Her: What do you do?
Me: I'm writing my thesis on bringing AI to smartphones.
Her: I think AI is terrible!
Me: oh, you are an engineer too?
Her: No
Me: oh, you've studied economics and or ethics and are worried about its implications on society?
Her: No, but have you?
Me: I have a degree in economics, an MBA and an now about to get my BSc in CS.
Her: well, regardless I still think it's terrible.
Me: well in that case how about you shove your unfounded opinion where the sun don't shine!18 -
Do devs really fight or do we just mildly assert differing opinions then ignore each other for extended periods of time?3
-
Hai devRant! Working on the privacy app and want opinions on the page for details on specific apps (as in, applications so web/app/mobile or even embedded?!).
Yeah I know that the aligning is deffo not perfect but hey, gotta start somewhere :). Detail: everything you see here (the content and actually also the icon path) is rendered from the database already.
Tips/opinions?45 -
So yesterday was a regular old day where I came into the office and began my work. My office mate that sits next to me happens to be having an issue with her batch script. It wasn't running correctly so she had decided to call in IT and have them take a look at it. What she was trying to do was process some images through a dedicated super-computer located on site.
So as you can imagine with both of them standing right next to me it was hard not to listen in on their conversation. The IT guy decided to go through a barrage of different troubleshooting methods to figure out what was happening with her script. And soon enough they discovered what was wrong. It happened to be an issue with how Windows decides to deal with new line characters. FYI it looks like this shit "\n \r"
The fucking \r looked like a directory to Linux. So it would squeal to a halt every single time she tried to run.
How this happened was due to her using notepad to edit her batch file.
At this point, I made a comment about her use of Notepad.
"Oh, you're using notepad? I've had similar issues like this in the past when I've used notepad. I really hate notepad." I said with a slight chuckle.
And that was pretty much the end of our encounters. However, at the end of the day, she decided to speak up about this.
"I don't appreciate you making comments about my use of Notepad. That was a form of microaggression towards me, and I don't want you to do it again."
Completely taken aback I replied.
"I'm sorry you took it that way, it was a joke and wasn't meant to be taken personally."
"Well, your intent does not change impact. And by the way, I take pride in my code and scripting. I don't need your commentary about my code nor your micro-aggressions." She said in a huff.
"Well again, I'm sorry you feel that way," I replied back
*I'd like to say that this situation is loosely paraphrased, but the essence of what happened is still there.
At this point, this is what I have to say about this situation. Why the FUCKING FUCK are you using notepad to program anything. There ARE A SHIT TON of differing programs that are available for your use and you decide to use fucking notepad?!?! $%&*@#$^
You could use notepad++, you could use Sublime, you could use every-fucking-thing except Notepad!!! If anything I think I had every right to make a comment about your stupid use of notepad. And darling, your script not working was well deserved, I hope you run into more errors like this because you deserve nothing less for your arrogance. So you can take your opinions and shove them up your fat-ass because at the end of the day I don't give a FUCK about your opinions on my micro-aggressions that you're spouting off about.
I suggest the next time you feel attacked about your code perhaps you should take a cold hard look at yourself before thinking that I'm the one that is the FUCKING problem.17 -
Easy:
Everyone (or basically everyone) else is an NPC and is therefore irrelevant. Their opinions do not matter.16 -
Unpopular dev opinion:
I like ending lines of code with semicolons. It helps add structure and organization. My code feels naked without them. After learning to code in JavaScript and Java, it's force of habit to put them, and python's lack of them is one of the reasons I hate it's syntax
Maybe I'm old fashioned. All the hipster languages either make semicolons optional or usually actively discourage them
Idk I like them though13 -
A: Can you tell me your opinion about this? Please, be honest.
Me: Ok, I think you could do it in a different way, but let's talk about what you did and see how to make it better...
A: I don't think so, I think this is the best way to do it.
Me: Oh, OK.
A: Why are you always complaining about my job?
Me: Well, you just asked me, and I work on this too, so I thought...
A: I don't think you're collaborative enough with me!
Me [walking away]: Oh, OK...6 -
I'm working on my author website and I really suck at designing. So, can you give me your opinions? I can take honesty, even if it's harsh.
So, ugly or decent? What do you think?52 -
Worst part of being a dev?
The last 10% of a project.
Being in beta, gathering feed back, sorting through opinions and user preferences. All that takes forever compared to the first 90%.

Client: “I’m sorry I just don’t understand the issue with the contract?
You said logging into Facebook was easy, what’s the issue with feature X (= complex graph API queries based on opinions and sentiment) and displaying images and videos, it’s the same thing!!!”
... no sir, it is NOT2 -
I wonder. What makes people so offensive about their opinions?
"How the f can you use Windows?"
"I can't believe you use android..."
"What an idiot he uses tabs..."
I don't get it... respect subjectivity?10 -
Is it working..?
...
I think it's working! ^~^
Tell me if this looks correct, I'm trying to mimic the linux CD command in my game:23 -
Friend: "You are very opinionated about mobile apps aren't you?"
Me: "Yeah, but I have the right opinions"1 -
As a CS student, where should I invest my time between these options ?
- Get a higher GPA
- Invest in personal project
- Contribute to open source project
- Have a part-time internship during school
- Take time for myself
I would like to have opinions based on your personal experiences !28 -
Instead of making business cards, I bought small index cards. The first time ‘round, I carefully taped four or five together with chalkboard tape and then wrote on them with gold pen. Now I’m just using the index cards and black pen since the reaction to that in person’s been positive. What do you guys think? Are people just humoring me in person?20

DO NOT be afraid to argue with people. It doesnt matter who they are. Senior engineers, tech leads, delivery managers, if you know something is wrong make it heard. I made a point of telling my Project Manager that the current project is the worst ive ever seen. The technology is awful and we all hate the development. They need to know this stuff. And if they come to you with a deadline that you dont think you can make, say it then and there. Then they cant come back and say why isnt this done. Basically dont just do as youre told. If we needed that we would get robots to do our job. We need people who think and have opinions and make those opinions heard at the appropriate level.2
-
It will never stop happening... people who don't know shit about code, assuming some conclusion and giving their opinions on software.3
-
I hope this is not illegal content, as I don't want to "Advertise" here but would like to share my first game on Steam with the community, as I am really proud of it.
There's a free playtest soon and dev opinions are much appreciated! Let me know guys what you think. https://store.steampowered.com/app/...14 -
Clients that barely can turn on their computer that have opinions on how much complexity and time is involved developing X feature. I'm no rage-o-holic, but that is one of those rare things that make me want to stab someone in the face.

I'm loving my new job. Not for the salary or perks. Just for the simple fact that my developing opinions it's been taking in consideration!1

Cicada 3301.
Does anyone of you know about it?
If you are, I would like to hear your opinions.

What kind of developer are you and what is your opinion on other development areas?
Me: Junior dev, oriented towards full stack and Android(with a sysadmin background):
-Low-level(kernel development, embedded, drivers, operating systems, reverse engineers)- Badass, I wish I could do that.
-Mobile apps- awesome but too high level sometimes.
-Full stack/Backend- awesome.
-Web Frontend- fuck HTML+CSS. JS is cool I guess.
-Enterprise applications(e.g SAP) Pajeet, my son.
-Malware development- Holy shit that is awesome.
-Video Game development- was my dream since childhood.
-Desktop apps- No opinion.4 -

Functional programming vs object oriented programming.
I don't believe one can replace the other I just want to know some other people's opinions.40 -
So I' working on a personal blog/site, but I'm a terrible designer. Any suggestions and/or opinions would be greatly appreciated!10

New PM thinks it's a great idea to start micromanaging my team's (private) repo names. Can't wait to hear his opinions on our class and variable names! 😭3

These are the things that finally finally helped me stick to learning programming.
Hello world! This is my first story on devrant and I would like to share how I finally overcame the barriers that had always prevent me from learning programming in a more serious and structured way.
I know my way around linux, had some experience with BASIC many years ago and have more than basic notions of cryptography... however I never got myself to learn programming in such a way that I could write an app or interact with an API. Until now.
I have advanced more than ever before and I believe it might be thanks to these aspects:
1. C#
I have always had struggles with languages that were too compact or used many exotic or cryptic expressions. However I have found C# to be much more readable and easier to understand.
2. Visual Studio
My previous attempts at learning programming were without an IDE. Little did I know what I was missing!
For example when I tried learning python on Debian, I almost went crazy executing programs and trying to find the compile errors in a standard text editor.
Intellisense has been live changing as it allows me to detect errors almost immediately and also to experiment. I'm not afraid to try things out as I know the IDE will point out any errors.
3. .NET library and huge amounts of documentation
It was really really nice to find out how many well documented classes I had available to make my learning process much easier, not having to worry about the little details and instead being able to focus on my program's logic.
4. Strong typing
Call me weird, but I believe that restricting implicit conversions has helped learn more about objects, their types and how they relate to each other.
I guess I should be called a C# fanboy at this point, but I owe it to that language to be where I'm now, writing my first apps.
I also know very very little about other languages and would love to hear if you know about languages that provide a similar experience.
Also, what has helped you when you first started out?
Thanks!!5 -
I'd love it if the number of ++ s a rant has, to only be shown after you either ++ the rant or open it. thing is, I found my self scrolling through my algo feed and looking at the ++ count before the post itself. I was judging the post by the number of ++s it has. which made me realize that I skipped a couple of posts that I didn't read and that I could've liked.
what do you guys think about this?12 -
So apparently they're thinking of adding a lightweight graphics library to the c++ spec - opinions?5
-
Whosoever developed this app, hats off to them.
An app where devs can share their opinions and everything.5 -
Bind's unpopular opinions, chapter #fuckyou:
Linux for server, windows for desktop.
Tune in for the next episode where we fight off angery linux fanboys6 -
Sooo there is a website out there that teaches you how to code and rewards you by undressing a girl after you complete each task successfully.
Not going to endorse them here but I have really really mixed feelings about that.
Opinions?11 -
Someone recently told me that learning command line is pointless for a developer today, the world has moved towards GUIs for a reason and there is no point in making your dev life harder.
Opinions?25 -
So... you are the architect, a senior developer, with no experience in maven.
I am a middle developer with a long experience in maven.
WHY THE HELL YOU DON'T LISTEN TO ME!!!
I am open to confrontation but dude... your thoughts and opinions are not automatically orders for me!!! -
I'm so done with all the covid talk.
Its all that's ever talked about and you don't get a break.
As if it wasn't bad enough to have that one friend who constantly has to remind everyone how politically educated he is, and how much he hates the neo[whatever the fuck], now he has to remind everyone about his opinions on the vaccine.
No one fucking asked, shut the fuck up.
Your opinions do not matter.1 -

Discussion Thread.
With all the frameworks and libraries available and game engines to develop games, its now easier than ever to build stuff.
With this in mind, do you think its necessary to have a core knowledge of how stuff work under the hood? Or is it okay to build upon and develop new stuffs on the foundations available today?5 -
Dear [not so senior] software engineer:
Your strong opinions do NOT directly correlate nor contribute to your ability to influence and inspire others.
Be a mediating and conciliating force in your team.8 -
Why is the internet such a toxic place... You voice your personal opinion and instantly have people who believe they are 'better' than you call you a stupid consumer because they use something that others may not care for.
Fuck me people, why can't we just have opinions and respect each other, it's not that fucking hard!7 -
So I have this idea of a potentially amazing idea but I'm so conflicted as to whether or not it is a good idea (I know it will probably never happen) but it's really hard to put it in writing for people's opinions and input on it...
Anyone else have these moments?7 -
I hold the stance that the best development tools are the ones with enough novice tolerance and no tendency to stay on contributors' way. The worst tools will make you adopt opinions that serve to make more harm than good, be it on the communicative side of things or codebase.
-
These days now, my boss trusts me so much and takes my opinions and suggestions and goes ahead with those. Not to mention so lenient with me regarding work times since I had the baby. I’m melting thinking about her.2
-
I'm thinking about starting my own blog, where I can post my research and/or opinions on...
Though my private projects have a bad reputation I still think I might try one again and see if it works6 -
Tl;Dr: I think react is ugly.
Just cloned a developer git for a certain API and I was going through the application code to get a feel around. I literally said out loud "eww" when I saw the code for the views. Nothing about the pros and cons of the framework, I just think it's hideous. Thoughts from react developers welcome8 -
😔this weekend should be fun, I... I need to... well you see... I need to create a woocommerce site despite my better judgments and opinions on the subject.
God, if you are listening.. well reading, please have mercy on my soul.rant suicide is forecasted. wordpress the things we do fuck my life woocommerce why did i agree to this5 -
So opinions: should a software engineer get certifications? I mean, to me they seem like pointless wastes of money, but my coworkers don't seem to think so. I design and write code, why do I need MCSD or whatever? Follow up, if you feel they are useful: which ones and why?4
-
I'm pretty sure some users only browse StackOverflow looking for questions to flag as "Not Constructive" or "Opinion Based". Some of the best programming discussions I've read have been in the answers and comments to closed questions, so get over it, happiness haters! Sometimes I want to hear people's opinions.3
-
Along with weekly rant topics, devRant should have weekly polls where you create a poll on opinionated questions like "bash or zsh?". Devs would upvote one & post a rant why they prefer one over the other.
With lots of devs here, the opinions of experienced devs would really help young buds. @dfox3 -
What do you guys think about Visual Studio Code?
I personally like it, just wondering your opinions.11 -
To be able to convince an offering manager that his / her opinions don't always match what our customers want
-
I wish people expressed more nuance in their opinions. However, online social networks are often not built to encourage nuance, and I feel like most people take nuance for a lack of self-confidence which they take in turn for a lack of authority.11

I'm going to attend a free 4-day course about Flutter at my University starting next week, never really got into mobile dev before but since it's free it may be interesting.
What do you think about Flutter, is it worth learning it?2 -
TABS OR SPACES?
It doesn't matter what you use, but use the ome you can stand with.
DONT FUCKING EVER BULLY ONE BECAUSE HE'S NOT USING YOUR "STANDARD"
Try to have some good discussion why you should use tabs or spaces and let other opinions matter. They may have some good reason for it.
PS I'm using spaces because it wont fuck up my Code if i change the OS (Windows<->Linux Server)5 -
Returning moron here, missed ya guys.
Now, idk if this qualifies as politics but i guess it does have something to do with tech/privacy/hacking.
Free Julian Assange?
Surprised no one is talking about this honestly. @linuxxx any opinions?28 -
My teacher showed some Mr. Robot episodes on lesson. I think it's pretty good. What are your opinions about it? Should I start to watch it?4
-
I am seeing a trend on here, where people dismiss a technology based upon their experience that they cannot use it first try, even though they clearly lack experience or knowledge about the proper usage.
Also people seemingly tend to imply self explanatory at various topics ranging from relatable broadly known experiences to small nieche opinions.
How is that? Since when do people, especially programmers, think they do not need to explain their viewpoint, even though there is not a clear indicator as to why? Stating an opinion without any backup to the claim is just a void call in the wind. Of course i know that user X thinks that Y is his or her opinion. But what good does it do when i can't relate / understand or discuss this opinion?3 -
I'm thinking about making an linkidin account. I'm mostly a privacy centered person so I don't have any social media. Should I do it because it can maybe help me in my career? I'm currently at my first junior dev job.
Love to hear your opinions.3 -
I have started doing one hour coding challenges... I try to make small projects in that time.. I have felt improvement in my programming and thinking skills but I wanna know your opinions if I am doing the right thing for the long run?
language: python, arcade library.8 -
Looking for platform specific language options for a new project at work and reading articles from well known sources.
If you start your article with something like, "when I think of a good programming language, I think of JavaScript", I'm going to punch out of your shitty opinion faster than an async function.
When you're trying to convey an unbiased message you generally don't start with, "I'm an absolute shill for {language}".
What the fuck happened to journalistic integrity?7 -
My team lead thinks using a double Not operator in javascript is too confusing and not readable.
Opinions?23 -
Have you worked with GraphQL? Saw it for the first time and it looks like a pretty good tool for working with APIs, to me. I am excited to read your opinions about GraphQL.23

Just put my first 'big' personal project on GitHub to get advice, feedback, and opinions.
I don't know why I'm feeling so nervous about the project being seen and judged by anyone on github6 -
I would have more role models in web if their Twitter accounts weren't semi dedicated to pushing their political opinions.1

At the risk of starting a war, what are folks opinions on in-line comments?
Personally, I'm against them. Self documenting code for the what, SCM for the why.
Comments can get out of date if not maintained; code cannot lie.9 -
Safari is slowly becoming the new Internet Explorer.
I'm loosing count over how many javascript workarounds i need to make for that abomination.5 -
A friend suggested that I'd start learning a scriptable language like Ruby, Python or JavaScript instead of beginning with HTML and CSS, until I feel comfortable with programming.
I want to be a web developer and Ive learned some HTML.
So, any opinions?9 -
Hi all,
I want to get advice about a VPN Service,
Currently NordVPN giving away 75% discount for 3 years subscription which costs $107.55,
Any of you have experience with their service?
Need reviews or opinions25 -
So.. I'm doing this 2 week long internship at a pretty big corporation that was looking for high school students for a security training program, and they're having us utilize Splunk (which I've heard about, but never used). Any opinions and/or tips on this tool? :)1
-
I just don't like copy-pasting the code. can I become a good programmer?
please give honest opinions in the comments.11 -
What’s your opinions on AWS, Azure, and whatever googles version is called. I’m curious and I’m asking because I don’t really know a lot of details. I just know they host stuff and make some stuff easier.26

Bash on Windows is incoming soon! As a dual boot win10/Ubuntu user I am pretty psyched. Curious as to what you all think, and opinions from insider program participants.
I just hope it isn't half-assed.4 -
Has anyone here considered going off grid? Im dreaming of buying a plot somewhere in Chile and building an off grid home. Im a remote worker and plan to remain being one.
(Off grid meaning generating your own electricity, 'harvesting' rain water and growing some greens)
Im asking to get advice and opinions2 -
Elixir/Phoenix developers, what are your opinions on Ruby/Rails and vice-versa?
(Not trying to start a war here 😅, just some heathy discussion)3 -
PHP vs Node.js
Please give your valuable opinions as I am want to learn backend as soon as possible.
Which one is best for backend purpose?20 -
I came across this blog (I guess) that's mostly critique about the security of major open source projects. The author claims to be a security researcher.
At least some of the claims seem to have merit, but how much? Opinions?

Prospects of AI developments making software developers obsolete.
Thoughts, opinions and quibbles.1 -
I can't tell if I'm in majority or minority on hating vim. I just use nano for CLI editing and some better GUI editor with, well, GUI.
Opinions? Reasons?3 -
I love exceptions - ANSI C with exceptions - that would be perfect for me.
I know that there are different opinions out there... I can’t understand why they haven’t implemented exceptions into Go. I have read the article why they didn’t but for me... exceptions are a GREAT language concept!!!!3 -
Can someone recommend me a Linux distro with good hardware integration and stability for my laptop?11

I wouldn't have a problem with opinionated tools
Unfortunately, their opinions tend to be retarded1 -
What do you think of Allo? I deeply respect devRant community members opinions.
I am going to give it a whirl this weekend.6 -
Warnings are design errors.

I think is better to paste the post here, but it doesn't allow MD :(
Wanna hear your opinions.
Fuck warnings.13 -
Hello guys, I need your help.
Recently we purchased new property for our company. And we are about to start working there in few days.
And now we are searching quotes to stick on wall there.
Can you guys help me with this?
Please suggest me some quotes.16 -
Ok let's get our hate and love out for the 3 main OS types, tell us why you hate or love each of them.
Windows: I hate its lack of customisation, colours and wallpapers only go so far, and how fucking bloated it is and how little you can do about it.
Linux: it's open, free, and pretty much a sandbox for changes and is lightweight, plus if you don't like something about it, remove it, whats not to love!
MacOS: I love it because it just works and could also run on a potato (yeah I said it, fight me) and it's just a very good looking is with fluid animations and simplicity.
Now, don't be hating on people's opinions here so keep it civil :-P13 -
What do people here use for blogging and hosting? Everything I can find from searching suggests self-hosted Wordpress, but I am cautious because of its reputation in the dev world and since all the guides I have found so far are directed at non-coders. Thanks in advance for any opinions 😊8
-
Anyone else going to get one of the new pixel phones as well?
If so, why?
Please no negativity just want other peoples opinions on the pixel 2 :-)8 -
I got many reasons to hate my old Dell Studio-1557, but if there is one thing I love about it, it is its keyboard. I don't have much technical keyboard knowledge, but it's just comfortable for me. Wide keys and short keystrokes, no gaps between them (keys are actually sloped on the edge and fit together) and most importantly, no num pad.
So now that i feel it needs to be retired after 9 yrs of loyalty, i can't find a successor for it that have my old Studio's keyboard-feel. Most of laptops in the market have small keys with orthogonal edges and lots of space wasted as gaps between them (like new Dells), a useless (for me) num pad and worst of all, small miniature arrow keys (like thinkPad) and other navigations seems to be new designers fashion.
I'd be glad if some one introduce me a laptop with a similar keyboard to mine (in the picture)
Or what do you propose, should i care about the keyboard at all? are these new designs easy to take up with? wouldn't i suffer a keyboardalgia?
edit: no macs btw :)4 -
I gave a very small overview of the flutter sdk a whiiiile ago and I have been thinking about going back to it. Currently considering between 2 courses on udemy that are at a discount price. I love the idea of dart as a language and prefer declarative ui building over xml shittyness. I was an Android/ios development for 2 years and hated every minute of it, but really love the idea of building mobile apps.
What are your thoughts and considerations on this? Should I jump right in or just leave it asside? What are your success stories with flutter and what did you use to learn the framework besides the docs? How easy are things like state management and persistent storage with flutter compared to android and ios?
I will eventually make my own decission by building sample projects, but hearing from the community would be great.5 -
i am an unskilled pussy without strong opinions
sometimes you get conflicting feedback on code reviews from seniors
i'll do whatever you guys want (haven't encountered anything egregious enough that I do have a strong opinion on yet), but y'all may need to sort out how you want me to slice this cat4 -
Do we have any C# devs who have switched to Scala?
I've got a very sweet job offer... at a company that develops in Scala. On the one hand, I'm pretty pleased with my depth of C# knowledge, for a variety of reasons. And I've been targeting .Net shops in my job search.
They know Scala devs are rare, so they are aware they need to train new employees, which is nice. But I don't have strong opinions yet on whether this is a language I want to pivot to.
Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions/experiences?6 -
IDEs vs Text Editors? Wanted to get your opinions.
IDE- code suggestion(auto completion), easier to configure build options
Text editors- minimalistic and...?12 -
//Not a rant; Just asking for opinions
I'm trying to replicate this on a website. Should I go via the CSS route by making rounded squares or just place a bunch of images of each individual circle? Is there any pros or cons of doing either or? Or is it really all the same at the end? Thanks! 😅15 -
In a corporate world...apparently having open communication and sharing opinions is only allowed between ELDERS(bade log)😑1
-
Since we're all doing unpopular opinions lately: tabs and spaces are not only interchangeable, but is most readable when mixed on one line.
Instead of 4 spaces or one tab, try 2 spaces, 1 tab, and another space for good measure!3 -
Still not sold by OO, but I'm hook line and sinker for pharo/smalltalk.
It actually seems to share a lot of fundamentals with Lisp namely extremely tight syntax and live code reloading.
My opinions of a productive language being dependant on a specific paradigm might be changing in favour of the tooling supplied with a technology/language. -
a web developer job post ask for html/css/javascript php/asp.net
me: what are your opinions about that job post? 😀😀
IT friend: that's ridiculous! ! , they ask for being proficient in 5 programming languages. 😲😲

Just want to know how many other game developers there are on here...
Got an idea I want to get other Devs opinions on but would love to here some tips and opinions from other game devs!20 -
Been doing java for years now, and finally got to trying out an IDE. Been using VIM and notepad++ for ages, and tried Netbeans. It honestly frustrates me, is this where it's at, or is there something a bit more user friendly? Google yes I know, but Googles opinions are about as reliable as Bill Clinton around Monica Lewinski6

Any opinions/thoughts on Scaleway as a VPS provider? I'm thinking of trying their free offer for 500€ free credit until the end of the month.
Any warnings or caveats?

Hello Guys, I am in a dilemma whether I should update my Laptop to Windows 10 Fall Creator Update or not. Any honest opinions or recommendations from Devs?

Wat up guys. I want your opinions on how to deal with other devs who have less experience but arrogant enough to take advice or even basic instruction making the project take longer, e.g. insist on doing everything from scratch because libraries are too high level etc.
How do you guys end up not murdering these types of people?1 -
I have job interview next week! Do you have any advice that can help me? :) (position: FrontEnd Dev)9

How about ' What tech/framework/language do you trust will truly stand the test of time' ? Sorry if someone has already suggested this but I would love to see opinions.2

Recruiter: We are looking for a full-stack expert. You have taken multiple apps from conception to deployment, and have experience and opinions on the best technologies to use and why. You should be comfortable implementing new features from scratch, making changes to existing features and writing complex migrations on production data.
Dev: lol4 -
I'm thinking about getting a small "Hello, World!" tattoo on my wrist. Any opinions? Am I going to regret this?16
-
No we don't actually need to have a meeting about this because your architectural opinions rely on medium articles written by unemployed people pretending that these competing technologies are relevant. All you have to do is take an existing piece of code and rewrite it how you'd like to, and show everyone that it's better5
-
Okay I'm not trying to start a comment war or anything, but Im struggling. I want to learn PHP but im already great with python and can just learn flask.. Is there any advantages to learn both because I probably will do that I just wanted to hear some opinions.7

Being on devrant has made me realise just how different peoples opinions/preferences are! Someone rants about one thing and then the comments are either defense, agreement, or "you're both wrong, this is why" 😂😂2

what are your guys' opinions on rust vs c++? I personally prefer rust. the only thing that I really struggle with in rust is lifetimes. I definitely feel that rust is more modern and it's pretty similar to c++ from what I've seen14
-
Never had a real fight referring to any development - stuff, because most devs around me are more experienced and most of the time I can see the point in their opinions. I definitely had some discussions about some constructs in C++ for example. But thats it.

What do you guys think of forced linters (checkStyle) on java assignments?
At this University we have a submission system that checks for your code where if a line didn't match the coding specification then it's an instant zero.
Being experienced in programming before going to a university, this somewhat surprised me, it also has unit tests implemented in it where it checks against input and output.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Is it too much for people who unlike me never seen code before? Or let them have hell and understand how to deal with it? I personally think it's too much for beginners.3 -
Is granting read access to a client app a good practice? Intefrations should be done through APIs, jms and the like, right? My opinion is it should be a no no to do the integration on the database layer bypassing the app even if both apps are internal service which are completely different products. opinions are much appreciated.9

Not a rant, but I'd love to see three top notch developers, doing a coding challenge, in the same language, without any text editors, IDE's, compilers ( other than pre-installed ones ) when they start, working on 'their' most unfamiliar OS; the three OS options being Linux, Windows & OSX.

What is everyones opinions on declaring class constructors as 'final'?
Could use some feedback experience, pros/cons?

2. Talk to as many people as possible to get as much feedback and opinions as possible.

!rant => question?
I'm hired as a freelancer for a start-up that wants to create a social-network-like platform. I've always been a "basic" PHP and javascript developer like using AngularJS, MySQL and my own kinda like PHP MVC framework etc.. But I'm worried that 'this' will come short when the platform expands on the user-base and stuff. That MySQL won't be able to keep up with the expectations and the amountof data, that AngularJS will not be enough for the Frontend,.. I've taken a look at ReactJS, RethinkDB, NodeJS and such, but this is not really within my "comfort zone" and I'm not willing to invest time in something new if it's not able to handle the platform (I don't know if it will..) and I'm afraid that I'll have to start from scratch if it all fails.. (and this is something I can't afford)
So.. What are you guys's opinions? We're not looking at millions of users, but it will have feeds, comments, connections, messages, post scopes,.. Etc. RethinkDB looks promising with the 'watchers' to get live data instantly, but it's a whole new way of query'ing and such.. It just feels like I'm wasting my time because I'm afraid that I'll reach a point in development where I'll have a situation for example like "damn.. This is impossible with angular or php.." [I've shouldn't have agreed to this project..] :D1 -

I am a third year computer science student and I'm interested to see how professionals think I stack up against grads they have worked with straight from uni.
I have spent 15 months at a web company working on bespoke solo products on LAMP stacks. I know html, css, JavaScript and its library JQuery very well (I know JavaScript is massive to be saying I know it well)
I am reasonable at PHP and MySQL. Currently I am studying node.js and building an api that mashes up data from other APIs to build a new service. I'm also working on a C# Microsoft framework bespoke website. I know git to a reasonable level - branches, merges, rollbacks and all that jazz.
I am also studying development architectures to try and be more useful.
So if you guys came across a new grad that knew HTML, css, JavaScript, JQuery, maybe angular js, PHP, basic Linux commands, MySQL, C#, dev architectures, agile methods, node.js, git and has 15 months experience working on small to medium sized solo projects would you want to hire them?
Point to note I'll probably graduate first class (80%+) from a mid range uni.
Sorry, I know this is not the place but I like this community.5 -

You work in a team, for a team to move forward successfully the team should work in sync. A team always has a goal and a plan to get to it. There are times when the team needs to take a different direction therefore the set path should always be available for change because our environments dictate it.
We all have different styles of working and different opinions on how things should work. Sometimes one is wrong and the other is right, and sometimes both are wrong, or actually sometimes both are right. However, at the end of it all, the next step is a decision for the team, not an individual, and moving forward means doing it together. #KickAssTeam
The end result can not come in at the beginning but only at the end of an implementation and sometimes if you’re lucky, during implementation you can smell the shit before it hits the fan. So as humans, we will make mistakes at times by using the wrong decisions and when this happens, a strong team will pull things in the right direction quickly and together. #KickAssTeam
Having a team of different opinions does not mean not being able to work together. It actually means a strong team! #kickAssTeam However the challenging part means it can be a challenge. This calls for having processes in place that will allow the team members to be heard and for new knowledge to take lead. This space requires discipline in listening and interrogating opinions without attachment to ideas and always knowing that YOUR opinion is a suggestion, not a solution. Until it is taken on by the team. #KickAssTeam We all love our own thinking. However, learning to re-learn or change opinions when faced with new information should become as easy to take in and use.
Now, I am no expert at this however through my years of development I find this strategy to work in a team of developers. It’s a few questions you ask yourself before every commit, When faced with working in a new team and possibly as a suggestion when trying to align other team members with the team.
The point of this article, the questions to self!
Am I following the formatting standard set?
Is what I have written in line with official documentation?
Is what I am committing a technical conversion of the business requirement?
Have I duplicated functionality the framework already offers?
I have introduced a methodology, library, heavily reusable component to the system, have you had a discussion with the team before implementing?
Are your methods and functions truly responsible for 1 thing?
Will someone you will never get to talk to or your future self have documentation of your work?
Either via point number 2, domain-specific, or business requirements documentation.
Are you future thinking too much in your solution?
Will future proof have a great chance of complicating the current use case?
Remember, you can never write perfect code that cures every future problem, but what you can do perfectly is serve the current business problem you are facing and after doing that for decades, you would have had a perfect line of development success.1 -

Question:
I want to develop a simple reminders service. People will go online and set a reminder and the service will send an email when the reminder is schedule.
I want to use the simplest stack I can. It will be very simple so I don't want anything complex.
So I need a DB backend, a server to host the web interface so people can set up the reminders, and a background process that send out the emails.
People set up reminders, they are stored in the DB and the process read the reminders every X amount of time and send the emails scheduled in that particular time.
I was thinking about using Firebase (only tried it once in a small chat app for practice). A small web interface stored in a server (which? idk. Heroku, AWS?). And a deamon scheduled to run every half an hour (running where? idk. I have a spare laptop that I can use as server for this purpose or Heroku or any other).
What services (free, or at least free at the beginning) would you use in order to save time and money.
PS: I know Python and Java. But I've worked with PHP (and HTML+CSS). I know next to nothing about JS.11 -
