recently a girl from a nearby high school committed suicide. it's sad, and i know what i'm about to say is going to be controversial, but i think it shouldn't be on social media. maybe her close friends posting it on instagram, to remember her, but that's it.

of course, that's not what happened. people started posting "❤️" on their snapchat stories, and theyre saying they are raising awareness. (they don't know this girl or why she did it or anything, they're just doing it because their friends did it.)

this awareness, is well, temporary.

the point of snapchat is that all the pictures go away, so why would they talk about suicide prevention on there? do they want suicide prevention to go away? this is most prevelent on snapchat, but on others, too.

thats what people turned her death into. a trend.

just like #prayforparis, and others, but on a local scale.

the problem with social media is that things go away. in a day or two it'll be like this never happened. she won't be remembered like she would if she weren't on social media.

I use Spotify heavily. (After all, I am paying for it every fucking month.) In fact, it's safe to say I use it upwards of 12+ hours a day.

My problem is: the default media center is that god forsaken piece of shit groove music (not only is it shit, I also have 0 mp3 files on my computer).

No problem, I'll just change the default media center. Fucking Windows doesn't let me change it to Spotify. Odd. Well, I did download it from Spotify's website. Let's try downloading it from the Windows store.

When working on a project codebase that is expected to grow and evolve heavily. How do you usually split up your CSS (SASS, LESS etc) in a good way to take into account all the different device sizes?

I am not asking how it is done but more about the design of the code. This would be for a production codebase to be released.

Do you use large blocks broken down by media...

I have been endeavouring to greatly improve my CSS and have done so. But this question has been bugging me. Both sides seem to be a bit sloppy and my programmer side is fighting the repeatitipve code.

I was originally looking for a USB print and scanner server, but I ended up getting two Raspberry Pis instead. The Zero W will serve the printer (CUPS for printing and SANE for an online PDF scanning system that I'll create) and I'll use the 3B as a media server. Time to learn some Python 😄

Finally I was able to look into css grids in more detail and gotta say it's impressive, also "grid-template-areas" made me chuckle for a bit, at how unusual and easy you can define layouts (even compatible with media queries!), which are also heavily obvious and readable, reminds me of the old games where characters were just symbols.

just bought a dedicated server, coming in the mail this Friday. gonna use it for a 24/7 Minecraft server and maybe some web apps to experiment with stuff. Social media platforms getting away with suspensions and all other manner of 'social punishment' has to be the highest level authoritarianism has ever reached in its entire history. Social Media platforms, have it seems, become a side gig for tyrants and the excuses don't cut it with people anymore.
It's hard to believe that "we the people" allow companies to govern over entire populations of people, much larger than some of the most democratic and free countries on the planet with an iron fist.

The enforcement of community standards for breaking arbitrary rules that wouldn't make it to a solicitors desk is extraordinary in the extreme. If it's not a credible threat or illegal, then it's obvious an intention behind the punishment is conditioning.

And this is what authoritarian regimes have done throughout history.

Whenever I go to some major Mastodon server, the explore page contains at least some of the following:
- a post about "rich" people bad
- a post labelling some group of people as "nazis"
- a post promoting some black / lgbt thing
- a post about "left-wing government good, right-wing government bad"

And at least 20% of the posts on the explore page are about how "we" are better than whatever the current negative topic in the media is.

I have to install windows for this project because I usually work in spare half hours and the virtual machine takes 15 minutes to boot.

I tried to Google what to do if my only windows machine has space on the secondary disk only, because the install media creator requires 8 gigabytes. The only answers were mocking the op for buying a 50 GB SSD. I didn't even start working and I already hate the windows community.

My former senior developer thought that including script tags for each JavaScript function you write is efficient. For example: contact function will have contact.js, vacancy function will have vacancy.js. FYI he doesn't merge them in production. What's more shocking was that my project manager thought was the same.

I just set up SSHFS so I can play my media library on my TV without moving all my data!

Basically my setup is something like this:

*Gaming PC (with a total of 10TiB - 6TiB being used for my /home) located in my office

*Home Media PC (with total of 150GB) located in my living room

Everything I have is on my 6TB HDD, and just my Videos folder is larger than the hard drive in the Home Media PC, so I decided to set up SSHFS. After about 15 minutes of reading man pages and trying different configurations, I ended up just needing "sshfs -o nonempty -o allow_other [user]@[location]:/home/$USER/Videos /home/server/Videos/"

Some people think that web development is easy because they use framework for responsive designs, they dont know the struggle of manually using media query in css.

Was a PC repair guy. A wealthy man saw that I have potential, asked me to build a website. I started learning how to code. Frustrated, quit the job, and bummed off for weeks. Started fresh, like magic, everything seemed easier without the pressure. Freelanced for a few years, now at a media company, as an XD.

I have been wondering if there is a way to use social media in a positive way.

Since high school (when Facebook first started) I knew that this social media was a cancer.

From what I know there is no positive use for cancer, and I’m pretty sure that the same is true for social media.

But to be honest, it is a tool that is very effective in manipulating the masses. In fact, it is likely the greatest tool for leading sheep to slaughter since religion. I’m always looking to take advantage of every tool at my disposal.

Tools shouldn’t be seen as good of bad, so I am going to have to accept it is a tool of great power and use it. Hopefully I can use it in a positive way, but that doesn’t look likely...

I'm the first person in 4 generations that works in a tech/hands-on area.

Social media site/app... I think social media is such a saturated market yet everyone seems to think their spin is somehow unique and worthwhile...

Although, not sure if DevRant counts as 'social media' but tbh I see real value in getting developers to form a community, where to profit potential comes from potentially linking developers to recruiters/employers (targeted ads to devs for shit we would want). And devs get a nice platform to socialize and bullshit about things we all experience (ie, the 'community' is real and valuable to us)

I giggle a little bit every time I see a Microsoft Employee on Social Media because it's always "Derp McDerpington [MSFT]" and I ALWAYS read the "MSFT" as "Misfit"

Two top do-overs:
1) Not be a dev and try harder to be an astronaut as was my original plan.
2) If #1 still gave trouble, at least not waste 6 years of my career doing a detour into social media and PR. It was the early days when the salary (6 figures) and bonuses (5 figures) at that level of the corporate hierarchy were nice. But other than a bulked up 401k and paid-off house, social media ended up being a dead end for me. Going back to dev work meant I had NOTHING skill-wise to show for that time. I have a Surface 3 for home dev stuff. I wanted to get back into C++ for graphic/GPU programming. However it uses an Intel Graphics 5000 chipset so I can't do CUDA and the Intel Media Server can't upgrade the graphics driver because it's a Surface.

What should I do? I would rather not build a system just to play.

An Android app to query user details using the GitHub api and display them in charts which can be shared on social media.

I solemnly swear never to use the Fedora Media Writer tool ever again. I used it to create a bootable USB to install Ubuntu, and guess what, the setup opened fine, disk check gave no errors, but the setup always got stuck. So I created the bootable using Rufus and it worked like a charm.

Microsoft is a greedy piece of shit company. I hate them. They continuously make my life harder. I'm an arch user, but I had to install Windows on another laptop. Guess what? They literally to throttle the downloads for the ISO itself unless you use their ass Media Creation Tool. Recently, they also removed some drivers from the said ISO, which literally can't be found anywhere, so they pretty much force you to use their shitty media tool from another Windows machine to get a working installation.

The biggest problem of a social media platform when it gets popular enough is how to handle low quality media that people post.
