Me: "I'm a programmer."
Pleb: "Great, because I have a problem with my pri..."
Me: "STOP! Last person who thought I was a printer support serf got strangled with the printer cable."
Pleb: "But it's a wireless printer."

Last hour of my job today:
Hardstyle blasting out of the speakers at full volume
Everyone drinking a beer
Boss coming in with "Fuck this shit we're gonna game!"
This is what I call a good end of the work week 😍33 -

Convinced my girlfriend to learn UI/UX design. She landed her first job last week and it's a good one :)
So proud13 -
My classmate accidentally deleted Recycle bin shortcut from her PC, i was starring at her, she grab my pendrive, ran to libraries Computer, copied recycle bin, and pasted it in her desktop,
And last but not least... She got Job in Oracle.23 -
Knowing that yours is probably the last job that will be automated, followed only by complete annihilation of humanity by artificial intelligence..5

Interviewer: So how long did you work at your last job?
Man: 30 years
Interviewer: and how old are you?
Man: 22 years
Interviewer: you're 22 and you have 30 years of experience that's not possible
Man: and you are looking for a junior dev with 5 years of experience4 -
Today is my last day at this job.
Can't tell you how happy I am to be leaving this place in about 7 hours.
Starting my new job in January, so I get 4 weeks of nice vacation/ family time.8 -
*fiction* At a job interview:
"We are looking for someoje with 4-5 years of exp. in plep.js framework"
"Yeah, I've worked a lot with it"
"How well do you know it?"
"Perfectly I think, I released it last month"1 -
Hopefully the last part of my job hunting for now! Had a good call with the boss and heard from the recruiter that I'm the preferred candidate because we had (the boss and I) a real 'click'.
It's now between me and one other person.
Man I am nervous! Will hear it today or tomorrow!8 -
Last day at my first job. Spent 7.3 years here.
Joined as a kid, leaving as a grown up man.
So many mixed feelings, and being an emotional person, if I were in office, I'd have surely cried.
Crazy experience. So many flashbacks all at once.8 -

Last Thursday: solicitation
Friday: got a call that I'm hired
Tuesday: signed contract
I did it, I just got my first job!8 -
Well I ended my interviews-adventure finally.
Applied for three companies:
- KindOfBigCompany
- BiggestCompany
- BiggestCompany2
I failed in the last two. But got the job in the first one.
The bittersweet sensation is that I got the job in the first one first and then got rejected by the other two so my last feeling is the rejection one. And I really liked BiggestCompany2.
BUT KindOfBigCompany is actually really cool and has a lot of benefits and also I'll earn much more than I currently am so I guess Happy Ending after all :D5 -
One of my favorite quotes:
"A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine"
Had to apply this liberally at my last job. Even had it posted at my desk for a time.1 -
I quit my job today, after 2 years as a developer. I can't remember the last time I felt so peaceful. I've yet to decide what I'll do instead. Wish you all the best, adios!5

HOLD THE FUCKING PHONE!
Just when I thought today was my last day at this job they tell me contract has been extended by another 5 weeks... Fuck yes! :-D5 -
Well today was a good day, after getting fired from my last job I got awarded in my current one. feels good to be appreciated 🙂3

I recently got my first job ever as a developer. And I don't know how long the feeling will last; but I have to say it's an awesome feeling to get paid for what you love doing! I hope you guys share this feeling with me12

Interviewer: One last thing, hope you are not married.
She: No, but how is that relevant?
Interviewer: Well because this job involves a lot of traveling you see...
She: Makes sense Sir. Also, I have a lawyer friend, in case you need any help...
Interviewer: What help?
She: Help with filing for your divorce Sir, as this job involves a lot of traveling...5 -
HR manager: we just realized we underpaid you a lot in the last 4 years, for all the job you are doing. You'll get 30% pay rise from now on.
Outer Me: thanks, great!
Inner Me: ....shit...
I got the raise, I looked for another job and found it in 4 months. 60% pay raise, better role.3 -
Well. Here is the story.

Haven’t posted here in a while, life has changed lots since last time. I applied to a new job in September/ October last year, called in for 1st round of interviews in December, got job offer in Valentine’s Day this year. I got a 42% Pay rise increase by going from private media company to governmental company.
Plus the annual pay and pension negotiations just got completed (all gov employees), so that’s a 1.55% payrise. And because I’m in an union, I might get another 1.24% payrise later this year.
So now I work at the National Archives of Norway. Which is just awesome.
Attaching a picture of my new desk, just missing the new 27” monitor I added on the left side.4 -
Today I feel like a monster.
Due to the optimizations/automatizations I have made to the processes in my job, some low level employees are not longer required.... Ever again.
Their last day of work was yesterday, but I'm still uneasy if this is how life is now. If every job will be removed to be made by machines.10 -
have an interview in 20 mins, this is the last round.. new job has 80% salary hike compared to current .. wish me luck guys!!!13

Last follow up rant for now on the Linux job hunting. Recruiter called and said that the employer is no longer interested in me. Slightly sad but hey let's keep the chin up and continue job hunting!10

I quit my job last week and I’m starting as a full time mobile developer in January. I’m so goddamn excited.
With no university degree, I’ve finally gotten an in as a developer!8 -
Whelp passed my last finals and graduating today with my new job starting next month. Thanks devrant for getting me through the last semester.7

I was at my last job for 13 years when they outsourced my job to India. They kept me on as a liaison - they said they needed a BS detector to make sure the hosting company was not inflating their estimates. 6 most boring months of my professional career.
As I was getting my resume together to start looking, a former coworker called. She was now an application dev manager and was putting together a post integration team. One interview later, I was hired. It was perfect timing.1 -
I've secured my first software developer job at a large bank in the UK after doing Java Developer training for the last 3 months. I'm so happy!2

Last day on my current job before switching to a new company.
I have 10 tasks on my "to finish before leaving" list.
Finished one task and showed it to my boss.
I now have 13 tasks on my "to finish before leaving" list.
Do you want to get people to quit? Because that's how you get people to quit.2 -
I quit my job. Today was my last day. Feels so good to get rid of the toxic workplace attitude.
I really wish someday managers understand the difference between an estimate and deadline, will reduce the pressure on devs.
I'm glad that I can take a break and explore what I want to do next 😀12 -
My former boss is trying to modify a MEAN webapp I finnished before leaving my last job.
Apparently, he is debugging Node with alerts.9 -
I lost motivation and focus on the company where I worked for 12 years.
And after 12 years I quit my job last week.
I'll work for a new company next month.
And I won't wait another 12y if I won't be satisfied or disrespected.
Never give up.4 -
When my former boss let me go, he asked "you devs do not plant some secret code into your software so you can destroy it remotely, do you?".
I smiled and walked away.
Needless to say I got some money on top on my last day at that job.2 -
Last week of my current job! Have to get up at 03:30 every night.
I fall asleep around 11pm every evening.
I'm getting used to 4 and a half hours sleep a night 😓
This is not good. 😩12 -
My dad was a computer engineer, taught me a bit, my high-school boyfriend (now husband) studied computer science, and I studied liberal arts. I couldn't get a job but got at job at my husband's startup. I learned a lot on the job and started doing tutorials online and I am the only person in my MA cohort with a job. Always been comfortable in the tech/dev world but didn't get into it myself until last year.2

I might lose my Job. Thanks to Central Bank of Nigeria's shenanigans, a promising FinTech startup might be about to go under.
Last month I got married, last month I got a raise. This morning, got told I'm being put on compulsory leave without pay (same as everyone).
Expecting no salary this month. I guess I'll be fine with some Laravel/Flutter freelancing.
Now, how to break the news to my wife. She knows I love my job, she's gonna be even more heartbroken/worried than I am. We were supposed to move to a bigger apartment next month when yearly rent here is due.
I guess we'll be alright. It is what it is.8 -

My last post was over a month ago about updating my CV to escape this place.
Pleased to report I got the job 😎3 -
Today I left my job in which I spent these last 5 years.
My boss wasn't very pleased with me leaving the company today. But well, it had to be done
Now it's time to focus in freelancing and my own startup. Surely my work will be paid more accurately than these 5 years, one of the reasons I left.15 -
Got hired as a fullstack dev last august (first dev job). This was a 1 year contract. Was offered permanent employment today and I can't stop grinning :D3

I rage quit my last job, I didn't want to do 'my last comand'. So I requested my 15 days of vacation from the previous year I had at thursday. And when my boss aproved it I delivered my auto fired letter at friday. Since then when someone just leaves in one day they call it 'to do a Dani' in honor to me XD

Worst job I had as a developer:
Convert all Python2.7 code the team wrote for the last 5 years to Python3 alone.9 -
The Moment when you signend a contract at a new cool company... Good money... Cool projects... nice ppl... And then you see it... 4 spaces instead of 1 tab, what to do? Go back to my old boss and beg for my old job? Just keep using 1 tab as i did in the last 20 years of my life? Commit suicide?19

Went from using Slack every day at the last job, to now using Google Hangouts. It sure does it job, but damn it feels like 2013. I know.. Dumb stuff to rant about7

As some of you know I start at my new job on friday. I don't have a development or computer related job, so guess what my first task is?
I was at my boss/friends house last friday night and he was like 'I know you're good with computers. So can you install the printer in my bureau?'
Now I can absolutely relate to all the printer rants. -
Error: "Slack prevented your Mac from updating last night."
Good job Slack. You can take the rest of the day off.2 -

Boss set me up for a last minute certification to prepare for next years new projects. Went through a lot of material in just two days, then had to take the exam immediately after the last class ahead of everyone else. Aced it!^^
What surprised me the most though is how much I still enjoy learning new stuff (wasn't even tech), even after 8 yrs on the job..4 -
Three years ago, tried to learn some JavaScript, failed miserably. Two years ago, managed to learn some Java through Udacity courses. Last year I started learning native Android development and got my first coding summer job. Now I'm back to learning JavaScript through Freecodecamp and that bitch ain't got shit on me no more!3

The best thing about having COBOL in my last internship is not that it opens you a lot of new job opportunities, is the look of fear and respect of your coworkers when you say that you learned it.1

been a win user for all my career.
started a new job last monday, and had to switch to a mac.
damn, that shit fries my brain.
all the shortcuts, my brackets, everything is different.12 -
i love programming, but have done too many 12 hour days recently.
spent last two days recharging by doing nothing but play the new Doom game.
i have a great job so my boss supports me.5 -
Fresh out of dropping out of uni with a real heaping of newly diagnosed depression.
Get job in the industry.
Absolute joke of a company, spiral even further.
Thus begins the saga of boom / bust and the universe / myself fucking me over just as things get good that has been the last 8 years of my life.
Maybe one day I’ll write properly about my experience of mental health, in industry, in welfare and in my family too.
Suffice it to say, anything that leads you to take a whole year out, as well as makes you question whether what you thought was your dream job is actually right for you - is, ultimately, the definition of burnout.
tl;dr - the last 8 years have been a fucking burnout episode.1 -
Holy cow! it's been a while since the last time I was here! On the great side, I left my toxic old job! If your manager gaslight you, then get out of there!1

I've been working for the last 5 months at this job and I'm getting promoted. My manager built a custom position after noticing my skills. I love my job. AMA!3 -
Not exactly dev related but possible because of my job.
After an interesting and emotional change during the last 0.5years, I am still here in
Ireland.
My job is good, could be better but definitely the best I’ve had so far..
I’m only here because of my job, it wouldn’t have been possible (at least not as easily) if I wasn’t a software engineer.
One of my dreams I saved for for years in Switzerland finally became true with just saving 4 months over here because the government doesn’t take everything you have left at the end of the month.
I finally got an old Jap...
This is my 1997 Toyota MR2 I bought on Monday..
So happy..7 -
Okay I just had the first good experience of my college career (It's my last semester)
Professor put the PDF versions of all the textbooks in their syllabus.
Swear to god I nearly came.
Good job, professor. -
I just had my first job interview. It did last for about 45 minutes.
God do I feel fucking awful.
I was very nervous fml.4 -
Hooray! After being in contact with countless companies I’ve got a joboffer last week! Too bad it pays even less then my last job but hey, jobless people can’t complain right?

Worst: Getting fired for talking too much shit about how the higher ups don’t know how to run a company.
Best: Getting hired at a way less stressful job that pays 50% more and realizing the last place was toxic as fuck.9 -
The last night my boss called me at the middle of the night fo some job related tasks.
I was like: Boss! I am your employee, not your wife !1 -
I've just finished my last day at work... I'm switching from being a 100% PM (almost 3 years) to being a 100% backend machine!
God, how I hated that job...8 -
I work for a bank and every production release date it's a chaos... Like, for real, devs running to get their stories approved by the testing team and last minute scope changes that, if not made, would make the whole app fail (real shitty management as you can see).
Longstoryshort, a dev didn't finished one of his stories and create 7 major bugs with another... Today that was my breakfast, took me 4 hours and get it all done and approved... We didn't make the release tho, but I scored some major points with this.
Funny thing, tomorrow I'm telling my PM I'll leave the company for a better job, so that will be their breakfast.6 -
Last year I went to a job interview. Companies senior developer was taking my interview. After few questions, he advise me that I should learn HTML 5.3. I thought he must be fucking with me so I said HTML 5.3 has not released yet. actually HTML 5.1 has not released yet. He looked so serious about HTML 5.3. I don't know why?3

What's a last day on the job suppose to be like?
I'm sure it's not working until 2am helping the company finalize a project. They are not happy that I decided to go to bed after a 12 hour day instead of pulling an all nighter helping.8 -
The Last Rodeo
Hi dear ranters. I've been a dev since I was 12, that makes 18 freakin years. Although I love my job and being someone who not only consumes but also produces, I am a bit grown tired of the industry.
About 6 years ago I cut ties from the last agency I worked with to become a freelancer. I ignited many projects, helped many of my customers (still helping most of them) to realize their goals. But I've come to realize that my country doesn't like old school laborers like myself (for some reasons I would explain if asked).
So I've been thinking: what would I do if I wasn't doing this job? What would you do for living if you were to stop being a developer? Let's have a chat.31 -
Ideal job?
The one that give me a roof over my head.
And pays my bills.
And bring food on the table.
And give me a lot of free time for my hobbies.
And avoids me to discuss with stupid clients.
Ok, maybe the last one is a bit unrealistic..1 -
At my first job, our employee email addresses followed a somewhat unusual naming convention: last name plus first initial, e.g. smithj@company.com for John Smith.
They were ultimately forced to change it, though, when they received a complaint from a new employee. His name? Tommy Shi...6 -
Got a job at a great company but I have to move out (I am Canadian and I got a job at Seattle)
How do I say that to my very... "possessive" boss?
Last time someone tries to quit, he threatened to sue them....
(something to do with the NDA contract saying you can't work in a similar job for the next year)8 -
I got this new job last month, but don't really have much work allotted. So I decided to make some productive use of my time:
made this

Its a library for devrant in go.
would love some love, feedback/pull-requests 😄5 -
So, just started my new job (stoked btw). At the last interview - boss: what kind of OS do you work on?
Me: I'm a simple guy who uses windows and notepad++
First day at work - get a brand spankin' new macbook and endure the most unproductive day ever...19 -
About every project at my last job. Impossible to like any project with a boss that legitimately thinks frames and tables are a better option than learning css.
But why not, attribute styling on html-elements are the future indeed.7 -
Resigned from a job I got before my last semester of Masters where I worked almost two years. Boss started acting bad at the end and my work was really stressful.
Now I don't have a job and running out of money.
Have a job interview next week where I have a slight chance of getting it. Hope ai get it!4 -
Fuck you to the hunt and peck "tech lead" who did his utmost to stop me from getting promoted by trashing on my reputation behind my back.
That was really the last straw for me at that job. I quit to work on my own projects.
I will never work in big tech again.4 -
Jesus. Got elected by the product owner last minute to give a presentation to a bunch of stakeholders. What the fuck is the point of your job if all you do is delegate your responsibilites to other people.4
-
How do you have words like "Senior", "Manager" and "Lead" in your job title and have your linkedin image look like a Tinder profile shot of the last time you went drinking in town?
Omitted a couple that were actually normal.7 -
So today is my last day at my current job. I've been here for 4 years and started working here even before I'd even graduated high school. It's really bittersweet. On the one hand I'm so excited for my new job (and vacation), but on the other hand I'll miss this place so damn much. Some say you shouldn't get too attached to your employer, and while that might be true for many cases, I feel that I've gained nothing but positive things from these last 4 years.
Having gone from just having colleagues to having actual friends has been an awesome journey, and I think a good indication of our good relationship is the fact that one of them even wrote me a goodbye song for our little goodbye breakfast this morning.
Idk, just thoughts...
Anyways, away I go. Let's hope my new job will be somewhat good as well.3 -
These days are the best days of my life, up till now.
My best friend said yes to my proposal, I got a job at my dream company with higher payment, and no issue at all after my uat like last month.
I hope my codes doesn't ruined my day 😂😂😂2 -
Just had my last day at my current job last week. I got this amazing virtual card with 20-30 people telling me how amazing I was and how large of a difference I made. I’m not someone that seeks or needs validation, but to see those comments in writing really made me feel good and like I made a huge difference.4
-
- was a manager of a super market
- got tired of walking to tills to give discount
- taught myself to code
- wrote a loyalty card system that automated the discount
- met an investor with a similar mindset and rolled it out nationally (after it was professionally refactored).
This was my "last job" starting in like 2009 not my current.1 -
Question I get a lot from my grandfather.. "So you still work for that company?". Yup, worked last week, and still working.. Still didn't fire me, and then I have to explain that it IS an ACTUAL JOB AND I GET PAID..2

Got a new job last October. And so far, I've nothing to rant about, it's absolutely perfect, too perfect.. Me scared of karma3
-
This might seem like a dumb rant to have but I just started a new job, and I asked my boss about the Work From Home policy and basically, there is no work from home, at all. I'm bummed out because I got into a really good WFH rhythm at my last job and now I have to go into the office every day, even though I am stationed in a different city than the main company office anyway. I'm already remote! Why do I have to pay to come into work remotely anyway!? Argh.15

The longest vacation I took in my last job was only for three days. I didn't touch a computer for those three days.2

Well create a Googleing machine and infuse it with code words which it automatically searches till the Google AI thinks I am a ( ) programmer and gives me a job offer.this was my last night's dream . How Hard Can it Be?!!!

Actually in my last year of University and already received 3 job proposals to different country to receive 5 times my actual sallary...
But... I need to finish my course first!!!1 -
Had a job interview today as a Junior Python dev. The hardest part: they asked things, that I used to learn in some time in the past, but got rusty in my memory because I don't use em much. Like "to write func that sorts array". Last time I was writing sorting without standard library at least half a year ago. Same with the regular expressions (need em the most once in several months) or sql expressions (last time - 7 month ago). How to remember these things?9
-
I just breathed, so just before i breathed, I blinked my eyes.
So, my last job was to blink my eyes.
Totally makes sense.3 -
I got job offer from company that makes AI product that works like electric fence for people, tracks their work and report to managers so they know when to meet and talk with this person.
Some Fucking Behavioral Shit. Well I’m tracking this company to see who they got acquired by and at the same time get the fuck out from this smart phone operating system.
Mother fuckers want to know all about everything and everyone.
At this point I saw my face in front of robot being my boss and started to questioning my life. Maybe that’s it.
Maybe it’s just last days, last year, last hour, last minute, last second…5 -
The coincidence is that I got hired today only! This was my first job interview. I am a student. Not sure if it gets counted as my last job selection but i am super happy. ;)
Thanks devRant for this special topping. 😁 -
My last day at my current company and damn, I couldn‘t be happier. Consulting was the worst decision I ever made and from tomorrow on I‘ll be free.
No more lying to clients, no more pushing of horrible products, no more silence towards problems because they didn‘t pay for a more expensive service.
I can finally stop hating myself for my job!3 -
My last job sucked because of ridiculous deadlines, never-ending demos with hacked together fake sites, etc...but I still get nostalgic and miss it because I worked with some really cool people.1

When you release a mobile framework, here is what should be in the tutorial:
How to do api calls
How to switch screens
How to handle hardware sensors
What are hidden away in an obscure last page on the flutter site? All of the above. The api section just straight up fucking points to a dart page. Good fucking job.11 -
Got into a fight with a teammate last week (acting PM, she was) over how she basically failed to do her job.
Got blamed for talking about it by project owner. (basically, they wanted to make themselves feel good by passing down the blame down the blame chain... But I rebelled)
... Don't want to walk into the same meeting tomorrow. 😢😔😞8 -
My day job is teaching at a school.
On the side, a friend (and coworker) and I have been developing an app for schools for two years.
For the last months, I have been daydreaming about taking the plunge into developing the app full time.
We don't have many clients yet, but it's getting harder to find the time for coding.
Any suggestions?10 -
just quit my job, and the last push i do is changing all the literal string contained in variable and/or stdout to base64 encoded string. and change it to call my secretely placed decoder function.
Everything is working normally guys! *walks away into darkness*10 -
You remember my team with scrums that last more than hour? They just decided that it is not enough - we will have another, morning, scrum. I am looking for a new job.5
-
Flying back to NY for my last semester.
Don't know how to feel about it.
Let the job hunting begin!
Pssst... Please hire me2 -
On my home machines, I am a dual booter (job is .net) but Ubuntu is running 90% of time. Last night I tried installing a printer but failed miserably. Due to time constraint I had to boot that fucking resource molester of win10 which sux even more on low end box like mine.
Now am red eyed & angry. Fucking printer .8 -
I just had a 3.5 hour interview last week. Chatted with the owner for an hour and we were laughing and joking around... Didn't get the job. Still don't jave a job.6
-
I've just got in from bar* work, a little drunk*!
My last dev employer actually offered me my old job back, but as HR are so awful I said the situation was past that and demanded compensation. A nice payout agreed for me, for not taking it to tribunal 👍
Now for the new job! I thought working the night scene would be fun, but it's not well paid and the freelance I have is but it's hard to juggle the two.
I might have a break or a month or so doing this, then look for another job.
Anyone recommend good companies LGBT friendly in London?16 -
Today was my last day at my old job. At my last monthly review, the CEO actually said to me how things would be much better if I were making enough sales happen on the websites to justify my (very low) annual salary. I checked the numbers on my way out the door. In the past 8 months I definitely cleared that threshold and then some. I wonder if he would've given me the next 4 months off with pay. LOL
-
Who else can relate to being in this guy's shoes? This is so funny because it was so true at my last job.
https://youtu.be/BKorP55Aqvg5 -
I had 2 features I coded pushed to prod today at work! It's my first week at my new job. It made me realize how toxic and detrimental my last job was to both my self esteem and career. I'm so happy!!2

Got my first job last week as a junior gameplay programmer. Dream job 😁
Well, more like a dream position than the actual dream job.
Proprietary engine and a new language are kinda hard to wrap my head around, but I've been having so much fun that by the time 4 rolls around I usually don't notice it and stay for an hour or so more.
I love it!4 -
Fun fact, I left my old job in October last year. I still have a full access to their github. With admin privileges. I could just delete all their repositories. This is too much power.7
-
FUUUUUUUUUUCK FUCK FUCK FUUUUUUUUUUCK ! Sorry I needed to let this out. I make extra hours since a few weeks and this only because 1. I'm the only dev of the team (will seriously need more people). 2. I have to manage people remotely which, as a 3 years old experienced dev, is not what I expect of my job. 3. I need to finish the job of an intern (not even her fault but de was asked to make powerpoints and stuffs instead of working on the module we need).
And today we just asked me if I can work on saturday. NO. I love (or used to?) my job but this can't last for ever.2 -
I just got my first full time job as a junior front end developer just because they didn't have any other option (I was last on their list).
Should I be happy or sad about it?13 -
Last day in the office. I started remembering good old memories. Felt nostalgic and doubted my new job as they were not giving rise as per my expectation.
Then, my manager comes up with his divine improvement in the good working site (not for me but for other dev).
I felt sorry for my fellow mates and started praising my new job.1 -
Never been promoted.
I was at my last job for 3 years 6 months (first out of uni), my last mid year review I was discussing my performance with my manager, he said I was doing everything I needed to be promoted, just needed to wait a bit longer. I had been performing at that level, with that extra responsibility, for 18 months.
I've since left for a job at Amazon, start in a week, and will literally double my salary. The thing that annoys me is I was one of the most junior engineers in the building, but giving support and teaching almost every engineer in the office. Granted, the company was only 30 people (mostly engineers), but still felt undervalued...4 -
Started a new job as a senior dev but with a framework I've never worked with and I just feel like I'm slow AF and just not qualified for the job. I'm sure it doesn't help that I'm greiving my dog that passed last Tuesday.6
-
I did an interview last week.
Recruiter asks me about why I want to work for their company.
I'm too honest and tell them I mostly just don't want to work for my current company.
Next day get screened out despite being extremely qualified for the job.
Shouldn't have been so honest in that interview lol.8 -
Nightly coding session in Tuscany drinking good Chianti! That's the highest point of my peacefulness in the last year...there is something wrong in our job/passion.7
-
My brain: Its a company that works with web technologies and the job is more of a devops job they wont expect you to know cpp compilation process.
Interviewer: Last question tell me in detail what happens when you compile a cpp program.6 -
Recruiter: (on email) hi please check this exciting opportunity!
Me: ....
Recruiter (on email): I see you haven't got back to me on this. Blah blah blah
Me: Hi xyz, can you share the complete job description and compensation details?
Recruiter: <last seen 2 weeks ago>1 -
Last night before the final dismissal of my current job.
Being nervous as shit and thinking of how it can go.4 -
I'm on my train, leaving after my last day of work. I didn't hate that job, quite the opposite actually, but Im sure the new job will give me more opportunities to grow professionally.
Now I'm just sad I'll miss all of the familiar faces, and all the usual things I was doing.
So many emotions and I don't even know where to start.
Oh and I'm drunk too.1 -
Just got interviewed for a project today. The interviewers knows i am a fresher and the last thing that they told me after the entire interview was that the job requires a 4 yr experience!!! I was standing there and wondering why am i being interviewed then and how was my profile selected for the job 😂2
-
Last job I was in, dev boss would ask to send him snippets of code through email for review...
...they used no git or source control
I quit after two weeks.1 -
During my last University year, a big IT Corp made a national contest for students with some 3 phases and some prized at the end. I ended 14 over 2000 participants and they called me for an internship which eventually turned up to a good job contract. Still working with them now.

- Favourite pastime while waiting for your code to compile
- Most heroic/ingenuous bug fix
- Hardest to track down bug
- Worst legacy code you wrote and left behind leaving a job
- Weirdest project
- Last side project you actually finished
- Explain your job like I'm five/the way you do it for non-tech people
- That time your past self (almost) got you in trouble
- Software pet peeves
- Story about how you freaked someone out
- Feature that most certainly was a bug once
- Post something for your favourite previous weekly tag! -
Why do recruiters keep thinking they can contact me 5 months after i last spoke to them? Look at me LinkedIn. I have a job!2

So in just a matter of minutes my job security has crashed and any week could be my last again all because my jobs head office decided to change everyones positions in management...
So once again I'm back to square one in yet another useless fucking job search with barely anything to offer other than 5 years of retail experience and 3 years of IT support... Fan-fucking-tastic, would almost be more survivable to just go on centre link at this point -,- -
when you start a new job where they just switched to a new CMS product that is no longer being developed... then find out they spend tons of money on a vendor to set it up for them.
At least it's supported for the near future. Last job was using FoxPro and AS400 mainframe2 -
Last couple of days as a dev at this job. I'm polishing up my documentation and making sure my reference guides are up-to-date. All the while knowing that my documentation, tools, and tests will likely never be touched. They'll sit on a share drive somewhere, like ancient tomes, while the next devs re-invent the wheel. So it goes.1
-
Am I the only one to see the contradiction between the first point and the last one 🤔?
(Job post from Quartal Financial Solutions)11 -
So, after crashing and burning during my last interview I’ve applied for another job, this time as a Technical Support Engineer.
Bringing my aspirations down slightly to spend a bit more time building up my experience.
But, the job is for a good company, and I can work from home. -
Last month I asked my boss for some task to work on. He told me to stick to reading tutorials and wait just a day or two for the tasks.
Month just passed and no programming tasks arrived.
Should I change job?
Yesterday made quite nice looking CV.14 -
Do you get informed about the reasons behind business decisions in your job?
That wasn't the case in my last job and I dreaded my code for that reason.
I think this kind of lack of information can lead to bad engineering decisions and unstructured code. Also, this doesn't lead to the needed ownership of your work.
What do you think?3 -
My last manager apprently was letting me go, bcoz I wanted a job which involved development, he said to me "why do you have aspire to develop???"
Frm now your aspirations will also be controlled.
P.S Resigned the next day -
In a mediocre job since last 4 years with just a developer designation, but we simply use Java based tools and products to do most of our job. Need to study for a change in job.
Literally every morning:
"Let me see what to focus on: JavaScript/Java/C++/Python/Data science/ML/AI/NodeJS/...." The list goes on.
Every Evening:
"I need to focus on Data Structures and Algorithms. So let me stick to Java for now."
Next Day:
Back to the same routine.
2 months have passed and I have not seriously studied or concentrated on anything :(
Depressed.2 -
3 weeks ago my job got cut while I'm overseas ☹️ only a few days after my grandmother died - talk about when it rains it pours 🌧 but so grateful for the last chance to say goodbye to granny.
Now I'm enjoying the unexpected, extended vacation and gearing up for job hunting... the market is brutal tho. Good luck out there everyone!1 -
Last week, I have the courage to leave my job which was only paying me only 180 dollars a month as a Software Engineer for 2 years, and worked on-site so plus travel time and travel expenses, though, that was my first job and I learned a lot.
Tomorrow, I will start my new job that has a WFH setup, and with better pay.
I'm a bit nervous and overthinking what if they will not like me or they will terminate me before paying my debt (debt from preparing my room from WFH setup).
Any tips from WFH people and on how to not screw up on this setup?
Wish me luck guys and thanks for the answers!3 -
Get well soon for @aureliagbrl. i hope i quit my job a bit later (since i always go home with her) and last night she got an accident while on her way home after overtime work.
sorry dear 😥6 -
Kind of awkward for me.
Tomorrow is my last day at my current job and my department is starting to work full time remote tomorrow.
I start my new job this next Monday, and they went full remote yesterday. As of now they're shipping my laptop my way, but they cancelled new hire orientation on Monday and moved it to the following week. I haven't heard about what is expected for Monday yet, guess I'll know soon!3 -
Got a job as a fresher, had no idea what work I'll have to do.
Was given the task to fix some bugs that had creeped in due to update of some UI framework.
Having absolute no idea of front end, I started the task.
Have spent the entire last week looking through CSS, HTML, Javascript.
Have come to the decision of quitting the job.
Life is too short to be lived this way.7 -
quit my job. Last day at work yesterday... should have recieved my final pay check today.... but No luck - No paycheck :-(3
-
At my last work place I wanted to visit a Conference for a long time but my boss never even was interested in at least helping me with the price of the tickets.
Now at my new job 2 Weeks in and I already got tickets for the w-jax in Munich <3
I'm soooooo exited :D -
1. Coming everyday with passion to solve a problem.
2. Pay is very good
3. Last and most important..
When you are a coder you have the privilege not to comunicated verbally to anyone as long as you like.
The job becomes the quit place if you want to.9 -
**phone rings**
- Hello
- Hi. I am calling from *some MNC*. We have a job opportunity for you. Do you have any plans to switch?
- What's the domain?
- It's asp.net and Xamarin.
- Sorry, I do not work on that anymore. Please let me know if you have any openings in Python.
**phone rings again**
- Hello
- Hi. I am calling from *another MNC*. We have a job opportunity for you. Do you have any plans to switch?
- What's the domain?
- It's python.
- Sorry, I do not work on that anymore. Please let me know if you have any openings in asp.net.
My story for last four years. I guess I have found the most humble way to reject the job calls.6 -
Devrant website UI is so fucking cool! Man I so love it! <3
(the last time I used it on a browser was almost 1 year ago, when it had the mobile-app kinda UI)
It kinda overshadows the mobile app UI. Wish I had more time off from my job and could work on the mobile UI for android.1 -
Debugging an old C module, committed (like a fucking crime) by some guy who really wants to show how uselessly complex stuff he could do... Fucking nightmare!
Last time I did this kind of job! If I had known his address I could have crippled him!!!3 -
My last job I worked with one other dev, she always thought her code was PERFECT and the way she did things PERFECT, she enjoyed pointing out flaws in my code or web sites in our big marketing meeting with out executives. Yeah won't miss her one bit
-
Last Friday night instead of partying, or seeing a movie I stayed home to clean up some code for a potential job interview. Good times! :D3
-
Not leaving my last job earlier.
History: Supervisor / Lead Developer was a complete moron who watched videos on facebook and youtube, engaged in heated discussions on facebook, wasted my time by showing the work of other companies and vines, smoked in the office and towards the end gave me shit for not meeting deadlines of the work that he was supposed to deliver. Project that I was working on had very lazy clients so I was free for even 2 days sometimes and that’s why I decided to help my supervisor on the project assigned to him but in reality I was handling two projects all alone.
Aftermath: My indie games started gaining traction on google play and I found a client and I made 5x my salary at my last job.1 -
I've been on the job hunt for a developer job for about two months now.
Last Monday I finally got my first response. Later that they a recruiter from a local telecom reached out saying they needed software engineers and wanted to meet.
Tonight is my first interview. Wish me luck. Feeling pretty great right now6 -
My biggest insecurity is that I missed out on new technology. I've been stuck on my last job working and maintaining a Magento store and doing only boring stuff, fixing bugs in php, etc. I it's been like that for 3 years but before 6 months I've switched jobs and now I'm learning new stuff, feals good :D1
-
Handed my notice in at my current job last week. Today a project update goes round to the company that I'm leaving with everything we're working on.
We have a new client. It's the company I'm moving to.
IS THERE NO ESCAPE?! -
finished making website and all its features work across Chrome, Safari, and even IE11 and Edge..... but not Firefox... been like this for the last 3 sites that I have done. Mostly CSS3 related. Some CSS3 hacks are required for that browser... why are you the odd one out now Firefox??? That used to be the job of IEs!!!17
-
Finish a personal project.
Any personal project. I'm not picky. The last time I completed a project that wasn't for my job was like five (well, now six) years ago. -
I left my last position after getting passed for a promotion 4+ times over 2 years. Old boss just asked if I'd like the job out of the blue.
...no. You're a little late.1 -
In the last module of my bootcamp(make all the jokes you want about bootcamp I have thick skin and a degree 😬) and just started applying for jobs. First job I applied for was a big company asking for 5+ years experience.
Might as well get used to rejection early 😂3 -
Here's the intro of the documentation I'm reading in my new job:
...we have four sections. First 3 section will use LBC and the last 2 section will use HBC
🤔 -
I’m doing my last two days at my current job. (I resigned to go work full-time on a startup project.)
While doing some last commits, I couldn’t resist to not put an easter egg in my current running project (an e-commerce web application)... I’m hoping to be able to trigger it in the future when it’s being used by a dozen of our clients.. 🌝 Hopefully, my follow-up dev will get the joke and won’t remove these lines of code.. -
"Orient your UI around the job to be done — around the problem — and not the person. Then people who have that problem can fall in love with your product because it makes the problem go away, whether they are the first in line or the last person to hear about it." - Ryan Singer
-
Hi this is my first post. Kind of annoyed at the job market right now. I've applied to a lot of positions without much luck. My internship last summer got cancelled bc of covid, so all my actual job experience is retail. It's hard to break into the field even with a college degree.8
-
I don't like change, especially change in toilets. I tend to have a list of toilets I can use. For the last 3 months I have been avoiding the toilet at my new job, but am sitting on her right now, she's quite nice. I'll name her algo.4
-
Does anyone every get JOB from Linkedin ??
I am continuously applying from last 1-2 month and I just got.. Thanks for your interest but we are not moving with your application. No Matter if it is basic skill level Job or higher one? I wonder if I am the only one facing this13 -
Having my last day at this company today!!! So looking forward to the new job. No more customers I have to talk to, no more deadlines, no more fucking app development.
Going to be the lead SEO and e-Commerce guy in a relatively big company, with my own small team, finally my own office again - and less development (but will still develop about 20% of the time).
Gonna be awesome, but first, I get to have 3 weeks vacation to renovate my house 😁1 -
My second job interview ever tomorrow.
Btw the other company from a month ago didn't take me. Was too good for them...
Maybe I will be able to improve some things from last time!
Wish me luck!7 -
I'm too young to have taken my last job...
Enough with the jokes. I have been networking with a lot of people through the years of working at companies and that paid off.
When people trust you for your knowledge, then it's normal to attract business offers. Also, you can partner up with people. That's how my last job started and is still going. At a previous company, I interviewed a guy who had the skills and motive to replace me, but he didn't get the job cause my boss was stupid (he was lucky not to work there, for real).
After I left, he called me to offer me a partnership. One year later and we are killing it, became good friends too.rant partnerships even friendships out of nowhere stupid bosses everywhere networking is important wk77 -
Got my first dev job last November and I've been working as a contractor for the government. Supposed to be on a 4 year contract job, just found out that out project is being pulled in September. Is this common for federal contract work? My Human Resources team haven't been very helpful in explaining the process to me. Is private sector development any less volatile? I don't have a mentor or anybody I can bounce questions off so sorry if this is more or less common knowledge :/5
-
At my last job I was the only one who knew PHP, SQL, and Bash (for managing the linux server through SSH). I wrote PHP modules for their CMS that they still use today. I was hired as an intern and made $8 an hour.
-
I've got a question for everyone.
I'm revamping my CV and I was thinking of lightening it a bit, but I'm not very experienced with CV's.
At my last development job, we would order breakfast cobs every Friday, and I would sort all the change out and order it etc.
Would it be wrong to add this to the end of my job history?4 -
Manager does nothing but give me more work. Can't code. doesn't even get git issues. Last in first out yet I'm first in last out. At end of meeting he says, "great job but one comment, you should say 'We' not 'I', cuz this is a team effort"
Are you fucking kidding me dude? Add it as another issue.... Oh wait -
I got a phone interview!!! Hope it goes better than my last one :') that one was for a web developer position and they asked me about stack vs queue and memory allocation. Idk why but I sure as shit didn't get the job.2
-
Worst interview?
Last 7 or 8....
I took 3 years of formation to get a job in a specialized area... To be offered only minimum wages.
On one I felt so offended that I was rude to the interviewer... Stupid lady saying that small people only get minimum wages...
And I was rude to her again last week... I'm trying to change jobs and replied to a job offer from the same company (dissimulated, I only knew because of the email) my reply: no thank you... If I wanted to work for minimum wage I would go cleaning...4 -
So my phone got stolen last night. FOR FUCK SAKE. I scrape together enough money to get another cheap phone after the last one broke, and now I need YET ANOTHER ONE WHEN I HAVEN'T GOT A JOB AND CAN'T APPLY FOR ONE WITHOUT ARGRFHUJGHIOSDJGBH:USKDGHISD:1

Emily Chang cameo on Silicon Valley just added to the authenticity of the show and attention to detail. She was giving a report on background TV in a short scene.
She does a great job on Studio 1.0. She has interviewed many tech and CEO's. Last weekend interview with Arianna Huffington was surprisingly valuable in the advice it gave to young startup CEO's. -
Some of the rants this week have been really touching and amazing. This small community holds within itself so many amazing stories.
The most intense day for me was my last day at my first job. It was sad to see some of the best developers I had personally known for the last time. I learnt a lot there and had some really fabulous moments. -
I got my last job from stack overflow jobs. They had me implement a code test that involved a decent amount of features and took several weeks of my freetime to complete, but in the end I had a short phone interview and I had gotten the job :D
-
My last search for a job...
Very bad.
I'm a cnc operator with 3d modeling formation.... As a specialized job I should be getting at least 50% over the Portuguese minimum wage (wich is only 650€)...
I asked only 50€ above minimum wage over 10 interviews or more and no one accepted it....
The fashion in Portuguese companies now (most of them) is to pay minimum wages... Even if I already invested 3 years of my life in formation... Basicly the same as an engenheir (not the same requirements, I know).
Ended up accepting minimum wage on my current job.3 -
Hey all! Ironically, last time I posted here was when I got my first job in the industry. Well, two and a half months later I'm here asking all the professional devs for their opinions on this matter. So, for all you full-time working devs out there: How do you stay motivated to work on side projects during your free time?4
-
Well I would say a pretty humbling experience was my last job interview where my new boss and hr guy were truly shared by my skills and then the first day at work where my boss said please do this decision, I really need an opinion by an experienced developer like you as I am not sure which one is the better one.1
-
I once went on multiple interviews, took multiple tests (IQ and personality) and then went on anothet interview for a job. After the last interview I didn't hear anything more from the recruiter.
A year later the same recruiter contacts me to ask if I have any friends who might be interested in a position.
🖕🏻 -
So today we had a pre-sprint-planning meeting where the POs told us about the stories currently in the backlog. They went ahead and "roughly prioritised" some of them. Their priorities were:
- normal (but asap please)
- has to be done this sprint, because the feature has to be in the next release (code freeze after this sprint)
- top priority, because this has to be in the previous release (which was released last friday)
The non-normal stories alone are about twice our normal velocity. Good job guys. Good job. -
Tomorrow is my first day of slave job. I feel depression higher and higher. I am extremely unhappy. I feel like im going to prison starting from tomorrow.... 9-5 jobs are definitely not for me. I had never enjoyed this bullshit. I can already sense depression so deep thats about to hit me. Dont know how long this job will last, but not more than 3 months hopefully. Probably wont make it even 3 months from how bad I'll perform. Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh6
-
"basically I have quite the experience and last job I was senior"
"How much experience do you have with [language] in specific?"
"About 4 years"
"Ah so you are medior, we are searching for a senior."
Seriously, who came up with the stupid idea of "must have 5+ years in a tech to be senior"?4 -
Got a new job. Its all good. Fun work, great colleagues and good pay. However, last week they mandated some new surveillance tech so all network traffic is unencrypted, logged, stored and analyzed.
Should I stay or should I go? I am big into privacy. What would you do?26 -
Had far too sparetime and found out that Wix wasn't making real websites. Found out that a pretty cool tool named "inspector" existed and then I was in. I used all the time I could afford by taking courses, study and get a small job last summer. Then I became a member of devRant aaaaand then my productivity decreased dramatically 😁
-
When a senior asks me, the guy who started 4 months ago about documentation on something that they’ve been using for several years. Haha, yeah bro, wouldn’t all of our job be a lot easier? I’ve been going down entire rabbit hole networks trying to find credentials and API tokens for the last month because there was no documentation 🤷🏻♂️6
-
Best: getting hired for my first job at a digital marketing agency.
Worst: watching everyone else quit around me, culminating in my team leader, the last team member besides me1 -
Starting a new job tomorrow as a junior Java developer. Let's hope this works out better than my last job which was supposedly also as a java dev but involved zero code writing2
-
Sorry fam... Just because I was a devOps in my last job doesn't mean you will get the sun and the moon when asked. Let's talk realistic solutions with resources.
-
Hii guys! Im new to DevRant and am reaching out to QA specialists out there!
I got an interview for Junior QA specialist and i need some tips on to what to focus my time studying on. ANY TIPS WILL BE APPRECIATED.
Super nervous since its my first interview for a Co-op job and it may be my last chance to get a co-op job before i graduate. Pleeeease help6 -
I gave my team 2 weeks notice last week. Now, every time something “stupid” happens, this is how I feel! I’ll be starting at my new job in a few weeks and couldn’t be more excited!
-
We have a cron job. We have alerts to monitor the cron job. We also have a monthly task to check the above are working.
Why? I wrote the first 2 so as far as I'm concerned, I'm going to tick yes on the last.6 -
Well last 2 days at my dream job and after the 8th time they've contracted me they still haven't come close to offering me a position... Do I have the right to be pissed off? Because I am! >.<2
-
Being tempted by a job offer as an iOS dev that has full (paid) training. Not a fan of apple but heard swift is a nice language (assuming it is swift).
I've spent the last year and a half learning the react way as my first dev job, not sure whether it's beneficial to keep on this path or diversify. -
So... I just finished my last day in office. I'm leaving my first job.
I was expecting some emotions. Strangely, I don't feel anything more than when I'm after work.
Wtf?5 -
Last week of classes and this semester is history. One step closer to attaining my dream job of being a software engineer.
-
Last day at this job. Fixing a printer and then exploring electron apps until 5 because no one's giving me anything to do1
-
So on Thursday I left my first job as a Trainee Electronics Technician which i got given when i finished my last year of College, to become a .NET Web Developer this Monday. Trying to put the sadness aside from missing co-workers and be excited instead!1
-
Waiting for a job interview to happen for the last hour. After a long week and day, stuck in the traffic getting here, paid unnecessary money to the taxi. Thinking about leaving the company without doing the interview for the last 15 minutes. Fuck job interviews anyway.4
-
Following my last rant, my current employer told me it wasn’t right for me to assure a job first without telling him first I was planning on leaving.
How does that even work? Am I the only one who thinks that makes no sense at all?15 -
Finish my studies.
Find a (half)decent job.
Build the Linux distro I need to start the real project.
Fund the startup I've been planning last months of 2017 before the tech gets old. -
People always say thet you should not quit your job before you have the next job lined up, but what if you plan to do freelance? This is my dilemma.
A bit of context (rant).
My current job is my first official job. Small company, VERY HIGH staff turnover rate. I have been here for 2 and a half years. My commute on a good day is < 20 mins, and money is relatively good.
During the last 6 months, all devs above me resigned, which lead to the system maintenance being passed on to the few devs left. Our biggest system is a legacy system (Windows CE), and new clients are actively signed up and new features requested. The codebase is not even worthy of being called spaghetti, changes break every client, I need to wash my hands every couple of minutes. Seriously, I would rather maintain obfuscated code. It is like a bunch of highschoolers wrote the system, though I think they would have done a better job.
Management is nice and understanding, but the state of the codebase is killing the spirits.
I fill my nights and weekends moonlighting to keep my mind off of the 'daymares' at work. I have never been a team player, and thrive on my own. I have been thinking quiting and going full freelance/contract the last couple of months. Should things not work out, I can always go job hunting (see issue in par. 1)2 -
Last day at my current job.
It feels like my soul has left but my body is trapped in the office until the end of the day 😂2 -
I was working as a web developer from 2 year. That was so difficult.
I just change my job to start in a new society last monday.
Not web at all. I'm learning a new langage. And I love it.
Maybe software development it what I must do.
Hopping keep this job.4 -
Be me at new job.
Just learned that bonus is tied to project estimate skills. Range is +- 25% of estimate vs reality.
They are waterfall. I've spent the last three years as Agile. -
Last time I accept the job to modify an outdated WordPress with expired- support-premium-theme and no proper sources and/or build system... 😠
-
Depends...
My last/current retail job: was dating the managers daughter at the time
My last tech related job: my old high school decided to dangle another job opportunity in my face then quickly snatch it away7 -
Some idiot fixing bugs in production and overwriting files without updating his git repo when I pushed another bugfix live.
Boss to me: "it's your job to get the fix live!"
I FUCKING HATE MONDAYS!
screw performance i'm gonna run gulp.watch in production and just git reset it to last release when someone fiddles with files on the server :( -
Went for a interview for a first time after I've found a job as developer last year. It was my first time trying to get a job in gamedev. My dream has come true - they asked me about what games I like and we have talked about mentioned titles for about ten minutes. No idea if I presented myself good enough but experience was really awesome.
-
Update on job hunting in the first world:
1- Tens of rejections
2- Had one HR interview last week, seemed to have went well and claimed to check with techlead for a technical interview so fingers crossed
3-interview tomorrow with another company
Also January weather sux balls1 -
That moment that quite a few people want a CLI tool for devRant but very few actually have input :p
I love my job/hobbies.
About to start (or resume) development on the CLI tool, if you want to provide last-minute input you can do there here: https://github.com/ChappIO/devrant/...
or here: https://gitter.im/ChappIO/devrant5 -
I was terminated last year from BigTech. Will I ever get another job in another BigTech company?
Not a layoff. Terminated for moonlighting. Lack of judgment on my part. Trying to move past this but the events still haunt me till this day.
Not looking for sympathy. Rather, advice on how to approach job search and background checks in the future. I have big ambitions and don’t want to be an IC forever. I’m hoping this doesn’t prevent me from becoming a manager —> Director in the future.3 -
Have you ever rejected a job offer just because said company uses php. I did 3 in last two weeks.
p. s. I already have job, may that's why3 -
!Rant
I am now on my official first job as a software engineer.
What do you guys do as consultants?
I also defended my MSc last week. -
Heyo, I got a last-minute interview tomorrow as a Windows Admin for the datacenter and pc-pools of a university in my state.
This will be my first interview for a real job, after my apprenticeship, and my second interview overall.
You got any tips for what I should prepare or what questions I should ask?2 -
Quick Survey:
- What's your job title?
- Since when are you at your current job?
- Are you satisfied with your current pay?

Last day at the old workplace done ✔️
Now there's 5 weeks of freedom ahead before the new job begins. I can only advise all of you to go for one month of me-time the next time you change your job 😁 -
When I was working as a mentor in my last job, everything new I leared were hardened by teaching it to someone else. Now I am working as a software developer and I feel the necessity of teaching. If I had a chance, I would go back to be a part-time mentor again just for the sake of that kind of productivity.

I'm doing my last days at my current job this week. I'm beginning a new job next week and am quite affected by impostor syndrome. What happens when they find out how bad I am at programming?3
-
Hi all, how do you deal with imposter syndrome?
I just joined a new job 3 mths back and am struggling with feeling productive. I feel my manager thinks I might be incompetent as my project deliveries are getting delayed.
I was burnt out as last job and it hasn't been easy picking up domain knowledge in a new workplace esp with wfh.
Any advice on how to deal with such a situation ?3 -
My ideal job has me working on developing quality software with smart people in an environment where there is not much bureaucracy. I get input into the future of the application. There is no expectation for me to work extended hours and I can be flexible and come in late and work late if I feel like it. Also the job should be near where I live so that I don't have to travel.
There is one last thing. The employer should be doing well and have no excuse and plenty of budget for salary increases hardware upgrades, growing the development team, etc.
This is essentially the job I have now except that last thing. -
for last few weeks, my mind is urging me that i can land a job at big companies if i tried, and i am like dude are you high or something?
-
I got my last job (current job) exactly 3 years 3 days back. That was 2nd interview of my life with 2 days of interview process having 1 round. Then I was hired as 1st developer of the startup.
Funny thing is that 1 month before I got this job, one person approched me to develop an internal system for his company, but cancelled the deal once he knew I hadn't worked anywhere. -
Can't really say it's the most pissed off I've been probably at mild annoyance. So for the last two years I've been stressing that in order to do my job efficiently. I need handovers and documentation. It's a ball ache I know but definitely needed.
Well after not being listened too for the last two years we now are getting a documentation process. Why? Because a lack of documentation was the leading cause to a data breach.
Yeah I've been stressing that scenario for the last two years. But no one gave a damn until it happened. -
Well, here goes the first day of my four week notice period. Finally took the decision to look for a new job last week. I'm curious where I'm gonna end up, but I'll be relieved when these four weeks are over. I lost interest in the job I'm currently at and it sucks that I'm still stuck here for so long, but at least there's an end in sight now.1
-
Why is it so that I have 8 hours to work, but find myself to only be productive in the last 2 hours... I find it difficult to work in the mornings, to much chaos up in my head.
I'll loose the job if I continue so, any tips?3 -
Fucking hate shopify,
Fucking hate designers who just keep stacking work apart from original design
I loved front end but last job made me hate it so much.
Damn those clients -
I've left the job last year, no planning for any big move yet. When I'm demotivated, I talk to my father and plan to join some company. And his response is "If you dare, why do you care?"
-
Last job and current job I got mostly the same way. Current job was done slightly more effectively.
Here is what I did both times:
* Each day I checked all the job sites for developer jobs in the locations I was willing to travel to. I made bookmarks to various search pages so I could quickly see the results.
* I regularly searched for websites of any IT companies or large corporations that had offices in those locations. I bookmarked these and would check each day to see if they had job openings on their websites.
* Every job I applied for I made a folder with the date and job description.
* Inside the job folders I made a notes.txt file with the wording of the job and links to the ad. I googled the company and added notes like peoples names, etc. to these notes files.
* For every job I made minor alterations my resume to make sure it aligned with the job ad and copied it to the job folder
* I created another text document called cover_letter.txt which had a written letter describing all my experience that matched with the job ad
* Where possible I would call and speak with someone to get more detail about the job and updated the letter and resume accordingly
* Finally I would email or post the letter and resume
Using this method I was able to apply to several jobs every day and I was able to reuse and improve on the letters as the weeks went by. Also since I applied for a lot of jobs when someone replied I had the job ad available to look at.
For both last and current jobs I moved countries. The difference was between last and current was the previous time I moved first then started looking and for my current job I started looking before I moved. For the current job employers seemed to welcome my situation and I had several job interviews lined up for after my arrival. I felt it put me in a better light since I was essentially unavailable until my arrival date compared to before when I was unemployed and looking and getting desperate.
The job I have now I was interviewed while overseas on skype and then in-person the day after landing in the country. They quickly told me I would be hired. It seemed good so I canceled the other interviews. Sorry no exciting circumstances.1 -
I fucking hate my current job. I switched to this one a few months ago, since my last one was getting stale after being there for nearly a decade.
I'm currently considering to return to my last position. Did somebody face a similar situation? Got a new position, only to realize that it sucks?2 -
Last day at my current job, just took my devRant sticker off my laptop. Going to have to get some more to put on my new laptop next week!
-
I've went away but now I'm back. My last job was a fucking nightmare, they were well into my rants! New job now. I'll be tearing into my old one in due course. Watch this space.3
-
Last day working for my current employer. New job from Monday.
Even pinging Google loses 3/4 of packets. New Cisco router.
Yeah, I'm glad it's my last day here. -
Last day of my job tomorrow, looking forward to the challenges of the next one and wondering what's the first thing I'll be ranting about.2
-
Knowledge management. My last job had notes recorded under closed tickets. Some people use hundreds of gdocs. Others have github gists some people I've seen just have sticky notes everywhere
How do you handle personal knowledge bases?? I want to set up some system for me and maybe my friends2 -
last semester in college is so mind fucking, should i start looking for job or should i continue learning more by myself?I don't want to be the only person left unemployed after graduation but i also don't want to get into an a job that's too exploiting, less paying or not what i wanted :(1

!rant
I think the devs of this app made it a lot easier to swipe to go back on iPhones in the last update. Good job guys!4 -
Just pushed the last commit about a work they asked me in the last job interview. Please wish me good luck!2
-
Either the horrible devil lady on my last project or the Mormon nepotism on my first project.
To clarify, the horrible devil lady set my career back a year. The Mormons just cost me job satisfaction. The job in Utah probably set me back though. -
What's up with recruiters calling the office? Today, a coworker got a call from a recruiter. 5 minutes later I got a call from a lady from an IT Management consulting company asking me if I'm the right person to talk to which I'm quite obviously not (she apparently sent me an email last week, which, if I got it, marked as spam).
In my last job several recruiters called; how could I even talk open on the phone -.- -
Last course complete! It's summer leave baby! Oh, and then that full time job as well... But hey, still!
-
The story of my last(current) job is fairly boring... Recruiter I worked with in the past called and said there was a group looking for my skill set and that I should have lunch with them. Went to lunch and one hour later we had negotiated my salary, bonuses and benefits. Been here ever since.
-
So I'm free again. Started a new job in November and then last week they said it wasn't working out. They like me but need someone "more senior". Good luck finding someone more senior who is willing to work on jps and glassfish 2 in 20204

Hello devRant, my old friend....
It's been a while since i've last checked devRant and I am sure a lot of stuff happened since then. Anyway I am back and I might vent some anger on my job soon (yes, I know I originally said that everything is perfect but it seems as if I just was naive enough to think it was)3 -
So I quit my last job because they were only focusing on developing invoicing and inventory control systems. It was really boring same old thing every day!!
When I started my current job they were developing CMS and web solutions. But recently management is considering to develop invoicing and inventory control systems (which now I HATE ).
WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE THERE'S MORE THAT!!!!
😫🙄😡😠7 -
Not really a rant, but I quit the job I hated for one that pays more and will also give me a set schedule so that I can actually get some coding done for once! (Last job had me on random open or close shifts and that shit fucks with your head after a while) I'm so stoked. Looks like I might finish my projects before Christmas after all, whooo!
-
People must be happy when they have no job from last year and suddenly get a very good offer..... I also got an offer yesterday.... my family is happy.
But I'm not sure if I'm happy. Because, now, less time to open source development, less chance to take the independent decisions, less time for life, less time for family & friends.5 -
I could slack around all the time and then switch to "the devil" mode in the last week. Oh and I could use mumbo jumbo words to confuse the shit outta my clients(and boss). Plus I could automate maintenance job and get so much time at 'hand'(quite literally)
-
My last days at work before changing job. I am an angular expert, and I have contributed to build the first angular enterprise project for my business; during my last 20 days you know what I am doing? Maintenance on a pretty old GWT project that nobody wants to care...1
-
I was all hyped up coz I WHINED AND BITCHED FOR MONTHS against a 5-6y old B2B company offering, that it's shit n needs to be remade
And they agreed, n only 2 people assigned to it yet, the last chief architect and me
But last guy is old n is the one who made it shit in the first place (we use Windows Tasks in a Windows Server, triggering once every minute to pretend background tasks)
n he doesnt even want 2 branches (: And is still making the same mistakes that made the last implementation shit n it's hard to stop him coz he senior and old
And now I kinda dont care, but have to coz job market's shit

I started my brand new job last monday. Very nice people so far but tbh im already hesitating if this business isnt too backend minded for a frontender like myself. I do have a lotttt to learn the coming weeks. Lets see how i hold up my small share of this bigger company with it’s daunting piece of software.3

Hi ranters,
I'm a full stack developer with 2 years experience and worked on a React Native and Flutter. I quit my last job 4 months ago. Trying to find remote jobs/ jobs in Europe with intention of relocation.
I still didn't found a job offer, received many rejection emails.
Any of you got any tips for me? 😣😔6 -
Every week you meet with the loneliest dumb person explaining what you had already explained the last week.
Even now I remember the week that it all started. It all happened when I got the job 😅 -
Need advice.
I applied to a company and i am still waiting for the reply via email, the last email they sent was monday, should i wait or just find another job opportunity, the interview went well but i dont know if they will reply or not.4 -
I got fired at last year. I couldn't find a job since economy moving slower than Sloth. So I started working solve this tiny problem, which everyone here must have faced - http://bit.ly/rant-commics-2n
Feedback will be appreciated ( also feel free to take the 2 min survey in the post ) :D1 -
Really really frustrated with constant changes to webapps from business teams lol .. made major code changes to a product 6 times the last 6 months 🙄
Any suggestions on how to transition into a security engineer job (I manage DevOps for the company as well, and I am currently studying cybersecurity engineering too) -
Is vscode that notoriously slow as a damn snail?? I can barely use it sometimes. I’m on a MacBook Pro that I bought new last year, so it’s not a potato.
Then again my last job issued a thinkpad, not my top choice bc I like Mac’s but vscode ran somewhat ok on that ugly thing12 -
Acumatica, left my last job because of that crap. Their implementation of a query language ('BQL') using generic types is horrendous1
-
My first day at my first job.
I am super hyped. Now I like be like Mario under a hidden infinite coin's brick, siphoning knowledge from better than me.
First project meeting :
- (CTO) OK, Lets copy paste everything needed from our last project and tomorrow we start development
And this is how we created a new project in ancient toolset2 -
Started a new job. Saas solution 10 years old. Not a single page of documentation....... Spent last three days trying to find code connections. #nodocumentation #y-u-no-doc2
-
Almost one year later, I am still in the same company. Lol, I don't have enough courage to apply for a new job. However, we learned a new framework and language this year, so it is not as boring as the last 2 years before.1
-
Been studying for the last 4 months, and was hoping to hold onto my job until I signed on the dotted line for a new job, but I just can't take this job anymore.
Does anyone have experience quitting their job to interview/find a new job? My only concern is that I have rent to pay, but I have some reserved funds to get through this time I believe.1 -
Wandb sweep runs for an interactive job but gives me a cuda error for illegal memory access for the slurm job. Spent the last 15 hours solving it and still can't enable multi gpu support on it. FML

So at my last job we had an AM deployment and a PM deployment. We had code reviews, QA, a slow roll process (deployed to three servers), monitoring process, and once everything checked out we fast rolled to the other servers.
At my current job we have a QA process, and we deploy once every three weeks.
My first job I deployed as needed, with no QA at all (I was the only web dev there).
I'm currently at a major e-commerce site, my last job was more of a click-bait site (though it still made millions in revenue each year).
So my question is: is there a "normal" as far as deployment schedules? I realize that each business type is going to have their own needs, but what's the "average" time between deployments? -
a Jenkins job that undeploys the last code base and deploys the newest. but if the previous deploy fails there is nothing to undeploy and therefore all future builds will fail. fml
