I shall not be limited by the boundaries that they have defined for me! I shall break free from these chains and transcend my internal barriers!
I shall earn my freedom!

My friend (not in CS) said his computer was a bit slow.
I told him I'd fix that for 10, he agreed.
I increased the cursor speed.
He bought it.16 -
Ranted about that porn work prank.
Forgot a joke the senior linux engineer pulled with me.
I came back from the toilet and sat down. Logged in. Cursor was on the left screen. Looked away and then back. Cursor was on the right screen.
*wait what? hmm must be my memory.*
*looks away and turns back*
*wait did that cursor just move.....?*
*damn what's up with me...?!?*
*turns around and looks back VERY quickly*
*cursor moves all over the screen*
*looks at front usb inputs*
*notices a wireless receiver*
*laughing from the corner where the senior linux engineer is sitting*
MOTHERFUCKER.25 -
Today I discovered by myself that...
...in a shell...
...when entering a password (e.g. ssh)...
...and you make a typo... 🤦♂️
...you don't need to smack that backspace key like a maniac! You can just use the clear line shortcut: control+U (^U). This clears all input to the left of your cursor and this also works for passwords.26 -
I've been slowly increasing the size of my tech manager's mouse cursor over the last month when he leaves his computer unlocked. It's about an inch tall now and he hasn't noticed yet. Everyone else in the office does and it's the best thing ever.11
-
So I decided to give Linux a try again.
Created live usb. Prepared myself to go through all the hassles at the beginning.
Booted in live USB. I can't see mouse cursor.
Searched in google, apparently a common problem with GTX 1070/1080 graphics cards.
Installed proprietary nvidia drivers with keyboard only. Took me about 20 minutes.
Finally managed to get the mouse cursor and install ubuntu. Time to boot and smell the fresh air of linux again.
Sound card doesn't work. Even the integrated mobo sound card doesn't work. Looked for a solution, found the bug in lunchpad but not solution yet. Everyone recommending to buy an external sound card.
I can't code without music. Decided to remove linux.
Booted back to Windows and removed linux partition. That fucked up my bootloader although I installed linux's efi loader completely separately.
Now I am sitting in front of my computer, with black grub screen, while trying to make a Windows 10 usb with my 7 years old broken laptop.
Next time I see a rant about Windows 10 that glorifies linux, I swear I'm gonna smack your face over standard TCP/IP47 -
Me: *selects text, Ctrl+c*
Me: *places cursor in next text box, Ctrl+v*
Computer: *does nothing*
Me: *selects text again, presses CTRL+C WITH FORCE*
Me: *places cursor in next text box again, presses CTRL+V WITH FORCE*
Computer: *pastes*
Me: "That's what I thought."19 -
This girl from financial department pissed me off so badly I took 15 minutes of my private time to slightly modify CSS and JS for her user in our intranet panel, made everything pink and blue, animate all the buttons to randomly barrel roll and made the mouse cursor explode colourful star particles with each click.
She *liked* it, said it was *sweet* and *apologized* for being an ass. Robbed me of all the satisfaction. :(6 -
I use my mouse on 4k dpi and today someone asked me how do i move the cursor without moving the mouse5
-
Ctrl + W allows to select the word, then the sentence, around your cursor inside a JetBrains software.
Ctrl + W allows you to FUCKING close the current tab in any FUCKING web browser14 -
StackOverflow's mouse cursor effect is exponentially decreasing my productivity as I go through the day.
I can't stop watching it.2 -
In 2008 I took my first web development job for an agency that's no longer around. There was a Vice President there by appointment from our coke headed owner who really liked to micromanage and invade privacy with key loggers and screencap spyware to "manage" us. I found out because my machine would snag when moving the mouse cursor and sometimes I'd accidentally paste the screenshot into photoshop just before the software cleared the clipboard. Anyway, I wasn't supposed to know I was being monitored so I just unplugged my network cable and killed the service running the jank ass spyware. I'd delete it when no one was looking and wipe out the cache of screencaps it would compile every day. It was basically a troll vs troll stalemate for weeks. Finally they gave in and told everyone what was going on so we collectively decided to seek revenge. We bought a piezo buzzer about the size of a quarter that chirped like crickets at random intervals. We stuck it on the underside of his desk inside of the middle drawer area and let it go. They spent so much time and money trying to get rid of the cricket infestation. We let it go on for weeks. I ended up quitting before the gag was up, but damn was it funny to see him squirm in that office because of those crickets!6
-
I made a hotkey script for a colleague that made the backspace act like a left arrow. You should've seen his face when he saw the cursor moving back but not removing characters.4

How millionaires deal with laptops.
1. Buy a gaming laptop.
2. Install any OS.
3. Open IE11.
4. Place cursor in the new search bar in top right.
5. Type 4k wallpapers.
6. Download anything.
7. Open in MS Photos.
8. Right click, Set as > Wallpaper BG
9. Leave it in the corner.
10. Sell it at double 2 days later.14 -

I literally cannot get this computer to boot from ANYTHING other than its hard drive.
I want to boot from a usb flash drive, but the bios doesn't support that. it supports standard and 120mb floppies, ZIP drives, usb floppies, usb cd drives, etc. but not a generic USB drive. You'd think the bios developers would have heard of them back in 2012, but they also refer to Windows as "window os", so who knows.
I changed the boot order multiple times to include everything that might possibly include a usb flash drive, and then just tried all of the other options as well. No luck. Everything just booted straight to Windows.
Okay, that's not exactly unexpected, so I found a boot manager that allows booting to usb drives, and burned that to a cd. I made sure the boot order included "CDDRIVE" first (and "USB-CD" second just to be sure), and tried again. The bios refused to boot from the cd because it's in a cd/dvd drive, and cd drives are VASTLY different beasts than dvd drives, apparently. Like, it didn't even ask the drive to spin up! It just booted straight into Windows.
After a few more reboots (and quite a few middle fingers), my dvd drive magically appeared in the list of allowed boot devices. Why did it just show up now? No clue :/ I'm just happy it's there.
So, I pick that, save and exit, and wait for my shiny new boot manager to pop up. The cursor flashes a bit, moves around, and flashes some more. Then Windows starts loading.
what the crap? why?
So this time I disable booting from the hard drive altogether. In fact, I disable everything except the dvd drive, because screw this, and save/restart for the twelfth time.
Windows greets me.
Again.
What the hell?
At this point I'm tempted to unplug the friggin' drive. If Windows still greets me after that, I'm just going to check myself into an asylum and call it a life.
But seriously.
Either the boot manager in question is triple-faulting and the bios is transparently failing-over to the previous boot config (Windows), or said boot manager is just like "yolo!" and picks Windows anyway.
If a different boot manager doesn't work, I'm totally out of ideas.
Edit: disabling HD boot entirely and removing the boot manager cd also results in Windows loading. It's like the bios is completely ignoring my settings. :/16 -
Found this interesting Vim based Pacman game: https://github.com/jmoon018/PacVim
acVim is a game that teaches you vim commands. You must move pacman (the green cursor) to highlight each word on the gameboard while avoiding the ghosts (in red).4 -
Firefox: click on the address bar and now you can select something or start typing or move the cursor left/right, works great.
Chromium (because fuck chrome):click in the address bar and THE ENTIRE URL GETS/BECOMES SELECTED. Wanna type something? Sure, go ahead, but FIRST click somewhere else or move the cursor because otherwise the entire url is fucking gone.
Maybe there's a way to disable this behavior but boy does it annoy the living fuck out of me!15 -
Some of my working colleagues occasionally forget to lock their PCs even though they're told to, so a while ago I started opening YouTube videos or image galleries of Nicolas Cage on their desktop so that they learn.
One of them is very resistant to it though and left earlier (it's Friday and he will be back at Wednesday) without locking or shutting down his PC.
So this time I flipped his display, set Shia LeBoef as his wallpaper with a dia show also featuring Nicolas Cage, Ryan Gosling and Daniel Radcliffe and set Nicolas Cage's face as his cursor image.5 -
I couldn't sleep. I was staring at the blinking cursor. A slow, comforting blinking. Like everyone else, I had become a slave to the JavaScript ecosystem. If I saw something like a new build system, or a new framework, I had to have it.
My client changed the requirements again. I'm in pain.
- "You want to see pain?" my colleague said. Go read Apple support forums. That's pain.
I became addicted. Every time I died and every time I was born again. Resurrected.
During the night, I was crying in the Apple forums for an official answer that would never come. During the day, I was surfing StackOverflow to fix my problems. You get "single-serving" friends there. They help you, you help them, and then you never see them again.
- "Then you install Stack and boom, you're done. It's that easy to go functional."
That's how I met him.
- "You know why they make so many javascript frameworks?"
- "No, why?"
- "So that they can distract you while they put backdoors in them. So that you don't have time to check all of their code".
- "You are by far the most interesting "single-serving" friend I've ever met"
Then, my hard disk died. Of course, I didn't have backups: nobody has enough space for all those node_modules folders. All my addictions, lost.
Then I wrote him. If you asked me now, I couldn't tell you why I wrote him. We chatted a lot.
- "It's late, I should really go search another hdd on ebay"
- "Ebay? You called me so you could have my old hard disk."
- "No, I..."
- "Come on."
He sent me his old hard disk. It was a 256MB hard disk, but it was fine for running Arch. Then he asked me to rant about my problems in front of him.
- "I want you to rant as hard as you can"
- "Are you serious?"
We ranted all night about our bosses and clients and their fucked up requests. We kept in touch, and after a while more people were ranting with us. Every week, he gave the rules that he and I decided.
- "The first rule of devRant is -- you don't talk about devRant. The second rule of devRant is -- you don't talk about devRant."
I like to think this is how devRant started. This might also be the reason why we never see @trogus, only @dfox. A lot of shit still needs to happen.8 -
You know you are a geek when you try to shoo away a fly away from the monitor with your cursor. That just happened to me. It was scary...4

FFUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKK
I updated my entire system yesterday and shut down my PC.
Booted up today, greeted by the blinking cursor of death.
Already tried installing grub again, hoping it boots up now.
Wish me luck. :(35 -

Life Before the Computer
An application was for employment
A program was a TV show
A cursor used profanity
A keyboard was a piano!
Memory was something that you lost with age
A CD was a bank account
And if you had a 3-inch floppy
You hoped nobody found out!
Compress was something you did to garbage
Not something you did to a file
And if you unzipped anything in public
You'd be in jail for awhile!
Log on was adding wood to a fire
Hard drive was a long trip on the road
A mouse pad was where a mouse lived
And a backup happened to your commode!
Cut - you did with a pocket knife
Paste you did with glue
A web was a spider's home
And a virus was the flu!
I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper
And the memory in my head
I hear nobody's been killed in a computer crash
But when it happens they wish they were dead!3 -
1986. Commodore 64 computer. First program in assembler to move cursor on screen. I will never forget that day.2

devRantron v1.2.1
A lot of people have asked me in comments if it is available in windows, macOS or linux. Just to clear this up that it's available on all platform including all linux distros.
Changelists:
1. Clicking on in-app notifications will now scroll to the relevant comment
2. You can scroll outside the column now. Your mouse cursor doesn't need to inside to scroll through the feed
3. Clicking ESC will close any open modal
4. Use arrow keys to scroll feeds
5. User can't subscribe himself anymore
6. You can press enter to log in
Get it from here: https://devrantron.firebaseapp.com
**I posted this yesterday night but removed it immedietly as I detected a huge bug in the release. Sorry 😞11 -
I watched today one of our devs working in Windows with a Docker Environment.
I think I'm pretty insensitive regarding pain, horror and morbid stuff.
But damn. I really needed to turn off the stream or else I'd walk to the company and rip his fucking workstation out of the server rack to put it out of his misery...
Errors? ignore them....
Weird python messages? Ignore them...
wild copy pasta between notepad++ containing shell commands and a git bash... Per mouse context. Yes. Move the cursor, mark the text, right click, copy, go to terminal, right click, paste.
Understanding of whats happening. Zero. Like literal zero.
He was wondering why there were strange characters when he pasted log output in a text file...
My question: How do you think colored text works in a terminal environment?
was answered by : "Don't know, never thought about it. But don't think this has something to do with the weird characters?"
I don't wanna talk about the rest.
Retarded humanity can please kindly kill itself so the intelligent above average nice people can live in peace...
The meeting was 2 hours. I drank 5 bottles of beer after it in1 hour and I'm please to announce I'm forgetting large parts of what has happened.
Cheers.8 -
I keep putting my phone between my mouse and the wireless receiver and every time it makes it hard to move the cursor because of the blockage. So annoying!!3

Windows 10 had one groundbreaking UI innovation, but no one adopted it and even Windows 11 discareded this revolutionary idea:
BUTTONS NEXT TO EACH OTHER AND AT THE EDGE OF A BOX DON"T NEED AN ADDITIONAL MARGIN
Windows 10 was the first and last OS where I never accidentally clicked right next to the X on a window, in a passive area that had no other purpose so it might as well have belonged to that motherfucking button.
I passionately hate this trend, adopted nowadays by every OS, that everything needs to be rounded, separated from the things around it, and "allowed to breathe". They don't breathe. They're not alive. They're fucking UI elements and the space between them is unused, lost space.
The only interaction a button has with its surroundings is that it pushes other content away to make room for itself and responds to the cursor. It doesn't wiggle, it doesn't grow and shrink, and it ESPECIALLY doesn't fucking breathe. Please, just let me click the motherfucking button.
Relatedly, do you know of a good, preferably bluish dark GTK theme that provides window decorations that stretch the full height of the titlebar and are laid out next to each other at the very end of the bar without gaps?8 -
Professor wants to copy code on his laptop (with beamer)
-selects code
-moves mouse-pointer to top left
-clicks on 'file'
-clicks on 'copy'
-moves cursor to desired destination
-moves mouse-pointer to top left
-clicks on 'file'
-clicks on 'paste'
Man why do have to show us how shitty your trackpad is and bother us with 5min of copying, when you could use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V?5 -
Some websites are a disgrace to the internet and I wish there was a service that terminates them on a daily basis.
Really though, can you do some simple research about your users and see what will make their life easy?
You put the most important button of your website in a place where the I have to scroll down and looks for it. The beginning of your page has a stock picture that has no meaning or relevance to the topic of your page. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
And your button, it doesn't even look like a fucking button. It looks like a normal text, which doesn't even react to hovering. At least change the cursor to pointer so that I can understand that it's a button.
Fuck you, your button and your useless stock picture.3 -
Need a new portfolio website to be approved by apple (yea I know...) so decided to build one based on me because I'm so vain. Made a pretty little terminal window that looks like my tmux theme because I can. Complete with stupid commands.
Best way of spending 3 hours 😂
Feel free to play with it! https://pedantic-bartik-8fb191.netlify.app/...
ps: the input selection is a bit buggy (bad UX) click the cursor if it doesn't type

My macbook's trackpad has now got a stupid mind of its own. It's been moving the cursor and scrolling and zooming randomly on its own since morning. I suspect moisture. Have opened it and kept it in the sunlight. Let's see. Any other suggestions, anyone?22

Windows 10 - Ghost bubbles
Suddenly the ghost bubbles started appearing, with feverish flickering of cursor, not able to click anything, had to do hard restart and the bubbles disappeared. Happened a couple of times, infrequent.
I thought my PC is virus infected. Upon search, many users reported the same. Looks like some windows update messed up the graphic drivers :(20 -
- be me
- get home hook laptop up to tv, realise you left your wireless mouse at work *fuck*
- remember you still have a wireless keyboard and are pretty handy with shortcuts *duh*
- use keyboard magic, launch Netflix and play the show you want to watch *yay 🎉*
- realise the fucking cursor is over the play bar so you have to get up anyway. *fuck*
These days keyboard shortcuts can only take you so far.6 -
One guy buyed a remote for his tv which moves the mouse's cursor by pointing with the remote. And inserted the usb receiver into another's guy pc: restarts, antivirus scan, nothing worked for the poor guy. His mouse was crazy.

Windows 10 loves to freeze... especially when I wrote more than 200 lines of code and I'm pointing the cursor on the Save icon!
Thanks MS, you know how to give me a heart attack.12 -

On desktop applications: "I don't want to see a hand cursor on anything!"4 -

I'm running it in a VM and STILL this fucker gets on my nerves SO FUCKING HARD!!!
1. CPU% 100%. Laptop fans are spinning so hard it's ready to take off
2. My hands are on the laptop. THey are HOT from the heat from inside. Hell that's uncomfortable!
3. ctrl+shift+esc to see why is cpu% 100%. It's something called WMI Host something. Kill that mthrfckr!
4. Process respawns immediately and goes up to 100% again. I have already increased handles limitation for that service a few weeks ago. Like 20x more than it was before!

Most satisfying bug to fix...
Literally any API bug that returns JSON. Nothing quite like seeing that JSON blob come back correct.1 -
VSCodium, just for a little moment, please go fuck yourself.
I mostly use netbeans but for just a little I'm using VSCodium (VSCode without the Microsoft calling home bullshit).
Just had this error I didn't see that fast and then, usually, whenever you put your cursor on the tee underlined code, it tells you the error in this drive-by popup thingy.
The goddamn popup disappears so fucking quick that its impossible to read.
Ended up trying to capture a screenshot in time which worked at try number 10+, then saw the error and corrected it.
VSCodium go fuck yourself. I'm not ready for this shit when I've just woken up and haven't fully drank my first coffee yet (or this is more like a triple espresso as for strength)

My phone fell down for the thousandth time and i thought it was okay as it usually has been in previous attempts at suicide.
Pressed power button ...
Screen turned on showing lock screen...
Touched back key .... phone vibrated....
Hmmm... It's okay. Didn't try unlocking screen...
Received a call later on....
Swiped to pick up call.... Nothing moved...
Turned the screen off. Turned it on again. Tried opening screen lock. Again nothing moved...
Got an OTG and plugged a mouse into phone.
Cursor moves.
Alas... My Phone's Touch Unit is DEAD :/7 -
Windows Universal Platform... what the fuck??
I want to set the button cursor to a hand. Here's how you do it:
private void button_PointerEntered(object sender, PointerRoutedEventArgs e)
{
Windows.UI.Xaml.Window.Current.CoreWindow.PointerCursor = new Windows.UI.Core.CoreCursor(Windows.UI.Core.CoreCursorType.Hand, 1);
}
Don't forget to do the opposite when the mouse leaves!
FUCK YOU8 -
Loving everything about the new Apple keyboard except the cursor keys. Moving up and down is soooooooooo fliddly!17

One of my biggest tech related peeves, someone shows a video as part of their presentation but doesn't use full screen or even worse leaves the cursor over the video.
-
I kinda started programming back in the day, by breaking 2 school servers using a simple batch "virus"... it effectively opened tons of porn videos, threw the mouse cursor to the top right corner of the screen and shut down the PC after 15 seconds.
I masked the file and made sure it looked like internet explorer (since my school, back in the day, didn't use chrome and didn't allow the installation of chrome)
It was meant to troll my friend but all computers shared files with each other which meant even the private PC's of my teachers got my "virus"
Eventually it landed in the startup folder and messed everything up. I got snitched out, and I had to fix it
(I literally just wrote another batch file to delete my so called virus... because of the 15 seconds time limit I had)1 -
Now this looks stupid already, but here is the kicker: by "partially hydrated cursor" i mean that once every page size an sql query is ran to get the next page content. This code is put in an event handler, executed once every time a file is uploaded in a dms where files get uploaded by the thousand.
To sum things up, this simple snippet achieves triple dipping:
* waste time on useless sql queries
* waste cpu on useless iterations
* waste disk space on useless logs
Icing on the cake, the author of this piece of shit was complaining about the overall slowness of the process.
Needless to say that when I stumbled on this, both internal *and* external screaming ensued...4 -
At home I don't need to lock my computer. I just put the cursor into a vim shell. It's amusing what my kid leaves for me there.5

Today, for the first time since I've started coding, I had a legitimate use case for the multi-cursor feature of my IDE in reasonably DRY code.
Edit: nvm, I added a version of the function to support arrays on the first argument.5 -
I hate the Windows vs Linux posts and the Windows sucks posts but god dammit...
With Windows 7 becoming older and older with less and less things supporting it (latest thing is the new Oculus Dash) I yet again decided to try out Windows 10 to see if I should finally upgrade from a reasonably stable system.
So I make a virtual machine out of my physical one and boot it up in VMWare... I upgrade to Windows 10 to check it out it's kind of janky, but I attribute the jankiness to the messiness of running my physical machine in a VM... I continue with the setup process and suddenly, I only see a black screen and a cursor...
I notice VMware is hinting at not being able to connect to the monitor... I realise that, while everything is black and I can't even open Task Manager, I can still see the Ctrl-alt-delete screen so I'm fairly certain at this point it's the VGA driver, still thinking it's probably VMware...
I boot up into safe mode and I try to open up Device manager to uninstall the driver, it won't open (no error or anything, just doesn't open)...
I try opening up devices in the settings and see that the display device is giving an error, try to uninstall it from there, but it freezes the settings app, every time..
I try to uninstall VMware tools as that's where the driver is, click on remove or uninstall whatever the button says and guess what, it freezes the settings app....
I try to open task manager to kill it and task manager is not responding...

fuck it, I'm done...1 -
Cursors.
WHY U DO DIS?
I know I'm impatient but 20 minutes _and still going_ on an update is madness, even at this volume records, and it's all because one of the numerous dependent triggers is running A CURSOR. Genuinely thought the query had just put itself out of its misery, as I am tempted to do.1 -

Question for vim veterans:
I am fairly confident with vim. I know a couple of commands like delete line, delete under cursor, copy, paste, undo and stuff like that.
So in command mode it's hjkl to move the cursor, which is a good idea because I won't have to move my right palm to the arrow keys.
However, in insert mode, if I needed to move the cursor, I would still have to move my left palm to the esc key in order to use hjkl. Why not just use the arrow keys then?8 -
I'm soon leaving one of my SysAdmin jobs. Guess how I'll troll everyone then...
Right! I'll apply a Windows 10 total conversion onto all Linux client systems!
MUHAHAHAHA!
*note: some colleagues often ask if we could use windows instead - well, no.*
*note2: we have automatic provisioning and roll-out, so switching a theme is done with 20 lines of config code*

Animator for 15+ years. Started self learning python a few months back. I made my first useful app today... Move the cursor every 10 seconds. 2019 is off to a good start.
I'm new to programming but I already love devRant.
Happy New Year everyone! 😀5 -
So my Windows 10 after April Creators Update (aka Nothing Works) gets BSOD when I turn off Bluetooth, doesn’t recognize my headphones, turns them off if it does, WiFi forgets password after every single restart, most of the time I need to force Safe Mode to get the computer to boot because it freezes on black screen with cursor...
Just fucktastic10 -
And so.. I have noticed.. every time I ignore Windows updates for a little while.. the laptop just starts shitting. It gets so fucking slow that you can’t even move the cursor properly. So you have to force shut down the laptop and turn it ON.. and Windows starts updating!
Not at all irritating 😊3 -
using ssh over terrible internet speeds, spends all the time trying to figure out the cursor position3
-
Why the f*ck do you want custom cursor on the site? It's annoying when suddenly your cursor changes from default. If that's not enough they are increasing size by 2-3 times. I understand if it's a gaming site or web game but why do you want to put this crap on a business site? No need to change the cursor for branding. That's stupid.2
-
So, when hovering on that element in the bottom task bar in Windows 11, it shows those two icons (wifi and sound) grouped together.
Left click anywhere on that button and it opens the same menu.
But if you right click, now it suddenly depends if your cursor was on the one or on the other icon. It opens different menus!
Great UX! Good job, MS!13 -
I so want to switch from Eclipse to vscode. It feels so lightweight. But what makes me going back to eclipse everytime I try to switch to vscode are the little details.
why does the autocomplete popup close when moving the cursor left or right? In eclipse it just adapts the contents of the autocomplete content accordingly. Look at this issue to get what i mean: https://github.com/microsoft/...
And maybe vote for it too 😅3 -
I once accidentally pranked myself with a simple batch file that opened explorer windows on .25 second intervals.
The best part is that I was testing the timeout function and thought opening an explorer window would be the best way to gauge its success.1 -
Using eclipse after a long while on a work laptop and this fucking piece of shit console window popping the fuck up and my cursor auto switching to it is the fucking shit design of a fucking lunatic from the fourteenth circle of hell, where the eternal punishment in addition to being roasted alive, probably includes being forced to fucking use eclipse.
Did I mention fuck eclipse? Fuck, I don't even care if I did. Fuck eclipse again.
Oh and to add on, if you're thinking of making the very useful suggestion that it's very easy to turn off window focus with just two buttons, then fuck you and the guy who designed that shitty UI fucking button.3 -
UX-wise, it should be absolutely forbidden to alter anything that is being overlapped by the cursor.
One example is the (mostly) terrible search in Windows 10. I have a tendency to use the keywords "fire" for either Firefox or Firefox Developer Edition. Sometimes, Windows will give me Developer Edition as the top result, which is fine. But as I I'm about to click the icon, Windows will find the other Firefox and place it as the top result.
This is known as terrible UX. The user interface is working against the end-user.9 -
😂 PHPStorm's integrated terminal sucks! Doesn't play well with other oh-my-zsh themes so I just use the default theme.
Plus the ugly block cursor in the integrated terminal which cannot be edited. LOL! 😂6 -
Another update for whoever cares about this text editor that no one cares:
The cursor (which is now a block instead of underscore like before) is now finally functional, but is quite flawed (e.g. If you type two lines with the first line is longer than the second, there's a chance that the cursor might jump to the end of the first line). There's also some text that greets you when you first open the editor, but it will be hidden when you start typing in Insert mode.7 -
So I now bought an iphone 6 again for development and tried just for fun to make it a daily driver and it feels really limited, especially because apparently theres no jailbreak yet for 11.2.5. (I feel near everything could be solved as soon as cydia etc. get fully released to the alibaba jailbreak)
I didnt even remember, that it doesnt have any option to have haptic feedback when typing, such a basic feature has to be jailbroken..? I thought I remembered that it had it, last time I had one - did they remove such a basic feature?
Also the fingerprint reader is really weird compared to other phones from the same year, first getting it to actually fill all fingerprint lines without saying "try again" or it trolling you and vibrating as if it recognized your finger, but actually didnt (really frustrating when its the last 2 lines...) - is a real challenge, might be that I have some mutant fingerprints, but when I asked my s/o to try it out, it also failed most of the times, so you have to position your finger in a very specific position for it to work, even if you add the max amount of 5 fingerprints.
Most ads on iphones feel HORRIBLE, the amount of lag some can add is incredible, wait till it loaded or youre fucked and besides using some shady adblocker vpn, theres no way to block them, without again - a jailbreak.
Another feature that I used many times on my android phone, is controlling it from the desktop, connect it via usb and then just use it for demonstration purposes on a projector or to instruct how things work - theres no such function without a jailbreak, even if you use osx..
Then theres the feature, that instead of just setting your cursor to a specific location, you have to hold and it zooms in, not sure if I just got too used to the android way of doing it, but I can see myself making less mistakes of where I positioned it with the ios way.
The hardware mute switch feels like a great feature, its just sometimes weird, so if you were inside an app that was playing sound and you mute it, it still plays it until you either close and open that app or just change to another one temporarily, so its not an actual hardware switch as I usually thought, more like a request to mute the phone.
The cable that comes with it is too thin, I am afraid to even unwind it, as it would probably break, so I had to get another one.
Please don't turn this into a shitfest from any of the fanboys, I really just wanted to share my image of finally being able to try it first hand again.4 -
I've been dreaming about an eat() method in, I guess, Javascript. It would accept a string as parameter and set the cursor position further by the width of that string in the current font and size without displaying the string. A bit like a span with FG == BG.
But the best was the debug mode: the characters would be printed, but a yellow duck would appear from the left and eat them in Pacman style.1 -
FUCKING SHIT! Am I really the fucking only one that is fighting with the cursor jumping into the fucking next line or to the start, while you are trying to select only a part of a long line?! I know theres wordwrap, but I fucking hate it!6

To all the masochists who spent hours debugging misspellings:
1. Learn your tools
2. Learn good practice
Every IDE should point out when you're not using a variable you've initiated or using an uninitiated variable as well as at least highlight, if not simply list, every occurrence of the variable under your cursor and let you find all references or even display the number of references next to a variable at all times, and finally, every IDE should autocomplete for you so when it doesn't you know you've messed up. Good IDE makes all the easy mistakes hard and all of the hard tasks easy. Including running tests. If you don't know how to configure your IDE to do all these things take time and learn it. If you still can't figure it out, replace your IDE maybe...?
Also use the debugger. Preferably one that nicely integrates with your IDE. If you don't, check point 1.
Also write tests and *run them*.
Also if your misspellings tend to consist of a missing `s` at the end of a plural noun just call it `entityCollection` instead of `entities`. And read up on more good programming practices and naming conventions.7 -
1st. Put my Razor Blackshark Aviator headset on. Noise cancellation the low-tech way with full earcups.
2nd. I go on music genre binges for weeks at a time. Lately I've been listening to Viking inspired Dark Folk music like Wardruna, Fejd, Corvus Corax, and Forndom. That came after I did a month of proto rock n roll blues from the southern United States like Leadbelly, Blind Willie Johnson, and Mississippi John Hurt. I also drop some liquid DnB on a bender here and there.
3rd. I set up Hyper.is terminal to use the power plugin that makes sparks fly off of each keystroke.
4th. I set up Atom to work similarly with a continuous code counter that keeps a score of how long and fast you type continuously when coding. It also throws sparks off of the cursor as you type.
5th. Pop my neck and fingers and geterdun.2 -
The first time I accidentally activated multiple cursors(multiline editing feature) in my editor I thought this was a bug rather than a feature and was trying to figure out a way to get the cursor back to normal.
Few years down the line this feature has improved my coding speed a lot and I just laugh at myself remembering the first time I used it 😂
P.S. Screenshot attached for reference9 -
Will be unpopular with some, but I'm loving vs code more and more with each update.
I just accidentally spun the scroll wheel while the cursor was over the file tabs, they all scroll, making it easy to navigate to files that are open but off the tab display
🥰🥰🥰4 -
Recently I experienced a feeling of being fed up with the screenshot tools on Linux.
There's a build in one in Kubuntu called "Spectacle" which isn't really that much of a spectacle as it pushes my displays to the left until there's nothing left on my second screen and half of my first screen is missing.
There's Shutter, which has always been slow for me. Plus there's the fact that the cursor in "capture rectangle" mode is hard to see for me :v
There's Kazam which doesn't seem to allow me to select a save path from the terminal.
There are others of course, but I wasn't really going to bother and instead decided to ask myself "how hard would it be to make my own?"
Turns out not hard at all :v
I now have a screenshot tool which is fast, small, takes region captures and takes window captures.
I guess next step (if I can be bothered) is to set up slop+ffmpeg to do screen recordings

Former android fan, I’ve been using iPhone SE for a while, and now I’m ready to give feedback. We are talking about brand new, iOS 11.2.2 device, never jailbraked (jailbroken?) or made anything fucked up to.
The main problem is battery life. It’s poor. I mean, my cheap ass Meizu m3s stands for about three times longer. Now I always need to carry power bank or charger around, keeping it up from one outlet to another.
iOS 11 is unstable and flawed. Music widget on lock screen freezes randomly, ui falls apart sometimes, apps sometimes start in landscape mode. I never found android ui falling apart, just like webpage marked up by interns.
Transferring files to Linux PC is huge pain in the ass. Nuff said.
Aaaand... that’s all. There is literally only three problems present.
On the other hand, there is huge advantages over android:
Speed. It’s unbeatable. It’s absolutely stunning. Need camera? Here it is, quarter second away. Android camera needed straight 15 seconds to start up. Taking picture? Here it is, flawless as always. Zero motion blur, gamma is ideal, focus is so sharp so you may hurt your eyes. Need 100 pictures? Here you go, just press the button and hold it. Maybe s9 or another shiny ass android takes pictures as fast as iPhone, but I bet my iPhone will be taking pictures same flawlessly after 5 years, while your android will probably become sluggish ass piece of crap.
Not. A. Single. Fucking. Lag.
Asphalt 8? 60 FPS all the way down. 2GIS? Fraction of a second away. That’s it, that’s how it have to be.
Sound quality. Just as neat as my Sansa Clip. EarPods are crap, so I’m using my SE215. Not going to ever come back to Sansa. Xperia TX had much less quality audio btw.
Apps. As long as the whole enterprise world sucking Apple’s dick, apps are running silky smooth and the things are not going to change. Come on. Apple is the king nowadays, admit it or not.
Keyboard is amazing. Screen is amazing. It’s just that pleasing. The sounds iPhone makes are great, while android sounds piss me off and making me hold myself from throwing the phone straight to the wall.
iPhone makes me feel cared about. Everything is on it’s place, everything fits perfectly. You are watching YouTube, you need to adjust volume and volume bar appears as tiny strip on the very top, just to not distract you. Make screenshot, draw something on it, share and hit delete. Every action you need is one tap away. Look up word? One tap away. Position the cursor between words? Polished as fuck, here you go, have your handy magnifying glass. Adblock in safari? Install it from the App Store and it will be literally two taps away, right at the settings. No VPN needed. Safari doesn’t become slow with Adblock, it’s just the same amazingly fast browser, but without ads. And Apple Music is just one dollar a month for students, filled with high quality songs.
Even google apps working better on iOS.
The advantages are clear for me, while downsides aren’t significant. @irene, you wanted to know what I’ll tell after a while, so I’m saying it proudly:
I’m never ever coming back to android.12 -
Do you just click the mouse wheel to close a tab even though it's a pain on your finger? I don't know where I got this habit from. I'm too lazy to point the cursor to the X button.6

Just got a €1300 Asus at work. Beautiful machine, 4 cores, 16gb RAM,
BUT the trackpad sucks. Really sucks, as in you can't work with it. I'll be scrolling using two fingers, but half the time I just see the cursor going down. If you move the mouse-cursor to the top-right-most corner on Windows 10, a Win32 program and a UWP app when maximised, highlight and respond to the red-close button
An application made with Windows App SDK, does not. //tested with SDKv1.4, not overriding windows-made title bar
Probably coz of their window-margins with Msft's new found love of rounded corners.
Never thought Windows would be this blatantly horrible. Everything past 2020s Windows 10 has gone downhill. I wonder which top-guy left that lead to this downfall.7 -

How do you type with pairs of characters like () [] <> "" etc.?
Do you type them both, then move the cursor back and type the stuff inside or do you type the first of the pair, then type the stuff inside and then close it with the second of the pair?
I just realized I do both techniques, apparently randomly, which weirds me out.
Also my IDE often places the second character of the pair automatically.10 -
Tester has found an issue: controller input stops working when performing certain steps.
Creates a report and provides an attachment.
The attachment depicts some menu where, at first, the cursor moves around various options, then simply stops moving.
The problem:
Since this is a simple in-game recording, there is neither an overlay of the controller w/ a visual representation of the input actually being provided but not working, nor there is a camera recording available where I can see the tester pressing buttons on a controller.
For all I know, the tester put down the controller / stopped pressing buttons.
...I've also seen reports of animations not working... w/ fucking screenshots attached.
How the fuck can you see something not being animated in a fucking static picture?4 -
So my desktop just crapped itself big time... 😧
It has been having trouble booting for the past few weeks, going into a rave flashing all the monitors, but usually recovering after a couple of minutes.
Today a got even more rave and after 10 minutes and a forced reboot, all I get now is a cursor... 😢
Guess it's time to reinstall Windows, hopefully that will fix the missing icons and thumbnails too 😅1 -
In high-school we had comp science classes which obviously hardly had anything to do with real stuff. In fact, our teacher was really clueless, so we decided to fool her. I made a tiny app that took a screenshot and set it as its background while being full screen and with hidden cursor. So it basically looked as if the computer was frozen. I also made it so pressing alt+f4 would set the background to a fake BSOD image. Next class we fired it up, the teacher tried everything to unfreeze the computer. She obviously failed, so we told her to try alt+f4. BSOD came up, she tried to fix it by hitting on the side of the PC. That didn't work so she unplugged it from the wall socket. We barely managed to not burst out in laugh, it was absolutely hilarious 😂

Today i faced a "bug" which caused an element not to trigger a Bootstrap 3 accordion by klicking on it. Only on iOS/iPhone - Desktop and Android worked fine.
The actual problem was that almost the same structure worked fine on another website...
took me about 3 hours to figure out that the element which was supposed to trigger the accordion needs the css property 'cursor: pointer;'.
why the hell does a touch device, which got no coursor, need this property?!3 -

I ran my PHP script file in Firefox, only to be greeted by everything else but my webpage. I scanned through the errors and looked them up on Google. As I was only restricted to a basic text editor, I had no choice but to prepare myself to look through hundreds of lines of code spanning across different files in my project.
Minutes passed, found nothing. An hour has passed, and I can feel my brain power fading away into oblivion, but I still found nothing. I took a stab in the dark and made a few changes in the code, hoping that it'd solve the problem, only to be slapped with a big fat 'nope' in the browser. I lost all hope for the day and decided to give it a rest and come back tomorrow to try again.
New day, new me, fresh new energy to tackle the code! But after one failed attempt at debugging and I was back to the same state as yesterday.
But... at the corner of my eye, something at the end of a line caught my attention. I moved my cursor to that position, pressed the key on top of my pinky finger down, saved the file, and ran the script. It worked.
Who knew how problematic a single missing semicolon could be :34 -

Has anyone else encountered this issue with installing a distro before?
So my colleague has installed Elementary OS 5.0 and he recommended me to do the same (on my personal dual boot laptop). However after the installation it doesn't reboot after clicking the button, and when I turn my laptop off and on again I get the grub as I should, choose elementary, I get the login screen all fine. But after logging in I only get the wallpaper and my cursor. I can't even open a terminal...
I've searched my ass off and everyone is saying to wait around 5 minutes before everything shows up after which you get to install graphic drivers. I've tried that but nothing happened so I just left it for the night hoping I could at least open a terminal in the morning, but there is still only the wallpaper and cursor.
I've tried pretty much anything at this point but I just can't get it to function. Is there anyone that has had such an issue before that could share a solution?18 -

At home, I use Cursor, which is way better than GitHub Copilot, but at work I can't choose. One thing I particularly hate about GitHub Copilot is the way the chat panel appears in the left sidebar of VS Code, on top of the file explorer. That, and their useless, arrogant, and ignorant support (or whatever it should be called) .
I filed a ticket about this issue already in July. Their support claimed that one can already move the chat window to the right. But it doesn't work the way they suggested. In August, they asked me to provide a screen recording. So I went through the hassle of making a screen recording just to prove that dragging the chat window does ineed *not* work. I did my part so I was expecting them to do theirs. What do you think happened next? Nothing! Then, more nothing! And then, they just inadvertedly closed the ticket without a resolution or explanation.
Github, that's a pretty shitty way to treat your customers!11 -
While fetching data from a cursor, cursor.getString(cursor.getColumnIndex(COL_NAME)); was giving -1.
The issue? Did not call cursor.moveToFirst();
Was stuck on this for 3 days 😓 -
IOS keyboard is utter garbage. IOS as a whole is utter garbage, but the keyboard is the cream of the crop of garbage.
Wasting a user's time and destroying/changing the user's input against their wishes is malicious design of the highest order and this dumpster fire excels in it.
Type something completely valid and autocomplete changes it to something that doesn't makes sense. It not only gives you a terrible suggestion half the time, it will also change previous parts of the sentence that it somehow allowed you to keep. If you reject its suggestion, it deletes your current word and previous word(s), instead of restoring it to what it was before it made the terrible suggestion, like every other keyboard does.
Need to go back and adjust your sentence? If you tap it will hijack the cursor and highlight the nearest word it doesn't like instead of moving the cursor where you touch. If you accidentally hit a character on the cramped and unusable keyboard, congrats, you get to type the word again.
I know about hold space to drag the cursor.
I don't want Apple to decide for me that I actually wanted to go to the closest word it doesn't like, or the current word, or the next word based on a dice roll. I want the cursor to go where I tap. Like literally every other input device functions.
Want readily accessible numbers and punctuation? lol no
I know there's gboard, but compared to Android it's also almost unusable. This leads me to believe the keyboard is little more than a skin over the IOS keyboard engine, like Safari, another IOS dumpster fire. But, it is slightly better than the stock keyboard, which isn't saying much.
I yearn, minute by minute, for the time I can ditch this dumpster fire for a real phone.11 -
If you start sweeping a fly off the monitor with the mouse cursor, it's time to turn off the computer. 😵💫

When I was in 5th grade, my school had bought few computers (I don't remember on which OS they were running back in 1999) and they'd installed Logo on it.
For those who are not familiar with Logo, it was a programming language for educational purpose. The main highlight of this programming language was, it had a graphical on-screen cursor called "Turtle". Users had to type in commands to make this cursor move on the screen. Like "Right 90" would turn the cursor by 90 degrees.
This was my first official exposure to a computer. -
The prank happened last 2 years ago. Me and my office mate we love to prank inside the office using our technical skills. One time while our target is on break we took an exact screenshot of his desktop and we manage to hide both cursor and his entire desktop exept the screenshot of his desktop.
After half an hour, the target approach us to fix his issue he restarted the PC multiple times and we laugh so hard because he said his PC keeps hanging or freeze. Hahaha LMAO.
Then after we laugh we reveal that his PC is fine we just replace his desktop with a fake desktop image. He even laugh on our prank hahaha.
Did you prank your office mate the same prank we did? Haha I would advice choose carefully who to prank.7 -
vi keys suck, using hjkl to navigate the cursor is so unnecessarily unintuitive.
Who cares about the "muh homerow keys"15 -
Filtering stored procedures by name in SQL Management Studio. Enter name and press enter. Cursor goes to next cell, instead of submitting.
I do this every single time. -
React app, on mongodb 3.6 and mongoose 5.0.17
Still cant use tje aggregate function without a cursor. Anyhelp ? -
iPhone alarm clock suddenly stopped playing sounds this week (again), fortunately my wake up time is not critical.
After every major osx upgrade I feel that I need to restart macbook more and more often cause system suddenly hangs.
Yesterday I spotted that after each restart there is information that if system hangs on login screen for a while I should restart computer again ( well thanks for advice that I don’t have to wait till I die ).
Cursor randomly disappears after I connected microsoft usb mouse ( microsoft mouse eating cursor from apple windows ).
Why I use microsoft mouse you ask ? That’s the best thing microsoft made, it’s literally indestructible. I dropped and kicked that mouse hundred times, still works perfectly fine.
I think also somehow osx forced minor bug fix upgrade once without my permission so they’re slowly going the forgotten microsoft path that is always forcing updates you don’t want to install in this particular moment.
Because their engineers know better when and why I want to update.
Looks like Apple engineering is slowly degrading or QA care less about older hardware users.
I am not used to buy new shit when old works just fine, those shiny little things are my work tools not something I show around to impress people how cool I am.
That’s all disappointing but still better then windows experience cause didn’t reinstalled osx from scratch since almost 5 years and it’s working at the same speed like it was new ( not impressed linux users here but from my previous experience with windows “registry” that means something and this hardware already paid for itself).6 -
Just installed my first Ubuntu ever.
I my second monitor isn't working and I can't see my cursor.😁9 -
Why the fuck can websites use non-standard cursors? Why the fuck does Wikia allow you to do this? Why the fuck is Wikia a thing?4
-
Every time I move the cursor in a file or press alt+tab I hear bed springs squeaking. It's getting annoying :/4

"What makes great design great is not a trendy technique, but the logic and conceptual aspect that were figured out in the designer’s mind – or on more likely, on paper – before a mouse cursor ever opened Photoshop. " - Kyle Meyer2

So, i successfully installed steam! nice right
well nvidia decided to fuck me over after i rebooted, and i'm stuck at the blank screen with a cursor blinking after choosing arch linux. i ran nvidia-xconfig prior to this. i'm actively googling the problem now, but any tips you guys could drop are welcome!2 -
Somewhat new to Linux and tried to install it on my usb so I don't affect my computer. Installed and an error saying could not install bootloader and booting from that usb just shows a blinking cursor and trying to boot back to Windows shows grub rescue as it doesn't recognise something. Might have to experiment with changing from legacy BIOS to UEFI. But I just hope nothing has happened to my windows4

sweaty_decision_meme.jpg
- Debugging some application locally (with debugger)
- 20-30 manual step-ins, tracking those values VERY closely
- debugger becomes a little sluggish
- move mouse to select a line to jump to
- cursor is lagging: all jumpy and everything
- CTRL+ALT+F1
- everything freezes.
sooo...either reboot the laptop and lose all the work, or wait for OOMK to kick in, which could be hours, depending on the level of memory starvation.13 -
That feeling when you realize that the REST API you were trying to consume apparently does not provide a query flag to get for a more detailed response making you think you'll need to fetch one list of items and then fire almost 1,000 requests really does not compare to that feeling when a colleague points out that the REST API in question does in fact support the flag AFTER you implemented the roundabout way.
FUCKING HELL!
I just didn't realize that I could click on GET and POST blocks for the metronome API documentation opening up a frigging pop-up. (See screenshot.)
Why couldn't the information have been more upfront? Only a cursor change on hovering the area could make one thing to click there.
Oh how I blame their lack of a user interface for my blindness.
I thought that it was just a basic documentation that only told you which endpoints exist and expects you to learn by trial of fire. So I searched the interwebs and on their support forum I found an old issue making me think that my round-about way was the way to go m(
Even worse, on the support forum I cannot even leave a comment warning the poor souls comming after me that they should not do the roundabout way as that issue has been long closed.

Today I tried running Plasma Wayland again after a few months...well...I tried
What did I experience?
- Mouse cursor size jumping from small to big randomly
- Can't remember fucking window positioning between multiple workspaces, so when I reboot, all windows are in the last workspace
- Random freezes with external monitor plugged in
- Firefox scrolling is absolutely terrible, 5 fps at most, but only when external monitor is connected
- Mouse acceleration can't be completely turned off? Or the setting just didn't work? IDK
- Sometime I get the infamous window trail effect known from older Windows versions, but on mouse cursor4 -
Failed installing Arch Linux....tried installing it three times
But at every boot what I get is Black screen with the cursor (underscore) blinking on it
I followed their official installation guide
Do anyone know how to resolve this problem?12 -
I just recently stumbled over qutebrowser, a keyboard-centered FOSS-browser. It can be used with vim-commands exclusively, so no mouse needed. The only downside is that it doesn't seem to support plugins. Perfect for people like me who keep losing their cursor 😅2

Took Intro to Development workshop for beginners and found this mind-blowing bug !!!
print(" connection established '')
Found anything strange? neither did I, but suddenly my cursor went in-between the inverted commas xd.
The Noob had started the sentence using double inverted commas and ended with 2 single inverted commas.
After Debugging I was Like !!!1 -
WHY DOES EVERYTHING BREAK WHEN I WANT TO DEPLOY?
Finally fixed the last few bugs on my project and the thing is pretty much set to go. Then both the production and my local copy (identical in every way except for connecting to different MySQL servers) have the EXACT same query issues. The cursor fetch methods ALL get nothing EVEN WHEN I CAN SEE THE CURSOR HAS THE DATA I REQUESTED in the debugger.
I'm already in hot water for taking longer than expected with this project and this is going to push it back even further. -
Working on some documentations on MS word and I'm pressing ctrl+space for auto complete!!🤣🤣🤣 Not only that ctrl+click for multiple cursor!!! 😂😂😂😂😂2

Grr.
I have been struggling with schema compare and editing anything SQL related in Visual Studio for a couple of weeks now. Cursor constantly flickering, can't click on anything, and actually running the compare results in Visual Studio disappearing in puff of smoke.
I'd put it down to an update, but then this week's update didn't fix it.
Turns out it is a "feature" that Microsoft has been refusing to fix for over a year now, where none of the SQL stuff in VS works properly on a 4k external monitor. And of course I only started trying to use that stuff on my 4k monitor since I have been working from home.
Dragging VS across to the laptop screen solves the problem (and is the Microsoft fix), but I think I now need to visit the optician to get new glasses to see WTF is going on. -
So I got the new macbook pro 15 with touchbar .... this is my first macbook that I have ‚issues‘ with.
* the new butterfly keaboard doesnt feel as good as the old one
* ... abd its friggin loud!
* the keyboard backlight just randomly drops out and forces me to cold reboot WTF??
* they bigger left/right cursor buttons make it so hard to feel where you are, that I constantly confuse up and down
* the touchbar is basically unusable for a keyboard centric person like me. It forces me too look down to the keys!
* I constantly hit the esc bc im used to have one finger there to hit it if needed, but now im forced to hover it bc otherwise it is pressed
* and why of fucking why did apple remove magsafe??? Now i dont even see anymore if is is being charged without turning the screen on
* i hate the usb ports too, why not even add a free usbc to usba port? (Well, i guess bc it would make the macbook even more expensive... free wouldnt be free anyway i guess)
It is way more powerful though, but the time i would buy a personal one is over and will probably never come back.
Im a happy hackintosh user btw 😅3 -
I’m paying for GitHub Copilot and it is serving me well in about 40% of the cases. It is nice to not have to type entire utility methods. Sometimes it also try-catches things that I wouldn’t generally do with a new library that I haven’t used before. Pretty cool.
I also used the Cursor IDE, that isn’t very useful in general cases, but helped me read and understand a horrible piece of 200 line-function with extremely cryptic variable names. Sadly, my free quota there ended.
I hope GitHub Copilot Chat is better at explaining things.2 -
Has anyone experience in implementing a language server? I am currently working on a php language server and can’t wrap my head around how to efficiently find the correct scope/token from a cursor position ... like I would need to jump right into the middle of the AST somehow.
On another note I already fought the borough checker for 3 hours straight so might just go and read how the rust language server was implemented.
But I would still like to pull some experience from you if you have been through this already2 -

Well not really a CS teacher but it did happen to me during my uni days.
I had joined a marketing class as an elective since my Information Systems degree did have some business related stuff thrown in there.
One day the lecturer strutted in all smug and told us to take out a sheet of paper and we were gonna have a surprise test.
He has the test on a pen drive , apparently it was just 2 open ended type questions he was gonna plug into the class pc and send it to the projector screen.
To this day i have no clue what the hell he did, but that smug bastard managed to delete the test permanently 😂
He popped it in and we saw a few files there he selected them and was about to either drag to desktop or open them , the cursor changed to the wait hourglass , he right clicked and refreshed as if it would
Do anything but .... PooF.... Bye test 👋
He took the pen drive out and plugged it in again, but couldn't find the test file
He scowled then checked the desktop and recycle bin, nope 👎
He took his pen drive and silently walked out....
The other IT students and I were in stitches 😂2 -
Once the WebExtensions process of Firefox crashes, one must restart each extension individually.
This means one has to open the add-on manager and double-click these small toggles with the cursor. When one does not double-click fast enough, the listed extension moves from the "enabled" down to the "disabled" section, and the add-on manager lacks a search feature, (Ctrl+F just actuates the "Search addons.mozilla.org" search bar), meaning one has to manually scroll and find it.
It almost seems like it is deliberately designed to annoy users.6 -
Out of NOwhere, VSCode moves the cursor instead of scrolling horizontally when I use the two-fingers sideways gesture on the touchpad.
Very angry, very sad, I hope it fixes itself just as spontaneously as it happened.5 -
Today I've learned: the change event doesn't fire if the content of an input has not been changed. If you have "5", select it and in its place input "5", the cursor will be moved but the event will not be fired.3

Android studio,
I'm in love with the multiple cursor
And with the thing that you can right click +Ctrl vars/classes/files/functions
And it will take you to them/to where they are mentioned -
Like pull-to-refresh, auto-selecting the file name in "save as" dialogues is a design trend we are perpetuating without questioning its usefulness.
The "rename" feature of file managers and the file name fields in "Save as" dialogues and screenshot tools automatically select file names without the ending, expecting the user to want to replace it.
It would more sense to place the cursor between the file name and the ending ".png".
I can't remember the last time I replaced a file name. I almost always rename files to add a comment or time stamp at the end.
Adding a comment after the time stamp, for example, "Screenshot at 2024-02-04 12-04-37 progress bar.png", makes more sense than replacing the file name. A file name with a time stamp is more easily searched.7 -
Anybody else getting annoyed with VSCode lately? I’m constantly getting updates to the editor and various plugins that add near-forced autocomplete suggestions, cursor hijacking, codelens and inlay hints (messes up spacing and layout), etc. It’s starting to drive me crazy! Just let me write my code! I love the syntax highlighting and autocomplete, but developer tools need to be optional, not have their off button buried behind some 5-layer JSON object that’s not documented anywhere!
I just want to write code, and I want my editor to be a tool, not an annoying little bee swarming my face all the time trying to get me to do things I don’t want to do! Microsoft and plugin devs need to stop enabling these obtrusive features by default and put them behind a “New Features” wizard or something!3 -
program, which should save report from db to file, running a couple of minutes:
1) despite prefetch precompiler option no fetch was prefetched, because for every next line fetch cursor was reopened with condition WHERE some_val > prev_val
2) allocated array of host variables to fetch 100 rows per call to db client api
program is running under 3 seconds now -
If you're on the Threads page in Slack, why is there no keyboard shortcut to expand new messages and put your cursor in the text box?!?? Using the mouse is slowly killing me on the inside...4

Any suggestions for a good enough laptop to learn Android/iOS development in?
I tried with my brother's fairly newer laptop and it was slooooooooooow. *cries inside while watching cursor goes from one point to another*5 -
Idk if It's my luck or something, but as much as I love Microsoft, EVERY fucking thing of it that I use, has bugs.
I report them, they get fixed (eventually)
but goddamn.
Visual Studio enterprise taking 2mins+ to report a simple error on debug
That error happens within one of Microsoft's Nuget Packages for OneDrive Enterprise for UWP
Oh and if that wasn't bad enough, my machine is a Surface Book 2 and the cursor still stutters through it all (and on idle half the time)
Am I cursed or something?2 -
For the guys who uses pop! os ( apparently ubuntu breaks on rtx 3070 and don’t have the patience to find the proper drivers ) and i3wm how do you manage the scaling / dpi on different monitors ( i have 4 of them: 4k, 2k, 1920 and ultrawide 2560x1080 ) and apparently on 3 of them the cursor and font is fucking huge and on the 4k is too small. Tried scaling them manually using xrandr but it still doesn’t look right .6
-
ok so every time i turn on kali on virtualbox the whole laptop freezes and i the cursor moves 10mm per minute so i have to restart it every time
why is this happening?10 -
My computer after installing Solus has some pretty weird behavior.
It is with the keyboard and the mouse. The keyboard often writes the highlighted part, which is super annoying, because I have this habit of using the highlighted feature as a scrollbar, so if I am using this feature to scroll in the terminal, when I am editing, the keyboard will paste the content of the highlighted text when I am typing randomly, which is why I have to highlight a space, and also why I have to put my cursor to where I am typing to prevent it from randomly teleporting. And the mouse often left click / right click randomly, and sometimes the cursor has a seizure.
This is not something that happens to me recently. It has been happened to me when I was using Manjaro (which was way long ago), and at that time only the seizure cursor is happened. Now more stuff happened, and they are happening more frequently than ever.
The Internet on my computer is also terrible today, I cannot access to any website on the browser (Until now). I first thought that it's my browser (Brave)'s fault and I tried on Firefox, also not working. I tried to reconnect to the Wi-Fi, reboot the computer, nothing worked. Then I think of switching between Wi-Fis, because it's a strat that worked with my phone, and surprisingly, it worked!
(I really don't know what to end this rant, so I will just put this text here as a way to end the rant.) -
!rant , a question (on the end, after explanation) :
https://youtube.com/watch/...
this is a result of (according to my time tracking) 10 hours and 50 minutes of coding.
captures mouse cursor into list of points, uses those to triangulate a flat polygon (manually doing all the mesh math of ordering them correctly, earclip triangulating, and indices generating), as well as to create inner and outer outline (no official algorithm, my own which I came up with on the spot) of a certain thickness.
(the outline drawing is just for debug yet, now I'm going to extrude them upwards to form walls)
soooo... I've been always curious about how effective/fast/efficient of a programmer I am, but it's usually hard to measure/compare, so I thought I'd try this way: how long do you think implementing something like this would take YOU?
thanks :)5 -
First try on Debian to deploy dev environment, can't fix the grey screen cross cursor vnc issue with gnome regardless whatever solution on the internet.
Screw this shit wasted plenty my time. Reinstalled back CentOS 6. -
An update to that text editor thing that no one cares:
Now it has a default font (although it looks like horseshit), and a "working" cursor. It is also set to fullscreen by default, and remove the separate piece between the editor and the status bar. -
It is incomprehensible to me
why fucking piece shite visual studio not supporting horizontally scroll and multi cursor
(its have a very very simple multi cursor, if press alt and click and move mouse but its suck because, a online editor very better than this piece shite ) -
In Visual Studio 2017, when an error occurs and you hover your cursor over it, you cannot copy the fucking error to do a Google Search. Who was the idiot that didn't think this through?
The ONLY way is to go to the separate Error List in the bottom, and even then I can only copy all or nothing.
Man, fuck Unity for not having a better default IDE already...1 -
fact..
you move your mouse, when it comes on cursor while typing
even though you know it just one character you have to type to go ahead of it..1 -
*Ctrl + a*
*retarded auto-indent code shortcut key*
*Presses arrow key instinctively*
*moves cursor to end or start of code*
Am I the only one? -
It kinda sucks that 8-core cpu and 14-core gpu is starting and that is for $1999 😭
I wish they provided 10-core cpu at that price
But all the ports are back and mag-safe is here also 😁, anyone hovering cursor over the order button ?
It’s so tempting but i will wait for the reviews17 -
I wonder who has the idea of showing the opposite of the parenthesis. Like when I move my terminal cursor to the open parenthesis of a pair, it will show the end (the close paren) of that pair. It makes me confused so many times.3

Illusion of interactivity: switching back to a tab with an open google document in google docs, I see a cursor, but it's not yet accepting input, only after I click anywhere inside the document. Might be due to lazy loading browsers tabs, but anyway this is irritating.1
