I went to school for mechanical engineering and I can say that people think about mechanical engineers the same way that most people think about software engineers.
To software engineers:
"Hey, can you help me fix my computer?"
To mechanical engineers:
"Hey, can you help me fix my car?"
I wonder if chemical engineers get: "Hey, can you help me mix my meth?" -
@missionearth: I imagine student loans would be paid off way faster as a meth cook.
"Guys, I'm going to change my studies next year, I'll be studying IT, programming, stuff about computers"
"You mean, they threw you out of mechanical engineering and you are forced to do that?"
"No, I chose it myself, I'm not interested in mechanical engineering anymore."
"But you love it, you repaired your car! (WTF???) But are you sure there are jobs for what you are studying now?"
"Well, much more than in mechanical engineering actually..."
Like, they didn't notice that I'm fond of IT stuff since I'm 13... C'mon guys...
