One of my favorite aspects of devRant has always been getting to learn more about the awesome people who use it. Beyond just the awesome stories posted by many here, one of my favorite ways to learn about and feel connected to the people here has always been desk/setup reveals. I personally love seeing different kinds of setups from all over the world, knowing that’s what the people here use to do their work and compute in general.
As an experiment, we want to try a few different things to highlight desk/setup/remote coding location posts. First, we’ve created the first devRant Instagram account, which is completely focused on developer desks/setups/workstations/remote coding. Please check it out here and follow: https://www.instagram.com/devdesks/
I want to use the account to bring more attention to the wide assortment of setups the awesome members of the devRant community post from all over the world. We’ll promote cool desk/setup/remote work images that are posted on devRant to the Instagram account for more exposure/additional audience.
Beyond that, I also want to try to come up with a way to better organize all of the desk/setup posts on devRant and encourage more of them. One kind we don’t see that often that I personally really enjoy is people coding with their laptops in locations that show the culture of their country or something special about the region they are from. Personally, I’m going to try to post some of those for where I live and work.
So how can you help with this effort? It’s easy! We encourage people to post their setups/working remotely pics and we will start featuring them on the Instagram account and hopefully elsewhere in the devRant app for some increased visibility/searchabilty over what we have now (since pics are kind of hard to search).
Also, we plan to make the weekly rant this week “post your setup,” so maybe wait until then to post, and you can work now on getting that awesome shot :) I know a lot of people here love photography like I do, so I think that part is fun too.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or questions about this, and I’m looking forward to seeing the desks/setups of many more devRanters in the next few days!
P.S. not a requirement, but one thing I think makes these photos better looking through a lot of them is when there is code visible in some way.44 -
Heard a conversation between my colleague and the boss
Boss: (saw my colleague's messy desk) hey, could you organize your desk? It's not nice to see when clients come in. You know what they say, messy desk represents a messy brain..
Colleague: (glanced over to the boss' empty desk) and what does an empty desk say for the brain?12 -
New avatar options! New bg colors (yellow and blue), new hair styles (short spikey, mohawk, dreads), new shirts, new stuff to put on your desk, and new glass desk13
-
I think devRant should let us to put some cats also on our avatar desk, in order to be more realistic. My cats don't like staying under the desk. :D15

From my years at college employment:
A student brought in his personal printer to help desk, complaining that the printer is printing red streaks, when he only has black ink installed.
Opened up the printer, found a packet of ketchup stuck in there.2 -
*Tries to pull down code changes*
*Repo is dead*
*Tries to load IDE*
*IDE is loaded via the cloud and it is down*
*Tries to contact help desk*
*Help desk is down*
*Sits in silence*
Guess I am done for the day.6 -
This is Spork. Spork lives on the desk in my apartment.
My girlfriend bought the plant for her office but he wasn't getting enough light there so now he has a better home on my desk and gets lots of sunlight during the day.4 -
I don't even have a desk at home, I just put my laptop anywhere I feel. And sometimes I just want to be by the fire ^^5

Got a new deck of cool cards for me, my brother and a friends for their birthdays 😁
Thanks for your rant @BambuSource long time ago!

Root rents an office.
Among very few other things, the company I'm renting an office from (Regus) provides wifi, but it isn't even bloody secured. There's a captive portal with a lovely (not.) privacy policy saying they're free to monitor your traffic, but they didn't even bother using WEP, which ofc means everyone else out to the fucking parking lot four floors down can monitor my traffic, too.
Good thing I don't work for a company that handles sensitive data! /s But at least I don't have access to it, or any creds that matter.
So, I've been running my phone's connection through a tor vpn and sharing that with my lappy. It works, provides a little bit of security, but it's slow as crap. GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER, REGUS.
AND WHILE YOU'RE AT IT, CLEAN THE SHIT OUT OF THE FUCKING BATHROOM FFS.
Ugh. $12/day to work in a freaking wind tunnel (thanks, a/c; you're loud as fuck and barely work), hear other people's phone conversations through two freaking walls, pee in a bathroom that perpetually smells like diarrhea, and allow anyone and everyone within a 50+ meter radius to listen to everything my computer says.
Oh, they also 'forgot' to furnish my office, like they promised. Three freaking times. At least I have a table and chair. 🙄
Desk? What desk?
Fucking hell.20 -
I can not function today in my hot office (no AC). I'm just reading rants in JSON format to look like I'm working. I may need a USB Desk Fan to improve my productivity. Anybody have recommendations?8
-
That's my setup. Awesome fact: this desk was build by my dad at least 15 years ago, he made one for me and another for my brother, it probably will still be around if I ever get kids :)6
-
I’ve finally gotten a desktop for work. So I don’t have to use my own mbp.
I think I’ve got enough screens, for now.
What annoys me is that none of them are same type, size or brightness12 -
Me: Making me work 17 hours without a 8 hour break is illegal.
Manager: You just sit at a damn desk all day and long shifts are required of IT
???????? Do you really think I just sit at my desk twaddling my thumbs?13 -
Finally I could get the correct computer :)
Just missing the raised arm for the screens instead of desk stands
(ok,my real desk is not transparent but it was to cool to not take ;) )2 -
Working from home now check out the new setup. All that's missing is some devRant swag "wink wink nuge nuge know what i mean yes yes ....." Let me know what you think.3

I'm a diehard Apple fangirl, watch every keynote and have only ever had Macs (my parents are also diehard)
But I seriously envy the Android robot dude. He's so damn cute. Apple gotta get a better mascot I can keep on my desk.23 -
My home setup.
I love having a huge desk.
I can fit my work setup and I still have space for some mess (and university stuff) 😁6 -
Why do people insist on moving stuff on my desk!
I've very particular about my desk, have my monitors, laptop stand, stands for devices etc. setup the way I like them, and every so often someone sits at my desk when i'm not in and just shoves everything around.
Last company I worked for, I came back from holidays to a thunderbolt cable, the connector of which, had been crushed under the wheel of a chair, because someone left it on the floor.
... Is it wrong or not "proper", to send around an email saying the next person to touch my stuff gets stabbed?10 -
I was here, before it was wk119...
This is my desk. There are many like it, but this is mine.
The setup is a little dated, but I love it, and when remote working, I've to use the company laptop anyway.
Specs:
Intel Xeon 4x3.3GHz
16gb DDR3
geforce gtx 680
SAMSUNG evo SSD+some HDDs
3 dell ips displays with display port
And my beloved g15 & g70010 -
The office decided to buy us all ice-cream. I got mine out the fridge put it on my desk and before I sat down was asked to join a meeting, after that on the way to my desk got called over to help someone. Eventually got back to find my ice-cream had melted over my entire desk :(1
-
I found that the best place to work on code was at one of my best friends' apartment because:
- cat
- comfortable desk with more screens that I could ever wish for
- coffee AND beer machines at one arm extension from the desk
- cat8 -
The company that I currently work for has a strict clean-desk policy. So strict, there's even have a little booklet that they have about 1000 copies of lying around the office everywhere. In the booklet is a playful description (with cartoons!) of what can go wrong when sensitive information is lying around, or shared with outsiders through careless talk, etcetera. Employees are encouraged to take a copy of the booklet home.
Also in the booklet is a description of the importance of having a good password. It mentions the required minimum (x) and maximum (x+1) length of passwords, mandatory character classes, and how often the passwords have to be changed.6 -
My second computer was a large tower (486DX). When my Mom saw it first time under my desk she asked me: "Is that a mini fridge under your desk?" Me: "No Ma. Its actually a "smart" heater..."4
-
I know i'm late to week 119... but I just finished assembling my desk.
Pardon the taquito, it's lunch time and I missed breakfast.
I think my desk has a built in whiteboard... 😂16 -
what do you think of my setup?
/* picture of desk with 200 monitors, 7 keyboards, a flying mouse, a rasbperry pi with a human head, and a desk lamp */5 -
I took wk119 to clean my desk and make my wife happy (for a short period of time).
WFH Setup has been rearranged shortly and is not finished. Most of the soldering/Arduino/Pi/drone stuff has been removed and will get a seperate workbench soon.
Lightning is not finished as i plan to reinstall the smart lightstripes again.
But hey , cleaning the desk is enough for this week :-)3 -
I am all for not senselessly disturbing the natural grown chaos on my desk.

I used to work with a guy that fell asleep at his desk. Apart from that he was a great guy. Learnt a lot from him (sadly not the sleeping at the desk part).

New desk! :)
(Delays with my robot, if anyone's wondering, because I had to get a few pieces laser cut, and I was putting my new desk in) -
My favorite thing on my desk would be my laptop.
If only it hadn't DIED three months ago after being impossibly slow for three months before that.
RIP you useless machine, RI bloody P ._.11 -
Desks seem to be a thing, currently. This is my desk. There are many like it, but this is mine.
The setup is a little dated, but I love it, and when remote working, I've to use the company laptop anyway.

Me: Can I ask you something today? Are you available?
Senior dev: If you help me move to my new desk, then yes.
In the end he didn't even help me.... U.U3 -
It's not really a rant but has anyone tried yoga? I absolutely love it after being stuck at my desk for hours and hours. Highly recommend giving it go! 😊6
-
My desk is organized for me. I know where everything is. You don't need to understand my desk because you don't sit at it for 8 hours a day.3
-
I decided to create this so that my head would not need to look down. I noticed when just putting laptop on my knees my head has to look down and it causes headaches when looking down. So this "desk" make me no need to look down.
The desk has wheels so you can relatively easily move away from bed.
So prototype is done, now this could be improved to look better. Idea for furniture makers - you could do this and sell :)18 -
Got a second 1080p monitor for Xmas ans it gave me an excuse to clean my desk off ;)
I included the obligatory 'screenfetch' window as well, haha.
Now to see if I can hack together something resembling a KVM switch from parts I have, to use the Mac mini on one of them (when it's needed on rare occasion, lol).
P.s. I'm sure many of you have more bad ass setups, I even used to have quads myself... But I'm not posting this to start some pissing contest! It's just mine and I'm proud of it :P
Happy new year everyone!!!!6 -
So since everyone is sharing their setups and I just finished cleaning the desk, here it comes. The rice is still in progress since I switched to NixOS two days ago2

I fucking love my job. The boss just bought all the devs, QA and support guys brand new sit/stand desks and gaming chairs. Those chairs are so damn comfy! :)2

Spends 5 days working from home at my desk.... Stressful week...
Spends weekend playing diablo 3 with son at same desk.... Relaxing...

So this is my desk.. really organized and clean as you can see.
Let's start from the left.
That naked motherboard you see is my enterprise grade server running Debian on an intel i3 something with 4GB of ram and a 500gb hdd.
Moving on to the right you can see some flutes (Notice the pink one).
Then there is my beloved laptop running Manjaro Linux with VS code open on a random script.
Following you'll see my BEAST tower pc with lovely RGB keyboard and mouse and another random project open.
And I guess that is it. Enjoy1 -

I'm not a developer by profession and my home setup is always messy (where I develop personal projects) but I am an intern sysadmin so here is my office desk :) wanted to join the whole show your desk movement
Pardon me if the tags are not right. Im fairly new and mostly a reader.1 -
Never thought I would like a standing Desk, but this is pretty great. Got horrible sleep last night, was falling asleep at my desk, so I stood up and pulled the desk up and WAM! No more sleepiness! Who needs Coffee or Soda when you have the power of STANDING.6
-
Hey devs, really need some help here. This is driving me crazy...
We're currently taking issues from the company via mail. We've got a group mail that goes to the three of us at the IT department. Problem is, colleagues just forward customers emails without event trying to help, which means that we get stupid issues like "I can't sign in", and no further information. We're currently using Jira, and I was thinking perhaps we can set up a Jira Service Desk? Then we could have an internal help desk where issues could be submitted, and require some important fields, and perhaps add a checklist. Have you had any experience with Service Desk? Do you think it would be a good idea to have a "normal" person have an account there as well to filter out the normal "Have you tried restarting your computer" stuff? Is it suited for non-developers?
Any other ideas?
Yeay, messy question, but I'm fucking desperate...5 -
My wallpaper is a little fishy!
I've loved marine life for a long time. I finally downloaded a bunch of oceanic Unsplash photos for my wallpaper. It's awesome.1 -
There is nothing on my messy desk other than never ending work. Damn, I need to get something. What can I get,
* a toy : not my kind of stuff
* a bike : not enough room
* a small plant : hard to find in the dessert (uae)
Damned.2 -
When I was younger my mom would tell me to clean the soda cans off my desk. Now my wife tells me to clean the beer cans off my desk. It nice to have a beer when late night programming :)

When you're talking about how awful it is and they think you mean your desk
I have an HP stream
this thing is a McFucking™ potato (and it's HP so i can't even get inside and replace the stock parts for good ones without breaking it)9 -
Share your desk!
This is 80% of time my desk, besides this kitchen (also living room) table.
I can sit here for eight hours straight without standing up. No, I don't have any back issues or smth.
I wonder how your workplace looks like47 -
Started a new game dev job. Fortunately, they already have a Rubber Ducky chilling at the desk. Only thing, it's less of a duck and more of an evil imperial guard with a lust for bloodshed. I hope he likes C++.1
-
Man collapses in the street, his wife "help, we need a doctor".
Dev speaks up "I did recently move to a standing desk"1 -
Now everyone were sharing their worksetup I thought I would want too to.
So here it is.
I have two laptops (one belongs to startup I work at) I use same keyboard mouse for both using synergy.
I have my editor and node server in one laptop and I check them out on other laptop (both are medium range laptop hence they are not exactly powerful). I am running Linux mint in both.
Then I have some embedded stuff on desk which is my hobby(currently working on esp8266 dev board that I built).
You can also see a projector clock I built projecting current time on left beside my bigger laptop. (Projection is on wall beside it)1 -
give mediocre server capacity... put multiple webapps and db on that.....exepct to run properly all the time......awesome expectations1
-
Lately I've been taking my health more seriously than the bugs ! What about you guys ? How do you stay fit ?11
-
My turn to post my desk setup!
I know it's a mess :D
Also, phone for some reason despises making pictures...11 -
Attached to this post should be a photograph which features one of my workspaces, in addition to some JPEG compression artefacts.11
-
Morning guys. How are your desks? Do you use normal desk or maybe standing one? Do you keep your desk clean or maybe it's more like a mess? Haha!
If someone is curious about my hardware on the photo:
- Dell XPS 15 9550
- Marshall Mode Headphones
- 16gb pendrive that's in business card format but just the important part of it as you can see
Post your desks!
Greetings from my coding buddy cactus 🌵12 -
Few weeks back, I have subscribed /r/battlestations and drooling everyday. Now with this latest devRant news, it's time to save money or sell my ass on street to
1) buy a wide monitor or monitors
2) buy backlit keyboard and mouse
3) buy a good desk
4) buy a good chair
5) buy/rent a room with enough space
Forget about buying and setting up a good unit, I can just use my potato laptop for one photo taking. *dry-laugh*

when you find 3 spelling errors in the same line of code and realize that these are legit 'cause the objects and methods are actually coded misspelled.
That's when no one dare doing code review but simply it builds and its fine.
Luckily #NotMyCode -
Besides assorted craft materials and PC my desk has a dual purpose crocheted rubber duck: it serves as a pin cushion and my debugging friend! I made him and he has lived there since my first year of university.
I also keep a mug from my university, scented candles, notepad and pen (for all my tech savvy-ness, quick notes are still better handwritten) and whatever crafty project I'm working on.
My desk is honestly a mess (I have to clear it ~three times a week to have any space to work on) but they say creative people have messy workstations so I take my inability to keep an orderly environment as an expression of my creativity.1 -
Bought myself a standing desk (one that rests on top of an existing desk), a new chair with good lumbar support and a few other office bits and pieces before the end of the tax year in the UK. I didn't think I'd be able to put them through my Ltd Co next year because of IR35 changes, but they have been delayed now.
The only thing I don't have yet at home is dual monitors. Otherwise the setup feels great. 30 Mins sitting followed by 30 Mins standing is doing wonders for my old back2 -
I come into the office today and a new guy is sitting at my desk. alright, I introduce myself and explain this is my desk (btw I work in an office where some workers share a desk, me being the most senior tech the desk is reserved for me) and he gives me a dirty look, gets up, and doesn't say anything. could you be more of an asshole?
has this ever happened to anyone else ?5 -
Have no words. Just got an email from a recruiter for a 6 months contract in a vendor company for a position....the final customer will be my current employer where I am already working as a full time employee. No mistakes because it is a very specific role.
At least please read the CV when you have one!2 -
Can't wait to set up my custom standing desk at home made from Ikea parts. It will be based on the design in the link below but with a few modifications since some parts aren't sold anymore. Anyone using a standing desk?
http://blog.schertz.name/2014/04/...3 -
Me, inside: "I want to go hiking! Enjoy the great outdoors!"
Me, outside: "I should start a new programming project! [mind wanders...]" -
My standing desk (yes with a button became a standing desk) with a usb pedal that I scripted on Linux to move the mouse cursor.
There are also papers top of the monitor to help me to remember new hotkeys of Vim or other software.
My "clean" desk with a lot of fidgets that right now is quite clean.4 -
currently working at making our orders electronic. told my 70 years old, not a computer having boss.
"I want to see that on my desk tomorrow"1 -
So I felt like I had to give anotherone of these updates.
When I arrive at work all I do is connect my ThinkPad to my dock, and both monitors, keyboard and mouse goes live. Got a Hyper X Alloy and Corsair Harpoon just the other week, so no more bringing and ruining my own stuff. Just being able to "be live" in 1 minute is wonderful.12 -
Anyone else work at a company where the employees don't know the difference between a developer and a help desk person??3
-
Once, our boss asked my colleague (Android developer)
- Does Whatsapp need internet to send/receive messages!
- why can't you send apks via SMS!
now he's our ex-boss1 -
Can someone come and clean my desk? I not on the mood and my code to clear the desk seems to be stuck in a wtf loops.4
-
I cleaned up my desk and decluttered everything to freshen things up.
It's much nicer to have a clean desk especially when a desk is the only 'office' in your business.
It's not perfect, but it's much better than before :)
PS: I wouldn't dare to share the mess it was and burn it through your eyes... It'd be a sin.6 -
Never trouble me when I am codong on bisual studio in windows. I will bash your head into my desk.
You read it roght, INTO my desk!5 -
My colleagues desk is so messy that they have actually started to expand their mess onto neighbouring desks...
Their gym clothes are currently on the desk next to me which is actually behind them!
My obsessive tidyness can't take this!1 -
From the window by my desk I can see helicopters, jet planes and the occasional bird attacking people.
What do you see out your window by your desk?8 -

How should I put this... I have REALLY enjoyed help desk job more than anything thus far.
I've seen people posting about how dumb clients may be, and I know there's also those cases, but ultimately those are usually just good inspiration to comedy.
So here's the background: I was working in growing website development company (marketing called it digi-office for some reason). The clients were firms ranging from local bakeries to international suppliers.
The intriguing thing with working in help desk was usually smaller tasks and direct customer contact through e-mail. I got feedback (which always important) and the rush of good feeling at the end of every task; faster and more frequent than working on a year project. But the cherry on the cake is that I got to investigate problems within each websites' and the CMS's code base, fix them or point out bigger flaws in systems and blame others from them. 😂
How your help desk experience differ? Or do you also recognize the good side?1 -
isnt it good if companies ensure that users have baaaaaasssic computer literacy if their job requires it...1

I was sitting here and thinking about ways to make money with software! Then, i got this great idea: bashroulette / russian bash!

I keep my desk at work uncluttered, and I haven't set up a workspace at home yet, but when I do, the pride of my desk will definitely be my namesake.

Cleaning up my desk at the office today. As I'm sure is the case with most of us, I have a draw that's full of old technical crap that's not currently in use (mice, charging cables, USB hubs, routers, access points, cameras, old phones and iPads, you get the idea).
Found out that not only do I have an extra Mini-DVI to HDMI dongle; I apparently have 3 of them. That's more than I've got available Mini-DVI ports to begin with.2 -

What does everyone keep on their desk? I have a rubber ducky for debugging, Google glasses for days I want to threaten to leave, and a few poker chips to play with when I need to think.1 -
Aight I’m looking for a new studio desk ad I looked online and the type of ones I want are FUCKING 2500$ so imma just design one or if anyone has any other options for Audio Recording desks then please help me out8

From experience, what are the pros n cons of a standing desk?
Is this considered one or is a full desk better?
Biggest concerns are the cables and the weight/stability. Can I liftit or lower without it quickly dropping or the monitor falling over.
https://cnet.com/news/...4 -
We have about 12 standing desks at the office for people who say they /need/ them.
I only ever see two people standing.
One guy is standing every month for a few days, and sometimes for the whole month.
The other one, where a whole team moved for so he can have his standing desk, has his desk up high every day but is sitting on a high stool in an unergonomic way, slouching forward.
All the other people just don't use it ever.
Plenty of people who want to actually use it don't get the opportunity.6 -
I prefer to have lesser things to my desk except my monitor I connect my laptop to and my speakers and peripherals.
I like my desk to be absolutely as clean as it can get. -
Depends on which desk we're talking about...
Office desk: an empty can, a tophat well as a demo and some Russian paracetamol I found from a pocket of my winter coat.
Home Office #1 desk: the keyboard for another computer, a plant, a bunch of magazines and newspapers belonging to someone else, a roll of kitchen paper, someone else's meds, a cup of cookies, another cup of small tomatoes, a Swiss army knife, a bike computer and a tablet.
Home Office #2 desk: wife's laptop, a bunch of chargers for a myriad of devices, a Kindle, some envelopes full of stickers, others with bills, a lot of random crap, and usually when I'm at the desk, one or two purring felines -
me: wanting a clean table to work, the less stuff the better, best would be a single notebook and nothing else
also me: backend dev, so 3 monitors, extern keyboard and mouse, some documentation papers and oh where is this cup coffee of last week coming from? -
My desk is usually clean. I have a small sponge ball and a drawing pad on my desk. Its not much, but it does help me get through the daily pressure. I've seen people keep a small plant on their desk but I dont understand why . Maybe i will if I keep one.3
-
Righto guys I need a desk. Not a gaming desk. Just a desk. I have no room for my third monitor. So for all of you 3 monitor Devs what desks are you using?9

The following piece of advice will be for those aspiring for an IT service desk position:
When companies are looking to hire service desk agents, they're primarily looking for socially skilled people with strong communicative skills, rather than primarily technically skilled people. When I first joined the IT world, I went on different interviews for that position and across all of them there was one truth: all the interviewers were eyeballs-focused on my social and communication skills and a mere thin layer of technical skills was required (depending on how technical the service desk). In fact, I immediately got aggressively dismissed twice for two of those when I filled in a Myers-Briggs personality test according to my Sheldon-type personality (selfish, condescending etc). Conversely, when I applied for a new position and I faked that test into answering everything focused positively on the social aspect, I was an immediate top candidate.
Here's a definition from the ITIL Foundation course, chapter Service Management: Because of how lateral the function of the service desk has become today (not only used to solve technical issues, but also company-wide issues), the most important and valued skills when hiring a service desk agent are fully focused on empathy and soft skills and none of those are technical skills. This is because the service desk has people that are the front window of your company and thus you can't make social mistakes as to protect your company's reputation. That risk has to be minimized and you need the ideal people. The people who in fact solve the technical problems are behind a back-office and they are contacted by the service desk agents.
In the beginning, when I did my first service desk job, I also thought: "Oh, I'm going to have to convince them I'm this technical wizard". In the end I got hired for being able to explain technology in human language and because in the interview I successfully communicated and explained ideas to both the team manager and the CEO, not because I knew what goes on inside a computer. This is a very important distinction.
My friends have also been in service desk positions and ironically they were the most successful when they were empathetic slimeballs (saying: "of course, anything for you" while not meaning it, constantly making jokes), rather than people with integrity (those got fired for telling the customer they were wrong while being unfriendly).
I hope this helps.8 -
