Was watching 'Johnny English Strikes Again' when I discovered a secret message in the movie.

My father just called me while i'm at work:
"You go a big fancy letter writting in english from outside the country (english is not my native or even my second language) , what is it ? .. "
I realised after that it's the devrant stickers 😂
Can't wait to go home and open it 😁2 -

As a developer in Germany, I don't understand why anything related to development like IDEs, git clients and source code documentation should be localized/translated.
Code is written in english, configuration files too. Any technology, any command name in a terminal, every name of a tool or code library, every keyword in a programming language is written in english. English is the language of every developer. And English is simply a required skill for a developer.
Yet almost everything nowadays is translated to many other languages, espacially MS products. That makes development harder for me.
My visual studio menus are a mess of random german/english entries due to 3rd party extensions.
My git client, "source tree" uses wierd translations of the words "push" and "commit". These commands are git features! They should not be translated!
Buttons and text labels in dev tools often cut the text off because they were designed for english and the translated text is bigger and does not fit anymore. Apparently no one is testing their software in translated mode.
And the worst of all: translated fucking exception and error massages! Good luck searching for them online.
Apple does one thing damn right. They are keeping all development related stuff english (IDE, documentation). Not wasting money on translations which no developer needs.19 -
How can they think that anybody falls for those ads?
Honestly. = != ==
Also: German and English mixed? Choose one, best stick to English if you want to look serious about looking for developers.
What does Job == interested even mean? The job is interested in the candidate?14 -
Our teacher asked us to write an essay. Since I'm not a native English speaker, I asked him if I could write it in English (essays are easier in English). He was cinfused at first, but said:
-You can write it in any language!
Guess who has an html/css essay23 -
A client complained about the visual designs containing 'lorem ipsum' text because they 'didn't understand spanish'. And that they wanted their site in english...9

I'm impressed about how everyones english among DevRant is nearly flawless - it's users are based all around the globe and still, I know nobody in real life who is even near fluent in speaking English (fellow German potatoes will probably know that feel)
Awesome! 😀28 -
Hello, guys.

Seriously anyone who doesn't use english names for variables and shit, get the fuck out! I don't care how many dicks you sucked, don't fucking do it!
I'm working on redoing a somewhat big database with a small team and the fuckers who designed the new database decided to use danish names everywhere and misspell shit! What the fuck are you doing!
Who the fuck calls it a birthdate? and misspells the danish equivalent?
And what the fuck is this, using _id and ID like they are the fucking same thing!?!
For the love of all that is holy, stick to english, one naming convention and check your crap spelling!
AARGH!19 -

I know that English isn't the native language of my country, but for fucks sake, if I'm telling you the right way to say/write it, remember it!

Am I enjoying Moto Mods? Of course
Am I enjoying Moto Moods? Vruum Vruum bitch.16 -
People giving Xcode bad reviews for being english only.
Stay the fuck away from development if english is a problem for you! 🤬
I'm already annoyed by the translation craze everywhere in development.
At least Apple remains sane in that regard.14 -
Why the fuck would people use non English html classes and IDs, or just randomly mix languages. Please don't fucking do this14

One of my favourite, encryption puzzles is this:

As a German developer living in Germany, I am used to write my code completely in English. In all of my former companies that was also the norm. In one company, we even talked completely in English with each other to a point where even if only German people where in a room, they would default to English at one point in a conversation because it became second nature to us.
(That company was very international and we had a lot of people from all over the world working there.)
Now, I work at a new German company that focuses on the German market. And for some reason I failed to ask them:
Do you write your code in English?
Because that's the norm, isn't it!? I just assumed it to be the case.
Nope! This time it is a mess of German and English term intermixing in glorious abysmal ways I never thought possible.
Sometimes we translate terms, sometimes we don't. So you have to wrap your mind around collections of words that COULD mean the same thing unless they don't. Best case, you have two words for the same thing, but I've seen up to five words (or abbreviations) to describe one business entity. Madness.
And don't get me started on the plurals. In English, it's almost exclusively: add an `s`.
In German, the singular and plural can be the same (e.g. all nouns ending with `-er`) so tough luck determining if you are on an object or an array of objects. (Weak typing language in use does not help either but that's an entirely different rant.)25 -
"Hey I am a programmer too! I can code anything, I bet I'm better than you!"

"Huh, that sounds cool! What languages do you like to write your programs in?"

Got a message yesterday from a company about some dev job that I applied for a while ago...
Don't remember anything about the requirements, but I know that they were exclusively looking for people highly proficient in spoken and written English.
From our brief chat, I can only hope that the position is for a FUCKING ENGLISH TEACHER!6 -
I fucking hate it when developers don’t respect user locale. My phone language is UK English, my Discord app language is UK English and my region is UK.
Then why the fuck is Discord showing me MM/DD/YYYY date format? How hard is it to pass locale when parsing time?19 -
I wonder, does one have to know English to code?
And does devrant auto translate other languages to English? Seems everyone here knows English wherever they're from.15 -
"Linux gilt als sehr sicheres Betriebssystem[...]"
In English: Linux is considered to be a very secure operating system.
LINUX IS A FUCKING KERNEL! ARGHHH!9 -
I ’m kinda jealous of English programmers. How cool must it be to have all the common characters for programming fit onto a single modifier, and to have all special characters for default vim keybindings available with shift. On a hungarian keyboard, braces and square brackets are both AltGr-bound, but parentheses are shift-bound. Oh, and the semicolon is AltGr + the key right above it, so it breaks touch typing.21

For some reason, seeing source code in my native language (Czech) disgusts me and decreases my motivation to read through it.
Anyone else knows that feeling?22 -

I wonder how many devs are learning English on devRant.
I'm kind of sad I don't get a chance to practice any (spoken) languages.21 -
Many thanks to DevRant, finally i'm learning english "in the real world"

My non-English-native-speaking dev brothers and sisters, the proper preposition is "for" not "since" when speaking about a length of time. For example:
"I have been studying CS for 2 years."
"I worked at Google for 6 months."
"This house has been on the market for 4 weeks."
I think some ESL class has been teaching everyone improperly.24 -
Today our team got the best grade in our Windows OS presentation in English.
I have talked about the security aspect and got an A.

Bought a series on Amazon, "Normal People". Trailer was English, my profile is set to Germany/English, but when I started the film, it was the German dubbing audio, with no option to switch to English. Could be worse, as I am a native German, but often 80% of the original atmosphere of anything gets lots by translation and German studio speakers.
Just in case staff at Amazon wonder why I rarely watch nor buy anything from them, this is one of the reasons. Of course they wouldn't, I'm just one in a million customers, but fuck them anyway.5 -
WHY THE FUCK DO MY TEACHERS KEEP USING SHITTY TRANSLATIONS FOR PROGRAMMING CONCEPTS?! Like dude, everything related to programming is in english, just use the fucking terms in english for fucks sake. There are some words like "array" that fit into portuguese sentences without needing translation, so why translate it?
Why do you use acronyms in portuguese? People in the Database Systems class will later read a lot the acronym DBMS but won't know what the fuck that is because they teach the acronym SGBD, which is a translation.
It's so cringy and useless, so many terms the students will have to translate back to english when they get out to the real world because everything related to programming is in english.
"oh but what if the person doesn't know english" you don't even have to know english, just associate the concept (which will be explained to you in your language) with an english word. Also if you don't know english you'll have a very hard time, so I'd suggest taking english classes as your electives.
Ok I'm done, I got it out of my system.6 -

1 year and a half ago, I quit the job where I spent almost 6 years; My first job after that was as a freelancer for certain company here in colombia, but after sometime I learned that freelancing for local companies is not well payed at all, so I decided to try to work with toptal(a pre-vetted freelancer platform)
So the process included a first interview with a HR person, it was a british lady that mopped the floor with me(she wasn't rude at all but I felt horrible) 'cuz I couldn't speak english good enough, and then I was rejected... Some time down the line I created a rant for anyone that were willing to speak sometime to practice english conversations. @jesustricks and @orhun answered and in fact I got to speak with them.
@amyshackles spoke with me too, I reached her out over linkedin 😊
Just wanted to say thank you, finally I got a job offer with a nearshore company, you helped me a lot there, speaking with you people gave confidence and more knowledge. Again thank you, love you guys.
PS: you don't have to love me back7 -
Woah?! Shiit? What was that?

Casual chat with a girl in Facebook.

"with that said" is the most overused phrase in meetings.

A friend asked me how people who don't speak English learn to code...he said, "Do they have to learn English first?"

I don't want to sound ethnocentric but is anyone else annoyed by having to correct the spelling of variable, class, table name, and other code after it was built overseas? I'm in a third round of combing consecutively deeper into the code to ferret out these misspellings so they don't go into production. Is it too much to ask that the freelancer who says he speaks and writes native English not then turn that work over to a subcontractor who clearly does not?4

What does PFA MOM stand for?
We're an international company, we all use English while working. That's all fine and good.
But there's one project manager that throws in really obscure acronyms that even I, a native English speaker, struggle with.
It's "please find attached minutes of meeting". Is it really that hard to type?15 -

My language capability is literally splitting in half making me more and more retarded/incapable in both languages (my native and English).
The main reason is that my daily reading and listening is mostly in English(and happen online) meanwhile I work and have to interact at the job in native language, which is much less demanding of native language interactions because I code in silence 😣

Did any of you hear Tim Cook's recent statement?
'Apple CEO Tim Cook says it is more important to learn how to code than it is to learn English as a second language.'
I mean, most of the code that I'd ever work on would be in English, no matter which country I'm living in. Most of the resources, documentation, tutorials are in English. Plus, if you think algorithmically, the logical code flow closely resembles constructs in English language. How could I possibly code without knowing English?
Go home Tim, you're drunk!

Was once interviewing for Ops support roles looking after multiple websites wrote in java, rails, php with some rest apis, apache, varnish and more....
We were also starting moving towards automation and devops practices so we needed to expand...
We have a great CV from someone who had all of the technologies and chef mentioned on their CV so we were positive....
Invited to interview and something wasn't right..... I dropped a "so you mentioned a few different languages on your CV, can you talk me though some of the applications you've looked after and what languages they were written in, etc?"
His reply.. "yes I looked after a lot of applications and helped people with them in English"
Me "oh.. Okay.... So those apps which software languages were they... You mentioned things like Java and Php and automation tech like chef?"
Him "well yes they were all sorts of things but I predominantly looked after the apps that were wrote in English... Didn't deal with any wrote in java or chef... Just English"
Me ".... Does anyone else have any questions?"
Safe to say we didn't offer him the job.... -
The actual struggle of working in a non-english team who prefers to keep their variables named in our native language. Currently trying to think of a better way to phrase 'sjaafoerAerend' as dropping any part of it makes it more vague.
Is this a thing in asian countries as well? I'm guessing it's more common to just stick to english naming there.
I figure it's safe to assume that anyone who will see the code are going to be proficient in english. If they aren't, natively named variables isn't going to make a difference. Hell I even write my personal reminder comments in english.4 -

Non english-native devs - when you work with foreign customers, do they insist on using your name as it is pronounced in your country, or do they prefer to use English substitutes?
I mean - I'm from Poland. We have a call with a guy from France and he goes on and calls everyone as it is in Polish, but sometimes I know it would be easier for him to go for English names (we can translate them easily, no one would be offended, I guess)
Is it the case in your work? :v19 -
Since day 1, I've been eager in learning everything dev-related in English, and as it, I've focused on thinking, writing, shitting and eating english for a basis.
Now, where I work, I say, our country native language it's Spanish, but I feel bad whenever they tell me I must write everything in Spanish (code included). Maybe I'm overreacting or something.
So, here's my question for you, devs, when you're working on a coding-related project, should it be on English or not?3 -

Welp, who wants to see my first website? tiny.cc/copo
It was made almost entirely during english class, for blocked games. It's the most hits I've ever got one a site I've made. But the best part? I achieved my goal: respect from the teachers. And why did they respect me? *Because it got blocked*. Yup, across the entire county (our county is one of the top five in the USA for schools I believe). We, as the students, found a way around the teacher's technological control, and finally got some technological freedom. Just a small story.
P.S. not named by me, and sorry bout that JS redirect. I redesigned it while I was supposed to be writing about the theme but the original is couchpotato not cppremium. I can't change it now but I'll change it later. I trust you guys know how to stop it without me changing it though :)8 -

The fact that the world of technology and programming is entirely built on English temrinology irritates me.

I was thinking about what the correct term is for the "." symbol at the end of sentences. Is it dot, point or period?
Turns out it is period, but I also learned that in British English it’s called full stop, which I find very funny 😂. It sounds like something that one would scream in an emergency. FULL STOP!
Anyway, in German there is only one word for dot, point, period and full stop.90 -
While writing your codes, have you ever noticed that all the programming languages you've ever come across are actually... English?
Has any of you ever coded in non-English (and non-symbolic, like ook, brainfuck, whitespace et al) language?21 -

Everytime there's a bug for me, being English is the problem.
In the US, the spelling color is used to match the spelling of the word's Latin etymon, and to make all derivatives consistent (colorimeter, colorize, colorless, etc). Elsewhere in the English-speaking world, the spelling colour has been retained1 -
Fuck I hate when my brain remembers the wrong keyword! Just spent way too long trying to figure out why my regex wasn’t working! I remember RegEx.check(str) tests for a match and returns a Boolean. The docs say RegEx.test(str) checks for a match and returns a Boolean! Dammed cinnamons! English is my native language I swear.2

Any Irish people here?
I’m planning to move to Ireland in the next six months, probably somewhere near cork.
Currently I’m living in Switzerland but I’m actually german.
However, I have two major concerns:
1) my English is good but not that good. It’s probably a bit better than the German average but still far from fluent. I think in the first months it might be difficult to communicate in English all day long in the office.
Did you have any coworkers or friends who moved there from a non-native English speaking country? How did they do? Did the company have problems with being patient with those people?
2) how hard is it to find a job as a java developer with 7+y experience considering #1?
Bonus question: what do you guys actually think about Germans, am I welcome? :)12 -
Anyone else notice themselves simplifying their English text / conversations (typed or verbal) because they've been doing code for so many years?
I barely even English anymore cuz code is more expressive so I think in it's grammar;2 -
I am currently lost in translation.
Damn, standardization are important.
I am working on integration of biggest payment company in Japan. Their technical guys doesnt know much Emglish.
Their documention of APIs were literally translated into english without any standardization by their dev guys.
And now I am trying to map what they mean in standard terms.

Not really a rant, but I love Android!
Go to Settings -> Language and Input -> Language, and change it to English (UK), the answers given by Google assistant will have a British accent. Change it to English (India), Google assistant will have an Indian accent, and the same thing applies for English (Australia) and obviously English (US).
Perfect example of phone adapting to the user!4 -

Why aren't there more programming languages out there that aren't derived from English?
We're in the age of universal UTF-8 support, if it was meant to be then it should be happening now.
+ sarcasm
I mean, we should be more inclusive and allow other flavours of JavaScript that aren't based on English across browser, right? Otherwise that would mean that English is the master language of the web.
- sarcasm5 -
How much of the programming world is in English? I as an English speaker don't have a language barrier. Which is fortunate for me because I would have to stop every 5 minutes anytime I needed an "ñ" . But what's it like of others?12

So, today I saw another job offer, but this one says things like "aggressive compensation" and "advanced English required".
The offer itself was *NOT* In English.
It does not speaks highly of a company that they had to resort to recruit in a language that is not the one they want.
And that they are afraid of numbers. -
How do you know ML and AI has gone too far? You rely on the algorithm instead of the obvious.
Google will translate comments, etc. At times when you click on an English video to language around your location. This is so obvious, if I didn't understand English if would not have clicked on the video!!

I regularly get added by unknown people on telegram. Now, sometimes they're real people asking you to rate some hotels or put smth in a shopping basket in a specific webshop.
It's my hobby to figure out what their scam is. (I think just not paying, how would they do that anyway).
Also, you've bots. Doing acquisition and then ask you to contact them on a different number. I do this. Yolo. For fun.
But now, there's a Chinese girl that added me and I can't figure out if she's a bot or real. She did ask me to contact on a different number - like bot.. But she goes to sleep on Hong Kong timezones and I've let her tell me what was in a youtube video. She described well. Still, I don't trust.
She does have some inconsistenties in dot usage at end of sentence and stuff.
English, quite well but I think she uses translator if she's real. She said it's not her native language.
It drives me totally crazy not being able to figure out.
What are more ways to check if AI?23 -

Looking for help for my daughter who is an American exchange student in Germany struggling to learn to code Java in a classroom that only speaks German. She is using Java-Editor for her assignments but doesn’t know how to translate English-based tutorials into German. Like, what’s the German word for “properties” for finding the properties tab in the UI? That sort of thing. Is there an English to German glossary, or better yet a way to switch the UI to English?
I don’t speak German but I do code, so trying to help her is difficult.
Thanks for any help.6 -

Hey! Here's my problem: I am a german guy with pretty fluent english. When I will be done with my bachelor's (or master's, depending on my preference in 3 years) degree, I've decided I'd like to live/work in america; if that is at least somewhat easily possible. Ofc I'd have to get someone to hire me first, but I'll probably find at least something (what kind of company would be best? something like google? a start up?)
I tried googling how to become a citizen, how to work, how to live in america etc. but it's just so many different requirements and statuses and rules and forms that I would have to spend a very large amount of time, which might be wasted. So I thought I'd ask you guy's whether it's possible. /r/america (or similar, it was quite some time ago) didn't respond to my questions.
What do I need to know? What do I need to own? What do I need in terms of skills? What would help my chances? How long does this normally take? Is being a white male german a benefit? How much? Could I stay there permanently or would it be a stay-as-long-as-you-have-a-job sort of scenario?What kinds of precautions can I take?
Is it advisable to go there? If not, what are good english-speaking alternatives? What are non-english alternatives (e.g. I thought about sweden; they seem to have great laws, people, internet, scenery)?3 -

I know it a strange thing to ask but I need help with English grammar ( I am not a English native)
I am doing an assignment on context free grammar program.
What the program need to do it "Produce a grammar tree based on the rule"
For example a sentence "Jame sat.", It will need to produce a grammar tree like this.
S
_____|___
NP VP
| |
N V
| |
holmes sat
The only thing I need to do it give a grammar rule to the program like this
S -> NP VP
NP -> N | Det N
VP -> V | NP
What the above rule said is that the sentence is composed of Noun Phrase and Verb Phrase and Noun Phrase is either is a Noun or a determiner and Noun.
Now here is the meat of the question.
I am having trouble parsing a grammar tree for this sentence "She never said a word until we were at the door here"
I have provided my grammar rule below. I think I forget to add some grammar rule or some of my grammar rule are incorrect. I am not a native English speaker so I am having trouble on it.
The search engine have fail me (I have look up various grammar tree) so I am asking for help on devrant. Grammar nazi are warmly welcome :)
S -> NP VP | S Conj VP | S Conj S
NP -> N | Det NP | N PP | Adj N | Det Adj N | Det N
PP | Det NOM | Det N PP
VP -> V | V NP | V NP PP | V PP | V NP PP Adv
VP -> Adv V NP | VP PP | VP AVP | V PP PP | V
ADJP
PP -> P NP
AVP -> Adv | Adv Adj | Adv AVP
NOM -> Adj Adj N | Adj N | Adj NP
ADJP -> Adj | Adj PP
**I am not sure about these two clause below**
VP -> V | Adv
NP -> Adj Adj N22 -
