Are you serious? Are you afraid of an SQL injection or something, and instead of properly sanitizing your queries you disallow characters? Or is your software and database so outdated that you're afraid special characters will break it? Goodbye security15

An average day:
1. Start working on feature

3. Feature doesn't work
4. Spend 7 hours refactoring and fixing imaginary bugs
5. Add the 3 characters that were missing

I have the habit of immediately closing parentheses after opening them, then insert the code.
The problem is, this applies to hand writing as well. Because you cannot move characters in a hand written exam I spend half of the time writing, then removing parentheses.

User Ip Address is too long (maximum is 30 characters).
Okay, dear third-party API, I guess users with IPv6 don't deserve the service... And wtf is 30-char limit for an IP address, when IPv4 can be only 15 characters long, and IPv6 can be up to 39 characters? Did you calculate a weighted average of IP length to get that number?11 -
Can we just talk about how generous the founders of devRant are? They gave us 5000 characters per post to rant. That's just absolutely insane.4

I have bank accounts with 5 different banks.
I HAVE TO use 4-5 different government websites.
Every fucking place: you cannot use these "~-/;^"(some others too) symbols in your password.
Are you freaking fucking kidding me!! And all of them have a limit of 12or15 characters.
If this wasn't mind numbingly stupid enough, they fucking go ahead and force you to change password every fucking month or two.
THIS IS NOT SECURITY. YOU SHOULDN'T FORCE SOMEONE TO LIMIT THERE PASSWORDS TO:
- CERTAIN CHARACTERS
- A 15 CHARACTER SIZE LIMIT
- THRN OVERTHAT, FORCE TO CHANGE PASSWPRDS PERIODICALLY.

I ’m kinda jealous of English programmers. How cool must it be to have all the common characters for programming fit onto a single modifier, and to have all special characters for default vim keybindings available with shift. On a hungarian keyboard, braces and square brackets are both AltGr-bound, but parentheses are shift-bound. Oh, and the semicolon is AltGr + the key right above it, so it breaks touch typing.21

We might achieve world peace one day and still won't have agreed over indentation.
Indentation = TAB. Just 1 character (N spaces = N characters = more disk space, duh!). And then each dev can chose their own TAB width (in spaces) in their IDE of choice. Beautiful.11 -

Tl;dr stupid password requirements
Begin quote
Password must not contain any non-alphanumeric characters.
Your Password change was not accepted. Enter your current Password correctly following the rules for New Passwords. Please try again.
Passwords must be between 8 and 12 characters in length and MUST contain each of the following:
At least 1 lower case character (a-z)
At least 1 upper case character (A-Z)
At least 1 numeric digit (0-9)
But, MUST NOT contain:
more than five repeating characters in a row (e.g. 111111356 would not be valid, but 112233445 would be valid)
spaces or other special characters
NOTE: Your new password cannot be the same as any of your 10 previous passwords.
End quote
Are you fucking kidding me? Only (26+26+10)^8 through
(26+26+10)^12 different passwords to go through? It's like the oxygen wasters that built this website give zero fucks about security.
Why? This is the site that manages money and investments. Just allow passwords up to 64 characters, allow any ascii character and just fucking encod the characters to prevent any Injunction.4 -

Yesterday a strange bug appeared in Chrome: In a small web app we have some umlaut characters like äöü. Strangely said characters were displayed as cyrillic, but only on my pc... On every other device it worked. I spent about 5 hours of checking encodings (everything was in UTF-8), reading posts in the almighty stackoverflow.
Finally i figured out, the font was broken. After reinstalling it, everything was peaceful again in my head. -

why people around me act like dump. i have recently worked with this site, which is written in php.
customer: (yelling) my website is hacked, fix it immediately
me : ok sir, we will restore your site immediately
after finishing talk with customer. i have checked website, there is no sign of website being hacked. i have checked server logs and website for security breach, there is no sign.
me: your website is not hacked, sir. can you please tell me where you have seen hacked page.
customer: look at those pages
after seen that page i facepalmed myself. it's a bug, person who created that page just splitted string without using any multibyte function, so page is showing with corrupted characters. i fixed it and problem solved. i have told about that bug, to the person who created that page.
me: hey you have used this function which is not able to handle multibyte characters, you should use multibyte character functions for that one.
person: every characters are the same. we shouldn't need to handle that way.

Terminator's broadcast feature is nice.
However, it's fragile as crap, and oftentimes sends duplicate characters, or adds garbage.
Quite awhile ago I posted a PSA on how to fix it (by killing ibus) but now it's broken for me again. And due to just how it broke, I've given up on fixing it. Instead of broadcasting one or two duplicate characters like before, it now hangs for many seconds because it's broadcasting THREE BLOODY MEGABYTES WORTH OF DUPLICATES with every keystroke.
Like, seriously?
How do you fail that hard?2 -

If your site only supports alpha numeric characters in my password. You should tell me that when I reset my password rather than just killing the special characters out of the string and submitting my password like that. Also, you should let me use special characters in my password, it's 2017.8 -
So, I just created an account on a premium objective information website. It basically sells access to several articles on laws and general "financial relevant subjects". It is important for my work and they have pretty strict password requirements, with minimum: 18 characters length, 2 HC, 2 LC, 2 special, 2 numbers.
Without thinking twice, openned Keepass and generated a 64 length password, used it, saved it. All's good. They then unlocked my access and... wrong password. I try again... wrong password.
Thinking to myself: "No, it can't be that, maybe I only copied a portion of the password or something, let me check on CopyQ to see what password I actually used."
Nope, the password is indeed correct.
Copy the first 32 characters of the password, try it... it works...
yeah, they limit password length to 32 characters and do not mention it anywhere ... and allow you to use whatever length you want... "Just truncate it, its fine"1 -

If anyone has used the super Mario 64 online mod, it's extremely easy to crash all clients connected to any server. You have to send a chat message payload with a length greater than 256 characters. The clients do not do any bound checking and write the payload directly to super Mario 64 memory. This causes all clients connected to the game to crash. I will leave how to send a chat payload > 256 characters up to you. I've confirmed my method works!2

Care to help me with some some-what basic math?
100 characters exist in the ASCII codec.
I'm trying to figure out the minimum amount of characters required to encode them. (= Turning each digit into a two digit char set that doesn't mach any other char set to enable me to do other things with them. i.e: A = dE)
It would simply be: x^2, where x is the number of minimum characters required.. But I don't know how to interact that with 100 to find x.11 -

I had to create an account on a website. I used LastPass to generate a strong password. I entered it and got the following message:
"Password must be between 8 and 16 characters and must have special characters (? , ! & #) and numbers"
My password was 20 characters, me annoyed to generate a 16 character password. Filled it in and got the same error. That was it for me.
Who dafuq limits a password to 16 characters, that's fucking nothing. It did not accept all special characters, only the ones that were showed (like 5 or so).
And here comes the worst part...
It's a bank website! I had to create the most most most insecure password in history for it to work.7 -

Found this one after 4 hours of debugging... Want to screw with other teams? Shove some UTF-8 BOM characters into JSON responses consumed by Node (and other frameworks as well). Watch as they scramble to find why JSON.parse() fails on seemingly nothing.
Background: BOM markers are hidden characters that indicate text stream information to applications. They are not ignored by many JSON parsers and throw exceptions that don't appear to make sense.1 -

Actual validation message. I will omit the culprit to not shame them:
Your password must be at least eight (8) characters long and contain at least one letter,
one digit and three (3) special characters. No combination of any of the previously mentioned
requirements may be in a repeat success of one (1) or more. Special characters must be
separated by at least two (2) non-special characters, not including numbers. You may not
use more more than one (1) upper-cased and one (1) lower-cased letters in order together. You
may not begin or end your password with an uppercase letter or special character. You may use
no more than eight (8) special characters in your password.
If you need any assistance with this process, please send a message to our support staff.

I was trying to fill out an application on UltiPro yesterday, but it kept throwing an error “Password must be at least 6 characters.” This was puzzling, as my password was 12 characters with upper, lower, number, and symbol.

So...buffered query kept crashing even though I have a row limit of 10001 on my abstract datatables class. I didn't realize it was buffered because I grab the results in a for loop as a fetch. Well, I tracked it down to being the size of the email content that I'm selecting (and then using strip_tags and substring in PHP before returning to the front-end). So it's totally a catch-22 at this point because if I select let's say...substring 500 characters and most of that is line breaks and other html junk, I may only get a couple characters of normal text (or none at all) after stripping tags and doing a final substring to get the 50 characters of text I want to display. I said screw it and took the email content out of the table all together. You have to view it to see the content now. I should probably be storing a text-only version of the email, but argh..that's a lot of extra data.

Actually I'm writing a Facebook Messenger Bot. Characters limit for each sending message is 320, so I made simple function to split messages on parts. I set the limit to 315, 5 characters less than Facebook.
Spend 3 days on finding solutio why messenger is sending only last part of message.

Messenger has problem only when it's 315!

I'm parsing the results from a hierarchical database query to make it compatible with another hierarchical database. Specifically, I'm parsing user created notes from a pipe-delimited CSV that was translated from the query result. Everything runs smoothly. I send my output to be processed through our batch system. Everything checks out as expected.
A couple blank notes throw exceptions, but I knew that was going to happen. Then suddenly, I read "Cannot create note with unprintable characters"
Okay?

I hate when application is lying to me. For example when it says my message has proper length, in this case maximal allowed length (showing 0 characters remaining), but then throws some random error message like "Your comment is probably blank.". PS: This does devRant Android app and web version as well. -
