Boss decided to limit Wi-Fi access only to company computers.
Ended up blocking everyone, including himself.10 -
A little summarised story for ya:
>Makes a rant
>Gets over 200 rants and rising
>Steady rise of increments over weeks
>Gets to 283 increments (hope of getting to 300 for a stressball)
>Updates app
>Literal update log:
"Stressball limit is now 500"

5 reasons I love devRant
1. I can't understand the point of Facebook. And it has such a shitty UI, but devRant has a beautiful despite it is complete JS
2. It doesnt have 140 char limit.
3. It is 99% english.
4. Trolls and script kiddies are rare here.
5. It is fairly lightweight.
======================
1 reason I hate devRant
1. Total waste of time.16 -
Useless Google Shortener API.
It allows 1M requests per day.
But has a max rate limit of 1 request/second. There are 86400 seconds in a day. Why are you giving a 1M requests limit then?5 -
Interviewer: Alright, so tell me what you like about software, but you don't have to limit it to software you can talk about hardware too. But yes what do you like about software?
Me:6 -
Coworker: hey man, do you know what is the limit for z-index on CSS?
Me: not sure but I think it is the signed int limit.
Coworker: the waaat?

So I found myself explaining to my rubber duck all the things I've done wrong in my past relationships...
What? It's a great guy, I shouldn't limit it just to code issues, I have a life it could fix too4 -
User Ip Address is too long (maximum is 30 characters).
Okay, dear third-party API, I guess users with IPv6 don't deserve the service... And wtf is 30-char limit for an IP address, when IPv4 can be only 15 characters long, and IPv6 can be up to 39 characters? Did you calculate a weighted average of IP length to get that number?11 -
Forgot FAT32 had a file count limit.
Turns out Linux won't stop you from writing too many files to a FAT32 drive.
Turns out this makes FAT32 do *really weird shit.*38 -
09:00 : 8 hours of sleep is perfect. I'll sleep at 10.
10:00 : Ah, I am still young, I don't that much sleep yet. 7 hours should do.
11:00 : 6 hour is the limit. I must sleep at least 6 hours to work properly tomorrow.
12:00 : Aw, fuck this :(
Next day at work: 10 cups of coffee2 -
@dfox Feature request
Could we have fully displayed rants ? Maybe as a setting disabled by default ?
I mean sometimes i'd like to relax and just mindlessly scroll, and having to tap to read longer rant and then tap back is, well, too much.
Especially when the rant ia only like 2 words above limit.16 -
https://fuckoff.services.
Wrote it because fuck it why not. Was sick at home and wanted to build something :)
Feedback would be great!
About the short character limit, I might up it a little but this thing is about writing short messages and not stories so that's a choice on purpose.43 -
Public sector. Guy wants to upload a PDF file into our system that exceeds our file size upload limit by a factor of more than 10. The PDF contains a lot of pictures.
His idea: print the hundreds of pages of the PDF on paper in b/w and scan it because b/w takes less space then colored pictures.
I am perplexed. He asked first though, so we could prevent the actual printing.6 -
Some data get lost during copy. The limit of clipboard exceeded so that's why pasted data is smaller :D1

Just casually scrolling through DevRant, SMS arrives. Mobile data limit reached.

My dad said to me once: "Son, when you're older... you can become anything you want. The sky is the limit!"
So my response: "Really dad? Wow!! I want to become an astronaut!!"
My dad: "God damnit son... why don't you ever listen?! I said the SKY is the limit!!"
So now I am a very down to earth programmer.4 -
This is one of the most unexpected, silly and ridiculous behaviors of MySQL: it doesn't support LIMIT in sub-queries, however it perfectly supports it in sub-sub-queries. WTF.10

Dear lord spaghettimonster,
pls not another SomethingJS.io for the world!
There should be a limit on how many JS frameworks are allowed to exist at any time!20 -
"Hmm, I wonder if Cloudflare has a limit to the amount of data I can store in the CDN"

Game Development,
Because it merges together so many interesting fields so well. It has a ton of physics, a lot of art and design, psychology, philosophy, storytelling, music ...
And it really gives you the possibility to make anything work to your rules. The only limit there is is the limits of logic and your hardware.7 -
Worst error message management.
Can't you just display the valid pattern for an username instead of showing different error message everytime.
If plain ASCII and only letters and numbers same for them, just show only letters and numbers, and
what's that hourly limit.
I just couldn't sign up after wasting time thinking of an username.6 -
I have bank accounts with 5 different banks.
I HAVE TO use 4-5 different government websites.
Every fucking place: you cannot use these "~-/;^"(some others too) symbols in your password.
Are you freaking fucking kidding me!! And all of them have a limit of 12or15 characters.
If this wasn't mind numbingly stupid enough, they fucking go ahead and force you to change password every fucking month or two.
THIS IS NOT SECURITY. YOU SHOULDN'T FORCE SOMEONE TO LIMIT THERE PASSWORDS TO:
- CERTAIN CHARACTERS
- A 15 CHARACTER SIZE LIMIT
- THRN OVERTHAT, FORCE TO CHANGE PASSWPRDS PERIODICALLY.
ALL THE 5 MAJOR FUCKING BANKS IN INDIA.
FUUUUUCCCCKKKKK YOUU 🖕11 -
Let's have a real debate.

Not Vim vs Emacs.
Not ASP.NET vs Spring Frameworks.
NO.
CHARACTER LIMIT. 80, 100, or 120+ and WHY.26 -
All respect to android (love the system (no, that doesn't mean that I love google)) and also to awesome custom roms (hell even some vendors make quite good ones imo!).
BUT WHO THE FUCKING HELL THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF ALARMS YOU CAN HAVE TO 15 OR EVEN LIMIT IT AT ALL?!?
I HAVE TO GET UP AT 3:30 FOR WORK EACH NIGHT AND THIS IS *NOT* HELPING.
THE PERSON WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA CAN TAKE A PHONE, OPEN THAT DEFAULT CLOCK APP AND SHOVE IT UP HIS FUCKING ASS.24 -
Interviewer: Time limit for this exercise was an hour and you took 2 hours so you fail. Best of luck next time
Dev: Look I really don’t think your assessment has a very fair time limit. The only way you could do this in an hour is by knowing what the problem was beforehand and having all these niche utilities written ahead of time.
Interview: Oh yeah we had one guy that did that, he did the entire thing in only 45 minutes! We hired him immediately!
Dev: …5 -

STUPID RAILS!
WHY CAN'T YOU JUST BUILD THE BLOODY QUERY WITHOUT DOING FANCY UNNECESSARY SUBQUERY SHIT?!

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY

When migrating from MySQL server to MariaDB and having a query start returning a completely different result set then what was expected purely because MariaDB corrected a bug with sub selects being sorted.
It took several days to identify all that was needed on that sub select was “limit 1” to get that thing to return the correct data, felt like an idiot for only having to do 7 character commit 😆4 -
Sad story:
User : Hey , this interface seems quite nice
Me : Yeah, well I’m still working on it ; I still haven’t managed to workaround the data limit of the views so for the time limit I’ve set it to a couple of days
Few moments later
User : Why does it give me that it can’t connect to the data?
Me : what did you do ?
User : I tried viewing the last year of entries and compare it with this one
Few comas later
100476 errors generated
False cert authorization

Is zooming into images on devrant fucked for anybody else? (since the latest update only) I have to doubletap to zoom in and also then "limit" effects happen when I try to move around, as if the image ends into every direction where I zoomed in.7

We have an API available for our customers to integrate our software with their Webshop.
A client and their developer complained because not all of the products came through. I checked the products, the validation, the parameters, the database .. everything looked fine and I was scratching my head why these articles wouldn't come through (but it did work at my end).
After some time, I checked the request logs..
Apparently it wasn't quite clear for them that a loop is required with the 'skip' and 'take' parameters to create an offset for pagination. They only synchronised the first 500 products.. everytime..
We have a limit of 500 products per batch (take) for performance reasons.
They asked if we could increase this limit, because they have "a large range of products" (not really, only 800 or so and we have clients with more than 2mil. products..) Oh pls.. I've sent them a link to the PHP manual for a basic 'while' loop..2 -
Customer: can you set my forgotten password to "1"?
Me: there's a six signs limit in your domain. You have to use upper case letters, lower case letters and at least one symbol
Customer: "123Aa+"?
We have to set such passwords to avoid customers cancelling contracts.... -
Just thought of a cool feature for devRant: rant it later!
I get why the 2 hours limit between rants exists, but it would be so cool to write a rant and the app to self post it after the 2 hours limit expires!
And it could also give a notification that the rant was posted.
What do you think?8 -
The day I discovered I have a limit to the amount of crap and abuse I can take. The following day I handed in my notice at a place I had worked for 7 years. That was 3.5 years ago, have been happily freelancing ever since.1
-
Bless the service APIs that don't charge you for failed requests, that fucking on-site team almost cost my client 7k$, just because of a typo and an endless loop, that they pushed to production, while bypassing the rate and resource limit I set in place, because it "wasn't working" - it was working, you fucking cunts, it was preventing your system running wild for a reason.

A jr colleague came back from a react.js code camp.
Those hipsters turned the poor kid into a one liner terrorist and buzzword spammer.
It's time to play bad cop and start enforcing line length limit. -
Another case of "devs too stupid to poop" TM.
We had a funny discussion today.
Topic came up that a project using Lucene was incredibly slow.
Then came the yadda yadda of Java bad, Java sucks, Java bla Java blub in the gossip mill.
Both things irritated me, last thing was just the usual "I want to use new stuff cause I wanna be a cool jackass" trouble.
So. Today meeting. We did quick analysis by pair programming.
If I tell you that a whole team managed to review an PR, give it green light...
Despite the PR using the thread safe Lucene IndexWriter in a non-parallel fashion for large bulk inserts?
The whole problem screamed parallelization.
Yeah. If you ignore that scream and implement it in a sequential fashion, it is slow.
Congrats Jimmy, your retard level is off the charts. -
Yay!
(This text is needed, because my message needs to be between the 6 and 5000 characters long. In other words, "Yay!" is not long enough. So I'm typing a shitload of text to be sure I have enough characters in my message. Now I will stop typing, because I dont want to reach the 5000 character limit.)11 -
Me: I’m gonna make it so the users can access the locations for 30days.
Boss: wtf? U dumb? Do you know how valuable that data is, dont fucking put a limit
Me: *listening 10minutes of him ranting how that’s the stupidest idea he’s heard all day*
Boss:why would you want to do that anyways like wtf?
Me: storage optimization
Boss: 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 wtf r u like a idiot or smthng.
My head: nah I’m done, I’m about to roast this guy with my numbers*
Me: every single minute 40k rows of data come in from just ONE☝️ CLIENT.....AND THATS HOW, EVEN IF WE ADD THAT FUCKING 2 YEAR LIMIT WE WOULD BE HOSTING 5 FUCKING PETABYTES OF DATA FOR JUST ONE CLIENT, not including other shits, this is only for heatmaps. And imagine changing all of that database system in the future, that would require going threw so much databases and pages, this ain’t just like changing one number and bam less storage space.
Boss: Ok, add that 2 year limit, later we will sort this out.
My brain: *omg, now that I know these numbers how will I ever fall asleep😦*9 -
Coding competitions.
Expectations: a period of intense coding, satisfaction from solving problems, finding neat solutions.
Reality: five FUCKING HOURS spent staring at the screen doing literally nothing, because none of your ideas would fit the time limit and you have NOT A SINGLE FUCKING CLUE WHERE TO EVEN START.

Implementing Slack in the company really helped improve general communication between the two offices.. That was until we were told not to use it because there's a 10,000 message history limit on the free version and 'important documentation' was being lost... FML5

1. Remove chairs and tables.
2. Limit everyone to two minutes speech time.
3. When everybody got used to stand-up meetings, get down and plank.
Everybody will have a very strong interest in a quick and productive end to any plank-down meeting. 😁4 -
Coming from Splunk to Sumo Logic, so far I haven't found anything I like about Sumo Logic. It's slow and constantly tries to limit you. Splunk is expensive but I can see why now.

> "Just use power saving mode, bro! It will extend the life of your non-replaceable battery!"
Of course I bought a smartphone with powerful processors just to limit their performance for the sake of delaying the expiry of its non-replaceable battery.10 -
Hey so found another tiny bug, well more like a typo, if you're a subscriber and you go to edit a post more than it's time limit in this after 57 mins you get the old can't edit after 5 minutes alert dialog message, super easy to fix (I guess lol) and not too important12

We just had a big drama because our team leader discovered 2 of our projects use 79 character line limit. He changed it to 80 and reformatted all the code.
What is wrong with this world?9 -
Fuck you for imposing the upper limit on password length for my online banking! Why do you even care about my pass - don't you fucking hash it beforehand?!3

I’ve only just been able to catch up with the UK news and the government missed ~16,000 cases of COVID-19 over a 7 day period due to a “technical glitch”.
The “technical glitch” was the government using an excel spreadsheet that reached the data limit.
Who the fuck thought that was a good idea long term, that’s why databases exist!!!!9 -
made a Facebook app once that allowed users to submit their stories for a competition to win a tablet. The HTML form had no limit on length but ORM defaulted to 1000 characters in database, imagine the sourprise when we exported the data for the client at the end...1

Websites that still for w/e reason limit the number of characters a password can have...
Seriously, when a website starts bitching about me entering a 32-character password generated by my password manager "being too long", I seriously start to wonder how they store the password...9 -
First off, what do you mean by ´people like me´?
Do I look like an outer-space creature to you when you look at my profile? Or are you looking for a do-not-feed sign at the side of my wooden fence?
What even, .. I'm human, like you, you moron with a missing 'sapien'.
It's kinda ironic, as you can't even abide the maximum length your message has, which you speak of. Therefore I reckon you lost the second 'sapien' too.
Yes, now you may call me "people", and yourself... well you're mute. You monkey.
Just rambling. /ignored6 -
JavaScript is a rollercoaster. From "Golly hello world is easy and I can make webpages now", to "wtf '1'+1 is '11' kill me now", to "it's not be that bad if you know how to use it", to discovering typescript and it starts feeling like a real language.
... until you can't build the project because you have too many types so you blow the memory limit in node. I can up the limit, but I can't guarantee that we won't blow past this in the future. Browsing issues on the ts repo reveals that this has been a thing for years.
Sticking with the rollercoaster analogy I'm now at "Burn it all to the ground".5 -

The craziest deadline I've ever had is DEFINITELY to learn Android programming AD WELL AS iOS programming to make an app for a startup i currently still work with, and the time limit i had was a week. This week included learning both languages, and creating the 3 screens they had ready for me. I somehow managed to finish it!
Toughest week EVER, so far.
Thanks a lot, bosses -_-11 -
Researchers were able to store 3 bits of data per cell in phase-change memory, beating the previous limit of 1 bit per cell, IBM said. PCM competes with dynamic random-access memory.

Forgot to change code in my api for rate limiting, after development. No unit tests.. because who really needs that right? 🤦♂️🙅♂️🤷♂️lolololol
Long story short, API went to production eventually, and stopped working almost immediately. Rate limiting was set for 2000 requests in a 1 hour time period. Not my finest moment.. fml 🤦♂️ -
Who thought it would be a good idea to limit the length of a dns record to 255 chars?
Is one really not allowed to use a proper dkim key in 2018!
The funny thing was that they just cut off the rest without informing the user!
Had to convince the guy to switch dns „provider“9 -
So not too long ago I made a rant about this time I told my superiors of a problem and it got shot down because "We don't want to save developer time".
I warned them that the CPU was going to reach it's limit because the issue involves exponential growth on CPU usage the more we develop.
As it turned out, despite my thoughts that we wouldn't reach that limit for over a year, a new development led to it blowing up in their face today.
I am now treated as the expert on the topic and they're rushing to plan my suggested implementation in the next release.
I'm mildly amused.5 -
This is a very mild rant about character limit saying that there are >0 characters left when writing comments, then refusing to submit.
I'm so fucking infuriated! I almost raised an eyebrow in anger! What the fuck, my life is literally ruined, this bug is making my toilet visits insignificantly worse!4 -
What’s the most nonsensical habit that your non-tech-savvy friends or family have with computers or electronic devices?
Here’s mine: when my parents first got iPhones, they were deathly afraid of going over their data plan limit, so they would go into Settings and turn cellular data off whenever they weren’t actively using the phone...8 -
Telstra and Vodafone Australia have released unlimited data plans for mobile.
With a base of40GB for $69/month and 40GB for $60/ month respectively.
When you go over the limit, it then throttles you to 1.5Mbps max.
It's a start, better than charging you heaps for going over, but they still have a way to go...6 -
While testing the newly discovered "primesieve" C library, I forgot to change the limit variable from 1e10 to just 10 when giving the value through pow to make it more explicit.
Now my PC is dying in front of me while trying to compute the Gogol nth prime number. Nice.3 -

What developer/team thought that this would be a fucking brilliant option to put in this in a game?
Btw there is no VSync option, just “Limit to 30 FPS”11 -
Fuuuuckk. My phone made a video whilst being in my pocket. Google photos uploaded it... Now I'm 2GB over my data bundle limit on the 3rd of the month.... 😑
Apparently the android function "auto-disconnect from network" has a bug, which is gonna cost me1 -
What the actual f. I just changed my password on uplay to a 30 character password which works fine on the web account manager. Apparantly some moron decided to limit password field in the uplay client where your actual games are stored to 17 or 18 characters.
And that while they want to "improve" security. Please ubisoft, fix your shit4 -
apparently my bank's password length limit of 10,000 is too much for paypal's app to handle and it fucking imploded. sadly, no screenshots were allowed by the app, but it fucking broke so hard it spat logs and shit at me with no formatting or anything. it was NUTS dude8

My boss just now: "In a 32 bit machine the memory limit is 1.6 GB. After that programs routinely crash."
What really happens IMO? He writes programs that crash when they reach 1.6 GB allocated and the architecture is 32 bit. But it's a limit of his software, not one of the OS.8 -

Job Application Rant #1
So, today I found a great job posting on Linkedin. I was excited and created a unique cover letter and my resume and applied. The job was in another country and I need EU work visa for the job.
The contact for the post was also founder of the company. I asked him, via Linkedin, that if they would sponsor the visa for me if everything went good.
He replied to me that " yes we do sponsor visas, but you have only 3 years of programming experience..."(three dots included). I was like wtf, did I miss important part of post about experience minimum limit or something. I would not like to be spam-applier, guy who applies without reading requirements etc.
I checked requirements again there is no minimum experience limit. Anyways, I thanked him for swift response but damn bruh, do not put unlockable requirements to job posts, so someone's dream would not be crushed.3 -
Just a thought, but aren't all those "looking glass" 's, as abusable as w3c checkers to mass flood for free? there's atleast a thousand of those and none of them have any limit in place4

1. it like playing with lego, but for adults, and you have almost no limit
2. it's the best way I know to express an idea
3. I just love having the PC doing exactly what I tell it to do, even if it doesn't make any sense whatsoever -
This is probably VERY OLD, but why don't devRant supports Markdown? Having to upload (not paste or drag) code screenshots and having to UPPERCASE to yell or emphasize text feels... quite non-dev.
I found the bug repo and checked the Markdown issue has... almost three years.
I just came by the @highlight bot. Seriously? There are several layers of "wrong" with that hahah
Bonus: not very good UX to write a message, try to post it, and ONLY THEN get to know there's a time limit. This should show when you open the form, not when you submit it.... But I just sent a bug report on that, at least.
Bonus 2: if the char limit is 5k, why's the textbox so tiny on the web?7 -
So where I work, we used to push our code from test servers to production every tuesday/thursday exactly at one in the afternoon. Every time there was a push, I would play "push it to the limit" blasting over my speakers. Now we have an automated push and I never really listen to that song anymore. I miss those days. WordPress uses 25+ MySQL connections per person. MySQL limit is set to 100. 4 people can bring down a critical component of the company. Only fix is to write custom MySQL connector using PDO and persistence connections. Added a Resistor cache just for good measure.8

Okey, so the recruiters are getting smarter, I just clicked how well do you know WordPress quiz (I know it's from a recruiter, already entered a php quiz An might win a drone)
So the question is how to solve this issue:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2348617 bytes) in /home4/xxx/public_html/wp-includes/plugin.php on line xxx
A set memory limit to 256
B set memory limit to Max
C set memory limit to 256 in htaccess
D restart server
These all seem like bad answers to me.
I vote E don't use the plug-in, or the answer that trumps the rest, F don't use WordPress4 -
There's this online game I like to play, basically you can play against 2 or 3 other people / robots. It's been free to play for almost a decade, but recently they decided to limit how many games you can play each day, unless you buy membership. It's not much, about 2€ per month, so I bought it to support the devs, they're doing good work and they're not spamming players with ads, so they need to get money for those servers somewhere.
But now I kinda regret it; there used to be a whole lot of casual players online all the time, now casual players reach their daily limit and when I log on in the evening, there are almost exclusively paying members left, giving you absolute shit for the tiniest mistakes.
On a completely unrelated note, what casual / relaxing multiplayer games would you recommend that don't require too much thinking & long-term skills?12 -

- Tap resend...no SMS
- Wait half an hour...no SMS
- Tried few times...Started getting error: This number cannot be registered..
- Today I've tried again
- Phone number accepted
- Wait for SMS...no SMS
- Tried adding my number to a friend's twitter account...Received SMS code..
- Tried again signing up with my phone number, got error: This number cannot be registered..

How can I reach my f***** limit when I haven't even received a mail!
I've been trying to signup to twitter for 2 f**** days now with no luck, wtf is happening? it's a major social network for f*** sake.
And what's worse there is no way to send support mail, their "Contact US" page only has options for existing users..8 -

I just gave a simple API which fetches recent searches by pinging an index on elasticsearch to the UI developer.

Friday:
I send a mail the client a Google doc with elaborate details about evaluation of an Android tablet from a Chinese manufacturer.
Monday:
The client is upset, he says "You say there is no GPS chip on the tablet while the manufacturer says otherwise"
Me- "I have clearly mentioned that it has a GPS chip"
Client- Opens the Google doc, points to a sentence. Looks at me like I did something horrible.
Me - **This guys is either word blind or something else is wrong with him, the line reads 'GPS chip available'**
Me- "Look, it says 'GPS chip available'.
Client- **Blinks n blinks again** "Alright, but why did you share a Google document, why not PDF, docx"
Me-**Politely** "You can download the document in any format, look I will show you..."
Client- "It should have been in the mail itself ideally"
Me- **WTH** "We normally maintain a document for such things to keep everything organised, but if you want I will put everything in mail itself"
Client- "Hmm.. do both from next time"
Me- "Alright" **BS**
Client- "Why is the new feature taking so much time"
Me- "As planned earlier, we going to deliver it tomorrow"
Client- "Why not today??" **Gives a strange look.**
Me thinking - **Enough**
Me- "See, I am trying to integrate a smarten with a socket connection, reading it's data via exposed APIs that are hardly documented, we need faster performance so I need to implement caching, multi threading, offline handling, multiple processes to avoid memory fluctuations, sync adapter to sync data...."
Client- "Ok ok ok, it's fine if you give working build tomorrow"
Me- "Ok, fine"

So this web company i joined had a page load time in minutes. The free text search (inverted index search, based on elasticsearch) queries would return results in 10-45 seconds (should be milliseconds always). The indexes had no schema. And they would crawl data and feed into mssql db, which had a 2 gb/db limit on the free version. So everytime the db hit the limit, a new db was created and the name was incremented by one.
Had a very tough time cleaning up that mess. Plus the architect who had made this architecture was on his way out and unhelpful to the core.
What was worse was that most of the changes i did were very simple changes that should have been done long back. Basic sanity changes.4 -

Why, in 2023, do we still have a path length limit in Windows?
I know it's not that trivial finding a good soution, but at least if I managed to get a .zip which I can't extract in that directory because of a few files with a too long file name, let me know in advance (and not during the extraction) and maybe (amazing idea) let me know how many steps I have to go back in the directories tree to make it work…12 -
How do you folks handle your pagination at backend?
I was initially using skip and limit. But that is prone to error.
Then I thought about using last sent items id and using its created_at time and fetching rows/documents after that. But that too is prone to error ( more than one can have same timestamp) hence either having data repeats or data That gets missed.
What is your goto strategy for pagination?8 -

Another GeeksForGeeks rant
Wisecrack got me a bit interested in primes (just a passing interest). I looked up their python implementation of "Sieve of Atkin". Wow, is it bad.
First of all, they use PascalCase instead of underscore_natation so that's points off right there.
Their function takes a limit as a parameter (pretty obviously).
Their program breaks if you pass a prime number as a limit. That's right, if you give it a 2, it breaks. Pretty pathetic.
Reading the comments, their Java implementation is wrong too.
For fucks sake guys, if you're going to have an algorithm blog at least write good algorithms.6 -

In last episode of "How SystemD screwed me over", we talked about Systemd's PrivateTMP and how it stopped me from generating SSL certificates.
In today's episode - SystemD vs CGroups!
Mister Pottering and his team apparently felt that CGroups are underused (As they can be quite difficult to set up), and so decided to integrate them into SystemD by default. As well as to provide a friendlier interface to control their values.
One can read about these interactions in the manual page "systemd.resource-control"
All is cool so far. So what happened to me today?
Imagine you did a major system release upgrade of a production server, previously tested on a standalone server. This upgrade doesn't only upgrade the distribution however, it also includes the switch from SysVInit to SystemD. Still, everything went smooth before, nothing to worry now then, right? Wrong.
The test server was never properly stress-tested. This would prove to be an issue.
When the upgrade finishes, it is 4 AM. I am happy to go to bed at last. At 6 AM, however, I am woken up again as the server's webservices are unavailable, and the machine is under 100% CPU load. Weird, I check htop and see that Apache now eats up all 32 virtual cores. So I restart it, casting it off to some weird bug or something as the load returns to normal.
2 hours later, however, the same situation occurs. This time, I scour all the logs I can, and find something weird - Many mentions that Apache couldn't create a worker thread? That's weird.
Several hours of research and tinkering later, I found out the following:
1 - By default, all processes of a system that runs SystemD are part of several CGroups. One of these CGroups is the PID CGroup, meant to stop a runaway process from exhausting all PIDs/TIDs of a system.
This limit is, by default, set to a certain amount of the total available PIDs. If a process exhausts this limit, it can no longer perform operations like fork().
So now, I know the how and why, but how should I solve this? The sanest option would be to get a rough estimate of just how many threads the Apache webserver might need. This option, though, is harder, than apparent. I cannot just take the MaxRequestsWorkers number... The instance has roughly double the amount of threads already. The cause being, as I found out, the HTTP/2 module, which spawns additional threads that do not count towards this limit. So I have no idea what limit to set.
Or I could... Disable the limit for just the webserver via the TasksAccounting switch. I thought this would work. And it did seem to... Until I ran out of TIDs again - Although systemctl status apache2.service no longer reported the number of tasks or a task limit of the process, the PID CGroup stayed set to the previous limit. Later I found out that I can only really disable the Task Accounting for all the units of a given slice and its parents.
This, though, systemctl somewhat didn't make apparent (And I skimmed the manual, that part was my fault)
So... The only remaining option I had was to... Just set the limit to infinite. And that worked, at last.
It took me several hours to debug this issue. And I once again feel like uninstalling systemd again, in favor of sysvinit.
What did I learn? RTFM, carefully, everything is important, it is not enough to read *half* the paragraph of a given configuration option...
Oh, and apache + http/2 = huge TID sink. -

at one point documents were useful things to align people to the relevant information to the tasks they must complete for everything to work out
now documents are a ritual, and relevant information is even forgotten or omitted and considered secondary to the document existing and looking like a professional document
I wonder if this is how all industries evolve
at one point there were people who knew what they were doing, they created processes so nobody is left behind
and over time, whoever made the processes, the spirit for their existence, is forgotten
and you're left with empty rituals, so devoid of their original function, the humans subjected to these things, crushed by them, can't even discern what their usage is
evidently if you put monkeys in an enclosure with some apples up a tree with a mechanism that if a monkey goes up the tree and takes an apple it sprays all the other monkeys in the enclosure with water
the monkeys will learn to pull down any monkey trying to go up the tree, because they don't wanna get sprayed
and this will keep going, generations will change and yet they'll still religiously pull down the monkeys, in a ritual... nobody remembers why only that their parents did this to them, so they do it to others
if you take the trap away, they never figure it out, which is how this story is typically told
but regardless of if the trap is there or not
wouldn't you wanna know and see it for yourself instead of following empty rituals?!
and what of people who erroneously view things as traps, and pull people down, but they were just seeing things?!

When you have a long line like this...
if ($obj->getStupidlyLongNamedThing() + $hard + $harder * $hard / $harder + $obj->getAlsoStupidLongThing([$sillyLongExpression, $thing]) > $obj->omgThisIsInsane());
If you're just going to be lazy and break it up however where where ever so it looks like crap...
if ($a->b()
____&& $a->c());
Then I urge you to do one of two things:
* Shut up your face and turn on word wrap in the IDE rather than manually doing it even worse.
* Break the long parts into variable assignments or something.
* (or get a wider screen)
Example:
$a = $obj->getStupidlyLongNamedThing();
$b = $hard + $harder * $hard / $harder;
$c = [$sillyLongExpression, $thing];
$d = $obj->getAlsoStupidLongThing($c);
$e = $obj->omgThisIsInsane();
if ($a + $b + $d > $d);

Only time will tell!!! Sorted out the issue until the next user with millions of objects in their buckets -
I took a hakerRank challenge for an interview, I failed miserably.
All challenges included subsequences and I just kept reaching memory limit... My algorithm gets the answer, if just takes forever if the input is too large.
So fuck stupid me.
I am now googling about it but can not find something that explains it clear (in my opinion)
Would appreciate if you guys can recommend some resources.2 -
We had a dispute @ work yesterday on this topic :
aproach 1 :
$res = getSomeData( [ 'filter_1' => 'str_1', 'filter_2' => 'str_2', ... 'limit' => 10 );
with
function getSomeData( $data )
{
...
}
VS
aproach 2 :
$res = getSomeData( 'str_1', 'str_2', ... 10 );
with
function getSomeData( $filter_1 = '', $filter_2 = 'default_str', ... $limit = 20 )
{
...
}
I had used 1-st b/c IMHO it's more dynamic and easy to maintain and call ( especially when there are many params, most of which not used on each call )
and my colleague didn't liked it w/h his main arguments that one can not easily see the needed params and no default vals for them ( the latest could be easily corrected in the function body ). I'm curious to read your opinions, arguments & contra arguments for each aproach12 -
hello, guys, I need some information, I am very newbie in this ... my pc is an ACER aspire 5750g with 4 GB DDR3 at the beginning, I upgrade it until 6 GB for now, I want to know what is the limit to upgrade the RAM? where can I find that information? any information is well accepted!
OS : ubuntu/win 103 -
I was really teasing myself about it a week ago, but I definitely think now that building a language server before I try to get people to try Orchid is the right call.
There is a ceiling to the quality of error reporting without editor support, and because I'm not happy with the best I could've possibly gotten, I didn't really put that much effort into it. Before I got started on the language server, the interpreter would fail with the first error.
Because with LSP the new theoretical limit of DX is the lack of type information which still isn't great but it's a problem I already live with, I'm compelled to meet that limit by perfecting error detection.
It also helps that the interpreter's startup time is 2ms so I can simply run it in thread on every keystroke to generate truly live, basically instantaneous feedback.17 -
Fucking dot files...
Written a deployment script to reduce the amount of another dude's fuck ups when updating code on the server. Apparently the website executable automatically generated TLS certificates (let's encrypt) and placed them into the local hidden folder.
There is a limit on how many certificates a single domain can generate so... The website is down...7 -
Do you guys think someday programming languages will have reached their absolute limit? Where any more abstraction or additions would be more of a detriment than a plus?2

Any idea to get around the cluster storage limitation?
I have to train a model on a large dataset, but the limit I have is about 39GB. There is space on my local disk but I don't know if I can store the data on my computer and have the model train on the cluster resources.1 -

Any iPhone app developers. desperately looking for a very basic app that controls iPad screen time. For example between the hours of 9pm and 9am the screen is locked and requires a passcode to use it. The passcode has to be different to the device passcode to be set by parent. Set for weekdays etc. a bit like you would set central heating. apps out there are way too involved and based on setting individual app time. Hope someone can do this, i guarantee it’ll sell. Keep it simple.1

I hate having too much security, on the user side. I have 2 step verification on anything that allows and also most of my passwords are up to a limit, seriously. This is why I have LastPass but obviously no work I ever been in allowed it. Except Freelancing and my own software / apps.
-
It's okay to slow down. Seriously it's fine. You can write 203 wpm... as long as the command you enter includes all necessary limits. Nothing is worse than having ansible rm -r the wrong directory or the wrong server because you missed a limit and put all.undefined wk26 learn from mistakes devops ansible take your time time is both the solution and the problem

Me: I opened a support ticket with the software vendor last week. I haven’t heard from them yet and the can be slow to respond. I’m unable to debug the issue on my end. If you can’t wait, here are some solutions to explore. [sends a few suggestions]
Stakeholder: Can I give you examples of another error that I think is related? Is that worth exploring?
Me: 😑 No. I’ve reached the limit of what I can do for debugging. I need the vendor to answer my support ticket. -
I feel like I'm starting to hit my wall when it comes to my job. Plus, my mind is so fucking checked out.2

Well... best thing you could do is not limit yourself to one language and one area of programming. Experience and being better comes from exposing yourself to variety of programming areas and seeing how things are done there. :)

So, I just got a new laptop and its a pretty sweet machine and I wanted to get coding in android studio but I can't download the SDK because my ISP has a FUP limit of 2 gigs.Fuck internet in India.1

Got a technical test coming up for a job. Had never been asked to do one before so I don't know what to expect 😅
(test at home and no time limit by the way so that's less pressure I guess) -
Somebody out there please tell me why I'm uploading a 17 MB file and PHP isn't showing a $_FILES array? It's just not there. I've set the max post limit and the max upload limit to 128 MB. The files are going to get way bigger than this. Why does this server like hurting me?23

Apparently there's a limit to how many API endpoints you can deploy in a second using CDK. Thanks for not having an error message that says that and wasting two weeks.1

Websites that have a password length limit that's way too short and/or don't allow symbols.
Example, I think EA has a password limit to 15 characters and doesn't allow spaces, underscores or even symbols, meaning that your password must be only letters and numbers, which is quite unsecure. -
Do you know of any free tools to limit the network of a specific application on windows?
NetLimiter works but I have to buy it after the test period. Could not find anything else.5 -
So the sigmoid function creates a limit of 1 as x approaches infinity meaning big high heapum activation value gets closer and closer to 1 ?
At a guess it only ever reaches 1 because of precision
Limitations ?19 -
"To help you debug your app or extension, when you've loaded it unpacked, there's no limit to how often the alarm can fire."

So there is no limit while developing - but stuff will start timing out in production...
Just one question:
Why does Google give their devs Crystal for free? -
Alright devs, in the US, can I not get a SIM card on which I simply put some money, and can use that until it runs out? Seems there is a 30-day limit tied to everything!!! I don't need data for 30 days!!!
This is totally possible in Europe, what is going on with regulation in US? Seems like it should be illegal.4 -
Posting here so everyone can tell me if they have the same problem. I can't scroll through older notifications, so I get stuck with notifications in the end since I can't read them (outside the limit fetched). I think @dfox should implement infinite scrolling like on the Rants screen.
Do any of you suffer from the same problem? -
How upvote whoring will be on devRant : Guys upvote this Rant to reach the upper limit on the votes counter and know what variable type it is !!!1!!1!!3

On Dailymotion, failed uploads count towards the 24-hour rate limit.
Dailymotion has a rate limit of somewhere between 10 to 15 videos (appears to vary). I experienced a glitch where I dragged 10 videos into the uploader (the highest number; years earlier it oddly was 22), and none of the uploads would start. However, it still counted towards the daily rate limit, immediately blocking me from uploading for 24 hours. I have a slight suspicion that this failure was deliberate.
Also, that rate limit is indiscriminate of video size. A gigabyte-sized 4K video counts equally towards the rate limit as a 7 MB 240p video.1 -
I love serverless functions but I'm so tired of complex orchestration, juggling event parameters and now scipy+numpy+pandas exceeds size limit of 250MB..
Feel like cramming it all in a monolith like the geezers of yore and be done with it3 -
I think I hit the character limit in JSON.parse() but can't seem to find any documentation about it...8

Who the fuck thinks that an private international api should have a limit of 5 tps (transactions per second) lol. Sadly I can't say the name but damn if I have 5 users just browsing our application, it will be throttled.
Mailed the guy why I need a lot more and now its very silent, really hope he can push the limit.6 -
Ran a windows registry error fixer 5 times, each time it says there are only 512 errors. I don't know if it is failing to delete them, or hitting some type of self imposed RAM limit...
Also half of the comments on Cnet say they think it's pretty good, and half say it's spam ware, but I haven't seen any ads. (average 4.5/5)
Anyone know if "Windows Registry Repair" actually works?2 -
How much trouble am I asking for in allowing for very large strings in attributes of json data?
I went and looked at the maximums for the string in json strings. I cannot see any real limitations. I did see if sending json data to a browser that it should not be more than 40MB. That seems excessive. I also checked my internal data types. The string can hold 2GB. Then there is a the server it will be served from in OPCUA. Which I saw discussion of strings in the 77KB range.
We are using a json file to configure what points to read from a modbus device. I am adding fields for name and notes. I could limit these fields, but part of me wants to see if some customer tries to make the world burn. For the most part we will be editing this file. But the customer may want to as well.2 -
Almost give up but finally found a solution to my problem, fucking proguard!!! fucking multidex, fucking limit of methods.... android -_-...

I have a daily data limit on my mobile data which is the only one I use since the others are shit including my current landline connection. There's a good one but it's not available in my area yet.
So I have to wait days to download anything heavy. To top it all off, my friends with their great internet downloading gigs of stuff makes me feel empty inside.1 -
!dev I put a limit order at $166 while the last trade price was $167 but it was immediately filled... What does that mean?

What free web hosting to never use
000webhost (annoying watermark, main site takes 1 to 2 minutes to load)
InfinityFree (retarded staff, slow asf)
AwardSpace (only 1 gb of space)
What to use: ct8.pl (polish and 5000 user limit, supports .exe files)2 -
Tried to pull a Java solution, originally developed on linux, into my windows environment to test a Jenkins job. The build job wouldn't run on my box due to reaching the arbitrary max windows path limit in command prompt..why??7

An old data conversion environment using access and and vb6. I used this in 2013 or so... It's still that company's standard.
For Enterprise database conversion projects, a 2 gb limit on the database size and awkward stupid syntax it didn't work well. -
Pff today I start 400 threads in python initialized in a for loop, one thread per record, each record initialize a heavy process, Memory Limit Exceeded, I'm frustrated with this shit!
How to run 400 records doing a heavy task preventing the CPU to close the task executed by timeout limit exceeded, or how to run multiple threads to end before reach timeout limit each task without exceeding the memory limit.

Hello! Could anyone please explain how can I limit the number of entries to the website with one login? It will be Joomla-based. I want to get a unique device id apart from the platform. What should I choose - php, javascript or anything else? Can anyone tell?
Thank you.11 -
When a function has parameters for "limit" and "skip", make sure to double check those first when something seems broken. I switched them around so limit was 0, and I kept wondering why it returned 0 objects. It took me way too long before I figured that one out...

Anybody fluent in Adobe Illustrator, with 30 minutes of spare time feeling unlikely generous today?
I need a tiny, tiny, tiny and simple shape/logo to be done, but my credit card is locked until next month due to previously put (by me) limit.
I can only pay in special thanks on the projects (open source) page. -
I want to create an open source sort of clone of Facebook but privacy minded.. I deleted mine a few weeks ago because of the massive amount of datacollection. I mean, talking on messenger about shoes for example, then going on fb to see shoe commercials. I mean, fck that man.. you can change some settings but nothing in regards to this. This go beyond my limit of privacy.9

And how often do you have such thoughts?
Sometimes I feel too lonely. Even during masturbation. Then I work under running water from the tap. Feeling as if someone else is next to us and we are doing it together. It is especially nice when my sperm and water merge in one stream. It's like we're pushing ourselves to the limit at the same time... -
My company wanted me to make a signature for the google mail employee accounts but google said its too long even though the limit is at 10,000 symbols and it only had 300 letters visble with 3 images. Then I realized that google counts all the html stuff as symbols. I spent the entire day on optimizing the signature and wondering why it didnt fuckn work until I sent an email with a shorter version and looked at the source code. 9000 symbols. What the fuck google. No more computer stuff for today. Brain is #Fried

Any descent limit value for a SQL query?

I thought I had to VARCHAR in non-SQLite RDBMS. I was wrong. There is TEXT.
1. PostGres seems to work better with TEXT.
2. There is an ORM that forces VARCHAR (255) by default.
3. But you can go over the limit without throwing errors.1 -
What is it with web devs that can't write effective PHP applications that don't need a 1 GB of Memory Limit?
Where are the days that 32MBs of memory was fine per request? Ugh...2 -
A frustration and a piece of advice - two in one...
Do NOT use InfluxDB 2 if you have more than 20 GB of data. I spent hours trying to get it to work, but it's no use. It crashes because it creates too many files to store all the data.
Apparently 20 GB is the limit 🤔💭4 -
