assignment: use winAPI to create a "virus" that put itself in autorun and does nothing.
me, a curious student: does the assignment and adds a heap corruption code just as a joke.
after sending the assignment to the teacher I realized that I have sent the real virus.
result: teacher comes next lesson without a computer and stares at me silently and viciously.
we'll see what happens next
any idea on what's going on in his head?28 -
tl;dr don't, just don't.
A curious little me (12-14 years) just stated using the family shared computer.
And he thought: It's so slow! Maybe I can make it faster, my parents would be happy!
So he looked at this little switch on the back and he switched it from 230 to 115.
Not knowing what he did, he turned the PC on... for the last time.
Smoke, a nasty smell and a loud bang were the last memories left behind.
The parents were not happy.34 -
"I don't like the people in this town, they're so empty."
"I don't have a girlfriend, all the girls in here are so empty."
"I prefer reading over scrolling down through Facebook feeds, because books teach you something."
This time those words didn't come from me.. as it so happens that the guy who recently moved into the apartment next door is an aerospace engineer, also diagnosed with autism (I suspect Asperger) and apparently a curious brainiac as well. Guess I've just found myself a new friend.. right next door 😋30 -
This happened just a few meters of me.
IT Guy: What happened sir?
IT Manager: WTF does the variable a4g646g54a6g54a65g654ag546a654g56a?
~awkward silence~
Still curious.2 -
Me: "Ugh. Soo insensitive.." *angry muttering*
Curious cousin: "Whom? What? Why?"
Me: "My stupid Mac is not case sensitive so I have to mount a Unix partition and reference it from somewhere else. Why wouldn't they just make a case sensitive filesystem like a proper Unix based OS?"
Clearly uninterested cousin: "seriously?! You called your laptop insensitive? I thought you were talking about a guy" ..
Filthy casuals.6 -
Last month I discovered my girlfriend created a GitHub account some time ago just because she saw the icon was like a cat in the Discord Connections settings and was curious about what it was.
That's the most adorable dev-related thing that has ever happened to me.10 -
Probably the jankiest fan that I've ever built 😂
I just need it to not sweat gallons on the bus and needed it to be done quick and dirty to not miss the bus so meh.. kinda curious about the looks that I'll get for using this thing to cool myself though 🙃5 -

Didn't uninstall DevRant😁
Coz it is resourceful and fruitful conversations are not worth to be missed even during exam time!
Exams got me like this 😣
Btw Which social apps do you use on daily basis ? Just curious to know 😅43 -
Hey fellow developers
How did you all come to know about DevRant? Just curious
.
.
.
Well I got to know about while stalking my potential bf social media 😅😝53 -
Just curious, how is it like to work as a developer. I mean, as a profession and not a hobby or freelancing.
From devRant, so far I know that you work in an office, the managers and bosses are assholes, and people always write unmanageable and undocumented code.
What else is it like? Do you get to work alone or do you have to work with people? Do you stay there all day long?
I know its still going to be a while for me, but I want to know how it will be like.24 -
So I been telling Cox no to upgrading my modem for the past 2 months, my modem works fine, so now last night the modem just stops working, the internet is out and I call support, I tell them the problem and they without even thinking ask what version of modem I have, I tell then gen 2,they then offered a upgrade for free and the old gen 2 ones were not working lately, I reluctantly agreed to swap them for free, so after I got off the phone I was curious, I decided to packet sniff and find all my data is being sent just fine, but once it reaches the Cox main gateway it just drops the packet, I even pinged the DNS and it responded fine, turns out they just shut my connection off and basically forced me to upgrade to their gen 3 enhanced Wi-Fi bullshit8

Did anyone else find Javascript fun and easy to learn?
Or am I doing something wrong?
Just curious.11 -
Just noticed that the Firefox mobile browser plays YouTube video in the background.
I am curious... Bug or feature10 -
Yesterday I started programming a telegram bot. First approach. Just curious.
Pretty impressed.
It's well documented and funny.5 -

Just stumbled upon this channel of a woman called Jeri Ellsworth.. turns out that she's interested in HAM radio. This is something that I'm personally interested in as well, and seeing how the community here seems to have a keen interest in electronics, I figured that I might want to put it out there. After all, knowledge is to be shared :)
Also she's apparently self-taught as well which I think is really impressive. That's what - to me at least - separates the "I do it just for the money" people from the genuinely interested ones, and the spoonfed bunch from the curious few.
https://youtube.com/channel/...8 -
If you had to use one laptop for programming on a daily basis and nothing else, which one would you choose? And I'm talking about to work and back home, and you can't use another monitor either.
The GPD pocket windows or the Acer Predator?
Obviously I'm not getting any of those. I'm just curious.
Someone as scrawny as me probably won't be able to carry the Acer Predator, and it discriminates against lefties. The pocket windows is too small for anything, but it is adorable.12 -
I was never interested in programming. I was just good with computers and it felt really good watching other students struggling with something I'm really good at. I was unbelievably bad at everything in my life until I got introduced with computers.
.
.
.
And suddenly I became curious about everything thing related to computers, how? Why? Started asking these questions to myself and fucked my life.1 -
Just joined this Linux Development Team Xenta OS, it originated in my country, Im asking for a favor to check it out and seeing what needs improvements...
If you are curious and want to help out , check it out in 'xentaos.org'15 -
Who here programs when they're not at work? If you do, do you have your own side projects or games? I'm just curious 😁14

How often do women bring up their own gender in tech interviews? I've never done it, and I've never interviewed anyone, but I'm curious about whether it's ever explicitly mentioned (beyond a, "I'm in a women in tech group" or "I mentor young girls in my free time").
I don't want to start any debates. Just curious about what people on the Other Side of the Table see.20 -
Nooooo !
I fucked up !
Please tell me what is going to happen if a pentester fucks up ?
I was just curious about the codes the developer was typing remotely while they were containing important datas :/
Fuck me ! I thought it would be nice if i take some pictures of that amazing code so the other employees misunderstood !!
They think I was stealing data ! 😭
What should I do ?
What can I tell them ?21 -
So if you guys had a variable with an "ID" in it, would you write it like this:
"var userId;"
or like this:
"var userID;"
?
Just curious.43 -
I just watched this documentary called "take your pills" and seeing the weird programmer they interviewed I got curious about how many DevRanters use Addy as a coding booster? Would you consider it just a normal performance enhancer like caffeine? Have you tried it?
I've only noticed coffee heads like myself here and I was wondering if some of the people that aren't are against the use of Adderall too.
I'd love to hear some thoughts on the subject.37 -
Curious. Who uses .jpeg instead of .jpg and is that because your software is defaulted that way. It just bugs me.14

!Rant
I hope that my daughter takes an interest in STEM stuff. I’m going to introduce it early on for her. (She’s only 9 months old right now) but I’m admittedly nervous that she won’t have a hyper curious nature as she grows up. I was always super curious about learning about how things work, even though my parents never gave two thoughts about it. I don’t think that being curious and wanting to explore the inter-workings of stuff is learned so I’m just hoping she is a curious little-shit like I was as a kid hahaha.15 -
@dfox @trogus Hi, I was just wondering how to find the privacy policy? If I am missing it, sorry!
My question is about who owns the rants. It doesn't matter either way, I am just curious.17 -
Stay curious and open-minded. If you hear something new take some 5-10 min and Google it. You will surprise much people even if you know just basics.
And if you're a fast learner, be aware, some people will be intimidated and try to oust you. But stay positive! -
Curious, does anyone else that’s been in the tech/IT field for more than 5 years feel like we’re just solving the same problem over and over again, albeit with different tools as the years go by? Or am I just too grumpy to stay in this field after trudging it out for 20+ years?2
-
Just curious.
Has anyone ever had to face the wrath of the people they were ranting about here in devRant?
I introduced my reporting manager to this network, and I have done some amount of ranting about him.
I guess you could say 'danger' is my middle name.3 -
Rant on anti devs.
I helped my friend crack a fairly simple hackerank. The questionnaire was basic JavaScript questions and little on CSS selectors nth child. The test is finished in half hour instead of 75 mins.
5 months later. He calls again and ask if he can get the question solutions (code snippets). I didn't have those but curious why he needed it. He says he wants to put that solutions to Github. So would look on resume. This is not even a project just code snippet with a for loop. He just wants any codebase to upload to his profile.
My ears are bleeding. It makes me sad that some people had to do Masters in computer science purely out of societal pressure. Just because software development is booming field a lot of folks who are not genuinely interested in development are being forced into the industry.6 -
I present to you the rubber duck I use for debugging.
that's right I dont have one. I just to talk to myself really. but what's curious is that when I do this, I tend to cock my head to a side, or turn slightly in my chair as if I was talking to someone just behind me. I didnt realize I was doing this until my cousin pointed it out to me coz it was creeping her out.
let me also mention that I used to have an imaginary friend growing up. his name's Jesse. I dont know if it really is just a weird mannerism or maybe I was still subconsciously talking to him.3 -
Does anyone know of any apps/companies that are using .Net core in production?
I’ve started a project at work which consists of a webapi written in dotnet core, a react spa for the front end and xunit for testing.
I’m just curious as there are loss of sites about things written in Rails, or django, but almost nothing about dotnet core.8 -
was devrant way more visited during those good ol' covid days? i can't help but feel like i see a maximum of 100 people around now... feels weird to me, probably feels normal to those who have been here longer
curious what happened, maybe just the insane users remaining scared off all the plebs19 -
Step 1. Have no dissertation project.
Step 2. Wait for the last 3 hours till the deadline to come up with an idea.
Step 3. Realise that your just-thought-up project idea is something companies like Google and Amazon are still trying to figure out. But there is no time left.
Step 4: Approach your supervisor with the words "Imagine the possibilities". They respond with "Imagine the difficulty".
Step 5: They sign on it regardless since they are curious to see you fuck up with style, also you are too much in love with your idea already, and refuse to drop it.
Step 6: fml4 -
A funny story I just remember while my code is compiling :
Back in high school, in Math, we were taught how algorithm works, and we made some exercises with practical examples.
I didn't know anything about it back then, so was curious. Was pretty fun, but one day, my teacher said that a IF is a loop. I said "no, this is a test" but she keeps saying that it was a loop, ignoring me (I dunno if she actually heard me) and no one actually noticed it as she repeated it several times (while I was saying that it's not). I just gave up trying to say it's wrong.8 -
Weirdest morning in a while:
- good morning!
_ good morning
* walk over to colleagues desk to see what he’s working on pure out of interest*
_what do you want?
-nothing just curious
_do you want to fight?
-wtf?
The more i work with fellow developers the more i realize the special kind of people we actually are.8 -
Hi devs,
i am just curious, how often you use devrant.
to be honest,.. if my life is good.. no bugs. no miss management. I don't even remember devrant exist..
but as soon as I got frustrated from code, management, life.. Devrant is the first thing I type of my browser before starting any work :P3 -
Damn, this delicate 15.6" piece of plastic I call my laptop is the reason I have to tolerate stupid curious college-mates. Whenever I open it, everyone is like woah dude, you are a coder! does it have porn ? or games ?
yeah mann fuck you . its 2018 , I don't play pc games and I can watch porn online . can you fucktards just leave me alone and let me work ?
Why don't we have cheap laptops with good specs but smaller screens? like 7" or 9"
fucking CSE college pervs acting like babies :/8 -
Just upgraded my Ubuntu 16.10 to 17.04. It destroyed my PC. I knew it would happen but I was curious because they asked me on every system startup :/14

Serious question: why all the hate on PHP?
I've been using it as my main language, and genuinely like it. Tried Java but find that to be typing a fuckload to get the same task done. Javascript is nice, but still, i prefer PHP (probably mostly because i know it).
Just really curious, what have i been missing?14 -
Yo @dfox @trogus, I know I’ve been a pain in the ass lately with my connectivity issues etc, 🤪 but on the auto renewal for devRant++, the transaction (to my knowledge) has successfully went through (can provide screen shot) but I haven’t received it. Not rant, just curious if it’s something in my end, I want to continually support this amazing community.6
-
to the guys saying "oop is dumb" / "i don't need oop" / "i've never worked with oop"...
i have some questions:
- which language are you working with
- which problems are you solving
- how big is your code base
- how do you maintain readability of your code?
don't get me wrong, i don't believe that oop is always the answer. i'm just curious which fields these statements are coming from. if they all come from a low level (assembler, C, ..) or functional languages or "scripty" languages (python, JS), or if there are also people working with languages like C++ where oop is pretty much established. and if the latter, i'm curious how people design their code and what problems they solve... tell me your story :D30 -
// Define this isn't a rant.
this.isRant = false;
So just curious if there are any dev stroke artists on here that might be willing to lend me a hand with some prototype art...
Just need some character sprites made into modular pieces and a few edits.
Didn't know anywhere else to post this :-(10 -
Not gonna lie. I’m in the mood to make a game and I’m gonna try it. I think it’ll be fun. Wish me luck!
For anyone curious I’m gonna be using Godot because it’s not bad and It’s not nearly as fat as Unreal and Unity. They’re not bad just not what I want rn.6 -
How do you get your Dev stickers? Do you gather them on events or do you actually buy them? And where do you buy them?
I am just curious about the best strategy...😅5 -
How are improperly tagged posts handled? In order for the categories to work, it'll require cooperation from the users. I've also noticed some posts that weren't tagged correctly. Just curious 🤷2
-
Why the fuck are you making me put in my email to look at a computer desk? I saw an ad and was curious about it and the price, so I clicked the ad. I don't give a shit and don't actually plan to buy anything, just let me look asshats.
Shit like this is why you have an email inbox with 650,087 emails about a fucking privacy policy update.2 -
Not really a rant but just curious who listens to podcasts and which channel is your favorite?
Mine are Software Engineering Radio and InfoQ4 -
Hi devRant;
What’s your opinion on ‘open source’
Pros for and cons against its use. I’m curious
Reason for my question
I just met a programmer on the bus who is vehemently against open source starting he goes out of his way to not use anything ‘open source’
I myself use open source tools everyday in both my programming classes and outside projects. I vehemently believe the global collaboration potential of the open source concept is key to building bigger and better software and hardware in the future9 -
#1 Don't go looking to clear your doubts with your mentor. Instead, try and figure everything on your own. Trust me, that'll teach you a lot more than you think rather than by getting the answers directly spoon-fed to you from your mentor.
#2 Always keep a curious mind if you want to achieve something in what you do. You can't learn anything if you don't have the curiosity to ask the right questions - why? (mostly). Especially if you're just starting your career.1 -
Is anyone here living Google free?
I've switched to using DuckDuckGo and ProtonMail for a while now, but I still find YouTube to be unreplaceable.
And also all the Google stuff on Android, like the play store and other integrations.
I know there's F-Droid and ROMs I might be able to install that wouldn't use any google service; just curious if some have done this successfully.21 -
Just curious; what kind of music do you guys listen to while coding? I tend to listen to all kinds of instrumental music, which I find great for keeping focus.
Please do share if you're sitting on a great playlist for coding, it's always fun to listen to something new!20 -
I'm curious, what was the most ridiculously otherworldly, the least understandable, eye-opening code you have every seen?
BUT, I mean that in a good way. And what did you learn from it?
For me personally, I would probably say some of the c++ stdlib implementations. Just totally not English in some places. I mean seriously, sometimes asm is more readable than c++15 -
Curious. What's your definition of a full stack developer?
Is it just about knowing all necessary languages? Does it also include various business oriented soft-skills? What about handling server and stuffs?
It is a new term I have been seeing a lot lately (especially after 2016, if I'm not wrong). Of course, I could google and look for the answers but I prefer to know devrant community edition 😀6 -
Hey hardware hackers, just wanted to let you know that seeedstudio offers free PCB assembly. I got 5 pieces of the PCB in the picture for 30 USD manufactured, assembled and shipped (including BOM costs), the also included 5 additional empty PCBs. However I paid another 30$ for customs and DHL customs handling (I'm inside Europe) ... But still, for assembly it's a great price, took around 4 weeks. Just upload the BOM and you get an instant quote. If you are curious, it's a simple board for an ESP32 with some mosfet drivers and two DC-DC converters.
https://seeedstudio.com/free-assemb...4 -
What are your favorite distros for Linux? I'm new to Linux so I'm just curious on what's out there that you guys use most and what's most convenient for development! Also can I PLEASE get some upvotes I want an avatar so bad lol8
-
I'm genuinely shocked at the number of people I see on here bashing automated testing as a waste of time, simply because my entire career has taught me the opposite (and it's usually only non-technical managers I see who don't want to see "time wasted" writing tests.)
I'm also just as genuinely curious - what do you guys do instead? Just don't test and deal with production issues as they occur? Pass it off to a separate UAT / human-based testing department and let them sign it off? Assume that because you're using Haskell / some other discipline it'll work if it compiles?14 -
I never understood the ‚space vs tabs‘ war ...
Tabs can do everything that spaces can plus more:
* look the same as spaces, but its width is configurable (at least in a decent editor)
* the safe space (1 byte vs 3 or 4)
* you can decrease the intendation leven with one bsckspace keypress in every(!) editor.
So the winner can only be tabs? Why would I even limit myself with spaces?
I dont wanna start a flame war, just curious what you guys (especially the spaces lovers) think about it11 -
Privacy peeps, what's your opinion on usage of surveillance for national defence, domestic security, etc. ?
I'm just curious, most privacy-minded people I know generally trip up when confronted with stuff like "yeah, but if surveillance was a thing then that blast which killed 20 people yesterday could have been averted."
I've heard quite a few opinions on both sides, what's yours?18 -
Dear fellow devs who use Notepad++ as their primary code editor,
Why? I’m curious why you prefer it instead of Sublime Text, VSCode, or Atom? I’m not saying it’s better or worse than other programs, I’m just curious. I’ve tried to use it recently (although it was my first code editor I’ve ever used) and it really felt bulky to me.
Sincerely, Athlon.6 -
Can anyone recommend some android alternatives?
I'm not looking to move away from android permanently but I'm just curious, I enjoyed my time with UBports (fuck QT) and seeing projects like the PinePhone and Librem 3 just get me curious what is actually out there.
Currently rocking a pixel 2 XL but not shy on buying new hardware to test stuff out as long as it's within reason.
Currently had a look at PureOS (not available) and Sailfish, any others to give a whirl?6 -
Just curious on an opinion from other Devs who don't actually work as a programmer...
Would you want to?
I currently work in retail and have a dream job as a genetic engineer majoring in dormant diseases (eg cancers) and personally would never take a job where I will be programming, never merge a hobby and a profession...
Am I alone in this one?4 -
So, is there something called Chicken Snack Wrap in other McDonalds ?
It has chicken, bacon, and lettuce in tortilla.
Just got curious cuz thats the only thing i eat in McDonalds. Lol11 -
Just curious why I see so many devs drooling over Lenovo devices... I personally think they are some of the worst designed hardware around but seems like I'm in the miniscule minority here...7
-
In a helper for a testing environment there was a flag called CheckLayoutConf. The documentation stated: if set checks if the layout configuration is valid and fixes it. I was curious about the validation and fixing mechanisms, so I looked into the code. But if the flag is set, then the layout configuration is just deleted, so in the next start of the program a new default layout configuration is created. Nice "validation" and "fixing" you for there, I thought to myself.
-
Borrowed 2 books from my school library. The passionate programmer caught my interest. And I grabbed the rootkits one just because I have little idea what a rootkit is so I was curious2
-
Just curious.
1. How you hosting at deep web?
2. Can your websites become listed in deep web? Why?
I just curious12 -
Morning guys. How are your desks? Do you use normal desk or maybe standing one? Do you keep your desk clean or maybe it's more like a mess? Haha!
If someone is curious about my hardware on the photo:
- Dell XPS 15 9550
- Marshall Mode Headphones
- 16gb pendrive that's in business card format but just the important part of it as you can see
Post your desks!
Greetings from my coding buddy cactus 🌵12 -
What are your guys thoughts on Stackoverflow? I feel like no matter what I say on there, whether it be a question, comment, answer, it’s never good enough for someone. Everyone there just seems so rude for no reason. Do you guys have the same experiences? Just curious if it’s only me or it is like this for everyone.14
-
Kinda curious as to why some people rave over vim?
Just tried it and instantly I prefer to use nano as a CLI editor, am I missing something or is it literally just a super subjective thing?14 -
#just a thought
The child that is the most curious will grow up to be most boring person.
Why?
Since most other children of his age would be doing random and a lot of things without questioning , he would be struck in his simple world of 'why this happens' , therby limiting him to one but deep knowledge of a field.
And even if not , being curious leads to answers of little mysteries ignored by ususal ppl. Therefore, this boy with lots of knowledge will be "boring, coz he always have some right things to say".
Thus a child can either don't care and do whatever his authority wants from him without questioning, and grow into a likeable, social adult, or be curious , learn in deep and grow out to be a specially awkward person7 -
What's the longest you've ever been stuck trying to fix a bug or figure out how to build something? Just curious before I bash my head into my keyboard.7
-
Every developer I know from work and uni uses either Linux or Mac for development (most of them are web devs), never seen anyone using Windows for development purposes :/
How, what and why do you develop on Windows? Not bashing, just curious14 -
Anyone think a podcast with no specific topic hosted by programmer that are all experienced in different areas (EG. Game developer, front end developer etc) that just talk about random shit?
Just curious because I love the Triforce podcast and considering that is supposed to be a gaming podcast hosted by fairly different people.
Btw this is just a hypothetical, don't think I'd be able to pull it off!1 -
Curious what you guys think about the creator of Node.js saying that he does not think Node is the best tool for servers and that Go is a much better option.
For me at least, I think it is great that people like him become aware of the shortcommings of the technology they devised, but wonder if it is such a good move to say such things (even tho apparently he is not the head of the Node.js project anymore)
I have always been fascinated by Node and the whole JS ecosystem. I think it did wonders for JS developers and it pushed the whole JS experience to a whole new level, but I am also aware of the shortcommings of it just as I am of the other environments that I use.
So, what do you guys think about his statements? Would you consider investing time in Go as a Node developer? Do you think that it will be possible to do a switch or would you rather stay in and advance the state ot Node development?2 -
What's everyone's opinion on mono?
Just curious because you don't really see any released appliys taking advantage of it, almost all are just .NET...6 -
Yes this is kind of a rant and will probably open a can of worms (Although I would hope people are civil with this)
Why the hell is the gaming community so volatile when it comes to discussing someone personal gaming platform whether it be a gaming PC, Xbox, play station or switch, I myself own a gaming pc yet I will choose to play a game on my xbox one any day of the week, I use my pc for mainly media consumption when programming and just generally for internet use.
Just curious if there are any developers on here who share my view that a platform is just a platform?5 -
Just curious where are you devs from.
Is there any devs on here from NZ besides me and some friends.59 -
!rant
Guys, Im curious, what you would say about situation if you are in need of some quite simple tool and you write it but becouse you need it today, not tommorow, you just dont give a heck about all the fancy stuff and (lets say for php) you start to write all in 2-3 files like you was back beginner?
Or you just nope out of situation?
Do you refactor that when you bored just becouse this cant be on my disk, noone can see this abomination?
Or you delete after usage (only to relaize 5 minutes latter you need it back :P )
Im curious your opinion.
PS.
nope, if you came to bitch about any of opinions even opinion "well, i wouldnt give a fuck and just not do it", go away and get lost.

Why did sonatype just break my maven deploy plugin?? Well finally I was able/forced to migrate to the sonatype deploy plugin.
Finally fully automated CIdeployment to maven central yey.
For the curious, I‘m taking about my hobby (soon to be startup) project https://spot-next.io
Get version 1.011-BETA while it‘s still hot 😆
It‘s An open source SAP hybris alternative on speed 😜😅
Help wanted btw 😅
And excuse the still not complete docs, my two kids + job keep me busy way too much -
I don't want to start any wars in the comments, but what do you devs prefer: iOS or Android?
I'm not saying one is better. I'm just genuinely curious what other devs use. I prefer to use Android because I can do more with my phone.
I'm actually curious what most of you use, so feel free to tag other ranters you know in the comments. I've already commented the few I could come up with off the top of my head.15 -
I’m curious what works for you? Lyrics or instrumental music while you’re working? I find myself preferring instrumental music while I’m thinking about a problem. The music can be technical and busy or super chill, but lyrics always distract me.
Of course, If I’m just half focused and grinding out mock responders for my unit tests then lyrics are fine.11 -
Ok guys just curious what time do you usually sleep and wake up? I usually sleep around 11pm or 12am and wake up 5:30am. I need to fix this5
-
Bash on Windows is incoming soon! As a dual boot win10/Ubuntu user I am pretty psyched. Curious as to what you all think, and opinions from insider program participants.
I just hope it isn't half-assed.4 -
What’s your opinions on AWS, Azure, and whatever googles version is called. I’m curious and I’m asking because I don’t really know a lot of details. I just know they host stuff and make some stuff easier.26
-
//not an actual rant
Just curious how many non software students/employers/people code while it is not their main profession5 -
I am really curious... who of you actually uses snapchat and why?
In my opinion it's one of the most useless apps out there and one of the best concepts to share all your private information with other people and of course the developers.
Also I'd like to believe that rather intelligent people don't use it or if they use it then just for the sake of not being excluded. Since this is a community of programmers I'd like to hear your opinions.7 -
Do you guys listen to lo-fi when programming? I love it. If you don't what do you listen to? (I'm just curious)16
-
What coffee do you like, ranters? Or maybe you prefer tea? 🤔
Share the photos/names of your fav. drink, that you love drinking, I'm just curious.
Just drank nice ice cappuccino bought a while ago in Kaufland. Nice, but hot coffee seems better to me.23 -
I‘m curious what you guys think about puzzle games with timers.
I personally hate it to be pressured by the timer. And I hate it when the puzzle resets and I need to start from scratch because I ran out of time.
I prefer to take my time and think about the next move rather than rapid fire my moves by intuition and hoping to get lucky.
Yet so many puzzle games have timers. Is this just lazy design? Do you like timers? What do you think about this?12 -
anyone here has experience coding high before? can you even focus. 😂 Just really curious, please share.10

Isn't it curious that most development libraries, frameworks, widgets in an ecosystem see a decrease in popularity when they reach a "no longer under active development"/ maintenance stage (especially exacerbated in the front-end)?
As if we just can't settle on a convention. As if, even for limited-scope solutions, a final stage can never be reached, there must be perpetual growth. As if we must constantly trade a solution for a shinier one, that just might provide us with 2% profit based on a doubtful forecast... or not. Sounds a lot like the investment capitalism that resulted in the 2008 subprime crisis. Not sure what to make of this thought but
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU -
If you received an offer for a new job and asked your current boss for a raise to match the new offer, would you tell him/her the real amount or would you inflate it by ~5-10% (or any other arbitrary amount)?
Would that be considered negotiating in bad faith?
I'm not in this position right now (unfortunately), I'm just genuinely curious about what you all would do in this situation.10 -
Hey curious... what motivates everyone to code?
I've actually finished a few apps to get rid of some pain points at work...
and cuz i wanted to do some real coding...
https://github.com/allanx2000/...
https://github.com/allanx2000/...
Actually this may be the first time I've actually written any personal code this year...
So I guess for me I just have to be pissed off enough to actually bother trying to fix something.9 -
Finally got SwiftUIRant into TestFlight:
https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
This first version supports rant feed, notifications, ++/—, and commenting, essentially.
Posting rants and uploading images will be in the next major version.
I will also add proper notification badges later. For now it’s just text. A star (*) indicates unread notification categories.
I’m curious for your feedback 😄

!ran Why cant companies work with employees over skype and other software instead of everybody having to physically go to a workplace?
Wouldn't it be more convinient to just connect over such softwares, and share code over github and stuff?
Or what is the reason that companies want to have their employees in a building?
No workplace = less money spent?
I'm not in a job yet and have no experience out of highschool working else where.
I'm just curious on what your opinions are.6 -
Anyone heard of brain.fm? I'm just curious if it actually, works, and helps to focus and concentrate. Are 200 bucks really woth it?
Thanks in advance :D2 -
Just curious with you all, what do you like to do besides coding but still count as productive?
Me, I make Music and Designs in my free time, even joined a music group at campus8 -
Just curious what people's opinion is on paying for source code?
Not going to do it but just a random question that popped into mind...8 -
Snapchat?
Is it just me, or, is this a super simple app (that makes millions, aarg)
Do you really need to steal the code?
Is it the scale (number of users) that would potentially make it complicated?
My apps may get thousands of visitors / day, but that's about it... not millions. Php/mysql is just fine for that. So I have no experience with this and I'm curious. Thanks.4 -
For US salaried developers here, a young soon-to-be employed graduate has a question...
When it comes to salaried work, is it just a matter of work "close to 40 hours but really just get your work done" or should I be trying to fill a seat for 8 hours a day even if I don't have anything to work on? And if I'm non-exempt (elligible for overtime over 40hrs), is it reasonable for me to be here 9 hours a day, or should I be capping it off at 8?
I know these are questions for my employer but it's gonna be a bit before I actually start work and I'm curious.9 -
Just curious if anyone actually will open a file in read/write rather than keep the 2 streams seperate?
Just sees so prone to error have it open to read and write...3 -
Where to begin learning about blockchain? (Google searches return way too much information.)
This has been in the back of my head for years now. And with all the attention that crypto currency has been getting lately, reminded me to look into this again.
Note: I don't actually care for cryto currencies, I'm just really curious about blockchain technology.4 -
I've been working on a side project for a while(many months) and I'm at my 3rd refactoring and concluded that the greater service I want to achieve the more complex the project become, nothing exceptional, except I feel like doing the effort of an entire team of software developers.
Someone else has/d such a feeling/experience? If yes, I would like to hear your thoughs/story(just curious ;)
Ps: soon I'll reveal some screenshots here :32 -
Follow up to this:
https://devrant.com/rants/6403741/
So we had today a meeting....
To restart the project, as the current state is garbage.
Turns out the whole team has after two weeks of being left alone with it - kinda like the rant says - zero clue how lucene works, what it does, what its for.
In case anyone of you wonders why some managers are micromanaging biatches, there you have it.
The whole meeting had more "oooh"... "ehm".... "eh"... and other fillwords just to cover the shame of not having any clue at all.
I'm really disappointed that a team of up to 5 people really thought they could pull a stunt of "fake it till you make it". Collectively. Really noone had a real clue.
Now to an interesting discussion: How would you devs reprimand them?
:)
Just curious. Firing is out of option, for several reasons, e.g. law.
Serious answers, I would be really curious. :)
I'm feeling sad for the socks metaphoric in the last rant btw.
Even a cum socket deserves more dignity than them imho.6 -
Question to the Americans here..
Just out of interest.
How many of you know the metric system?
I feel like as a dev you need to know it to communicate with the rest of the world on the same level. But I meet so many Americans that have no clue how metric even works.. (as if it was less logical than imperial 😄)
No offense, just truely curious..10 -
I started working on a multiplatform mobile app for streaming and I already decided to implement it in react native using cause I found already the tools that I needed, I was curious about if I could do the same in flutter without having to write my own custom wrappers for each native app, and I found this question response and I just couldn't stand the comments, how is that someone can proudly say that he doesn't know how something works but he just copy and paste some scripts from the internet?
What kind of programmers are these now days??
BTW #firstPostHere2 -
Just curious on whether or not to open source something or not...
As some would have seen I'm working on a game engine/framework and putting a lot of effort into the development terminal (lumber camp) and had a fair few people show interest in it so thought I might chuck it on GitHub as I go but I don't want to allow for merging until the main component is at version 1 and stable...
Should I release as I go and not do merging or wait till it is at version 1?4 -
Was reading the voice command rant and got curious, what do you guys think about the brain-machine-interface? Will it ever happen?
I would love it but also have some fears. Being able to control devices just by thought would be a huge time saver. But data mining is getting out of hand and that is scaring me. Companies would be able to analyze a lot.
Now they 'just' know what I am buying and which sites I am visiting.
If they know what I am thinking, Amazon would suggest me rubber gloves, body bags and whisky.7 -
For anyone reaching an extreme degree of frustration, what do you guys tend to do to reduce the anger?
What i've just realized works for me is to get a domain related to the cause of my frustration.
I'm really curious if anyone else does something like that.13 -
How many of you guys actually do the eight finger touch typing? Is it common among younger devs? And for those who don't, how fast do you consider yourself while coding (like actual mechanical typing of code)?16
-
Curious to see if anyone else is in this situation: I somehow have become the “infrastructure upgrade guy”. I’m in this constant loop of retrofitting our applications to work with the latest Windows Version or Java Middleware. Or, I’m stuck porting apps from one middleware to another. I guess I got good at this, and now I’m stuck in this constant loop of being the “go to” for all system upgrades/ports, which seem to just be in this endless cycle. It gets me a lot of recognition, but the work is miserable. Anyone else experience something like this, and if so, how did you get out?2
-
I could do with do advice of the nice people of devRant!
I want to develop a mobile app for iOS and Android, however creating native apps is just too much. I've found a solution for cross platform development such as xamarim, cordova, appcelarator.
I'm just curious to what your experiences have been and which would be a good route to go?10 -
Quick Question
Suppose I wanted to apply A.I. or deeplearning to a very simple marketing activity I have in mind...
What's my learning curve looking like? I'm a backend programmer with roughly 3-4 years
experience in laravel/php right now. I've used
almost every inch of that framework.
Just curious. And any path anyone would suggest? thanks3 -
So I was reading a rant by PatrickCurl and he said he lowered his rates to $40/hour. Was just curious how much you guys are getting paid per hour? To me $40 is alot actually but it depends where you live and what are your expertise. Anyways, just for a rough idea, can you guys tell me your $/hour rate, experience and your country maybe..??15
-
Just curious, how do remote workers onboard with their company?
And I guess basically now all offices are closed, what happens after your hired, your first day of work?
At my company to work remotely, you would need a token card and access permissions.1 -
Ok so this has been asked before I guarantee it buuuuuuuut.
I've been meaning to set up a Minecraft server and was curious if any other devRant users would wanting to join in and/or help pay for upkeep?
(Don't need to pay but it would help out if it does get some traction!)
Just comment if you would like to and if I get enough interest I'll look into setting it up :-)4 -
So I just got an insight from my PW session in SQLplus. I finally understood why the fridge did the SQL console under Oracle return the error:
ORA-00911: invalid character
on a line that seemed perfectly correct, but it's as if it spawned you an invalid character, just because.
But in fact, when I enter a character unintentionally like ç, then I remove it, it's as if the text prompt makes it look like it got removed, but there's still the cedilla, or at least its character code roaming around in the line I'm writing, and thus resulting in an error.
I'm not even salty now, that got me curious, and I think it's better like this, even if I'll require a bit of research on that thing later on.4 -
Hey there everyone!,
Not really coding related however i'm curious to know what books are people reading here on DevRant? My current book rotation is:
1) The man who solved the market
2) Mindf*ck (just got this today!)
3) Sapiens
4) Dark pools
Curious to see what others are reading :D related or not related to technology :D or even keen to hear suggestions!
Cheers!14 -
How many of you think, that one of front-end dev responsibility is UI/UX design?
I’m not making any judgements - just curious why and if.19 -
Just curious, anyone here know the tech stack of devRant?
I'd love to see a blog post, (if there isn't one already) on what this app runs on!2 -
Hm, is **website** progressive enhancement still a thing?
Please be welcome into slaughter discussion. I just read some articles today and i'm realy curious what your thoughts are.17 -
Just curious:
What is your typing speed?
What is your keyboard layout? (Qwerty, dvorak, colemak, etc.)
What type of keyboard do you use most often?14 -
So there is a company selling bullshit miraculous devices which they claim can heal everything from foul breath to cancer and autism by light and magnetic pulses. They trick old, naive, gullible, ignorant or simply stupid people into paying big money for their stuff which is always "on sale, just now just for you".
The question is: if they would ask you to build a website for them (which would help their shady business grow) would you refuse their actually pretty generous offer because of moral reasons, or do it like any other job?
(I know my answer, I'm just curious about others' opinions.)7 -
So this is just something I'm curious of, but when following guides/tutorials how do you challenge the information you're learning? like how do you retain the information.
I typically take notes and make something different with the information but Ive just always wondered how others go about it.15 -
What is your preffered way of branching and potential integration of issue tracking?
Just curious to see as this topic causes a lot of discussions in office the last days.5 -
I was just curious but don't need it, the domain would be great for a personal blog/portfolio. First come first serve.
Your welcome. -
Serious question, why do people prefer vim or emacs? I understand that they have alot of shortcuts and what not but so do other editor. Just curious. Don't kill me9
-
I love devRant, show new prespective and many related story around me and my job.
For me devRant is like medicine, help me smile and make my good mood sometime.
But, also like medicine I only open the app on spare time or when I need it.
I just curious why so many people so addicted to this, also I see some user maybe like 90% exist and continously comment on every rant that I open.
Maybe our reference/priority is different, I prefer playing game mostly.
Well that what I think, just random spawning before go to sleep mode.13 -
Have you ever felt like you're too committed to your job, even though you'd be doing basically anything else? Yeah, me neither. That's why I spend the last two days and nights on writing a suite of smoke tests for our system.
Here's basically all the work hours I wrote down, during which the majority of the time I was writing the test suite. If anybody's curious about Wednesday, let's just say that decisions were made, and baggies were emptied.6 -
How many other c#/monogame developers are on here and looking for people to collab with? Just curious
-
Just curious, how many users does devrant have?
How many active commentors/posters?
What about posts or comments per month?7 -
I'm about to ask a really, lets just say challenging, question.
I'm well aware that PHP is server side and JS is client side. Don't worry, i'm not as dumb as I look, but I've taken interest in the formerly known as phpjs.org project now known as Locutus. (Love their name and idea.)
My question is whether anyone has used any little bit of that project, and if so, can you use it for something like Wordpress or Joomla to have a purely serverless and dynamic website? I know. I know. Dumb. I'm just curious because the idea intrigues me more than anything to have something like that.4 -
Question for iOS users (not that I'm looking into an iPhone, just curious)
What is the general state on app notifications? Because I've just about had it with the absolute fucking torrent of notifications whenever you install some random app on Android.
You install some random exercise app and the next day it will say "so did you get your exercise you lazy fucker?".
You install some random food recipe app and it immediately tells you to get your luncheon going with over a billion recipes (and probably all bad)7 -
Team building exercises... Curious to hear your opinions....
They annoy the hell out of me personally and I can't see the value in them...
Have bonded way more with previous teams by simply working on a project together. No BS exercises, or even scrum for that matter, we just respected each other and that seemed to effortlessly let us make each other better at our work.1 -
post != rant #sorry
Just curious. How would one go about programming something like this? Do you guys think this machine just displays a fullscreen web app made in html/css or is there another approach with an actual programming language, not markup language that one can take? I heard it uses RFID technology to show cartridge levels, and records the time dispensed, alerts store owner when low, and brand dispensed alongside just dispensing drinks.16 -

i wonder what would be the circumstances which lead to evolution of the most meek , fruit eating creatures (monkey) into the smartest, flesh eating carnivore (humans).
Did they just felt comfortable walking on 2 feet instead of 4?was this just an idea of some curious group of monkeys?
Imagine if in a parallel universe, their are lions who came up with this idea...and
Behold, in a parallel universe instead of us ,big vegan monster lion-humans are reading this post.(Vegan because why not?Its evolution)8 -
How do y'all read programming books? Do you try to memorize them, redo all the examples on your machine or read them quickly just to pick up the most important points and to remember where to look if additional informations are needed in future?
Nowadays I always use the last strategy otherwise reading a single book would take me a year but I'm curious to know if I'm the only one.8 -
Hey devRant team, I saw the new designs and they are awesome. Actually I just started learning Android App Development and I was curious what stack do you guys use for devRant Android App. And while we are on this can you guys share the stack you use for IOS app and Web app. Thank you and by the way you've done a really good job with android app.6

Ok so I'm about to start working on an OS but I am going to run through a few tutorials to get the base systems down then I'll incorporate a interpreter for BASIC and my custom scripting language.
Just curious if anyone can point me in the direction of a few well written tutorials that will explain the systems being used. (I want to use Assembly and C only btw, but am open to others)
I only have 1 decent tutorial but it's older and complete (https://github.com/cfenollosa/...)3 -
How do you deal with bad managers?
I'll give you an example. One of my managers requests a feature and then a week later claims it isn't working correctly, and asks me to change it again.
Another example, we were in a meeting and she requests a feature, then 5 seconds later requests something entirely different. It's like she didn't even remember what she requested 5 seconds ago. Everyone in the meeting saw it, but nobody said anything about it.
I'm on my way out of this company, but I'm just curious how other coders deal with it. I've watched this woman completely destroy 2 systems I've coded now.4 -
Im curious guys, what's everyone main core OS/Distro at the moment and why?
For me it's chrome OS, taken a little hiatus from programming as it's been dragging my mental state down a bit so I've been focusing on writing my book and what programming I am doing is just me learning ground up java script development. So all I really need are my google docs services and a good code editor.5 -
Trying to add money to a prepaid SIM card today. Their website is a mess. Plus and minus buttons were not functioning, so my only option was to add 15 euro. Checked the console, no errors. Tried triggering the buttons jQuery, no luck. Found a data value attached to the submit button set to 15. Changed to 10, clicked submit, and BOOM, it worked! You just got engineered!
After I paid, I was curious, went back and set it to -15, and tried it again. Unfortunately, they know about backend validation. -
Recruiters often tell you to use numbers to highlight your successes. For example, "I did Programming Task ABC and increased sales of widgets by 1,000%". I'm curious how many of us actually have had access to and/or kept track of those kinds of success metrics in our prior jobs. I find myself guessing and even just making up numbers that nobody's going to have even the slightest possibility of verifying.6

I'm Angularjs and .NET developer. I'm planning to learn addition skill / tool.
Options are:
1) MEAN Stack
2) React (and related)
3) ML / Data Science
4) Django
Why Mean?
Because it'd easy for me to grasp and I can easily get projects for it.
Why React?
Always curious about React, because of the hype maybe. But really wanna learn. And some gap for React developers.
Why ML/DS?
Tbh, I suck at Mathematics and Statistics. Why ML / DS just because it sound fascinating.
Why Django?
Enough with JS JS JS, what else?
Please give your suggestions :)6 -
When a client’s website is about how he’s an expert at fixing his customers’ psychological problems, and he’s got those same problems and isn’t managing them well at all himself, you just
1. Build site.
2. Get check.
3. Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to even if you really are curious.1 -
Me : sending screenshots of login screen, API design ,etc. to the client
Client : ohhh that's nice to see..Being a business analyst, I'm just curious on one thing here, does our app work without internet.
Me : Wrong decision on the first place that I chose you to be my client. Fuck you !!! I need to talk to the company that hired you as a business analyst first !!! *Hangs the call* *Facepalm*6 -
I have mixed feelings about Elon’s Neuralink. Just read a bit of the abstract.
“Neuralink’s first steps toward a scalable high-bandwidth BMI system. We have built arrays of small and flexible electrode “threads”, with as many as 3,072 electrodes per array distributed across 96 threads.”
I’m curious, will this be this be the next “form of cognition”?6 -
Either I am too sensitive with my name or I just can't stop laughing when someone keep misspelled my English name, "Michael" into "Micheal".
I know it doesn't sound like a big deal but... *eye-roll*
Anyway, I am still wondering that what wording or how does it take for them to accidentally typed from 'ae' into 'ea'..?
Super curious here.3 -

PHP guys, your equivalent to the dot operator looks weird to me with no whitespace, anybody else spaces out their arrows like this?13 -
How much time at work do you usually spend purely coding? How often/quick do you get bored/tired? I’m just curious what fellow developers feel like.9
-
I have a colleague and I don’t know if they’re male or female. Not that it’s relevant, I’m just curious.
Note, I have only seen them in Zoom meetings. Never met them IRL.27 -
I was just wondering a little about my shitty life and I got curious: How many hours a day do you stare at screens?
I am not gonna give you my answer just yet, because I am ashamed of myself.14 -
So the avatars of people never load in my devRant app. Except for the user profile screen. Post and comment screens just show Colors circlez. I’m curious. (Yeah my app is updated to latest version)5

Just bumped into this service called hCaptcha which looks very similar to Google's reCaptcha.
Anybody used it before? what's the difference in terms of benefits?
if it is not a google service, then where does it fetches its captcha images from?
I'm just a bit curious.4 -
How many of you play music?
If you do, what instrument do you play, and does it help you clear your mind/calm down from programming stress?
Just curious.12 -
This... I always swore that this would be a sign of the apocalypse. Mainly, I'm just curious how the other half lives.4

What kind of apartment could a typical programmer afford in New York?

Just curious what done dev's would prefer screen wise for smart devices like watches and the like...
The long battery life of a colour e-ink display but have the muted colours.
Or an OLED screen with the high contrast and vibrancy, but with much lower battery?4 -
Just curious, how many total daily users does devRant have, and what is the peak user number in any given day?4
-
What the best git client?
For mac I use git Tower which is just amazing but I'm curious as to what other people think.13 -
Alright, part 2/4 of my new project is done!
For those who are curious what this project is, I'll be posting some more info later this week! I just want to finish the v0.1 initial alpha/MVP and then I'll be revealing all the details.9 -
Satisfying my own curiosity #3:
Who here dabbles in electronics?
As professional or amateur/hobbyist, doesn't matter.
I'd appreciate straining from discussions, ideally 1 comment per person starting with "I do" or "I don't" (it'd make counting easier).9 -
Currently in Milano. Do we have anyone from Italy here on DevRant? How's dev's life here? How're working hours? Employers? Overall experience? Just curious. :)

So I know it's possible to run a lot of things from the terminal. Does anyone run their daily driver exclusively on a terminal? Just curious.3

How do you deal with your juniors when they do any mistakes? Do you praise them when they overcome any challenges they were facing? Do you blame them rather correcting them? Do you balance both praise and blame to them? Just curious. 😅5

Just curious, but how long do you guys spend programming a day. This isn't counting working time although you can include working time just declare it first!7

So I just came across this and its really cool. I dropping the link for anyone curious, but its basically a digital FREE "magazine" that revolves around (and I'll quote from the site) "programming (especially programming tricks!), hacking, security hacking, retro computers, modern computers, electronics, demoscene, and other similar topics." the issues come out in PDF's and its really fucking awesome. Is monthly salary of USD 4,500 a below average or average salary in your country?

In my country (Malaysia) it is consider above average.8 -
Okay so this has been bugging me. I know object oriented is important and helpful and good over all, but how much do people in the field with jobs use it. And this applies to any language I'm just curious.7
-
Objective-C syntax is more readable than Swift.
The verbose naming conversations feel natural in Objective-C, but in Swift they look rather nasty to me.
Also Swift syntax feels inconsistent in many parts of the language, which forces you to memorize when you can and when you can't use a certain feature (i.e where, case).
Am I the only one that thinks Objective-C looks a lot cleaner than Swift code?
Note: This is an opinion, not trying to start a war. Just curious if I'm alone on this.9 -

random question.
Let's say you are making solo project. What is your approach?
Maybe you start writing some classes or generally some code, independantly, than plug things together
Or maybe you write recursively, so like "okay, im writing this method, and now I need other method to complete this one, so I write the other one"
Or maybe you try to make frontend first and do many atomic things, one by one "filling out" frontend? Or maybe frontend is last thing you do?
Just curious, probably as many devs, that many approaches, but Im just curious what kind of creative anwsers will pop out here ;)8 -
I’m just curious, how relevant is slack in the workplace? And is it enjoyable to use or awful like Skype9
-
What's everyone second source of income?
Curious on how you started and money per month of average for it. Feel I should start working towards it in case of layoffs or just need of extra money.
Is freelancing on upwork worth it?13 -
Just throwing it out there but curious how many of us Aussie Devs are around the Melbourne area?
Would love to meet each other for a piss up... I mean meetup for a few lemonades and quiet games of pool :-3 -
Do you type faster and more efficient when the boss is standing behind you or slow down and stop eventually?5

Hey DevRant fam!,
I hope everyone is well as always! I was just curious... Very recently i bumped into a website called 'LeetCode' and was curious about trying to solve some problems for fun. However to me it seems that i get stuck on the wording or it just gets confusing,. I personally always enjoyed building things but wasn't really a fan of doing the actual coding problems from websites like this not sure if that is a terrible thing?, was wondering has anyone else been in this position? Maybe i'm lacking something? :-)
Would love to hear anyone's input! thank you for taking the time to read through my post as always!
Cheers!.2 -
The wait never ended..
I don't know but for some reason I haven't still received my stickers. Just curious.5 -
Does anyone here have experience with LINQ? I was hoping that anyone with some experience with it might be willing to share some opinions or insights about it. Like:
- Do you like LINQ?
- Does LINQ have shortcomings or easy pits to fall into when using it? (especially as a beginner)
- Do you use something besides LINQ? If so, why?
Sorry for bothering anyone on here with this, I'm just curious about the tech as I'm trying to learn C# and I'm not sure S.O. would appreciate opinion based questions.3 -
Satisfying my own curiosity #2:
Who here works in the video games industry?
As anyone, including visual, audio and mocap artists, etc.
I'd appreciate straining from discussions, ideally 1 comment per person starting with "I do" or "I don't" (it'd make counting easier).9 -
Questions to other freelances out there.
I suppose it's a common occurrence to be involved in some project, asked to add some feature or modify something, and then looking at the source and find an unmanageable burning mess.
If upon such a discovery you decide you're not taking the job - for example, given the situation you need to charge quite a lot more and the customer cannot pay the appropriate amount - how do you go on explaining your reasons?
You just go out directly telling them about the dire situation of their codebase? Try to find a nice way of telling the truth? Make some excuse (cannot because personal reasons)?
Just curious2 -
Has anyone had any experience with Dart and Flutter?
Just did a little research and I'm curious, just want to know if it might be worth looking at?4 -
I'm considering applying for a job i know for a fact I can't get but I'm gonna try requesting to be an unpaid intern rather than try and get the actual position. That way I can learn from people above me in ability and still participate in building a program I actually use myself (the shockbyte hosting site for those curious https://shockbyte.com/jobs )
Of course I'd still keep my current paid job too. This would just be a learning endeavor for me
But what does devRant think of my plan2 -

Why doesn't anyone use their real name in here (or in any other social like dev community)?. Just curious about it.27 -

Let's say that you have (or had) a colleague that you utterly despise for whatever reason. Have you ever wrote convoluted or straight up spaghetti code on purpose just to make his/her life harder?
(I am aware that authoring bad code can bite you in the ass down the line, just curious to see if anyone ever went that far) -
Not a rant but just curious to see what mobile OS do all you devs on devRant use?
I recently moved from Android to iOS. Doing so has made me realise how much I loved using Android but due to its inherent stuttery lag, inferior standby time and memory management, I will be staying with iOS for now.
What are your reasons on using the mobile OS that you are using now?7 -
Why are there so many get bitcoin quick scemes out there. Are these things even legit? Because im starting to wonder, just curious now (thinking)1
-
Just curious, but do a lot of people here actually search content using tags. I made a post on CSS around 2 weeks back and it still gets upvotes pretty regularly.4
-
Just starting to learn front-end js frameworks ( vue ), and I'm curious. What are the advantages or disadvantages of routing in an SPA vs traditionally redirecting the user? Besides the fact that you don't have to create routes in the backend.
Are there any effects on SEO?
Are there any substantial performance differences?10 -
Do you 'draft' your code?
I'm just really curious, as I'm not a developer; but I've been doing dev work for the last 8 months...
I just realised today, that 'drafting' my code on paper makes my workflow 10^10 times better and intuitive.
Like, just writing a rough code block with what function I'm going to use and how I'm going to form an equation, etc...
Or do you guys just jump straight ahead and start pushing out code?2 -
Hmm am learning mean stack.. so far it is good... But can anyone help me in reviewing my code. Like am doing self learning but I guess my code can be improved with better standards or approaches.. Just curious if can found any help here :)8
-
I'm curious how many of you r dating a dev and does it make a difference, like do you fight over used stack/framework, who will use the powerful pc, bigger screen ( what have you ) or just the regular normal mini fights in a relationship?5
-
So I decided to take a look at the list of directx 2-7 games on the pcgaming wiki, and noticed the a lot of these Unity games appeantly support directx 7. I'm a little curious why someone would want to do this why not just support directx 9 instead?2

now i know this is devrant and not su-rant or sysadminrant or anything alike,
but it cringes me everytime i see rants like "linux this" or "linux that".
now those who does it, do understand that the term "linux" refer to the kernel and not the os in it's entirety, right?6 -
I moved to a foreign country, is it practical to try to freelance remotely when I've acquired the skills to build websites? I don't think I'd be ready soon, but I'm just curious of others opinions. (I've got a pretty good grasp at HTML, CSS, jQuery, and JavaScript.)
-
So this is going to sound perverted or just weird for some of you, but I’m honestly just curious (whole sentence sounds comical). Making a porn site is not that difficult, but how the hell do people get traffic? Seriously, the amount of money one could make is ridiculous.4
-
Should I just be a silly stupid evil selfish reckless bastard who is engages in wholesale rapine and doesn’t care about anything or make any rational or reasonable commentary on our system or any intelligent reasoning ?
Just remain curious
Seems to work for the garbage who should be getting punished and do everything to encourage their own punishment
Just saying
And wtf is that about ?
How can people who deserve it profit by this ?
Assholes4 -
Does anybody here developing Opencart module using Git, I am just curious how the workflow looks like
Note: I know, Opencart is not really a good choice1 -
I was just curious about this: how many of you guys uses emacs/vim? Is it your main editor or just for quick editing? Any specific reason besides familiarity?
I ask this because I'm a late adopter of emacs. It is my quick editor (I use jetbrains IDEs). Fell in love with mu4e and twitter-mode, but org-mode was the deal breaker.3 -
Is the devRant Swag Store website made from scratch or is it a Shopify template? Just curious because I love the layout and how clean it is.4

Code doesn't lie, but sometimes you really feel like it is. Just curious, is there anyone here that has ever actually found a bug with a platform?2
-
Hi Devrant, my little brother showed me this site (https://commits.facepunch.com/) which is the commits page for a game he plays.
Some users comment block element characters like █▅▌▊▋ ▉▇█▅▍_▍▄▉▆ he asked if i knew if that meant anything and I don't, but now i'm curious myself.
can anyone recognize the block characters and/or understand if they actually mean anything, as far as a I know they're just block elements people use to mess with others, but like a lot of people are posting them
anyone has an idea of a potential path i'd appreciate it, i'm really curious about whether this means anything or is just a troll
thank you for your time2 -
Web developers I'm doing a quick poll for a story in writing and I'm curious what development platforms do you use and why do you use it? This can be a CMS platform like WordPress or rails for a web application or even weebly for a WYSIWYG. just curious how you all think and why. Thanks in advance!7

Satisfying my own curiosity #4:
Who here has a weird hobby unrelated to coding?
I'd appreciate straining from discussions, ideally 1 comment per person starting with the name of the hobby or short description (it'd make counting easier).16 -
Do we still need virtualenv when we have containers? Cuz one of my friends thinks it’s a good idea to use virtualenv everywhere, even in production, even in an LXC?
Is it being paranoid or really a solution to some problem that would otherwise rise? I’m just curious.1 -
If you all weren't pretending to still be here which I wonder if you all are, what would you all do if I suddenly didn't care about anything at all ? Kind of curious because it is hard.
Since you know there are people even breeding small children to slake the lusts of garbage motherfuckers who have STDs ruining one generation after another and that's just another nail on my cross holding me up while your fake asses pretend to give a damn about the patriarchy and preferred pronouns and all that other bullshit
Or continue this COVID 19 masquerade
Wtf ?
Do you not all feel even a little stupid yet ? Even just a little like monsters ? Even just a little bit ashamed ? Or when you're being beaten to death in your dotages by teenagers for being pedophiles in wheelchairs is what it will take ?10 -
Not a rant, but just curious, comment which you like more, Java, or C++. (And your favorite editor/IDE for the hell of it)7
-
Just curious, if you company had 3 system outages due to architecture with over 5 days of intermittence + a bunch of smaller downtimes ONLY in 2021 would they promote the guy in charge?
Because maybe I’m the weird one and not the company itself.3 -
Satisfying my own curiosity #1:
Who here uses Vim/Neovim, and who doesn't?
I'd appreciate straining from discussions, ideally 1 comment per person starting with the name of your IDE (it'd make counting easier).13 -
I've just discovered Jade and Stylus, making webpages for my projects might actually be awesome again!
I'm curious what other people's experiences have been with these two technologies?1 -
Do you guys know how to get add-ons for emacs? And where to find a CLEAR tutorial about vim (I'm just curious about how powerful it can be) please?

Hey everyone - Hope all is well :-), just curious I've been using Ubuntu 18.04 on my Virtual Box and i must say i'm really enjoying using Ubuntu - however at times it can get really laggy and its annoying :-( , was wondering does the lag have something to do with Virtual Box? if so what other Virtual Machine would you recommend :-)
Cheers :-)12 -
Is it a problem if you’re a “full stack” developer but the company you work for has your title as “data analyst”? Meaning your teams builds and maintains every aspect of a website that the company employees use in their daily jobs and all that...
I’m just curious how that affects pay, your resume, etc. New to all things tech related so please excuse my ignorance. I just haven’t seen that before.7 -

Just curious, who here plays escapist and wishes it were multiplayer? Or dont starve (well that's multiplayer).1 -
I am looking for an alternative to Heroku where I can push and test my research and referencing application. I have been using Heroku for developing and testing my applications but I am wondering if there are other similar platforms with more streamlined and advanced features and functions. I am not saying that Heroku is bad. On the contrary, I believe that they are doing a great job. I am just curious if there are other better platforms that could make my work easier and enjoyable.3

When there are multiple third party services getting used in your spring boot application. How do you manage their API creds.
Like I use Aws Secret Manager for the keys and different account level info. But after fetching in the application in runtime should we create classes to hold such info or just class variables are enough?
I'm more curious about the coding standard practices of different developers in the globe.10 -
Any devs here speak swedish? I've been learning it for awhile on my own (I'm American), but just curious!9
-
Just curious as to what security measures/programming languages the IRS uses on their website on form submissions and stuff.
-
I was in an interview and all they really could tell me was the projects 'on the shelf' how they were understaffed, and new opportunities due to covid, that were coming onto the current development pipeline.
How would you guys react to a headhunted talk at a company structured like that? Just curious, it spooked me a bit at first.2 -
Okay recently I've seen more and more hate towards Apple.
So this got me curious why is Apple so bad according you guy?
I mean they are just sticking at their founding rules and kept it ever since.5 -
!dev Now ladies if you please excuse my lang for a moment, I'm just curious to know if some 1 knows.
So I was thinking about the word 'relax', could it be that it derives from re-wax or I just imagined the obvious connection between them?5 -
When you are attempting to learn a new framework what is the learning process like? Do you watch youtube tutorials for 5 hours straight or do you go straight to the documentation. Just curious3
-
what are qualities / characteristics that make a person worthy in your eyes?
could be for anything (friendship, spouse, co-worker, boss, family member), just generally curious6 -
So, I feel wayyy behind the tech curve right now.
The SSD implementations you see online, they're still just a bunch of seperate sort of chaos machines that contain the standard perceptron-like model of a weight, cost, and bias right ? They just kind of inferred their values by training like any other neural network, in its sep-erate parts and just fed pieces of output data generated by other parts of the neural network to it right ?
I mean it implements with pytorch so its basically a really big array of tuples in a sense that are maniupulated in a specific way.
and then CNN's just feed data back into another trained piece of the model right ?
I'm curious because object classification is about the ONLY thing I've seen work even close to properly lol
there is just so much fraud these days. sigh.
and so many lamentable tech choices and attempts... like node lol -
Who here uses emacs and what's your favorite part about it?
I started using it and picking it up gradually from a more GUI IDE and it seems pretty cool from what I've seen of it. Just curious to see who's found use of it and what tricks you guys know.1 -
Hey so this isn't a rant, but just a question.
What books, tutorials, anything do you recommend for getting into AI? I'm going into my third year as a CS major and I'm just really curious.
Either self learning AI (maybe called machine learning) or game AI preferred
Thank you :) -
So how many generations of the same people are you raising simultaneously or are you people killing them in between passing all of us off as younger than we are ? Just curious
Wonder just how much of a group of monsters you all are since I’ve seen counting on 5 duplicates this far with periods of amnesia in between24 -
I'm gonna need a laptop, and the one I have is too large for my liking. I am just curious as to whether or not I should get a windows laptop and install Ubuntu, or take the extra time to find one with Ubuntu already? Do you guys have any suggestions for laptops around $500?3

What creates these files and folders?
Cache, GPUCache, Local Storage, Cookies, etc...
I see that many different programs have a folder in my appdata with these exact files/file structures in it. Is there some sort of framework that creates these? I'm just curious.4 -
Hi everyone, good to be back (my phone died, backup one wasn't able to run devRant). I wonder what I missed. Probably a lot considering how many amazing stories and discussions appear here daily.
But I digress. So I wanted to ask if anyone is planning on going to HackYeah hackathon in Krakow, Poland? Just curious if I should look out for any familiar orange stickers. -
Just curious. What do you guys think about the pixel from Google? I have one since the release and I'm very pleased by this phone!

Hey testing geeks, I just come up with "FinTech product" when I was on the train. I am just curious about what's the trendy technology for FinTech product in banks. So what would be the best automation testing scenarios to be used to test FinTech product? Time to open your bain.
