Python. Changed a function to return a tuple instead of one value in some database code. Tests pass, gets deployed, everything works. End of the month comes. Suddenly, we get a report that we're draining people's bank accounts and credit cards.
It turns out there was an untested bit of code inside the billing process that used this function. It used the function that was changed. To make matters worse, when the exception was thrown, the billing had already completed successfully, and due to another unrelated bug it would retry despite this.
So, needless to say, type safety and good unit tests are things I prioritize nowadays.7 -
My girlfriend has these :D

When you move a bunch of cables you haven’t touched in a while, and underneath you find this 🥳
Guess I know what I’m taking to work on Monday.3 -
A real interaction I just had...
Team Member: "Can you handle this ticket for a bug fix?"
Me: "Whats the problem?"
TM: "We aren't exactly sure..."
Me: "Ok, so can you show it to me?"
TM: "We can't get it to happen again, and when it does the machine freezes and we can't debug it..."
Me: "So, if I find a fix then how do we test to make sure it worked?"
TM: "I'm not sure..."
Then today,
Product Manager: "How's that bug fix going?"
Me: "Well, let's see. The problem still hasn't been defined. I have never been able to recreate the issue. I have a hacky fix in a PR..."
PM: "Great, so we can deploy today?!?"
Me: "No, because we have no way to reproduce or test this issue at all..."
PM: "Do you think your fix will work?"
Me: "Honestly, no. If you're asking for my opinion then you can have it. IMO this is NOT a bug fix but a change to how the system operates altogether. This system was built by someone who didn't know what they are doing. We have done our best with it but it is a house of cards. And now the solution is to replace a card at the bottom layer. It is likely that no matter what fix we do (even when we can fucking test it) that it will topple the house of cards..."
PM: ~Looking at me in disbelief~
Me: "If you ask me for my honest professional opinion then you will get it. Keep that in the future if that honest response was outside what you expected."
PM: "I will do that, thanks for your assessment"
Where do we go from here? God only knows.
Praise Joe Pesci5 -
Got a new deck of cool cards for me, my brother and a friends for their birthdays 😁

Today I found somebodies phone... Together with his bank cards in the flip protection wallet ... I was able to turn it on and charge it so I awaited a call and now through the caller I was able to return it to its owner within 2 hours of finding it 🥰 got a nice bottle of booze as a reward8

Motherf-...
Well, I've got a separate email address from my domain and a unique password for them. So shortening it and risking getting that account stolen by plaintext shit won't really matter, especially since I'm not adding payment details or anything.

Yeah fuck you too. I don't even have a credit card. It's quite uncommon in Europe, you know? We don't have magstripe shit that can go below 0 on ya.. well the former we still do but only for compatibility reasons. We mainly use chip technology (which leverages asymmetric cryptography, awesome!) that usually can't go much below 0 here nowadays. Debit cards, not credit cards.
Well, guess it's time to delete that account as well. So much for acquiring fucking knowledge from "experts". Guess I'll have to stick to reading wikis and doing my ducking-fu to select reliable sources, test them and acquire skills of my own. That's how I've done it for years, and that's how it's been working pretty fucking well for me. Unlike this deceptive security clusterfuck!14 -

So me and my wife offered a friend to build and host a website for him for free for the first year when he was starting his business. We all agreed and wife started to build it.
The only thing that she had left was getting pictures and texts from him that would be on the site. That was 10 month ago.
And Today - it was suddenly SUPER IMPORTANT to get the site up because he has left alot of Business cards at a conference.
Wife - who is studying answered that she can fix it in a few weeks because she does'nt simply have time.
The dude sent this now:
"Ok no worries, I have solved it myself"
So I checked:
The domain he bought, is just a redirect to "randomshit.wixsite.com"18 -
Other: I need a computer with a very good graphics card because I do a lot of powerpoint presentations and excel charts.

IKEA can't "assemble" a functional website. I spent two days, had 4 checkout attempts and used 2 cards and 3 browsers to get to this stage.
Still beats driving to the store.5 -
On my first day at work i was given the task to rewrite some code. I pulled the code, started the server and was greeted with a login-page. Instead of asking for credentials i tried good ol' " OR 1=1;#. Instand login, admin account. My boss was baffled, but instead of fixing this he decided other tasks had "higher priority". 3 years later, this still exists. I also heard some client runs the application open on the internet.
Everyone wants security, but some people decide to pull out the bottommost card in the fragile house of cards of security6 -
I'd actually like to send some devRanters Christmas cards but that would involve me getting their addresses and I get those privacy concerns + some people would say I'm slowly collecting addresses...
Any suggestions?42 -
My internship so far :
-SVN
-Visual Basic
-A company proprietary framework that I won't ever use again
-Windows everywhere
It kinda fails my technical expectations. But what's great is that everyone there is very nice and relaxed, Nerf gun fights at 4pm and playing cards after lunch :D3 -
"How long will it take us to build X?"
"How long is a piece of string?"
Very similar indeed. Time estimates are insanely hard even with all the cards on the table, be sure to lay them all out before asking.1 -

- 2 monitors
My parents ended up getting me a Google Cardboard6 -
Yesterday we started coding with my eldest son, with some board game (based in scratch), and it was so fucking amazing! I'm partial, but he's a fucking code genius!!!
In the game, the child "code" some functionality with cards and the adult (me) compute them 'doing the actions'.
I'm so fucking proud!!! Well, I'm always proud of my children, and there the English language doesn't convey very well my thinking as the verb to be doesn't differentiate the intrinsic state of a subject and a passing state:

*Relaunches SMPlayer to use dedicated Nvidia GPU*

Alright, got it. I bought this fucking PC just for its fucking "powerful" GPU. It already locked me into using WanBLowS on that piece of garbage. Yet now that NvuDiA piece of garbage is gonna act worse than a fucking paperweight?! Seriously?!!
FUCK YOU NVIDIA!!! Linus Torvalds called your shitty cards shit on Linux.. I call it shit on every fucking OS out there!!! MOTHERFUCKERS!!!3 -
I used to go through my Google Now cards each morning while eating breakfast.
Google Now has been replaced by DevRant.2 -
We recently took over development of an app. Upon inspection the API had no security, and passwords were stored in plain text. While the manager was slightly concerned, it wasn't a big deal....
That was until, using only a browser, I found the bosses account and personal email address.
Minutes later I was in his gmail, Facebook and credit cards account.
Improving security is now concern #1, and my boss is "suffering" 2 factor authy on everything.7 -
Friday
I also bought another server - will arrive next week
HP Proliant DL360 G8
48 GB RAM
16 cores - 32 Threads
I'll put it some SFP+ cards in it and it will be quite nice11 -
I keep a little box with decks of cards in it on my desk. Shuffling is a good way to keep my hands busy while thinking and solitaire with actual cards is a great way to unpick the knots in my head.4

It was when I ditched React. I replaced it with raw JavaScript, with frontend being built with Gulp and Twig (just because HTML has no includes). Here are the results:
1. Previously, a production frontend build took 1.5 minutes. Build time became so fast that after I push the code, the build was done before me going to Netlify to check build status. I go there, and it’s almost always already done.
2. In a gallery with a lot of cards, with every card opening a modal, the number of listeners was reduced from N to one. With React, I needed 1000 listeners for 1000 cards. With raw JavaScript, I needed just one click listener with checking event target to handle all of the cards.
3. Page load time and time-to-interactive was reduced from seconds to milliseconds.
4. Lighthouse rating became 100 for desktop and 93 for mobile.
But there is one more thing that is way better than all of the above: cognitive complexity.
Tasks that took days now take hours. Tasks that took hours now take minutes.
Tasks that took thousands of lines now take hundreds. Tasks that took hundreds of lines now take tens.
In real business apps, it is common to build features and then realize it’s not needed and should be discarded. Business is volatile, just because the real world is volatile too. With this kind of cost reduction per feature, it became way less painful to discard them. Throwing out something you spent time and emotional resource on doesn’t feel good. But with features taking minutes to build, it became easier.25 -
One year for Christmas, my dad got me an old tower and installed Windows 98 on it. He also got two old-school PCI WiFi cards so that my "new" computer could access the Internet via his.
I started learning basic web development. I would convince my mom (an English teacher) to buy me books on programming all the time when she was getting her own books at the store.
Eventually, I got a book on Blitz Basic and started making my own video games.
Then GameMaker, Java, C/C++, and more web development and design happened until all the sudden, out of nowhere, I'm a computer scientist 😁
It's crazy how much we owe to our parents. And neither us nor them even realized what they were doing at the time!1 -

Alright, question about graphics cards:
I want to get a six-monitor graphics card.
Currently looking at one but there's a thing:
The visiontek radeon 7750 seems great, manufacturer is AMD.
When searching for images of the *visiontek* radeon 7750 vs the AMD radeon 7750, I get different pictures, according to some product pages the visiontek amd radeon is produced by amd though....
They both have six inputs..
Point is: I'm going to run Linux on it (i refuse to install malware/spyware on my system for obvious reasons) and AMD has native Linux drivers for the radeon 7750: are those also for the visiontek radeon 7750?
I'm lost here. Help!19 -
Clients are SUCH FUCKFACES!
So me and 3 friends developed a website and logo for an hr company, run by this woman and she loved it
She was our client for GOMC. Now, since it was a "project" she assumed she didn't had to pay for the whole thing....fine I agreed to just getting maintenance, to maintain goodwill and getting some more clients maybe
One day she wakes up and wants half of the shit altered....NOW, after almost over a month..Fucking bitch
She now wants a fucking RAINBOW colored logo...And she added "it must look professional OK?"...The fuck? Now we have to change the cards, letterheads, UI (entirely). Basically everything and doesn't wanna pay for shit

Client: Yo, there's like a 30k difference between the invoices in the application and paypal.
CTO: Yeah, that's really sad. Btw, did you know that our payment gateway supports credit cards, which won't be shown in paypal?

- Recruiters are as bad as car sellers
- They are not your friends
- They're not on your side
- The less you ask for a job the more they're gonna get
- Keep your cards on your side
- Don't tell them how much you make (they love to know that)
- Set a salary expectation for yourself and push it
- Expect a few-months long job hunting
- If you know you deserve the salary you are asking for keep pushing.
- Be patient.
- Don't give your 2 weeks notice until you signed already for the other company
- Medical insurance makes a big dent on salary
- Keep applying for jobs even if you are advanced in a hiring process.
So far this is what I've been learning through my current job seeking experience.
I hate job recruiters, if you can, avoid them at all costs10 -
Just found a humongous bug in production. The customer relation number, which should have been unique was shared by ten customers.
So instead of 400,000 relation numbers we only had 40,000 unique numbers.
The system is live for 3 weeks now, and we just fixed it on a friday at 5:30PM
If we had found out a week later every customer would have gotten a plastic card with the wrong number, because the cards will be printed in four days...8 -
Client support ticket: we printed the ID cards without leading 0’s can you fix it with software?
Me: unfortunately we cannot because the ID number can be any length. ID 123, 0123 and 00123 can exist. What barcode would 123 go to?
Client: this is ridiculous we will cancel our contract.
Me: i’m sorry we can’t correct for a mistake on your end.
(Side note: I know allowing 0123 and 00123 is dumb but my team didn’t design the business logic)7 -
I went to the tech department at my school to get some solder and a few offcuts of wire, but some generous person gave me 6 raspberry pi's that he didn't need anymore! But that's not all, he also gave me 5 rangefinder sensors, 4 motors, a 4 digit 7segment display, a couple of sd cards, a few other various sensors, and some wires
Oh, and I got my solder, too :)5 -

React is a nice js framework, but I constantly find myself with 50 different files open because every component and related css file is spread across the world. I get why our frontend guy built it with so many modular components, but it makes me feel like back in the day when libraries were a thing and you had to flip through those giant Dewey decimal system drawers of cards to pull out the one little card you want to then hunt for that one little book you wanted to find that one little line from4

Frontend dev for 10+ years here.
"We can't afford to hire you as a senior, so your job title will be 'Frontend Developer' and your tasks will carry less responsibility than expected from a senior"
One year in, team of 2 handling 3 projects.
After merging with the parent company, we got business cards, mine describe me as a "Senior Frontend UI Engineer".
"Well, our customers only trust seniors, otherwise we can't send you to them".
Meanwhile a former colleague earns >1000€ more a month.
Yeah, fuck you too bosses!3 -
After working for this company for only a couple years, I was tasked with designing and implementing the entire system for credit card encryption and storage and token management. I got it done, got it working, spent all day Sunday updating our system and updating the encryption on our existing data, then released it.
It wasn't long into Monday before we started getting calls from our clients not being able to void or credit payments once they had processed. Looking through the logs, I found the problem was tokens were getting crossed between companies, resulting in the wrong companies getting the wrong tokens. I was terrified. Fortunately I had including safe guards tying each token to a specific company, so they were not able to process the wrong cards. We fixed it that night.1 -
Why the fuck is it, that American online companies ONLY ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS
WHY NOT JUST DEMAND FUCKING CHECKS FOR PAYMENT54 -
I worked for a company who supplied CERN with some ultra high end equipment.
At one point the guys at CERN email me "Problem, check this out."
The picture was of some burnt out ultra expensive cards that fit into a larger chassis... the cards looked like they had been exposed to a fire that was located exactly between the cards, but none of the cards themselves looked like they had been on fire. The chips and such looked burnt, but more so exposed to a very hot fire, not like they were on fire themselves.
It was weird. I sent them some crates to securely ship them to our QA folks, and ordered them up about $500k in replacement equipment.
QA later said they never got the equipment, someone "from another department" picked them up from the dock. And CERN never asked about what QA found, that was weird because they always asked.4 -
Instead of making business cards, I bought small index cards. The first time ‘round, I carefully taped four or five together with chalkboard tape and then wrote on them with gold pen. Now I’m just using the index cards and black pen since the reaction to that in person’s been positive. What do you guys think? Are people just humoring me in person?20

Am I the only one who doesn't understand apple card? Like really, it's just the worst pitch ever!
"Apple card. Made by apple. Not a bank" that's a REAL ad I saw today. Why would you trust APPLE more than an FDIC insured bank with decades or (in some select cases) CENTURIES of experience in finance?
"No more card numbers and CVV"
Cool. I get it. Card numbers get leaked and stolen. But that's why banks insure cards and reverse fradulant transactions. How an I'm supposed to use it on Amazon?! I'm sure they have an answer. Like maybe one time use generated cards. But they haven't advertised it yet, and that's a problem!
Why do they think people want this!? And even more so, because I've seen some people are excited: WHY DO PEOPLE WANT THIS?! why is apple trying to make everything?!15 -
Can't believe we still use fax in 2021. Instead of migrating it away for our customers, we virtualize it.
Instead of the old ISDN fax cards we will use virtual serial fax modems. 🙃8 -
I just had another shitty idea, yall know cards against humanity. I wanna make a hearthstone-yugioh-CAH -esque game where the cards are all dev-related. To this day I still don't know how the hell Nvidia makes some of the most powerful graphics cards available, yet manages to somehow also write the shittiest software among them. Somehow not only their control panel application takes an eternity to start, their context menu option makes that run like trash, and even Windows Explorer doesn't go unaffected.
But the solution as always: throw more hardware at it. Maybe that's why they make such powerful cards.9 -
One of my friends works in NVIDIA and slwas previously a part of the graphics department where she worked on the rtx 3070 and briefly on 3080 card. The funny thing is she gets paid very low (SDE in India) and sadly her monthly salary is less than the price of either of the cards. While she is not keen on gaming, some of her mates are in a similar situation and just dream about buying it.
All I wanted to do was point out the irony wherein people who help make the thing themselves cant afford it.50 -
What's with all this micro-certification nonsense that seems to plague the industry? Does anyone actually give a shit that I may have passed some vendor's five day bootcamp?
Apparently I can now have a trophy (virtual, of course) if I complete X online MS courses.
Some of these courses seem to focus on stuff that has no use in day-to-day work.
And I have to actually pay because I learned your product and then pay to maintain the cert in some cases. WTF?!
I can see why the vendors do it---I like free money too---but why have we even let this become a thing.
It's like collecting baseball cards.
I despair of what our industry has become...I really do.11 -
So salty. Just got off from a long day at work with my coworkers after a significant sprint, so we all go to karaoke to celebrate and let loose. But naturally I have to be under 21, and the karaoke place cards, so I end up taking an Uber home by myself, which felt really fucking embarrassing. I wish there were venues in the city that didn't require you to be above the magical number of 21 years of age to have a good time.5

I think I finally found a reason to have a phone with 8GB of RAM.
So that when TWRP craps out on data decryption and decides not even to ask for a password, at least I can push a whole fucking ROM into RAM to unfuck the phone. Because why not?! Why on Earth would software work properly when you can just throw more hardware at it?
Long live FBE, TWRP what craps out on it, and you remember those things.. SD cards for data storage? I could've used an unencrypted SD card so fucking badly right now, you know... Long live soldered in storage that's encrypted, "for security". Except for when the person who owns said data actually wants to use the bloody data.
FUCK!2 -
Just went to book something online. About to click the "Pay" button and noticed the page wasn't secure. Who the hell, in 2017, captures credit card details via insecure 'http'??? And 'https' worked on the home page but not the payment page!! Backed out of that, messaged them and we'll see if anything comes of it.3

Overwhelmed by a shitty codebase? Use the boy scout rule and leave the code you're editing a little better than you found it.
Worked wonders for me when I realized I could spend literal months refactoring and desperately needed a systematic approach.
Little by little that rotting house of cards will turn into something okay. It's a nice feeling looking back after a couple of months and see what you've done to make things better.
Also, make sure to remember the cost of wrestling with hurried legacy solutions in your estimates as well. Just adjust the level of bluntness depending on your work environment: admitting that things can/need to be improved can be unpleasant for some to hear even though it's true.5 -
Gotta love Linux!
Wanted to install Arch on my Rasperry PI yesterday, but don't have a cardreader on my PC. Still had an SD with a different distro (RasPlex) lying around. Popped that in, connected power and ethernet only, looked up the default SSH credentials and got to a blinking terminal on my desktop PC.
Well, how am I gonna format my microSD? Rasplex comes without fdisk, and I booted it from the only microSD slot.
Well, here we go - Extracted arch to a usb thumb drive, chrooted into it, switched microSD cards, partitioned and formatted it from the USB-Arch, installed Arch on it, chrooted from Arch to Arch (😁), set up drivers, network and ssh access, rebooted to my why-the-hell-not distro.
Everything worked!3 -
Seems VISA credit cards have a problem today and i lost some money from my account.
Decided to go full arch on desktop so i don't think about it.
I finished.
That's what installing arch looks like:2 -
Here's an issue I've been having with my PC for the past year;
*gets blue screen of death* (every 5 mins)
*takes out my second pair of ram cards, blue screening stops*
*waits a day, puts cards back in, has no more problems for 1-2 weeks*
*gets more blue screens*
*repeats*
If I leave the cards out, the system NEVER has any issues.
But, I can't play games smoothly on 4gb of ram.
Also, I can't afford new cards.18 -
*places an order on OnePlus' website for that OP6T*
Alright, payment.. with my bpaid card that I ranted about earlier, because apparently the fuckers accept only credit cards. External payment portal, card's got a chip.. well that's gotta be the same payment process as the usual Bancontact purchases then, right? Where you plug your card into your Digipass card reader, get a start code from the website, type that in, amount to be paid, PIN code, and then it spits out another code that you give to the payment portal.
Except it isn't. That CVC thing is apparently the only thing that stands between you using your card and someone else doing the same with your card information. Not even the card itself! Why the FUCK do we even have PIN codes then?! This is even worse than the magstripe and the skimming issues related to it (the magstripe essentially just blurts out your card information to whatever wants to have it, so demagnetize it and don't use the payment terminals who refuse your card on grounds of not being able to read the magstripe afterwards. Your chip should be responsible for that.. but I digress). Credit cards with chips in it that aren't even used. That's what you Americans use? Seriously?!
At this rate, you can keep your fucking credit cards.10 -
So I walked into a business the other day where they make flyers and business cards etc. Wanted something specific so went to what they call their "developers". So they have some kind of dodgy pdf editor open there and I know exactly what I want so I asked can you take a RGB color..... the reaction was glassy eyes. And after that the woman started to scream at me and telling me that I have no idea what it is like to be a "Developer". Ended up walking out and going to another place.....1

Bored waiting for a long running test cycle to complete, so...
Monopoly: Software Dev edition.
All properties are companies with apple and alphabet being the most expensive ones, course the online version plugs into stock tickers to accurately reflect the current share price.
All railroads are broadband providers.
You don't build houses or hotels, but patent portfolios and 'landing on another property' becomes 'infringing on a patent'.
Cards:
- Kickstarter refund, collect £200
- Hit by ransomware, pay 1bitcoin.
- You are sued in East Texas, go straight to jail, do not pass go, do not collect dividends.
- Get out of court free card.
Yeah, I'm that bored that I'm rewriting bloody monopoly...5 -

I'm not very good in remembering numbers. But I have lots to remember: apartment entrance code, maestrocard pin, phone pin, s few pins at work, and so on. So I remember patterns my finger mskes on a numpad instead [if you have played Ingress, you know exactly how it works].
There is a pattern for a bank card. Another one for phone pin, etc.
I've been using this technique for years... It has never failed me. I never could remember my pins, but give me a keypad and I'll enter it right away.

So... After this bullshit https://devrant.com/rants/1523838/...
Me: hey boss, so.. I made a list out of those PowerPoint's on Trello ( more than 50 cards ) , can we sit later to priorize them?
Boss: well.. We can but for me all those are important. And we are gonna have those other requests (THIS IS THE HUGE ONE) next week.
Me inside: aaaaahhhh... Scream to your faceeeee!!! I'm gonna kill you and use your skull as a fucking mug!!! Motherfucker!!!
Me: ok.

There is nothing more fulfilling than working you ass off 2 days, learning a new technology, and getting it to finally work as per the requirements and then ...
getting told that the absolute cunt of a client forgot the release date, announced its release 2 days early and decided to casually ask why there is no app on the released URL (it's a tiny Agonizing Reality [AR] app meant as a gimmick on the invitation cards for an upcoming convention).
My boss told me, the thing I worked on is now being scrapped and will not be released.
Yes, I wish the clients could slowly die in agony by a tree growing out of their appendix. Nature shall reclaim their corpses and feed a happy pig which I would happily have a feast of. 🤗3 -
Fuck graphics cards for only providing 1 hdmi port and then 200 displayport connections. Like every of my monitors have one. Smh2

Writing an efficient, modern renderer is truly an exercise of patience. You have a good idea? Hah, fuck you, GPUs don't support that. Okay but what if I try to use this advanced feature? Eh, probably not going to support exactly what you would like to do. Okay fuck it I'm gonna use the most obscure features possible. Congratulations, it doesn't work even on the niche hardware that supports that extension
If I sound jaded, ya better believe I f*cking am! I cannot wait for more graphics cards to support features like mesh shaders so we can finally compute shader all the things and do things the way we want to god dammit -
My wife often listen my rants about stupid clients, she thinks that I hope to much from them. Like image as actual image not fucking embedded in word document.
Today she agreed to help her friend and make name cards for tables. Got list of names ;) one photo of paper with hand written names on it :D1 -

To be fair, those who aren't on the subway look very homeless.

I love Nvidia's apathetic attitude to Linux support. It makes it so much more economical for me every time I need to upgrade my GPU - the mid-upper tier previous generation cards are always available for around the same price as a lower tier current generation card. There is no buyers remorse when the only things I'm missing out on by not going bleeding edge are kernel panics and random reboots.4

I had a wonderful run-in with corporate security at a credit card processing company last year (I won't name them this time).
I was asked design an application that allowed users in a secure room to receive instructions for putting gift cards into envelopes, print labels and send the envelopes to the post. There were all sorts of rules about what combinations of cards could go in which envelopes etc etc, but that wasn't the hard part.
These folks had a dedicated label printer for printing the address labels, in their secure room.
The address data was in a database in the server room.
On separate networks.
And there was absolutely no way that the corporate security folks would let an application that had access to a printer that was on a different network also have access to the address data.
So I took a look at the legacy application to see what they did, to hopefully use as a precedent.
They had an unsecured web page (no, not an API, a web page) that listed the addresses to be printed. And a Windows application running on the users' PC that was quietly scraping that page to print the labels.
Luckily, it ceased to be an issue for me, as the whole IT department suddenly got outsourced to India, so it became some Indian's problem to solve.2 -

## Building my own router
Damn it! I've got to read more before making decisions :) I already do that, but I need yet *MORE* reading.
So I bought a miniPC which I'm planning to turn into a router. I wanted to install AX200 (wifi6) card in it but it could only see the bluetooth part of it (using btusb kernel module).
What I did NOT know about wifi cards and mPCIe slots
M2 is only a form-factor. It defines what the connector looks like. Over that connector multiple different protocols could be used. m2 (NGFF) WIFI cards are usually using PCIe proto. And USB.
https://delock.com/infothek/M.2/...
My so-desired AX200 uses both PCIe and USB protocols: USB for BT and PCIe for the actual wifi.
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/.... The same spec applies to both: m2 and mPCIe card versions.
Now my mini PC has a mPCIe slot but the label on the board says "USB wifi". Which suggests that it only accepts the USB-related pins of mPCIe (as wiki says about mPCIe: "The host device supports both PCI Express and USB 2.0 connectivity, and each card may use either standard.").
So I guess that means I'm stuck with a useless mPCIe port :D shit..
Now my best bet is to wait for USB dongles supporting wifi6 and use usb AC adapters until then. Well... It's not an optimal outcome. But still IMO a better solution than an embedded router from the shelf!
(No, I'm not giving up and buying another used/new PC :) )
At last I can calm down and stop searching for magical pcie-to-usb adapters :) Phew... That's a relief!1 -

Rails. Fucking rails...
God damn monoliths, built by a cowboy coder.
Every one I have ever worked with becomes (or already is) a house of fucking cards that will blow over at the slightest gust of wind.
The worst part is that you always hear the same justifications from rails developers, then after they convince the higher-ups that “we will build it right, not like those other monoliths” we find ourselves F’ed right in the A a few months later.
It’s this frustration that lead me to MUCH better paradigms like Microservices, Event-Sourcing, CQRS, Domain Driven Design and the like.
When someone says “our backend is in rails” my first response is “so when are you replacing it?”8 -

!rant seems that my raspberry pi serial idea is a little bit complex at the moment and may take a more serious turn later, but I have studied and found DOS based TCP/IP software that will allow me to use my 5150 with actual Ethernet. There are a few 8bit ISA Ethernet cards that will work in the 5150 and separate executables that will configure DHCP, DNS, and even allow me to use a terminal emulator and SSH to connect to *nix based computers over lan! I'll keep you all posted!6

Instead of spending 1h13mins (I measured) on average EACH AND EVERY DAY just telling people whatever is written on the story cards, the robot could tell them for me.
Maybe someone will suggest on the comments that people should just read by themselves on the story cards. Yeah, people will ask you where the toilet is while you are peeing on it. That is why we need robot nannies for professional adults.1 -

Well... I recorded my boss's talk at a small tech conference. Everything went just fine until I tried downloading the video from my camera.

If you have clumsy people around you, your belongings are never safe.
I left the laptop on the table for just a few hours, and this is what I returned to. Someone carelessly moved the laptop to the right without paying attention to the USB stick, so it bent from the table to the right with a higher position.
Indeed, lack of protrusion is the main reason SD cards are better than USB sticks, and why laptops should have full-sized SD card slots, and why external SD card readers are no valid replacement for built-in SD card slots. Relying on an external SD card reader outright defeats the primary benefit of SD cards, lack of protrusion.
One can be careful with ones belongings every day and have them last a long time, but then someone else comes and ruins it for you. Years of effort with being careful have been wasted. Clumsy people will certainly find new creative ways to break your stuff.10 -

Around three months ago in a meeting regarding a new end2end test for a product :
PO: We have a full feature stop, only bug fixes are coming until we can unify all products.
Me : So I can use any selectors without worrying the whole thing breaks with the next update?
PO: Sure.
Last Thursday :
PO: Yeah, we gonna overhaul the entire UI with the next release to get better UX.
Why would any sane person reinvent an entire product thats already scheduled for discontinuation in 2018? And how is it possible that a few months ago nobody knew anything about it? Are they using fucking tatot cards for management decisions?1 -
The graphic cards supply is completely madness. Even after the crypto crash it is not possible to buy RTX cards at price any close to MSRP.
But today my jaw drop when I saw auction on popular online portal where some guy was selling a place in a queue in another store. The title was "Rights to buy RTX 3080" and for 400$ you could potentially buy a GPU for the price close to MSRP. I think this was too much and after a few hour the advert was took down.5 -

I was just begged to play 30 minutes of monopoly with my family
With all those versions of monopoly I'll have to be more precice, it's the worst of them all
It's monopoly fucking zapped, you need an ios device to play it, it's been developed for the iPhone 4 and maybe a tablet because they didn't even update it for current phones, not even iPhone 5
The credit cards are a fucking joke, they work by touching certain parts of the touchscreen and don't work 85% of the time you try to use them, 5% of the time just choosing the wrong person
At least your relieved when 10% chance kicks in where it works for once
Instead they could developed for Android and used nfc tags making it reliable and fun, no it has to be shitty, cheap and frustrating
Like seriously, they could've also used qr codes instead, or just have fucking buttons on the screen because you need the fucking ios app anyway
The minigames are at least a bit of thought, but don't really make sense either

back in college i started a project to manage my MTG and YuGiOh cards. I wanted to have a database for them with a graphical manager (already some older ones on github but i don't like the feel of them).
But between college work, the difficulty of building a SQL database schema for them and the fact I had hundreds of cards I'd need to put into the database manually I dropped the project after the 2 friends working with me also dropped out of the project.
But recently I found this hackster project (https://hackster.io/mportatoes/...), and i'm mostly sure I could retrofit it to use opencv to at least read the card title reliably allowing me to scrape the rest of the information from some wikia page as a new card is scanned. I'd just have to pick up a bin of legos at walmart lol
And previously learned about mongodb which would make storing the cards ina DB a lot easier than dealing with SQL.
I might pick this back up again, but when I first started I had 2 friends working on it with me who both dropped out before I finally gave up, so starting by myself might be a little demotivating. -

I once had a manager who demanded I physically print all of the Kanban cards and tape them to the office whiteboard. I was told to move the cards across the board after they were moved in TFS. I still had to keep up with my other duties in the QA department too!
Despite that, I still stayed on board with the company (the pay was good, and the work was simple.) As a QA teeter, I uncovered a rather nasty security vulnerability that would have put all of our customers data at reach to anybody. I advised my manager, and was told - just ignore it and ship the code please. I refused.
I was threatened with being fired, verbally assaulted, and challenged at the most trivial ways in everything I did after that.
Jokes on him now. I work from home in my dream job, doing what I love, with a manager who actually gives a rats ass about my concerns.
Moral of the story here - you don't have to agree with your subordinates , but you do need to validate their concerns.4 -
I had this problem where I needed to make a script that took two values, and from that printed what card was faulty in a pretty large system.
As the script language is horrible, I could not be bothered to manually write over 3000 if-statements I proceeded to write a program that writes code for me, based on a export of all the cards.
There are few things I have experienced in my life that compares to the satisfaction of seeing my own program produce many thousands of lines of code in a few seconds.2 -
Why the fuck is debit cards that don't need a PIN for transactions even a thing? What is so difficult to understand or implement in a two factor authentication? Like do these companies have meetings where some fucktard proposes removing a crucial security feature and the others just nod approval?6

I used to be a big security guy, not allowing stuff like most of the social media, not bringing my phone anywhere, carrying a RPi tablet for privacy reasons. Very Stallman stuff.
Recently I noticed that I don't care so much.. I see these things as opportunities, for instance Microsoft products could be benefitial for job opportunities, I have some workout sessions on my phone.
I could restrict myself... but is it worth it just to decline some capitalist/politician's row in a dataset for analysis?
But then again I feel as a society I think we should either do this or request this data to be distributed to us as well.
Should you be playing a game of cards, when the enemy can see your hand? What do u think?4 -

I'm making an interface where I have a few columns, much like Trello. In each column there are cards. I want the user to be able to drag these cards an place them in any column, in any order they want. The problem is that at the same time they should be able to sort each column on date or whatever. Do you guys have any ideas on how to deal with the clash between custom sorting and auto sorting? Like what happens when you're in date sorting, and you change the order of the cards?
The implementation/programming is no problem. I just need help to figure out the interaction logic behind it.
Thanks... :)5 -

WCF doesn't like me adding to lists...
I have to make an uno game that supports multiplayer with WCF for school...
I have a player class that has a list of card classes.
I have a function called dealHand, it adds Cards to the hand list...
I also have a callback function for updating my wpf gui...
For whatever reason if when the gui calls dealhand and I try to use myList.add(new Card()) then the updategui function in my wpf client doesn't fire...
But if I take a seperate method called makeHand which returns a list of cards, and just do myList = makeHand() then that works fine...
Never been so baffled/cursed so much at code before... Is there something about Lists that WCF doesn't like? Seriously... was weird...
Hopefully that was somewhat coherent...4 -

Imagine being so rich that you're too lazy to implement payment methods for countries where you product is popular. Microsoft (one drive) and Android (play) was like that for years. I want to pay for openai but it doesn't support ideal/paypal which is the payment method in the Netherlands. Credit card only. Credit cards is so unsafe, I don't understand it's the standard. I won't get one. Is there an api for generating content besides openai?6

Working on a poker card simulator. Currently benchmarking the hands by giving them a rating (high card value, pair).
In the simulation there are three players. The first player who get the hand cards first seems to have advantage. Does this make sense?55 -
I'm not sure if I'd say I'm "deeply inspired" but I spent more time coding a personal project this week than I've spent on any other project in a similar timeframe for the past several years. All because I wanted to build a personal dashboard/startpage that queries the APIs of a couple of MMOs I play and displays it nicely on a grid of cards.
I wrote my own API wrapper, built a Flask site for the first time in years, tried out a few things I've never done before, and stuffed the whole thing in a docker container.
I'm no web developer (my job is more about the infrastructure than the web apps which run on it) so I'm learning a lot just through trial and error and it's actually kind of fun. -
[off topic] (good thing this isn't stack overflow)
2.5 years ago I moved 35 minutes north of all my friends for a job and only see them about once a year now. I have a wife, kid and a few clients so spending time meeting new people has become a disability.
I have a bar near me that does board games and DnD n shit. I thought I would be able to pop in, make a few friends and play a few games of cards against humanity or something.
Nope. Even though I knew I was the coolest guy in the place (I'm a musician and up til a year ago played bass in rock/metal/90s bands ) , couldn't bring myself to talk to anyone or try to play any of the games. I sat at the bar on my phone, like a nerd.2 -

It's 2022 and people still believe USB sticks and external card readers are a replacement for memory card slots.
They're not. SD cards have a standardized form factor and do not protrude from memory card slots, but external card readers and USB sticks do.
Just like smartphones, laptops are increasingly ditching the SD card slot or replacing it with microSD, which has less capacity, lower life expectancy and data retention span due to smaller memory transistors, worse handling, and no write-protection switch.
Not only should full-sized SD cards be brought back to laptops, but also brought to smartphones. There might soon be 2 TB SD cards, meaning not one second of worrying about running out of space for years. That would be wonderful.22 -
One week ago Google overhauled their "Now News". The news have unnecessary categories over the title, can't be swiped away anymore and some cards are way bigger than others.
At least now its proven that this kind of news is advertised shit and no more independant.

OT !Rant
Faith in humanity restored (for now anyway)
I forgot my jacket containing everything I had with me (money, id, credit cards, etc) in a cafeteria this noon. Now, at 6pm I remembered and stormed over with vivid pictures about the hassle of replacing the cards, getting a new Id, and trying to survive on no money during that time, just to find it as I have left it. Nothing missing! People seem to be nice sometimes.
Well, it wouldn't have hurt anyone,if they'd put some money in it for starters.5 -
!long rant
Trying to work from home is always a pain, since we need to use company laptops (no ifs, ands or buts about it).
Yesterday I took the laptop in to check for updates that just wouldn't run while at home (my first mistake), and I couldn't get past the "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to login" screen, laptop keyboard didn't seem to be registering clicks, and an external keyboard wasn't either (and I forgot about the on-screen keyboard). A couple of restarts later with no further changes to the situation, the laptop then didn't get past the BIOS screen.
So I called support (my second mistake) and logged an incident.
Couple of hours later someone comes to my desk and asks about the issue, so I describe it, show them (by now the laptop was once again getting past BIOS screen), and leave them to it. Since these laptops are just used as preconfigured VPN and RDP gateways, I said it would be okay if he just wanted to reinstall the OS (my third mistake).
Several hours later, after staying late last night waiting for it to finish, I loaded my profile, installed updates, shut down, grabbed my stuff and left, without checking VPN or RDP over WiFi (my fourth mistake).
Turns out that some of the buttons on the keyboard just no longer work, but now USB keyboards do work, and I can just use OSK to login while out. I figured this would be my only issue with things, and that it was acceptable.
This morning I attempt to use the laptop, and forgot about OSK and the faulty delete button, so spent a few minutes on that. Try to connect to WiFi and find it can't connect, because of course, it doesn't remember the WiFi password, so I root around for the code in some drawer, enter it, and it works. VPN tries to connect and... get told to insert my smart card, which is already inserted, because the driver is wrong!
So I'm sitting here writing a post, not quite believing that I'm considering cancelling my plans for the day to go into the office because of a bloody driver issue now...1 -
Learning Java after learning python for School and helping the new programmers who are in the class I finished last term. I see python code and get nervous because there’s no semicolons or curly brackets, but then again I’m like “Fuck I miss python!”

Hi,
I want to install linux besides windows on my new computer (i7-8700k, gtx 1080). I use debian with i3 on my laptop for work and want to have a similar development environment at home. Does anyone have an adive to choose between ElementaryOS and Arch, or just stick with Debian. i3-gaps will be the wm, I just can't use another one ;)
Does one distro has better support for Nvidia cards in fact I would like to try CUDA.
I do not have other requirements; mostly webdev with python in the backend, and a little c++ game with SDL. This should not be a problem in a new distro.
Thanks for some advices and pro/cons11 -

Related to the project in my last rant...
Project got delayed for about a month in total because the API for the payment gateway wasn’t allowing charges against stored cards. Could save, modify, and delete them, but no charges.
After a week of trying to get things working based on the documentation, I get in touch with the vendor (great people) who file a support request with the people running the processor so we can see what’s up. Long story short, that amounted to 3 weeks of getting ignored until the vendor raised hell on my behalf, only to get the following reply back:
“You’ve been using the dev credentials, try it on live transactions instead!”
Thankfully, we’re able to move the customer to another processor under the same vendor, where I already have all the requests figured out...2 -
Raging...windows just put out an update which seems to have crippled the killer wireless on an Alienware laptop I'm using. Greeted with "Please wait" on login finally got pass that. No wireless cards detected. Had this been Linux I could pop into single user mode and debug it.
Windows 10 is getting really bad for this. So not factory reinstalling. Think even arch doesn't break this often lol5 -

Not strictly dev related...
I've been googling for minutes trying to find out the frigging sequential read speed for class 10 SD cards... I could only find the write speed and GAZILLIONS of SD ads.
It should be higher than write speed, right? I need this to give dd command the proper speed so I won't risk losing data (it's a backup) and I won't have to wait forever either. But I'm wasting more time looking up the frigging speed... I need dd cause it's a whole-disk backup (partition or file system seem damaged)
I can't rely on specs because I'm just not sure about the brand and model.

I watched a few reviews for the new nvidia RTX 4070 Ti graphics card. One question on my mind is: why is it so huge?
⏺️4090 is huge -> ok I get it, 450W power is a lot of W
⏺️4080 is huge -> ok I guess, 320 W of power is a still a lot of W; although it should be considerably smaller than 4090 (but it is not? why)
⏺️4070 Ti is huge -> 3 slots size for this graphics card? What the actual hell? This card is rated just 285 W. It makes no sense
I do not get it. The only explanation I can find is that the manufacturer got so lazy they cannot be bothered to design 3 different cooling systems, so they reuse the same cooling system on all graphics cards. RIP4 -

Hasn't technology become magic - and we ignorant sorcerer's apprentices who can perform a video call to the other side of the globe perhaps while we understand only some bytes of the thousands software snippets that were piled up by us code monkeys to perform the miracle? ...
This however has always been the state of software (for us developers): that this house of cards needs constant care by our hands to not collapse - in constant fear we may preserve the facades while the number of components that interact, the sheer mass of code only allow for guesswork and hotfixes accumulating the technical debt. Yes, we have all that terms for that. The problems are known since the 80s or 60s, so we might be relabeling it once in a while, but mainly it is just: complexity.. or entropy.2 -

I know I'm a bit late to bitch about this, but why would anyone in their right mind remove a UI/UX gesture that was loved and adored by millions and replace it with a far less intuitive gesture? I'm talking about Google's decision to fucking replace the Google Now swipe to dismiss cards gesture with a two stage tap and click to hide stories gesture! Why the fuck would you do that? The buttons are far too much of a precision action. And they are located at an area that is not natural for a single handed use. What this has effectively done is, force me to use my phone with two hands. And I fucking hate it! Can anyone here give me a valid reason for Google's design change? It's beginning to get on my nerves and my OCD compels me to hide all the cards until there is none left, so not minding it is not an option! Ughh!

How do I properly and cost effectively integrate payment systems into a website? What do I have to look out for? Which payment portals can you recommend? I have a general hatred towards PayPal, am willing to integrate it though, I want to be able to handle credit cards and as many other payment options as possible (I am based in Europe - Austria). I also want to support payments via Monero. I have experience building websites from front to backend and have handled credentials and stuff like that before in a professional environment but never integrated any payment systems so I'd appreciate links to resources, recommendations and tips for doing so in a safe and cost effective way. Now i got some thoughts going tho.. We both have/will have Ryzen 5 CPU and GTX 1060/70/80. Will there be any compatibility issues with some linux distros with that?
Iirc Nvidia cards had some minor issues on linux.

So I already posted about this a couple of months ago, but I'm still working on my little game, Lore Seeker.
https://apps.apple.com/jp/app/...
I added a bunch of stuff - cards are now divided into 4 factions, and I added a whole slew of different abilities. It's getting pretty close to what I envisioned when I started imo. I also ported it from iPhone to Mac Os X, so if you have a mac you can do me a huge favor by checking it out and giving me a rating! I don't think the mac os app store gets any traffic though.
I have no idea if anyone actually wants to play this thing even if I add a million levels/cards but I'm just continuing to work on it and improving it hoping someone will notice eventually.
The most common question I get seems to be "where's android", so I've been messing around with android studio trying to figure out the basics. I have a tiny platform layer of Swift code that doesn't do much, and most of my code is in C++. So I just need to learn how to embed C++ code and then duplicate a small platform layer. I thought I could just jump into that and 'wing it' but I'm starting to think I will have to actually do some studying to figure out how android works... seems pretty confusing so far.
Anyway, thanks for any comments / advice / disses! <3334 -

Lads. I need your help.
I'm building a little web app project in class where a user can create their own micro-personal page similar to about.me, except a little more modular.
users can add cards to their page with a title, maybe an image, some text, and some buttons.
my question is: how can I represent such things in my database? I can think of how a json file representation might look, but not sure how that translates to SQL?
here's how I imagine it:
userProfileComponents ={
cards=[
{
title: sometitle
image: src
text: null
button: { icon: facebook, text: facebook}
},
{
title: another title
image: null
text: some stuff about me
button: null
}
]
I wouldn't want to create a table for each micro-page - cause that would scale like absolute shit. but I feel like cramming EVERYONES components in a component table would be hell on earth. any tips? thanks22 -
URGENT:
How an online supplier charge their clients with huge amount >40k monthly in an automated way ? ?
Context:
i am building a huge b2b international online service that will require clients to pay between 1000 usd to 400'000 usd per month.
The system is build on top of an e-payment api (stripe) that enable the system to work based on regular fully automated credit card authorization and capture system.
Everything works fine in dev mode. But when we will move to production, the amounts are so huge that they exceed the max limit of any-credit card, even the corporate's ones.
So that makes me wonder, how automated services (aws, gcp etc) charge huge invoices for their clients in an automated way without using credit cards...

Okay, I may have heard wrong, but I thought Metal was a wrapper for vendor drivers of graphics cards. Like the vendors didn't rewrite their other platform drivers and did like an Opengl -> Metal wrapper instead. Or a Vulkan -> Metal wrapper. Now, out of curiosity I search for this, and I find that there are Metal -> Vulkan wrappers. So is it possible on MacOS to have a Vulkan -> Metal -> Vulkan setup now? Or even a Opengl -> Metal -> Vulkan? I know I have seen wrappers for Windows drivers so Linux can use them. But that was a while ago.4

"being gifted is a curse. You are f*cling crippled, you believed you were gifted, but you have been crippled the whole time."
I never could agree more to these words (healthyGamerGg, a youtube therapist specialized in people with issues related to videogames)
If you read my last rant you may in fact know i have a lot of issues with the implications of our jobs and truth be told, it all boils down to my iq.
Or better: to the fact i have a decent skill for abstracting stuff (iq is so freaking generic)... It can be a blessing while solving issues, but it feels awful when you realize that no matter the amount of money, you will still need something else to be happy the first day of work.
Sometimes I really wonder if I am an a-hole, stupid or if i think these 2 things to deny the fact my reasoning is correct.
On a side note table top games are very easy to enjoy: as soon as I sit at the table my brain goes: "the game is gonna be very boring if you play normally, at the best you are gonna learn a new strat, at the worst you are winning and it'll be just an ego jerk off... What if you play stuff you feel like to play and enjoy the ride and the conversation without planning to win?"
Except cards against humanity and yogi. Those two must be won!
(Yogi is a game where you play cards which give you restrictions e.g: "keep an index on the tip of the nose for the rest of the game" or "place this card on your head for the rest of the game" you lose as soon as you fail any of the cards you played or if you declare you can't draw)4 -
