In 2014,. I sold 0.17 btc for $87. I bought pizza with that money. It was delicious. I regret nothing.14
- Trying this thing called Bitcoin
- Setup wallet in spare USB drive
- Buy 0.5 BTC (couldn’t afford more)
- Forgot about it
- Remembered I had bought BTC
- Looking like crazy for my USB drive
- Found it!
- Insert it into PC
- only one file in it
- essay_blah_blah_<sisters name>.doc
- poof, gone for ever17
The best time to buy bitcoin was when it was released
The second best time was a few years ago when it was only like $200/btc
The third best time was probably last year before they went up 650% in value
The worst time is apparently whenever I buy in11
TFFW you regret the decision of using “truecrypt” on a hard drive back in 2012......... and then forgetting the key...93
curl cheat.sh — get an instant answer to any question on (almost) any programming language from the command line
do curl cht.sh/go/execute+external+program to see how to execute external program in go
And this question: why I actually should I start the browser, and the browser has to downloads tons of JS, CSS and HTML, render them thereafter, only to show me some small output,
some small text, number or even some plot. Why can't I do a trivial query from the command line
and instantly get what I want?
I decided to create some service that will work as I think such a service should work.
And that is how wttr.in was created.
Nowadays you probably know, how to check the weather from the command line, but if not:
(curl wetter in Paris if you want to know the weather in Paris)
After that several other services were created (the point was to check how good the console
can solve the task, so I tried to create services providing information
of various nature: text, numbers, plots, pseudo graphic etc.):
curl rate.sx/btc # to check exchange rate of any (crypto)currency
curl qrenco.de/google.com # to QRenco.de any text
And now last but not least, the gem in this collection: cheat.sh.
The original idea behind the service was just to deliver a various UNIX/Linux command line cheat sheets via curl. There are several beautiful community driven cheat sheet repositories such as tldr, but the problem is that to use them you have to install them first, and it is quite often that you have no time for it, you just want to quickly check some cheat sheet.
With cheat.sh you don't need to install anything, just do:
curl cheat.sh/tar (or whatever)
you will get a cheat sheet for this command (if such cheat sheet exists inf one of the most popular community-driven cheat sheet repositories; but it surely does).
But then I thought: why actually show only existing cheat sheets? Why not generate cheat sheets or better to say on the fly? And that is how the next major update of cheat.sh was created.
Now you can simply do:
and get your question answered
(cht.sh is an alias for cheat.sh).
And it does not matter what language have you used to ask the question. To be short, all pairs (human language => programming language) are supported.
One very important major advantage of console oriented interfaces is that they are easily
programmable and can be easily integrated with various systems.
For example, Vim and Emacs plugins were created by means of that you can
query the service directly from the editor so that you can just write your
questions in the buffer and convert them in code with a keystroke.
The service is of course far from the perfection,
there are plenty of things to be fixed and to be implemented,
but now you can see its contours and see the contours of this approach,
console oriented services.
The service (as well as the other mentioned above services) is opensource, its code is available here:
What do you think about this service?
What do you think about this approach?
Have you already heard about these services before?
Have you used them?
If yes, what do you like about them and what are you missing?26
Do you also hate that feel when you have to deal with 110% idiot? Today, BTC hit 5000$ mark, right now it was 5200$. Media are now full of BTC. Me with my friend, having lunch.
Me: Wow, BTC is finnaly over 5k$.
Friend: Wow, I will just wait till it gets to 5500$ and then buy so I can sell it for kore when price drops.
Me: *trying to explain that if you want to profit you need to buy when its cheap and sell when its expensive*
Friend: No you are lying thats bullshit *ragequit*
It really hurts since he is really smart, especially good in math and logical thinking... 🙄15

father (1 month ago, btc price = $4000): no bitcoin for you! its gonna go down, people are randomly going to stop valuing it as a currency
father (now, btc price = $10000): you should've invested in bitcoin! with your own money! we could've been rich!
mother: please expand your interests, programming is not the only thing you should do6
Begins Bitcoin mining during it's infancy, stops because it's a waste of time and has no value.
1 BTC = £5,874
i cri evrytiem ;_;5
In the last 48 hours Bitcoin has gained about 2.000 USD in value. (Now ~12500$)
WHAT THE FUCK
And I remember this summer when Bitcoin was at about 4000 and everybody said "naaah I'd rather not invest in Bitcoin now, it will fall in value soon"16
Dogecoin hit USD $0.40 recently, which means it's time for the Crypto Rant.
TL;DR: Dogecoin is shit and is logically guaranteed to eventually fall unless it is fundamentally changed.
If you know how Crypto works under the hood, you can skip to the next section. If you don't, here's the general xyz-coin formula:
Money is sent via transactions, which are validated by *anybody*.
Since transactions are validated by anybody, the system needs to make sure you're not fucking it up on purpose.
The current idea (that most coins use today) is called proof-of-work. In short, you're given an extremely difficult task, and the general idea is you wouldn't be willing to do that work if you were just going to fuck up the system.
For validating these transactions, you are rewarded twofold:
1) You are given a fixed-size prize of the currency from the system itself. This is how new currency is introduced, or "minted" if you prefer.
2) You are given variable-size and user-determined prize called "transaction fees", but it could be more accurately called a "bribe" since it's sole purpose is to entice miners to add YOUR transaction to their block.
This system of validation and reward is called mining.
This smaller section compares the design o f BTC to Dogecoin - which will lead to my final argument
In BTC, the time between blocks (chunks of data which record transactions and are added to the chain, hence blockchain) is ten minutes. Every ten minutes, BTC transactions are validated and new Bitcoins are born.
In Dogecoin, the time between blocks is only one minute. In Theory, this means that mining Dogecoin is about ten times easier, because the system expects you to be able to solve the proof of work in an average of one minute.
The huge difference between BTC and Doge is the block reward (Fixed amount; new coins minted). The block reward for BTC is somewhat complicated compared to Doge: It started as 50 BTC per block and every 4 years it is halved ("the great halving"). Right now it's 6.25 BTC per block. Soon, the block reward will be almost nothing until BTC hits it's max of 21 million bitcoins "minted".
Dogecoin reward is 10,000 coins per block. And it will be that way for the end of time - no maximum, no great halving. And remember, for every 1 BTC block mined, 10 Doge blocks are mined.
Bitcoin and Dogecoin are now the two most popular coins in pop culture. What makes me angry is the widespread misunderstanding of the differences between the two. It is likely that most investors buy Dogecoin thinking they're getting in "early" because it's so cheap. They think it's cheap because it isn't as popular as Bitcoin yet. They're wrong. It's cheap because of what's outlined in section two of this rant.
Dogecoin is actually not very far off Bitcoin. Do the math: there's a bit over 100 billion Dogecoin in circulation (130b). There's about 20 million BTC. Calculate their total CURRENT values:
130b * $0.40 = 52b
20m * $60k = 1.2t
...and Doge is rising much, much faster than BTC because of the aforementioned lack of understanding.
The most common thing I hear about Doge is that "nobody expects it to reach Bitcoin levels" (referring to being worth 60k a fucking coin). They don't realize that if Doge gets to be worth just $10 a coin, it will not just reach Bitcoin levels but overtake Bitcoin in value ($1.3T).
It's worth highlighting that Dogecoin is literally designed to fail. Since it lacks a cap on new coins being introduced, it's just simple math that no matter how much Doge rises, it will eventually be worthless. And it won't take centuries, remember that 100k new Doge are mined EVERY TEN MINUTES. 1,440 minutes in a day * 10K per minute is 14.4 million new coins per day. That's damn near every Bitcoin to ever exist mined every day in Dogecoin10
Is obsidian a fucking joke?
Seriously, is it a joke? Why would you ever care so much about indexing literally everything, if the entire thing crashes and/or takes >5min to LITERALLY just open the fucking directory and/or (so help you) if that directory is full of projects/repos or whatever the fuck and the total size of said directory is like >5GB.
WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU INDEX EVERYTHING? -- "Ohh obsidian's not supposed to be used a fully fledged IDE, ohh obsidian should just handle MD files and normal sized projects, ohh the plugins and ease-of-use" -- Fuck.
There's no fucking real reason to index everything, BY DEFAULT. You open a directory with Obsidian? Doesn't matter, it's 1 byte, it's 100GB, you get indexed. Deal with it. It will use LITERALLY every resource your computer has. I'm surprised it doesn't go galaxy brain and ping if any other computers/devices are on the network and then attempt to connect and use their hardware (obsidian can be like a node!).
How shit can you be at understanding basic data structures and algorithms, where you just revert to based google-chrome brain and let the FUCKING TEXT EDITOR -- OBSIDIAN IS A FUCKING TEXT EDITOR HOLY SHIT -- hog all conceivable memory.
I swear to <some-deity> if anyone fucking says "Ohhhhhhhh actually, it's not a text editor, it has plugins and features and shit, it does all dis cool stff", OR, "Ohhhhh actually, obsidian indexes things for a very specific/rationale/apt/pragmatic/academic reason" OR "ohhhh, I have 100 iphones, 1000 ipads and a trillion desktop computers that each have 256GB of memory, why you hating on obsidian?" then go kick rocks. The fucking lot of you. Are you fucking kidding me.8
Anybody else feel like you've missed the crypto-currency bus?
It's one of my frequent regrets this past year, and I'm still figuring out how to get started earning some BTC.7
A dollar or a peso is a certain amount of work stored in a piece of paper. You need to work to get them or have other people work for you. When governments print new money and push it into circulation they reduce what you were compensated with for the work you did. Essentially they are taking your wealth (spending power) away without you even realizing. It is a modestly sophisticated form of theft. When public companies issue new shares onto the market they are doing same thing by reducing the percentage of the company you own. This is why you will see non-inflationary assets such as Bitcoin, land, gold bars and gold ETFs, etc. continue to rise in value and certainly outpace inflation. It’s because people who are smart with money are fearful of holding cash and they are looking for a safe place to store it. If you are not afraid of holding substantial amounts of cash, then I suppose you don’t really understand what it is. There is a reason why they don’t teach teenagers about inflation in any country of the world. As long as the masses are focused on earning and saving fiat, governments have so much more power and control. If you remove all of the fiat from circulation, then we will revert to a barter/trading system which would substantially reduce government power, at that point they would only maintain control using physical force, which is a lot more challenging to carry out. #btc #gold #rant #av40
Im starting to wonder if Js has gone too far.5
There used to be stories about how people sold their 650 bitcoins for $12 each and regretted it when it hit $22k.
Now they're gonna be regretting selling their bitcoin at $22k when it is worth $1M each.
My question is why is btc even popular again now?!23
Five or six years ago I was mining bitcoin. I was among first miners. I had a lot of bitcoin. I sold most of btc for 1$ or under to buy laptop so I can code. Bitcoin price was 1200$ at one point. I paid my laptop 300.000$. I am now senior dev. Fck money.5
Lua is one of the stupidest languages to ever exist.
Oh, the language is easy to learn? The syntax is friendly? There's only like negative 10 functions you ever need to know? Everything is a table?
EVERYTHING IS A TABLE?! WTF CARES? WHAT ABOUT NIL?!
The arrogance this language has is extraordinary, literally. No lang, except Lua, imposes such an opinionated dichotomy. Everything is a fucking table, or, it's nil. -- That's so fucking stupid.
And look, I get it, this lang (oh sorry, scripting language (?)) CAN be good and fun and whatever... the moment you start to do IO is the literal end of days.
Everything is nil. Except, if it's defined... then it's not nil. -- OK. That sounds sensible/reasonable enough. -- What if it's not defined? You get nil. What if it's not the right data? You get nil. Do I get errors/exceptions or whatever? No, absolutely not, you get nil... unless the application you're using with Lua with has a lib that handles that.
There are so many more issues I have with this lang, but honestly... Am I fucking missing something? Is this lang like actually super dooper awesome and I'm missing something? -- I can't not look at this language as just dumb and arrogant. -- It's literally a language where you have to manage and remember ALL conceivable state at ALL times.11

Fuck Banks and fuck online Banking
Fuck you for not supporting real 2FA
Fuck you for having such shitty bloated bullshit Websites and online services
Fuck you for taking forever to transfer money
Fuck you for not having public APIs Fuck you for so many uncountable reasons.
And most of all Fuck you for constantly trying to fuck me. I FUCKING HATE BANKS SO FUCKING MUCH.
I hope so much that there'll be a decentralised uncontrollable anonymous and digital currency in the future. Something like Cryptos (like BTC or ETH) but without all the major Problems they have now.
I wish there was a hell Banks could go to. I want to see them burn and suffer so fucking much not even the worst medieval torture methods are enough to satisfy me.40
Sorry if this is a bad read, pretty new to devRant and writing in general.
I can't help but think and think of how much I fucked up my opportunities to completely change my life/financial status a couple of times. Damn.
A few years back (it was 2009, I think) I was playing Diablo II online, helped some random guy get through the hard levels. Normally, in such situation the lower lvl player allowed the higher level guy to grab the valuable boss loot; however this time the guy except sharing the loot with me asked me if I want his spare 2000 bitcoin. I asked if it's of any value, he said "not really".
I said I'd contact him later, when I figure out how this thing works and how to setup a wallet.
Guess what, I was too lazy and forgot about this thing completely. Then we lost contact.
In 2010, I made a comeback to bitcoin, but instead of buying it, I downloaded the bitcoin client, the blockchain (it was 800 mb in size, I remember) and have been contributing by running it on my PC for like a year.
Finally decided to get it ~3 years ago. Bought 2.5 BTC for 400$.
Was holding it, until I fell for the "free OmniseGO" scam and somebody stole them off me.
All of these can't get out of my head.
I visit coinmarketcap literally every hour to see how much I could have now. My girlfriend, friends, family, all fail to cheer me up. I still made a pretty good deal buying 5.5 ETH for 45$ and thats like 2500$ soon, its nice but this much I can make by coding
Shit, what do I do to stop being stressed except for seeing a psychologist.
May my failure make you smile today4
Now that my math posts have failed to garner the anger they formerly did, we here at Wisecrack Studios, like all teams of people completely out of ideas, have come up with a brilliant never-before-tried concept to bring fresh shitposts to your pocket-telescreen this fine year of 2020.
We present to you the DevRant shitposter census!
Yes we pride ourselves in our quality bait and bullshit here at WS. Founded in [previous year a long long time ago], we focus on craftmanship, tradition, and doing it right. Our bait is loved the world over for "it's fresh flavor", "so good, it's like you're abusing heroin right along with the company employees!'
And now, you too get to participate and choose your very own bullshit!
You could say we may have invented a totally new word just to describe it: crowdsourcing!
Isn't it just *brilliant*.
Here is Wisecrack's "Private Select" census, of only the most choice *premium* finely-aged shitpost ideas for this [current year].
Please, please, one vote per customer!
* Overly pixelated memes (obviously not) blatantly ripped and automatically uploaded via shitty selenium scripts
* Real life hijinxs, trolling shitty companies hiring processes for fun at their expense!
* DevRantCon now with 100% more orgies. Reserve your kickstarter ticket today.
* Disappointing vaporware announcements that take ten minutes to read and build your excitement up only to crush it before your very eyes like a child's first lego build in the hands of an angry nd merciless andre the giant disappointed by the craftmanship of a five year old.
* A livestream of a monkey on an actual typewriter, with a btc betting pool each time an actual word is typed, along with a $5 "shock the monkey" button to spice things up a bit
(our lawyers are informing us this may or may not be illegal in some or all nations. We'll get back to you when sealand responds with our request about their laws on unnecessary animal cruelty. )
* Video conference with devrants creators where we all play "I've never" that doesn't end until at least one person passes out black drunk.
* Weekly comedy write ups with jokes (not obviously) blatantly stolen from cards against humanity
* HipsterRants: why your favorite [thing - game, music, movie, book] sucks, and why I hate you for liking it.
* Cool new projects by devranters and our merciless breakdown of why each one is pure, unadulterated shit, everything that was done wrong, and why you should personally be ashamed for using it.
* SadRants: cancer, meth abuse, homelessness, how we'll all die at the end, and how the sun will one day turn into a giant ball of fire that will consume the earth and leave no trace that anyone ever existed, and nothing we do will ultimately matter.
* HappyRants: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) oh yeah, you feeling it now mr krabs?
* Technical breakdowns that are completely wrong, utterly incompetent, intentionally misleading, and wildly upvoted by people who are unfamiliar.
Vote for your favorite topic/idea today! or even submit your own for our 'consideration'!
Clickbait, now in technicolor!9
So I was hacked, this guys encrypted all my files and asked me to pay BTC to decrypt it. They even changed my wallpaper and gave me put instructions on all my folder directories on how to pay and recover my files12
I hate it when companies got 5 payment options while 4 of them basically lead to a credit card payment.
I'm renting some servers from Vultr and they recently changed something in their payment protocol. Now you need a credit card, even while paying with PayPal, and I don't have a credit card. Using their BTC option doesn't work either since my wallet tells me they are using an incompatible payment protocol (error reason, address & amount) . There is not even a wallet address shown through their BTC checkout to which I could directly send the amount to. You need to open the website on the device your wallet is stored on and then make the payment (so no address is required from their side). Account management is taking a look at it now, I got very quick replies back from their support but this is the first time I'm having such an issue with them.
Oh well, hope they won't take down my servers in the meantime.2
I invested 1000 rs in bitcoins today. My 1st 0.002289 BTC 😁😇. (1000 yet to invest). Lol its a small amount i k.2
so guys, I am going to ask you about something I am totally new on it.
what do you think about crypto currency mining? cam I do it using just my PC, if I can what is the estimate benefits?
do you advice me to proceed with this thing.15
Something that irks me is the misinformation that the DOGE proof of work is less complex and more energy saving than the BTC proof of work.
DOGE: SCRYPT (SHA-256 + Some additional steps and higher memory consumption)19
Fuck you Coinbase.
I was about to make a really nice 20% intraday trade and the platform went down at the very moment I was buying back. This morning BTC & ETH rates were above the ones I sold off. Fuck you Coinbase.11
One would expect that bitcoin isnt used that much anymore. But one would be correct. It is getting slowly replaced by other currencies as the one and glorious Monero. I was today doing my fair share of exchanging to get hella good prices and well as one does make some money also but then i saw the fucking fee for bitcoin transaction. 0.0005BTC
Do you know how much that is ?
I aint giving someone 3.5 for 1 fucking transaction. So i used second exhange where the prices were finally OK and i could get XMR exchanged for BTC instantly and get myself some sweet money.
We really need to get monero up there. Cause its private, secure to the point you cannot see how much was in 1 transaction without key. WOW.
Also the fee is so much better.3
Discus always before how much ur client have to pay! Worked round 3hrs each day on a range of 6 weeks (6d each week) on a gameproject. After i did my work i requested my money - all i got were 50€! Just fifty fucking euros for so many time! Good that the retards never got it launched because my client (is even a dev) never finished his work or whatever.
PS: Didnt got paid in BTC 🤐
PPS: it was about 2,5yrs ago 😎
What are your thoughts on crypto?
BTC is like up 50% in the past month. But XRP is crashing?
And then there's all the other variations like litecoins, doge, etc35
Is anyone here up for a long convoluted explanation of how exactly I predicted the last major btc peak/trough within just a couple hundred dollars?
There's actually a pretty precise reason it did what it did. Basically when china started tightening the screws, userbase fell along with price.
And when the price of an asset falls *with* userbase or ownership numbers, there is a delay in reevaluation, and therefore "current" market value doesn't accurately reflect true value.
I can show the math but again its convoluted. Has to do with userbase versus market cap.
Not a financial advisor fyi and I could be wrong.3
I wonder how many people use Bitcoin as their main currency...
From the SO 2018 dev questionnaire!1
Not a Rant,
I'm just searching freelancers! I used this site when I was just starting my career. I still have the stickers on my (now old) Notebook I got 2016-ish for having... I don't know how many likes on here (user:chrome).
If one of you knows something about: Laravel, PHP, Bitcoin Core, BTC LN, Ads, Marketing, Social Media, CSS, HTML or JS - hit me up!
Maybe just send a mail to: firstname.lastname@example.org
I would love to find a team on this site. I hope the Community is still well. Back in the day it was really fun to watch this site grow.

Hey DevRant fam :-) hope everyone is doing very well wherever you may be!, i'm currently on my uni break for roughly 3 or so weeks which is fabulous, now i do not have much experience with finance or crypto-currencies!, but i'd like to do something a bit different.
This is something i'd hope to put onto my portfolio, so my idea is something on the lines of a stock market simulator BUT with Crypto currencies, i've been asking people around uni but no help unfortunately!.
So its very similar to a stock market simulator app if you look at things like "Investopedia Stock market simulator" its very much the same concept. The user has x amount of USD or AUD (as an example) and they can buy BTC or Ripple and it either goes up in price or down :-).
So guys that's something id like to create :D i definitely know its difficult and i'm not so sure on how to start :-). If its possible to get some advice on how to start i'd greatly appreciate it!.
Hope you have a wonderful day/night where-ever you are!
(I apologize for rambling on)
Today Tornado Cash (TC) discord deleted, website deleted, devs got arrested.
Heres my question: although i believe TC didnt have any bad intentions in context of to help people launder money, how come the government can that easily shut down ANY crypto/nft if they really want to?
What exactly is "decentralized" here...?
TC was not made for money laundering, just like onlyfans wasnt made to be pornographic website - the Users are the ones who determined its fate.
If TC had a way to block illegal transactions, then that would be a web2 company and not web3.
And now when TC doesnt block illegal transactions in order to remain "decentralized" and "anonymous", they got arrested and their system got shut down. Ironically, so much for "anonymity" and "decentralization"...
This means the government is able to shut down absolutely any and every crypto, including BTC if they really wanted to. The question now remains is: why are they letting it roll and not shut down the whole of crypto?
What if crypto was a part of the governments plan for a future financial world where they can control, freeze, block or shut down our finances with a click of a button just as easily as they arrested TC founders today?8
I feel like I'm quickly developing a Bitcoin addiction. I've figured out how to backup my wallet to 'The cloud's by saving a file to Google drive in case I lose or spike my phone. Tested it out, it works. Got like 98% faith that the crypto is safe as far as not being able to access it like the dogecoin that's sitting on a phone that I still need to repair the screen of. First it was 20$, then 40$ in the BTC ATM. Felt like magic.
My question is:. Is you're opinion of me stupid?13
Hello Mr. Internet,
I just wanted to ask if someone knows an "easy" solution for a Bitcoin Cashback system. We're using Amazon, Ebay & AWIN as affiliate Partners.
If you could build something like this, I would love to speak to you!
At the moment we're updating our DB (11 Million Products) and we'll include a better Search. Right after that we would like to add an Accountsystem + BTC Cashback.
I used DevRant back in 2016. Is someone out here?9
!dev but rant/q
How fucking hard can it be to create a BTC transaction to override an unconfirmed one. Tried two tools but the resulting transaction gets rejected by the network.
Does anyone know one that works and is maybe even automated by any chance? Maybe I can try it if its still unconfirmed when I get home.1
