When I'm on Windows, I miss Linux sometimes
When I'm on Linux, I miss Windows sometimes
When I'm on mac, I wonder why this isn't Linux instead25 -
In a Backend API team, should the product owner know about all the flows that our APIs are used for, as in, should the product owner be the source of truth for this? Obviously it is best for engineers to know this information, but is it the POs responsibility to know this?2

My devrant went Japanese suddenly, well both English and Japanese, happen to anyone else? Is it some promo?16

Do you ever feel your job is too demanding compared to other software engineering jobs?
I've worked in two companies for now.
First company, Kotlin microservices and we had QAs, didn't have to write a lot of tech specs and no post mortem or on call at all (not yet atleast), it was just talk to PO, he tells the business requirement, we work together to make tickets, no legacy code so was easy to know what to do for tech, no monolith to handle or anything, much easier, just code and meetings.
Current job is meetings with PO telling you what he wants, have to write a full on tech spec and also know business requirements and product knowledge as the current PO doesn't know anything about how the products work, writing huge tech specs, communicating on requests sent my clients on slack, pretty much always firefighting, the system is so fragile and legacy, coding is actually less its mostly spending hours finding out how this shittt legacy flows work (no docs) , PO pretty much does fuck all, just wants meetings and wants us to do very very stupid tedious low impacts projects. This bundled with oncall and onpoint and the absolute sheer amount of incidents our team is involved in (on average we have 4 a week LOL, varying size but they're all very annoying) and the overtime oncall benefit is so bad too, if you do get paged out of hours, you just get that hour back during work hours. In other companies like friends, you get paid for the whole time you're oncall, whether you get paged or not. I can't go out anywhere on weekends or anywhere at all during on call in case I get paged, which happens a lot. Its a cluster of a mess. This bundled with manager stoll not wanting to promote me to IC3 despite all I've done so far.
My question is, is this more normal than I think it is? Is this just how crap our career can be? Mind you I'm in the UK so not getting those mind boggling US wages sadly either. Have US colleagues in same team doing same job but obviously getting more11 -
Me post a lot of investigation in a slack thread and come to a conclusion
20 mins later engineers in thread post things like they didn't read anything I wrote and come to same conclusion, but involve other parties AGAIN making us all look dumb
Why do they just ignore what I wrote, literally linked the same splunk dashboards and same error numbers that I did. I don't get it.
Why should I care? I hoped I could use this as a way to convince manager once again that I do the things he asks me to, but it seems it's all useless.
Really want a new job but tough times, should be happy I even have a job I guess -
Becoming a real piece of shit.
When a friend who has no responsibilities and no costs gets a higher paid dev job than I've ever wanted, in an area with a lower CoL.
A normal decent human being would be happy for his friend. I however am not. Guess I deserve what happens2 -
Watching ex uni classfellows becoming senior and getting promos while being stuck non senior is depressing.
Happy for them but sad that I haven't been promoted5 -
I'm almost four years work experience and I'm still not a senior engineer.
Feeling quite sad, idk what I'm lacking. I do interviews and they give offers but say I'm not senior yet so take this role instead and I obviously say no to that (salary is even lower than current)9 -
Seems no matter how much I earn I'm always fucked for money. Guess I'm shit financially, even though I live in the worst area in the worst flat8
-
Another company another offer downplayed from role I wanted. tbh probably implies I'm def not to that level yet haha but the feedback seemed to have negatives when I believe I gave examples to imply the reverse. Either way another offer refused I guess. Got a good raise which makes things better I guess.

Kinda wish when writing a comment this app didn't take the whole screen, sometimes would like to read OG post as I type4

Co own a service with another team.
Service is something me or my team have hardly worked on. Other team have far more knowledge on it. There is no active development that we do on it so no opportunity to really learn on it.
Some months back was involved in migrating the tests of this service to run on another system. I was unsuccessful and asked this other team a lot for help. This was just migrating, nothing to make you more familiar with code etc but just seeing the config and wondering what to change. The CID team then said we could temporarily add this service to use old system for builds.
Now get request from CID team they're diagnosing the issue for the service and that if they need help if we'd be able to help. I said other team better as they understand better. Manager of other team then replies with big message tagging my manager and PO and frankly says why the fuck am I forwarding this to other team, we should learn the service too as co owned. While I get their point, shouldn't stop assisting another team for the sake of knowledge transfer, should have other dedicated sessions for that.
Would be open to hear thoughts, is she in the right here? Frankly we already own loads of other stuff and never have time to look at this service that somehow the team owns4 -
Would you take an offer for a position that you got lowballed on i.e. they'll pay less than promised (because they say you're a little lower than the level we want) which is still more than your current but the company is less stable (startup) and also has a really bad Glassdoor rating?10
-
Can't believe I miss my old job. Pay more here but works so much more it's crazy, and issues just never die, pages keep happening, too many clients calling our APIs and everything is spaghetti. I don't think my manager will ever promote my as it's tough to perform tbh (atleast for me).

What's everyone second source of income?
Curious on how you started and money per month of average for it. Feel I should start working towards it in case of layoffs or just need of extra money.
Is freelancing on upwork worth it?15 -
Well, our board dedicated to On call has so many tickets that given the rate our team is going, it'll take 30+ years to finish them all.
Oh and it keeps growing -
I've been applying to jobs in Canada while living in the UK. I'm employed here and trying to move, I'm also a UK national. However, my CV is instantly getting rejected by all companies. I'm not sure if my CV sucks or I should be doing some other step before applying for jobs in Canada from abroad. Am I missing something obvious and being quite dumb here?6

We recently had an error in legacy systems about a user trying to find photographers in Virginia but somehow it shows photographers in Mexico. Apparently it's because both Mexico and Virginia have the same zip code XD guess whatever it uses to search stuff didn't think the company would be used past the US.10

I've been asking recruiters I'd only consider roles for £95k+. I have 3 YoE. Am I being greedy? (In London).15

Easily Hackathon,
About 2.5 days so 60 hours ish. Not worth, didn't win and company gets free code plus was a charity code for good event so rather they got charity brownie points and I'm sure they couldn't care less about charities. They were a bank. Complete waste honestly, food wasn't even good and was cold. -
Company upper management was asked of any plans for supporting businesses in the metaverse.
They said they want to focus on bussiness in the real world.
Absolute chads.4 -
Does wanting to leave a company simply because of legacy code with no documentation and too much work a bit reason? I guess it probably is as anywhere could have the same thing :) Maybe management would be better suited for me, time to take courses8
-
Imagine you're in a company, one year in now. You've tried your best to amass as much knowledge of legacy services as you can (specially given no documentation) and you think you've done the best you can.
Now imagine your manager is upset that you haven't gotten as much domain knowledge as an engineer who's been in the team for five years now. Then also imagine that your manager whenever asked about specific product or tech or any knowledge on a service just keep tagging the 5 year engineer. If he ever gives an update in slack on any incident, he doesn't read what everyone has written in the channel so far, but invites the team on a call, and asks them to verbally tell him what to write as an update so as to show he actually understands it all and is showing leadership. What do you do?
Also I've read a good manager let's his team self function without any micromanaging but I feel this is literally hypocritical (lack of knowledge comparison) and useless of him to essentially making no decisions or understanding anything without pointing fingers. What would you all do about this kind of manager, or am I just inexperienced and maybe not seeing what he's actually doing and contributing. -
Be me
Have a company wide incident happen during on call
Say you're rolling back a change in a service that might have been the cause
Have someone laugh and say that change was just a new endpoint and completely unrelated
Be embarrassed
Have a senior director point out the code change that was the issue
Embarrass yourself in front of the entire company (it impacted everyone)
But hey atleast it wasn't my change8 -
I've been sleeping through midnight pages.
How do ya all manage to wake up for pages? I have my phone on full volume at night and I still sleep through them4
