The company is bad-mouthing the dev that I replaced:
"oh he liked to do things in a separate environment first and it took him time to complete tasks"
Sufficied to say he was not a good culture fit, so they let him go.
Clearly I am in a place with "Just do it" attitude2 -
Docker.
Tried very hard to like it.
Went through every possible option of making it work properly in every situation.

the entire setup and all is the same as the previous corporation, just a different logo. if anything these people are even more restrictive in what they let you install on Windows. damn it at least give me WSL23 -
We have an open space at the office, and you can hear things people say in their teams meetings.
Most common question is: "When do you think you will be done with ... task?"2 -
Why is working with C# and .NET Core great again?
All jobs I see require knowledge of .NET Core 8. Meanwhile jobs at Microsoft require knowledge and experience with Java.3 -
I see all IT engineers running scared like "they're going to fire/replace all of us". This is the kind of mentality the company wants.
Next time you wanna be an ass to your colleague remember that. Neither of you might reach retirement age. Both of you will be replaced. None of you stands to gain anything from winning the argument2 -
Tech lead doesn't focus on the fact that I solved the problem, only says stuff like:
- "yeah but this is why we are Agile"
- "did someone else review your code?"
- "you can't expect me to have to understand what the program does"
- "did you get permission from X to solve this problem?"
- "talk to someone else if you have any problem. only come to me with answers"
I guess I don't have to explain I don't like my tech lead.12 -
They really put an end to the whole digital nomad trend quickly don't you think?

Just delivered most difficult project I had so far, despite all issues managed to deliver (on time). Had help from team but some colleagues only contributed with "I'll tell X and Y to do it".
Told my manager it was really hard for me and sometimes I had to work some hours in the weekends, once even entire weekend with no extra pay, just to meet deadlines.
My manager just told me in my performance review that I didn't deliver on time and compared me to the UX designer that delivers Figma designs on time for like 8 projects and never has to work overtime. I guess dev work is the same as Figma design around here.
Then manager proceeded to tell me that he wants what's best for me.
Safe to say no raise this year.6 -
I am talking with the tech lead for a solution he is proposing for the project.
I already finished coding it yesterday because of our "just deliver" culture. Our tech lead is opposing this culture. The deadline established by the manager is basically tomorrow.
Is this right approch for a tech lead? To oppose the management established deadline?4 -
Tech lead is getting on my friggin nerves. The tech lead keeps all the important info about the project for himself, does no sort of coding just merges stuff on Git and makes me handle any small fry problems which give me little to no insight into the project.
Then complains to the manager about the fact that nobody will help him and he has no time to do any work.
Meanwhile he creates own little club of people to talk to and stops talking to us devs.
Is this how its always been?7 -
My bank created a "new and improved" banking app asking me to take a selfie after first sending them a picture of my id.
I am already a customer of the bank, they have a copy of my id, why do they also want a selfie?
Also with the old banking app I could just call them from my phone number (which they also have) and they confirmed it was me over the phone by asking 2 questions and then provided me with a code to just enable the app on my personal phone.10 -
First day back from holiday.
CEO announces everyone the pandemic is over and everyone has to return to the office.
Talked about how good it is to come and crack a joke with a colleague and that they care about our wellbeing.
I have barely been able to even focus on work because of all the chaos in the company since the beginning of the year (many interviews for hiring new devs, company events, meet etc.)
Colleagues talking about the fact that nobody can work from the office given all the chaos in the projects and nobody will come because they can't fire us all.
I have to answer to an outsourcing company today for a new fully remote full stack .NET developer position for the same pay, but might be risky in terms of what I can actually deliver in terms of code.
What advice can you give me? Jump the boat or not?12 -
I am starting as a full stack developer next month. This is my first serious job after college.
Do you think that the first three months used as probationary period are to figure out if you can handle the job?
The position includes some technologies I know very little about, but I'm hoping to figure them out fast as soon as I get my hands on the code (with no documentation). How do you learn once you start on a new job? Contact with co-workers will be reduced since I will start by working remotely. Any suggestions on how I can pick up speed and gain as much knowledge in a short amount of time without burning out?9 -
I just realized with this pandemic it's better to live in a dirt-cheap country, in a house you own, have a second hand car, work as a dev from home, become good with tools in your spare time, grow your own food in the garden.
Fuck this impossible system with it's promises of finding a cure and it's high pay but high taxes and expensive rent for living in a shitty rented apartment with no friends around, nothing to do than watch YouTube and play video games and be depressed half the time, then die because of lack of phisical activity.
I used to think countries that had good infrastructure were the best. Now public transportation is the worst idea around here, since no one wears masks and pretends all is well.
This is actually a decision I need to take next week. If you believe things will "get back to normal" please give me your input as it is valuable to me.28 -
I've seen some posts on remote work. I believe all companies should permanently implement remote work if they cannot arrange a proper office.
I have been working for a company where programmers and project managers work in the same room, and sometimes I was trying to understand some problem in code when managers were screaming next to me at other developers or on the phone, because they couldn't hear themselves.
This happend so often that I would literally go home burned out.
Also there were people coming in the room to talk to the managers or just passing next to my screen every couple of minutes which was extremely distracting.
I bought a pair of over ear noise cancelling headphones and on top of that used ear plugs, but eventually I developed a very strange stress condition over the course of a year. Also listening to music while trying to focus for 8 hours a day while at work is very tiresome.
Also couldn't quit because it was my first job. -
I have struggled with leet code two years ago when I started university and was learning programming.
Now I am finally set to have a leet code interview at a large company, followed by a take home problem and a system design problem.
I started looking into leet code again today and I feel like I could had done so much more back then if I just had some help.
Back then I made the mistake of doing leet code problems in Java since that's all I knew and it used to make many simple problems last for hours.
I want to try it out using Python this time around since I don't have to focus on every little detail when I solve the problem. The company focuses on Python, Go and JS but I don't know Go and JS well enough.
What do you think? Is it a good idea or not? Should I just try JavaScript?
Also do you have any advice for this kinds of interviews?
i think the leet code one will be the toughest.
Some suggest I should read Cracking the coding interview, but I don't see the point of doing that

Worked for a couple of years at this company.
I have been set to solve some of the most excruciating issues (that nobody even wanted to hear about) in regards to many technologies.
This has resulted in little development experience, a lot of frustrations (even damage to my health), and low performance (at least from the manager's perspective)
Now I have to learn another useless technology and then maybe I will be allowed to continue working there - BUT at least this one is will allow me to do actual development.
What would you do? Stay or find another job?
To me it feels that this is not what a future hopefully competent developer should be doing.6 -
Developers that prefer to play the asshole card because it is easier than going through the trouble of acting like a normal person and lose a chunk of their time.
I come across this more and more: if I have a conversation with a random stranger at an event, and we touch upon a new thing that neither one of us knows about or whatever, there is this sudden cut off when one stops the conversation and leaves, rather than staying and keep on exploring the subject and risk of saying something stupid.
Am I just in the wrong place talking to the wrong people?
Or is there some developer budget your time manual that I haven't heard about?2 -
That time when you are taking about personal projects with other developers and their past frustrations come into the project discussion all of the sudden. Like, I just wanted to communicate about this great idea I got with other developers, not about how it cannot be done, or how someone else thinks I cannot get it done. I can stand this happening the first 1000 times, but not the next 10000 times.
I feel that this happens to other people as well, but there is just no talk about it anywhere.3
