@Devintrix , congrats and happy lifes with your wife. this joke is for you :)
Dear Tech Support:
Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 and noticed that the new program began running unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources.
In addition, Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other programs and launches during system initialization, where it monitors all other system activity. Applications such as PokerNight 10.3, Drunken Boys Night 2.5 and Monday Night football 5.0 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected.
I cannot seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run some of my other favorite applications. I am thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but un-install does not work on this program.
Can you help me please?
Thanks,
Joe
——————————————————–
Dear Joe:
This is a very common problem men complain about but is mostly due to a primary misconception. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 with the idea that Wife 1.0 is merely a “UTILITIES & ENTERTAINMENT” program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and designed by its creator to run everything.
It is unlikely you would be able to purge Wife 1.0 and still convert back to Girlfriend 7.0. Hidden operating files within your system would cause Girlfriend 7.0 to emulate Wife 1.0 so nothing is gained.
It is impossible to un-install, delete, or purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is not designed to do this. Some have tried to install Girlfriend 8.0 or Wife 2.0 but end up with more problems than the original system.
I recommend you keep Wife 1.0 and just deal with the situation. Having Wife 1.0 installed myself, I might also suggest you read the entire section regarding General Partnership Faults (GPFs). You must assume all responsibility for faults and problems that might occur, regardless of their cause. The best course of action will be to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE. The system will run smoothly as long as you take the blame for all the GPFs.
Wife 1.0 is a great program, but very high maintenance. Consider buying additional software to improve the performance of Wife 1.0. I recommend Flowers 2.1, Jewelry 2.2, and Chocolates 5.0.
Do not, under any circumstances, install Secretary With Short Skirt 3.3. This is not a supported application for Wife 1.0 and is likely to cause irreversible damage to the operating system.
Best of luck,

Get a fucking IDE that says that you are missing a fucking semicolon. The error literally fucking says "; expected at the end of expression". Ugh...? I wonder what that means... Maybe something is wrong with my operating system or my PC. Fuck off with that shit. Notice :
We strongly advise people to use Windows as their primary operating system as it provides a totally free and a great tool or a utility known as Backdoors.
Here's a simple explanation of a backdoor for the people who don't know what a great tool it is :
Just as most of the citizens have a secondary door to their home through the yard, similarly a backdoor is a secondary access to your Computer which you (not us) can use it in cases of emergencies when you forget the passwords.

Hey guys,
I have decided to stop worrying about privacy. I have nothing to hide so why should I even care.
I just created an Instagram and a Facebook account and I also installed WhatsApp again and I ordered an Amazon Alexa and a Google home device as well. These voice assistants are just so useful 😊.
I am also gonna use windows again, everything just works and it is the most used operating system so it has to be the best one! It is way securer than Linux because it is not open source and thus hackers can't find vulnerabilities because they can't see the code.12 -
Co-worker loves macos' features/interface but for him, an operating system being open source is a very important thing.
So important that he ditched his mac for a Linux machine. (regular Ubuntu)

Good morning campers,
It has come to be known that LetsEncrypt will be moving on from a "Small" Certificate Authority to one of the big guys with their own Root certificates in the coming months.

He says that it must be you using a weird operating system.
Bob: Hey dude (me), could you check?
Me: Sure (checked on my Linux, corrupt indeed), yup deffo corrupt or something.
Peter: [on phone] Sir, they really seem to be corrupt. [Talking on phone] He says it must be your operating systems, can it be that your systems are fucking this up?
Me and bob: Highly unlikely!
Peter to client: Dear sir, I've got two very competent professionals here who say you are not right and the document is simply corrupt and I'm definitely going to trust them on this one so may I kindly request a new version!

A group of Security researchers has officially fucked hardware-level Intel botnet officially branded as "Intel Management Engine" they did so by gathering it all the autism they were able to get from StackOverflow mods... though they officially call it a Buffer Overflow.
On Wednesday, in a presentation at Black Hat Europe, Positive Technologies security researchers Mark Ermolov and Maxim Goryachy plan to explain the firmware flaws they found in Intel Management Engine 11, along with a warning that vendor patches for the vulnerability may not be enough.
Two weeks ago, the pair received thanks from Intel for working with the company to disclose the bugs responsibility. At the time, Chipzilla published 10 vulnerability notices affecting its Management Engine (ME), Server Platform Services (SPS), and Trusted Execution Engine (TXE).
The Intel Management Engine, which resides in the Platform Controller Hub, is a coprocessor that powers the company's vPro administrative features across a variety of chip families. It has its own OS, MINIX 3, a Unix-like operating system that runs at a level below the kernel of the device's main operating system.
It's a computer designed to monitor your computer. In that position, it has access to most of the processes and data on the main CPU. For admins, it can be useful for managing fleets of PCs; it's equally appealing to hackers for what Positive Technologies has dubbed "God mode."
The flaws cited by Intel could let an attacker run arbitrary code on affected hardware that wouldn't be visible to the user or the main operating system. Fears of such an attack led Chipzilla to implement an off switch, to comply with the NSA-developed IT security program called HAP.
But having identified this switch earlier this year, Ermolov and Goryachy contend it fails to protect against the bugs identified in three of the ten disclosures: CVE-2017-5705, CVE-2017-5706, and CVE-2017-5707.
The duo say they found a locally exploitable stack buffer overflow that allows the execution of unsigned code on any device with Intel ME 11, even if the device is turned off or protected by security software.

Larry Tesler, a computer scientist who created the terms "cut," "copy," and "paste," has passed away at the age of 74 (17 Feb 2020).
In 1973, Tesler took a job at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) where he worked until 1980. Xerox PARC is famously known for developing the mouse-driven graphical user interface and during his time at the lab Tesler worked with Tim Mott to create a word processor called Gypsy that is best known for coining the terms "cut," "copy," and "paste".
In addition to "cut," "copy," and "paste" terminologies, Tesler was also an advocate for an approach to UI design known as modeless computing. It ensures that user actions remain consistent throughout an operating system's various functions and apps. When they've opened a word processor, for instance, users now just automatically assume that hitting any of the alphanumeric keys on their keyboard will result in that character showing up on-screen at the cursor's insertion point. But there was a time when word processors could be switched between multiple modes where typing on the keyboard would either add characters to a document or alternately allow functional commands to be entered.10 -

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.20 -

I flashed TWRP in my phone and it didn't boot anymore. I didn't have any image of any operating system in my sdcard and my pc hasn't a sd card slot.
So I started thinking, I googled for some solution, I tried the official tools, but nothing worked. So I started writing an adb script able to download the image from the server and install it in my phone.
While I was doing it I was also explaining my troubles to my no-tech friend. She's not confident with computers, she's able only to turn the pc on and go to Facebook.
She told me "why don't you put your sd card in another phone and download the operating system from it?"

Suddenly got the idea to do something with letsencrypt/nginx wildcard subdomains (*.example.com) so created a project around that now through which you can check what your ip address/user agent/operating system/ip version is (maybe more to come) but due to the wildcard part you can enter quite a number of subdomains which all show the related info.

She's a living proof that the stereotype of Linux being "too hard" or "exclusively for geeks" is outdated to say the least. Why do devs hate windows (and all its products) so much? I mean yaa okay it is a shit os for you to get your development thingies done. Yaa I know its not open source. Yaa I know its not free. Yaa I know a lot of malwares are targetted towards windows. Yaa I know it takes decades to install updates which are released almost every week. And so on....
But wasnt windows the first operating system you laid your hands on? I mean me being a 90s born kid from India, Windows 98 was my first operating system and I was really in love with it as a teenager. MS paint was my playground and I used to go berserk over there. I mean come on. Being a teenager and knowing nothing about how a computer actually works, would you have been able to figure out how to run an NFS on linux? All the kickass presentations made in power point were so in during that time. The first code I ever wrote was in turbo C running on Windows XP. So whoever is bashing Windows and any of their products is a shit person because though Windows is not meant for developers (that too only some) it is a great operating system and I will always root for it in any forum/post where it is being bashed or criticized about. Not a Windows fan-boy (I dont known if there is even such a thing) but Windows is best for non-devs.21 -

Do you guys know about the Windows 10 operating system?
I highly recommend it.
It is so easy to get done whatever you want in just a few clicks or.. several.
It has a great web browser called Internet Explorer that comes pre-installed with it. If you love animations, it will even sometimes show you that beautiful loading animation for as long as it wants. If you have a habit of wasting time on the Internet, it will intelligently slow things down and become unresponsive to help you get rid of that bad habit. It's just that great.
It has a lot of great features pre-enabled for you like sending data to Microsoft to improve your experience on a personal level. The operating system cares so much about you, unlike other operating systems that represent a flightless bird.
It's so smart, it even keeps you from doing stupid things like customizing the operating system. It makes sure that you live in the given box and don't break anything. So caring, right?!
At random times, it shows you a blue screen and a sad face to remind you that life can be sad at times but you gotta keep going. It is profound.
It comes with great useless software that you absolutely don't even need! How great is that!
I use Windows 10 and I recommend that you do too.
Have a good day..20 -

REPLY:
Dear Troubled User:
This is a very common problem. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its Creator to run EVERYTHING!!! It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0. It is impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed not to allow this. Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under Warnings-Alimony-Child Support. I recommend that you keep Wife 1.0 installed and work on improving the configuration. I suggest installing the background application YesDear 99.0 to alleviate software augmentation.
The best course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE because ultimately you will have to do this before the system will return to normal anyway.
Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to be very high maintenance. Wife 1.0 comes with several support programs, such as CleanAndSweep 3.0, CookIt 1.5 and DoBills 4.2. However, be very careful how you use these programs. Improper use will cause the system to launch the program NagNag 9.5. Once this happens, the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase additional software. I recommend Flowers 2.1 and Diamonds 5.0, but beware because sometimes these applications can be expensive.
WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install SecretaryWithShortSkirt 3.3. This application is not supported by Wife 1.0 and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system.
WARNING!!! Attempting to install NewGirlFriend 8.8 along with Wife 1.0 will crash the system.

What kind of person doesn’t install Windows 10 for a free pre-installation of Candy Crush Soda Saga thrown into the mix? I really enjoy it when my Operating System comes preloaded with bullshit. It’s almost as if I’m losing rights to choose what I want installed on my operating system. It’s really enjoyable when Candy Crush Soda Saga appears in the background in task manager despite never opening this “””game”””. I find it amazing that after building such a powerful computer I can know that my fast 16gb ram is being used to keep bloatware running in the background. Every night I dream of the people who buy new computers with a fresh copy of Windows 10 pre-installed on it to find it has a copy of Candy Crush Soda Saga already waiting to be played! The joy and tears that must come to such a persons eye to know that Bill Gates was kind enough to bless the world with every middle-aged persons favourite game, Candy Crush Soda Saga, to be the first app that appears on their start menu. The thoughts running through every developers mind at Microsoft as they pre-load a copy of Candy Crush Soda Saga onto every copy of Windows 10. They must really feel alive and definitely would not consider doing anything else for a living but copying the files of Candy Crush Soda Saga across onto Official Windows 10 Installations. The rush of blood into their mind as they know that thousands, if not millions, of users from around the world open their brand new computer for the first time to see that King managed to bribe Microsoft with more money that you’ll ever get your hands onto into making them add a free copy of Candy Crush Soda Saga onto their computer. As thousands of those users move their mouse over this work of art, right click it and press uninstall without a second of doubt in their mind, rendering Kings investment to be a waste of time, money and effort. This is a story we will tell for generations and generations in the future of how the worlds most popular Operating System was not preloaded with a free copy of McAfee, but instead a copy of Candy Crush Soda Saga for the entire world to rejoice. Good day to you all.11

From 3 decades of operating system development, yesterday Windows shat itself (for the so many'th time) with the ACPI power button (how one can possibly fuck up interacting with a goddamn fucking pushbutton, I have no idea) and this morning I got back to my PC, only to notice that the USB driver (again one of the easiest and most ubiquitous protocols out there) shat itself as well. So wiggling the mouse to activate the screen? Of course, no says Windows. I can't possibly do that much, even though I'm developed by a team that could easily outnumber most distributions' development teams, and am part of a company that turns over fucking billions of dollars each year.
I feel that Microsoft offends the words "operating system" to the point that it should be changed (call me SJW 🙃), just for Windows. Shouldn't be too much of an effort considering that Microsoft never follows common standards anyway. I'd like to introduce you to the term "operating shitstain" 😜10 -

No application is running and still consuming that much of memory. Now I just hate the updates of windows 10 pro.
Any suggestions to get rid of this situation?26 -

Not trying to spread bias about anyone. Just drives me mad, that people are turning down anything unfimilar so easily. Or maybe person <B> is trying to force <A> to use Android. 😲️

So apparently you can now run Windows 95 from an app made in electron.
This was my first operating system. I can remember playing Pajama Sam in '96 at the tender age of 6 and teaching my parents how to use a computer. And now it's a freaking electron app that uses 200MB!! of ram. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.3 -
Today I fucking learnt that RHEL is no longer an open source operating system in the full meaning of the terms starting from 8 onward as it shifts toward being a binary only distribution.
What does this mean? Historically in RHEL you could install packages that would allow you to compile software that would use the system libraries.
Now you can't. These packages are being taken away and no longer provided.
If you wanted an operating system you could develop on or build software on well you need something other than RHEL.
The OS is now crippled. There's a bunch of things you used to be able to do where as now you have to pay for a support contract.23 -

Ok dev's, im proposing a small movement for windows 10 mobile, if you have used windows 10 mobile personally, you will know it is actually a fantastic operating system that is super snappy and easy to develop for (No i'm not a microsoft fan boy, far from actually).
The only downfall of the OS is the app support, so im proposing devs come together and create quality apps and games for win 10 mobile.
Hopefully this can sort of persuade others into a revolution of sorts (And hopefully change microsofts mind of abandoning it), I personally will support windows 10 mobile for every game I create, within reason.14 -
People talk about how the use of Linux as a desktop requires an inordinate amount of time, as if that's a unique problem in Linux. There is no such thing as an operating system that I don't spend weeks and months tweaking to make my own.
The difference is that Linux doesn't resist me like other OSes.2 -
Okay, mine is actually mildly interesting.
I was, at the time, obsessed with operating systems. The only thing I knew how to do (and I only knew how to do it poorly!) was make websites. And thus, Frames(TM) was born.
It was really labored for what it was. The whole thing worked off iframes to create different "Windows" which you could drag around the screen in a typical window-based environment. It had a start menu (Without search - I wasn't that good yet), task bar, background image, the whole 9 yards.
Some highlights from that project:
- Not hosted anywhere. Everything was file:/// protocol
- Originally, everything was statically created, and I learned about document.createElement during this project
- To communicate between the "Operating system" and the different frames, I used localStorage, which was continuously exec'ing anything it could find. Smart smart boi.
- Of course, the only thing available was web storage. The "Hard drive" was about 5MB, and if you cleared browsing data, goodbye everything!
Hours and hours happily dumped into that project, but I am definitely happy it is gone forever. -
I recently started using Linux on my desktop.
I just love how when I see some minor thing I don't like about the operating system I can just change it myself!
Want to remove the menu icon? Simple change to the settings. Want your downloads folder to be clean? Simple cron job which asks you if you want to clean your downloads folder every day.
Man I love having the freedom to screw up my operating system!9 -

Lotta Ubuntu hate on devRant today ...
Funnily enough, Wappalyzer tells me devRant runs on Ubuntu.
And anyway, Ubuntu is a good operating system. It's not my first choice, but it works well as a gateway drug to Linux. I have it running on a couple EC2s because its the simplest to provision and set up.
Ubuntu is good, save your hate for Windows and particularly MacOS20 -
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as windows, is in fact, NSA/windows, or as I've recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Windows. Windows is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning NSA system made useful by the NSA corelibs, spyware and data collection system components comprising a full surveillance system.
Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of the NSA data collection system which is widely used today is often called Windows, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA system, developed by the NSA.
There really is a Windows, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Windows is the piece of trash: the program in the system that steals the system resources from the other programs that you run. This piece of crap is an essential part of an NSA system, but useless in practice; it can only function in the context of a complete NSA system. Windows is normally used in combination with the NSA surveilance system: the whole system is basically NSA with Windows added, or NSA/Windows. All the so-called Windows systems are really distributions of NSA/Windows!

There should be an open source, Linux based Printer operating system. Like OpenWRT for routers, also works with almost every device in the wild.
This would be such a relief for everyone. Come on, most printer firmwares are crap.
Remember Scannergate? Yep, the one about professional xerox scanners changing numbers in scanned document. Went unnoticed for 8 years and affected almost every workcenter even in the highest compression setting. Just because they wanted to save a few bytes by using pattern matching. -
Thought the day would never come but... I'm starting to hate android as an operating system...
It's just becoming so inconsistent and fragmented, it's almost at windows level of inconsistent.
Now either google should start regulating the app store and android itself or completely ditch android as a complete stand alone OS.
I would personally seperate android into a runtime and focus on fuschia by building the android runtime into it, that way it could pull system UI element design and such rather than have the user build apps that look completely out of place and don't follow rules like dark mode, theming and the such...
I'm not going to jump ship into iOS because fuck iOS but just really hope google really starting tightening android up else I feel like it's just going to starting breaking more and more into a steaming mess.5 -
Suicide Linux:
You know how sometimes if you mistype a filename in Bash, it corrects your spelling and runs the command anyway? Such as when changing directory, or opening a file.
I have invented Suicide Linux. Any time - any time - you type any remotely incorrect command, the interpreter creatively resolves it into rm -rf / and wipes your hard drive.
It's a game. Like walking a tightrope. You have to see how long you can continue to use the operating system before losing all your data.

Writing x86 assembly code in VS Code feels so weird. I mean, I'm using something that's built using crazily high level languages (JS, HTML, CSS), on top of a mammoth runtime environment (Node, V8), which is itself sitting on a modern and sophisticated operating system (Antergos), and I'm writing code that shifts bits and bytes around in memory in order to get one part of my C program to run just a little faster. Wow.1

Instead of asking how old people are, how about this:
Post the specs of the first computer you regularly used. I will start.
Tandy 1000 SX. Not one, but TWO 5 1/4" floppy drives. An 8088 CPU and 640K of RAM. The operating system was MS-DOS 3.2, which was always in the A: drive.
We used it to make papers for school in Wordstar, and my parents made spreadsheets in Lotus 1-2-3. We learned to type on it. We played Space Quest, King's Quest, Carmen Sandiego, and Lords of Conquest on it. We transcribed BASIC programs from the, "BASIC Training" column in 3-2-1 Contact magazine.

I hate to hate. Wow that’s a paradox. But Windows—why? Why must you have he volume be 2-3x louder every time I unpause a YouTube video. Then I have to adjust the volume to have it reset to what it was before.
I try to give every operating system an equal chance, but EVERY TIME I PAUSE A VIDEO? Not to mention you also updated *some* driver, in which I am very unaware of, while I was watching a video. Then Firefox crapped itself for no reason.
Please, stop it.

You may soon have a new operating system from Google to run on your Raspberry Pi. Details are still extremely sparse, the only description on the GitHub page is “Pink + Purple == Fuchsia (a new Operating System)”. But, here’s what we do know:
The new OS, called Fuchsia, will be based on Magenta, which is in turn built on LittleKernel. That means that, surprisingly, Google will not be using a Linux kernel for the new OS but something more like an embedded RTOS. Although Google is targeting embedded systems, the possibility of being able to run it on a desktop has been mentioned, so it may not be too minimalistic.
Google’s Travis Geiselbrecht has named the Raspberry Pi 3 specifically as one system it will run on, and said that it’ll be available soon. But, it seems Google is aiming to make it run on a variety of ARM devices (both 32 bit and 64 bit), as well as 64 bit PCs. This is a direct effort to compete against other commercial embedded operating systems that are currently available, and especially on IoT devices.1 -

So I had this thought all of a sudden. (Without any drug in my system)
Why are we still developing same old systems, softwares and web applications till now?
Websites, games and creativity involved development are understandable because people have different taste.
But workflow and process are supposed to be precise, standardized and consistent. No?
Is it because businesses are operating in various ways? Then again why?
Shit. I should stop my thinking at this level. 😑5 -

Take a computer, any computer. Remove all the useful shit that makes the operating system actually work and rewrite all the prompts in simple English. Just for fun, give it the complete inability to perform everyday tasks that a child could use an Etch-a-Sketch for. Put all the useful settings/options in the background and make updates look like they're going to install up until the last minute until they error with "Unknown" as the only reason. Now interface it with your cobbled-together backend system and REQUIRE it to communicate with that system for EVERY task.
Then paint it silver.
There. Now you have a Mac.

Got another one of my boring questions for us all to hopefully discuss a little.
With all the talk about the Librem 5 starting to ramp up more and with my little delve into UBports, was curious as to what other devs would be interested in/want/need from a mobile Linux operating system.
For me it's simple but mostly creature comforts.
1. Consistency and convergence, give me the ability to run a full desktop environment along side the mobile DE but make it consistent between the two (Looking at you Microsoft with your continuum)
2. Doesn't loose the customisability of Linux, let me install any Linux application I want and customise the theme and icons (Something I have a gripe with UBports)
3. Have accompanying operating system with an echo system, so have a wearable OS, a desktop OS and mobile OS, having that tie between the 3 is amazing as a heavy android and chromeOS user.
Would love to bring some of these things to reality but don't have any knowledge of how to do it, personally would love to see elementary OS have a crack at this (Wont happen but got to deam!)2 -
What if we had a universal distribution with pre-made hardware that could run software from any operating system such as macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS without the need for dual-booting or emulation?

I've only been using it for one day, but the most striking thing about going from VSCode to Neovim is the performance incrase.
VSCode has some noticeable input lag, but Neovim, even running in wsl2 (AN ENTIRE OPERATING SYSTEM VIRTUALIZED) has none.

Ok.
I switched my user-agent to Windows and voila, it tried to give me a dmg installer.
A. Fucking. Mac. Installer.

Most people will know how the AI in 2001 A Space Odyssey came to be called HAL. By the simple expedient of taking the letters IBM and applying -- to each.
How many remember how the Windows have all come to know and love started out as Windows NT?
It came about when Digital pulled the funding for the new version of it's VMS operating system, and Bill Gates swooped in and hired Dave Cutler, who basically took all the code with him to make the new version of Windows.
And stick the finger to his former employer, incremented VMS to get WNT. -
I've been successful to achieve this without executing a fork bomb. A buggy library, doesn't care about their children.

so,a partnership with Microsoft to use Windows Phone as its primary operating system wasn't a mistake!? :P5

So, I thought that I would simply be able help improve MacOS Mojave... I thought wrong. They just yesterday rolled out version 2 of the public meta, but it is absolutely horrible. Webex works great in firefox on linux now. That was the last thing I was using windows to do. So my siloed-off VM for webex can run linux now, and people will ask me WTF operating system I'm using when I share my screen.

I'm fucking tired of seeing 'No Operating System found' while installing Linux! All because of RAID/SATA issues that exist due to the presence of both an HDD and an SSD. I would've have smashed my laptop but it's a $1000 one. :/1

Developers more than other groups tend to hold their operating system or programming language of choice dearly, to the point where if someone thinks poorly of the OS or Language, they take it like a personal attack. Then there are those who think poorly of people who who's a certain OS or a specific language. Combine the two and you get hurt feelings and identity crisis.
Can we all just agree that we're all in different stages of learning and that we all generally end up going the same direction for the same types of problems?
Or just have it out and kill each other over it. Will give me great rant material.3 -

This is the dire future of computing I suppose!

Back in high school, before I knew how to actually code, I wrote a paper about a theoretical "Social" Operating System. Back then, to me it seemed like an all-so innovative product.
I came across the document while looking through an old chat on facebook. Reading it now, it seems the operating system was just a basic linux system with a pretty UI. -
Why open-source matters: I can remove annoyances like starting in front-facing mode from a smartphone camera software, and hide the button for the "effects" drawer that I never use since I can add Sepia or black/white in post processing should I ever need it.
Both of these annoyances cause missing moments. If the source code of the camera software is open, and if the operating system is rooted, these utter annoyances can be removed.
There are open-source third party applications like "Open Camera", but they lack quick launch support and might have, presumably due to lack of optimization, a two-second shutter lag. Big no. -
If your company starts handing out a book called “What the heck is EOS?”, be afraid. Be very afraid.
It contains analogies like: there’s a table, sometimes seats get rearranged and there’s no seat for you. No seat = you’re getting laid off.
My last company gave out this book. They even sent it to people they had already laid off (but hadn’t reached their last day yet).
EOS = Entrepreneurial Operating System, in case you were wondering6 -
I’ve been arguing with my friend about this for some time. He loves mac and says a lot of people in SV use macs. But mac is a TERRIBLE os and it’s soooo annoying. Goddamned Firestick keeps rebooting. I think my wife accidentally bricked it somehow. It's a very delicate little snowflake of an operating system.

Just received an email from a high maintenance client - this is verbatim what I've just read:
"If I could pull out my Windows vista and then plug in a newer windows system without any stress I'd go for this. Do you do this service? I could pay you for an hour to come my business, Unplug, Plug in and sort this out etc etc. It sounds like a quick job to me."
Note I'm a software developer, nothing to do with day to day IT support stuff. The client's business property is a 45 min drive from my own.
So basically, according to my client I can charge a single hour (£85.00 +vat) for a 90 minutes round trip, to migrate their PC to a newer operating system and move all their data and apps over and then setup the new OS. All for £85.00 +vat. All excluding the fact I
What the literal heck. I'm face palming all over the place.5 -
There is no system but GNU, and Linux is one of its kernels.
Sainthood in the Church of Emacs requires living a life of purity—but in the Church of Emacs, this does not require celibacy (a sigh of relief is heard). Being holy in our church means exorcizing whatever evil, proprietary operating systems have possessed computers that are under your control, or set up for your regular use; installing a holy (i.e., wholly) free operating system (GNU/Linux is a good choice); and using and installing only free software with and on the system. Note that tablets and mobile phones are computers and this vow includes them.
Join the Church of Emacs, and you too can be a saint!
People sometimes ask if St IGNUcius is wearing an old computer disk platter. That is no computer disk, that is my halo — but it was a disk platter in a former life. No information is available about what kind of computer it came from or what data was stored on it. However, you can rest assured that no non-free software is readable from it today.14 -
WTF why is systemd now also pulling in tigerVNC???

A game taking place inside an operating system. Like Tron but needs to have much more solid analogies. User's body as tty process. Some representation of scheduler priority and memory allocation. Forking. Children and zombies. Init.
Some process-ownable token representing file handles.
Network ports as portals through which data may be sent by acquiring a file handle and using it.
/proc, /mem, etc are extreme stretch goals.

Van't decide whether I want to build my game engines debug and root dev tools how I thought, thinking of building the engine to almost behave like a VM but not quite, it still is compiled just like a normal game but has a built in developer terminal that actually acts like an extra operating system/BIOS that can be left to boot the games assets and everything like you would have for an end user or the startup can be interupted to initialise the terminal prior to everything being loaded...
Following the osdev Wiki tutorials to actually build the dev terminal itself but just unsure whether or not to impliment this system the way I think or not... Opinions?1 -
Okay new Rant
INSERT TRIGGER WARNING HERE
OSX still sucks I have been using the bloody darn thing for last 8 months still I found things that are obnoxiously trivial missing.
Latest incident I was trying to plug in my android phone(soft bricked) in recovery mode and I had to push a file with ADB (i save this mutherfuker for another day). So back to the original topic now I plug it in and but turns out it doesn't recognize my device now as a preliminary check I decide to check my USB cable and my DONGLE both seem to be working fine now I try rebooting back into recovery. Now after scrapping the internet for a few hours I find that this problem is caused because sometimes due to a recurrent bug in OSX the operating system sometimes fails to recognize the difference in between directories "Adam"(just an example) and "adam" which in turn can interfere with some of the flags used while checking if a device might be connected.
I mean this is fucked why the fuck can you not simply use your device as an external storage that would have made the process easier by a fucking lot.
I think the people at Apple are going the destroy a UNIX powerhouse just to make their OS more CUPCAKE friendly.
And all of this is in addition to the problems with AFS.
I just wish I had not bought mac for development5 -

I'll say it now, after Windows XP, Windows 7 is probably the best operating system I've ever had the pleasure of using.

A certain company:
1) Forbids to run its proprietary operating system on hardware that is not produced by the company itself (BTW sold extremely overpriced). Virtual machines included.
2) Makes laptops with wrong and unusable keyboard layouts.
3) Does not sell any kind of servers that can be mounted on a rack.
Why should any open source project waste resources and time to support it? They should just be left alone with their crappy software and their overpriced hardware.4 -

So I was instructed today, after lunch, to spend an hour teaching a member of my team how to SSH, store keys, basic io routines, and create CRON jobs to auth our ECR registry by my team lead.. Why am I wasting dev time teaching someone how to use an operating system? Need I add, our primary Dev workspace is a spun up using vagrant using xubuntu. I just can't comprehend how this person has been using xubuntu as their primary OS for two months and doesn't know the SSH protocol. Much less how they landed a dev job without any prior experience with a *NIX based OS.2

For the last 6 months I dived deep in the open-source world. I cried so many times. Lack of recent documentation, a lot of products having multiple ways to install, almost nothing works out of the box and requires additional tweaking.

After Windows everything seems to have doubled in speed.
C++ is freaking awesome (still feeling disgusted from the syntax though unless it's modern)

It pisses me off. When i have to use older technology or software because new technology or databases or operating system will less community support if they have that, then they'll say it's not battle tested and the best one is "its difficult to find people who know this technology" *slowclaps*

My first computer exposure was on a mainframe (CDC Cyber 180). My university in Kerala, India had a collaboration with the Indian defence organisation DRDO. The operating system was something called NOS/VE, though as I remember it could run some Unix version virtually. I had Fortran 77 programs to be developed as part of the course. (finite element methods). As I remember, the machine had built in routines for the same. Screen was a green on dark terminal conected to the thing. No windowing or graphics.
Today kids have more powerful machines at home (or in their pockets). The famous computing power law be praised. -

any other suggestions?

Microsoft ends support for Windows 7
Support for Windows 7 ended this week which means that security or software updates will no longer be provided by Microsoft.
Windows 7 will continue to run however it will be more vulnerable to viruses and malware. The best way to remain secure is to use the latest operating system available.
Microsoft have a dedicated webpage for user questions, next steps and detailed advice. 👇

I wanted to design an operating system when I was younger after giving up on the idea of being a video game designer. While researching that I learned I need to know how to program. I tried too learn solo with websites like Codecademy. I completed several tracks on the site. After getting the basics down, I took two Java programming classes. After that opportunities to write code for free kept popping up and I kept saying "yes". Fast forward a few years and I'm working as a programmer. I'm by no means good at this but I'm learning and I love my job.
I also kept trying to solve coding challenges on websites like codewars over the years. -

C) learn another core language like C/c++/assembly?27 -

Hi!
Need to get some of your opinions about computer. I have always been using IBM/Lenovo or HP with Windows as operating system, due to work needs and policies. But, this weekend I purchased a new apple MacBook Air, and I want to know what you think about my choice. It is just for personal use, so I will continue to use my hp with win10 at work (needed for the erp system I'm consulting).
I choose MacBook Air as my personal computer because I think the hardware and chassi is a bit more premium to a pretty low cost, looking on hp or Lenovo with the same class of chassi and build is at least 150% more expensive. Let me know your comment :)2 -
Probably this was asked before many times but I want your updated opinion.
1) What is the best Linux distro you used? Why?
2) Do you still use it? If not, why?
My answer:
1) Debian. Because I find it very comfortable and it run in Raspberry Pi and other small computers. It has the software that I usually use and it's very light.
2) Yes but not as my main OS because the lastest version of software that I use weren't updated yet (and probably they won't update them on a short time). I had to move to W10 as my main OS.5 -

TL;DR - I’ve done some thinking about operating systems and sticking to one
Mk
so I, like many of you, have seen far more than my fair share of “X operating system is perfect for it all, so don’t use Y operating system because it’s just awful” posts.
Over this week i’ve really done some thinking and experimenting with multiple devices and OSes and programs for various tasks. People coming from windows over to linux (like myself) tend to diss windows (rightfully so for the most part, but still). I’ve also noticed that the android vs. apple debate can get heated among users.
Listen guys,
iOS has its shortcomings obviously, UI being kinda a big one; but no one can deny that apple shoves some of the nicest hardware into their devices. Yes, this stuff is pricey as hell obviously, but the new macs come with an i9 and quite a bit of memory as well. Apple devices tend to have longer lasting batteries too - i cant count the times where i’ve just turned on my mobile hotspot, and stuck my android in my pocket to use my iphone (its a wifi-only 5s). the applications run nicely on apple hardware.
i couldnt learn even half as much programming as i do on my android though; Termux is a godsend, and im able to run and test scripts right there in the palm of my hand. can’t get that on an iphone.
Some of my favorite game developers only develop for windows; I’m dual booting for that sole reason (warframe and the epic games launcher don’t properly run through wine).
Just boil it down inside for a second; You might have come from a more “user friendly” operating system, to learn on one that is less so - wether you wanted the freedom and wiggle room for customization, or just a more developer friendly working environment (God bless conky and its devs) - so you didn’t have to be locked down into one way of seeing things. Putting a previously used OS down directly violates that thougjt process, and at that point you’re just another windows hater, or arch junkie, or whatever. I think we need to be open to appreciating the pros of every system, even if we almost never use some of them, and we should try not to put down other devs-to-be or csci/sec enthusiasts down because of that either.2 -
Am I missing something? After going through the Manjaro installation process, turning on the computer and selecting the operating system in the grub menu, it never allows me to boot successfully. I even reinstalled the os and same result. It always says something like this when booting... 😒6

The Tao of programming
1.1
Something mysterious is formed, born in the silent void. waiting alone and unmoving, it is at once still and yet in constant motion. It is the source of all programs. I do not know its name, so I will call it the Tao of Programming.
If the Tao is great, then the operating system is great.
If the operating system is great, then the compiler is great.
If the compiler is great, then the application is great.
The user is pleased, and there is harmony in the world.
The Tao of Programming flows far away and returns on the wind of morning.

Anyone with good understanding of hardware and/or an operating systems network protocols please assist me. I have questions
When using socket api I know it’s not the actual sockets sending the data but the socket api tells the network protocol to send, receive, listen, connect, etc well what I want to know is how that networking protocol works within the operating system
My second question is more an extension of the first. After the operating system knows what the socket api wants to do and wants to do it how does the transmission and receiving work on the physical layer within the hardware
Idk if what I’m asking makes sense. But if anyone also has any resources or a link that’ll help me on the subject I’d appreciate it. I haven’t found anything on the subjects myself19 -
Android 13 will Unlock Certain Device Controls even when Locked
Android 13 is the newest operating system that will be available soon. The OS comes with a range of new features, one of which is unlocking certain device controls even when the device is locked. This is a game-changer that will significantly enhance the user experience.
Introduction
The Android operating system has undergone numerous changes since its inception. With every new release, users are treated to new features that enhance the overall user experience. Android 13 is no different, and it promises to revolutionize the way we interact with our devices. One of the most exciting features of Android 13 is unlocking certain device controls even when the device is locked. In this article, we'll take a closer look at this feature and explore its implications for users.
What is Android 13?
Before we delve into the details of Android 13, let's take a moment to understand what it is. Android is an operating system designed primarily for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It was developed by Google and is currently the most widely used mobile operating system in the world. Android 13 is the latest version of this operating system, and it comes with a range of new features that will make it even more user-friendly.
Device Control Access
One of the most exciting features of Android 13 is the ability to access certain device controls even when the device is locked. This means that users will be able to control various functions of their device without having to unlock it. Some of the controls that will be accessible include the flashlight, camera, and voice assistant.
How will it work?
The process of accessing device controls when the device is locked will be straightforward. Users will only need to swipe left on the lock screen to access a new panel that will display the controls. The controls will be easy to use, and users will be able to activate or deactivate them with a single tap. This feature will make it easier for users to perform certain tasks without having to unlock their device.
Implications for Users
The ability to access certain device controls when the device is locked will have several implications for users. Firstly, it will make it easier for users to perform certain tasks quickly. For example, if you need to use the flashlight, you won't have to go through the process of unlocking your device and navigating to the flashlight app. Instead, you can simply access the flashlight control from the lock screen.
Secondly, this feature will enhance the security of the device. By limiting access to certain controls, users can ensure that their device remains secure even when it is locked. For example, the camera control will only be accessible when the device is unlocked, which will prevent unauthorized users from taking pictures or videos.

When i took CS operating system class few years ago there was discussion on layout of memory and how to retrieve things faster. There was a point where we were asked question on locality and i was first to shoot my hand and prof looked at me : i was eager to answer locality of refrences, i knew temporal locality but i forgot the other one. That is when he told me to remeber Einstein and his space time principal. Instantly i remembered spatial locality. Till this date after so many years i remeber the concept! Woohoo to all the awesome teachers!!

Anyone here who knows stuff about Xenix. Would it be possible for Microsoft or any other party to build a modern operating system with it? Just theoretically.

Windows is crap! Linux is better but does not support many important programs. And I think, a good system should be usable just fine without using the Terminal.
So would it be possible to create a 4th big system architecture (Open-Source), which supports Windows Apps & Games without being shitty and without harming their laws?13 -
Windows is not an operating system. It's a shit. A non-free shit. Fuck window$. Non-based *ux/ix system can't be an operating system. A shit system perhaps.10
