This guy at my last internship. A windows fanboy to the fucking max!
He was saying how he'd never use anything related to Linus Torvalds because he hated him for creating Linux.
Two seconds later I saw him initializing a new git repo.
I was standing there like:
*should I tell him?*
😅😆65 -
Dev1 - hey we need to run some test to ensure delivery on our emails, how should we do it?
Dev2- I dunno, just put {RANDOMSTRING}@somedomain.com and send it. Dont bother to ask @Linux about it, it is a good idea
Dev1 - sounds like a great idea! I'll send a couple of thousands, ok?
--------- TODAY ---------
Me: Hey why are we on blacklist?14 -
Yes Linus Torvalds is an asshole and the world is better because of it.
In short Linus's acid takes on code quality over developer fee fee's might be one of the things that has made the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux project such a long lasting open source success and in my opinion the risk of him falling for all this "let's be nice and non offensive" bs trend may impact negatively on code quality.
Being an asshole has it's downsides and it's not always the best response, I'll give you that, but personally I think most of us who are viewed as assholes are seen like that because we put quality over convenience, facts before feelings and dedication over mediocrity; it is not because we hate you, it's because we measure ourselves with the same stick.
It depends on one's character, but when you've been toughened up because of bullying(I don't doubt many devs have been since being a nerd has never been hip) or life in general, you learn to stop whining & pick yourself up and you expect everyone to be competitive and competent as you are and it gets frustrating to manage people who don't fulfill your expectations.
Pros: You get shit done and you do it well.
Cons: People won't like you and you don't tolerate failure (much less mediocrity).
Yes Linus is an asshole, my coach was an asshole, some of my best teacher's have been assholes, I had friends who were assholes, heck I'm an asshole!
But I thank them because they made me better than I was, just as people have thanked me for being the right amount of asshole.
A warm thank you and fuck you Linus, keep being the asshole we need.36 -
I want a TV program like "Kitchen Nightmares" but with IT companies.
And with Linus Torvalds in place of Gordon Ramsey12 -

26 years ago Linus Torvalds sent out this message to the comp.os.minx newsgroup.
Hello everybody out there using minix -
I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and
professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing
since april, and is starting to get ready. I’d like any feedback on
things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons)
among other things).
I’ve currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work.
This implies that I’ll get something practical within a few months, and
I’d like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions
are welcome, but I won’t promise I’ll implement them :-)
- Linus
PS. Yes — it’s free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs.
It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never
will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that’s all I have :-(.
Fast forward to today and Linux has more than 12 000 contributors from over 1300 companies that contribute to the Linux kernel.
The Linux Foundation released a fairly detailed progress report, including an infographic which I was tempted to include here but you can view it in it’s original context here.
While you’re over there, remember you can be a sponsor of the Linux Foundation too.
Happy Birthday Linux and a giant thanks to not only Linus but every single one of the contributors that have taken part of it over the years.5 -
I was just scrolling down a Facebook feed and a part of a picture with Linus Torvalds appeared.
- Hell no! Not again, 2016, just fuck off already!!
And then... "Happy birthday!"
My heart skipped a beat...6 -
Me to wordpress "developer"
- No, you are not a developer, you just drag and drop shit in visual composer
That felt good3 -
People are complaining about how to exit vi/vim.
They have not FUCKING TRIED EXIT TELNET ON A SWEDISH KEYBOARD12 -
Don't really have one but I've git to say that I find it rather cool that Linus Torvalds thought "fuck it, we need an open Unix alternative" and that a very big potion of the world runs on the kernel he wrote for a big part, now.6

**Looking for a job**
Sees a posting saying 20+ years Linux experience....The hell, why don't you just get Linus to do that job... -
One of the biggest e-commerce site's here in Sweden like to generate hundreds of thousands of sessionfiles every day.
That slows down their website alot, and the poor server is struggling hard.
They asked me if I could do something about it. So I mounted the catalogue with sessionfiles on a tmpfs volume. And suddenly the site is much faster. I guess storing sessionfiles directly into RAM solved it :P
And yes, they are aware that a restart of the server removes the files.8 -
I accidently spammed my own server from my other server, which caused fail2ban to go bananas.
Fail2ban sent ALOT of emails to my hostingproviders abuse department and they due to the amount of emails they got suspended my server.
I can't blame them :)8 -
Professor refers to Linus Torvalds as the most arrogant developer. Says no one uses Git and thinks it has no advantages over SVN. Forces us to use SVN. :'(21

Linus Torvalds: “Real men don’t use backups, they post their stuff on a public ftp server and let the rest of the world make copies.”7

Git: A version control system expressly designed to make you feel less intelligent than you are thought you were.8
-
Preface: This client, let's call him dickhead, is running a successful brick-and-mortar based business in one of the top cities of the world. He is highly qualified in a non-IT field.
Rant: This son of a shitbag things he knows everything because he can search on Google, has a degree, owns an expensive business, and of course has money. Does not listen to my suggestions on which framework to use, how to integrate stuff, etc. because he thinks he is the fucking father of Linus Torvalds, and Linus built Linux kernel out of his super-intelligent sperm.
But that titbag can't understand the simple fact that he has spent the last 2 fucking years building stupid websites which he thought from his brain located alongside his balls. None of those websites are in the condition to launch, forget making a difference. Primary reason being using wrong frameworks for wrong purpose, but his half-assed brain can't understand this.6 -
So, none other than the father of our beloved Linux kernel - Linus Torvalds, just totally put an antivax guy down in the public kernel mailing list.
I think I love Linus even more now. He may not be a people person, but he sure does know how to totally rip people into shreds lol.

Update on my job interviews:
I had four so far.
Got rejected from all of them.

I am applying as a junior.
What do they expect? Fucking Linus Torvalds or geohot?11 -
"I want my API to return insults as error messages if they forget shit"

Last year, a customer bought a very expensive Symantec certificate for their website (that is not hosted by us).
They got the certificate and everything seemed nice. We got paid and all everything.
And yesterday, the customer called and said that their certificate has stopped working. I thought "that is strange" so I visited their site and what I saw was horrible.
The site has used and still used a Let's Encrypt certificate. The webdevs they have had not bothered to install the very expensive Symantec certificate for $1500...13 -
I think Linus Torvalds would be up there in the top 5 ranters list if he had a devrant.
It’s not quite @AlexDeLarge creativity but some of his swears are certainly pretty full of imagery.9 -
After almost two years working as a Linux Sysadmin, I have found out that every developer needs a Sysadmin.17

Saturday plan: serious switch to Linux.
1. Installs Fedora, lookin nice.
2. Let's update it, fails to boot.
3. Nouveau driver fails, lets install proprietary one.
4. dnf install dependencies, repo returns 503
5. Be stuck on a 640x480 bash.
6. Boot windows, start overwatch.15 -
I'm talking with this teenager that believes himself an engineer because he built a PC.
He is vehement in telling me that Linux came out in 2007 and it was Valve who developed it for Steam!
They he Googled it to prove me wrong and then... never spoke to me again 😂
I'm an Arch user dude! That's like, just one level under Linus Torvalds!13 -
This day is the worst ever, I can't do anything. I feel useless and Im much less productive than I use to be.
I hate it when I forget me headphones at home6 -
Worst advice?
That must have been that time my boss asked me how to restart rsyslog (Windowsguy and I was on vacation)

Linus torvalds announcing his humble new (hobby) OS to minix newsgrp on this day 25yr ago .. Rest, my folks, is history!
Happy Birthday Linux -
If I could talk to Linus, I would ask him to change sudo for simon. And I'm convinced he would accept immediately.12

Coming home for xmas: fixing the router, configuring new smartphones, doin backups and listen to your mum complaing bout her "linus" system 👌🏻😂3

It's my birthday today, I was born a year after Linus set out to create Linux.
As a dev, I couldn't ask for a better day to celebrate. Thanks Linus!2 -
Being a sysadmin, I never write any code.
But I do want to learn that.
What is the easiest language to learn?
(I am lazy)53 -
First they came for the atheists, and I didn't speak out - because I'm not an atheist
Then they came for the university teachers, and I didn't speak out - because I don't like universities
Then they came for the gamers, and I didn't speak out - because I don't play videogames
Then they came for Open Source and I didn't speak out - because "anyone can fork it"
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me
I know I butchered the poem and I'm not comparing our social situation to the Holocaust (obviously), but I think it kind of illustrates that silence and gradually giving up ideals like justice and meritocracy can end up badly.
I also encourage you to read the actual poem it's pretty nice and food for thought.5 -
Linus won't call out dipshitprogrammers? That's not good. There are a lot of dipsshit programmers out there. :/
-
One day Linus Torvalds will make a statement about git like: "Why is everybody using this? It was just a joke!"2
-
I am running a small - but growing - ceph-cluster at work. Since it is fun and our storage demand is growing each day.
Today, it was time to bring another node online and add another 12TB to the cluster.
Installation of the OS went fine, network settings fine, drives looks fine.
Now, time to add it into the cluster.... BAM
Every Dell machine in the Cluster - Dead.
The two HP-machines is online and running. But the Dell-machines just died.
WAT!?19 -
I raise my middle finger:
- to the past developers of this 4 year old piece of garbage project that we are maintaining, who thought that using StringBuffers to construct html documents as a Http response as a good idea
- to the bosses and managers, who keeps on giving unreasonable deadlines yet passes accountability to others.
I gave you all a Linus Torvalds style fuck you!!
That is it, I decided to resign -
So
I wrote a song
About devRant
Don't judge me
To the tune of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"
dfox and trogus
Had a very good idea
They worked on it
And out popped devRant
Then one foggy Friday night
They published it
It was an instant hit
Devs everywhere rejoyced
Now the devs love them
As they type out their rants
dfox and trogus
You'll go down in dev history!
(Like Linus Torvalds!)7 -
Wouldn't it be amazing if Linus Torvalds just say "fuck it, fuck this controversy, fuck the CoC and all the self righteous dumbass people infecting my community!"
And just forks Linux to start a new OS? Would you support him? I bet he would have huge independent support, hell I'm poor and even I'd donate.5 -
I’m now running Fedora Workstation as the primary OS on my laptop simply because Linus Torvalds does... I mean if it’s good enough for the creator of Linux, it’s good enough for me. 😅
I really need to stop fucking switching distros...30 -
Alright, so the "big e-commerce" site have ranted about a few times decided to move their site to google, because the developers blame our server to be the issue.
Well, I wish I had a couple of beer to drink while I am enjoying the downtime, servercrashes, and timeout on the site now. I hope the devs eat their own shit, because they are. -
Sad to abort a nice Minecraft session with fellow devranters in order to drive to work... Hopefully I am back before 4AM.18
-
Time to move my mailserver!
I am having an inner struggle about what distro/OS to use:
Debian
CentOS
Ubuntu
FreeBSD
OpenBSD
What should I use? Why?41 -
Fu*king Windows!!!
Integrating Linux kernel into their new build.
Microsoft Edge insiders experimenting with Chromium engine.
Microsoft has now bowed down to the open source community...

All hail Linux!!!
All hail Open Source!!!

I damn love devs. The humor, the devs easter eggs...
Have you ever wondered what 'git' stands for?
try 'man git' ;)4 -
Not kidding. I just woke up from a dream where Linus Torvalds invited us to his house. We were talking about early days of git and his views on Cloud bleed. I don't want to wake up 😭😭😭

Im not dead yet (dunno about next week), for those that knew me here when I was around, but I really wanted to come to a place I know I could get some comments about it, but what the whole IT/Tech world right now?

How Linus Torvalds laughs ?:
Uploads ha.wav to an ftp server and lets the rest of the world mirror it 😃😃 -
I'm far from being a Linux fanboy, but Linus Torvalds is such a great guy to listen to while coding. I like how down to earth and straightforward he is. The tech world needs more people like him.5

"There are people who care about the user interface (UI); I can’t do UI to save my life. I mean if I was stranded on an island and the only way to get off that island was to make a pretty UI, I’d die there." -- Linus Torvalds
That is my life in summary, I can't do UI. I love doing backend projects, even when I use bootstrap, I come up with the ugliest looking UI ever. I think developers should be comfortable with whatever they enjoy doing and not forced to do things they are not very good at. (Hello PMs) *side eye*8 -
I have not gotten a single Christmas call/card this year. Feels good :)
I dont like the hype around Christmas.3 -
I just learned that linux shouldn't be called linux but GNU (or GNU/Linux)
I am a student and currently learning programming but also I looked into history and saw this interesting fact.
Basically, there was a guy who wanted to make operating system similar to unix but free to use and distribute. He called it GNU. After few years, it was getting finished but it was missing few parts. One of those parts was kernel. So people glued together this low level kernel called Linux, mid level GNU and some other stuff on top of it. It was first known as GNU/Linux and slowly GNU was kicked out of the name even though 'Linux' - the whole OS constisted more of GNU than Linux kernel.
Doesn't this seem like injustice? Am I wrong somewhere?23 -
Linus Torvalds: 'I'll never be cuddly but I can be more polite' (BBC)
https://bbc.com/news/...
I could easily point you to various tweet storms by people who criticise my 'white cis male' behaviour, while at the same time cursing more than I ever do.
I'm trying to get rid of my outbursts, and be more polite about things, but technically wrong is still technically wrong, and I won't start accepting bad code just to make people feel better about themselves.9 -
Other than being an a**hole, Linus. Guy changed computing as we know it with a little pet project59

Me talking to a friend
Me: Come on, you should use git, it was even created by Linus
Friend: Who’s Linus?
Me: *Wanting to be the one found by Logan Paul*7 -
Hands Down it's Linus Torvalds.
He is cocky, arrogant, moody and always speaks out his opinion which is most of the times should be censored.
Favorite Moment: Fuck Nvidia!!!!2 -
I know this is SO original, but I like Linus Torvalds best. I love that he created Linux originally just as his own little project, and now..I'm sure you all know how big it is.
He also created git, basically because he was tired of the version control systems that were already out there. Just "oh this is shit, I'm gonna write my own", and if I remember correctly, within a few weeks he had the first functional version of git.
Plus the man says that he names all his projects after himself, I think that's pretty damn funny. -
I saw a video on YouTube, iJustine goes on a Linus Tech Tips studio tour in Canada. Its a huge studio and he has like 50 people working for him. He has 2 script writers. He has created a fake kitchen and some kind of a garden to shoot videos inside of the studio. Its amazing how people make careers out of YouTube.8
-
Back to work after vacation.
And WTF do my collegues ignore the hardware failures and save that shit for me? -
Being 25 and just now getting employable dev etc skills is really quite daunting when you learn of the old geniuses like Bill Joy, Linus, Wozniak and then hear daily stories of 16 year olds doing amazing things.
Inexperience in a field where everyone demands experience is scary. Still excited to see where I Can l can get though.11 -
Time for a REAL fucking rant.
io_uring manpages say you can set the CAP_SYS_NICE capability to allow SQPOLL to work. You can't, you still get an operation not permitted errno result.
Why? I checked, it says 5.10 mainline is required. Pretty sure I just manually downloaded and installed the Deb's myself. uname reports that I am at 5.10. So what gives?
Maintainer submitted a patch because they fucked up and made the *actual* capability check look for what's basically root permissions (CAP_SYS_ADMIN... c'mon...) and is now trying to rectify a glaring security shortcoming.
Patch hasn't been accepted or even addressed yet but they already updated the manpages with the estimated mainline kernel release as if it had made it into the release candidate. Manpages have made it into latest debs but the actual change has not.
Where the fuck is the Linus Torvalds that would ream the fuck out of shitty developers doing shitty things? The political correctness climate has discouraged such criticism now and the result... this. This fucking mess, where people are allowed to cut corners and get away with it because it would hurt their feelings when faced with pressure.
I'm not just guessing either. The maintainer has already said some of the "tone" of criticisms hurt his feelings. Yes, sorry, but when you claim 90% speedup over a typical epoll application using your new magical set of syscalls, and nobody can even get 1-2% speedup on a similar machine, people are going to be fucking skeptical. Then when you lower it to 60% because you originally omitted a bunch of SECURITY RELATED AND CORRECTNESS CHECKING CODE, we're going to call you the fuck out for fudging numbers.
Trying to maintain the equivalent of academic integrity within the computer science field is an exercise of insanity. You'd be fired and shunned from publishing in journals if you pulled that shit in ANY OTHER FUCKING FIELD, but because the CS scene is all about jerking each other off at every corner because the mean people keep saying mean things on Twitter and it hurts your feelings therefore we're all allowed to contribute subpar work and be protected from criticisms when others realize it's subpar.
These aren't mistakes anymore, it's clear you're just trying to farm clout at Facebook - maybe even FOR Facebook.
Fuck you. Do it right, the first time. Sick of shitty code being OK all of a sudden.2 -
Daily fortune;
You're growing out of some of your problems, but there are others that
you're growing into.2 -
I know I'm late to the party with GPU passthrough, but holy crap is it great! I first tried to set it up with an old GeForce 1050 ti, but damned if nvidia isn't completely worthy of that middle finger Linus gave them. I switched to an older Radeon(rx570) and it worked PERFECTLY. I have a fully accelerated windows desktop running as a VM now that I can connect to via parsec.
Big fan.5 -
Linus Torvalds on C++
“C++ leads to really really bad design choices. You invariably start using
the nice library features of the language like STL and Boost and other total and utter crap, that may help you program, but causes:
- infinite amounts of pain when they don't work (and anybody who tells me
that STL and especially Boost are stable and portable is just so full of BS that it's not even funny)
- inefficient abstracted programming models where two years down the road you notice that some abstraction wasn't very efficient, but now all your code depends on all the nice object models around it, and you cannot fix it without rewriting your app.”

Looks like Linux is going the way of Python.

Linus Torvalds, while writing about the future of Linux in his autobiography 'Just For Fun', said Linux will be used in cell phones in near future. He wrote this in 2000. After 16 years, we see Android (based on Linux Kernel) in over a billion cell phones! What a visionary! Makes me wonder!3

Me as a sysadmin, and the devs approach with this:
hey "Linux", they network is stupid, the firewall is blocking the trafic from server1 to server2, pls fix.
The servers are on the same subnet with no firewall, so I log in to the servers and find out that their programs is not running.
This is something I deal with every day2 -
When I applied to my current job I was imedialety called to an interview. I was greeted by my soon-to-be coworkers and we entered the room where the interview was going to be held.

Not really in work as a job, these people inspired me rather in lifestyle and thinking: (these are not quotes!!)
Richard Stallman - you can't be sure the program isn't harmful unless you see and understand the code.
Linus Torvalds - doesn't matter if you like the person or not, let the code speak for him/her.
Raymond Hettinger - there are both stupid and smart people. It doesn't matter. What matters is asking the right questions and providing clean and explaining answers. -

So LTT is now more or less officially Linus Trash Tips. Nothing new, but the level of ineptitude and denial is remarkable. He should have stayed at pure entertainment videos with goofing around.

Hello! My name is opalqnka and I am a Windows user.
I followed the 12-step program and now I am a step away to being certified LPIC Linux Engineer.
As step 12 preaches, here I humbly share the Program:
1. We admitted we were powerless over Windows - that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Linus as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to Linus, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. We’re entirely ready to have Linus remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through bash scripting and kernel troubleshooting to improve our conscious contact with Linus as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to Windows users and to practice these principles in all our affairs.4 -
Without Unix, there would have been no Minix (Tanenbaum et al.) orGNU (Richard Stallman et al.).Without Minix, there would be no inspiration to write Linux. Remember that Linus started his “project” because he didn’t like many of the design decisions Tanenbaum has taken in Minix, including the microkernel. In fact, Linus has tried to submit some changes to the professor and the latter rejected them. So the young chap decided to write his own kernel using his design.Without GNU, there would be no open source tools that Linus himself used to write, compile, test and distribute his project, to become a few years later a global phenomenon. Also, the fact that GNU was already an established Unix clone (minus an operating kernel) at that time helped Linus to focus on the missing part, the kernel. Otherwise, he would not have known where to start. And finally, Unix was the template all of the above (and more) were trying to imitate. Without it, there would have been nothing to clone from.1

Rant!
When senior dev's or successful startup founders ask me to shift from Open-sourcing my Projects and start making revenue, it gets me very awkward and uncomfortable with myself.
Their argument is Opensource won't feed you unless you're linus torvald, I understand their point however it's irritating that public good isn't a mode of income.
Watching Jobs and Social Networks gets me similarly worked up.People disregarding companions of their journey as they choose money over friendship.
It sure is a cruel world. I'm not sure if i ever will be compatible with it. -

If ever there was something like dark ages, then we are living it: which programmer still knows what his statement does through the whole software stack down to the CPU (and could also account for what a modern CPU does with all its cores, caches, pipelines and -1, -2, -3 rings). Piled higher and deeper. I know nothing. So it's like being a cargo cult sorcerer, conjuring copy&pasted spells from SO to invoke Bjarne's, Linus' or whomevers forlorn spirit, so this shit won't break.2

In response to the fuss about the Linux kernel team contemplating a new Code of Conduct and revelations that Linus Torvald's daughter has sighed a cancerous "Post-Meritocracy Manifesto", I decided to help those who are pressured to provide a Code of Conduct for their service, project or conference but would like a sane one which doesn't involving bending over with a big red BULLSEYE around your arsehole.

To all who fancy MS being a platinum member of Linux Foundation and all that "love" which MS so loudly screams around. MS and Canonical are working together. Unity was only the beginning.
You do realise if Linus, the owner or Linux's GPL ( https://kernel.org/pub/linux/... ) dies it might lead to catastrophe, right? An owner of a license can make exceptions in license.

*YOU* are full of bullshit.
C++ is a horrible language. It’s made more horrible by the fact that a lot of substandard programmers use it, to the point where it’s much much easier to generate total and utter crap with it…
So I’m sorry, but for something like git, where efficiency was a primary objective, the “advantages” of C++ are just a huge mistake. The fact that we also piss off people who cannot see that is just a big additional advantage.8 -
This description, by Linus Torvalds, on how to revert a faulty merge reminded me why git is the wrong choice for many projects:
