Boss: “Do you think you can work on Saturday? We really need the help.”
Me: “Yes, of course.”
Boss: “Great, thank you.”
Me: “I’ll probably be late, though, as public transport is slow on the weekends.”
Boss: “Okay, when do you think you will be at the office?”
Me: “Monday”.17 -
• Manager : WTF did you push, now it keeps crashing all the servers.
• Me : (silent, I'm trying to speak but nothing is coming out. Felt like someone in coma).
• Someone else shouts at boss : Now we now have 47 major crisis bridges.
[I went running for the door to get away from everything.]
Only to find myself rolling on the floor tangled in my bedsheets after falling from my bed. Realized it was all but a nightmare.
Went to get some water. While taking the first sip...
Me: Shit, I'm late for work AGAIN.
Running for the door again. Then stopped to think if this is all some fuckin premonition. Hurriedly went for my phone to find out it's nothing but Sunday.
I'm thinking about a career switch now. No more devops once this is over.8 -
I fucking hate this about myself in the weekends.
I promise myself to get up early enough and do loads of programming and I end up sleeping in and not being productive all day.
And then at the end of the day I feel guilty.
I hate that.30 -
My dad picked up programming in Java as a hobby when I started my own dev company. We pair program on the weekends! 😁8
-
The times when we coded in C# on weekends at the university and it was a 4-hour nonstop process. I LOVED it. That was one of the only times I've felt in control or competent in anything.11
-
Interviewer: "Show me a cool side-project you have been working on!"
Me: "No! I do not have a cool side-project to show you! I work to pay the bills, and do other things in my spare time! Like go fishing, or play video games. Why the fuck are you assuming that I spend my weekends coding for fun!? Do you call random people asking them questions every Saturday and Sunday just for the LOLs of it?"36 -
There was a previous developer who my managers has told us was terrible and toxic. Yet due to terrible planning, he had everyone work for over 13 hours last Sunday.
I contacted this previous developer to learn his side of the story and learned a lot. I realize between their two narratives is the truth, but I see all the ways we've been lied, the ways this other dev was scapegoated and all the additional work that's sure to come.
I refuse to work weekends again. I refuse to work over 40 hours. I wish I could convince everyone else to do the same. No amount of money is worth making up for bad planning and management.1 -
Was writing a first product for my best friend and my first company/startup. (that one is on hold now by the way).
Spent about a month doing a full-time internship and also programming after that the entire day. Weekends full of programming as well and after a few weeks I noticed that when turning around/walking quickly, I lost my balance.
Went to the doctor who immediately asked if I worked loads and loads to which I answered yes.
He took a look at my daily patterns in general and then told me that I was having a thing which you were only supposed to get at old age and that I was heading towards a burnout because my body was highly not used to/ready for this.
Continued for a little and people started asking why I looked so white (my face lost color) and unhealthy.
Started to take care of myself and voilà, within weeks I was getting better :)6 -
I've put my blood, sweat and tears into this company in the past years. Worked overtime, evenings, weekends, night shifts to get shit done and helped out in sharing knowledge only to learn a new guy who's still learning has 200 bucks higher pay check than me.
I'm not even sure how to react to this.18 -
A guide to estimations.
1) don’t give an immediate answer. The first “timeframe” you give will be held against you and will result in overtime and working weekends.
2) think of a relevant piece of work and the time that took.
2.1) if it’s something you haven’t done before, add some adequate research time.
3) allow half a day of testing for every day of development.
4) add a day as buffer - this is good for on the fly bug fixes
5) calculate time
6) now give an educated estimate.
7) this should take you 5 seconds to get through mentally.
8) if scope creep occurs: goto:15 -
- Wife logs onto uni website Saturday at 11pm to drop an elective, drop deadline is Monday
- Goes to course list and chooses course to drop
- "Course modification is available Monday-Saturday from 6am to 10pm"
😑 are you kidding me..
Like 😡😠 websites don't have business hours! Servers don't need nights or weekends off!! It's ridiculous to think that someone had to code this block for these hours, more effort than just leaving it always available.6 -
When on monday, a client asks you "WHY SOMETHING ISN'T FINISHED". Well, we don't work on weekends. Fuck off.3
-
I've resigned 3 weeks ago. I have also completed my handover process.
Yesterday I was told that I have to work in the weekend and at night because project delivery date is the following week.
Kindly I responded that I have resigned and working on weekends and late nights won't benefit me in anyway now actually I wasn't benefiting from working on weekends and late nights even before my resignation.
Project manager is pissed off at me.
Oh well, it is what it is 🤷8 -
so I'm married to a developer. he works at horrible boring forever projects he is trying to make me apreachiate. well fine. I can do that. sure. but for fucks sake, why on earth does a web developer need to work weekends?! and why can't he get time off? why is it even remotely important if the shop is up a today or a week later? who the fuck cares if people have to wait a week longer to buy fucking pumpkin oil online?! who buys fucking pumpkin oil online anyway?32
-
I think I’m a bit unusual in that my favorite place to code is on the couch, just using my laptop. During the work day I use two monitors, but I find it more comfortable to just use a lap desk and laptop when I get home/on weekends. I’m not sure if it’s from laziness or whatever, but it seems to work.7

I am a female manager at a small, mostly male company, and directly manage several people (all male). One of the six has worked for me for multiple years. Since he began his employment, I always felt he had a “crush” on me and kept my distance (as much as I could as his manager).
His crush has gotten increasingly more obsessive over the past year: constantly staring at me, using absurd reasons to contact me through email/messenger/texts, whether at work or evening/weekends, and getting extremely emotional/upset if I do not frequently talk with him or provide feedback for his every task. He never says anything inappropriate or makes any advances but is making me increasingly more uncomfortable.
My tendency to avoid the employee combined with my obvious annoyance with his increasingly absurd reasons to interact with me is reflecting poorly on my management skills — to the extent that my manager is questioning my abilities to manage.25 -
They say developers don't have social lives...
Over one half of my total commits on GitHub have been from just Fridays and Saturdays...
I mean, I guess they're not wrong.4 -
How I've got my previous job?
Imagine you are in a wild techno club. Dark aisles, A dj from berlin behind the turntables blasting out hard beats, couples kissing on extasy pills.
And there was a friend I've didn't meet in ages. "how do you do?" she asks. "ah... you know i'm on a job hunt for a year i feel misrable". "really? my dad is looking for somebody, send him your resNZNZNZ!" "WHAT? can't hear you!" "Send him your resume!" "Ahhh! okay great!"
So on 24. december 5pm, snow outside, i've sat on wooden table in the kitchen of her father discussing the conditions for the job. It was the start of a crazy time. Dining with millionaires on their Castles. Shaking hands with top businesses leaders. Going to China and having dinner with the 500 richest chinese at once. Wild!
so my advice for you nerds, don't stay in your comfort zone behind the screen on weekends. Vistit a techno club sometimes. You may find a pretty girl/boy with a CEO as a father.rant last job techno wk77 i'm a graphic designer switzerland job hunting rich people are just like you&me china14 -
How everyone see weekends:
Its party time and I can finally sleep and watch movies as much as I want...
How devs see weekends:
Finally I can work more on this cool project...6 -
So I used to be a chef, then I got married and decided my weekends and holidays were better spent than making food for ungrateful shit-wagglers, or getting screamed at in Lebanese by the exec Chef during dinner service at the end of a ten-hour shift, so I went back to school for Computer Engineering. I was so worried because I swore compulsively from day one of classes.
Little did I know way back then, the first programming language I ever learned was swearing.2 -
It's weird reading about everyone bitching about their PM / manager, and I'm here and have the best boss anyone can ask for. I work from home whenever I want, if I work extra I can always take that extra time off. If I work weekends I get 100% overtime pay. If I want to learn new tech for a project he tells me to go nuts.
What I'm really trying to say here is.. in all yo faces I guess. \o/13 -
I am so fucking jealous of all you assholes. Oh look at me, i am a full stack developer and yada yada. I have the time and patience to do whatever app or game i want and show it off.
Fuck, you.
If i get home, i am glad i can stay awake for dinner and play a little game before i go to bed and my next day starts.
I have ideas, i need to do some self study to get all parts of those ideas going, but i fucking can't.
I have no motivation and no energy to spend when i get home, and even the weekends rarely i will feel like proframming jack shit. When or how do you even do it?! It's driving me up the wall and it makes me feel useless.
Stop being better then me in every possible way!29 -
Work at a start-up they said. It will be fun they said.
It's awesome, the learning curve is unbelievable.
But your personal life? Destroyed.
Weekends? Sleeping more than 6-7 hours a day? Forget about it.4 -
Some words of wisdom passed on by our Scrum.
1. I am responsible for setting boundaries. Work time, sleep time, family time, me time. If I don't set them properly, things WILL get unbalanced very quickly. (And I would add, burnout will follow closely).
2. Being productive isn't about doing more and more in less time. It's about doing only the most important things well, and either saying no to the other things, or finding another way to get them done. (Prioritize!)
3. I can't win (let alone run) a marathon by thinking of it as a 26 mile long sprint, or a week as a five day sprint. (Eat a digital elephant a byte at a time).
4. Loved ones are good judges of when things are in and out of balance.
5. Taking time off is essential. Vacations, yes, but also nights and weekends. (Or you WILL burn out and hate what you do).

Our boss keeps mentioning that the company is good to people who put in long hours and work weekends. We're all salary and there's no extra money on the table; just references to bonuses.
I'm sure when I'm 75 and in hospital with pneumonia, the last thing going through my head will be, "Man, I wished I had worked more hours on that backend for the app for that fast food company that gives the world diabetes."
The company can't give me summer back. It can't give me a 30C day in the middle of the winter. Even asking employees to work long hours and on weekends constantly is a sign of poor management, poor planning and the inability to value people's individual time.7 -
Surprise surprise, that unrealistic deadline you set even when the engineering team told you that it wasn't going to work has backfired! Maybe you wouldn't be so stressed if you learnt to listen? It's a pretty basic skill, or at least I thought so.
Oh and when you say "we have two options, stay late or work weekends" you have a critical bug in your conditional. Your missing option 3, go the fuck home. Time to enjoy my weekend with friends and family.4 -
1) "Do you consider yourself good with Java? Most of our clients want web pages"
2) "Do you like coding for work on weekends?"
Are you serious?4 -
Project manager: We have 13weeks for this project. We have promised the client.
Me: okay, why wasnt I consulted on that commitment?
Project Manager: yeah.... we have to do it
Me: okay, if we have 2 dedicated backend and one full time frontend - ONLY on this project.
Project manager: (with the face of lies) yes yes sure we can do that.
6 weeks later, after continuous interruptions. Frontend is behind because he was only on the project to an amount of 2 weeks of the 6 weeks.
Project manager: Are we still on time?
Me: *looks around for prank cameras* no the f#*k we not
Project manager: can we put in weekends?
Me: its 2019 bro, that ain't happening
*But because I am a nice guy, and dont like taking Ls, we will have it ready. Just not gonna tell the project manager, he deserves a few sleepless nights *7 -
To that person who came here to weep about how his employees don’t want to work on weekends and how he’s gonna force them to and deleted his rant that was downvoted to oblivion:
Please re-evaluate your mindset. Today it’s just downvotes, tomorrow it’s your entire staff quitting and pressing charges.17 -
!RANT
Me and My designer friend created a chrome extension, He designed the UI in like 10Mins and It took me 4 sleepless weekends to make it to v0.1 launch. It's hurts when people only say *pleasant UI, loving it* and all shit. 😒 I'm totally shroooved 😷4 -
Got this from boss (a few colleagues got it as well):
Sites have been down over the weekend and seems the only person cares is PM! There is a condition about working when required (i.e. unpaid OT) on your contract! It is essential that sites are properly managed even at weekends - we run a online business! If anyone has problems we'll discuss next week
*Note: site was partially down and there was no major impact on the business
When I explained why we need to rebuild the sites, you said not now - almost 2 years now, still nothing happens.
When I asked if we can get managed hosting or load balancer, fecking NO again
After asking for my opinion on the sites, you & the puppet think my honesty is me being negative and incorporate, and exclude me from meetings and major part of my work
Go fuck yourself! I've warned you about the status of the sites and you did not want to listen SO DON'T TELL ME I'M NOT DOING MY JOB WHEN YOU'RE THE ONE STOPPING ME FROM DOING IT PROPERLY!
I'm sure we'll have our meeting very soon, cheapskate.10 -
So...my company decided to say that I am not effective because not working more than 12 hours per day and work on weekends. But in my contract stated 9:30 - 6:3018
-
Worst of 2020?
Well, I've learnt never to do free / voluntary work.
Been spending many weekends helping out a former friend, mostlyby creating APIs, sites, managing servers & scripting.
Now that I have a girlfriend, my weekends are spent mostly with her.
He got really mad, said he doesn't want to waste time.
Then went to *pay* someone else to continue what I've been doing...7 -
Let me tell you a story.
Our company has a homegrown monitoring solution. Keeps track of our deployments and alerts us when something is broken. Really nice for the most part, except a little issue where we get up to 25 alerts PER DAY that our PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT IS DOWN. Including weekends.
With this many false positives, we quickly learn to ignore the alerts and miss real incidents.
So we approached this team, remember its our own tool, and told them about the problem. Turns out it is a known issue. And here's the kicker: they aren't planning on fixing it!
It gets better. Rather than fix this glaring issue, their solution is to make ANOTHER ALERT that lets us know the monitoring is misbehaving.
To recap, we can now expect to get up to 25 false positive alerts per day that our production is down, followed immediately by more alerts that the monitor is broken, which means we can ignore the previous alert.
As our PM said when he heard this: fuck that noise. We are escalating the shit out of this!7 -
Can someone explain why weekends feel only 2 hours long in comparison to the rest of the week? I feel like I’m only beginning to relax and it’s a Sunday night.13
-
Weekends be like:
Half day = *thinking* what should I do in weekend
Half day= *thinking in regret* I didn't do anything productive
😂😂😂3 -
Boss giving a me a lift to work cause he wants to start work earlier since our ad revenue plunged during the weekends. One fucked up day coming up.3
-
Hm...I would except since COVID started, moved back to my parents, so use my dad's laptop for work... He uses it on weekends.6
-
Applied for a company and received a contract today. I can't believe what I'm looking at. (Graduate software engineer)
- £30k starting salary
- 28 days annual holiday
- no benefits whatsoever
- no work schemes
- reserve the right to tell you to work overtime without extra pay
- reserve the right to work you from home on weekends in emergencies
- you will only work on what they tell you to and nothing else
This company has awful reviews all over the internet which I didn't see until after applying.
Going into their offices for interviews, all I saw was a bunch of slaves on their screens, no one talking, no one smiling.
Spoke to the CTO whose words were, quote: "we only care about making money, we don't care what people are saying about us as long as they are using our service and paying us."
What the actual fuck?15 -
New spin on the Manager / Dev format!
Recuiter: WE NEED AN ABSOLUTE NODE EXPERT, NODE NODE NODE, WE LOVE NODE! WHAT IS YOUR NODE EXPERIENCE?!?!
Dev: Well I've had exposure to it since it was nearly new, all the way back in 2012, and since my professional career started about 7 years ago I've used it fairly often on a per-project basis.
Recruiter: WELL HAVE YOU BEEN USING IT DAILY FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS!?!
Dev: Well no, as I said I've used it for specific projects... anyway, there are these things called weekends...
Recruiter: WELL WE ONLY WANT NODE ZOMBIES SO SORRY.
Dev: Thanks for reaching out and wasting my time.
Recruiter: ...
Dev: ...
God recruiters are like robots, don't they understand senior-level engineers are language agnostic?6 -
I cannot stand when they sugar coat their training and support structures in the interview then turning that into: We expect you to learn on the evenings and weekends as a “hobby”. My hobby is my choice not your choice otherwise it doesn’t mean a hobby, it means over time that you don’t want to pay for.15

So Friday afternoon is always deployment time at my company. No sure why, but it always fucks us.
Anyways, last Friday, we had this lovely deployment that was missing a key piece. On Wednesday I had tested it, sent out an email(with screenshots) saying "yo, whoever wrote this, this feature is all fucked up." Management said they would handle it.
The response email. 1(out of 20) defects I sent in were not a defect but my error. No further response, so I assume the rest were being looked into.
In a call with bossman, my manager states that the feature is fixed, so I go to check it quickly before the deployment(on Friday).
THERE IS NO FUCKING CODE CHECK-IN. THE DEV BASTARD JUST SAID THAT MY USECASE WAS WRONG, SO MY ENTIRE EMAIL WAS INVALID.
I am currently working on Saturday, as the other guy refuses to see the problem! It is blatant, and I got 3 other people to reproduce to prove I am not crazy!
On top of that, the code makes me want to vomit! I write bad code. This is like a 3rd grader who doesn't know code copy-pasted from stack overflow! There is literally if(A) then B else if(!A) then B! And a for loop which does some shit, and the line after it closes has a second for loop that iterates over the same unaltered set! Why?! On top of that, the second for loop loops until "i" is equal to length-1, then does something! Why loop???
The smartest part of him ran down his Mama's leg when it saw the DNA dad was contributing!
Don't know who is the culprit, and if you happen to see this, I am pissed. I am working on Saturday because you can't check your code or you lied on your resume to get this job, as you are not qualified! Fuck you!15 -
What do you guys do on off time? More code? Gaming?
I mostly spend weekends with my girlfriend and away from code. Helps clear my head for the coming week.20 -
I just spent 2 hours helping a fellow Sr Dev format an “if block” in code. Then helped show them how to step through the code. This is what passes as a senior at my company? I no joke have stayed at this job for 6 more months than I wanted to out of pure pity for my team. I want to quit so bad, but the team is in such terrible shape and can’t hire anyone new that is willing to stay. All good people personally, but gosh this job is just brain dead and eats my weekends when I should be focusing on family. Back to helping through the 500 line if block. There are worse things in life, but this just feels terrible.11
-
Errrr.... Guys, how do we do weekends again?
I woke up worrying about a bijillion shit, exactly at 6 AM. I think I might be forgotten how to do weekends... 😕12 -
This is a shit post:
Once upon a time, I went to work.... and decided I can shit at work... it was very nice.. I did that a couple of times... at some point, while siting there.. alone, I thought... 'I am getting paid to do this',
so I started shitting everyday at work as it was very worthy but then...
one day I went back home and I had to take a dump.... and though... 'but why should I, no one is paying me to do so'?!... and I didn't...
With time passing by, My ability to shit at home was deprived, the joy that I had shitting at work became a necessity... and the weekends.... long and stagering, but Mondays made me fill... everything with joy.
Capitalism has manipulated me... into making me love Mondays, making them innevitable for me, Capitalism has brainwashed me into being an obedient slave, we must rise and destroy each and every toilet in the companies in which we work or else...
I don't see how I would be able to go on vacations... for 2-3 weeks...8 -

One of the worst weekends of my adult life. I'm flying to attend my best friends funeral tomorrow. My flight is delayed over 6 hours by a cyclone that already passed over my house 3 days ago. And I am still in my 90 days at my new job so I can't take any PTO and have to take a redeye Monday morning and be back online for standup.2 -
So one of our clients is changing the IPs of his systems (3 servers and one VPN).
It was scheduled that we should support them yesterday. They have tried to change the IPs yesterday for almost 16 hours, don't know they have done in all of that time.
Today I woke up at 8AM on a Sunday (in weekends I just want to sleep!!!!) to continue and hope that we finish fast.
BUT NO! THE fucking VPN IS NOT WORKING!! We are trying to do this over Team FUCKIN VIewer.
But guess what... they cannot either connect to the new IPs from their local systems.1 -
CTO: Research, problem analysis, customer need validations, and data based prioritisation is stupid.
Me: So, then why should we solve this problem?
CTO: Because my team invests a lot of time in here (read "because we build a shitty system in past without thinking and we are doing it again").
Me: I don't see this as a good idea.
CTO: I become emotional when I request product to align and they don't. We must solve this problem and not what customers want.
Me: I am not participating here.
CTO: And I want you to work on weekends to support my team.
Me: *disconnects*3 -
My Saturday evening went regretting about not doing anything productive today.
And I repeat this every f***ing weekend!7 -
Alright, I have no idea who to blame!
Me and my Linux group at college hosted a Firefox Quantum Sprint with about 30people. And we promised them Firefox swag coz Mozilla promised us! Its been more than two fuckin weeks since we were supposed to recieve them... no swag!
Well, guess what? The local post office says "Insufficient Reciever Address". I specifically remember giving u morons More than sufficient sender address! My name, college name, college address, my number... thats enough to get me assasinated if u want and u cant send a package of stickers?!!!
Well shit.. after five more emails I havent even gotten a reply from Mozilla.. or maybe its the weekends... fuck! Why am i defending these assholes?!!
Send me ur swag Mozilla! Or I ll... I ll...
Wait.. i cant do shit!
Fuck my life! 😣😣😣1 -
So as some of you know, I gave notice. my current company has me for 4 more days.
Why has my manager not given me someone to knowledge transfer to? Do they think I am bluffing? He even admits there is shit only I know!
Whenever I message him about it, he just ignores me. I guess if he wants me to do it later, I can in the weekends for $50 an hour? 🤔🤔8 -
That feeling when you finish work on Friday having built something really cool, but don't want to stop working on it.
Partly because you were enjoying it, partly because you were in the zone, and partly because you're scared that you are going to forget how it works by Monday! -
Working for a company where the coworkers working 24/7 and the boss (ceo) expect me to do the same, even working on weekends.
But when i mentioned I have life distinctly personal and working life. But no, boss wouldn’t care much about my life anyway.
I got call names for being a not team player, not committed much , a thief (“ I paid you money but you didn’t work 24/7”) and they even claimed I don’t have heart to work.
It affect my personal so much that I can’t be happy even on the weekends. I got perturbed sleeps. Keep thinking of working .
Obviously they played well on guilt tripping me.8 -
I worked two months for free, 15h per day, including weekends, due a contract trap. On top of that, client was emotionally blackmailing me and I was feeling threatened and helpless.
I even lost weight, skipping meals to save time and money. One day, my body collapsed. I ended up in bed for 10 days, feeling stiffness, pain, weakness, and shakiness. I even had to ask for help to brush my teeth.
I abandoned the project, and didn't receive any payment. The client went crazy and made me feel the worst person in the world for being sick and unable to work. But didn't put his menaces in execution.
I still remember the joy I felt when I was able to walk again.
That was the worst burnout I had, and also one of the biggest lessons about limits and evil people.2 -
- Be me
- Been in a new job for 2 months
- Was excited because of 50% salary increase and better position
- Have a new team of 6 devs including me. All new guy
- Market crash
- Top management demands a trim down to all divisions
- Will be left to 3 devs next month
- All the while being asked to
- Deliver a shopify like marketplace from end to end
- Deliver integration with partners for data inventory tracking
- All within 2 months
- Furious when target is not met
- Demands a micro management to every single person on the team on what their day to day schedule
- Demands everybody to live by hustle culture and ready to work non stop even nights or weekend
- Be me
- Been working non stop for at least a month
- Sacrificed weekends and holidays
Beginning to think that maybe the money and position isn't worth the hassle6 -

Fuck my broken brain. I’ve been taking various meds for depression/ptsd for 11 years, and just when you think you’re making progress it comes back and takes a nice big shit in your slippers.
I Referee grass roots football (soccer) on the weekends, and I’ve been out with an injury. I should have been reffing a women’s game this afternoon but my damaged brain has other ideas.
Sometimes I just want to scream fuck it all and move to the woods to become a full time spoon whittler7 -
I really wish people valued health over profit.
So I joined a company last month and last week I got assigned to the biggest client we have. The project is quite big and there are no deadlines coming up. I was sick for a couple of days and hence could not turn up at the office. Apparently the client called up my manager and went on a rant about this situation. So now I have to work on the weekends to cover up for the missed work while on meds that make me sleepy.
Fuck such clients.2 -
I spent the last three weeks+ (literally THREE full weeks, weekends too) building something I thought was really cool, powerful, and useful. Made a blog post, posted a giant thread on the company Twitter.
Literally one person gave it a like.
I don't know why I give shit anymore, cuz nowadays if it isn't about getting rich quick, cHaTgPt, or some other made up hype, no one cares. Apparently I shouldn't either...
Meanwhile my 16 GIGABYTE RAM MAC, yes 16 GIGABYTE RAM can't even hold power while plugged in, and I'm still clowning around with an ancient iPhone 6 (actually one of my mom's old iphones) that barely stays above 20% battery for more than an hour...
And FINALLY, my FUCKING ISP is for sure screwing me, since I've been doing some hard core data streaming and broadcasting, even though I pay $60+ month for that shit it, keeps dropping out, shit doesn't load.... I mean wtf this isn't 1990 dialup AOL anymore
When I step back I just feel like the worlds biggest loser, maybe the world's biggest 🤡7 -
I have a disgusting corporate wanna be manager in my company and i fucking want him to die.
He thinks he owns the company... by just the way he walks.. u could tell he believes everyone around him to be his underling.
hes not actually good in anything but he is amazing at posting about how we need more descipline in the company every now and then. most employees here are workaholics who love their jobs too much and stay more than needed and yet he likes to remind them they need to be *desciplined* enough to be here at 10 sharp. (most are 15 to 30 mins late but everyone stays hours extra voluntarily...).
i wish he'd stop thinking he is qualified to micro manage nor is he supposed to. some of the people (not even including myself) that he is calling undesciplined are literally the reason he still has a job because of the weekends and all nighters they voluntarily put in.
Rot in hell u micro managing corporate wanna be asshole...
Rot in hell2 -
Boss: "wow how it happened it's already November? Well, here is this project that we supposed to end on October that I didn't mentioned yet, sorry I was sure last month was September. Don't make any plans for next few weekends, ok?"6
-
I accidentally created something adorable. See, what happened was I wanted to figure out how to programmatically create blobcats for different countries, since I’d done it by hand for every country represented at my company and wanted a quick way to catch up once we add people from different countries.
Enter Cloudinary!
Wrote a transform that would take the image, shrink it to 150 px wide, then add the blobcat emoji as the underlayer behind and above it, then add the little arms I drew die holding the flag on top.
And that worked! I had a folder of flags and the frontend could query them using the transformations and the country blobcats were born! I even added a preset so I could view the little blobcats with their flags when I looked at the uploaded flags
But then I’m like “Eh, each transform adds a thing against my limit and I really don’t want to go over if this gets popular (why do I ever think _that’s_ a possibility?). I know! I’ll just add the transform on upload and reupload all the flags to a different folder! Then I’ll just need to request the image instead of having to do the transform per request.
And that worked!
But I forgot I still had my preset transform on.
So in addition to the successful country blobcat, I had a preview of what I like to call papa blobcat with kitten blobcat.4 -
How do working professionals find time to learn new tech? Work all weekdays... Shit tired on weekends this happens for few months and suddenly kids are b building ai and stuff and u just feel dumb.. how do you guys do it? How do you stay on top of the game?7
-
I dont work weekends ever. And I dont bring my work home with me, once I finish for the day, Im finished. Even if there is a deadline looming or something is due for a weekend release. I will only work when Im in the office. And I wont work extra unpaid hours. All that does is create unrealistic expectations from your employer and clients. I did it once and learned that there was no point and I could have just gone home and it would have been fine. Im never doing it again.3

Being productive on personal projects instead of playing league of legends on the weekends. (student)2
-
Was invited to work on a new startup which had 2 founders and 3 devs including me.
Within 2 years, founders started fighting related to equity and stuff. Those mfs Finally dissolved the company.
We 3 became jobless but continued as a team and with the contacts we got from previous startup we started working on projects outsourced by other companies.
I was the designer, and the other one a passionate android and ios dev, last one was a pro php, node.js dev. We were super productive and fast. Worked together alot until one of us got a really good job in a company.
We still work on some crazy projects, discuss random shit, help each other with their projects whenever we meet on weekends. -
I get about 4-5 hours sleep. Like today: I went to work, made my lunch at work, got changed for football, played football from 7-9pm got home at 9:30, cooked, ate, showered and dried my hair and it's now 1am.
Tomorrow I got football training for another team so again I'll be getting into be at about 1am.
Also I forgot go mention ive got to get up at 6 for work And Friday I have to be at the doctors for 7. Yeyyyyy me!!! Don't even ask me about the weekend...
I feel like this classifies as a rant because I don't get to code at the weekends and it kills me 😡😡 especially when I want to contribute to certain packages and said I would. So fuck you social life. Fuck. You.
Ohhh and those fucking 'friends' that guilt trip you into seeing them because "you haven't seen me in ages 😢😢" there's a reason for that Barbra (keeping her identity secret) I'm fucking depressed and tired. Fuck the fuck right off.8 -
Why the fuck people advertise themselves as 24h service if they work 9..17?! I need a fucking plumber to change leaky toilet seat. Called over ten different guys, and, guess what? They don't give a shit!
Meanwhile I used to have clients calling in the middle of the night or early in the morning. And I DON'T work 24/7.
What's fucking wrong with this world where you have to study long years and buy pricey tools and be available to the client all the time, and on the other hand you don't have to even start a college, just have right tools and materials, and you have better job? I could become a plumber. At least my work wouldn't be outsourced to India...
Sorry you Indian guys ;-)9 -
Having a healthy body is good. I go trail running on the weekends usually 1200+ above Sea Level.
On weekdays I just go home and play video games or watch TV. On Friday nights, party with friends in the city.4 -
Allright, that was srsly cool!
We are doing family trips across Lithuania on weekends. This weekend we have visited a "gravity hill".
So basically here's what you do:
- drive your car down the slope, to the bottom
- stop the car. Leave at neutral
- the car itself starts moving.. UP TO THE HILL!!
I was sceptic, but ffs, it took my car less than 2 minutes to reach 25km/h from a point zero!!
I even tried once more with my engine turned off. The same thing happened :)8 -
After a very busy week I’m enjoying my Friday evening with a nice glass of Tullamore, a few slices of my medium cooked housekeepers roast and some vintage-ish music videos on the projector.
Because of homeoffice I forgot how good it feels to be exhausted.
Enjoy your weekends everyone🥃
And don’t even think about commenting some shit about Lana, she’s a-fucking-mazing😬13 -
my family is fucking weird. and by weird I mean we have nothing in common, like people make make milk baby jokes and I am like "that totally makes sense!".
anyway my self proclaimed luddite sister and her annoyingly hipster husband recently purchased 300 acres of land in the middle of fucking nowhere with an old farm house on it. my family is always bugging my wife and I to come out and visit on the weekends. so last weekend I relented and we went out. apparently their idea of a good time is wandering through the woods ( I guess a trip to microcenter was to much to ask?). fast forward and I am now covered. COVERED in chigger bites. it is so bad that I have had to shave my legs then cover them in allow & lidocaine and wrap them up in gauze. FUCK THIS SHIT🤕😤🤕9 -
I think the next person who says I just was born with a “smart brain” I’m going to fucking rip out their throat. The absolute nerve to say that. They had no idea how much I have had to struggle to get here. I’ve worked my fucking ass off because I’m actually kinda a dumbfuck. I probably got black out drunk most weekends of the second half of high school and throughout college.
No, I don’t have a fucking “smart math computer brain” u narrow minded nincompoop. I just chose to be smarter than you bc I worked harder. Get out of my face and go make yourself useful since u clearly don’t have the capacity to contribute anything intelligent to our society.40 -
Another unrealistic deadline from our non-software developer PM.
He agreed to client upon delivery of a complete system consisting of 4 micro-services in Node and 4 front-end Angular application integrated with each micro-service accordingly.
Project Delivery date is December 31. I have told him It is impossible to deliver complete solution on December 31.
Now he wants me & my team to come to office even on weekends.
What an idiot !5 -
When I started off working on this particular project under a new technical manager, I used to love working overtime because the work and the problem we were trying to solve was really interesting. My technical lead was also a really awesome dude and I was able to learn a lot of things under his guidance. A couple of times, I didn't even mind working on the weekends too in case we wanted to meet some strict deadlines. I wanted to make sure that my team's brand name does not get spoiled and we deliver on what we promise.
It was all good until all the management started taking our overtime and weekend work for granted. It took me some time to realize this. Now it almost became a part of standard expectations. It was getting irritating. Managers could see this uneasiness but chose to do nothing.
The work increased, so did the team and the communication channels. The newbies in the team now worked overtime and on weekends. And everybody started acting as if it was normal. That's when it stuck me that I am responsible for inculcating this unsustainable and life sucking culture in the team. I stopped working overtime and started questioning the set deadlines, often asking them to postpone things. Management got furious and changed their focus on the newbies who'd work overtime, often rewarding them to reinforce the behavior.
I tried undoing it, asking managers that the team will not work on weekends. There was friction and managers would agree but the old bad habited cultural spore would pop up tume and again and the team would go back to the regular overtime and working weekends thing. As more time passed, the managers would circumvent me and start talking to others in the team, giving them work and deadlines directly because I started to say 'No' when I felt the need to do so. I tried to protect some folks in the team who would not be able to speak up but were frustrated. I started caring less about the team's brand and more about colleagues who were suffering due to such unethical (and illegal?) practices being normalised in the team.
Trying again and again to get back to 'normal', I failed everytime. Unsure of how far I'll be able to go on with this without getting severly burnt in the process and seeing no respite, I decided to move on. I put in my resignation two weeks back and want to start a fresh in another company.
I feel I am responsible for bringing this into the team without realizing the repurcussions of my working overtime. Staying in the team for more than 3.5 years, I could actually feel how managers have no fucks about your personal life and work life balance (despite showing oh so much concern about the well being of my family) and would reward anyone who works as per their whims and fancies. I wish I never get to work for a management such as this.2 -
Having a job helps a lot when you've just had a really bad breakup. The work distracts you from the shit you're going through for at least 10 hours everyday. But the weekends become really depressing.3
-
Worked nights and weekends for a month to launch v1 of a fixed cost client project(ie, we lost money). Launched it successfully with a few 15 hour days at the end. Three days later the client tells us they are outsourcing the rest of the work to India.
Completely felt spurned like I worked super hard to impress a girl and then she ran off with some other guy.6 -
I hate my freelancer life.
1. No weekends
2. No particular time to close
3. Work for 12 to 14 hours without sleep sometimes
4. Keep explaining the dumb clients about how development is not wordpress.
Its all fucked up. I have no life.
My average Lines of code this month is around 700 LOC/day. Whereas the average that showed on internet is 100 LOC/day.
I have choosen a hellish life.10 -
My social life consists of spending much of my free time with my girlfriend, seeing my close family on weekends and meeting with a few friends from time to time.
It's enough for me and since there's not much of it, it isn't hard to "balance". Whatever that means.
Seriously tho, "social/work life balance" is subjective. It depends on what you need to feel good and happy. What works for some will not work for others. Don't try to push others into being social when they don't want to. Don't give me that "you need to go out more" crap. I don't. I'm fine just like this. I prefer to stay home and see a movie with my girlfriend.
That "people need to be social" mindset made me feel bad about myself for too long because I'm just not like that and people keep pushing that idea into my head. I'll go out with you when I feel like it, don't push it. Stop asking me every fucking weekend ffs.2 -

Human memory is fascinating. It’s interesting to think about the events that helped shape you into what you are. And how sometimes those events are exchanges with people who probably never gave the moment a second thought, but fundamentally changed how you relate to others.
For example: In ninth grade, I became friends with a group of seniors. Spent every lunch period together, auditioned and landed a part in a play to hang out with them. We never hung out over the weekends, but my dad had died two years before and I didn’t hang with anyone on weekends.
Then at the end of the school year, I’d actually got my mum to buy me a school yearbook and was super excited to have my friends sign it. But when I asked them to, one of them furrowed their brow and said, “Amy, we’re not really friends...”
And I haven’t trusted friendships since.
Anyway, for anyone who needs to read this right now:4 -
I am a senior Android dev, and I have an old colleague (iOS senior dev). We work on the same project, but in every estimation session he pushes a lot on the lower side: he estimates 4h a task that normally takes 6h or 8h, and the reason is that he has no social life. Right after work he starts working again from home (I can see all his commits), he also works almost entire weekends. I would say he works as average 12/13 h per day.
I don t want to work extra time (unpayed).
About him, it is his life, so I don t care...but at the same time this makes me pressure. I care a lot about quality of code, and I don t want to sacrifice it just for catching up. Most of the people in the team know that he works a lot extra time.
How would you handle this?28 -
Before devRant:
* Sit back and enjoy the night watching series/movies*
* Chills in the weekends*
- It's nice to code at work
😊
After devRant:
*anxiety building up*
*start sweating*
Should I code all time?

When I get home I'll start a project7 -
I still hang out with my friends that I have known since we're in elementary school. The whole gang just had dinner and beer at a pub last night. We usually hang out on Friday or Saturday night. Then sometimes on weekends at someone's place cooking meals, playing games etc.
I also hang out with my gf at least one day a week. The activities are *censored*.
Apart from that, the rest of my life is work life.
I won't say my life is very good but I can't say it's terrible. 🤔1 -
I dual boot windows and Linux. I use Windows primarily for light gaming on the weekends.
Somehow, the windows updates have successfully managed to break my grub menu, and my Linux partition is booting into Grub Rescue mode.
Right now tolerating the windows updates, which have been painfully going on for the past 2 hours now. Later, I'll have to deal with fixing my Linux partition boot.5 -
Turns out the super urgent issue that I was working on even on weekends is actually over a year old ... great!1
-
We are forced to work on weekends because the management and the project manager loves to kiss the ass of our clients. I was even scolded by working from home.
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.
ITS NOT FUCKING FAIR THAT WE HAVE TO SUFFER AND SHOULDER THEIR INCOMPETENCE IN MANAGING THIS FUCKING PROJECT.
Damnit. God Damnit.5 -
This is kind of personal but wait for the conclusion.
I'm having bad migraines. I used to have them like 10 years ago and recently they came back. The only way to stop an attack is to lie down in a dark room for a few hours and then it's back the next day. CT scan shows nothing. My neurologist shrugged and prescribed some meds. They sometimes take the pain from 8 to 6 on a 0-10 scale, sometimes they do nothing. I stopped working on the weekends and it got better, no more migraines on Saturday morning. So I took few weeks of time off and not a single migraine until the last day.
My shrink said I'm allergic to work.13 -
I've had my share of "Hey you know computers, right?".
When I was getting my degree I drove a taxi on the weekends.
My boss calls me:
"Hey, my laptop is acting weird, could you have a look?"
Curious; I ask what it's doing.
"There's a pair of sunglasses covering the entire screen. Maybe it's a bra, I don't know."
Wtf?
When I left the taxi at his house, I had a look. I start the computer, Windows boots up, and sure enough, it looks like a pair of sunglasses is covering the screen, kind of.
I also notice a crack in the screen from top to bottom.
"So what kind of virus is this?!"
He felt stupid when I told him what the problem was. I ordered a new screen and replaced it for him and told him not to sit on his laptop again. 😜3 -
Happy International Worker's/Labour/May Day! Let us all remember those that fought and died for our rights and got us weekends, 8 hour work days etc.3
-
It's Monday and I didn't feel very good last weekends. Time to go into zone and code. Any poor soul who decided to buzz me shall be ignored.11
-
Little self control when going out on weekends. It really drops productivity the next week. But it's sure is fun :)1
-
Finished downloading lots of tutorial videos. Now time to watch all of this. This is like Netflix for me. I don't watch much Netflix instead I watch lots of tutorial videos and practice them. Skills development rather than Netflix and chill. 😀5

Why is it so hard for people (especially managers) to learn to work smarter not harder....
FIX THE GODDAMN PROBLEM CORRECTLY... THE FIRST TIME SO WE DON'T HAVE TO KEEP FIXING ITS BLOWUPS ON WEEKENDS....
AND STOP HIRING MONKEYS THAT JUST KNOW TO PRESS BUTTONS RATHER THAN DESIGNING FULLY FUNCTIONAL SOLUTIONS THAT DON'T BLOW UP OR LEAVE A TRAIL OF SHIT BEHIND THAT I NEED TO DECIPHER N CLEANUP....2 -
236 lines of code in main doing like 400 things that should each be their own function DX
Fucking legacy projects
This is why I drink on the weekends4 -
It annoys me when restaurants provide an online form for reservations, put in their disclaimer that "no reservation = no table", but when you make the reservation things go wrong.
For starters: their infrastructure not working on weekends (while they are open on weekends), them doing manual instead of automatic validation of a reservation, them not even knowing how to manage their own reservation system (which gives me the idea that they purchased some random reservation software).
I ended end having to call them about my reservation, they had a confused voice at the phone while they were navigating their own reservation software and ended up saying "Yeah ok table is booked, bye". I understand they're stressed out but come on, I don't think this is a modern nor graceful process. If you're boasting about having a reservation form, then at least live up to it. It reminds me of another restaurant where I had made a reservation online and when I got there, they told me "Next time book by phone please, we're not used to our software". For *********** sake.
Bah.1 -
Need to have APIs ready, worked weekends of my own time still not done, why won't my boss get bums on seats to help -.-6

Finally got through a second interview with a company that won't abuse me(working late nights, early mornings, and weekends for months now) on Thursday! They even said I did a good job and they like me! Most intense waiting of my life for a call back!2
-
Here it goes,
So there I was a Linux enthusiast stuck in a windows job for about 3 years. I would spend my weekends doing Linux related tasks for my personal amusement, while I spent my week doing windows maintenance and development (partially) professionally.
It was about 2014 I started building an openstack cluster at home and i was so stoked! I searched for openstack summits or meetups and for my surprise there was an openstack meetup in my town. Holly 🐄 I said.
The date of the event came and I left work earlier to attend the meetup.
There , I had a talk with the meetup organizer/speaker and he told he was interested in what I was doing and that they were going to open a job in the next months.
A few months later still at my boring job I got an email from him for an interview.
Everything went just about right...and here I am a Linux systems engineer doing everything I love for a living... -

I hate the fucking weekends.
Stuck in a family gathering where no one gives a minuscule shit about me or my comments.
No one available on discord to chat while in the midst of this depressing environment.
fuck meeeee... -
Frustration at its peak !!
So the CTO of the company I recently joined, whom I considered to be cool personality of all the open culture in the office and open communication, seems to be all wrong.
Few days back he suddenly dropped a mail to all the tech team members mentioning that we need more streamlined process in the company and many more blah blah stuffs... to which all of us agreed.
But. But. But. The last line(small font size) mentioning that from now onwards we need to come on Saturdays too until further notice. I mean WTF !!? Seriously.
But today in stand-up when one of the guy asked the agenda, he just tossed the question saying that we need to be more active attending "client tickets". Goddammit. We are devs, not tech support.
To this one of the other dev, said the exact same thing that was going in everyone's mind. Call the team that are required on Saturdays. To which his reply was, " Come on Saturday, we will speak then".
I was like 👏👏👏
P.S. Not that we are not ready to come on Saturdays, but at least take consent of all the members in the team, if you all babble so much about open culture and shit. We have friends and family too to have fun with, and need to take little rest on weekends.
And most importantly, tell us some firm reasons to be there on weekends, not just "You have to come, because we said so!"
Period.2 -
I feel like adding a new section to my contract mentioning that any uninformed delay in response, payments, or material transfer would cost an additional fee per day (except on public holidays and weekends).
Any thoughts?2 -
How to deal with situations when in work people are overstepping personal boundaries too much?
My situation is that 2 months ago I started working in a very small startup and it currently consist of 3 ceos(main ceo, marketing ceo, product manager) and 3 employees (backend, android and ios).
What I currently dread is tea breaks. There is one at monday before work which lasts for 1 hour. And there is another one at Friday after lunch which lasts 1 hour again. I hate these Friday talks about "what are your plans for the weekend" which then triggers a circlejerk of ppl trying to impress each other about what they are going to do on their weekends. Same happens on mondays they circlejerk about how their weekend was amazing.
My situation is that I came to this country just to get skills and make shit ton of money when Im at it. Besides my fulltime work, I also am freelancing part time in my previous gig and also Im managing 2 other hobbie projects. I like to keep myself occupied during weekends so they usually consist of shopping/pc repairs/gym/working on my hobbie projects.
So basically when I tell them what I've done over the weekend the ceo's don't seem to be impressed so they start suggesting me to do something else. I completely loose any motivation of sharing my personal life when they start telling me what to do with my life.
I don't feel like exploring the city or meeting new people since maximum Im going to stay in this country is 6-9 more months. Then I'm probably going back to my own country.
Anyways even overall, I started dreading this companies culture. The politeness is so fake. For example there is an employee which has worked 3 years for them and the ceos haven't even increased his salary. I joined 2 months ago and I get paid more than him! They dont value loyalty at all since immigrants can be replaced easily. Another example: 2 weeks ago it was my birthday and no one from ceos even shook my hand, for them it was normal to just say happy bd during a standup.
So fking weird. I feel like I'm seeing redflags every day and not sure how long more I can stay here.5 -
First-time goona work on frontend(my worst nightmare).
That too Angular.
That too on a file containing 900 LOC.
That too with no proper naming, variable names x,e, obj.
That too with no comment.
Cant take help as I am the lead(name-sake, small team, I have 6month more experience than others)
I have 2 days(thank god for the weekends).
Fuck...Fuck...I missed writing CLI apps.7 -
My friends do it for me, so does my wife.
It helps that my coworkers are my friends and they are devs, so there is that.
Other than that my phone would usually rang during the weekend nonstop with shit to do. I normally tend to stick to being at home with my wife and child.
My city is strange in that everyone and their mothers parties every weekend and people are usually friendly enough to involve everyone with anyone during the weekends. I like and dislike that (loud shit annoys me)
My dear boss is a weekend alcoholic, so there are null chances of making us go to work and if they do they let us chill during the work week.
Not only that, but the entire IT dpmnt is really friendly towards one another. We are one big happy family(we never fight with one another, not even the sys admins/network dudes.1 -
FUCKING SHIT WINDOWS YOU MOTHERFUCKING SHIT OS!!!
Everything on our server ran perfectly, but Windows had to fucking update the shit out of himself!! There isn't even a simple option to stop Windows from updating itself automatically.. You have to fucking change your Windows registry to prevent this shithole!!!7 -
Manger gives kudos to an engineering team for working weekends to hit a deadline he set three months ago... Isn't this just celebrating shit process?4
-
Lets remind someone that weekends are NOT for not coding
(props if you recon whose rantfeed that is)1 -
Recently, I have planned out my weekends to learn new stuffs.
And guess what, since I needed a project to start with, I have taken devrant related projects.
Example: Writing a python library as devrant api wrapper.
I have few other stuffs to learn too which I will begin once I finish this. That too most probably will also have some relationship with DevRant.. -
My current job makes me want to question my life choices.
Its a complete burnout.
I do 9 to 6 never 6 though its always 7 or 730 come home exhausted, and still on almost all days need to attend to customers after hours. Customer meeting at 8.30pm are quite consistent occuring. Being a developer, debugging meetings I can understand to a certain extent, but why the f i am preparing quotes and pitching products.
Want to prep for new job boom no time left to do so other than weekends.4 -
So what's up with bosses and employees that sporadically ask you to respond fast (like in the hour) to any request even though it is not an emergency? I feel like 50% of the people I work with are constantly in fireman mode, but never stop to think why they work like this.
When it comes to implementing helpful processes or improving shitty processes, I always get the "we don't have time, we are overbooked for this quarter." We never have time to improve and it fucking sucks.
Also, stop bothering me at 9-10 PM or during the weekends you bunch of no-lives. Maybe work smarter and less often?
It honestly makes me less motivated to work and depresses me a bit. I'm starting to hate my job.2 -
I made my passion my job, programming servers & web dev. Although it has been productive economically it has sucked the fun out of programming servers for me...so as a way to rediscover my passion I'm giving game dev a try. After a couple of weekends playing with a game engine this is what I've got, a monkey dev with a suit that jumps from project cabinet to project cabinet avoiding hazards, drinking coffee and trying to make some money (someone told me I should express myself and I took that personally).
I'm pretty much done but the hazard placeholders (a box and an arrow) don't convince me so I wanted to see if my fellow disenfranchised developers had some ideas of what my developer should be avoiding/being hit by, preferably something I could draw easily since as you can see I'm not much of an artist although I've also though of just words falling like "deadline" or something.
Anyway any feedback is welcome, take it ez I've never drawn anything more than a stickman and this is my first attempt at something playable. Small Rant plus question. Happy Monday.13 -
When you're the one that works over holiday weekends while the people responsible for fuckups and delays enjoy their time off.3
-
So I am working 12+ hours a day so as to finish the story assigned to me in the sprint.Turns out after completing the tasks allocated to me,I am given the stories of the people of way higer designation than me just because they are working for 8 hrs a day and therefore don't have the bandwidth to do their own tasks...So I have to come on weekends too,to finish my tasks and their tasks without getting anything extra in return....🙁😶😐😭4
-
Sh*t. I think I'm going to lose my job bc the CEO thought I was an expert on React even thought I specifically told him I wasn't. I worked at least 12 hours everyday, sometimes including weekends for 4 weeks now. And still got yelled at for not being an expert.
If you tell your manager: "I only used this tech in my spare time", would they expect you to be working at expert level?
I'm very confused and seems like noone is understanding my side.
Feel like sh*t rn because I really need this job because I'm broke but I dont know how to say to the CEO that I warned him and the team lead that I was not an expert. And yet, they treat me like one....10 -
2 job offers on table.
One, where I'd to work on multiple technologies, comfortable timing i.e 6 - 7 hours a day. Enough time to do personal projects.
Other, I'd to work on single technology stack, but more complex and large projects. Good for architectural and design pattern knowledge. Better pay, but stressing work hours like 8-10 hours daily. Might be on weekends as well.
Help me out!18 -
Two years of my life I've kept in this project, sacrificed many weekends and peaceful thoughts ! worked my ass off to be an impact in the team and in delivering project...in spite of all that I still can't get ON SITE and all I get is some fucking bullshit appreciation from PM which he didn't even cared to tell one on one ...I hate my f**king life ! 😥😢2
-
Do, as many of you fellow developers, I have a social pressure to do something with my life over the weekends, instead of geeking out or reading new best practices ..
So I finally decided to go see the Irish Curragh regatta organized by the Irish in Barcelona association ..
Nice and sunny Barcelona, besides the sea ..
Came home after three hours with a sun stroke, lobster face, completely blind despite the sun glasses, and with a terrible dizziness .. on my bike!
And they wonder why we spend time with our computers at home ..1 -
Does anyone else ever stop themselves from working on a side project on the weekends? Like I spend 5 days a week coding, and I try to take the weekends off just to balance my life, but I have this feeling in the back of my head that I should be working on something. Should I start smoking pot or something?7
-
Recently replaced project lead sends repeated harassment emails about “blown timeline.” Current PL says don’t worry, tells former PL to back off. I bust my ass 12+ hr / weekends and finish. Former PL says he was just pushing so I wouldn’t have to work so hard. Fucking managers.1
-
Working hours basically never end.
Pair that with a very tight schedule and you have the perfect recipe for working from 9AM until 1:30AM everyday including weekends (what are those again?)3 -
A friend of mine stayed over and had to leave early. Idiotic as I am I set the alarm an hour earlier than necessary. Now that he's left there's no way I can go back to sleep again, so I've had plenty of time to track translations in p5.js, while my GF's sleeping. Aaah, aren't weekends wonderful?2

It's been 3 busy weeks. Had so much to rant about, but I could lurk at best.
We had 2 big features coming to 2 different projects. I told my boss it's take 3 weeks for the one I was working on. The guy working on the other one, said he only needed 1 for his. Guess who got labeled as negative, worrying too much over nothing, and so forth? Especially since a "much more complex" feature would take just 1 week!
Whatever. Fast forward to this week. I was done by tuesday, including testing of both features and deployment. By wednesday, I had even a good looking documentation. Everything was ready. EXCEPT. The 2 features have to go live together, due to various reasons. Guess who ia still a ling way from completing his task? Gueas who asked to postpone his deadline by 2 weeks? Guess who's gonna have to work on weekends for no extra pay?
Guess what? I know how to give an eatimate, and I rather be "negative" and schedule 1 or 2 extra days to be prepared for hiccups and what not rather than having to waste my free time for nothing.
FFS. -
when a client agrees on a 23 working day timeline, two days after contract signature emails you they need it in 4 days and that it's a matter f life and death! :@3
-
So today (as of 5 min ago) marks a great day for my personal projects! I just got my embedded systems Flash memory driver debugging on my PC in Visual Studio, talking directly to the REAL flash chip, WITHOUT being tied to a embedded target! It's glorious. I can finally debug and write tons of tests without having to worry about the constraints of my embedded system. Ahhh. All the pieces I've needed to build this have slowly come together over weekends, and it feels so good to have this tool in my arsenal now! Great day indeed.
-
Insufficient food which caused many of us to go out to find some. Unfortunately most shops are closed on weekends and I ended up went home and continued my hack at home.
-
So the guy I replaced as the senior dev on my project (because he was lazy) is now trying to give me advice on how to cleanup my code.... This is the motherfucker who blatantly copies and pastes from one library to another and pushes the code without doing ANY testing and so I had to spend many weekends cleaning up his pile of shit code, and now I have 3 new tickets labelled 'style updates' that he wants me to merge in.... Fuck him, I'm not merging his code4

# NEED SUGGESTIONS
I am working on a secure end to end encrypted note taking web application. I am the sole developer and working on weekends and will make it open source.
The contents you save will be end to end encrypted, and server won't save the key, so even I can't read or NSA or CIA.
So I wanted to know if the idea is good? There are lot of traditional note sharing apps like Google Keep and Evernote. But they store your stuff in plaintext. So as a user will u switch to this secure solution?14 -
Received a contact for a new job today, 3 months notice if you want to leave, 1 if they make you redundant. Working hours are 9- 5:30, but evenings, weekends, holidays can be requested with no extra pay or time off. Recruiter recommended I sign it within an hour of receiving it, before I had time to read it, despite them taking over 5 days to get it to me. Suddenly my new job is soured.6
-
Does anyone else feel they need to remind themselves to go to work tomorrow?
Or what they were supposed to work on?4 -
Anyone just have like a weekend where they stay up really late doing nerdy things or work on their personal projects? I sometimes find myself on certain weekends that I just work on a bunch of personal code, websites, or even if it is changing my accounts around.5
-
I probably dont balance it well. I spend majority of my day either reading code, reading about code, or writing it. I would say my balance comes on the weekends. I hang out with my girl more and I not in front of the computer as much. But even on the weekends I sneak in a few hours of code. My leisure time is literally sitting at a starbucks with my favorite text editor listening to a playlist and coding. That's like total zen for me.
-
Insomnia = developer problems. My body clock is broken because of graveyard shifts. I don't like night shift. It is killing my body. Weekends no work should be night shift too.1
-
So, I was visiting a friend and we hung out 2 weekends in a row with one of her friends. No sharing numbers, no communication other than being in the same general area as one another for a few hours on 2 differentweekends.
So with 1 mutual friend, guess who facebook recommended to add as a new friend?
Thanks mark1 -
The Online Marketers I work with sometimes ask how I know so much about certain things.
Well, while you guys were partying in your late teens/early 20s and playing sports with your friends, I was sitting home on nights and weekends learning about computers, networks and code.
It only sucks they make a shit ton more money than me and work about 4 hours a day.
At least I'm making more than most of my peers and probably 90% more than people I went to high school with.2 -
After watching YT-Videos about the Language/Framework/... , I start during a long weekends night with a fresh Spotify-Playlist. 😁
The few first days are always the most productive ones... Until you loose motivation... 😒
Do you hear music when coding? Sometimes I think, I could be way more productive when I just code without it. Do you agree?1 -
As if I took a break, and I am not working.
Now I work on the weekdays, work on the weekends.. and I am not allowed to give myself a week’s holiday.
What’s going on!?5 -
So another infamous code (or smart code) you decide, there's class 'error' in the template/html and here this genius is removing it and adding it back? is this even logical at any level,
I mean just hide() and show() would do the job6 -
So I'm at work most of the day developing project managment system for better efficiency but I can't seem to keep my electricity bill up to date. Now I'm looking forward to some free time because I got disconected and everything is closed when I'm home from work. Even when I do manage to get off on time my boss needs me on evenings and weekends.
Now it's just NO BITCH, i ain't got NO POWER!!! ^^ yeah!3 -
Friday: I have done a lot of work this week... Should take rest in the weekend
Saturday: Who needs rest? Let's learn new hobbies, watch movies, play games and have fun🤩
Sunday: I think I will take some rest today...But that series is so cool...
Monday Morning: Why did not I take sufficient rest the whole weekend 🥱🤦🏽♂️
Monday Afternoon: Slept for two hours in the office time😑2 -
The relative activity on devrant on weekdays is really less than weekends. Glad we have hardworking devs here.
-
That feeling when - one year after quitting Twitter - it’s the weekend and you finally don’t feel the pressure of having to have a side project, cool library, you name it anymore. I just enjoy my weekends and if I want to, I fucking watch Netflix 48 hours straight.
I genuinely feel that I am good enough at development that it won’t make a difference and my weekends are mine to spend. I have zero cool stuff on my GitHub and have never had any disadvantage because of that in the past 11 years of my career, so why even worry?
I officially achieved anti-imposter-Syndrome 😎3 -
Week : 52 ( Year 1 )
It has been a year since I started asking you how your weekends are.
Maybe I should feed all the responses to an AI and predict what will happen next in your life.
Anyway, how is your weekend going?
Previous Week : https://devrant.com/rants/110185855 -
For me is the same Friday than Monday. I do not know if it is good or bad. Maybe it is good because I do not hate my job or bad because I do not make so much fun on weekends. 😗😗
-
I started up on a project idea last year, worked on day in and out on weekends, hired an intern(remote) and he's joining full time with us. Also the product is live. Happy that I employed someone within first 4 years of career experience by our own savings. Just wanted to share this, wish me/us good luck.3
-
Anyone else get shit from their other half for working at home in the evenings/weekends sometimes? To make money to pay off the house? To save for our future? To finance their shopping hobby? Because I ruddy enjoy it!!!1
-
Short awnser. Find a damn hobby.
Mine's pool. Go to bars on weekends and play tournaments and drink. Be amazed how social you can be when you're enjoying yourself3 -
Once got into a corporate company, worst 3 weeks of my life. It was so depressing and the code was ugly and the people were like robots all doing overtime and coming on weekends. To top all that they were offering me 900 USD a month which is 1,100 USD less than what the same position i was in paid for in the competitor company.5
-
I've started to program for at least an hour a day minus weekends but I still will program on weekends just I usually take that time to relax and play games or watch stuff but I started so I can practice and learn, it does and doesnt feel like I'm doing a lot cause I'm doing small JS projects (like a quiz which was more in depth than I thought tbh) to build up to bigger ones. I just feel I need to get a better understanding on why i need to do things and when and just somehow learn better from my exercises and examples, which I can see going through making another quiz its helping my understanding a little. Idk I'm just throwing my thoughts down, lemme know what yall think

Is it normal for a student (17yo, high school) to have nearly no free time? I have to leave for school at 6am and come back nearly everyday at 17 to 18pm. And since I play two instruments I'm in class for them again (+3h per week) and I'm in an orchestra (+6h rehearsal a week). So basically I finally come home at 8pm everyday and I'm so fucked that I can't do shit anymore. The only thing I'm able to do is (and in mood for) is practicing music and programming a little (personal projects and stuff). In theory I'd have free time on weekends then but I'm too tired to do shit on weekend. I stand up at 4pm and go to bed 5h later.
How was your time in school? How much free time did you guys have (or are still having)? Music is kinda free time imo but I'd like to meet schoolfriends outside of schooltime again :(16 -
I took 9 days off. Two 3-days long-weekends included.
First long-weekend went in Holi celeberations.
Weekdays went in planning and executing trip to Vaishno Devi.
Second long-weekend went in resting because Vaishno Devi is a hiking pilgrimage of a total of 30+ kms and 650+ kms away from my house. Totally loved the trip, though. Always a pleasure.
After 9 days of leaves, I come back feeling somewhat mentally fresh and rested.
The very next day, I catch cold and fever. Whole body fucked up. Skull paining from sneezing and blowing nose too much. Body paining from weakness and little fever.
Now.. I don’t want to work at all. Even little work gives me stress. Even though I have time to complete it.
I mean 😪
What an unnecessary hell after 9 days of heaven.2 -
With my new server equipment, I'm almost ready to boot her up, but one issue:
I don't have all of it. I need PSUs, Heatsinks, and a chassis. Found a local seller on eBay, but they don't do shit on weekends 😐 COME ON I HAVE FUCKING WORK LIKE AN HOUR AWAY DURING THE WEEK -
After 3 weekends of headaches I finally managed to get the SD card reader to work.
Now, to understand fat...
A whole different story.5 -
Wrong place. . But ama rant
I think having a girlfriend and being a senior software engineer dont go together.
For the past 3 weeks I have a very terrible week product luanch after product luanch. . To top it up all product promotions keep coming left right center then you also need to support some system you wrote many many years ago because the company does want to hire support engineers. You go to office at 8am and leave 7pm some times 9 in the afternoon . There is no time to see your see your gf and weekends, its either you are working on some thing random. Try to explain that to her.. all she see are excuses not be with her. The moment I try to be unemployed I doubt if she can stay8 -
I kind of like how quiet it becomes around @ d weekends. Who doesn't have a few mins. to spare here in working time, but the personal and fam. time is sacred. Respect++ 4 dat =]

I'll answer this seriously, since every other answer just jokes about having no social life.
I used to introverted as fuck long ago. Now I enjoy a fairly decent, balanced social life. Here's some points that may help.
1) This is the most important point. Schedule your time with discipline. Especially if you freelance on the side like me. If you decided to finish a project, mark your calendar and get to it. No dawdling. If you decided to watch a movie, mark your calendar get to it. Decide that you will spend an X portion of your time with entertainment and Y with work. Don't let them overflow into each other.
2) Don't hate Facebook, instagram, WhatsApp and other tools. Okay facebook is shit. But he rest are just tools. You can use them to connect meaningfully or to follow shitty things and make your feed toxic. If this isn't your cup of tea, at least try using them on the weekends, you'll make new friends.
3) If your work requires you to work long hours and weekends ok often just quit. You decide what your limits are. I quit a similar toxic job and it's made a world of a difference.
4) If you have a significant other, establish communication rules and boundaries with them. It's perfectly fine to tell your spouse or boy/girlfriend that you're busy at the moment. It is equally all right to tell your work that ou aren't available because you're busy with family/friends.
5) Visit a gym and get your stamina up. You'll meet fun people. It takes a healthy body to have a social life or you'll just be permanently tired.3 -
Everytime I applied long leave, my client and PM will plan for important feature, but they say start the sprint and for other new people i have to give KT, and they will take care. I know how that will screw up the system. So at the time it's nightmare late night at office, in office time KT, no weekends, stand-up for 1hr(every time QA will ask, what we get after this sprint). Stupid clients changing the requirements after stand-up.
Everytime code base screwed and need to refactoring. So as much as possible core functionality I'll complete and only bug fixing for newbie. I hate those days. -
I work under a highly toxic boss who expects me to work on all 7 days and give most of the time to the company. He makes us work on public holidays and weekends as well. We are literal slaves of him.
I had planned to leave on december this year , but in the aprils appraisal i got 116% hike and i got lot of esops and retention bonus. And retention bonus needs to be returned if not in employment till next june. Now i am crazily stuck and have become an official slave of him. Now i am neither able to leave the company, nor able to stay. And after accepting the money, Everything is in his hands. Now he is acting like he owns me as an object.
Guys kindly guide me on what to do.2 -
So at work I still haven't gotten enough time to try/learn Docker/Openshift...
Should I just login on weekends to play with it, create some small projects to see how it all works?
One part of me says it my boss really want me to learn it, then he should clear the time for me.
The other part is like "I'm learning this for my own good and it might be fun since I'll finally be doing something new... And then I'll be the smartass on this too"5 -
I'm on a project that has been off the rails for a few weeks. We're no longer working off tickets/the scrum board. Clients are asking for production servers yesterday.
Things are behind. Some people are working nights and weekends. I'm one of the people who are vary vocal about not working over time and I haven't worked a single night or weekend yet (we're salary exempt too; no extra pay).
I even bought up in a meeting how I was not happy about people being guilt tripped for not working over (our PO messaged me out of band a few weeks back telling me my teammates would appreciate me putting in more effort).
I agreed to work this Sunday and already regret it, even though they said there'd be compensation (without mentioning what that compensation is). I was also told everyone is doing it and that's not true either.
In my 18 years in IT, I've worked at ~ 13 companies. This one is in the bottom 3 for sure.2 -
So as the only developer and maintainer of a CRM at work, the management finaly found a sysadmin to aid me on production side. This way i don't have to do maintenance during weekends. The new assigned sysadmin contacted me, telling me he needed the whole DEV repo & & DB so he could start improving the CRM. I blocked his request saying we need a meeting to set rules and concider if we need him as a developer. Note that management didn't inform me of his visit. After this, he sends a mail to management telling them i don't want to work with him???? I got a feeling that management wants to replace me, but i realy don't want to let go of this project. What are your thoughts on this situation? Should i stop guessing, and straight up confront them with my thoughts? Or see how things work out...
-
Can I just say, I am NOT a fan of fixing things or doing things for people because THEY work on the WEEKENDS. I mean like I'm chilling and maybe working on some stuff or having my me time, listening to some music or whatever and that's when you have someone from an internal team in your company (not my team) come to you with a bug or some FAVOR because apparently they're working even though it's a SUNDAY. It's just ruins your whole freaking mood.
Idk if I sound cocky or whatever but I just had to let this out.3 -
Woke up early. Drank coffee and my mindset is so ready to do some work. After 30 minutes I'm so sleepy like a literal crash down and will sleep now. Body why you do this? I hate night shifts. It destroys my body clock. I hope weekends and mall hours are night shifts as well.
Also I hate company internal system project when I am assigned to a client and the client don't know that. I can't tell it to the client and my company can't tell also because my hours are 100% committed to the client. -
When your co-dev keeps forgetting to push his code to the remote repo and you're stuck during the weekends without his new changes and he is not working1
-
How do you guys motivate yourself to work out.
Its been 2 times... First i tried 2 years ago in Aug 16.
Back then , my college started and i got busy in that so left the gym after a month. I blamed myself, the tiredness it gave me and lack of friends/work out partners there at that time.
Second time, i tried more hardly in jan 2018. This time, i had my gym companions, nd i was doing better. At the start i was handling the stress well, since it was just the clg and gym, then came along the internship, but i still handled it. But after the internship, i felt the need to up my skills and do more personal projects which was still not happening because of the gym tiredness. And then came along a scholarship into one of my favorite courses, and then the papers, and then.... A lot of 'other' things started happening, so i leftthe gym jn may 18.
I am concerned about a few things. 1)These days, I am usually entangled between entertainment, clg work, self learning/ scholarships. I used to do gymming in evening hours after clg and self learning on weekends, but now i am like everyday am straight to home from clg, onto bed, into the sheets, laptop on, and am doing scholarships task till late night. I fear that my work is now so important that i cannot push it to weekends. How do you guys manage learning and maintaining your body together?
2. Gym is a sick environment. We see pumped up people with 8% body fat , skin sticking to their ugly muscles while i am there , juggling my belly fat on the treadmill. For 2 months straight i was just doing the cardio. It gave me some results i guess, my belly got a Little loose but no one really saw much changes. I am not concerned about other people or fast results particularly, but when combined, i feel like am going to a royal house party everyday, where everyone except me is a beautiful king or queen , except me, a lowly peasent . Those pumped up kings are beating their bodies and getting more beautiful, while i am trying to beat these dead belly meat which won't flatten up .
Meh.2 -
A typical (Covid) day (for me) being self employed. I tend to start working at around 8am, only break to make coffee, and by 3:30 in the afternoon I fall asleep til 5pm. Then I get some food, play my bass, mess around in garage band, drink a bottle of wine, watch some crap movie, go to bed around 1:00am rinse and repeat. I never work weekends anymore. Interested to know your Covid day,.5
-
New job, new city, my job is very good & coworkers as well, but since I'm an introvert I'm not good at making new friends, I'm not socializing other than talking to my colleagues at during office hours. After office I come at my flat and do nothing wish I was good enough to have friend. Or some girl to hangout with its so lonely during weekends.3
-
So here is an interesting story.
The company that I work went in collaboration with another company and as my company is a small startup we had only 2 employees. We had to do 2 different projects during the collaboration period.
I was put in-charge of an android application (At that time I had no experience of android development and it was one of their most important project without any guidance)
I was doing work of two companies and getting paid by one and I was getting shit from the company that we were collaborating with.
As a developer I value tasks and deadline but the company issued a new rule that I should stay in the office from 9-6 (strictly) which I didn't oppose. But the senior developers here stay strictly 9-6 but work only for about less 2 hours a day and get valued more.
I used to love working on weekends improving myself in the process but working over time is not valued by the company.
( BTW I completed their project in about 1.5 months ) -
"Long" time lurker here... Doing my master's thesis, nothing works (Gaussian Mixture Models hate me) and there's less than a month left until opposition. No results, no working code, feels like I don't understand anything. I can't relax anymore, not even on the weekends. Several times I've just felt "Fuck it, let's just not do this", but I feel like I'm close to the finish line... Right now, I just wanna start working instead. I think.6
-
CTO: I want you to take up a side project and push it to production. Atleast 1 per quarter. Also, you have to keep making tiny enhancements to the website on weekends. And it would be great if you can mentor and help the other team with architecture. And, don't you feel itchy that the app you made in that hackathon is not used by any user? Productionize it. Don't forget to update me on your primary task at the end of biweekly sprint, that goes without said.

A long time ago in a decision poorly made:
Past me: hmm we're having trouble getting IT to give us a new build machine with the new compilers.
Past me: I know we'll just use one of the PCs that belongs to a member of the team to tide us over.
[2 months pass]
Present me: that's odd, Jenkins is really slow today.
[Several minutes pass]
Present me: holly shit fuck; it's building the whole weekends worth of builds at 9am on a workday and eating licenses like a cast away that suddenly teleported to an all you can eat buffet.
Present me: [abort, abort, for the love of fuck abort]
Present me: contacts IT, they can't find any problems, wtf happened.
Present me: discovers team member turned off his machine on Friday and builds had been stacking up all weekend.
Lessons learnt: disable power button on team members pc and hire a tazer guy to shoot whenever someone goes near the wall socket.
1 hour lost and no build results for the last 3 days.
It's looking like a bad morning -
Working on cool emerging technologies such as VR, AI or robotics. Or all of them combined. International environment with developers from all over the world. I find myself working at different locations, yet I'd spend all weekends and holidays at home. 6 K €/month + all travel and lodging expenses paid. Plus a culture that encourages innovation and, of course, ranting! :D5
-
so client asked to come on Saturday for code review for 3 hours and i went . then after 3 hours he asked us to sit for littler bit more. when we said we had plans already , he asked to come on sunday . is client legally or ethically right to ask us to come on weekends so that he can review the code .6

When the guy that works weekends can't spend 5 minutes over the last 4 days to deploy a website that is blocking his own tasks 😑1

double-clicking bugs in web application.
They keep happening and generate double actions.
Instead of fixing the bugs, I created a script that check periodically for double actions and delete them from db.
I also gave db access to first level support and the query to delete double actions.
So I can be free on weekends and avoid the stress of fighting for resources -
Just delivered most difficult project I had so far, despite all issues managed to deliver (on time). Had help from team but some colleagues only contributed with "I'll tell X and Y to do it".
Told my manager it was really hard for me and sometimes I had to work some hours in the weekends, once even entire weekend with no extra pay, just to meet deadlines.
My manager just told me in my performance review that I didn't deliver on time and compared me to the UX designer that delivers Figma designs on time for like 8 projects and never has to work overtime. I guess dev work is the same as Figma design around here.
Then manager proceeded to tell me that he wants what's best for me.
Safe to say no raise this year.6 -
The longer I go at this job, the more I feel unqualified to be doing it!
My boss is giving all these really fascinating ideas and things to get done... but he's not really describing it well on how to do it... just to do it. My creativity is being tested...2 -
One of our corporate clients insists that we push changes and updates to production on either Saturday or Sunday. I've worked weekends for longer than I care to admit now.
A major update that completely changes both the data model and UI is scheduled for deployment this Sunday.
Monday is going to be hell with support requests. -
feeling like shit at work because I'm not productive at all.... I'm a fullstack web dev and was assigned to create a java data importer with multiple sources, multiple scenarios and using various data types... What makes this difficult is that I'm not used to strictly typed languages, because I'm used to swapping variable types and nulling them down/whatever I need to do with them whenever I want. In java I need to assign the correct variable types, there are no asociative arrays . I've been fixing one issue this whole day. Litteraly one fucking issue. Maneged to fuck javas garbage collection even though it's supposed to be automatic. Fuck. I feel like I need to stay late, and program on the weekends to achieve anything with this assigment because right now I feel like I make 0 progress. Boss leaves for vacation next week for a week, and he's the other dev that theoretically should be working with me...4
-
When it comes to judgemental conclusion of people's acts, I've always been careful and maintain a total calmness because I never can really tell what influences such acts. The so called boss I'm working for, obviously has anger issues and I find it very difficult to tell what triggers such irritating habit. Unfortunately, it is uncontrollable by him. He releases it whenever it comes. I've tried as much as possible to avoid falling into the pit of false consensus bias - i.e, the tendency of assuming other people should think like me. I work my ass 50 - 60+ hours a week + weekends for his startup company without expecting much in return but he still feel people are not important to him. Nothing actually interests me anymore in the company and I feel quitting is a necessity for me right now - please, I need people's opinions regarding this.1
-
When all of the dev cycle process crap is done. So maybe 2-3 hours per week, not including the "underwear programming" on the weekends.
-
Project Managers who plan on the basis that weekends are part of the project plan, but specifically only for tasks that do not require them to be present
-
Start-up life be like: you know that DollyPartonSong "working 9 to 5"... yes, sing it in your head... Accurately describes my life... during weekends 😑1

How does everyone feel about morning and evening updates with a summary email detailing what was said in the evening call?
I have an attitude problem with not treating colleagues with respect (apparently) I emailed the concerned party and apologised profusely for my (perceived) behaviour and attitude towards them clarifying that there was no animosity and that I'm just a blunt person.
They responded with 🤔 u wot m8? Well actually, "it's been a stressful couple of months but theres no feelings that you talk to me or address me disrespectfully"
So basically, what happened (I'm a contractor) is I refused to work weekends for a day rate, or evenings.
And my managers boss has been salty after with me ever since.
Thing is they're talking to me like I'm a member of the staff? I don't even work for them as I'm sub contracted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I have had my resignation letter signed and attached to an email to my agency but I haven't sent it1 -
Feels like I have been in a dead end job on a dead end team without anyway to get out.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Pay is good though so guess I'll stay and just do my learning and non-team stuff on the weekends....
Seems like it's the only way out now...17 -
There are few layoffs in my company due to COVID-19 and so now there's 3 times more work then usual per employee and fucking senior manager keeps on threatening that if we don't meet the deadlines, they will get us fired as well!
Have to do overtime every fucking day, also even on weekends, my life has got all ruined and couldn't do anything about it as getting a new job in this time is going to be a pain in the ass as well!7 -
I hate it when I have to work o weekends because my boss is like: "yep this is critical and I am really reliant on you ;)"
I FUCKING HATE THAT WINKY FACE1 -
I'm working at a big furniture store on the weekends to earn a little bit of extra money during my computer science bachelors.
The only annoyance is that the job has absolutely nothing to do with programming...
Should I quit to try get an internship as a developer? What holds me back is a real lack of confidence & experience. I wanna get more into programming but I'm also scared I would suck ass in a real company, although I have already worked with a lot of differnt languages & paradigms during my studies.
What to do devrant?1 -
!Question
I see lots of rants here of bosses/clients screaming, imposing their authority, making people work during the night, weekends etc. Is it that common?
In my actual job, the few times my boss screamed to me, I was about "fuck this shit, I'll just do what he wants and go home at the right time. If they don't like it, just fire me. And laught silently when things goes wrong".
I've been afraid to get into the developer area and always be stressed out with too much work to do, people screaming and having to work on weekends.3 -
I think I am going through burnout.
How do I deal with it?
Joined a startup with crazy work culture in Jan.
Have been working 14 hours a day for months starting march 2020, and even that was only to barely keep up with my colleagues. I have been one of the top performer in my previous jobs.
since the beginning, It always bothered me seeing people working on weekends, and falling behind if I didnt, to not have time for anything else, but I started really hating it a couple of months back.
Work has slowed down a bit now, but I just can't do it. Cant focus and get even basic tasks done. Still getting by with last minute efforts but I hate it!
Dont have the guts to leave the job, but also realise I am not doing enough and will get kicked out eventually anyway.
What can I do, to get over this?15 -
I've a whole new respect for ElasticSearch. It's codebase is so insanely complex, that I'm seriously contemplating tracing out the flow on a big ass chart. Any suggestions on how you people work and debug so many asynchronous flows?
I have been working on a bug, for almost 6 days (to be read as 3 consecutive weekends), and the best I've done is, conceptually isolate where it's happening. I'm an open source noob, but I feel I've learnt a whole lot during sifting through ES' codebase. :)2 -
btw I made an instagram account dedicated for my tangram designs ( I do a new one each day for the gf to guess ( w/o the weekends 4 her ) and tought I might as well share them with the not so big world ).
Almost all of them are made by me ( I do copy some from the net if I got lazy or forget to make a new one ( I do them the previous day ) ) so hopefully some of them are not on the net already
If you are interested to check it out : your_daily_dose_of_tangram ( and yeah, I know... but we all do it to some extend either way ;) )1 -
Weekend Rant
----------------------
What do you do on weekends?
Me: [Proudly] Oh... I keep my weekends very productive by learning how to write "Hello World" in another programming language and adding it to my resume :) -
Dev Health Rant!
Hey guys, so I've been supper busy working most of the time and doing passion projects, very recently I've noticed eyestrain at the end of the day. Lights seem too bright and far away stuff seems a bit blurry, this doesn't happen on weekends when I don't look at any screen.
I feel like shit because of it, I can't go to the hospital since they are COVID crammed, I'm thinking about asking for a 2 week PTO to see if it subsides and buy some blue light filter glasses.
What do you think? Anyone in a similar situation?17 -
I think it was Mike Rugnetta (from pbs idea channel on YouTube) who once tweeted "worse weekends have happened to better people" or something to that effect.

Microsoft certifications... worth it or not?
MCSA (web applications, universal windows platform, MCSD (app builder), etc...
Currently I am stressing myself out for these certifications and all people around me either say it is worthless or it is VERY valuable. I hate exams, it makes feel sick, is there other ways to prove that I am a good dev? (I know I know... create your own apps, participate in interesting projects, but I do not always have time and enthusiasm for that. I want to have my evenings and weekends free from programming)5 -
How many days an hour do you real professionals actually spending writing code... Right now between work as a junior front end dev, class and an applied project for school my brain is mush by the middle of the week and I spend my weekends trying to avoid opening my laptop, I hope I'm just overloaded right now and that I don't feel like this when I graduate.
Im getting a little worried though.2 -
My co-worker X and I worked late nights for a project every single day including weekends, and our fucking senior manager invites X to his party and not me. Seriously.. does he even know I'm in the same fucking team?.
I mean yeah X did a great job working hard and shit.. but so did I.
I really hate my manager.
Fuck Him..6 -
can’t someone just take jupyterhub and nbgrader, polish them the fuck up and host them somewhere and make it available for people to use without having to go through hell just to set it up somewhere! jeez.2

Halfway mark reached. Just got on the train for the second early morning of three weekends. Soon I may rest. For a week. Then we go again 🙃
-
Ok, So I am just fed up with these project delivery dates. These are the most irritating aspect of any project.
My current project is already delayed 3 times, because of the optimistic biases of the team lead.
Developers were forced to work over weekends. The QA cycle is taking more time than the dev cycle itself, and it's very irritating waking up with a new bug in the JIRA notifications.
Everytime we reach the delivery dates, there will be multiple bug items on each and everyone's plate that you just can't release the product.
I want to know if anyone feels the same ? How does your management takes care of these delivery dates ?1 -
Why does my Windows PC work fine on Weekends and slow on Weekdays. I really don't get the logic. This happening after creator update. Anyone knows what type of bug/feature this is? fuck2

Can’t remember the longest “consecutive hours” session, but had a few work days that probably lasted 14 hours ( had breaks though )
Did however do 7 months of work days starting at 6am and ending at 5pm, but had two long breaks most days.
Also did a 21 day working streak once, skipping 3 weekends.
Now I work comfortably 😬 -

My employer is a subcontractor on a big and rather complex project, that already is way behind schedule and over budget (as these monsters tend to be). To get back some confidence from the client our principal moved an important milestone up two weeks. Which we protested against vehemently because the projected workload was already a very tight fit for the original timeline, without any reserve to speak of left. They wouldn't listen though...
The result? The whole team has to work the next weekends to have even the slightest chance of making the earlier timeline. Which is exactly what we told them would happen when they moved the milestone.
The worst? This isn't the first time this has happened while I worked on the project 😑5 -
How do you learn new tech things---large things like framework, language, etc? Books, online courses, instructor-led course, blogs, randomly poking around?
I buy way too many tech books and spend way too many weekends reading them.6 -
I work 100% as a studio admin (finding and fixing images for eshop while helping the photographer, keeping touch with other brands and their imgs and make order / returns to and from studio and raging over others not being able to create proper Excel files..) while I also study on 100% Webdesign via a university on distance. Today I got a call for a Jr.Dev (frontend) extra position (spare time and weekends work). Meeting is on Monday next week so the question is.. if I get it / take it.. should I continue with the study via the university or and the two jobs then or should I drop out, focused on jr.dev extra position while continuing working as studio admin until I can go full time dev? All thoughts and opinions are helpful ☕
Thanks 👍
Ps. Having all three isn't an option, I'm already behind the "having a life"-schedule.. as is.6 -
My weekends always end up in depression not because i know i have to work tomorrow but because tired of being alone even though i started the day with totally awesome content..

I need advice.
I'm going to apply for PhD this year, but here's the thing, I don't have a specific interest in anything.
This sounds weird but I only want to do thinking. Like solving problems.
I would have a paper coming out this month as first author, but we discovered some weekends of our algorithm recently and decided to postponed the paper (there are 4 professors on the project and one researcher), so I guess this will definitely affect my application.
Like, what shall I say even on the personal statement? That I have one active mind that just won't stop thinking? The very fact that everything is interesting to me made me not interested to anything.4 -
I would like to say I'm able to by taking decent breaks, and by seeing friends after work and on weekends, but by the time I leave work I usually am done with interacting with people, outside of perhaps messaging.
So in that sense, Discord had been my saviour in that I can stay connected to people, but in a way that doesn't bring other aspects of social media into it. -
Soo It is known, that seeing things from your past makes you remember distant memories, feelings, smells etc.
For example, if you play a song on repeat for a week, and then don’t play that song a few years, and then play that song you will then remember in detail the week, that is now associated with the song.
Sooooo does a service exist that allows you to watch past tv shows, in their original time slot, day etc.
I know a lot of streaming services have the whole old shows thing but non like i describe.
I remember growing up in the 90s, and early 2000s every day before school watching the kids game shows, before the news turned on or vise versa.. but it was a solid routine same shows, same times etc.. then on the weekends or after school the same thing...
Sooo if there was a way to stream the original scheduled programming for any given date, and channel that would be awesome, and it may even lead you to understand certain things, make new connections connecting the present to the past etc...
Just late night thoughts5 -
At first I got this crappy project which 400 users HAVE TO use but NO ONE WANTS to use - with ASP.Net MVC, ASP.NET MVVM (Yes, both!), KENDO MVVM, KENDO UI, JQUERY and not a single line of typescript or modern web framework...
After I told them, that was not why I was hired and not what I was promised, they told me in summer I will get this brand new project, not a single line of code written.
Every new project of my company in the last 2 years was in React / Redux / Typescript and ASP.Net Core WebAPI - So I invested a bunch of weekends to get into it to be able to lead such a new project!
Today I recieved a Email from my boss, that because "we have to be on the same stack as the sister-project" we will use jquery and kendo mvvm....
What the fuck... -
A whole year (weekends) for a stressful unpaid (they give data stipends tho) internship. I was looking for experience, but what have I gotten myself into.2
-
dear diary(a?), today I met san Pedro.
He broadened along some truffles...
might use them for the paella 1 of those weekends...
...or suffle... with IScream ... on top... mmmm
Aaaaanyway, thanks for keeping this a public secret 4 me =]
P.S. 4 any eventual intruder reading dis : have a wonderful and sunny weekend 2o!7 -
No better feeling than finding out you don't be working nights and weekends as expected for the next week and a half. #CrisisAverted2

For me the best way to get unstuck is to go for a walk outside the office and think in peace. I work for a small company and we all share a working space so the distractions are endless... Either someone's talking loudly on the phone, or they're asking me questions (and the headphones, for some reason, do not work as a do not disturb sign for my coworkers) so at times it's impossible to concentrate...
When I'm working at home on my own projects, usually on the weekends, I go for a brief swim at the beach. It works wonders.... -
I procrastinate till Wednesday and then I get this strong feeling to work hard on my shit but at the same time I get another thought that weekend is just 2 days ahead and you ll have stop it in the mid without completing as we rich people don't work on weekends, so we better start at monday but then i do nothing but sleep and the loop goes on 🥲🥲1

I had an introductory course on C during my engineering (using the Turbo C compiler). Got interested there and started learning on my own during the breaks between semesters. Mainly ended up doing basic things with VB 6, C, C++ and some Windows programming using a language called BCX Basic.
Then ended up being introduced to HTML, JavaScript and Java during my first job and ABAP in the next. Also managed to learn a little of Python in my spare time (weekends) along the way.
I still continue learning the basics of new languages in my spare time (planning to start with PHP next). -
First and foremost, keep clients and work colleagues (especially management people) out of your personal life as much as possible.
Communicate to the rest of the team and clients (if in a client facing role) when you will and won't be available. Also communicate your concerns about any unrealistic deadlines.
Most of the times, this is bound to be ineffective. So, keep phone on silent (or flight mode) at night and during weekends. Also don't call back in case there is a missed call from anybody from work colleagues.
I deviate from this only if there is a go live or similar activity going on. -
When I work extra hours on weekends, so I can finally take a break from Microsoft Word and write some code for a change. It's going on for a second week now, if not longer 😢
-
I just dont. I love my work so I work way to much: fulltime Job as dev project lead in a big advertisment Company, additional to that i work part time as a teacher in a school for it students (15h/week) and then I have 2 customers as freelancer for the weekends :)2

Weekends
Before lockdown: Yay...Weekend is here...Time to go for social events, hobby classes and have dinner with friends outside
After lockdown: Yay...Weekend is here...Time to attend social events, hobby classes online and talk with friends on video calls... -
I took a career transition last year and I'm starting to question my decision. I'm stuck.
I've only learned to hack shit together in my past jobs (except one freelance project where I pretty much learned most of what I now properly know), exposing me to bad practices. To make it worse, I lack fundamentals and basics so can't even write JavaScript beyond for loops without documentations.
Lately I've been pushed to take charge in structuring a project from scratch. I failed at understanding what exactly Webpack does mainly because it required knowledge of web modules which I still find elusive. I make time to learn basics in the evening or weekends but most of the time I'm taking home the internship work project that I, again, just need to hack shit together, depleting my energy by the end of day.
Now I'm at the stage where I need money, for which I'm thinking of applying for waitressing or entry-level marketing jobs. I'm shit scared that I'll never break into the industry and will just end up living day by day feeling unfulfilled.
I'm so tired of trying.2 -
Sandeepbalan hasn't asked us how our weekends are going. I really want to tell someone to fuck off.
Sigh.. guess I'll wait.5 -
I want to fire crucio on my office people. No specific reason, but I have seen them enough for this week.Thankfully , weekends are finally here.2
-
I pass my weekends working on 15 years of picture not classify .... Its 3am and im on it ... Jezuz cry
-
For a while my social life was fuck all due to death marches and poorly managed projects. I’d be so exhausted by the time the weekend rolled around that I just didn’t want to do anything.
Sticking to a healthy work schedule and prioritising family and friends after an 8 hour workday did wonders.
On weekends I just tell me wife that I want to look at technology x for a couple of hours and we plan our day around that.
Also, finding social events I want to attend like DnD made a huge difference. -
So a new project was assigned to me with Laravel. I don't know abcd of this But have to do within strict deadlines :(
Very much hectic weeks for me... waking up long nights,,,, working on weekends..
Hope so will soon grab on it and will complete task in less time.
Now am thinking does being developer is ok for long term. :( Sometime it really become very very hectic.. And How can I take less stress about the pending tasks.. I mean if something got stuck .. my mind will stay there until I finished/solved that off :(
Any advicess from those are in long run being dev2 -
"Most successful private project" would be an extension of the webeditor Brackets named brackets-swatcher.
The silly thing about this is that it started out from my own frustration with variablenames in variablefiles in Foundation and Bootstrap.
After a collegue of mine also used it he had a shitton of ideas how to improve and what he wants so i developed it on many weekends with many many beers in my belly.
Where we come to the conclusion - its for sure the ugliest project ive ever written (=> beer and jquery) and i hope i never have to touch the code again - but on the other side i never had bug reports despite the fact that alot of big websites had it in their "Top 10 Brackets Extensions" and many downloads from the Brackets Marketplace.2 -
Through out the week I break my head on embedded systems...
And fuck my brains out playing DotA2 on sea server with pinoys on weekends... -
Well the good thing about last week is that I helped my company get through their hurdles of getting their backend to work with their mobile apps. Though it's in the weekends, but hey it gets me paid.
I just hope that the PM would cut me some slack for not doing git commits properly. After all, we're not big in terms of company size, and if the PM is so anal about it, we can't move fast enough. As long as the PRs are reviewed and made sure that the web app works, nothing else matters.5
