Me: Why, I don't believe in blockchain on the long run.
Mom: You should start believing in blockchain and you should start using it for all your stuff.

Mom: Blockchain is the future, because the media said so.

Me: it is not related to our work by anything!!! What we will visualize? A success of the transition? The amount of it? A visualization of the nodes?
Boss: (shouting) there are a lot of opportunities using the BlockChain in our days, and it is critical to our business...
Me: boss, there many opportunities using the ******* BlockChain, and I am leaving this company by the end of the month... find a ******* BlockChain developer to visualize the ******* process...

CHILD: But how can Santa deliver toys to every little boy and girl on his list in one night?

Let's settle this:
Blockchain is just a dumb database, the feature that makes it amazing is trust-less ness.
Its not meant to make a decentralised uber or a Tic-tac-toe game.

I'm working in a blockchain company for $180 as a junior programmer and there is a mid-senior guy who get ~8 times more than me. So we got a project to make a backend API with its tests. When I was partly completed my part of the project I asked that "mid-senior" to share his code with me. Nothing was done, and he asked me to push my changes to git so he could start to do something (view at my code and start copying). BUT. He couldn't even pull from git. He couldn't use that fucking Visual studio's team explorer and even the solution explorer. Ok, he was working with VS for the first time, but I did too. I cloned the repo gave him the environment to start "working" and get back to my work. After that nothing changed, he was writing each one-lined if block for half hour and the code was very dirty. Finally I've got his laptop and started to writing his part by teaching him all the programming. You may say I'm mad. I really do, I think that I did all project. This is sad... How can people get this much by being this far from the programming? We need really high quality programmers.3

Recenty I have studied a lot about Bitcoin and Blockchain. The technology behind these things is amazing. And people are going mad over it. But, are we really going to the right direction? I have doubts.
Bitcoin was targeted to be a decentralized system. But in the present scenario, if BTC.com, AntPool and ViaBtc somehow merge, they will own more than 51% of the total computational power of the Bitcoin network. And if that happens, they will have full control over the whole network and will be able to replace the whole Bitcoin Blockchain with their forged entries if they want. By the way, btc.com is China based and owns 29.6% of the total computational power of the Bitcoin mining network. Forget about merging, if btc.com grows independently, who can assure that they would never cross the 51% threshold? Same problem exists with other Blockchain systems too. Are these systems really decentralized as they advertise? I really doubt now.8 -

I'm working on this project; it's for a large organization that desires to use blockchain simply "because it the feature" and not for any actual use-case; anyway, after a week or so we had a team meeting and my supervisor asks what have we accomplished so far, I was dumb enough to state that it went fabulous but I can't see how the use of blockchain is beneficial to the project, his response was "OK, I'll let you know what more features to implement to make sure you use blockchain well". And I'm just looking at my co-workers like "plz don't hate me".6

Recently at my work everyone got all hyped about blockchain. I've spent years studying it and especially crypto so I like to think I know a lot about it. Now every time some feature is discussed (like tracking video views) someone non tech shouts out "Oh we can use a blockchain!" And I have to spend half an hour convincing them why it's a bad idea in this particular case. Like we don't need to share that data, we don't need to ensure integrity without trust etc. I mean a blockchain is a great piece of tech but please stop trying to apply it everywhere...
It's like people think that the blockchain features at its most simplified level don't work anywhere else. E.g. as if stuff you put into MySQL suddenly changes because data integrity is not a 'feature' in that sense...2 -
I work for a consulting company, my boss comes into the room full of engineers trying to work on Adwords campaign and asks us what words to use. "Should I use blockchain, I heart that's popular. I just saw Kickstarter's blog post about moving over to the Blockchain. They're doing it because, uh, protocols, or something. No joke, here's a direct quote from their post:
"You may have heard of HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) which helps you browse the web, or SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) which helps you send email. Protocols like these make up the unseen infrastructure of the internet. Imagine that, but for crowdfunding creative projects."
What the fuck does that even mean? The rest of the blog post is more of the same. They packed it full of every crypto buzzword they could find while also not actually providing any useful information.

I work as a freelancer and one time I had a client that needed some work done on a crypto website. I was so hyped up because the money was good so I jumped on it. Fast forward 2 weeks later I still couldn’t figure what the shit I was doing as the client kept asking for update.
Yes, I have experience with blockchain but my skill on Javascript just couldn’t help. I did google and also ask questions on S.O. but it wasn’t enough to get me on track.
At the end, I reached out to the client and apologized for not being able to meet up with their request and then recommended someone else.
So I’d say “I lost faith” on my skill as a Javascript dev at that moment for not being able to use some blockchain APIs effectively and also look forward to improving my catalog.2 -
I don't understand the hype among the non technical people about Blockchain! Why the fuck they want to implement everything in Blockchain? Don't they know that it is not for every single application and mostly used for some trustless applications?

In the Global Blockchain Congress currently taking place in Kolkata, India, 'IT' officials from PWC India and IBM India start their speaks right after a popular cryptography professor from Belgium and a Blockchain entrepreneur from Brazil.

Im thinking of writing a book on blockchain and possibly partnering with O'Reilly to get something solid done. It would be an in-depth book about the inner workings of blockchain technology, without assuming any knowledge of programming (but would cover every topid thoroughly).
Who here would be interested in reading something like that?2 -
When your 'business-minded' friend tells you that you'll never be able to understand and see the future and the power of [buzzword] because you only know how to code...

I still don't understand blockchain.
I've read a lot of articles about blockchain and cryptocurrency and still don't understand it completely. the part I'm missing is the storage part (which is the main thing I guess). is the data stored in pieces in every device, or how does this go? what if someone unplugs their device, what happens to the info of my wallet that was stored on that device?11 -
I'm between Node js and (yes) blockchain. Node has amazing possibilities, and well distributed could end with the crappy servers era. Even my crappy server could fall to node in some weeks.

my sister asked me
"hey do u know how to use (develop in) blockchain?"
what do i even respond to this...5 -
everyone glorifies ethereum and its smart contracts, but the actual build tools and overall development environment around it sucks balls.
when testing a contract locally with truffle develop and metamask, you have to reinstall metamask after every transaction because it gets out of sync with your local chain... people are seriously okay with working with this shit?3 -
Where to begin learning about blockchain? (Google searches return way too much information.)
This has been in the back of my head for years now. And with all the attention that crypto currency has been getting lately, reminded me to look into this again.
Note: I don't actually care for cryto currencies, I'm just really curious about blockchain technology.4 -
Okay, so, my company does some stuff around blockchain. I had source for smart contract prepared before and it was on 'todo' queue. So, time for it, time to deploy on Kovan, time to test it on actual chain. Riiiight? Okay compiled no problem, deployed, no problem, i plug into several gui's ABI provided by compiler, and... Well..
I still do not understand why each and every gui prompted me to send view transactions (external view), instead of, well, eval them locally, i checked the ABI manually, it is correct, i stripped it down, it is correct, all up to spec.
I try older version of offline MEW, to have older web3.js with no success that thing works properly.
Every
Single
Web3.js based client
Behaved
Differently
And none behaved correctly.
I would, like, understand, if I didnt use official compiler, but official compiler should for F sakes be compatible with official client.
Today this stole 6 hours of my life, I didnt manage to solve it, and I am legitmitely pissed.
Im getting close to re-implement segment of web3JS to be able to do the tests I need to do.
Its not like I havent done it before.... -

I've been reading about quantum computing in finance and other applications (fascinating read, althought really dense), but one question now won't stop bugging me.
Context:
1) Blockchain applications are based on NP-Hard asymmetric cryptographic problems, and how hard it is to solve such problems in a really short time.
2) So called "Web3.0" is based mostly on Blockchain applications, but would still need significant advances in order to be practical.
3) Affordable and practical cloud-based quantum computing is not so far in the future, and could be used to crack most NP-Hard problems in short (polynomial) time.
Thus, my question: Is Web3.0 obsolete before it even begun?
I mean, if quantum computing takes on fast enough, it could snuff out Blockchain applications by giving those a shelf life so short it wouldn't be worth to delevolp for it. It would be like announcing the iPhone 14 and the 15 on the same breath, saying the 15 is only a quarter away - why would anyone bother with the born-obsolete tech?5 -
Has anyone read any research papers looking into the application of differential cryptanalysis to blockchains and mining, and if so, could you point me in the right direction?
I'm bored and looking for something interesting to read on my day off. More importantly I'm ignorant enough of the subject to entertain the possibility that there might be some possible (if not plausible) cross-pollination of ideas between the two domains. -
In todays lecture my professor told us that our city is planning to do its own cryptocurrency. Why does everyone do stuff just because it's a hype?1

I don’t understand blockchain enthusiasts. I even spent some time studying the concept and application examples. Most of the time they use private networks removing the concept of distribution, many other times regular database and signature techniques would be cheaper and more practical and anyway these ready made solutions are actually black boxes for the final users because messing around with blockchain would require too much skills… But if you have to trust these black boxes, you could actually just trust any centralized service… I really can’t understand…10

Online Multiplayer Mafia party game built on Ethereum.
Project Type: Existing open source project
Description: I found that most of the blockchain game projects in this space are using traditional web2 technology for hosting gameplay. So, we decided to create a game that utilizes web3 technologies as much as possible for our project and create services like real-time chat, game rooms, player profiles that can be used by other games. These services are very common among modern online multiplayer games and we need a reliable and scalable alternative that uses a web3 tech stack. So, we have decided to create a game that incorporates all these features.
Blockchain smart contracts development is complete. I need help in backend and frontend development. You don't need to have any experience in Blockchain.
Tech Stack: Express.js + React.js + IPFS + Solidity

Why isn't Monero popular than Bitcoin, its practically the BEST crypto currency ever build, Satoshi Nakamoto did a great job, but come on!
Monero is factually EPIC!2 -
This year, I want to implement a blockchain enabled commodities exchange using Arcblock.io’s Forge framework. I hope to Launch by the 3rd quarter of the year.6

!Rant.
After reading many articles and watching YouTube videos on Blockchain, how it works, the new framework etc etc. It's evident that blockchain can be used to eliminate many problem faced in different industries and so on. What I cannot seem to find is a perfect application of solution to these problems in real life. I know it's too early to speculate, but thinking of all the internal(or under the table money) transactions happening, what is the possibility of mass adoption of blockchain given these conditions.3 -
It's about time we get a new internet (like in silicon valley TV show). Fully decentralised wherever possible. The fact that you need to spend ether for every write to the Ethereum Blockchain is not gonna help.

"my greatest fear in life is my best not being good enough."
Currently, I am building my second business around blockchain.
I am stacking on using the popularity of cryptocurrency and it's novelty to push the product universal.
My limitation (what I think):
1. My environment - unfortunately I live in a third world country
2. Naivety: I have never scaled a business, failed in my first attempt(this is my second).
3. Lack of fund: my budget is pretty low, and no I dont have a family support to raise any for marekting and promoting the business, so I am let with option of scaling it organically ( what "organically" means is spamming social media, forum's comments section to grow customers
4. Really the only option present: most folks here wont know what it means to be in a state of "survival", failing will cause you suffering.
5. Poor network: My friends, or the people around dont understand, cant comprehen what this means.
Cons:
1. I get to know what it means to carry your idea to the world again, this I hope will improve my knowledge base on business and make me less naive.
2. Portfolio boost: "wow!" that should be people's reaction when I tell them about the project.
3. If I succed, I hope the incentive will take me out of this shit hole.
4. I really want to get out of this shit hole - this should work!2 -
Hello guys, I've got a short question because I need a little guidance. I need to write a thesis to obtain my bachelors degree and I thought about writing the blockchain. Because the topic needs to be more specific I thought about writing the blockchain and it's use in the financial market. Apparently my professor wants an even more specific topic for the thesis. Have you guys got any clues ? Ideas for me ... I would appreciate that a lot :)12

Hello everyone!
Since this is such a cool community with so many app devs, I though it would be cool to share with you all a project the company I work with its currently developing.
The name is appcoins, and it's a blockchain project that aims to solve 3 big problems that devs, users, Appstores and oems face everyday in the current apps ecosystem:
- the advertising: create a trustworthy advertise system for your apps, where you can actually invest money that will be spent on users that will use your apps; currently is a system where everyone is trying to fool everyone.
- Malware and Adware detection: create a system powered by the community to rank dev's apps, using a reputation system, and dispute by bidding. currently it's an unscalable system, with many detection flaws.
- In app billing (aka IAB): offer a new and easy way for users to buy cool things in your app, even if they don't have access to a credit card or other payment methods. Users will be rewarded by trying out your cool apps. Also opens the door for payments with crypto currencies in AppStores.
This is just a quick overall idea of the all project. If you're interested, checkout the website https://appcoins.io/
If you've any question or suggestion, let me know and I'll try to answer as best as I can, or redirect to my devRant coworkers.
Any feedback you may have, feel free to share it! This system is designed for us all devs, so your input is really appreciated.
Thank you all, and sorry for the long post. -
What do you think about blockchain ?, do you think that this technology will change our world for better one or not?
Anyone of you started a project using blockchain technology?2 -
I have participated in a hackathon this weekend and one of the theme of hackathon was blockchain and being a blockchain dev i have created a DApps which follows token standard and other security standard but our UI was kind of basic cause we didn't have any designer in our team but one participated team's UI was far better than us but has serious flaws in the smart contract and guess what they are the one being selected and that's not it there wasn't a single judge who has basic knowledge of blockchain.I was using DApp term very often while presenting our idea and one of a judge literally asked us what is dapp? I mean WTF? Now i am regretting why did i participated in this shitty hackathon? On top of all that they juat give a single sticker for whole team. Wtf we are supposed to do? Cut it ? If you are a blockchain dev don't forget to see this beautiful function i found in the token contract of the selected team from the github.1

Blockchain based on SHA256 is now stuck at a certain block due to high mining difficulty, it appears that a miner, mined few blocks at 15 TH/s then stopped, my question how to resolve this issue and is there any setting to adjust (chainparams.cpp) in case this happened if no block is mined in a certain amount of time.2

I have a doubt regarding blockchain. I understand how it works, but couldnot make use of it.
I am currently working on a platform which let client to assign task to their employee
Now I am planning to make use of blockchain on existing platform, to somehow set up a mechanism to authenticate that employee had completed the task, as a certification to the employee. I just cannot figure out how
I thought of an implementation, ( if its possible ) where client will trigger the smart contract with some employee-specific data, and the smart contract will generate a custom token, which will then be sent to the employee's account. This token will be non transferable1 -
I am thinking of doing a government system that runs on blockchain
Any thoughts on a platform i could use and documentation
Thoughts?5 -
Totally done with all the blockchain hype. Plz when I need a distributed secure ledger over time functionality I will be the first to consider bc. But until then just stfu1

Take this how you will:
"The more experienced a respondent is, the more likely they are to say blockchain technology is an irresponsible use of resources."

I am facing some problem on my new project. This is how I expect my project to work.
1. I am working on an Android application that uses Twitter sentiment analysis and gives out predictive result.
2. I want to keep the backend that is the python file/NLTK script on server/cloud/anywhere.
3. The Android App take the input and pass it to server.
4. In backend the tweets regarding the input are processed and after that a result is generated. The result is passed to Android App(client).
5. The app displays the result.
The problem is I don't know how to create the server(All I have is .py file). Secondly I don't know how to create request/response between the app and the server( client with .py) like how to create communication between them.
I have googled the query but am unable to come up with any reasonable solution. Any suggestions are welcome.1 -
Not entirely sure why I'm not excited about blockchain.
And yet, I see job postings related to it everywhere.
What's so special about it?3 -
Blockchain .. now that I have enrolled for a blockchain developer bootcamp costing to me a fortune, its clear to me how hyped can normal data structures get.
Its like iphone of the world of technologies.
And seriously people are doing MS in blockchain technology... I mean its a clear example of how the education fraud rings can capitalize even on a shitty tech just to suck out the wallets... Damn1 -
Who has experience with Blockchain - Smart Contracts - Solidity language?
Would love to share resources if anyone is interested.2 -
Recently I’ve been super interested in learning more about blockchain and ethereum.
Anybody got any good beginner resources or projects? I like doing projects w new technologies bc I learn a lot better by doing. Thanks! -
*learns solidity/smart-contract dev and is excited to start a blockchain revolution and spark new pathways to financial freedom*
realizes none of my friends even know what blockchain is, and don't care. feelsbadman 😢2 -
I'm a computer science student and I'm looking to start learning blockchain. I think its applications have a lot of uses and that it has potential in the future. Can you guys tell me some resources which would help me start out with it?10
-
Have anyone used machine learning in real world use cases? (would be nice if you can describe the case in a few words)
I'm reading about the topic and do some testing stuff but at the moment my feeling is that ml is like blockchain. It solves a specific type of problem and for some reason everyone wants to have this problem.7 -
Short question, is a blockchain without smart contracts worthless?
What does it bring you if you've got one, besides a use like bitcoin ?1 -
Whilst procrastinating via semi-helpful browsing,(random blockchain news/info) I come across a new crypto that's really pushing for dev (advertising dev grants etc).
I click "why develop on *whatever*".
This is the start of the page it lead to:
"The Internet began with Web1, a read-only content delivery network. Users could only consume what was offered by site owners, which significantly limited their interaction with the web content."
I blink slowly a few times, figuratively scratch my head and leave.
Am I just too harsh on things like this? I mean, I get that internet history and knowing wtf web3 means is important and all...
Is it too high of a bar to expect a link, specifically trying to entice competent devs who are directly looking into a new web3/blockchain tech to dev with/on, lead to a page that starts with somewhat relative, to the originating link's stated topic, information?
Don't get me wrong, I definitely understand the frequent necessity to be pedantic... but starting with multiple paragraphs of internet history when the sole objective of the link is to inform/entice, specifically, competent devs, who are explicitly looking to leverage blockchain tech... just seems ridiculous.
Despite not actually super interested in changing or adding new blockchain tech to dev with in the near future (not dissatisfied with our relatively established groundwork/current approach), I was actually starting to consider branching out a bit to include initial functionality and/or tools/integrations with this protocol i wasnt aware of (not even just for grant $)... but if their idea of onboarding devs to build on their tech starts with an extremely pedantic intro as to Web1-3 basics... they must have a reeeeally low bar/very desperate for devs.
Seeing this makes me pretty certain it'd be easy/minimal effort to get a decent chunk of grant funding... but with a bar THAT low, I'm not wanting to be associated with them.8 -
Anyone have any experience developing with blockchain? Or integrating blockchain into their application?7
-
In your opinion, is it a good decision to migrate on freelancing on blockchain development as a fullstack web developer, by a financial point of view? I guess there is an increasing request and income for blockchain-based projects.5
-
What do you think guys about this "internet computing" - run a webpage with all is data on blockchain thing? I have mixed feelings, it's like the app you made is nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Can be the future?1

What does a bitcoin mining puzzle have to do with verifying transactions/driving consensus across nodes?
The winner just gets to write? The next block but doesn't that mean he is like admin, he can make up all the transactions he wants?22 -
Hey guys,
I have to Select my Bachelor thesis/topic in the next few days. I would like to do something with Crypto Currencies especially with the Blockchain System. There is a wide range of usage for that and i Think it could be very interesting.
The Problem is that am Not Really Sure what Topic or challenge my Project could contain. There is much to say about it but i dont Think it would be enough to just describe it.
There should be a Problem or anything like that I can solve..
Or Is it possible to just Analyse the blockchain and the affect it have These Days and the Future?
I would appreciate a few ideas or suggestions :)
Regards

Hey guys, just wanted to know what does everyone really think about Blockchain, honestly.
I've seen Blockstack create so many modules duplicating almost every centralized functionality, but why aren't they as famous yet. Just because people aren't aware?7 -
does anyone here into blockchain? hows it going.. Is it good to switch from Full stack dev to blockchain . I have covered the basic.. don't know whether or not should I go into this field .. Its just am getting free learning .. but not sure whether or not I have to switch into this5
-
Hmm. Just wondering, who's a blockchain Dev here? Have been in this field for years but I haven't met many devs in my field2
-
Hello guys, apparently I'm going to write a thesis about Smart contracts and its benefits for the financial industry. Have you got any keywords I definitely should look into and write about in my thesis ? Just a little community brainstorm here. Would be glad if you could help me a little.
Also, do you think it's possible to fill about 50 pages in 8 week time ? The short time is making me nervous -
Been learning more about crypto and blockchain (i know i know buzzword) but I mean I'm still a noob at pretty much everything so it was hard to find something that explains all that at a really technical level. BUT I then found www.cryptoeconomics.study
and it's been going great 😊 -
Wrote an article on basic block chain some time back. Do give it a read(4 mins only :P)

Before i get my degree i have to write my finishing thesis on blockchain topic, has to include something about using math from linear algebra or math analysis that is applied to blockchain, can anyone give me links of similar examples of finishing thesis of this for inspiration?8

EY and ConsenSys announced the formation of the Baseline Protocol with Microsoft which is an open source initiative that combines cryptography, messaging and blockchain to deliver secure and private business processes at low cost via the public Ethereum Mainnet. The protocol will enable confidential and complex collaboration between enterprises without leaving any sensitive data on-chain. The work will be governed by the Ethereum-Oasis Project.
Past approaches to blockchain technology have had difficulty meeting the highest standards of privacy, security and performance required by corporate IT departments. Overcoming these issues is the goal of the Baseline Protocol.
John Wolpert, ConsenSys’ Group Executive for Enterprise Mainnet added, “A lot of people think of blockchains as the place to record transactions. But what if we thought of the Mainnet as middleware? This approach takes advantage of what the Mainnet is good at while avoiding what it’s not good at.”

Why NOT much Solidity Blockchain Jobs out there?
Just a quick question , I see a lot of people claiming to teach blockchain development by teaching solidity , React and making full stack Dapps with web3. ( thats it ) Now there are other articles and stuff that you python and node.js as well to teach blockchain. But for now I am calling out the major tutorials/yTube channels etc. [ wont be taking names , am sorry ]
But when you go out in the job market. there is simply NOT enough jobs under this area.
yes there are jobs of blockchain dev, but then they have a huge part of them including Python/node.js/java.
So what should I draw out a conclusion , u simply cannot be a blockchain developer without being a full stack MERN/Python-React/Java-React. developer2 -
Hello DevRant!
I'm curious, how many here are interested in blockchain related tech? Did you ever dabble in anything blockchain related?2 -
I'm currently taking part in IBM hackathon based on a healthcare theme and my project idea is that storing patient healthcare reports or medical research docs on the blockchain, is this idea had some potential to make a difference in the hackathon?10
-
Has anyone here built a functioning blockchain from scratch? I’ve been poking around looking for resources, preferably eBooks, but hoping to find some that have been road tested. Language/technology neutral; more interested in the quality of the guide and result.

Startuptoken hackathon pretend to rocket blockchain projects. Two years ago they realize their winner was a remake so they cancelled the prize. This time the winner had already a team and a whitepaper so they cancelled the prize. Now they organize modathons lol but they still introduce themselves as a launchpad. Do you no other startuptofuck blockchain launchpad to absolutely escape from?

Is there a standard around checking the checksum of a bundled weapp to make sure it's the same as what the open source codebase would compile to?
I'm working on some opensource blockchain interface software and obviously blockchain passwords are pretty important, so we do all transaction signing client side and password storage client side, but there's no point doing that if the user can't verify that the password isn't being sent off to some server in secret, but the only way to ensure that is with open source software + a checksum check upon loading, because opensource software doesn't mean the deployed version is the exact opensource branch version.
Any ideas?1
