Fedora, but it feels like they're trying too hard while also not trying hard enough...1
-
Not so much of a rant but recommendation.
Have been listening to a completely epic Spotify playlist all day today whilst coding - "RetroWave / Outrun".
It's really good for keeping my concentration :)9 -
It's not really an 'app' or a 'start up' but over the weekend I build my own personal website:
neilmunro.herokuapp.com
I'll link all my other projects into this site.5 -
Not really a rant, but working on a side project alone is tiring 😴.
It has been 4 days and all I have made is this page and login12 -
At first I was like "meh.. SASS is not really that different from css really.. maybe this wont even help any.."
But now I'm like "dude holy shit please never let me work without SASS/SCSS again!" :D -
It is really hard not to feel arrogant when everyone around you is a shitbag.. but that makes me feel like a shitbag myself so the problem kind of solves itself.2
-
Learn:
Docker, kubernetes, ceph, s3, and aws in general. Not really dev per se, but still worthy technical goals.1 -
I can now leave freely without any regrets!
The slight misgivings I had about leaving this place over the toys they provide, is now gone because I re-realized that while this place adopts new tech, it doesn't adapt to it. So they have shiny tools but the people and processes won't change.
It seems to me that due to pressure to deliver, there is little thought/analysis behind any tech change.
They don't plan to change their wretched delivery pipelines. Everything will be same but on git. So no velocity gains, and same bureaucratic review request process. Such a waste. This attitude applies to their other tools too. They are using a unit test library to write tests that don't use mock. They are using modern languages but without modern idioms. It's like writing C code in C++. And of course theoretically we are agile but actually we're just a waterfall team with managers on our ass everyday and tighter release schedules.
Reminds me of @boombodies recent posts and discussion about business spaghetti reflecting in code.
There are possibly multiple reasons for these problems but I think a large part of it is a lack of empathy/mutual respect. Everyone's too insecure, noone cares for anyone but themselves and people just try to outwit each other. -
Has any of you worked with someone claiming he's a "Senior Software Engineer" but he does not know what he's doing? I'm not saying I'm a very good developer myself but I know how to differentiate a good code from a garbage code and architecture. It's really becoming a pain in the ass...5
-
Not really a programming rant but, I'm pretty sure VW engineers and developers purposely do this:
breakImportantCarPart(mileage, importantCarParts){
if(!underWarranty) {
importantCarParts[rand(0,importantCarParts.length]);
} else {
//do nothing

I feel like an imposter sometimes but then I look at some of my colleagues. I'm not really sure whether that's a good thing or not.1
-
this is not really a programming rant, but I hate people that live by stealing from your pocket, I've lost everything... 12 cards incl. ID card2
-
i am coding blindly cause i am not really sure how the function really works. thats how i get things done after 2 weeks. but at least it works out after a while. buuuut i just want to get this thing done uuuggghhh i need to do this faster!
mind please cooperate with me1 -
I wasn't hired to do a dev's job (handled sales) but they asked me to help the non-HQ end with sorting transaction records (a country's worth) for an audit.
Asked HQ if they could send the data they took so I wouldn't need to request the data. We get told sure, you can have it. Waits for a month. Nothing. Apparently, they've forgotten.
Asks for data again. They churn it out in 24 hours. Badly Parsed. Apparently they just put a mask of a UI and stored all fields as one entire string (with no separators). The horror!
Ended up wasting most of a week simply fixing the parsing by brute force since we had no time.
Good news(?): We ended up training the front desk people to ending their fields with semi-colons to force backend into a possibly parsed state. -

I'm not sure if I really should have celebrated 1024++ by buying myself a desktop PC.
But I really prefer it over any kind of laptop. 😸2 -
I'm not a dev, but the laziest thing I do is probably not programming at all or just copying stuff without much thinking... just not really trying1

You know what really bugs me? How movies show people hacking into something with the terminal and all the matrix code but its really not like that.6

I came across this website: https://webdock.io/en
I really like their prices in return for the specs, but they use Let's Encrypt :\
Not sure how good is Let's Encrypt when handing over payment info and not sure if I should be trusting them anyways.
Anyone tried them?9 -
So my office tends to have seating rearrangements every few months due to the amount of people increasing in the company. In the 1 year that we moved to this office, I have been lucky to not have moved seats drastically.
Today though my team got moved to a new area. The previous area was already pretty small, the new area is even smaller where dual monitors JUST fit on the desk. With more people being hired by the month, there's going to be no more room again. I really wish the company would look at just hiring actual talented staff rather than hiring just to meet demands. Again, it's all about quality, not quantity!! -
Not really a rant but..... Just found this while cleaning my PSP's Memory Stick collection
As a CS student this part makes me feel gud
(It's No Game No Life btw)2 -
I love open source. Really.
BUT I hate maintainers/owners who do not respond to any kind of message/issue/PR for months.
Also of course they dont tell you how you can setup the dev environment yourself :)5 -
I really try to not write passive aggressive replies but people who don't seem to read before typing are making things harder than they have to be.
"Wow, thanks you so very much for the suggestion. I mentioned that I already tested this scenario and that it seems to be unrelated to this case, but thanks for bringing it up again! Now I really question my ability to get my point across"1 -
Incredible that these companies with literally no product, and barely a website (if any) come around offering 100K+ jobs
They have funding out of their ass but literally NO real-world value... it's amazing to me.
Guess it really is not what you can do but who you know.1 -
Spent the day working on a concept for a Survival, Twin Stick Shooter, Tower Defence game. not sure if it will work yet, but everyone I have ran my Concept by really likes it.
-
What if there was like a 1-2 day workshop that helped recruiters be more technically fluent? Like the basics of software development (not programming, but concepts and what engineers really do)?6
-
so I did dry january...
conclusions:
- perhaps a slight amount of more energy, but then I just work way more than i would anyway, since there is nothing else to do
- anxiety / stress not really affected or reduced
- sleep not noticably improved either
so overall I don't think I really get any of the so called "benefits" that the health gurus claim 🤡
needless to say I will be enjoying some scotch tonight6 -
How can I stop colleagues from interrupting me every 5 minutes while I'm working/debugging in a polite way? I'm really annoyed, and I'm starting to become rude, but even that does not stop them.1

I'm surprised how well Dell laptops are made. I'm using 2011 Dell Latitude E6320 and it really works like more modern models. Of course it would be lovely if I had new XPS 15, but it's really not bad for this budget. It just needs SSD drive and it's ready to roll.8
-
I feel i need to be specialized in something coz everyone can code now... like u have machine learning engineers and devops/cybersecurity but im not really into either. What other sub fields are there?4
-
Always always always always always keep writing tests as you implement features. TDD is good thing but not necessary but tests are really necessary. I thought I'll write tests later now the code is so tightly coupled I can test things independently. 😑😑

Not really a recruitment experience, but when I was a uni student, my IT teacher told me face to face that "C++ is not object oriented"7

wow, to think about it , I have not been really 'excited' about stuff for last few years...
Now its like yeah, this is all a rat race...gotta learn this , learn that ,learn everything...but not really excited about it..Maybe feel like a thug-life boss if I get paid or recognised for my work...
However this is a race I am happy to run in,I like coding, like nerdy/smart tech jokes , like learning new stuff, and like my programming life.
A day without opening my laptop is really a day I feel sad but not the other way round. -
Not really a developer thing but...
I was bored so I took apart a 360 hard drive to prove to a friend it's not much different from a computer one
Just special adapter and formatting1 -
Really not in the mood for work.
But since that is not an acceptable reason to ask for a day off, I wonder what excuses I can make to get out of working today... 🤔11 -
Not strictly programming,BUT: does anyone else get an OCD tick or the slight inclination of stroke when loading office 365- make it 2.02 Rads if you really must!4

This is not a happy rant...
Got a new well paying job. Moving up in life. But my wife is not in the same place... She had quite a few career struggles and just lost her current job... It wasn't even a job she went to school for, just whatever she could find...
Now she's getting quite depressed. Luckily she's not envious at me, but does keep saying how lucky she is to have me.
I really want to help her somehow, but this is really a thing I just don't know how... And it just looks like she's not handling it too well. Joking about suicide and crying about being useless... She also keeps saying that all she can do now is be a housewife. We did seek out help for her. But still... I really want to give her better support. I feel useless here.18 -
When you really need a new computer, but you have to pay tuition.

Not really a burnout, but after 10 hours of coding and almost no food it gets extremly hard to concentrae.

"I don't know about changing that part of the platform"
-"Do you see any other way?"
"No, but this one is pretty complex"

-"Would you like me to include the phrase 'this was really fucking complex' in the release documentation?"

at the co-working space where I work today there was an argument between the CEO of this startup and their developer.
not really sure what it was about but at the end the developer was getting really frustrated and he shouted: "I'm telling you REST means HTTP!!".

Do you think it is worth learning functional programming and specifically haskell. It seems like a really good concept, but a lot of people claim that it's not applicable in real scenarios.12 -

What makes WhatsApp not privacy friendly? They don't state that they share contact information and only statistical stuff (App last opened, etc.) Which is marketing, but not really bad. And they use end to end encryption.
By the way, this here is there Whitepaper on end to end encryption. But haven't read through it yet. https://whatsapp.com/security/...15 -
Oh joy,
I got the short straw and get the privilege of building our new website.
I really don't know PHP very well, but apparently everyone else says they know it less.
Yea! Holiday weekend. NOT!!!! :(4 -
You ever feel like it doesn't really matter what you learn, you'll never get anywhere because politics, etc? That's kind of how I'm feeling now. I've been using my time unemployed to teach myself new things, but it's not really helpful when it comes to finding another job. My personal savings can keep me going for about a year, I think. I'd rather not have to test it though.1

Why is it always so exhausting to communucate with clients?
It's been 11 fkin days since I started working on one really simple project, but it's still not done because client can't respond within 1 day...1 -
I really want to try freelancing but I’m terribly terrified at the thought of working with a client and ruining the whole thing or not doing a good job 🙍🏻♀️8
-
How do you break into freelancing? I have a full time job that I enjoy, but am really interested in freelancing. Have created profiles on freelancing sites and bid on jobs with not much success.6
-
Not using my period of unemployment to really delve into freelancing. It's much harder to do on the side. But I lacked knowledge and experience back then.
Also not interviewing companies better. Always ask about everything. -
Unsure of what path to take as a developer.
I'll be graduating from uni next year and I'll probably go into web dev but I'm not really passionate about it building websites for a living.3 -

I work at a small company (4 devs, CTO, a senior, me: mid level, and a new junior dev). Junior and I handle the client projects and the Senior and CTO handle the overall platform and server deployments and such. Our senior dev just gave his 2 weeks notice. I was told they are not replacing him and now ALL of his tasks have been pushed onto me on top of all my already full plate. My issue is, although I am excited to learn about the upper management and deployment stuff, they (CTO and CEO) just dumped all these tasks onto me without even asking if I wanted the added responsibility and also told me there is no monetary bonus for taking it all on. Am I right in being a little mad that I was not even asked if I wanted it and it was just assumed I would handle it all without any bonus or monetary promotion?5

[worst part of a lang i love]
Not really the language, but i hate how sbt works, it compiles small projects instantly, but really slows down at a certain size, and it seems very deterministic. It stays the same speed after that, but once you hit that project size it just immediately starts being slow. -
This is really annoying when you’ve good paid job with really good coworkers but you want to change it... I always wanted to be a programmer but when I started my work in IT trade I got job as administrator... several years have passed and now changing my job is a big deal (degradation of my salary to 1/2 of actually). Started my first internship a couple of days ago as a front-end dev.
Not particularly interested in the position, but also I don't really mind it either; not to mention I needed a job for this semester and this was my only option. The place is quite interesting -- they know the basics of what they're doing, but when it comes to more "advanced" features like version control, it's well, nonexistent. We all just send the files to each other over the server drive.
Stuff like that gets pretty frustrating but I'm not really gonna complain. Everyone including the manager is super nice and it's a really laid back atmosphere. Dunno if all front-end development is relatively laid back, but just thought it was interesting.1 -
Hmmm.. I don't know but something sketchy was going on with my previous employer as they're not really registered here in our country yet so, they decided to put "Freelance" on our job title though we're working full-time or under a contract. Not really sure how that goes. Glad that I left that company.1

`Not really a function, but inserting a ${variable} like this is so convenient in JS.`

Not dev related really

I know devrant is not the place to ask this but I didn't know what else to do....I very often have doubts about weather I like programming or not even when I started learning programming 2 years ago...Does this imply that I don't really like it? Because I believe that if you really like something than you don't have doubts about it but am not sure if I am correct or not.8

Ok so guys, I really love back-end, but sometimes I'd like to do a complete software to show off to friends in my free time, So question:
What programming language should I learn to make gui softwares?
I don’t want them to be pieces of art, just functional and with not too man " unintentional features".
I really love Python, but for gui heard it's meh, but may be wrong
I don't want web technologies
looking forward to learning C, but not necessarily for gui
could try c++ I guess
Don’t want .net (coz you know ms and their Java knockoff)
Ruby seems cool, but it seems to be annihilated by ruby on rails
Not Java but Kotlin seems really cool, could also go with scala, idk
Forgot the other things3 -

Not really gonna go away but software engineers needed for something will decrease due to ease of development in coming years probably2

Not really a rant, but...
during times like the last 3 or so months, being a dev feels kinda extra sweet: the only difference for me has been a raise and increase in productivity -
One of the truth no one wants to say because what can not be can not be.... but...
Maven is fuck... bullshit... failure by design.
For each project I need an own settings.xml. Always something not working. The same artifactory password 10 times there. Null pointer exceptions all over the place. Basics like versioning not really solved.
In all my years with Ant I never had so much problems than with Maven.
This settings.xml is really a design failure. Crap.1 -
Swift versioning is a really shitty bit. But not as bad the unreadable mashed together bastardized horseshit that is objective-c

Not exactly related to the topic but the exact thing is chilling the fuck out .
I always was anxious and was completely paranoid about minor bugs in my application during prod deployments(that is when I didn't know about testing utils and so on) , till the point that I couldn't fix a minor bug in the CSS and I puked 5 times over.
It was rough times but then I got over it and it really helped me alot.
I know bugs are like really not the kind of things you'd want to see in any application but it will arise in every application :3 -
Can anybody explain why in C# when using string.Format("{0:C}", myNumber);

This caused a issues in the PDF I was generating and I'm wondering why the special characters.4 -
I can't stand when people spend a single day familiarizing themselves with a new technology or concept and then come to the conclusion that's it doesn't work and really the old way is great. Not saying all new things are better. In fact, I'm probably more in favor of tried and true methods than shiny new methods. But one day? Really? That's all it took? In this particular case it's code-first DB development. Again, I'm not a fan myself really. But I have a co-worker who said creating tables and and schemas is much harder using code-first instead of DB first. I mean... Neither are hard. I personally think it's easier for basic things like tables and schemas but either way it's not hard. Now SQL triggers and index's all that fun stuff? Yeah code first is probably more complicated (I'm clearly not a database expert or anything). But a day? Really? You know enough to force a design paradigm on the whole company now? Wtf.3

Would wearing a Google tee on the first day of my internship(elsewhere) put forward the wrong impression? Like it's a startup and the culture (supposedly) is really chill but I'm not too sure.1

Not really an impressive one, but I think it's blasphemous enough to be mentioned:
Creating an embedded application, it was not supported to print a float using optimized libraries (understandable since they're not really supposed to be used anyways), but I was too lazy to convert clocks to a time unit by hand while running benchmarks. So I just printed the float as two integers, splitting it to one for the whole and one for the thousands. -

I mean I would really love to help people and improve my knowledge by browsing SO questions and answer to some, but I really do not have the time for it (coming home at 7:30pm and still need to handle family + side projects) and feel guilty to use SO every day without contribuing.
I'm wondering if some jobs description include time to spend for the community? This would be awesome.
This is not a rant but the frustration of not having the time to help the community I love1 -
Ask the community who's hiring, visit user groups and other tech gatherings. Being an organizer really helps also, put that on your resume along with any highlighted side projects. When interviewed and asked something you don't know, say "I'm not sure, but I'm really eager to learn"

Got an enigma to resolve in my school during a treasure hunt (not sure if it's the good expression) which was translating binary in lattitude and longitude. That was not really difficult but fun

Any Emacs users here? I've seen several editor discussion in devRant but rarely mentioned Emacs. I wonder if it is really not loved…8

Just a question people. Consider me a noob.
I have worked on php for a project. It's not too advanced or something but I don't get why people hate it so much.
I really need reasons.2 -
I know it !
But when it finally works (reSharper) it's really not 'that' bad.
But my poor AMD Ryzen 9 3900X is not good enough I think lol.
About 30 seconds init time.2 -
git merge "conflicts"
(not really an issue, but still a waste of time and concentration, when every now and then, using more than one branch, small edits, merge, and rebase, git diff complains about "conflicts" that are obvious to solve for a human but still not for a machine, despite the hype about the age of AI, coding co-pilots and the like...)5 -
Fighting for an hour explaining how a query wouldn't return the data he wanted...turns out it did...but really not sure how... FU Access!

I want to defenestrate the bright spark who came up with JQuery.
Not really, but its fucking hard to use without a proper debugger. A pox on Visual Studio. -
Trying to learn AdonisJS. Looks like a really cool framework, but having a really hard time how all of it really comes together. I get the model-view-controller philosophy that Adonis abides by, but not really how it's implemented.

So is Julia ready for production use? I like Julia but I keep hearing it is not really mature yet. I would like to use it but I am kinda hesitant. What is your opinion?2

Is it me or images are not preloading on devrant? I have them enabled in settings but most images don't load unless I open them. Really annoying. Using android.2

I really want to apply at magic.dev, but I'm not sure it's the right career move right now.
The work is way more interesting than what I'm doing. -
We, programmers are really dedicate our time not just to copy and paste like no brainer. Well I believe there's no brainer out there. But it's not us. We sometimes even forget how to talk with human being. Please understand us you pighead.

I know this is not the best place where I can ask a question, since this is not really a rant but I would really appreciate it if you can help me.
I was wondering if you can suggest me a simple open source Android native game with a set gameplay time ( aka some racing game where the duration could be 3-5 min depending on the players actions, but not infinite) and possibly different levels of difficulty.
Yes I googled this and I found several good ones, but I am looking for more suggestions. -
Felt really good yesterday and today having a fresh enivronment to work on my code in. I may not know much about my framework, but I'll be damned if I don't know how to figure it out.
