Got called anti-social because I don't use social networks and rather talk to people.
I am not sure how to feel about this.19 -
Last year, my company sent me to India to coordinate stuff.
Me, to my wife: "They've chosen me because they trust my social skills."
Her: "OMG, what is the rest of the company like?!"
LOL.. :-)3 -
Wikipedia says that a nerd/geek lacks social skills. They should see this amazing community, thanks DevRant :)10

My school blocks all social media websites, so i made a small social media site with chat and going to run it localy on my laptop and they cant block it :D44

*joins devrant*

*all friends use facebook messenger*
*quietly installs again*

I used to take pride in not being addicted to facebook, twitter or other social media. Then devrant came along. Damn you devrant!!!1

You what's been pissing me off this week. The press and social media coverage of this Google guy's gender memo.
Almost every outlet has him saying:
"Women are inferior coders because of their biology"
He ABSOLUTELY does not say this anywhere. He only states that basically less women are attracted to the industry. He doesn't comment at all on the quality of the Women who do go into tech.
It astonishes me the utter ignorance of the media and how they can just print these ignorant errors / lies.
I would wager that most if not all of them never even read his memo.
I am really fucked off by this social media keyboard warrior driven world we live in.
Apparently we value freedom of speech and freedom of expression above all else... UNLESS you say something that pisses off the social media justice warriors. In that case you will be publicly crucified and your life / career will be destroyed.
The annoying thing is in this particular case he didn't even say what they are saying he did.43 -

So yesterday, literally just hours after i basically said on somebody elses rant "friends are overrated," i ran into a friend i havent seen in over a year and we ended up chatting for an hour after she gave me a ride home. I was in such a good mood after and I realized its the first socializing ive done outside of talking to work people or my partner in over a month. I like to spend most of my time alone, and since i discovered coding i try to spend every spare second writing code, but it turns out a social life is actually really important 😯😯3

!dev, more about social media
(and suicide)
ugh. social media.
recently a girl from a nearby high school committed suicide. it's sad, and i know what i'm about to say is going to be controversial, but i think it shouldn't be on social media. maybe her close friends posting it on instagram, to remember her, but that's it.
of course, that's not what happened. people started posting "❤️" on their snapchat stories, and theyre saying they are raising awareness. (they don't know this girl or why she did it or anything, they're just doing it because their friends did it.)
this awareness, is well, temporary.
the point of snapchat is that all the pictures go away, so why would they talk about suicide prevention on there? do they want suicide prevention to go away? this is most prevelent on snapchat, but on others, too.
trend after trend after trend.
thats what people turned her death into. a trend.
just like #prayforparis, and others, but on a local scale.
the problem with social media is that things go away. in a day or two it'll be like this never happened. she won't be remembered like she would if she weren't on social media.
i know what you're thinking. they're just "raising awareness." but for how long?
well, until another trend comes.
people disagreeing with me are extremely welcome to comment.
and any ideas on how this problem can be fixed?20 -
manager (not technical) : we need to add blocking feature to our social media.
me : adding block feature will take 2 weeks developing.
manager (not technical) : why it takes too much time to develop you can just delete the user from the database if a user blocked him.
me : hahahaha ... just ... delete ...
manager (not technical): ...
me : hahahhahahhaha.....

Saw my GitHub project shared on social media. WTF? Guess what the thumbnail is everytime it's shared. Why does GitHub use my fucking face? Fork You!
**changing avatar...**4 -
Just bumped into this app on Play Store yesterday.
I've never really felt so addicted to any social network before.
I can't seem to put my phone down. And if I do, I find myself coming back to it!9 -
The head of the software department of a company I did an internship at once said:
'the stereotype that programmers sit in a dark room all day with empty pizza boxes on their desks is wrong. They are very social and communicate a lot'
Me: yeah, for sure ...4 -
So I was studying for a test using a quizlet my social studies teacher made, and I came across this gem. 99% sure my social studies teacher didn't read what it said/understand what it means.9

Removed my Facebook account about Month ago. Sister was pretty sad because I'm the one person she can tag in everything. Asked me why I deleted it and I told her it was because of privacy concerns. "Then why don't you make an end to end encrypted social network?". I'd actually consider this...11

Hey there!
Just joined DevRant, it's fucking amazing!!!
Where was this all my life! I HAVE BEEN FUCKING WASTING TIME ON THOSE SHITTY SOCIAL MEDIA APPLICATIONS.10 -
I go to techno hardcore parties. The volume is so loud that usually nobody speaks to you, but you can take pictures in a very crowded environment, so when you put them on Facebook people think you are a social person, while in the reality you talk more with your computer than with humans. :D11

!dev
After almost a year of watching and experimenting (and not wanting to believe), I’ve learned something about the people i work with:
They don’t consider ideas based on the idea’s own merit, nor does a good idea improve their views of the person proposing it. They instead give the idea merit based entirely on who proposed it. It’s backwards.
• If they like or revere someone, their ideas cannot be bad, and they are never questioned even if they don’t make sense.
• If they sort of like someone, but that person challenges someone they like more, the ideas are dismissed and picked apart, and sometimes even reworded by the group and then accepted, with credit then given to the group. The person is still seen as wrong.
• If they dislike someone, none of their ideas are good, or they’re ignored, or ridiculed for reasons such as stating what is (only now) an abundantly obvious good idea.
(There is some overlap from the execs, where they occasionally consider an idea for its merit and then restate it, which means the idea is now coming from an exec, and is therefore readily accepted. Occasionally the original person gets some credit for this.)
It also applies to pictures of food in the cooking channel. If people like you more, they like your food more, while a professional-looking plate from a social leper gets ignored.
It’s like office politics, but applies to virtually every aspect of company life instead of just promotions, requests, and project assignments. It’s like replacing common courtesy and reason with a social FICO score: your contributions are only acceptable if you agree with your coworkers, laugh at their jokes, etc. And if you appear to like the same music, have recently posted more pictures of tacos or brownies than usual, etc.? Well, you had better do that before suggesting something you actually care about.
It’s social credit.
And it’s stupid.39 -
My startup boss took away our teams chat because we needed to "let everyone see our conversations for context". i said that's more like paranoia. then he told us we had to use company portraits and logos on LinkedIn and Social Media. and to post company ads and links on social media at least once a day. im not a social media manager, im a programmer MF'r. is this normal?????11
-
After quit from Facebook and other social medias for 6 months, I think I found my place ! Thanks devRant !5
-
Uninstalled Whatsapp
Uninstalled Facebook
Uninstalled Instagram
Uninstalled Twitter
Don't use Snapchat
Didn't uninstall DevRant😁
Coz it is resourceful and fruitful conversations are not worth to be missed even during exam time!
Exams got me like this 😣
Btw Which social apps do you use on daily basis ? Just curious to know 😅43 -
HR Requirements:
- Must have an active social life with hobbies and interests outside work.
Dev Requirements
- Must have an active GIT hub profile to the point that you couldn't possibly have a social life5 -
I'm considering shutting down all my social media profiles. I can't be bothered with any of them especially since most of the social media platforms has a lot of nut heads. I'd rather be on devrant than any other social media platform.6
-
Today, at a dinner party, someone acted surprised when they discovered that I was an Integrations Engineer because (quote) "You look too normal for a Dev".
What the hell? Why do people always assume that who works at IT must live their whole life at a desk, wear glasses and have 0 social skills?10 -
App idea!
A normal social media app. But everytime a user taps on opposite gender's profile pic, it secretly records his face during that activity and then tweets that recording.

Me: I wanna talk to my friends!
Non-dev friends: hey! We're on facebook!/instagram
Dev-friends: Maybe slack? Telegram?
Others: Whatsapp! Skype!
Result: lots of social media apps and considering new friendships15 -
Devrant is the only Social Media interaction I have been using lately, rather than others. Every time I feel the urge to open other social media apps, I redirect my actions to Devrant.
-
I hate social functions.
Have to shave of my months long beard and dress up like a gentleman, too much effort imo.5 -
Hey, I had a question. How social are you all IRL?
I'll explain myself. IRL, I don't talk to anyone unless they talk to me (which I don't seek) for example. And regarding friends, I've never had more than one "buddy" each school year, unconsciously dropping them once we weren't linked by school anymore. There is only two people I have kept throughout the years and that I'd call friends, one of them is my girlfriend.
That being said, I know I'm especially asocial, but I'm curious how everyone is here :)
We often hear "Computer people don't have many friends blabla" but I'm curious about that ^^29 -
I just watched The Social Network and I'm so depressed that I'm through quarter of my life and haven't done anything significant yet.....😭😭9
-
SOMEONE PLEASE JUST TELL ME:
HOW DO I STOP BEING SO FUCKING AWKWARD!!!!!!!! Tell me please, i swear to you. My life would be so much better if i wasn’t so awkward and have social anxiety. Tell me what to do because i’m tired of it, i hate it so much.42 -
FB: once in a month
Twitter: only on notification
Gmail : twice in a day
devRant: whenever I unlock the mobile5 -
I unfriended every person at work on my Facebook except 2. I don’t know how I let my social media become so open to folks I work with. 😒3

As a person who spends 99.99% of his time at home if not at school programming, reading, and watching netflix, what can I do to develop my social skills?36

Disclaimer: Long tale of a tech support job. Also the wk29 story is at the bottom.
One time I was working tech support for a website and email hosting firm that was in town. I was hired and worked as the only tech support person there, so all calls came in through me. This also meant that if I was on a call, and another one came through, they would go straight to voice mail. But I couldn't hang up calls either, so, sometimes someone would take up tons of time and I'd have to help them. I was also the "SEO" and "Social Media Marketing" person, as well; managed peoples' social media campaigns. I have tons of stories from this place but a few in particular stick out to me. No particular order to these, I'm just reminiscing as I write this.
I once had to help a man who couldn't find the start button on his computer. When I eventually guided him to allowing me to remote into his computer via Team Viewer, I found he was using Windows XP. I'm not kidding.
I once had to sit on the phone with a man selling Plexus Easy Weight Loss (snake oil, pyramid scheme, but he was a client) and have him yell at me about not getting him more business, simply because we'd built his website. No, I'D not built his website, but his website was fine and it wasn't our job to get him more business. Oh yeah, this is the same guy who said that he didn't want the social media marketing package because he "had people to hide from." Christ.
We had another client who was a conspiracy theorist and wanted the social media marketing package for his blog, all about United States conspiracies. Real nut case. But the best client I've ever had because sometimes he'd come into the office and take up my time talking at me about how Fukushima was the next 911 and that soon it'll spill into the US water supply and everybody was going to die. Hell, better than being on the phone! Doing his social media was great because he wanted me to post clearly fake news stories to his twitter and facebook for him, and I got to look at and manage all the comments calling him out on his bullshit. It was kinda fun. After all, it wasn't _me_ that believed all this. It felt like I was trolling.
[wk29] I was the social media and support techie, not a salesperson. But sometimes I was put in charge _alone_ in front of clients for status meetings about their social media. This one time we had a client who was a custom fashion-type person. I don't really remember. But I was told directly to make them a _new_ facebook page and post to it every day with their hot new deals and stuff. MONTHS pass since I do that and they come in for a face-to-face meeting. Boss is out doing... boss things and that means I have to sit in with her, and for some fucking reason she brought her boyfriend AND HER DAD. Who were both clearly very very angry with me, the company, and probably life. They didn't ever say anything at first, they didn't greet me, they were both just there like British royal guards. It was weird as fuck. I start showing them the page, the progress on their likes goals, etc etc. Marketing shit. They say, "huh, we didn't see any of these posts at home." Turns out they already had a Facebook page, I was working on a completely seperate one, and then the boyfriend finally chimes in with the biggest fucking scowl, "what are you going to do about this?" He was sort of justified, considering this was a payed and semi-expensive service we offered, but holy shit the amount of fire in all three of them. Anyway, it came down to me figuring out how to merge facebook pages, but they eventually left as clients. Is this my fuck up? Is it my company's? Is it theirs? I don't know but that was probably the most awkward meeting ever. Don't know if it comes across through text but the anxiety was pretty real. Fuck.
tl;dr Tech support jobs are a really fun and exciting entry level position I recommend everybody apply for if they're starting out in the tech world! You'll meet tons of cool people and every day is like a new adventure.2 -
I just realised that devRant is a SOCIAL NETWORK. Me + being social = IncompatibleOperandsError:
Types 'Programmer' and 'Extrovert' cannot be combined.2 -
Rant about social media in general, including devRant.
I enjoy interacting with like minded people. What I do not enjoy is the whole degradation of the conversation at hand. Sooner or later, someone takes something the wrong way, addresses something this social network was not meant to address (it's devRant not Facebook), and the audience has a multitude of English as a #(rd/th/whatever) language human beings.
Accept that as the premise, and I think we could get along a lot better.
However commonly this fact is ignored. Understand the sentiment behind statements, not the statement itself. If any part of it is unclear, then request clarification.
Agree, disagree, civil debates one thing, but degrading the conversation to name calling or similar emotions only results in poor communication, useless emotions running high, and nothing gained.
</rant>3 -
For everyone happy to see Facebook getting negative PR, just remember, unless people decide that they are willing to pay a monthly subscription for social media, nothing is going to change long term.6

Watching the Social Dilemma. Interesting quote.
Anyone else seen it? or addicted to social media?
I'm wondering maybe because we're all tech... we sort of develop a natural immunity? or is it just me that has all social media apps' notifs turned off?
And rarely use social media... except devRant.22 -
*ahem*
You know how people say "you get the gist!", yeah?

I don't. 🤔
How can they expect me to GET http-colon-slash-slash-gist-dot-github-dot-com without the rest of the url?

Click on `Share on Facebook` button. But then discards it when u realize that no one will like it.2

Is there a way to disable the social media buttons and if not could that be built in?
I keep pressing the buttons by accident when I move my finger to the back button. And I cannot even use them because I dont have an account at those platforms.18 -
TIL the best way to “win” an argument on Twitter is to simply abandon the thread when people think you should answer for your “crime” of having a difference of opinion and they start bringing social justice nonsense into it as a replacement for logic. They’re going on and on about how you are obligated to reply to them to answer for your alleged “privilege” and your silence just makes them sputter with rage.8
-
A burden has been lifted off of me. The burden of social media. I hate it with every ounce of my soul(except twitter and devRant). The amount of time wasted it is unreal. Deleted my instagram last night and my snapchat this morning. It feels so good!!!!! Sure my classmates think I'm crazy but it is worth it. No negativity more time to focus, work and game. I think it is a huge win.6
-
Why have the majority of social networks decided that people using their service in the most basic way deserves a notification?
"Ooh, I have 3 notifications according to the app icon, they must be things that need my attention."
<opens app>
* In case you missed DickSlap's [tweet/post/other]
* RomanHelmet liked a [tweet/post/other] from SpaffMuncher
* MuffSnapper added a new photo
Why does that need a notification? That's just users using your app. That's what I expect when I open the app. I expect to see people posting things. This is going to make me start ignoring notifications in the same way I ignore emails marked as urgent.8 -
People who don't ++ OPs, nor comments or add anything of value on social media / thread.
Please.
What is your purpose but self projection?16 -
Our management pushes very hard to move most company communications to Facebook Workplace and I'm proud to say that after almost 2 years and with less than a month left here I still haven't made an account. I didn't fucking detox myself from social media to deal with this bullshit at work so that these greedy morons can pretend we're a 'communituh'.1
-
Fuck these super social media instagram influencer developers telling everyone watching their story that "everyone can be a programmer.". You can't. It's not only about syntax and a run button.16
-
So I noticed people are increasingly putting their preferred pronouns on their social media, email signatures, résumés, etc. I also noticed a certain amount of praise gets ladled onto the ones who are other than their cisgender while heaps of scorn come at those whose pronouns match their apparent gender. Especially if they dare defend an idea that non-cis people are against.
Is this the world we live in now? Or is my little corner of the online world just a non-representative fluke, and non-cis people are actually more tolerant than I’m seeing?7 -
I belive developers need their own dating app type to get to know each other better and balance their social life...😁5
-
I really hate interruptions when i'm deep in my code. Headset on and blocking out the world, then get annoyed taps on the shoulder from boss for not greeting people.
So now i'm out of the zone, browsing devrant and have pissed off the boss for being anti-social.1 -
Great. Facebook is building the social media system from Black Mirror's "Nosedive".

Go outside and make some friends.
Buy a bike and go for a tour maybe.
Gonna stay away from screen for a little and tryna be a little social without social networks.1 -
Really glad the privacy community can make some impact. I still don't understand why venmo has to has any public transaction feed and I don't think they have public off by default still, but at least they are explaining things to users instead of being sneaky with their dumb social-network-ish-thingy that made ALL OF YOUR FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS PUBLIC!!????
I don't understand why they hid this whole public feed thing. I'm pretty privacy focused and I didn't even know that my transactions where public untill I saw https://publicbydefault.fyi/.9 -

Some caffeine fueled morning passion...
Social media platforms getting away with suspensions and all other manner of 'social punishment' has to be the highest level authoritarianism has ever reached in its entire history. Social Media platforms, have it seems, become a side gig for tyrants and the excuses don't cut it with people anymore.
It's hard to believe that "we the people" allow companies to govern over entire populations of people, much larger than some of the most democratic and free countries on the planet with an iron fist.
The enforcement of community standards for breaking arbitrary rules that wouldn't make it to a solicitors desk is extraordinary in the extreme. If it's not a credible threat or illegal, then it's obvious an intention behind the punishment is conditioning.
And this is what authoritarian regimes have done throughout history.14 -

Damn life.
Life is very hard.
Social relationships are very difficult.
I am so lonely.
Not friendship.
Not a girlfriend.
All I have is my laptop.
My only companion is a laptop.
The only person sitting on my feet is my laptop.
Well, I'm a programmer, so what?
What kind of person am I?
What is the purpose of my creation?14 -
Being a social media influencer i.e. having a couple thousand followers doesn’t make you entrepreneur. Period.2

Sometimes devs are missing social skills. I felt that today.
I did not know the social code of conduct when leaving the hospital masurbitary room and meeting a colleage about to use the same room I just used.3 -

I never seen my high school friends about a year because of my project and community (with same topic). Then when I met them, I just realized that I never have social life. Still, I'm just a listener. I don't know how I tell about what I did last year, because I'm too afraid they don't understand.
Then I keep my mouth, just smiling, listen their awesome story about their jobs, family or their friends in college ....
I'm come back home, so lonely in here. I opened my laptop, then realised another things. I'm just communicated with scripts, with millions line of codes, with many library, with many issues about my projects, with those compiler ...
How you guys talk with non-IT friends? I don't even remember how I used to be their friends and laugh together
What a saddest night in my life ...4 -
Does DevRant count as social media? I don't think I'm allowed to post to social media while I'm at work. *Asks DevRant anyways*1

Anyone on open source social networks? E.g Diaspora* and Mastodon.
I'm diving deep down the Freedom rabbit hole. It's a whole new world.3 -
I have been wondering if there is a way to use social media in a positive way.
Since high school (when Facebook first started) I knew that this social media was a cancer.
From what I know there is no positive use for cancer, and I’m pretty sure that the same is true for social media.
But to be honest, it is a tool that is very effective in manipulating the masses. In fact, it is likely the greatest tool for leading sheep to slaughter since religion. I’m always looking to take advantage of every tool at my disposal.
Tools shouldn’t be seen as good of bad, so I am going to have to accept it is a tool of great power and use it. Hopefully I can use it in a positive way, but that doesn’t look likely...1 -
Have few close friends, not a swarm of people.
Saves time.
And keeps strong bonds with people that really matter.
Spending some "quality social time" is more valuable than shitload hours of fake fuckery with dumbfucks.
Just my opinion. -
Create something that will take humanity forward. Not just a utility software but make things that'll help solve the biggest problems humans as a society face - poverty, hunger, loneliness, pollution etc. All these problems are on my radar.
The idea is to use science to solve social problems. And not just stop at that. Make things that will help humans evolve into the next evolutionary phase.2 -
I drank so much whisky tonight I can't see straight
no proud of it, but at least i don't lie like all the social media fucks
at least i have that14 -
What is the social networking programmers use to communicate.
Hey guys.
So what program do you guys use to communicate? Something that I can drop here and not behing spammed. Time to start creating my own network arround you guys... You know, smart people.11 -
I was sitting in a client meeting recently and we were discussing the client's social media requirements. We said we'll setup Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google+ profiles when the replied "What about Whatsapp?"
We said "That's a messaging app".

Who here remembers dateprog.com? If you don't, it was a dating site for devs and those who like devs. I'm tempted to ressurect the damn thing, although not as a dating site but more of a social network (think GitHub + Tumblr). Anyone else think that'd be a good idea? I'm also thinking this'll be more than just my weekend sorted, haha. It'd have to have chat, code repos, GitHub login, etc... what do you guys think?
Also not planning to invade the territory of devRant I was just wondering if anyone was interested. Maybe even some kind of extension to devRant, as a social coding platform? I'm not sure aha. Welp, anyway if anybody's interested drop a comment! :)5 -
Buddy: Let's invite the buds and do something. Snorkel? Swim? Movie?
Me: Sure.
Him: when?

Him: Let's do this.
Me: Let's .
It's been two weeks since then. 😂
This pretty much sums up my social life.3 -
I'm hosting dancers for BluesShout! a dance festival in Chicago. Three of the people I'm hosting are developers (two girls, one guy). There are a lot of engineering types that dance. If you haven't done any social dancing, you should really give it a shot. Find a Lindy/Swing, Blues or Contra group and take a class. You might love it. 💃💜3

Video social calls are the absolute worst. I have a shitty Intel 11 series chip in my laptop; which is a waste of sand. My laptop often slows to a crawl on calls, so I can't work on things, and I have to listen to them all prattle on about kids and things I don't care at all about. Sometimes we play games, which is tolerable. My company is international and 100% remote, so this will never end so long as I work for them.1
-
So recently I saw a rant about a e2e encrypted social network and started to consider the idea, what do you guys / brother in code think about it2
-
I am unable to see anything useful in current social networks. It all looks like big advertising platforms and I am not interested in looking on ads. This personalization is so shitty that original content is very hard to find. All is so political correct and trendy and what about uniqueness of human individuals. Shitty socialists networks. Hope this website would not be another one.5

Friends, gather round for a story of "the user".
Two days ago I assisted a friend in reviving their scammed Instagram account with final confirmation it was back in their possession yesterday. I stated "make sure you clean out phone numbers, emails and change the password. WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T USE THE SAME PASSWORD"....I bet you know where this is going....
Queue 6:45am: "HELP! THEY DID IT AGAIN! THEY TOOK MY FACEBOOK THIS TIME TOO!" as a safety measure, I told her to link them for recoverability.....not thinking you just created a bridge to the facebook...
Now We're going through EVERY account BY HAND and changing EVERY password for EVERY service and enabling MFA. We've also learned the power that the forgot password button wields for everyone.
ProTip: If your friend was "hacked" be patient, friendly and soft to get every detail...sometimes you learn more and can position them better.
Now I'm upset with myself because I couldn't save their accounts and at this point we've lost the only footing we had to them. Social Media is a curse.1 -
We do have a social life. A very caring one that supports us when are lost, when we are confused, and when we question our life :)16

I was reading an excellent post by Kage about linkedin (you can find it and more here - https://devrant.com/users/Kage) a little while ago and it occurred to me the unique historic moment we are in. Never before have we been so connected in history. Never before have we had so great an opportunity to communicate with strangers (perhaps except for sketchy candy vans on college campuses, and tie dye wearing guys distributing slips of paper at concerts). And yet today, we are more atomized than ever before. In this unprecedented era of free information, and free communication, how can we make the most of our opportunities?
The great thing about linkedin is all the fawning morons who self select for it. They're on it. They're active, so you know they're either desperate attention hungry cock goblins,
self aggrandizing dicknosed cretins, desperate yeasty little strumpets, or a managerie of other forgetable fucking pawns,
willingly posting up their entire lives to be harvested and sold so someone can make 15 cents on a 2% higher ad conversion ratio for fucking cilas or beetus meds.
So what is a psychopathic autist asshole to do?
Ruthlessly exploit them by feeding them upvotes, hows-it-going-guys, and other little jolts of virtualized feel-good-chemical bullshit.
Remember the quickest way to network is for people to like you. And the quickest way to make people like you is either agree with them on everything, or be absolutely upfront with everything you disagree on.
Well, they'll love you, or hate you. But at least you'll be living rent free in their head. And that means they'll remember you when you call looking to network or get a referal.
Of course, in principle, this extends to any social media site. Why not facebook? Why not fucking *myspace*? Why not write a script in selenium to browse twitter all day, liking pictures of lattes and dogs posted by the lonely and social-approval-hungry devs working at places like google, twitter, faceborg, etc?
You could even extend this to non-job prospects. Want a quick fuck? Why, just script a swipe-right hack on tinder, or attach a big motherfucking robot arm to your phone, tapping and swiping for hours. Want to make a buck? Want not harvest data on ebay or amazon all god damn day and then run arbitration for 'wanted' classifieds on craiglist?
Why not automate all the things?
The world is at your fingertips, and you the power to automate it, while all the wall lickers and finger painters live oblivious to the opportunity they are surrounded with and blessed with daily.
Surely now that you know, it is your obligation, nay, your DUTY to show the way.
Now you are learned. Now you are prepared. Go forth and stroke the egos of disposable morons to bilk for future social favors while automating the world in ways never intended.3 -
I just had the idea for a social network which would care about privacy, don't sell the data of its users and stuff. This would mean the users had to pay for it to keep the lights on, like 1 oder 2 bucks a month.
Do you think this could work? I'm not sure, I think there might already be too much competition in that field.9 -
It might be interesting for you that Facebook and viber is somehow dead in iran and ME(since 2 years ago), the main social network in here is Instagram and chat app is Telegram7

Got a scammer on my hook. Ideas welcome to fuck him/her over.
He/she confused me with someone else and messaged me acting as a support person of an exchange. I acted along and s/he is insisting on sharing account details.
Played along like a dumb internet noob and I think I got him to share his fake email id.
Now I'm thinking of ways to extract more details about him via email.
From top of my mind, these are some ideas I have:
- get his IP address
- zip bomb or something like that? But g mail is probably gonna detect that.
Ideally, If I could social engineer him to give his phone number, I could easily report him to police and find his identity.
Have you busted some scammers? Would appreciate some tips.6 -
usually the worst drunk coding problem i have is leaving nasty comments in the code about the previous maintainers. Or ranting more vehemently on here than is really warranted... ;)
In other words it doesnt affect my coding, it just affects my social skills.... lol...2 -
I like to develop a Social Network for my final year project. You have any suggestions ? It will really help me to develop.
And I like to make it as an Open source project.7 -
It's time we treat social media like (trash) TV: it's all fake!

(can I buy a "++" - I hope not so, but who knows, everything is possible on the interwebs: your refrigerator liking Facebook pages or videos played in one pixel of a web page to generate more views...)3 -
Theorem 2.71 All software is shit.
Corollary 3.14 So stop the braindead OS wars. All OS are shit, too.
Proof. The only software that can stay beautiful and clean is software that is never used. Maybe if you are Dijkstra or live in a Haskellian world, you might come away with it, but for the rest of us our artifacts have to interact with other artifacts or are build upon strange historically grown systems, they have to deal with users who will put it to creative use.. and in the process we also actually might have to alter some state.
Or put another way: code is a social construct. Like science are the beliefs and superstitions grown by a scientific community, software is the montainous dunghill produced by our laborious efforts to make shit even work. Of course this only piles the stack higher and higher until you can already smell it from the moon. -
Do you all sometimes have this strange feeling, that.. actually humanity would not lose anything, if we killed all that useless tech we earn our money with?
Yeah, we get all that propaganda how technical prowess is empowering and sure we all know it's a nice feeling if you can apply the right clicks and bit flips to make the machine do as you want so you feel like the apprentice's sorcerer.
BUT even if you believe your user story adds some business value to some abstract package - what do these devices mostly do? Distract, diffuse your focus, envy other eye-porn provider, endless aberration of clips.
Fuck social media!
(Yes, I know I am on one, but this is because I haven't given up hope on this one.)6 -
Is there any way to guarantee users that our social network won't sell their data? (paid service that doesn't sell data and doesn't show adds)2
-
I love it when I see posts on any social media site or app where it's like
"Looking for someone to hack a <insert social site> account"
Do they not know how secure those sites tend to be?
Do they think it's as easy as CSI makes it out to be?
or
Maybe they're the police trying to trick us -
Anyone used "Showwcase"? Branded as a "social network for devs"
Was reading an article, seems a bit shit, but thoughts?

Is social life a thing? I wouldn't know.
But then again I'm not to fond of people in general (only a few in particular). -
Social media makes me toxic. Yet I could not leave it. Best I could do was reducing insta connection below 40. Is there a social media discourager app?14
-
It was foolish of me to connect with my colleague in social media and now I can not rant there. But sad part is LinkedIn because they will know if I viewed.2

does anybody here use diaspora*? for those who don't, it's a free (as in freedom) social network and protocol thereof, and it employs a decentralized, distributed approach. you can choose a "pod" to store your data, and search for people and content inter-podly. as a decentralization/distribution/foss enthusiast, i love the project and check regularly, but sometimes i get the feeling that i'm all by myself there, as i have no friends yet and all the content i see is just my followed keywords. (so befriend me, maybe? :D)5
-
How to deny a "friend" who is asking me to lend some money ( what he is asking is the largest anyone ever have asked me )?
What's the social etiquette here?
P.S:
I don't have good impression about him.
Few weeks ago, i changed my plans for him so that he could tag along with me to a place quite far away to apply for our course certificate . He delays the plan, not doing what he was supposed to do and had told me he would do.
I end up wasting 3 days waiting on him and finally goes on my own ( how it was supposed to be before I offered him free ride in the first place )
I don't like people who can't keep their words or let alone lie or don't tell you if they are not intending on keeping it.
Now I'm amazed by his nerve to ask money like that.8 -
My social life is currently mosty consisting of being social with computers, therefore my socialLife and devLife are pretty much balanced.
-
In php how would I "visit" another user cause a lot of people say use
$_SESSION["username"] = $_POST["username"]
or
Echo $_SESSION["username"]
Or
Echo $_POST["USERNAME"]
Are any of these good or should I just feck the computer out the window 😂13 -
"As with most social phenomena, social-network success tends to happen more organically and unpredictably than anyone is able to artificially create by throwing money at it." - Marco Arment1

So how do people feel about the ignored people, I haven't done it with anyone so don't know what people really feel.
I mean you are sitting there and they are literally not talking to you because you are very shy. Your name is not called out in a discussion even when you are one of the developers whose project is talked about, you were just ignored because you didn't speak up.
What do people really think about the people they ignore?8 -
Have any of you fin devs out there on the interwebs had any experience with building social networks using `Stream`??
I am looking into their API for use in a golang project of mine but I am unsure about a few things...
1. Reliability
2. Scalability and the cost of it
3. General API quality, in Golang specifically but any comments are great.
It's a stretch I'm sure but if there was a place that folks would know it would be here @ devRant1 -
I was ten years old. At this point, despite being in my early 20's, I've officially been programming more than half of my life. From the first moment I knew that this was possible, that we, as software engineers, can do what we do... I've been quite literally obsessed with the idea.
I don't like to give other people credit for the events in my own life, but there is one thing that, more than anything else at the time that lead me down the path of computer science, directly lead me to where I'm at today. If you're at all interested in film and cinema (not to mention programming) then you've undoubtedly heard of The Social Network, directed by David Fincher. Amazing film, I'd recommend it to anyone based off of the film alone, but for me that movie holds a special place in my heart.
My mom took me to see it that movie in theaters when it came out, I would not stop bugging her to take me, there was just something about the founding of Facebook that... Sparked my young imagination. I swear to you that I didn't blink for the entire time I was in the theater watching it. It blew my mind, not only that you could do that kind of stuff with computers, but that you could actually make a lot of money working with computers as well... Ten year old me had different priorities in regards to programming 😂 Starting the moment I got home from the theater, I dedicated my life to learning everything I could about computers. Originally my goal was to, shock of all shocks, create a social networking site for me and my friends to use. I still like to brag about it to this day, but that project eventually became my groups final project in our computer class in Middle School. It was funny, middle school computer class, I had already been programming a few years by that point and was rather proficient in PHP. There were kids submitting literal spreadsheets in Excel as their final project, a few static HTML pages, that sorta jazz. My group and I submitted a full fledged twitter clone, with complete functionality. We got 100% on the project 😂😂
My reasons and interests have changed over the years. For example, I'm not particularly interested in creating a social media application these days, and I don't program because I think it'll make me rich one day (though the hopes always there) but the one thing that hasn't changed since that night I sat enraptured in the beautiful cinematography of David Fincher and facepaced dialogue of Aaron Sorkin, is the complete and total fascination with computers and technology. For that reason The Social Network will forever be my favorite movie.3 -
I figured out a workaround the coronavirus shit and to protect myself in public.
Instead of wearing medical masks (like all the sheep out there), I am gonna be wearing a gangsta-style bandanna.
It covers face and mouth. BUT most importantly it will scare people away and no one would get close so i will be practicing social distancing everywhere I go using nothing but the power of fear and stereotypes.7 -
Is there a unit test for dance moves? I really gotta see some green lights before I move this one into production. Side note: anyone have a UAT environment for this? Thx3

When other people sleep, I work, when other people work, I sleep. Best social life. Just work and sleep.

I want to create a social experiment and I need advice
Essentially I want to make a spherical voronoi or Delaunay triangulation, but the points are added by any user on internet. A user can do one of the operation, say every other ten minutes:
Add a point
Delete a point
Change color of a region
Open to suggestions, tell me what you think4 -
So I just started using the app called Rmabox and it seems pretty useful. Actually I am ranting using the same app. Keeps all my social profiles at one place. But I am concerned about my privacy as well. Is it safe to use such apps which help you to manage all your social accounts at one place? Will that not create a single point of security breach?1

I know I need to use twitter and Instagram to help leverage my online presense into a job opportunity.
But as a jr developer experienced that's not heavy on social media, I go early don't know wtf to write or tweet. And I don't want to post "dev content" related stuff because I dont wanna be laughed at.
What so I write or post? Help7 -
As a senior developer with a couple of years under the belt, do you think having an active Instagram, YouTube and Facebook account is necessary? Does It help professionally at all? or am I just wasting time that I can use elsewhere?
I am thinking about launching my own SaaS in the future. But as a developer, does social media presence impact in any significant way in your professional life?
I am kinda getting addicted to posting setup videos and reels on Instagram. I don't have an end goal in mind. I just find it a way to express myself. But sometimes even I get cringe seeing my own posts. I was thinking about ditching IG and Facebook and twitter and go back to writing blog posts or something.3 -
Intelligent Algorithms do not understand role playing, acting or humor.
Combined with permanent unique identifiers issued by social media companies for so-called "security" and moderation reasons, will systematically cause a wide range of serious consequences.
You can not reason with an algorithm.2 -
Can anyone help me with NativeScript social Oauth login with Vue.js ? I've been trying to figure out how to implement it. Thanks in advance.

I've done a social anxiety test to find not-so-surprising results. I shared that to a group of programmers then hm, that's a lot of anxious people. Are we socially anxious naturally or what? are you guys socially anxious even?8
-
How do I balance my social life with dev life? Well, I try to meet with my friends at least 2 times a week, on fridays I'm taking dancing lessons, after that me and people from lessons go out for a bear and maybe to a club. There is also a girl there who I would like to meet more, but she is older and I'm shy as fuck. The rest of my time is mostly dev5

Need complete control over information you're fetching while logging in via social site in Django

Soon launching a social networking app just for devs. Post Dev memes, Collab, rant, brainstorm over ideas, reach out to anyone for chat, post your cool devspace pictures and earn rewards. Stay tuned!
Ps- I know there are many similar platforms, this is just a project I developed learning coding app development so just don't brag me about the concept. Although, a better UI/UX never hurts!
The project is fully coded by me and am open for Sr. Devs collabs for the project.16 -
Going to do our first social engineering pen test. We're setting up a general plan and we'll call for a meeting with a company next week. Any tips?5

Is it just me or anybody else also feels like that DevRant will become like a social credit from Black Mirror ?3

How complex is it to add a social media "share" button to a c# desktop application?
So, if I wanted to share achievements to social media, how difficult would it be to share to Twitter?1 -
So I was bored today and I decided to jump on the “shit on Facebook for being offline“ train by posting some PROGRAMMING memes on the rest of the available social media. I didn’t repost like everyone else and everything was fine until I made the mistake to post them on imgur as well. Apparently imgur is full of toxic, sad, arrogant pricks that will downvote the shit out of anything in an instant, without really understanding the posts. If you think reviews on the app store, google play or review bombings on steam are the definitions of stupidity and ignorance or that comments on Facebook are everything wrong with this world, then you haven’t tried posting on imgur.
Seriously, fuck imgur.7 -
Software Development is a very isolating profession. Everytime I spend a few months focusing on a big project for a client, I end up needing to learn how to interact with people and be social again.
What solutions would one offer to keep the social skills at least stagnat during dedicated software development?1 -
Anyone know some good social media bots or tools or whatever
My school's principal just put me (one of the least social people in the building) in charge (I need to build a team too 😢😢😭) of a social media infused project -
What's the name of that protocol that federated social media software implements? ActivityPub? well, what ever the name is I know it does not implement any concept for fitness specific social updates (like this app Hevy does)
-
Omg why are social cards so hard to debug? Did no one think of such obscure techniques as local debugging? And why doesn't Twitter show me the error message? It's the same code for fuck sake! It works with one article but not with another. There MUST be some very exact problem with one of my images, but Twitter just doesn't fucking give me a proper log.1

Do you use social networks?
What do you think, how important is social marketing for active users of social networks. For those who may not know, social marketing is the promotion of your page, blog, in various kinds of social media. For example, I am an active user of YouTube. I have a dream, 1 million subscribers. But starting was not easy at all. It is very difficult to break through the routine of thousands of other small channels. The guys from https://videosgrow.com/free-youtube... helped me in this. Now I’m half way to my dream, I have about 500 thousand subscribers, which I am undoubtedly glad.1 -
What's your experience with Activity Stream (v1/2)?
Is it worth the trouble building a social network system with this tech in mind? -
What do you guys think about dopamine driven feedback loops of social media. Getting likes comments on the post gives you dopamine hit making you contribute more content!?!!! People are now willing to pay(to do anything). Beast is getting feeded!?!!1

Does anyone have any good advice on how to use Github as a social media platform...? There are people that have so many stars and watchers on some of their projects... It would be cool to collaborate with some other developers on something and get something like that going...
