Java devs: grab a drink! You'll need it after seeing this.
The "Shit students do, even after almost a year of Java lectures" saga continues...46 -
Started being a Teaching Assistant for Intro to Programming at the uni I study at a while ago and, although it's not entirely my piece of cake, here are some "highlights":
* students were asked to use functions, so someone was ingenious (laughed my ass off for this one):
def all_lines(input):
all_lines =input
return all_lines
* "you need to use functions" part 2
*moves the whole code from main to a function*
* for Math-related coding assignments, someone was always reading the input as a string and parsing it, instead of reading it as numbers, and was incredibly surprised that he can do the latter "I always thought you can't read numbers! Technology has gone so far!"
* for an assignment requiring a class with 3 private variables, someone actually declared each variable needed as a vector and was handling all these 3 vectors as 3D matrices
* because the lecturer specified that the length of the program does not matter, as long as it does its job and is well-written, someone wrote a 100-lines program on one single line
* someone was spamming me with emails to tell me that the grade I gave them was unfair (on the reason that it was directly crashing when run), because it was running on their machine (they included pictures), but was not running on mine, because "my Python version was expired". They sent at least 20 emails in less than 2h
* "But if it works, why do I still have to make it look better and more understandable?"
* "can't we assume the input is always going to be correct? Who'd want to type in garbage?"
* *writes 10 if-statements that could be basically replaced by one for-loop*
"okay, here, you can use a for-loop"
*writes the for loop, includes all the if-statements from before, one for each of the 10 values the for-loop variable gets*
* this picture
N.B.: depending on how many others I remember, I may include them in the comments afterwards19 -

My Java teacher asked me to build the java projects that are in syllabus and then explain them to the other students...

Got a graphing calculator in high school for math class. Needed to memorize a bunch of formulas, saw you could program them in the calculator with BASIC. Sold the program to other students, profit.6

Dear Prof,
One does not simply encrypt the exam tips and give it to the students in a computer security introductory module.
Sincerely,

teacher (me): for the next session, we will need vagrant, please use the command 'vagrant box add…' before coming to class.
student, one week later: I tried your command, but an error came 'vagrant command not found'
me: did you install vagrant?
student: no... why?
*sigh*5 -
The reason half of Games Development students drop out is because they think "me like play game, me make game"
Instead of actually being interested in the development.23 -
Created a Python Course chatbot over at LINE Messenger. At first I thought it wouldn’t even helped anyone learn programming but now I got over 230 active students learning each day. This is great!21

My fellow students as high school freshmen: You can code right?
Me: Yup
Them: So can you like hack the school and better my grades(they are all honor students btw)
Me: *Sure, want me to hack paypal and get you some cash too?*
Them: Jeez just asked for a tiny favor.10 -
This is my colleges server room, it was built by students, for the students. I have attended this college for two years. Every day we here it whirring away. Not one day have I seen one student actually use it.15

Paranoid Developers - It's a long one
Backstory: I was a freelance web developer when I managed to land a place on a cyber security program with who I consider to be the world leaders in the field (details deliberately withheld; who's paranoid now?). Other than the basic security practices of web dev, my experience with Cyber was limited to the OU introduction course, so I was wholly unprepared for the level of, occasionally hysterical, paranoia that my fellow cohort seemed to perpetually live in. The following is a collection of stories from several of these people, because if I only wrote about one they would accuse me of providing too much data allowing an attacker to aggregate and steal their identity. They do use devrant so if you're reading this, know that I love you and that something is wrong with you.
That time when...
He wrote a social media network with end-to-end encryption before it was cool.
He wrote custom 64kb encryption for his academic HDD.
He removed the 3 HDD from his desktop and stored them in a safe, whenever he left the house.
He set up a pfsense virtualbox with a firewall policy to block the port the student monitoring software used (effectively rendering it useless and definitely in breach of the IT policy).
He used only hashes of passwords as passwords (which isn't actually good).
He kept a drill on the desk ready to destroy his HDD at a moments notice.
He started developing a device to drill through his HDD when he pushed a button. May or may not have finished it.
He set up a new email account for each individual online service.
He hosted a website from his own home server so he didn't have to host the files elsewhere (which is just awful for home network security).
He unplugged the home router and began scanning his devices and manually searching through the process list when his music stopped playing on the laptop several times (turns out he had a wobbly spacebar and the shaking washing machine provided enough jittering for a button press).
He brought his own privacy screen to work (remember, this is a security place, with like background checks and all sorts).
He gave his C programming coursework (a simple messaging program) 2048 bit encryption, which was not required.
He wrote a custom encryption for his other C programming coursework as well as writing out the enigma encryption because there was no library, again not required.
He bought a burner phone to visit the capital city.
He bought a burner phone whenever he left his hometown come to think of it.
He bought a smartphone online, wiped it and installed new firmware (it was Chinese; I'm not saying anything about the Chinese, you're the one thinking it).
He bought a smartphone and installed Kali Linux NetHunter so he could test WiFi networks he connected to before using them on his personal device.
(You might be noticing it's all he's. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't).
He ate a sim card.
He brought a balaclava to pentesting training (it was pretty meme).
He printed out his source code as a manual read-only method.
He made a rule on his academic email to block incoming mail from the academic body (to be fair this is a good spam policy).
He withdraws money from a different cashpoint everytime to avoid patterns in his behaviour (the irony).
He reported someone for hacking the centre's network when they built their own website for practice using XAMMP.
I'm going to stop there. I could tell you so many more stories about these guys, some about them being paranoid and some about the stupid antics Cyber Security and Information Assurance students get up to. Well done for making it this far. Hope you enjoyed it.26 -

Just remembered the project back in my bachelor CS classes. The Prof was so utterly busy that he did not even read my thesis which he had to grade. I once sent him a 2mb bulk from /dev/rand which I piped into 'documentation.pdf' and got an A.
Sometimes the worst professors are the best :D2 -
A group of Engineering professors were invited to fly in a plane.
Right after they were comfortably seated, they were informed the plane was built by their students.
All but one got off their seats and headed frantically to the exits in maniacal panic.
The one lone professor that stayed put, calmly in his seat, was asked: “Why did you stay put?”
“I have plenty of confidence in my students. Knowing them, I for a fact can assure you this piece of shit plane will never even start”

Get projects from companies and let students compete to complete those projects ,
Projects could be basic , but the students would get a good chance to see what is being done in real projects what tech is used.7 -
Finaly! I dont work anymore!
Few days ago my contract had ended. I dont need to go to that stupid factory and process 400 to 800 gears a day! Finaly I wont be all dirty, oily and dusty constantly!
Three months ago I decided to earn a bit of money to not waste my holiday time. (I could do my projects but im a lazy fuck and i would propably end up playing pc games). It was worth it. I earned aproximatley 500 freedom cash per month. (Thats A LOT in my country). It wasnt plesant experience tho. Dust was everywere, i had been working at heat treatment section of that factory (but i was using grinding machine, so yeah perfect place for that) so temperatures were ranging from 40°C to 50°C. I had to wear protective equipment as well!
If you think 36°C is hell try working there!
Im currently at student integration camp for new students. I hope that im going to have great time! Also lectures start next month. Im going to study electronic and computer engieering in english (in poland).
When the school finaly starts Im going to join few student clubs and i hope they are going to help me with my computer and electronic projects.
Thats all! Time to get drunk!2 -
Once in college I was walking around campus when I noticed that one of the classes were still teaching Fortran to their students as an introductory programming language.16

For God's sake! Coding standards should be a subject in university, where the students are thought the right way to name variables, indenting the code properly and many more things!8

So some student complained that the busses are to full in the morning (they are filled with students).
Student: "why don't they drive more busses?"
Me: "because that would raise prices of busses since more drivers and fuel is needed. It's simple economics"
Student: "Public transit already is way to expensive, they can easily drive more busses and trains for that"
Me: "public transit is already way to expensive.... Oh look! An iPhone, MacBook, AirPods, Apple Watch, Dr Martins and other overpriced shit you have with you now!"2 -
I can code better then most CS students, but if I want to go to university I have to take things like calculus... why65

In india
Teachers teach students to code, without any field experience
These students learns things tht they dont need in their life and becomes teachers

Lecturer I am a TA for said AT LEAST twice that the summaries should be executive summaries. With introduction, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion while explaining the assignment in class.
Notice the plural form of paragraphs. WHY THE HOLY HELL am I grading papers that are a paragraph, or don't progress fluidly. Or look like a 4th grader wrote them instead of a college student about to graduate????
It's not that hard.
And if i have to send one more email repeating the requirements one more time including "yes, i will deduct points for bad grammar" the class is getting DDoSed. Idgaf. This is university, people. You should know this. Can confirm i write executive summaries regularly. Bosses want updates.5 -
I mean I've read rants on here about people not knowing the basics of programming, but 15 lectures in I would assume that the other students knew the difference between a char and a string at least.
Guess not.3 -

I'm going to teach web dev at a coding school in a few months. In the teaching plan, students have to learn git. But we are told explicitly to only teach using github desktop and not the command line because it puts students off.
I'm not sure how to feel about this12 -
The first ever act of ecommerce happened in 1971 or 1972, when Stanford students used ARPANET to contact MIT students to buy some marijuana.
The first ever ecommerce act was a drug deal.4 -
So our teacher just has us sign up for a learning site called Gizmos with a ton of students information. A lot of students forgot their password as always and some didn't register with an email so I expected the teacher to reset them..
Then the teacher had students come up to the front of the f****** class and SHOWED THEM THEIR PASSWORD IN PLAIN TEXT. WHAT THE HELL4 -
Not asking students to learn the code. Seriously stop doing that.
Instead motivate them to understand the logic and then build it when required.3 -

I had two teachers in school, who even after finishing the class, continued to program with interested students. For example programming a robot or communicating over the serial port of a computer using Java.2

Rant much...
I just started working on project after a group of students.
The project has various of bugs (ofcourse) and not catched exceptions.
I found variables like 'abcd' or shorts of classes like 'rrms'.
I would be fine with all of that but there is one thing is just making me crazy:
THERE IS NO SINGLE FUCKING COMMENT IN WHOLE SOLUTION (three projects and about few hundred files with javascript and cs).
Imagine freaking pure react (no jsx) full of null arguments and multiple custom control written like 'var gl= GreenLabelled(null,null,text,5)' (a button ) with again, NO FUNCKING SINGLE COMMENT.
I just cannot stand it. Just spent 3hrs to wrapp my head around events in this react classes...10 -
A few days ago, a guy sent me a message on Fiverr asking me to create a website.
The good joke is that they are two engineering students who want me to do their programming exercise.

So I help teach a class of high schoolers to program and I want to pose a question, what can I do to give & better more interesting presentations, and what should I avoid?
Today I gave a presentation and the first half of showing them some practical things you can do with Python didn’t go as well which I figured would be a little boring,
but the second half I showed them a script I wrote to install fonts in Linux and I essentially set it up so that I could rewrite it in front of the class and I walked them through the process of rewriting it to show how useful loops are and they really enjoyed watching the process, so I thought about doing more stuff like that where I just walk them through problems but Idk
Let me know what you think I could do better17 -
Just noticed my Students Union sent out a newsletter for International Women's Week that went straight into the spam folder.

"oh yea, that's right, i remember now!"

We have been given two Spanish exchange students for 10 weeks. We are a UK based creative agency, the minor issue being they don't speak a word of English, so there is a significant language barrier.
What would people recommend for a way to help them learn some basic languages e.g HTML, CSS etc.. with such a significant language barrier.
(Already tried Google translating everything)
With my strong Yorkshire accent, my Spanish doesn't come out too great 👌4 -
F**k the education system. We have a project for each programming subject to which I am committed. Adding upon that, a startup company shows up from nowhere, with their mainstream project which is to be completed by students and in return we get a useless certificate for completing their modules. And the worst part is that they have kept it compulsory.
I don't know who is going to benefit more, the college, the students or the company.2 -
It was time of my grade 11 result.
When result was out, I asked my school coordinator about the number of students failed and he replied it was non of my business. I got back home, coded a script in python to fetch the result of 233 students and pass it to text a file. Printed it and gave it to the coordinator the next day, he was like "Ok, I'll tell computer science teacher to give you full marks on practicals"4 -
Currently i am working as a student at a teaching chair for embedded systems, so my boss is the professor there and the subject of this weeks story 😄
He is very passionate about his field and keeps close contact to the students and their representatives.
He invests a lot of resources into getting students to learn and make projects and pays us to supervise a hands on course for students to build IoT projects.
As employees we get to work on interesting projects and he listens to us and our concerns if we feel a project is having certain problems.1 -
I've heard about some of the ridiculous requirements that some companies have in job postings and always thought that they're probably over exaggerating a bit.
Holy shit was I wrong.
I've taken a look at the positions that they have posted for my coop program and while I understand that my college was not the only one posted to for these, they seem pretty extreme at times. There were a few postings that required several mountains of web frameworks and experience that unless you did a lot of self study prior or had previous professional work experience would have been impossible.
We're students, a lot of us have never touched an IDE prior to our program so to ask us for in some cases years of experience in a language or tool that I have never even heard of, nor have even been even vaguely mentioned by profs, seems a bit much. I have had years of experience in a fair variety of tools and languages but even for me this seemed a tad bit unreasonable. Not all of the postings require this much prior experience in the field so I can apply to some.
The professor teaching the preparation course says they can't understand why people apply for the coop program then don't apply to positions. While I understand there are people who might not apply due to laziness or an overflow of assignments, I feel like a good chunk just can't find any positions that they may be partially qualified for.3 -
"No kid we do not need students in their Sophomore year for our undergraduate STUDENTS internship, priorities for seniors, and even if you're in a senior year, you've to be having 6+ experience for Full Stack Mobile and Web application development for our Front-end role with the salary of $150 per month. Dropped out of college after two years, next week I’ll start to teach programming to students in the same college on behalf of the student union :) -
Before I dropped out of college,
We had a pretty big group-project.
We we're tasked creating a multiplayer version of "Labyrinth" in Java, using SE practices.
The problem was, that not all student that took the class were CS students.
So, me group consisted of 4 CS students , including me and 2 med-tech students.
Those two were nearly a dead weight.
They spoke nearly no German and only limited English,
Lied about their programming knowledge(non existent) and gave our profs false expectations about the final product.
I still can't imagine, why the uni thought they needed to take this class.2 -
Does downloading on all the scripts to a 3D webgl game to a free server so my friends could play it count?
-
Read this somewhere: Most students don't love programming so much because they are taught it as a science, while it is a craft.
Got me thinking. So true.7 -
// RANT
STUDENTS NEED MORE HANDS ON COURSES !
I'm doing a year abroad for the fourth year of my masters. I come from a school that really pushes projects, pitches and research forward while leaving in some theory.
Now that I'm at another uni in a different country I can't help but note how UNPREPARED students are for a professional setting ! And they are one year away from finishing their masters in Software Engineering...
Students should use version control tools, they should test their software, they should apply their knowledge to a concrete project ! A 3 hour course on software testing is only as good as its practical counterpart. -
I fucking hate it when professional rivalry affects the students. I am a student and for some unknown fukin reasons there is some kind of professional rivalry in the higher ends of my college. The effect of this is unwanted criticism and loads of pressure on us, the students, to outperform the students belonging to the other part (of the rivalry). What the fuck.
If you are in such a field, make sure that your rivalry with someone else does not affect the ones who seek knowledge and learning. It is not right to harass and exploit people who respect you and come to you for learning. It not only affects you but also whole lot of people who look forward for some kind of professional behaviour from you. Keep rivalry away from students. Work for what is necessary and get the things done. It is as simple.4 -
Somebody asked me for help on their thesis, gave them advise, how they should do it, what are the best practices on implementing things...
I asked the today how are they doing? They answered, we paid someone to do it, we can't do it...
Damn are they even studying and doing their daily programming practice???4 -
Just had someone branch off my repo of some class assignments I did last year.
What are they up to.....
Better not be doing what I think he's doing.5 -
When it's the first day of a QA Automation bootcamp and the other students think you should be the teacher.. =_=3

First time programming for work... Man in the middle student password changes. Yep that's right I'm being asked to write a program that will change students passwords on their Google accounts and local domain while also keeping a decryptable format password in a database. Granted it's much better than not letting students change their passwords at all. Plus were doing it because it will let us fix their issues while their out of school so...8

Classmate: Dude, can you help me for our project? Its website.
Me: Sure, what you used?

I love when CS students that do not know the difference between class and object complain that the exam they just passed was too difficult because they didn't get first...4
-
Actually having exercises to try so that the 90% of CS students that learn by doing can learn. Rather than writing down theory1

Editors ask me to build a web application for students that consisted of 21 separate pages, 55 images, and 29 interactives. They want this in 1 month. I'm the only designer and developer.5

//not an actual rant
Just curious how many non software students/employers/people code while it is not their main profession5 -
My college taught CS on Windows 7.
You weren't allowed to install things either.
And students only used GUI programming environments.1 -

Is it normal, that most IT students there are such dumbfucks?6 -
Any Indian students here?. Are you guys still using Turboo C++ to teach programming?.

So,the lecturer is discussing with the other lecturers to not let us cs101 students use lists when writing our Python solutions because he says that the students don't know how to think in terms of lists.fuck, coz literally every single solution of mine used lists. If they subtract marks,i will not put up with that.Just because the other students have absolutely damn no clue about what they doing when they using lists it doesn't mean they can stop me.3

Today I'll visit a university and get a little taste of what they're teaching. The sad part is that the interesting courses are all at the same time.
What on earth is "Computerlinguistik" (computational linguistics)?
And I'm not sure where to go other times as well because literally NONE of these 7 parallel courses are of any interest for me. I'll probably go in Germanistik and Linguistik (german and english) since the IT stuff and financial explanations when studying are all at the same time. Who organized that shit...
Other than that, I hope I'll not get lost on the campus and have enough energy on my phone to distracted me of boring co- I mean taking notes, obviously
Also 3h on the bus. Yay.7 -
Fucking shitty ass educational products fucking really suck. Literally, one of the schools we work for has a piece of software called Blackboard that seems great and all until you realize that its written in Java and you have students and teachers who barely know how to turn on a computer using this thing! I'm not even kidding when I say that one student can bring the entire thing to its knees just by causing it to throw a NullPointerException and to make matters worse teachers are allowed to customize their "classrooms" which as part of that they are allowed to add plugins. Some of which also cause fucking headaches and NullPointerExceptions. The least these fuckers could have done was switched their code to Kotlin or something that could actually handle improper types without crashing the whole damn thing.6

We have been at a university of applied sciences today with our class.
It was kind of ok. I did expect more surprising things there. The whole building was smaller than our college (not the same as in the US). The rooms, where profs tell you things with a series of rows of seats, were dirty and pretty much used to the point that the seats are about to break easily.
I was expecting the university to be kind of the same as the universities you see in the movies lol.
It could have at least been bigger than our college and more "modern" than our school.
[...]
Anyways, let us get to the point here.
We were first in the foyer and afterwards in their main lecture hall.
We were introduced to the day's plans by a team of engaged students from different study programs and the president of the professors. Yada yada yada.
We got the full program in each room and each individual time span filled with study programs on a sheet of paper.
I did select pharmacy, media production, architecture, data science, applied computer science, computer engineering, mechanical engineering and future energies.
Pharmacy and data science were the most interesting study programs to me. I have asked one of the professors if deep learning was a topic for bachelor students, as well.
He said that that is only the usual case for people who got a promotion.
As an example he told me that yesterday he was at a conference hall with 10.000 people in which he gave a talk about deep learning. "Most of them were professors" he said. "Since this study program is new, it might change in a few years" he added to his conversation.
It is quite hard having to decide now.
Geo informatics and Aerospace Engineering did sound interesting, too.
There are a lot of things I would like to study at the same time haha.
Idk if I should just pick mechanical engineering first and add one or two after it to it. But that would take a lot of time. Geez.7 -
Is it just here in my school that students think if you are studying game design in college you are fat fk anime lover sh*t weaboo who play games all day :/4

I'm mostly .NET Dev, working on OCR thingy, but I started as Java, Android Dev. After my boss's crappy management and burning out our two mobile devs he has assigned me to finish one app. For past four days I've worked around the clock to finish as much of functionalities as I could but it simply wasn't possible, especially because project was still changing when though deadline was around 15.12.17. Yesterday I've done as much as I could and now we have to wait for the client to either accept it or break the contract.
To be frank, I think that losing money would be like a bucket of cold water for my boss. All of us, me and those two mobile devs I have mentioned earlier, are students. We have exams right now. "Senior" Dev is only year older and will soon be applying for his engineering degree. Year after year situation like this occurs and boss haven't learn a thing.1 -
I am a programming teacher in a local university, I started five years ago, but in this semester I feel very tired, the students don't want to learn. I tray many methodologies and practical protects but the interest show by they is very low. the worst thing is that in anonymous evaluation I get good score but my objective is that students become in a great programmers ¿any advice?2

No wonder I feel like I'm going insane. -
So DTU just decided to update one of the central systems, they project that the system will be offline for about 12 hours.
Just so happens that IT'S THE FUCKING SYSTEM THAT ALL STUDENTS NEED TO USE RIGHT FUCKING NOW.
Just about everyone has to hand in assignments tonight! 🙄
Well, I guess it's better than deploying on a Friday... (it's Wednesday) IF IT WASN'T BECAUSE THE STUDENTS ARE ON FUCKING VACATION FOR THE ENTIRE NEXT WEEK!

So, my university has a mandatory community service program where basically students are sent to help developing infrastructure and society in undeveloped parts of the country. I and my team are going to depart in the end of this month.
We're going to help raising IT-literacy level by teaching high school students basic programming with Scratch or Python. Is that too much? Should we just start with teaching Ms. Office instead? Or do you guys have any opinion?4 -

First semester tutorials are fun (spoiler they can be frustrating).
Today my University held an entry level tutorial for LaTeX, which I had already visited a year ago and offered to help and boy ohh boy was that painful. For your information all of these students want to study computer science.
From around 50 people there was only one person who used Linux and I thought "Well at least one".
I was even more impressed as the other tutors asked me to help her because she used Manjaro (also the distribution I use).
As i helped her installing texstudio (the software presented) I needed her to enter the root (?) password and she answered "Which password, it's the laptop of my sister, I thought the laptop had windows installed".
Everything worked out fine but this was only the beginning.
After an hour came the first exercise in which the students had to build a simple document and for everyone who doesn't know LaTeX, it's a markdown language which heavily relies on \ and {}.
And there laid the other most common problem, some Mac users didn't even know how to write a \ or {}.
At least I had some fun helping them but if you want to study computer science you should be able to know how to write some of the most common symbols in programming languages. -
Yesterday, I met with my old friends in school probably after 2 years, more changed than expected. All now grownup.
Love the scenario of hundred students gathering up3 -
My housemate (we are college students) once said he was finding it weird his name wasn't in the list of students to take the exam of a programming subject he had but he couldnt find a reason to explain it.
A few days later he came into my room frustrated as hell but laughing at the same time. "I have to stop taking headphones to class... I've figured it out. I failed already for being absent because when the teacher registered the students present I had my headphones on e every time and couldn't hear him..." 😂😂😂 -
Anybody in lead positions, have you had much success with work term / intern students? I’m considering offering 2 positions for students at my local college to get a couple helping hands and help these people out.4

Helloo Seniors! Just a short intro, I'm currently doing my Degree in Computer Science and I would be eternally grateful if you could help me out to come out with a cool/interesting title for one of my projects. The system I be creating is pretty simple, It would go through the list of students and what classes are they taking and it would detect if any of the students' classes are colliding with each other, eg: starts at the same time.11

Business study is one of the most complicated areas of study that poses a great challenge to students who want to choose the essay topics for their final research papers. The reason is that this field of study has many different bit yet similar sub-disciplines that discuss almost the same thing. Many teachers advise their students to use the little money that they get to buy essay from qualified writers on https://familyessay.org/ and boost their chances of completing their studies as expected. Statistics indicates that those students who choose essay topics for themselves take longer time to complete their studies as compared to those students who buy essay. The reason is that essay writers choose essay topics that do not pose great problems to the students when it comes to writing. The students may prepare their final papers on such essay topics without any problem or even buy essay from existing research writing companies. Many people choose to buy the essay topics before presenting them to the writing companies that prepare the final papers and present them to those students who buy essay.
Essay topics may look similar but the chances that the contents of the papers will be the same are very limited. For one to buy essay on certain essay topics, teachers advise them to ensure that the papers are free of plagiarism. Plagiarism does not mean that students buy essay on essay topics that other students have already selected. Students who buy essay on same essay topic but with different contents are not guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism detection tools are therefore important whenever one decides to buy essay that students expect to present in class.1 -
