I fucking hate MS Teams!
I do not use it at all, but there is another company of our group that has it. At the beginning, I could just access the website and talk to them over there. Ok, the page was not good, but that used to work for me.
The last meeting I had with them, the web version did not exist anymore, they just made me install the app. Luckily there is an official Linux version, so I could install it. I got late to the meeting, but could make it.
Today I had a meeting with a client. Important stuff and Teams did not let me use it because I had no business account with Teams enabled on it.
I've tried to use one of my personal accounts, to create a new one, to enable Teams, I've clicked, enabled, allowed every single thing they asked, but I ended up on the Teams home page again or with Teams asking me to call people on Skype instead of using Teams.
I've managed to create a company on Microsoft account on which I had to be responsible to my workers (!?!?!?) and it finally opened the Teams app, but when I try to enter the client meeting link, it just opens the app with no error message at all.
Fuck Teams and fuck Microsoft!2 -
The problem when you spend basically all if your technical life working by yourself, is that you are not used to understand programs you didn't create. Specially when there are no documentation or a single line of useful comment.
I've tried to help in an open source software just to get frustrated and fall short because I couldn't understand where things were getting initiated/called and I don't have too much free time to keep trying/searching.
Any tip here? I don't really need to learn that, but I think it is important. We never know about the future and I don't want to get stuck/uninployed in the future if I loose my ~15 years job someday.5 -
Why is it hard to improve privacy on IM?
I am improving again my online privacy these days. I was not using Twitter anymore for a few years, so I created a Mastodon account these days. I am still find interesting people over there, but it was quite simple.
But for IM, things get harder. What to use? XMPP? Matrix? Both appears to be good and bad sides. And it makes no sense I just install any of them and try to connect to random users. I actually need to make people I know to use the software as well.
Not only that, I will still need to keep other APPs on my phone, as they are necessary for some people. So I will still need a bunch of installed software. -
My dear diary,
Today, the guy that convinced the boss to completely replace our functional CMS website (marketing used to update it) with a static one he was writing from scratch in PHP + jQuery, has published our MailChimp Api Key on StackOverflow, because he couldn't make the API to work.
Boss didn't complain, but I don't think he understood what happened. Just asked the guy for not doing that again.
It was a crazy day.12 -
First issue with Manjaro. I am not sure when it begun, but now, every single time linux uses the SWAP file, the entire system stays unresponsive, freezing (not even the mouse moves), so I need to wait until it finishes using the SWAP to be able to use it again.
I have 16GB RAM and I was not noticing that, but for some reason, Chromium started to use a little bit of the SWAP when the Hardware Acceleration were turned on and the mouses started to stop moving for a few ms/seconds.
So I tried it out: opened a VM with 8GB RAM and done, my PC were frozen for about 10 minutes, until I were able to use it again.
When I turn on the swap file, everything works fine again, even the VM. It does not matters with the SWAP is on a SSD or not.12 -

So, after being remanaged from Localization PM to create an Automation department, my boss now asked me help to manage projects again, but not leaving the automation.
Let's see how things will happen.1 -
Focus...
I am on vacations and I thought: well, let me take a look at Shopify. People uses that, may be learning it could be good.
So I created a Dev account, a sample store and opened the docs.
"Oh, you should use this and that JS library and work with React (link to react)"
So I clicked the link and now I am learning React...5 -
It was back on 96~97, using Pascal on a 386 for sure. But the program itself was probably a calculator. We want to learn how to make a program that would stay running on background to copy itself for other files, like a virus. But we didn't intend to build one. It was just to learn how to do that.
My first visual came some time later, on Win 95, made in Delphi. It were a music player, something like winamp.
Good times! :)3 -
I have configured on my local desktop a pi.hole and Stubby. They were working fine and happy together, but after a comment from @FrodoSwaggins about local DNS server, I trying to add Unbound as well.
So, on my configuration, pi.hole points to unbound, which points to Stubby. Everything local, each one with their own ip@port listener, but it does not work.
If I point Unbount to an external DNS (Quad9, for exemple), it works. If I point pi.hole to Stubby, it works. But the 3 of them does not work.
Does anyone has any idea what could be happening?
Thanks!6 -
So we are implementing a big and very complete localization management system on my company. The system has great features, indeed, but:
1. We cannot use the browser back button, because it is js and it appears no one cared about it (I am not a js Dev, but you can UAE the back button on my site that has js);
2. It is very customizable, but not intuitive. So you have one million options and you never know where to change what you need;
3. It has a save button everywhere, but most options are saved automatically, so you never know when you need to save. Actually, people from the webapp company use the save button as refresh, once we cannot use the browser refresh button;
4. Combo boxes load the elements while you scroll them, so to scroll to the bottom, you need to keep scrolling several times, waiting it to load the elements;
5. It does not allow you to open more than one tab of it at the same time. So if you need to see more than one information from different items, you need to navigate and wait the loading times to see what you need;
6. Emails are not sent in a different thread. So each action that send emails you need to keep waiting until the emails are sent (sometimes there are several emails sent in one action) to continue using it;
7. They not only store and send back your password by email if you loose it, but, as admin, if I click the button to send the user password to him/her, it keeps a copy of the email with the user password in my sent items;
8. To be able to send emails (they are really necessary), I need to include my SMTP info with login and password. So they have not only the system password saved, but everyone email login and password as well.
I am sure there is more, but I can't remember for now, and we are still trying to figure it out how to back our data, as it appears the only possible backup is their own.5 -
I am thinking to migrate from a shared hosting (I have a few websites, some of them with WordPress) to a 2GB RAM droplet, but I am concerned about having to create a mail server.
Any opinion about that?
Thanks! :)11 -
"Back-end" ahahahaha
Translating:
Back-end developer (São Paulo / Brazil)
Vacant job: Back-end developer
Assignments: Work as a Back-end developer, PHP, and MySQL. Develop tools/applications for the web with a DB.
Technical skills: Technical knowledge in PHP, Framework Code Igniter, HTML5, JavaScript (jQuery, Bootstrap, Json, and Ajax), responsive layouts and WordPress.
Projecting and modeling DB Knowledge. Good knowledge of usability, Cross-browser (IE7+, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari).
Desirable: Knowledge on Graphic Design and Front-end projects1 -
And it is official: I am not a project manager anymore.
My Boss has just created a new Automation department of which I am the only employee. So, now, I am an Automation Engineer.
More tools, maybe code and almost no contact with clients anymore. But I am gong to miss a few of them. :)2 -
Question: is it common to a developer to have lots of tasks to do at the same time, so you don't have sure what you need to do first, specially when you have 2 or more urgent projects?
That is one of the things I most hate on managing.8 -
function normalize() {
console.log(this.coords.map(n => n / this.length));
}
normalize.call({coords: [0, 2, 3], length: 5});
Why? Why, javascript? Why do you invert the function and the 'this' keyword? It just confuses me and (at this time) I cannot think of a place where this would be really necessary.3 -
You know you learned a lot in the last year when you try to change something on a website you made 1 year ago and it is almost impossible.
The code is not well structured. PHP mixed with HTML, functions that should be organized as a class etc.
I really, really, need to refactor the entire site!4 -
Who remember these clips and relation between them?
https://youtube.com/watch/...

I just love these videos for that... I really miss that time.4 -
phpMyAdmin
Well, it is not my favorite open source project... I almost never have to use DBs, but when I do, it just saves my life. I can create the tables, keys without worring about any SQL command.
But day to day life is GNU/Linux, Firefox, bash/zsh, git... There are lots of opensource tools that I use, and love, everyday. :)2 -
So... I had to create a VBA macro, ok, it is very simple and it will be necessary during some DOC files reviewing. Ok, not a problem.
I created the functions, added some quick launch buttons and saved it as a .DOTM file. I even included an autoload form with an Install button, so the file copy itself to the Word Startup folder. Nice, everything working just fine.
But... there are two Mac users in the company. I do not have a Mac, but the first thing I thought was I hardcoded the "\" to check if the file already exists and to copy the file. Using the system separator would do the trick. The macro would be copied and everything is done. But...
1. The quick launch buttons do not appear on Mac;
2. The "Application.PathSeparator" returns an ":"
3. The "application.StartupPath" returns an invalid path (something like "Mac's Name:Application:etc")
4. The copy command is not working, the Dir command appears to be not identifying the path etc
5. I need to have it working by Monday morning.2 -
Pic without code as my light bulb has burned and I will not be able to fix that this week.
But I can update the picture later.1 -
I am using Manjaro as the main OS on my computer. But I have an original Windows 10 license, as well as an Office 2013.
I want/need to have them installed on PC, as I need to use it sometimes.
But if I install my Windows 10, it will certainly destroy my grub and I know I will have a hard time to make it work again.
Would it be a good idea to install them on a virtual PC? I know it would not be good with games, but the only game I have is GTA IV (that I am not even sure if it still works on Windows 10).
Thanks!4 -
Reading this rant below remembered me once that I was taking with a generic person at the street about computers. At some time, she said: "my boyfriend is a Hacker. A real hacker. He knows everything about computers. I am going to give him a book that he wants for his birthday: Linux for dummies."
She was not telling a joke...

I just discover vim-anywhere and tmux at the same time.
It's mind blowing!
Every time I was changing something on my website over SSH I have to go out for a few minutes and I have a TimeOut.
Vim-anywhere does not need any comments.

Inspired by someone here who said we should be the Shakespeare of code, how about we comment/show any great, clean and open code that we found here?2

I really like to use PHP. It's not so interesting language as C# is, but I like it. But every now and them I read someone complaining about PHP.
So let's go: as PHP is not an exactly good language to backend, what would be a good one to use with my personal projects?
Thanks!17 -
The best dev advice that I had was when Google Apps recommended me DevRant, related to the apps I had installed. I learned so much since them.
