Just had a fire drill at school. I yelled "GIT PUSH!! GIT PUSH!!".
I've always wanted to do that... :P13 -
"Sir, it compiles"
"Push"
"But Sir, what about debugging?"
"I said push"
"But shouldn't we..."
"PUSH THE GOD DAMN CODE"4 -
Hey everyone - I just wanted to update our Android users on the push notification crash that has been occurring.
The good news is the issue should be fixed in the update I just pushed out (should be available in the Google Play Store within a few hours). We apologize for the crashes and thank everyone for their patience.
I'm still looking in to what actually happened here. Our GCM library hasn't been updated in a while and all of a sudden a specific case started failing. I'll continue to look in to how that seemingly happened with no changes in the app. Some other users of the library started experiencing the same issue.26 -
Thank you dear mr. boss for fucking up our master branch by adding local changes to a 2 months outdated master branch (250 FUCKING COMMITS BEHIND), pull the remote and then just push without resolving any conflicts!!!1!!!
But thank you so much for sending me an email at 10pm asking me to resolve the conflicts.
It is 3 in the morning and it took 1 hour to get it clean.
Sometimes I want to break some necks...9 -
Wife: commit, and come to bed..
Me:
> git commit -m "wife wants me to go to bed"
> git push origin master -f16 -
So I've been screaming for months that push notifications are not reliable enough to build critical functionality on top of. Management won't listen and keep pushing ahead with making teams use it because its cheap and easy.
Been debugging an issue on/off for several weeks. Turns out someone in management asked the backend team to cut the expiration time of items down to 5 minutes to increase throughput (without telling mobile). Notifications are regularly taking +4 mins to get to the phones, leaving our users with barely any time to react. They are now complaining.
I swear if there is a single IQ point available between the whole team i've yet to see any evidence of it8 -
That moment when you sit down at your PC and realize you forgot to push your latest commit from your laptop.3
-
Actual pro tip: don't push only when you are done with code. Always push when you are done with coding session. Minimize the possibility of data loss and always have your code on the server.8
-
Went into bed with peace in mind. Updated my website and everything working perfectly. Tonight I'll have a good sleep.
Jumped from bed all of a sudden :
GIT COMMIT! GIT PUSH!1 -
- Hey it's lunch time!
- Yeah let me push these changes...
- No! You'll do it later.
- But, it will take 2 minutes!
- NO! WE'RE HAVING LUNCH NOW.

Dev: To send push notifications, please open a ticket to get access to the new tool we are using which is dedicated to managing push notifications and push notification campaigns.
Me: ok done.
*5 days later*
Tool owner: Can you please add to the ticket the reason you need access?
Me: “To use it”2 -
> git commit -m 'fixing what I broke earlier'
> git pish
> git: 'pish' is not a git command. See 'git --help'.
Did you mean this?
push
> you know I meant push, why can't you leave me alone and just do it13 -
Don't ever ever forget to push before leaving office.
I repeat : Don't ever ever forget to push!
Sends app to client.
At home and decides to check if the changes actually worked just to realize it crashes because i forgot to comment out my dummy test data.

So I was playing Formula 1 game and I heard “push, push, push” from the engineer while leaving pit-lane.
I immediately closed game and started “git push”3 -
My friend and I were watching a documentary about Salmon. He suddenly starts to giggle and I ask him whats up.
Friend: Why do salmon suck at version control?
Me: why?
F: because they always git push force upstream 😂😂😂 -
Night before flying internationally includes the following checklist:
- check VPN works, can access frontend sites and hit the backend
- git push4 -
Get assigned ticket.
Finish the most of the feature. Finish most of the specs.
Push.
Second dev wants to own accounting half of the ticket.
Rip out half my changes, rewrite specs.
Push.
Code review asks for minor changes.
Finish them.
Push.
Product creep creeps the scope.
Finish the feature again.
Push.
Product creep creep-creeps the scope.
Finish the feature again.
Push.
New release happens.
Merge in master; fix conflicts. Run specs; random unrelated specs fail, some fail intermittently. Rabbit holes of complicated, unexplored, obviously-flawed code.
Fuck that. Push.7 -
$ git push
> current branch is behind
$ git push -f
... 5mins later coworker is asking why his commits have disappeared.6 -
Generally I repeat to my team: "if you touch master I'll cut you f*cking hands off!". Even when I have master push policies.
Should I be extremist about master?16 -
I closed the lid of my laptop and went for a lunch. When I came back the damn machine wouldn't start and I realised I didn't push anything to github today so wish me luck recovering data from the drive.
(At least lunch was good.)6 -
Developer confession.
I always git push a new branch even though I know it will error as there's no upstream, just to copy the full git push with set upstream arguments from the error message.11 -
Hey boss, I see you are on a rampage with those trello cards, they all flying to the done list... How about you push to gitlab at least once a week too?
You gonna have to deal with the conflicts alone you dumb fuck :)1 -
Embarrassing moment:
Needed to deliver apk urgent urgently for push notification testing. I was unable to receive push token. Code is right in every way. Couldn't figured out in 15min. Lead comes to my seat and asks what's issue. And hey suddenly I figured it out. It was my wifi closed.. Bullshit 😬😠4 -
Don't forget to git push before reinstalling Windows :)
TL;DR: Fuck.
Longer fuck:
I only did git commit and forgot to push changes. And the rest is pretty obvious.3 -
Remember kids, clear out any login credentials before doing git commit and git push!
/smacks himself6 -
Recently someone from QA came to me yelling "Why did you push to master? You have a feature branch for these changes..."
I replied "Indeed. Coincidently it's called 'master' "2 -

So I set up push notifications from my Raspberry Pi to my Android phone, to know when exim sent a mail locally.
The easy part was the actual push notifications.
The more tedious part turned out to be looking for a way to send a notification for each mail.
After some research, Procmail seemed to be the only fitting tool to pass info to a command (in order to give the push notification some content so I know what's up)
In the middle of everything, I managed to fuck up exim system-wide, so mails didn't work, which was fucking great of course...
The magic receipt is this:
:0 c
| ${NOTIFY} -t "Pi mail: $SUBJECT"
Anyway, this is the result (using a test mail by mdadm + an actual degraded array I am still waiting on replacement drives for):2 -
In case of emergency:
1. git commit
2. git push
3. Leave building
> Failed to push some refs. To prevent you from losing history, non-fast-forward updates were rejected. Merge remote changes before pushing again.
🤦2 -
I really don't understand how developers from Facebook, WhatsApp and other messaging platforms still didn't figure out that ever since they introduced message previews on push notifications that those "seen" check-marks became utterly useless in most of cases..
This COVID-19 quarantine just confirms it, since nobody is doing anything else except being on phones and computers whole day but somehow it still takes them several hours to "read" the message..9 -
Just remembered that I forgot to push all day's work..
Now my scumbag brain is going to keep me awake all night thinking about all the shit that can go wrong...
Great1 -

Http/2 server push is really cool. Like, really fucking cool. Those researchers at google really got this right. I hate how they handle their users but I have to say they really make good use of the money they get by selling us for kettle.2

Dear Apple,
You suck at push notifications. Please allow Google to do its good job (Firebase) without going through your servers.
Fuckingly pissed,
A programmer -
So where I work, we used to push our code from test servers to production every tuesday/thursday exactly at one in the afternoon. Every time there was a push, I would play "push it to the limit" blasting over my speakers. Now we have an automated push and I never really listen to that song anymore. I miss those days. Short angry rant
What the fuck is wrong with the SalesForce Authenticator logic?! How in the hell do you fuck up a simple 2FA system this hard?!!
Login -> Waiting for Notification... nothing... -> Reload Page -> Login -> Waiting for Notification... nothing -> Click "Use Code instead"... nothing happens... -> Reload Page -> "Login -> don't even wait for notification and just pres "Use Code instead"... nothing -> Reload Page -> Notice there's a "Use Code" button on this page as well -> Finally be able to log into the fucking Aloha piece of shit...
How TF is it, that Duo is able to send me a push notification within 1 second and it ALWAYS works... and THIS FUCKING SHIT NEVER FUCKING WORKS THE FIRST TIME AND AT WORST JUST DOESN'T WORK AT ALL!!!!!
Fucking hell.... Don't offer me a push notification service if you don't know how to make one... jesus fucking christ... All of Salesforce security is fucking stupid, but at least the others mostly work, but this retarded piece of crap is making me actively surprised when it works on first try... Maybe it's because I'm on a slow connection, but again Duo Mobile doesn't have this problem and works *instantly*... so what sort of retarded monkey coded the SF one I don't know, but I hope they are making better products now, because this is a disgrace to programming and security6 -
Achievement of the day: breaking GitHub doing a forced push.
(Apparently I was able to create a kind of ghost commit that randomly appeared and disappeared from a pull request, plus other random errors 🤪)3 -
I'm so happy that I have the first working version of the program. Just couple of bug fixing and unit testing and I'll push the code to production.
Day 1: Just couple of bug fixing and unit testing and I'll push the code to production.
Day 2: Just couple of bug fixing and unit testing and I'll push the code to production.
.........
Day 200: Just couple of bug fixing and unit testing and I'll push the code to production.

Woke up 4am today to push my first iOS app. Took me three phucking hrs to realise apple is down! Their FUCKING dev stats website says all is green! Fuck u xcode1

Thief: Quick! Hand me your wallet and backpack
Dev: *hands over the empty wallet, takes laptop from bag, pulls from remote, pushes all the commits to remote, deletes local repo, puts laptop in bag, hands over the bag* Here you go mister *sighs* -
Fuck, wanted a year long streak on github but failed at 40 days.
I did code but just had no part finished so didn't commit.
I even have an alarm for committing ffs. I just snoozed it and was like I do it when I finished x. Forgot track of time like always with coding and found out four hours later.
Fuck. Back to one. I just start over, it shouldn't be that hard.
I should change my commit behavior to push if compiles instead of push after complete feature. So, I change the definition of achievement easier to achieve6 -
So, I turned on my old phone to transfer all my p̶o̶r̶n̶ photos, and it crashed from the notifications.
And I understand that it's an underpowered device and notifications aren't expected to come by the hundreds, but how terribly misdesigned must a pubsub system like Push be for the client to crash? -
I've got a kinda basic networking question I can't quite figure out
How does a push notification work?
Like, on an Android app. A good example is an authenticator. Say I don't login to the service for 4 months.
Then, one day, I try to log into the web portal and it prompts me to accept the request on my authenticator app on my phone.
Immediately, there's a push notification on my phone.
Wtf.
Is there a socket open for 4 months? Does it send requests every few seconds for 4 months? I can't imagine that either of these options scale whatsoever: both horrendously waste bandwidth and server connections.
How the fuck does it work? I don't even have the first idea.7 -
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it extremely satisfying completing a successful git push -u origin master?
-
[Question]
If there is an fire, smoke starts to fill the room quickly, and you are working on your code, will you "git commit / git push"?3 -
TGIF & remember..
DO NO FUCKING PUSH TO PRODUCTION TODAY!
DO NOT FUCKING RELEASE A NEW VERSION OF THE CLIENT APP!
FUCK!!
have a nice weekend partners 🤗1 -
@dfox Wouldn't it be better if there were limited amount of push notifications if user haven't seen the previous ones yet? I commented on some popular rant and when I got to a stable connection, the phone vibrated like crazy for at least 15s :D It was awesome btw.1
-
Why do some developers rebase or resolve merge conflicts when you can just email each other changes and force push?4
-
Main branch running locally - fine
Main branch locally connected to QA dB - fine
Main branch on QA server with QA dB - NOPE
OK - build main locally, push to QA server - fine
WTF.jpg
Main build by build server, push to QA - nope
Rebuild QA vm and dB - build main, push to QA - nope
Turn on full server logging - PASS.

I had a great dream last night of finally finishing a project I've been working on for too long and pushing to prod. I awoke to find magic doesn't exist and I still have to complete it. Saddest morning in a while.

$git commit -m "fix fucking bug again"
$git push
fatal: Right now you can only push 1 commit every 2 rants (every 1 rant for gitRant++ members) because we want to make sure everyone's commit are pushed in a relaxed state of mind! 2 rants to go until you can push another commit.7 -
Not sure what's better on Friday:
Fix the bugs and push it to prod so manager will be happy.
Or sit there like a dumb fuck and wait for Monday before touching the code2 -
This is git.
You code whatever, add the files, commit and push.
Just keep doing at repeatedly.
Until your push is rejected, in which case you delete the local folder and re-clone the whole thing.
#howOneLearnsGit -
I can't stop myself from making my commit messages completely sarcastic or off the wall, which never makes sense to future me.

Glad to be back to some IRC servers that managed to not die off and ZNC bouncer got so much neat default and external plugins now, for example you can get push notifs if you want: https://github.com/jreese/znc-push1

I was discussing something about git today with a colleague and then it hit me. Git push --force is like rape. You don't want to push? I'll force you to😂

I casually solved a problem in some private code at work today that I didn't manage to fix the previous two evenings.
Then I forget to push the changes and remembered at home that I turned off my work computer which normally I never turn off so that I could TeamViewer into it (I don't have VPN
access).
Wanted to work on that code this weekend 😒
(Well, we were in a "progession session" meeting right before leaving the office so I kind of forgot about it because of that) -
She: Hello, I am ABC from XYZ. We saw your profile and interested to discuss an intern opportunity with you.
Me: Yes please.
She: So can you tell me about your current projects or work.
Me: Deep learning and blah blah. I am interested to work in cryptography or deep learning based work this summer.
[15-18 Mins Discussion on project]
She: Sorry but we are looking for Web Developer for our website to work on jQuery.
Me: oh! It's okay. [ fuck 😐]1 -
So we 3 devs working on a real estate system.... The guy who initially wrote the system wrote it in a fucked up state
Project structure was shit so we had a meeting and I suggested we restructure the project and also have some minimal documentation coz the system is growing we adding more features before current ones are finished
We agreed and started polishing up the system coz it seemed more features we wanted were now becoming more and more difficult to implement
So the other guy tells me to pull some updates.... To my surprise he had started documenting the system without restructuring first.... Had to quickly restructure the thing and push updates
How can 1 start documenting the very same design we want to abandon 🤦 -
Does anyone use pushover.net or know a reliable / cheap push notification app with an api behind It?
Im trying to setup some monitoring alerts back to my phone, using slack / teams etc for personal projects seems pointless.
Emails are currently being sent but this relies on me actually looking at them and I tend to miss a few important ones. 😂
Not to worried about daily / monthly limits, it's going to be < 20 notifs a day kind of thing on a terribly bad day.6 -

I spent all day at work writing new features and even fixing a few bugs on our ticketing system. I just pulled out the computer at home to continue working and realized I never pushed any of the code. 6 hours of work sitting in limbo all weekend now. I wanted to finish testing that code before starting on the next feature.
Do I start the next features and finish debugging everything on Monday or do I take the weekend off? -
So umm.. the "Update on new rants" notif is turned off in the settings, but i'm still getting the push notifications. Does this happen to anyone else? Is this worth opening an issue on gh?
-
tried fixing push notifications in an app I'm working on, only to find out at the end of the day that Apple's sandbox was down all day..
What a waste of my day -
If I login to some account, log out, and then log in through some other account, I still get push notifications for logged out account.
It doesn't unregister device for push notifications, you need to uninstall to get rid of it.7 -
Question: which is better approach?
1. Use push notifications to tell react website that new data is available
OR
2. Use SignalR (similar to socket.io) and push data in real time?
The down side of SignalR is server needs to map connections --> use more memory while push notifications doesn't require that12 -
Any native app devs know if this is possible, before I go away and start messing about with shit.
I want to build a companion native app to my web app for the sole purpose of receiving in app push notifications.
So you set all the shit up on the web app and then the native app is just to get push messages. I currently send sms messages with the Twilio API but would rather the app solution.1 -
Developing a News app in android and kinda struck at the point where a new news is added to the server and then to be notified to all users.. I mean I want to know how to correctly implement push notifications and will I need an XMPP server for that ? If so ,then which one do all you experienced devs suggest..?
Thanks.. #awesomeCommunity5 -
Why am I no longer getting push notifications from Devrant? I really miss those.
Having to open the app to check for notifications is not as rewarding.
And yes, I have them enabled in the settings 🙁5 -
# bug
There seem to be some push notification weirdness with my device.
push notifications are shown like couple of hours after I've seen them in Notifs. up to like 6-7 hours.
anybody else?3 -
I just picked up a hobby project which I hadn't worked on in a while and started doing some major refactoring. However, I forgot to pull before I started and didn't realize that I made some updates on a different pc. Then as I wanted to push a ton of changes I noticed... I didn't even attempt to merge because it was one giant pile of shit conflicts - and I didn't remember what changes I had made earlier. So I decided to say fuck it and
$ git force --push
Feels *so* much better than pulling my hair out over conflicts :P2 -
Desktop PUSH Notification requests are fucking stupid! I get that you’re all edgy and shit and made your stupid site into a PWA or are just trying to spam me with this amazing new access you’ve been granted over the last few years.... But fucking stop it.
If you have a PWA and a user is viewing you on desktop clearrrllyyyy they’re not mobile and your request is pointless. Log the access as 1 of the 3 they need before being allowed to install it as an icon and ONLY on mobile request push as part of the install. Maybe just maybe it’s ok if they’re mobile browsing...
Use your fucking heads people. Just because you can use something doesn’t mean you should. -
Smart Phones are getting smarter. Now you get push notification when you want to check time.
and this featured is called "shove it to throat" -
Recently, Apple rolled out Push Notifications for PWA websites as a beta feature on iOS 16.4 devices. And let me tell you, it's a game-changer! But, when a client asked me to implement push notifications for their iOS users via web and service worker, I knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park.
Why, you ask? Well, their backend code base was written in Plain F*cking Vanilla PHP, which felt like I had time-traveled back to the 1980s! Plus, since the ios web push feature is still in its early stages, there were hardly any resources to guide me through the process of sending push notifications to Apple WebPush API using plain php.
Despite the obstacles, I managed to successfully send notifications to Mozilla and Google Chrome users. But Safari? Not so much. The client needed the task done within 24 hours, but due to delays, it ended up taking me three days to figure out the kinks. In the end, I had to refund the client, but I'm not one to give up easily.
In fact, I've created a public GitHub repo for a Quotes App in Flutter (https://github.com/GiddyNaya/...) that can send PN to iOS users via web. I'm diving down the rabbit hole to figure out how to make it work seamlessly, and I won't stop until I've cracked the code. Wish me luck!15 -
Anyone here that randomly received a chrome push notification from some random website (I don't even know the website)?
I know I can block the website but I didn't allow it in the first place.2 -
Pushed some code last night. Can't remember exactly how I wrote my changelog. I think it was coherent? Checked DevRant first.
-
Auto-healing deployments are great until your deployment fails because it can't handle sending a large number of push notifications (triggered by a message on a pub/sub topic that starts being read from on startup)...so restarts, tries to send them again, fails, restarts, etc...and meanwhile a few tens of thousands of users are getting spammed by notifications 😱5
-
I recently completed Naruto and decided to do something. I made a python script that plays, "Almighty Push!" whenever a push is initiated to repo and saved the script into my colleague PC(Big Naruto Fan). Imagine the look on his face and guess who has maximum push this week ;)1

Help needed.
My Internet service provider shut GitHub and now it's inaccessible. I can see all Repo's and clone them via VPN but can't push data. Any help regarding how to push data through a VPN or other way would be really helpful.
Thanks.8 -
Would it be possible to use (S)FTP protocol in conjunction with push technology rather than pull? Perhaps websockets since both use TCP?
Say, something like an external server periodically sending my server files and when a new file arrives, I will get a notification. This instead of constantly polling my directory to check if there are files in it.
I think I can see this done with an Angular page that gives me a notification when a new file arrives on my FTP.
I think it might turn into an interesting little hobby project..4 -
How can you know my mood? Check my git commands. Am I using `git push -u origin SQUAD-feature-branch --force-with-lease` or `git push -f`?4
-
How do you protect your team's git remotes?
We tend to protect the master and stage branch from force pushing and only allow merging pull requests after successfull recent tests and successfull review by someone with proper permissions. Depending on the project the Dev branch is only protected from force pushing though. All other branches are free to handle however wanted.
We recently had someone do a "git push -f --mirror" without understanding the command. Quick reminder what that does: it mirrors all your local branches to the remote so that the remote will be a mirror of your local repo. Branches that exist on remote but not on your machine will be removed from the remote.
A then needed to work from B's feature branch but of course that was gone... So while the idiot didn't fuck up our protected branches he still fucked over other people's workflow with that.
Is there an alternative to outright blocking force pushes which could have prevented that (except force pushing intelligence into his brain)?7 -
Contributing to big repositories on git be like,
and here goes my push,
Wait, I need to rebase
Ok, done, now push
Oh fuck, I need to rebase again.
The cycle goes on 😓 -
VPN -> SSH -> git clone -> git branch -> sshfs pull -> edit-> restart VPN/SSH every hour or so when it goes down -> sshfs push -> git commit -> git push -> fml

Good morning guys. I am developing a vue project and want to implement push notifications.
The problem: I have never had programmed push notifications before.
What is your favorite device for this and why? -
