Pro Tip: You can also charge your laptop faster by placing it carefully in the microwave and setting the timer for 10 minutes.

Hey @dfox and @trogus, was wondering, are there any plans for items higher than 20K upvotes? I'm at more than 120K now and I'd like a new item and also maybe something to work towards :)
Also, I'm just asking/wondering, I know what a busy life is. This is nothing more than a question, not demanding anything! (I'm deffo not in the position to demand anything)
Thanks!24 -

Where I work, in our database, we use 3 to indicate true and 7 to indicate false and 0 is true but null is false
In another table, we use 'P' to indicate true and 'I' to indicate false and 'Y' is also false and null is false
And the most used table, we also use 'Y' to indicate yes and 'N' to indicate no, but null is also Yes.
We also store integers as varchar in a live table, but stays an integer in all the other tables. I hope I'm not there when the number of digits exceeds the varchar limit.
These are all live and used in production all created by my boss, the head of IT.8 -

So I'm playing around with Node late at night and decide to make something of it. Made a real-time 2-way communication system with NodeJS, Express and Socket.io. The UI currently looks cheap, but it's clean. Open multiple tabs to see it in action.
You can also send private messages by typing /p username message. I could add authentication here and also connect it to MongoDB.

In my wallowing experience as a freelancer I've noticed that almost all C/C++ clients are perfectionist. You just can't please them by getting the job done quickly.
I got a libcurl job from one the other day to scrape data from a target website and within an hour it was ready. I notified the client and he was both amazed and confused assuming it would take the whole week.
C++Client: The code works but you need to take your time.
Me: Sorry?
C++Client: Yes, it works but you used "string" instead of "wstring"
Me: 😊 Oh okay... *converts strings to wstring*
C++Client: And also variable names should be more descriptive.
Me: 😏 *int foobar => int very_long_descriptive_foobar_01*
C++Client: And also use "shorts" for page nums it'll save some bytes
Me: 😕 *int => short...*
C++Client: And also use forloops instead of whileloops
Me: ☹️ *whileloops => forloops*
C++Client: And also use -- instead of ++ in loops
Me: 😤 *for(... i++) => for(... i--)*
C++Client: And also...
C++Client: And also...
C++Client: And also...
C++Client: And also...
C++Client: And also...
C++Client: And also...
C++Client: And also...
===> Seven "and also" days later <===
Me: *completed 10 Java projects behind the scene*
C++Client: And also use pthread instead of thread

Finally I was able to look into css grids in more detail and gotta say it's impressive, also "grid-template-areas" made me chuckle for a bit, at how unusual and easy you can define layouts (even compatible with media queries!), which are also heavily obvious and readable, reminds me of the old games where characters were just symbols.1

Holy brainfucking brain melt, those references, scoping and borrowing and cloning and whatnot, because there is no garbage collector, but also no direct memory management.

My bank created a "new and improved" banking app asking me to take a selfie after first sending them a picture of my id.
I am already a customer of the bank, they have a copy of my id, why do they also want a selfie?
Also with the old banking app I could just call them from my phone number (which they also have) and they confirmed it was me over the phone by asking 2 questions and then provided me with a code to just enable the app on my personal phone.10 -

My last job in Australia before moving to Japan was where I had my best boss. He was pretty chill about a lot of things and he was also a pilot and DJ in his free time. But he was also the no BS type of guy and would help resolve issues in a quick manner.

A house with an elevator that is just wide enough for one person standing sideways, and it can also travel horizontally between houses. Also, near an entrance, there is an orchestra pit, but it's filled with expired smoked meat. There is also a garbage chute, but it's just a well right in the middle of the house between staircases. It also has bars and mesh instead of walls, so everyone can smell everything. It can only be emptied from the roof.6

First rant;
First of all I am an applied computer science student in the second semester.
We've got a few assignments and the first set went fine but this last week boy ohh boy - first of all today I got noticed by one of my two teammates that the other one won't get stuff done in this assignment (he also did next to nothing in the first)
Also the the assignment is unclear and the given methods and parameters don't care about naming conventions (for one method I don't even know what it should do). Also we have to use new liberies (java.io etc.) and learn them on our own so far it would be okay, the time limit is two weeks, also doable
BUT the same chair also made one assignment for web development with the same deadline and also no explanation how to do stuff.
I don't say I am perfect but the expectations are too high, while also studying for other modules1 -

Neovim and atom. I can't really pick one. Neovim is great for smaller config files and it's really fast. Also, I usually have terminal window open.
On the other hand, I like atom because of its looks and I prefer to use it for bigger projects. I also use it to edit js, html and css files. -
Netbeans, it looks ancient, is slow, and takes 100000m clicks to get anything done, and also has useless silly snippets

So I've been looking at web dev job apps recently and reading over some of the requirements needed and almost every company advertising for a web dev is also wanting a web developer who is also a 10/10 web designer... this proper irks me as after doing a course which helps you ease easily into the web industry being a competent designer wasn't a requirement.
Why is it that to be a web dev now days you need to be also good at designing?1 -
finishing existing projects, resurrecting abandoned projects with dev friends from uni (where we had actual customers calling us and saying they wanna pay us, but we are idiots and couldn't come up with effective pricing)
meanwhile learn proper JS (and node.js, also getting from noob to pro in vue.js/vuex and react/redux)
also getting better in linux server management -
I don't know maybe it's just me, but Mac asking if i want to update softwares just distracts me so much.
Also you can only disable it for a day, so after that it will ask you again... :/
Also chances are that I'm just dumb and couldn't find a way to disable it. :D Also open offices, no idea who though that it's a good idea1 -
R
Dot can be used for variable name just like underscore. And to confuse, R has object oriented also2 -
Trying to get a multi container setup using nginx (also in a docker container) to work with web sockets. There's a chance that the load balancer will also cause issues later. And the front end uses nuxt, which will probably also cause issues once we turn server side rendering on as well.
This is not really something I've studied deeply before.
I'm not having fun.1 -

2 hours of sleep because of a hard deadline. Now I will sleep most of my Saturday and work again tonight for free because I need to catch up. Also hate the nasal cycle that wakes me up and suddenly I'm hungry too. Ate breakfast and will wait probably 30 minutes then sleep again.
Have you experienced this also?3 -

Common Man: How do you software developers earn so much? What's the secret of your success?
Software Developer: It's not a secret really. It's like any other job, we make sure we are always needed. So we create a mess and then get paid to solve the mess. How you ask? Software developers create the most complex and useful software. Since it's complex, others learn it and become part of the so called the few experts and then get paid tons as very less experts are there for the software and the creators of the software are also of course experts and in fact considered Guru, because, well, they wrote the complex software. They are geniuses, because it's so hard to write complex software. And many of these experts also create new tools to make the software easier to use, for newbies. They also write articles around it - explanations, tutorials, inner workings and gotchas, and also publish books and videos - in paid tutorial sites, and some videos on YouTube too. -
So are game consoles also affected by these processor problems? Many articles just mention PCs and phones5

And mostly on personal projects, no client to shit all over the place.
With m'y brother we also often code at 4 hands in repl.it -

Really curious:
After what amount of time after leaving your previous job, where you were deeply involved with client side infrastructure and deployment, would you expect the credentials to stop working / be changed ?
I should state that the credentials are not service accounts, but also not distinct for every dev / devops.
I might also add that the clients involved are courier services, service providers and ... Oh yeah ... A financial institution
Also everyone is based in the EU, so GDPR and all ...6 -

Newbie question
Any good free resources for full stack web development. Also if a resource teaches mainly frontend but also teaches some backend it is a full stack web development resource in my eyes. I was looking at freecodecamp but it is a bit too vast for me. I am also looking at the cokplete intro to web development v2 course by Brian holt for free on frontend masters but it is 2 years old and has not been updated. Also it does not teach that much bakcend hust node and express.
Also another question is frontend masters good for web development. I did not find many threads about it. I got a discount for it which gives me a one year subscription for 195 dollars18 -
