"This is not an application: it's a bug pretending to be an application." (This comment was left as an app review on Google Play Store)3

More like the most obvious thing I accidentally left OUT of an application without thinking about it.
"application seems advanced/cool/working! Oh by the way how do I log out?"
😐😮😧😅😰😭16 -
Once we were going to present a web service to governmental firm. All is going well so far and my boss asks me to host the web application the day before the presentation.
I hosted it and all was good with demo production tests, but I had a bad feeling.
While it was running on our server, I also ran it locally with a reverse proxy just in case.
* Meeting starts *
* Ice broken and down to business *
"And now our developer will run the demo for you..."
* Run the demo from my laptop to double check --> 500 Internal Server Error *
Holy shit!!!
* Opens reverse proxy link on my laptop. Present demo during meeting. Demo works like a charm. *
Firm representative: "Great! Looking forward to go live."
*Our team walks out*
GM: "Good job guys"

What's the point of these stupid questions? Do I really have to kiss some ass even before being hired?12

I saw this yesterday and thought it's kind of nice. Probably not everybody will understand it as it's German. But the level of creativity is definitely gratifying19

So far this month I applied for 15+ game development related jobs, and spent ages carefully crafting customized cover letters and resumes for each particular job. Didn't get as much as a "thank you for your application".
Then, for the one random job application I applied to on LinkedIn using my most generic resume, and no cover letter, I get a near instant response and an invitation to coordinate day/time for an interview in person. Wtf.
Anyway, hope I get the job, because I'm running out of food.12 -
"Please add a feature to check the user's internet connection before the application starts."
-- THIS IS A GOD DAMN WEB APPLICATION, YOU DUMB MORONS! Maybe I should add a feature next that checks for the user's computer being turned on or what? How about making sure the application isn't run when the power is out?!
Jesus fuck.14 -
Just inherited a web application, worst security ever, all it does is call an unsecured application that does an active directory call, verifies the user name exists and then grants the role that the username is assigned. That is it oh and if you can find your way into the admin panel anyone can edit anyone else's role.
Come to find out this application got the dev who designed it a promotion to lead.5 -
I FUCKING hate companies/startups/ANY WORK ENTITY that doesn't respond to job/internship applications , i don't care if it's a yes or a "your application is shitty and you are a shitty applier and there's thousands of appliers better than you" at least give me something to carry on with my internship search .
Even more hated are those who respond with a plethora of tests and don't answer back with results when you do them .7 -
Should you use webpack in your next front end application? Well heres one question to ask yourself to help you decide:
While developing your application, do you feel your application could benefit from the introduction of 14,372 impossible to understand errors, each requiring hours of research to debug ...
you do? well boy are you in luck!6 -

Finally after waiting on the dashlane team to make a linux version of their application, I got tired and made it into a desktop application in a semi-hacky using the Jade-Application-Kit from the manjaro team <3

So this happened when i was developing the iOS app for the company I work in. I was given half boiled code written by the previous employee to work on. The app was laid around a webview. Now in iOS, there are 2 kind of webviews, the UIWebView that works on all iOS versions, and the WKWebview that works only on iOS 8+.
The app was coded using UIWebview, I brouht that up with my boss, and he asked me to continue using it, even after I repeatedly informed him that the javascript engine of this webview is subpar and we could be better off with WKWebview. Fast forward to 12 weeks later. The application is ready and is given to the boss for testing. He runs the app and plays around for a day. The next day, he comes up to me and says "The javascripts aren't working that well, can we switch to WKWebview instead?" In the inside of my mind, I have already murdered him three times, on his face, however I say, "We can look into it."
So, basically I rewrote the whole app with WKWebView, retargetting the app to iOS 8+.
The app is tested and launched. Everythings fine. AND NOW, he comes up to me and says, "Can we switch it back to UIWebView? We really need the app to be universally available on the app store and 6% of our customers, still use iOS7."
You know how I felt and what I had to do. Goes without saying, that the application is available on the AppStore, targetting iOS 7+.
TLDR, iOS Dev, given half boiled code with UIWebview, tells boss about WKWebview (iOS8+) and advantages. He asks me to continue UIWebView. App developed, 12 weeks. He comes up and points to problems and asks me to retarget with WKWebview. Developed and App launched.
He comes up and says, we need iOS7+, retarget the app to UIWebview. FML.7 -

My Task: Create a new application in a custom C#-Framework, to replace screens from the old application.
Me:Fine.
The old application has a Java Frontend.
Me:Fine.
The old application has an Oracle-DB.
Me:Fine.
The old application has its logic fully on the DB.
Me:What ??
You cannot connect to the DB via ODBC.
Me:But why ???
You cannot use external libraries, just our framework.
Me: For what are you thinking i can use to call the functions on the DB
You have to use a custom connection-bus which uses JDBC
Me:Fine.
This connection-bus cannot call SQL Statements and return the result.
Me:WTF, how should i get the data out of the Database ?
We don't know find a way.
Me:Ahh fuck off.3 -
Recently applied at a local company. Webform, "enter some details and we'll get back to you"-like.
Entered my details, hit submit, lo and behold "Error 503 - something went wrong on our end".
I was just baffled. It's a well-established IT company and they can't even get their application form to work?
So I'm sitting there in the debugger console, monitoring network stuff to see if anything is weird. I obviously hit submit some several more times during that.
Eventually I give up.
In the night my phone wakes me up with a shitton of "we've received your application and will review it..." emails.
Yeah they didn't get back to me.2 -

We are developing a single page APPLICATION which will be embeded into another single page APPLICATION using iframes (!?!?!?!). The embedded SINGLE PAGE application has POPUPS (browser instances, not UI popups) opened. Every app contains at least 75% of the other apps and they do not share common code. Furk it! App sounds like a small icon on your mobile phone to take a selfie putting a dog filter to post for everyone to see! You call this tool just an "APP"? May Zeus forgive this blasphemy.

Senior group project in college.
When you decide to meet up and one member doesn't show up at first meeting.
So I sent an email about the research I did on the feasibility of the project and how to implement a core requirement. 2 days later & no response yet..
Why do I think I'm gonna be the one the pull off the application by myself & then have to put name of people who have no idea how I got it to work..8 -
Applied for a job at Canonical.
Was waiting for an e-mail response to know if I would move up the interview process or not.
Got a standardized e-mail to evaluate their hiring methods and how fast it was.
In that standardized e-mail there was this question:
"Do you know why you didn't move up on in the application process?"
Fuck. The e-mail should have something saying "Spoiler alert".6 -
Android is gonna be the death of me. Any fucking idea you have is impossible to implement, because libraries with clear documentation are deprecated. If a library is not deprecated, however, it has documentation written by a fucking caveman who thinks it's extremely self explanatory on how to use something that is extremely application specific. Spent hours looking at Google example code that crashes almost immediately after execution, what a joke.3

Me: *wrote a detailed resume with my responsibilities, achievements, and showcase some of my projects in each work history*
Clueless interviewer: Can you tell me more about your work history?
Me: *happily walks him through my resume*
Clueless interviewer: all good! You pass the prescreening interview. Here’s an “assessment” that will require you to record yourself in a video answering the same questions I asked you. Also please submit the .mp4 file before your initial interview tomorrow where you will answer the same questions again.
Me: …
Why these HRs and outsourcing companies love to waste the applicants time? Apparently the prescreening, initial, and video interview with these HRs are fucking different. Just let me talk to the company your representing, have them give me a technical exam and move on from there??? Jaysus7 -

Do you guys have a idea how I can call my new snippet manager application? The application allows you to save code and URLs to view Inside of the application. Also the application is highly customizable supporting 42 coding Languages and over 42 Themes. Currently its named: "SNIPR". But i would like a Name thats not directly connected to the application and what it does. Maybe you guys have some ideas? Because im not that creative😀😀👌

1. take a web application working in somebody computer since 4 years with tons of features.
2. Believe that the application is the future and solve brilliantly a general market need.
3. multiply income of current only customer by 10: you are going to be rich.
3. start to install 2, 3 customers.
4. discover the application is shit. Doesn't solve well the problem. Functionalities are different for each customer
5. discover that customers are willing to pay 1/10th of the original customer
6. quickly reingeneer the application to a multitenant cloud application, because with 3 customers and different versions you are already in deep shit
7. keep giving away the application for free to flagship customers. With a lot of customisation developed for free.
8. reach 200 customers in 5 years and still no break even, but lot of debts
9. resort to financial tricks to keep the company going
Luckily money are not mine. They could be recovered.
Unluckily the time spent was mine. It couldn't be recovered
Hope that the application will finally crash so that I can move on to the next thing: retirement in a mental asylum -

Job Application Rant #1
So, today I found a great job posting on Linkedin. I was excited and created a unique cover letter and my resume and applied. The job was in another country and I need EU work visa for the job.
The contact for the post was also founder of the company. I asked him, via Linkedin, that if they would sponsor the visa for me if everything went good.
He replied to me that " yes we do sponsor visas, but you have only 3 years of programming experience..."(three dots included). I was like wtf, did I miss important part of post about experience minimum limit or something. I would not like to be spam-applier, guy who applies without reading requirements etc.
I checked requirements again there is no minimum experience limit. Anyways, I thanked him for swift response but damn bruh, do not put unlockable requirements to job posts, so someone's dream would not be crushed.3 -
I hate that clients think the most important thing for a demo is UI. Working Application > Nice looking application with no functionality1
-
So, this incident happened with me around 2 years ago. I was pentesting one of my client's web application. They were new into the Financial Tech Industry, and wanted me to pentest their website as per couple of standards mentioned by them.
One of the most hilarious bug that I found was at the login page, when a user tries logging into an account and forgets the password, a Captcha image is shown where the user needs to prove that he is indeed a human and not a robot, which was fair enough to be implemented at the login screen.
But, here's the catch. When I checked the "view source" option of the web page, I saw that the alt attribute of the Captcha image file had the contents of the Captcha. Making it easy for an attacker to easily bruteforce the shit outta the login page.
You don't need hackers to hack you when your internal dev team itself is self destructive.4 -
The moment someone says Representational State Transfer Application Programming Interface instead of RESTAPI.

HR departments really really annoy me
Firstly, they take an age and a half to respond to job applications. Now I understand that there are multiple steps in choosing a candidate, gotta look through their cover letter, resume etc, maybe talk to a lead somewhere, but 4 FREAKING MONTHS? SERIOUSLY?
HOWEVER, if they DO ACTUALLY REPLY then that makes them better than most HR departments. If I've gone to the effort of filling all of your application forms with strange questions in, and I've written you a tailor-made cover letter, the LEAST I expect is a simple copy pasta email saying setting like "Sorry, but you don't match what we're looking for". That's all. Don't even need to include my name. 100% copy and paste. 10 extra seconds in the 4 months it took you to read half a page of text and some nicely formatted bullet points
So incredibly annoying1 -
Why the fuck do i need to propose try-catch to an contractor, so he can fix his application, because its crashing if the input is non-conform to the specs?
Oh and before you ask. The application is a application that processes and sanitizes invoices.8 -
Why does it seem like every application these days needs to restart after performing any kind of update or installation? It's even more annoying when you just don't restart then launch the application and everything works fine...

A banking application helps businesses attract new customers, increase audience loyalty, and improve the quality and speed of service delivery. The problem is an application that cannot handle workload no matter how many servers you throw at it.2 -
The system I'm developing is depending on an image generating application, that is generating thousands of unique images per day. The kicker? After 4 - 5 months of learning webD, I am trying to build my first fullstack web application (simple chat one ).
My stack :
FRONTEND:
Vue.js + Materialize
Backend:
Express ( handling routes )
Mongoose/MongoDB ( Database )
Socket.io ( web sockets for real time connection )
JWT
Had dreamt of this 2 months ago where I built a basic front end using html and css, and now porting it to Vue is like a breeze.
Wish me luck and let's hope it doesnot become one of the unfinished projects. ( My university semester exams are coming up , would have to complete this as fast as possible ). I am also learning DSA + STL and aim to learn basic python syntax before holidays so that I can focus my time on ML during them. It's so fucking overloaded that I have my doubts ::((4 -

When you start a new job and you inherit a steaming pile of shit that NEEDS to integrate with a completely separate application but after repeatedly telling your manager his requests aren’t possible, he denies it and says it is possible.
Some context. They have an old application written in MVC. They want a new application written in react. They want all the old functionality to integrate with the new functionality. I don’t just mean render different views based on the route, I mean they want both applications to integrate seamlessly to create a new application. Not to mention this new application is completely different to the old one and has requirements that aren’t even compatible with the old application.
Also. I got into trouble today for completing the sprint in 2 days and starting on user stories (that were in the sprint, not the backlog). Apparently we’re not allowed to showcase the product until the sprint ends and we go through our retrospective/demo. LMAOOOO -

I hate application launchers.
When i start an application, i WANT IT TO START. What i don’t want is your bullshit, custom, logo and splash screen infested piece of shit launcher to start up, with the only option of loading a project or file up, or worse than that, when the only option is to start the fucking application, which should have already happened.
Also, splash screens. Fuck your 5second branded splash screen when your cocksucking application has the fucking loading footprint of MS Notepad.2 -

How fitting because that just happened today: MOTHERF*CKING Tomcat.
TL;DR:
Tomcat sucks with client side routing (e.g. in angular2).
How hard can it be to provide a web/application server which is properly configurable?
I lost a whole day by trying to get an angular2 project deployed in Tomcat.
It's not that I could not manage to deploy it. But that you need to put all the files in the ROOT folder if Tomcat so that your JavaScript files can be found is the first dumb part.
But that's not enough.
There seems to be no way in Tomcat, short of writing to XML config files and including one jar library, to disable routing go a webapp. And you need to do this when you have a single page application with client side routing.
But yeah, dear boss, I get the part where Tomcat is lightweight, easy to use and does most of the work for you: when you do not use it.
As a side note, so that nobody thinks I have a grudge against the Apache guys: I see the advantages of a Tomcat if you have multiple webapplications written in Java which you need to manage our if you use it as an embedded application server.
But there are just some occasions where a plain old Apache Webserver is better suited.
Another side note: if I just embarrassed myself because those are settings which can be easily applied feel free to tell me 😉2 -

What stack would you suggest for such an application?8 -
The concept of designing and building a testable application is apparently a very alien one to my colleagues.
1. The application cannot be used without gigabytes of data.
2. The application must be fully connected to all external systems at all times.
3. Convention over configuration is unheard of, so if you manage to achieve the above, it still takes hours to set up the damn thing.
Apes. -

Odd question, but it's something I should probably know. How early should I be looking/applying for summer internships in development? I'm still in high school, and need something useful to do next summer.3 -
Welp. I think I witnessed a new job application hack. Someone listed my team’s general engineering email address for their Employee Referral.
That email address is listed publicly, but I’m pretty sure no one on my team told the applicant to list it as a referral contact. I suspect someone got the email from a Slack workspace. I had posted a job listing, in a threaded comment someone had complimented my employer’s public API, and I shared our engineering email and said we’d love to see what he builds.
It looks like someone else from that Slack saw this and decided to list the engineering email as an employee referral. I get that employee referral can mean different things to different people and it might be someone who’s new to job searching and doesn’t know better.
For my employer’s online application, an employee referral requires a name and email address for the employee. I’m curious what the applicant listed for the employee referrer’s name. Wonder if it was my name. If it is, guess I have to give my manager a heads up and tell him that I do not know this applicant.
This occurrence is a new one for me and I don’t think it’s happened to us before. And it’s not really a good tactic to get a resume read at my workplace. Where I work, my manger reviews the resumes and tells HR who he wants to set up calls with. It’s not HR or an ATS that screens resumes and sends them to my manager. -
I can't stress this enough: Fuck Workday as an ATS. Nobody wants to create a new Workday account with a new password for every company that they want to apply to. Like which moron PM at Workday thought this was a good idea? Not to mention Workday's terrible resume parser, which requires you to essentially manually enter your entire resume because the parser only picks up the first word of each job description on your resume (and even then it puts that one word in the wrong field.)

I am working on a task given to me by a huge company to test my skill.
I am applying for a junior position.
I am doing it by myself of course but I googled a bit and the problem is called job shop scheduling or multiprocessor scheduling (not sure which one it actually is).
The topic is a bit altered (logistics) but it stil is the same problem.

I am currently developing an application, using Electron, Vue and FeathersJS. My plan is to make it open-source, and I'm wondering _when_ one should make a project open-source? Like, should it be near complete, or does it not really matter? One of the things I'm having trouble to be energized about is writing the css, and it's a bit of a mess right now, which is why I'm asking now. I have never made an open-source project myself before, so tips are very welcome. Thanks5

Anyone know where I can get a tombstone made for an application? Finally got the powers that be to agree to retire an application that I have been asking about for over a year.

I made "glass holder" application for Android. The glass wich I put on the phone can change color too. It's only available in Hungary. Do you want to have it? If the answer is yes, I translate it to English and publish everywhere.3

Question for the hiring managers out there: When reviewing applications for an open role, what specifically stands out to you about an applicant? (Assuming that the ATS gods don't just automatically filter the application out.)
Is it their achievements at previous companies? (Ex. Boosted ARR by 200% or decreased monthly churn by 30%)
Is it their career trajectory?
Is it their resume writing abilities?
Is it their education/certification credentials?
Is there some degree of "brand shopping" involved? For example, does seeing an average resume from a former Google employee with 2 YOE get you more excited than a well-written resume from a candidate with 7 YOE who worked at a lesser-known company?
I suppose much of this depends on the role and its needs.
Just given the market right now, I'm curious how hiring managers are making selections from their undoubtedly vast pool of candidates. I've heard that almost any job positing now is getting 500+ applicants within the hour, but with the caveat that 490 of those 500 applicants are completely unqualified (Like a Shift Manager at Chipotle who worked an IT help desk summer internship applying for a Senior Software Engineer role.)
Ultimately, what aspects of an applicant combined with their background and resume makes you say "Wow, this might be the one" while reviewing applications for a role?3 -
Anybody else considered the mass amounts of stress the devRant devs went through, knowing for a lot of their users, it's our jobs to create these types of applications and so they're gonna be judged?
But on the bright side, it turned out amazingly. -
Started building an app for school to do something with indoor localization. We must use Crownstones (smart outlets, google it) for the project but in order for indoor localization to work we need 4 Crownstones. School only gave us 2. :/

Most people who talk about language performance are just repeating what they heard from others.
For 98% of use cases, Python or Ruby, for example, are more than fine for running production systems at scale.
Also, a language does not necessarily guarantee speed/performance if you write shit code.
I've seen a properly written Python application perform better than a Java application.
I'd love to stop having this debate with folks every time.12 -
You start a new project. Do you:
1. Code the application first and worry about naming, branding, and graphic design once the core is finished.
2. Name and brand the application first, get all the graphic assets ready, then worry about coding the core.4 -
Started working on our rails application today. Haven't used ruby before :( and there is not even a single line of comment in the entire status application!! At least a comment like "Auto-generated please don't touch" would have helped :/1

Has anyone built a p2p data/video-stream application between a native java peer and a web application? I walked through some really promising webrtc tutorials, but it seems that webrtc is for browsers only.2

Join and Smart Recruiters is really trying very hard to overtake Workday as the worst job application platform.
Join has the effrontery to send me reminder emails to fill in the same details already contained in the resume I uploaded. What the fuck is wrong with these people?1 -
I’ve been trying to work smarter and not harder.
I’ve been applying to internships with my cover letter and resume.
My cover letter is pretty generic so I only need to change the company name and company position for each application.
Used to do this all manually through google docs but I just wrote a cool script
Using bash, I ask for the company name and position, and then I just generate and compile a latex version of my cover letter with those parameters updated.
Then, the pdf of my cover letter is combined with the pdf of my resume.
After that, the pdf of my application goes into a directory in my career folder so I have a record of it.
This has saved me so much time lol I’m happy I took the time to figure this out2 -
Anyone actually had a decent amount of success with earning from adverts in an android application? What was your strategy for doing this and if you want, could you share the application?
