I hold two degrees in computer science/engineering and to this day, whenever I have to help my dad with any computer related stuff, he *always* says:
"Good thing we let you study this stuff!"

My parents didn't really care what I was doing, they were just happy I wasn't hanging around street corners.
They were also kind enough to buy me a computer or peripherals at Christmas. My sisters were not impressed with their Barbie houses and Sylvanian Families! 😂
Sisters: "Why does he get a computer?"

Mom is proud. My sister thinks I am a huge nerd. Dad is jealous because he would have done CS but it didn't really exist when he went to college. My grandparents think I can fix everything now (like resetting their facebook!password :D )3

While working, my dad would come and stand behind me. Looking at the indentation, he would sarcastically say things like "Don't you know how to write?" or "Why are you writing so ziggy zaggy? " or "All these years of education, for what?"
The first two or three times I really had a good laugh. But after that, I really get pissed off.1 -

Generally I don't discuss work with family as they just smile and nod.
I start by saying I'm a front end web developer, then simplify to I code websites, then I have to simplify again to say I make the bit you look at.
So now I just say I'm in IT.1 -

My dad is quite supportive.
After I graduated, he brought home a bunch of broken CPUs for me to fix. -
so my parents live close and my dad said his router died. I told him I had a spare. I loaded it dd-wrt on there and next time I went over there he asked about opening a port. I said I could do it for him. wouldn't let me touch it. he believes he is the computer genius and that I would brake it.
funny part is I work on servers for huge companies like Wells Fargo, Ally Bank and tons of others. I can configure a rack mount router but he doesn't trust me to touch a little crappy home linksys router lol.
no matter how smart you are they never want to admit their kid knows more about tech than they do.4 -
When I started studying CS, my dad was very upset. He told me he couldn't undersand why was I studying that if the only thing I could do afterwards was to open a computer repair shop and charge people to install antivirus and word. He's not saying shit now when I earn more than he has ever had and lend him money knowing he cannot repay me.6

The day I got my first interview, my dad kept fighting over the phone with me. He thought I was out with my girlfriend having fun. He told me no way anyone would waste their time interviewing me, let alone hire me.. Boy did I prove him wrong!1

My father was very supportive. Every time I was studying he'd take the dog for a walk, do the dishes and whatnot so I could study quietly and uninterrupted.
The rest of my family was supportive as well but not on that level. They always told me how awesome it is and do what I love. -

Me: I make web sites and test computers for bugs.
Mom: What is a bug?
Me: it is when a program does something you do not want it to do.
Mom: k, I don't understand how money is made in that. But, you know (random store) is hiring.2 -

I'm the first in 3 generations not be some sort of pipeline/mechical engineer. All my family works at the same company too.
I was partially accepting because at least a software engineer is some kind of engineer.
...And than my cousin graduated to be a gym teacher so I was then fully accepted 😂3 -

my dad bought me my first computer at 8, when I was 12 he thought I was always playing video games. at 19 he wouldn't pay for me to go get a bachelor's degree in computer science even though I was dual majoring with computer science and business. but he wonders how I always have money, he's 79 years old so not really unexpected.
my mom never understood what I was doing on computers but knew I was making money when I needed it, she's 61 years old and getting in bad shape so she's living with me and my wife. but she can tell when I'm thinking hard on a project and leaves me alone.
my wife doesn't know what I do and thinks I found a fucking magic money tree and she'll bug me after I spent 30 minutes planing a function out and I have to start over.5 -

"ooh, did you know that this guy made this and become rich, and this guy made this app and is rich now too, so why haven't you made anything yet?"

Nobody in my family understand what I do for a living. My dad's reaction was; "that's not a real job". He's a craftsman/painter. But that's okay, I make more money then him 😊💵

This is a true story. :(1 -
I grew up on a farm in western KS. My parents bought PCs when I was in grade school. First was a trs80 , then an Epson Equity 1+, where I built a spare key for it, and built levels in willy for my brother to beat. Then a 486 and pentium which I broke often. I ended up working at the same store in college for extra cash. While I'm an adverage developer, I do on and make decent $$. I still help them out with keeping their PCs running, for moms sewing, and dads Linux box. I figure I owe them for their investment in me. They gave me the tools to figure out what I want to do with my career and my life.2

when I graduated my dad would 'help' me in my job hunt by cutting out postings from the New York Times for "Lead Software Engineer" positions at Microsoft, Google etc despite the fact that I really was just trying to get a junior level position...2

When I told my mother I wanted to become a software dev, she went surprised but supported me to reach my goals. That's what family does. I'll always be thankful to her. (My family is quite short actually).
One year later, with my first salary I bought her a brand new iPad. 💕

I was supported a lot by my family, got provided with all the books I wish for... In a time when there was no Stackoverflow or good tutorials.

At first my dad was against it, I'm studying electronics engineering and he didn't want me to code because he is a software developer and he know that in my country it's really hard to make a living out of it. But since he realized that there is not much he can do about it he became really supportive and always review my code to help me improve it.2

When I became a dev my parents said: "it's not rocket science, or chemistry or anything good, but at least it's not stressful, or dangerous and we can get free tech support. I hope you are able to pay your own bills and find rent"
A few years, a degree and finding a supportive woman who is now my wife and and I make 4 time as much as my parents make now they want me to move back so they can get their tech support and see my wife I guess she is more social than I am -

My step father had gotten me into computer programming, more or less indirectly though.
My family supported my programming when it didn't involve destroying the computer.
All other times, it's just a magical black box to my mother -
*sometime during my sophomore year in university. I was a Biology major and just switched to Computer Science. I'm currently a senior graduating in the Spring.*
Me: "Mom and Dad I changed my major to Computer Science!"
Parents: "How will you be able to make a living playing games?"
Me: "I won't be playing games, I'll be coding/programming things and building software."
Parents: "I thought you wanted to become a doctor?"
Me: "Well I decided I wanted to choose a career that I like and I also didn't want to stay in school for 8 years. Also, the salary I can make as a developer/engineer is close to that of some doctors."
Parents: "Well we wanted you to go to be a physical therapist. We feel that it's the best option for you."
Me: "I think this is my best option because there aren't even enough people available to fill the jobs that will be around when I graduate. Which also means that I can make a higher salary."
Parents: "Well I guess we'll see if you can make a living and provide for a family just playing/making games."
Me: "That's fine I never needed your support anyways."
*My parents thought that if the job wasn't physical labor then it wasn't a "real job". (Idk how they decided that a Physical Therapist was a "real job") I moved out less than a year after this argument because I was constantly put down by my parents for coding/programming as well as playing video games in my spare time. They thought it was childish. This has shown me what I won't do when I become a parent.*
*Just a side note: I have paid for everything I own that wasn't gifted to me since I was 18 and had a job while attending college. I also got a scholarship to go to college, so my parents didn't have to pay for any of it.*2 -

My parents love the fact that I code and study computer science! They've always been super supportive of what I do. I just can't wait until they stop asking me to put on netflix whenever they want to watch a movie 😭1

I am a senior .net developer and I should be promoted to a software architect over Java and .net soon, and my parents independently asked my wife and me if my job was stable. They also asked me if I was worried about losing my job. They have no idea what I do and they think it is nuts that I get paid what I do for the hours I work... I doubt they will ever get it.2

I have played different roles on different companies and all my mother says to people is that I 'work with computers', same for friends that work on manufacturing or as sales engineers. It really pissed me off.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a carpenter like my dad, my parents reaction was always "just keep studying and you can do whatever you want, if you wanna study then do it and don't care about anything else we will help you".
Growing up I became a bit of a geek by hanging out with my uncles (they were the pc gurus in the old days, not anymore hehe). When choosing a college major I knew I wanted it in some kind of engineering, but had no idea besides that, I ended up choosing CS somewhat random and loved the thrill of solving problems so I stuck with it. During it all my parents only really said "as long as you study so you can have what we couldn't give you and do something you like, we will support you!"
I love my parents! 😄
Side note: I think my parents love to be able to brag about my accomplishments, kind of feels like they are entitled to though, since pretty much everything is thanks to them!4 -
Reading all your rants I'm glad my parents always supported me. They even helped to pick a good university and paid my dormroom all 6 semesters. I'm the first in the whole family who got a degree at university and I think they are very proud I have a stable job and a good income.
Though I doubt they know how rare (good) programmers are here and how much job offers I'm getting each week 😄 -

I'm extremely lucky that I had parents who encouraged it. My mother was a programmer herself, working with punch tape.
They brought the family home a BBC and let me fiddle with it. When we had a PC they let me get Visual Basic (ew) which got me really interested in programming. -

My mother still doesn't know what I do with my laptop, she thinks I either watch youtube or movies. The last day when I faced a code block and stared at the screen for 12 hours, she finally realised I am either insane or something is driving me nuts.
My Brother thinks it's one of the good decisions I have taken in life. Because he sees my interest when I talk about it to him.
Others think I can fix a broken PC or install softwares for them or do typing to get paid.2 -
well I start my first dev job in a week and a half. after telling my family I was resigning from my helpdesk support gig, they asked about the pay and didn't understand why the dev job payed more.
I tried to explain it and I think about half of them got it but the older half still just associate it as "computer stuff" -
That is strange. I have become developer at 27. Well, I 've decided to become a developer, to be honest, started to learn C++. I have tried lot's of things before: sale things, play bass guitar, copyrighting, driving a bulldozer. All reactions towards my choises was negative, and descision to become developer, programmer was like: "ok, do it"4

Don't remember the reaction. I was too young and it was too long ago, but my path was pretty set in stone since basic school. I started coding in second grade. My father is developer himself. So I got to code with my dad even before joining highschool - learning C was more usefull than Basic at school. And I got some simple tasks from him that he used in his projects :-) But during high school got few gigs of my own doing some sys admin stuff and some development. Got first serious job during university and my parents were just worried whether I'll finish university. Well dropped out before getting my masters but got at least bachelor degree. I think I turned out just fine :-)

While my cousin who works in hospitality always brings up interesting stories from her work, I have little to say about mine.
Sometimes my mom complains me being secretive of what I do. Everytime she says it I cry a little inside.1 -
In my university days, when I used to spend time elsewhere than curriculum classes : "You're not getting anywhere if you don't get a degree in whatever you want to work with in your life."
Today I earn more than all the cousins of my age combined. No more rants from anyone, anymore.
I might not have a professional degree, but my family still sees me as a responsible person. -
This is genuinely what happened the first time my mum asked what I specifically do on the computer..
Told her its web development, "but not like what you see, what produces what you see" (always seems to help explain). Anyway, a few minutes in she says "it's amazing isn't it, like how electricity works and stuff"1 -

sit down, get chores, stop halfway and rant, curse the slavery to the powers that be, being the parents ofcourse -

Dad: (frustrated seeing me in that posture) Everyone should be given a phone and you should start making something like a head gear that will hold that thing on thier eyes! Isn't that a "cool idea" you keep looking for your startup?

My dad didn't actually know what it was I did. He wanted to get me into hardware and network security type things. Basically the kind of things network engineers or systems admins do. I am still not sure he knows what I actually do.3

My family's reaction to working with computers.
Me: I'm going to study computer science.
Family: why would you do that you are never going to make any money.
Me: what have I been doing the last 15 months?

When I was finishing my telecommunications engineering degree, my aunt told me that a friend of her had a work offer for me and we arranged a casual interview.
After some small talk, the first thing this dude told me was: "as you have studied telecommunications, you must be interested on selling telecommunication devices right?". It happened to be a pyramidal phone reselling "work" offer.
I have never felt so attacked. My family thinks I studied 6 years to fucking sell phones.1 -
With all these wk18 responses about push backs from parents - had they never heard of Bill Gates or Steve Jobs? Especially the ones who don't think it's a real job or there's no money in it?1

Mother tells me my dad was slightly disappointed that I didn't become an optician. He passes away in my first semester so I never got to ask him.
She meanwhile is rather supportive but the older uncles etc think I am wasting my brain using the PC for so many hours.
Little brother learned some R by himself for courses and thinks it's a badass profession from what I see. -
My sister tell her boyfriend she's good at technology, he ask her to start the TV, my sister call me!

Mom: "This makes sense. You were always good with the computers."
Dad: "Can you help get my game working on my computer." -
parents : "ohh you wanna be a programmer ehh? so you should get a head start and go to kids programming school"
me 14 years old : "nice!" -
Me: "I got the job! I write computer programs now!"
Mom: "I'm so proud of you, -bgm-. Does that mean you can come over and take a look at my computer now? The speakers, whenever I go on Facebook, they make this popping noise--"
Me: "Gotta go, ma." -
me: Mum, Dad I want to a developer like [my older brother's name]
mum: I don't know what you guys do anyway. just make sure to be the best at it.
dad: Good luck, don't forget to start your own company soon enough. -
It seems a bit unusual, but my parents approved immediately of my going into programming (was 13 at the time), although their reasoning was because of the stereotype of those days that anyone who works with computers with computers makes a lot of money.

Me: maybe, I have to.
Mom: Please go to sleep and turn of that pc! You won't let me sleep.
Me: Mom is part of my job.
Mom: At least you know how to hack FB right?

well, my father told me that I need a real job. And you can only play games on computer. Well after more than 10 years when I have 8yrs of professional exp now Im earning enough and my father dont know what to say.2

I think mine is a bit cliched! All my relatives let alone mom and dad thought I only play games, while I was infact gaining knowledge. Obviously, much more needed, but I think I can say that I did good for a guy who didn't even have a PC till the first year of my bachelor's degree!1

No one was really surprised.
They mostly told me all my life that's what I should do because I always liked video games and was on the computer a lot.
I mean, I can see how it might have helped a bit, but it doesn't really have that much to do with it.1 -
My dad used to code some software in Fortran, Basic and C, so he's proud and happy to be able to show me the work he has done in the past.
My mom thinks I'll be rich someday.
My brother and sister wants me to code some games.
My girlfriends wants me to teach her.3 -
I am lucky that my family has always supported and been interested in whatever work I have been involved in. But I am definitely the family 'IT Help' guy which is fine...but sometimes excruciatingly annoying and requires vast amounts of patience.1

Neither one of them really *get* what I do, but mom likes to tell me his much she hates whatever program she uses at work as if I control the dev timeline.

My family members are support me, they know I'm unsaveable about this. Only my wife sais when I'm learning (I am before career change), you should stop playing and take care something useful instead. Or when I say I have to work on something, her answer is like, It's not work if you enjoy it and don't get money for it, it is only a hobby.

My grandmother can't think of me doing something else than being sat all day long, doing nothing in front of a screen and certainly not being tired or exhausted because it. And she always compare it to her, when her job was to sew fancy clothes.
I am not allowed to say it's a real job in front of her. So frustrating. -
Right before I became a dev I was in school for networking, and even got to do an internship with the networks my department of a school but then decided to do the codez. It's been 2 years since and my dad still thinks I do networking things since he hears me mention servers . (I'm a backend developer)

My Dad wanted me to become a Nurse, but he was impressed when I told him I'm going to take up Computer Science since it sounds fancy hehe But til this day he doesn't remember what I do for a living so when the topic pops up in one of our conversations, I have to explain over again. My Mom tells her friends that I am a "Computer Executive", no matter how many times I correct her. 😂

I was lucky and have a mother who understands a lot of work goes into making programs work. My dad is basically a technophobe and struggles with the TV and Microwave, but would prefer me to have a job I enjoy rather than one that's going to put me in an early grave.

My family was super chill about it. My dad just does his best to let me know I need to stop talking when I start talking "over his head".

My father is a programmer! He loves it and my grandpa realized with joy that I might make him proud by becoming successful! The family is proud and tends to laugh at rants here etc! <3
