!dev related but is a rant
I don't think that either Mark Zuckerberg nor Elon Musk are experts on AI but I'd agree more with Musk than Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg made a website, that's not rocket science.
Musk made a reusable rocket, that is rocket science.10 -
New client wanted us to redo their site and boost their SEO because "nobody has ever used our contact form".
Looking at their current site, turns out their contact form is POSTed to an HTML page, that obviously does 0 processing on it. Like tossing it on the trash bin.
Their current website is done by a company that claim they're experts on web design for our clients sector.
Still haven't stopped laughing.7 -
My morning (RO = remote office):
Me: Your xxx implementation is very strange.
RO: Yes we are following a new example from experts in this field. See this link.
Me: Paragraph 1, use xxx class in these situations. Were not doing that.
RO: Yes we had problems with that, we decided to skip that.
Me: Paragraph 2, always use xxx when accessing data. Were not doing that.
RO: Yes that create many bugs, we skipped that.
Me: This section on debugging says to enable this flag while in development to allow the IDE to alert you to issues.
RO: Yes this causes the app to crash constantly. So we took it out.
Me: ... because its finding issues ... and telling you where the problem is, with an error message.
... your not following the experts at all.
RO: We are!, please read the link we provided.
... this will be discussed on my exit interview6 -
So I walk to work and pass this sign for a place called helloworld experts in everywhere.
And eventually I was curious enough to go to their website and to my surprise they're a travel company :(
I was expecting some sort of software development company with focus on cloud software due to their slogan, pretty disappointed.3 -
Some devs like to write meaningless or too general commit messages.
Stop it. Get help.

Our professor in our college deliberately makes a mistake in the program and ask people how it happened.
If someone solves it he complements them and it really makes them feel motivated.
I think he is the best professor 😊😊4 -
Dear client / customer
You have been misled. The customer is not always right. The sooner you realise this and start listening to us as the consultants you hired the better things are going to get. If you were experts in how to do this stuff you wouldn't need us. Please recognise the skills.

So... I'm pretty much dead inside.
But today I laughed in a meeting.
Nearly died of laughter.
We're currently understaffed for various reasons, especially the ongoing migrations etc.
So a lot of projects are currently in "maintenance" mode (e.g. no new features) - cause we lack the necessary man power.
The meeting was more or less:
Team: We had an ongoing discussion in the team regarding logging and possibilities of tracing and XY suggested we implement OpenTelemetry in *all* projects in the next weeks, can we do that?"
Sometimes I'm not sure If I'm in a sitcom for torture experts.4 -
Beginners be like, "First rule of programming, If it works don't touch it". But experts will be like "Why does it work?". That's why they are called experts.10

I need help from mobile app development experts. I need help to create a mobile application for money transfers. If not difficult, then recommend the developers who can advise me.2

Microsoft Teams can burn.
Their latest feature ? Well, turns out that when I get notifications on mobile that I do not get on desktop BECAUSE I AM FUCKING INTERACTING WITH THE CHAT OR CHANNEL THAT SENDS ME MOBILE NOTIFICATION, the notifications do not clear themselves. Oh, no, that would be too smart.
So EACH FUCKING EVENING I sit and browse all the fucking notifications to see if there is anything noteworthy I need to act on, or if it is a dead notification from earlier today.
Dear Lord, Microsoft are fucking experts at TAKE A WORKING FEATURE AND BRAKE IT.14 -
Fuuuuck!!!
In 2017 I had a reeeeally sweet offer for a Java-gig. Equity, quarterly evaluations with potential raises, exciting products, world class experts as colleagues and all. The catch was relocating across the entire country, and due to some family health stuff, I was forced to decline.
Today I learned that the company is valued at about $150M. The equity alone would have been worth around 1.5M today, and thats not all. One of the founders are giving away about 15% of the shares to the employees, landing them about 100K in equity each.
And here I sit, wondering about what the next electric bill will be...10 -
I'm the only one annoyed by the emoji abusing programming influencers?
In particular I hate their presumption in proclaiming themselves experts in something just after following a swallow online course on it.15 -

Well then, good luck with your spaghetti code solution.3 -
It was my first month as a driver developer fresh out of grad school, at a semiconductor company. There was an elusive memory alignment bug that had eluded the experts on the team. Of course, they had to assign it to me.
I was looking at the code where alignment was being calculated for nested structures case. I saw something funny: "size_t(object)". I asked the expert where it should have been "sizeof(object)". And, sure enough it was!!
I was super-thrilled to have fixed a bug in my first month, which had troubled the team for a long time! ^_^6 -

By accidentally telling his computer to delete everything in his servers, hosting provider Marco Marsala has, according to tech "experts", removed all trace of his company and the websites that he looks after for his customers.

"Did you see, cryptocurrency XYZ has N commits in the past week, but the price hasn't gone up?!?! WhAtS gOiNg oN!?!?"
Dude. If I could just write code to make the price of things in the real world go up, I can assure you, I would have done it.
That's not how this works. THAT'S NOT HOW ANY OF THIS WORKS REEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
God... normie "crypto experts" who haven't coded a day in their life really piss me off, and are super cringe. The funniest is that none of them or their followers realize it.2 -

Me: I need a subtitle for the header on my website: “Our Team”
Chatgpt: Sure, here are good subtitles for “Our Team” header on your website:

Me: Make it a little bit lengthier:
Chatgpt: Sure, here is a more detailed subtitle option for the “Our Team” header on your website:

I feel like this dude gets orgasm when it sees the word “lengthier”.2 -
most of the self-described "AI experts" on my Linkedin feed were "scrum masters" not even half a decade ago. something to think about2

I find it very strange and telling when people tell me that a dev shouldn't "re-invent the wheel", "roll your own" or "leave it to the experts" while simultaneously promoting substandard own-rolled projects by other people that simply got popular.
Kind of a strange elitist double standard that encourages a bad mindset of "I can't be as good as them" and it's toxic.
If you wanna make your own framework / package / etc, just do it, it might even be better.7 -
The Halt and Catch Fire writers and tech experts must have lived those days. Totally nailed it to the finest detail. I am impressed. Show me a 10mg (how will I ever fill it up) Bernoulli platter 😀
Great series but warning it is not a comedy like Silicon. Very different but amazing how some things are same as today in concept.7 -

Anyone here tried the bluewhale game?
Apparently, government banned it and local tv channel is running news about it ( around 2 months after it became viral globally ). Many overnight "experts" think it is an actual mobile application game uploaded on all stores. What a joke!
I don't understand how anyone can be stupid enough to fall for such things..3 -
Did this question really deserve a down vote?

Stackexchange community is so annoying at times. It's just that a few handful of experts are helpful.
But again my recent questions on stackoverflow were answered by myself only after a week or so 😐9 -
Hold a meeting that the participants actually want.
The biggest time wasters I had to attend were:
- "generic weekly meet up of people not working together telling what's new on their side" (I don't work with you, I DON'T CARE)
- "management wants updates/wants to talk about doing instead of letting us do" (go read Jira tickets, and ffs stay out of the experts' field... They're experts in it for a reason)
- "no agenda, this is just to get to know each other" (I get to know people on my own terms, stop forcing what can't be forced)
- most Scrum meetings (some people need guidance, I don't! Your Scrum chains actually hinder my productivity! Can we please stop wasting my time and nerves?)
And the best meetings? A couple of coworkers realizing "hey we need to make a decision here, let's book a conference room together" and "hey you know your stuff about xyz, can you teach us what you know?".10 -
Does anyone find the laravel documentation just lacking? It seems like it the twitter feed of documentation leaving out very important information that leaves me banging my head for hours. I really like laravel and much better than working with raw php but I wish there was an option in the drop down for additional a more flushed out version with more code examples. I understand experts don't want to parse through tons of text just to find the correct artisan command but c'mon.5

ChatGPT, Copilot, React, how to make a link in a frontend website?
To create a link in a frontend website, create a span, a div, or a paragraph that contains the link text. In your JavaScript web app, add an event listener to that element that opens the link on click. If you want to claim you're accessible, add an aria-role to the clickable element. To make debugging harder and only possible for the real arcane experts, let your framework generate generic ids and class name hashes for styling and event handling, like "item_09fcfck" or "elementor_element_foo_bar". Avoid, at all price, to use an a href element!2 -
!rant but question to you experts:
Hey, guys. I'm currently trying to up my game in terms of web development. I already know js, html, php and css quite well (enough to become a tutor at my university) but I'm not shure which frameworks (serverside and clientside) are worth considering. Until now I wrote everything from scratch, which is not very sustainable (waaaay to much code to maintain)
Could you please tell me your softwarestacks, what library to use, which frameworks to learn (Vue/React/Angular/...)? Every opinion is very appreciated and won't go unheard. Thanks in advance.
btw: you guys are the nicest people I ever met online. Thank you for being so awesome.1 -

"Most tech content is bullshit"
N-gate summary:
"A webshit determines and announces the core truth of webshit. Hackernews bemoans the displacement of the technical book by the shitposting factory, but fails to reinvent the industry journal as a replacement. Other Hackernews debate whether the problem might actually be those snotty kids who don't know anything. The Hackernewsest post comes as someone declares critical thought as Considered Harmful, and recommends instead pestering random experts to train you for free. The rest of the comments are mad at Google for returning shitty search results, making it too difficult to just be told what to do."8 -
Today. I had to argue against using unencoded characters in URLs. The manager did not take me seriously.
Fuck everything about this. The contract jobs I've had lately are the worst jobs I've had in the past 10 years. This latest company hires junior developers because they "need senior level experts".1 -
I recently got a job interview and i am finally working as a junior consultant!
The most exciting thing is the fact that I am still studying Informatic Engineering .
I have still a long road to walk since I am still on the second year of a three years course. But finally I feel that my knowledge is being appreciated and I can use that in order to help a company.
If any experts in this area could give me advice, I am going forward to read them. I am new to devRant too !4 -

For chrissakes, the Stackasses on Stack Overflow have, in their typical fashion, downvoted my question instead of attempting to answer it.
I seriously need help with coding a PyQt5 wizard I made in Qt Designer. I’m so sick of fucking around with these idiots.
Can someone point me somewhere PRODUCTIVE where I might get some help? Looking at Experts Exchange and wondering if they have the necessary expertise. Getting to the point where I’m actually thinking of shelling out money. But I’d much rather just find a good online community or something.
TIA15 -
How many of you folks here consider yourself specialist in a certain area? Was this deliberate, and has it paid off? My lead dev is always trying to bestow upon me the advantages of being a generalist in this industry, and yet the employers I have spoken to, on the whole, seem to get most excited by “experts”. If it fits the expert they, want, of course...5

Started Data Science course on big data universuty. The outcomes are heavily dependent on domain experts/stakeholders!!! Since all the answers are false positives and need to decide what make sense with the help of domain experts. And most of the Data scientists are not from programming background, they are domain experts who turned into Data scientists. Thoughts if I should continue with learning big data/data science, knowing that I have knowledge in information retrieval and search engines. -
So, what's your IT trivia?
One of my favourites is sosumi.
When Apple Computers started up they were sent a "cease and desist" notice by Apple Music (The Beatles).
They reached a settlement that Apple Computers would never publish music and Apple Music would never sell computers.
So when the Mac came out and played a tune on startup, the filename was sosumi.
Wikipedia now appears to dispute this, saying that sosumi wasn't the startup sound, but some other sound - any Mac experts care to comment?1 -

Creating an secure authentication system is not that easy...
Especially if you create it for a community full of devs.
But I think I've found a secure solution.
Maybe some security experts on here could review the code after I'm finished.

There is a Facebook group I’m a part of called “ReactJS Expert Community” and I can tell you it’s filled with anything but experts. While I appreciate the effort, gdpr has some very stupid parts which clearly show that it wasn't properly discussed with experts.
For example: Information that somebody had received can never be reliably deleted, any attempt to do so will only make people use alternative clients. The only part of the service that I control is the server, especially in open source, and if people accept that others will see their data, it cannot be "unseen". I can delete it from my side so no one else will receive it _from me,_ but please don't make laws that enforce me to write client features no one wants because anyone familiar with the market knows that this will simply produce an alternative.3 -
I wanna cool robot sidekick,
The more irritable the better, like bender from futurama or K2 from rogue one. (Even murderous maniac of a an ai like hal9000 and skynet is fine)
The machine learning technologies aren't just there yet though, they can be irritable but not because of their smart ass answers just the opposite really.
I will need a team with 100+ people that are experts in neurology AND machine learning. Also 10 years.. we will get there !1 -

So, I manage my server with docker containers (nginx-proxy and the letsencrypt-companion). I limit access to some subdomains using basic auth, but I want to use client certificates for convenience.
So my questions to the experts:
1) Do you know a good (and convenient) way to manage client certificates ? This should include revoking certs and allowing specific certs only for specific subdomains.
2) Should I use my letsencrypt CA for this or would a self signed CA better suited?
3) Any things I should be aware of?1 -
May have asked this before but couldn't get an answer from any of the "experts" at my company so...
How do you store/pass in db login and certs for testing/debugging from your own machine?
I'm using Java Spring and the way I'm thinking of is to override the application.yaml, in the Debug configs, to point to one that has the credentials but only shared within the team?11 -

When I started at a new job and couldn't find the CMDB. I asked one of the so-called experts if it was true that we didn't have one, and he confirmed. "We don't need one," he said. "We have puppet!"
Thousands of servers. Hundreds in our own little silo. No CMDB at all. What the fuck?1 -
After getting fed up of “being productive” I fooled around on GitHub and had a look at the Stuxnet virus source code which was obtained using a decompiler. Experts who reverse-engineered it found out that it was written in “object-oriented C.” While C is not an object oriented language, anything you can do with classes you can do with structs, static functions, pointers & function pointers. You can see this coding style in the Linux kernel, CPython interpreter and many other places. That was the first indication that a government agency or defence industry was responsible. Amazing stuff !6

it's actually kind of surprising how many times programmers, who are experts in data representation, mess up coming up with data representation standards then have to reinvent them
so when you run into a data format that hasn't changed in 30 years it's like woweeee someone thought something through well for once, wtf2 -

Security experts have discovered hundreds of fake websites which are being used to spread dangerous malware for Android and Windows devices. A "vast" network of over 200 internet pages, which impersonate 27 brands such as household names like TikTok, PayPal and Snapchat, are being used to spread a vicious bug which can empty out bank accounts. These bogus websites feature the notorious ERMAC banking trojan which is capable of stealing sensitive login details for 467 online banking and cryptocurrency apps.9

Been applying for jobs lately and despite the years of experience and using the latest toys I’ve been finding it harder than ever to even get a positive response to my CV. One thing I’ve been noticing is that companies seem to now not care so much about frontend skills and more about complex algorithms when the role is ui focused, or to have a demand for dev ops experience. Are we really getting back to the days of thinking that jack of all trades can be experts in everything?3

Why employers strongly believe Front-End and Back-End are synonyms of Full-Stack?
They are requiring Front devs to have knowledge and experience with relational databases and Back devs to be experts in HTML and CSS, sometimes graphic design stuff too.

So, we should be done with the redesign project for this site and a while back we got feedback from the client.
Now getting feedback isn't a bad thing, until you get 6 pages of feedback.

I'm really frustrated by the size of node_modules folder that gets created every time for every project. So, I've been looking for some time-space saving solutions. And I found PNPM ( https://pnpm.js.org/ ) , Yarn ( https://yarnpkg.com/ ) and Pkglink ( https://github.com/jeffbski/pkglink ). But I'm not sure which is better to serve my purpose.
Things I'm looking forward to solving:
1. I don't want to re-download the same packages over and over again
2. I don't want the same packages to be in multiple projects and eat up space
3. I want a stable, fast and disk space saving solution

Common Man: How do you software developers earn so much? What's the secret of your success?
Software Developer: It's not a secret really. It's like any other job, we make sure we are always needed. So we create a mess and then get paid to solve the mess. How you ask? Software developers create the most complex and useful software. Since it's complex, others learn it and become part of the so called the few experts and then get paid tons as very less experts are there for the software and the creators of the software are also of course experts and in fact considered Guru, because, well, they wrote the complex software. They are geniuses, because it's so hard to write complex software. And many of these experts also create new tools to make the software easier to use, for newbies. They also write articles around it - explanations, tutorials, inner workings and gotchas, and also publish books and videos - in paid tutorial sites, and some videos on YouTube too. -

How or in what way does this hurt development as opposed to languages that make distinctions between prototypes and objects?8 -
I hate BT.
Today, it started redirecting me to a page saying, basically, to activate their DNS server on the router for "BT Protect" and "Parental Controls" to work, despite the fact that my parents never turned it on. Their support lines appear to be staffed with Indians taught to answer very basic questions, and forwarded me to "tech experts" from BT, a service that apparently costs £8 a month, because "the issue is out of their scope".
How is this even legal?1 -
I had a discussion - no, it was more a lobotomy - with one of our "experts"
I was kinda confused, as he had several grafana tabs open and an query editor...
He explained to me that he debugs and optimizes his query based on the grafana data....
Elasticsearch cluster with several hundred, different indices, > 20 TB data
I explained to him the scrape interval of 5secs, that he cannot distinguish his query from other queries, that there is far too much of an interference... Let alone that a 5 sec scrape interval is a very loooong time.....
Nope. It makes perfect sense to him and he'll continue to work like this. -

I have a table with houses, there is the location, color, etc. Shall I make a column for the owner or make a separate table HouseToOwner - where I connect the id's? Any ASP.NET Core experts here? I'm using the localization code found from asp.net core documentation and it works fine except that if I let the browser open and idle for like 15 minutes and then refresh the page it always returns an english version. If I refresh again it goes back to the chosen language and works as long as I use it. Same thing locally and on server. Any ideas what this could be related to? I'm lost :(
