I'm gonna start working remote starting September, communication seems hard

@Kage I've been having some trouble with comunication myself, mostly because I'm learning the job and I need orientation

@darksideofyay Im gonna work remote for a company I've been working with for 3 years now (on and off).
Your situation sounds a lot more complex.

I think lots of Skyping is a good solution 😋

Before I had kids, working remote was great. No distractions, so I could focus. But now I have to go to the office to avoid distractions. I have the option to work from home at all times, but I only do it on Fridays.

@bahua This. Except I opt to drive the 35 minutes to the office on Fridays, too, because distractions.

Love it, no time wasted on trafic, flexible work time, as long as you are responsible this is great

I work remote with my kids at home (my wife stays home with them too). It’s amazing. I set some expectations with my
family like don’t come into my office when the door is closed. From a work perspective we have a GREAT remote culture ... but it’s all about the tools your team uses. Hangouts, Slack, and the Wiki are integral parts of our remote lives.

I’ve had some bad remote jobs too- again tools and team culture dictate. There was no chat software and we used Skype for meetings.... it sucked.

    My security in remote work:
    - A large part of my department is remote
    - Live and Die through Slack chats
    - Established documentation practices
    - Manager is also remote

Warning signs of a bad remote gig:
    - Is remote “a new thing” for the company ?
    - You’re the only one 5+ time zones away
    - Your boss forgets your name (Yup, happened to me)
    - Conference rooms don’t have cameras permanently installed for video chats

It was easier for me when we only had one kid, but we have two now, so my office has become my daughter's nursery. I'm able to use it in the morning, but by naptime, I have to move to my table kit downstairs, and then my wife can't watch her silly reality shows when I have a call. We are saving for a bigger place where I can have a dedicated office, but that's still probably at least a year away.
