Customer :Can you build a system that rates our product by XYZ standard?
Us: Sure!
*time passes*
Us: Ta-da!
Customer: Okay, here are some good and some bad products!
*products get rated shit to supershit*
Customer: No, that's wrong. Some of these are as good as we can, they should be rated best!
Us: okay, we offset the results.
*products get rated good to barely okay*
Customer: Great! Can you sign that the system rates by XYZ Standard?
Us: No.
Customer : But we paid you to rate by XYZ standard!
Us: By XYZ standard your products are bad, you can either have your products rated by standard or pass the test.
Customer: Unacceptable!
Us: Improve production?
Customer : Not possible, the job is done when you rate the products good by XYZ standard.9 -
tl;dr Yes, we know the standard for RAM is getting higher; no, that doesn't mean you can increase your app's RAM usage for no good reason.
Homemade, terrible comic.5 -
"could you please just use the standard messaging/social networking thingies? That way it'll be way easier to communicate!!"
Oh I don't mind using standard tools/services which everyone uses at all.
Just a few requirement: they don't save information that doesn't need to be saved, leave the users in control of their data (through end to end encryption for example) and aren't integrated in mass surveillance networks.
Aaaaaand all the standard options which everyone uses are gone 😩30 -
JsonX is a an IBM standard to represent JSON in XML...
Like wtf dude? What's the point in making shit even more verbose than the original XML ?26 -

As a high-school student who has learned to program, i can't understand why programming isn't standard curriculim. It makes it so much more fun to learn math and physics. I also think even basic understanding of it improves how we use technology
Remember to teach your youth to program!1 -
The new w3c standard "CSS Houdini" gives you access to the css engine and let's you write your own css properties. That means no more polyfils, new exciting website designs and more possibilities and control on how the css is rendered on all browsers.7

I hope computing heavens have:
-One brand of hardware
-One OS
-One browser
-No closed source software
-No ads
-One monitor aspect ratio
-One fucking programming language with a fucking big standard library.
-Phones are just the same exactly the same OS as in computer, not stupid adaptations.
-All pages are only HTML/CSS, without JS.
-Due there is one browser and one OS, when you need a dynamic page, you can display a desktop app in the browser downloading its binary.
-There are one fucking brand on printer with standard drivers which are included in the OS.
We are so far from heaven15 -
Received my new mechanical keyboard from Amazon today. It feels so much better than our standard company Dell keyboard. And it looks so great. Also it has nice LEDs with several modes. Love it14

Taking 30 minutes to write a function that I later found in the standard library of the language. Silly me. 😓4

I love how C++ is getting better and better with every new standard. How preprocessor-hacks become less and less relevant.
Now C++ 20 is finally giving us modules, and we only had to wait 26 years longer than the Fortran guys. Well done, people. Well done.

So I am taking a break from the standard social media. Facebook, Instagram, etc. To sort of let my friends know, i posted this picture before disabling my accounts.
Right around midnight, the calls started pouring in because everyone thought I was going to kill myself.

I always feel insecure when i push my code to github as public repo.

What if i showed a very stupid logic.
I am very insecure when pushing my code to public repos.12 -

DatePickers should be a W3C standard handled by the browser. We shouldn't rely on JavaScript plugins to do this basic input stuff8

When someone says that Node.js cannot become enterprise standard like Java. Bitch what the fuck is Netflix, Yahoo, WalMart and PayPal using. Fuck you!17

An open standard quotes the same guy in 2/3 refs, very open indeed.
This guy damaged JavaScript as a language more than anyone else in the world, and he may still call it an achievement.6 -
Tough days are standard are they not?
A good ritual is forcing yourself outside and get some fresh air, don’t have a single thought of what it is you were doing and just destress.
I also find punching something therapeutic aswell so there’s always that option 😅 -
First Qwerty-keyboard ever here. This is weird. Why does Belgium have to use Azerty as a standard? It's so stupid.5

Excel is starting to piss me off. Can't do Ctrl+A in a search field, can't do ctrl+A in the standard input field, and now it turns out it can't open files with the same name (on different paths) at the same time. What the actual fuck?5

I'd never do anything "risky" in a prod environment if I considered it so at the time, but in retrospect there's *lots* of things considered risky now (both from a security and good practice viewpoint) that were standard practice not long ago:
- Not using any form of version control
- No tests (including no unit tests)
- Not considering XSS vulnerabilities
- Completely ignoring CSRF vulnerabilities
- Storing passwords as unsalted MD5 hashes (heck that was considered very *secure* in the days of plaintext password storage.)
...etc. I'm guilty of all of those previously. I daresay in the future there will be yet more things that may be standard practice now, but become taboos we look back on with similar disdain.1 -
Got told by a senior engineer to basically fuck off with my standard library containers like vector because they are used by people who dont know how to write code in c++ and don't know how to handle pointers.
Am I wrong for trying to use as much possible code from the standard library?13 -
I never understood why designers design radio and checkbox inputs like that. I guess the standard design is too much accessible.19

We are tasked with creating a site for a tv channel with livestream and stuff. Nobody has relevant experience so we have to research what's on other channels' sites. So far the industry standard seems to be broken bootstrap, inconsistent style and 2008 design.

Why the heck does the C++ committee let Microsoft have so much influence over the language?

Talking with manager about C++ ...
ME: ... and those are the main differences when coming from C03 to C17.
MGR: OK. I think I got it... are these changes those kind of changes that when we know them we can work in any industry if they use C++?
ME: No they are not, sorry. They are like basic enablers to even start considering entering some industries. What you mean are standards. AUTOSAR standard for example is for automotive industry.
The standard requires some level of C++ standard competency.
MGR: Are these standards like plugins for C++...
ME: ? ... no. They specify rules and architecture, conventions and such.
MGR: ... aah. Architecture, I know that word. So in fact they are plugins....like...like...Eclipse IDE has architecture and it can have plugins....right ? ... and you just plugin that AUTOSAR standard to C++ language.
ME: I think you mixing stuff up on multiple levels here. I think we are not ready to talk C++ competency as a strategic decision yet... lets get some basics down first and discuss this stuff in one month.
MGR: ... ?..but, but I mean it can't be that hard. I think I almost got the gist. I just misunderstood at some point.
ME: Sure, sure. No worries...you almost had it *with deep sarcasm*.5 -

I find it very strange and telling when people tell me that a dev shouldn't "re-invent the wheel", "roll your own" or "leave it to the experts" while simultaneously promoting substandard own-rolled projects by other people that simply got popular.
Kind of a strange elitist double standard that encourages a bad mindset of "I can't be as good as them" and it's toxic.
If you wanna make your own framework / package / etc, just do it, it might even be better.7 -

Wanna know about hacks? I'll tell you. There is a peace of software called SugarCRM. It has OAuth2 provider implementation. I was assigned to write OAuth2 consumer for it.
It turned out they just failed to make it right.
The list of hacks:
* Hack on standard Authentication header. They use custom.
* Hack on "scope". They send null which is standard violation. So it is replaced to empty string before response processing starts.
* This is my favorite. Refresh token simply doesn't work. So we need to store user's credentials in memory to be able to reauthenticate user transparently.2 -

Any professional pentesters or someone working in cybersecurity as a profession? I need some advice. The company I intern with right now wants me to test their web applications for security (they really don't care so much about security). I just wanted to know is there a standard set of procedures or a checklist that is usually followed? I know automated testing is not all that effective against web applications but what are the steps you usually take?
As of now, I have run tests and am now performing a code review but it's in PHP and I'm not really good with it. I'd like to know what more is done as a standard please.2 -
unpopular opinion: maybe updates would take under <super long time that's overblown> if you did it more often. Also defrag your standard HDDs like every month (weekly if you really want the performance boost)8

Something they don't tell you about c++ development until it's too late: cross-compiler compatibility is an enormous monster.
When I worked with C# creating a DLL and distributing it to others is a completely transparent process, there's no special considerations required at all.
In c++ you basically aren't allowed to use the standard library in many cases. You can't just export a class with a standard string as a member because when another person goes to use your DLL, the string might have a different implementation.8 -
What does projektaquarius do when he doesn't have a working IDE? Reformat code (that I am already refactoring) to an industry standard format and prepare for the arguments that are going to come from the other group who has their own coding standard that isn't industry standard.
Already preparing for the Pascal case versus Camel case argument. Emotionally that is. Mentally the argument basically just amount to "your group didn't want to refactor the code so we did it. Live with it or you do it." -
Attempting a huge undertaking. I'm trying to convert a large JavaScript library, written in standard ES5 syntax, to Typescript with ES6 syntax. Turns out it's extremely difficult, but if I can finish this it will be 100% worth it3

Question PHP folks. Is it a standard to write:
public function hair()?
Writing only:
function hair() is just the same thing to the above. It will default to "public" hair right? 🤔 maybe just a PSR-2 standard or for readability? Thanks!3 -
I'm still using .then().catch() instead of the async await.
So, first of all, Fuck you for calling it a STANDARD now. its nowhere near to be called standard. You wanna get some data from an API? Wanna call it using axios or fetch? What if the server is down? what if there's an error that you don't even know existed? Where do I get that kinda error in async await? try-catch? no thanks :| I'm good -_-8 -
So is it just a standard thing, now, where interviewers get you to do a coding problem remotely on a shared notepad while they watch you over video chat? For me at least, it is the most uncomfortable style of interview I've experienced. I don't think I'll ever get through one :(4

Hi fellow ranters,
Its been awhile since I last was here posting stuff..
So, I've commited to my effords getting shit done in golang. And I met a lot of painpoints, and I mean...
A
Lot
Of
Them.
Anyway, most of them are solvable by changing mindset or having some macros set up for no-one-fucking-wanted bloody boilerplate code that is omnipresent fucking EVERYWHERE.. **cough**
Steering back on what I want to rant about.
We with our team have one major problem with golang. There is no standard for docs in code...
Like, Fing legit. Everyone uses notation for closest to theirs heart language, so you get inconsistent-as-fuck notations for parameters / function descriptions.
We have functions that look like
//doSth does something
and also
// doSth
// @Summary does sth
// @Description does something but in more words
// @Param
and so on and so on
And trust me Im getting mild example.
Why this language does not have A F...ING (well defined, using proper definitions) STANDARD YET?
EDIT:
bonus context: We decided that too much of our code is undocumented and we go through efford of documenting it, but everyone sees it differently, and we can't agree on one single standard... So we decided to not refuse PRs due standard, as well, nobody would ever had PR accepted3 -
Those anyone has created a Chrome theme?
Dunno if Im a dumbass or there is no fucking documentation.. I have seen old forums of ppl coursing google for making it so difficult (apart from the standard upload a picture bs)3 -
Microsoft stuff.

2020 and Chrome has yet to decide upon a standard style for they inner form controls.
This is a date field with:

Nobody likes to be compared. Like, " why can't you be more like him/her".If someone at the company do something better, they become standard.

Why do people keep inventing new object serialisations when there is already JSON and XML? Why do people think that a custom format and parser would be better than an industry standard and a parser that has years of development improvements? :-S
How would you teach / punish these people?2 -
This is the first company I've been at without annual performance reviews. Employees are supposed to go to their manager when they feel they deserve a pay increase and start and undocumented process of writing up their contributions for the year. No standard cost of living increases.7

do you guys think multitasking is a high standard? at work we deem it essential, but i wonder if it's too much to expect new people to pick up on our pace. if we're not coding in a meeting while answering texts and emails, we're not getting anything done13

To those of us who suffer from "Not invented here syndrome", I want you to ask yourself this question. If "reinventing the wheel is so valuable", would you re-implement the entire OSI stack?
No, as it would be a COMPLETE waste of time!!!
In all the layers below your application, several things related to how your code gets presented to your end-user are abstracted away from you. If you are able to accept that completely, why do you feel the need to re-implement every well-understood part of your particular project?
Cars, for example, are mostly made from standardized parts that solve well-understood problems. It then may have a few custom parts that may solve some novel problems to make it stand out from the rest.
Buildings are made completely from standardized parts, with regulations on how they are put together with some room for artistic flare.
If Software wants to be as equally respected as the rest, we need to get to that point.
DONT reinvent the wheel, just use battle-tested parts and just focus on what your project is trying to solve. It will be way more fruitful and fulfilling.

I haven't really had any. That is to say, I haven't worked for a company with a coding standard :/2

If you are going to maintain empty directories in your git repo then use the strategy of placing a file inside the directory called .gitkeep. Searching on this filename will lead you to a discussion of the same topic (hopefully, maybe not). Which includes a lengthy discussion on how the semantics of the file name is somehow more important than the answer of keeping the directory in the repo. My favorite part was someone claiming the file name .gitkeep was the standard way of maintaining a directory and others jumping on this person saying not it is NOT the standard way, and that in fact any filename would work. Misunderstanding that saying it was the standard probably only referred to placing a file and not choosing that exact name.
Basically it seemed to turn into an autists semantics fistfight in the comments.

Someone is that discussion claimed .gitkeep would lead to confusion if it was a standard git filename. I then found this:

Once upon a time aka last week,
Was trying to fix an industrial automation software coded in Codesys. My company's standard library is riddled with bad documentation with a mix of English and German terminology.
Had to find out why a program kept crashing the program upon start up. Long story short and many stressful hours later, I found two functions in the standard library that caused an endless terminal process loop. Had to wrap the function in an 'if statement' so it would only run once. Function should have done this by default. -
My rant yesterday or whenever it was.
Dumbass tier 2 support staff told me i didn't know what i was doing and i had to do it his way while my way is pretty much the standard -

Hot Take:
It's our own double standard because of which companies have to enforce a "Don't discuss your salary" clause in the employee handbook.
For example let's say you are a 4 years experienced dev making $50K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 2 years experience drawing $65K from the company. You will be outraged knowing that, wouldn't you?
The double standard kicks in when the coin is flipped. Now let's say you are 2 years experienced dev making $60K annually. You hear about a new joiner who has 6 years experience drawing a $45K annual salary.
You're not gonna fight with your employer for them to get more salary, are you? If anything, you will be happy to hear that.
When everyone knows how much everyone else is making, it fills them with resentment towards each other. This is why companies make a rule for their employees to never reveal their salaries, because of our own double standard.17 -

Since the last update of the company antivirus some things became terribly slow, like IE dev tools, they are standard slow, but now they ere horribly slow, copying a 500MB file over the network to my pc now takes 10 minutes and the worst part is git. Git is unusably slow so i can't use git-tfs anymore and have to use standard TFS again.
And whenever all of this is happening there is always the same thing on the top spot of CPU usage 'trend micro unauthorized change prevention service'.
Oh how I hate that antivirus crap -

I feel like IE is an example of a deep rooted demon beast that spawns fucktarded bloat transpilers like BABEL.
When companies try to invent their own wheels, or do their own thing is when the pits of developer hell start to spawn such fucking convoluted fucktarded bullshit.
Abstract to Design:
I'm trying to think of a world where things are standardized, as boring as it sounds... Imagine if companies weren't so fucktarded with greedy smoke and mirrors, and they all contributed to making a single product standardized and workable, and improve on that product... Like a physics "Standard model" but for each product invented.
But no... here we are... 20 million ways to accomplish one similar task, with 20 million different designs, with majority adhering to their own flaws... or planned obsolecence... 10 million booby traps of consumer remorse.
Why do we do this as a society just to make some bastard company's profit margin go up, so they can keep competing in the "free market" of fuck all fuckery?
I get it.. yea... innovation... sure..
but sometimes innovation is just a means to and end of sanity, especially when they are proprietary, and especially when that proprietary shit turns to, well... shit!
In a perfect world, things will be designed open-sourced, compatible, and improved upon without "breaking" changes... but this is virtually impossible without standardization of the VERY fundamental components. But then those components can be improved, and might be smaller/lighter/more efficient by design, and simply wont work with the old versions without drastic "TRANSPILATION"
I suppose this is the way it is always going to be... Neverending stream of design "improvements". I suppose being a developer in todays world is a bittersweet existence... unless you're just trying to make ends meet... in that case. I think I might be in hell.
Take a look at web-dev today with all the "improvements" ... it's literally turned into a jungle of FUCK MY LIFE. A giant dick waiving contest with all these dicks colliding against each other in cluster fuck bombardment.
God help us all.... and now back to coding.4 -

So... I need to implement something from a spec based on a set of standards that use another set of standards based on IETF RFC.
Decide to use a library that implements the original specs. Nothing works.
Read through all of the specs, researched the standards they used, read the RFCs.
Turns out the library doesn't implement the specs properly. Looks like I'll still have to implement my own.

How many standard drinks (or alcohol) is 4 CL of gin?
In most countries, a standard drink or alcoholic beverage is commonly defined as containing approximately 14 grams (0.6 ounces) of pure alcohol. This amount of alcohol is found in various quantities of different types of alcoholic beverages.
A typical shot of distilled spirits, like gin, is often around 1.5 ounces (44.3 ml), which is roughly 4 centiliters (CL). If we assume that the gin has an alcohol content of around 40% (80 proof), then the pure alcohol content in 4 CL of gin would be:
4 CL * 0.4 (alcohol content) = 1.6 CL of pure alcohol.
To convert this to standard drinks, which are typically based on 14 grams of pure alcohol, you would divide the amount of pure alcohol by the amount of alcohol in a standard drink:
1.6 CL / 14 grams = ~0.11 standard drinks.
So, approximately 4 CL of gin would contain about 0.11 standard drinks worth of alcohol. Keep in mind that alcohol content can vary between different brands and types of gin, so this is a rough estimate. It's always a good idea to refer to the label on the bottle for more accurate information.
Thanks, Chat GPT, i'm going to go ahead and drink 10 of these gin sodas and i'll only have had one standard drink!!!!

I just realized: People bitching about JS standard library, bundle size, need to use polyfills etc - is useless IMO. We need to start viewing transpilers as compilers and overall JS ecosystem like we are developing something in ActionScript Flash/Java Applet and exporting it for use inside browsers. And forget about "bad parts" of standard clean JS overall. See clean JS like it's as bad as it was in the past. (because without polyfills you still don't have most of the major es6 features in the IE browsers)
In the past we needed Flash plugins, Java plugins for applets, and they had size way larger than average JS bundle nowadays.
What you think?2 -
