Summary

Application(s) that remind you to take care of your hands

Description
Most of us sit almost every day in front of a computer coding, writing, maybe even playing games, which puts stress on our hands. After some time this could cause permanent hand pain, which could have been avoided with regular pauses and hand-exercises. Dr. Levi Harrison aka. gaming doctor uploads videos with hand-exercises for gamers, but everybody can profit from regular hand exercises, regardless of their occupation. The only problem concerning these (at least in my opinion) are: - remembering to do them regularly - remembering how to do them This is why I thought of this project. After userdefined period the user should be notified to take care of his hands and also show what excercises he should do (preferably Illustrations). Right now the only things I thought of are apps for smartphone and smartwatch. If there are other ways to tell if the user has been working with his hands, I would preferably also implement those. I would like to hear everyone's thought and appreciate every bit of interest. Also thank you for reading this far and also sorry in case my english was hard to read. UPDATE: So, after a little fight with the Android SDK and git I was able to push a Prototype. Whoever wants to take a look at the code is more than welcome!

    I'm interested!

    @cr78 Well, that was fast
  • 1
    I would like to have a crack at it. :)
  • 4
    @bhedia Tomorrow (in about 5 hours) I'll add a github link. It will basically be an (ugly) Timer for android that notifies you, when you should take a break. Nothing more and nothing less, but You'll get the general idea
  • 1
    @Awlex Awesome. I'll do my best.
  • 2
    Sounds great!
  • 2
    That's great I'm interested
  • 1
    If somebody wants to take a look at the code, I did my best to make it as less cancerous as possible.

    Unfortunately I can't say the same about the UI/UX
  • 1
    @Awlex i'm good with ui design, will look at it tomorrow (in about 16 hours)
  • 0
    @cr78 I'll look forward to it
  • 1
    @ryanmhoffman @Awlex

    1. Planned, but I'll have to learn a good way of achieving this.

    2. On phone can make it trigger daily at the same time. I don't know exactly how it will be on a desktop, but if possible I'd like to it when one or more user-defined programs are launched and listen if the user inputs, to determine when he should take a break

    I should be able to have a prototype added to the releases (if github stops trolling me)

    Also, thank you for your interest!

    I'm not experienced in this, so I might be talking outta my ass here, but what about an add on for editors that listens to the inpit (with a threshold for a certain period of time given)?
  • 1
    I need to check that myself, but if it's possible to connect to multiple editors/IDEs that way, I'll definitely try to
  • 1
    @rewert So, I've sone some reaearch. It should be possible to create a plugin for most editors/IDEs that tell the main program, that the user has done some input like writing.

    But while reseaeching I've come to the conclusion that it's too restricted, because you'd have to write a plugin for each program you want to monitor.

    Instead querying the currently opened program and listening to raw input would allow to categorize the program (by stress level) and pop a notification sooner or later depending on the stresslevel the program inposes on the hand

    I may point out that most people use Skype... So in order to get desktop notifications I could make a Skype bot to send you a message to do your hand exercises.
  • 0
    Or if the target audience for this is gamers I could make a Discord bot. (FYI discord is an application like Skype but meant for gamers)
  • 1
    @404NotFound1 Not sure if where I'll need it. For windows 10 I could simply post a push notification.

    Maybe for older versions And other operating systems
  • 2
    Happy hand breaks mad me think of something else 😁
  • 1
    @Kryptic0 Every break is a happy break 😅😉
  • 1
    I am also ready to take this project forward
  • 1
    @Awlex for desktop we can make crime extension
  • 2
    @dikshaa42 Crime extension?

    I really hope you meant Chrome extension 😅

    But depending that, I look at my comment from e days ago, to see how I want to do it.

    I'll try to make a flowdiagram asap for better understanding
  • 1
    @dikshaa42 welcome to devRant!

    Btw, do you know me ?
  • 0
    @Awlex yes , it is a chrome extension..
  • 0
    @CozyPlanes thnku :) I don't know anyone
  • 1
    @Kryptic0 My innocence prevented me from realizing that you were talking about "Fortran Assembly Programming" 😶

    Well done

    What is the occupation for?

    I'll try to help, see if I have time... ;-;

    I'd like to join.

    Very interested in using this.

    Can't commit to committing anything but if you have a slack/discord group then I'll you can pick my brain. My fields of expertise are, in order: PHP, CSS, JS, Mysql, linux, bash, cron, React

    Good idea.
    However I'd suggest starting doing deadlifts regularly.
    - it has pretty much cured my carpal tunnel syndrome.

    I can help, I don't know Kotlin but I'm a full stack Android developer and I can also help with the desktop version in Java.

    My 2ct comment
    Don't just do a "one task" app. Hands are important yes, but it would be nice to add posture reminders too. General stretching, take a walk, drink water etc... I think it should be more about reminders about improving a Dev lifestyle than just hand health reminder

    @Jop- Why not just use ear buds instead of a surround sound headset...there's an entire extra layer of control gained from mouse-based movement in FPS; so much so that in games like Dust 514 devs have to nerf keyboard/mouse players fine-accuracy controls.

    And then you have games like eve online or really any mmo where you get a big hearty FUUUCCK THAT to the idea using a controller.
  • 0
    @Jop- I've got a great D-pa.. forget it
  • 1
    @Jop- I had a Logitech g930, which had the "surround" feature. In particular, left 4 dead 2 made it super important to use audio to detect enemies. I noted a huge downtick after that piece of Logitech craftmanshit broke and I switched to a steelsseries headset without the feature.

    as much as I hate to admit it, it felt like having eyes in the back of my head. If only the things lasted longer than 13 months
  • 0
    @Jop- Nice, I'll have to try that. What about a set of cornerstore ear buds?
  • 0
    Measure keys typed and then break at x number actually I could probably bodge something like this together in autohotkey but having an app and stuff would be a lot cooler
  • 1
    As i person that has problems with Carpal tunnel syndrom and hand strains i really appreicate this. Looking forward to its progress
  • 1
    So, how's it going forward?
  • 0
    @PrivateGER the repo is still empty.
  • 1
    @Gianlu oh
  • 1
    @Awlex I might be a little late, but I think what you are/were trying to make already exists. Workrave
  • 1
    As an idea, what of the phone detected inactivity.

    If it senses that you are still for a certain amount of time it could turn on the timer or ask if you are doing an activity with your hands.

    Coupled with a quiet hours setting this could be an effective way of deducting activity.

    The idea of a desktop app/plugin wouldn't work for me as work wouldn't allow such an app to be installed 😿.

    You could create a chatbot integration.
    e.g. telegram bot api

    Or just implement browser push notifications. This is way more practical than downloading an extra app or install a desktop application.
