Get ready for the first ever devRant live stream event! @trogus and I will be making an exciting announcement/launch live on our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/devrantapp) this Wednesday (October 4th) at 9pm EDT. After the announcement we will also take some questions from devRant users who are watching. The questions can be about the announcement or anything devRant-related in general. We hope to get some fun questions so feel free to ask anything you want.
We look forward to having some fun with our first live stream! If you can't make it, don't worry, the replay will be available on YouTube and we'll likely do some more streams in the future. Please let me know if you have any questions and we hope many of you can join us!
Edit: the stream will be available here once it begins tomorrow: https://youtube.com/watch/... I will also post another announcement rant when we go live!53 -
*goes on site looking for free anime to stream*
Site: *popup* we noticed you're using an ad blocker! Please turn it off to continue using our site!
Me, an intellectual: *opens chrome developer tools, finds the HTML for the popup, opens its corresponding CSS and adds display: none; continues watching anime blissfully, without popups and ads*
Who said being a developer wasn't a super power?18 -

Wait so I'm not allowed Spotify but it's alright for a manager to stream movies?
Don't give that we're not licensed to play music pretty sure we're not a licensed cinema either.
Either it's one rule for all or none at all enjoy your productivity dip from the dev team.8 -
Once my teacher was taking my viva and she asked me to explain the below line.
Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in)
I told her that this creates a newScanner instance which points to the input stream passed as argument
She shouted at me and said that I am wrong.
She explained to me that this line creates a new object not an instance10 -
UPDATE: devRant Trans-Oceanic Journey Community Project
It was a mere 12 days ago that I asked the question; 'Could devRanters, as a community, build a 21st Century Technology-Laden ‘devRant devie-Stressball-in-a-Bottle’ and send it on a journey across the Atlantic ocean?
I am thrilled to report that devRanters enthusiastically accepted this difficult challenge. A core team quickly formed and a tremendous amount of research and progress has been made in a short period of time. I want to give you a high level-flavor of what we are doing. Please keep in mind we still need your help. We welcome all develops to take part in this journey.
I want to give appreciation to the devRant Founders @dfox and @trogus. Without your support and sponsorship this project would not have been possible. devRant brought us together and it a reality. Devie journeying across the Ocean the Columbus sailed will stir the imagination of children and adults worldwide when we launch on May 1, 2017.
Some of the research and action items in progress:
- Slack and trello environments were created to capture research and foster discussion.
- A Stony Brook University Oceanography Professor suggested the Gulf Stream would be a good pathway across the ocean. We researched it very and agree. The Gulf Stream has been a trans-Atlantic conduit for hundreds of years. We are deciding whether to launch from Cape Hatteras, NC or the Virginia coast. Both have easy access to the rapid currents in the Gulf Stream.
- We are researching every detail of the Gulf Stream to make the journey easier and faster for devie. We have maps and a team member gathered valuable ideas reading a thorough book – ‘The Gulf Stream’.
- We decided on using a highly resilient plastic rather than glass for the bottle material. Plastic is much lighter, faster and glass breaks down more easily. The lightweight enclosure will allow us to take full advantage of waves and ample trade winds. We are still discussing the final design as we want to minimize friction and mimic the non-locomotion fish that migrate thousands of miles riding the Gulf Stream.
-The enclosure might be 3D printed unless we can locate a commercial solution. We have 3D specs and are speaking with some experts. There are advantages and dis-advantages to each solution.
- We will be using Iridiums' RockBLOCK two-way satellite technology to bounce lat-long coordinate pings off their 36 low-orbit satellites. The data will be analyzed by our devRant devie analysis software. IOS and Android public apps being built by the team will display devie's location throughout the journey in.
- Arduino will be used as the brains
- Multiple sensors including temperature and depth are being considered
-A project plan will be published to the team Friday 12/9. Sorry I am a few days late but adding some new ideas.
There are still a lot of challenges we must overcome and we will.
That’s all for now. I will send updates and all ideas / comments are valued.6 -
THERE IS NOTHING AS FRUSTRATING AS WAITING FOR A RESET PASSWORD MAIL... ONLY TO GET A STREAM OF 16 PLAINTEXT PASSWORDS 30 MINUTES LATER, WITH NONE OF THEM WORKING.
Fuck you, IKEA. 🖕11 -
Me: I have an input stream!
Library: I want a file.
Me: I can see your code, you will convert it to an input stream! Don't any of your constructors take an input stream?
Library: No. I want a file. Okay, you can also include an encoding.
Me: I don't care about encoding.
Library: Fine, just give me the file then.
Me: You mean I have to somehow convert my input stream into an actual file so I can give it to you?
Library: You're gradually catching on, yes.
Me: Can I add a new constructor myself that takes an input stream?
Library: Sure! Good luck in getting it approved by the maintainers and the new jar distributed everywhere, including Maven Central before your deadline.
Me: Fine, I'll just rearchitect everything so I can give you an actual file.
Library: And then everything will be fine.

If you ever feel like having a good laugh, just watch a flat-earthers video/live-stream.
I can't understand how something like this can even happen, it's so insanely ridiculous.
HOW THE FUCK CAN A HUMAN BEING LIVING IN 2018 BELIEVE THAT THE EARTH IS A FLAT DISC WITH A GLOBE ABOVE IT.12 -

Most... Awkward... Video call... Ever!
Ended about 7 minutes ago. This one guy... Seriously! I mean... 🤷♂️ Everyone thought he's just uncomfortably open but when he finally got out of the shower he panicked, screamed like a girl, fell down and covered his camera asking: "Guys, when you were talking just now... Was there anything... Like... *Weird* on my stream?"10 -
Confirmed, Walmart runs on Linux, and their promotional photo stream is in a folder called

I swear I work with mentally deranged lunatics.
Dev is/was using TFS's web api to read some config stuff..
Ralph: "Ugh..this is driving me crazy. I've spent all day trying to read this string from TFS and it is not working"
Me: "Um, reading a string from an web api is pretty easy, what's the problem?"
Ralph: "I'm executing the call in a 'using' statement and cannot return the stream."
Me: "Why do you need to return a stream? Return the object you are looking for."
Ralph: "Its not that easy. You can return anything from TFS. All you get back is a stream. Could be XML, JSON, text file, image, anything."
Me: "What are you trying to return?"
Ralph: "XML config. If I use XDoc, the stream works fine, but when I step into each byte from the stream, I the first three bytes have weird characters. I shouldn't have to skip the first three bytes to get the data. I spent maybe 5 hours yesterday digging around the .Net stream readers used in XDoc trying to figure out how it skips the first few bytes."
Me: "Wow...I would have used XDoc and been done and not worried about that other junk."
Ralph: "But I don't know the stream is XML. That's what I need to figure out."
Me: "What is there to figure out? You do know. Its your request. You are requesting a XML config."
Ralph: "No, the request can be anything. What if Sam requests an image? XDoc isn't going to work."
Me: "Is that a use-case? Sam requesting an image?"
Ralph: "Uh..I don't know...he could"
Me: "Sounds like your spending a lot of time doing premature optimization. You know what your accessing TFS for, if it's XML, return XML. If it's an image, return an image. Something new comes along, modify the code to handle it. Eazy peezy."
<boss walks in from a meeting>
Boss: "Whats up guys?"
Ralph: "You know the problem with TFS and not being able to stream the data I had all day yesterday? I finally figured it out. I need to keep this TFS reader simple. I'll start with the XML configs and if we more readers later, we can add them."
Boss: "Oh yea, always start simple and add complexity only when you need it."
Frack...Frack..Frack...you played some victim complaining to anyone who would listen yesterday (which I mostly ignored) about reading data from TFS was this monumental problem no one could solve, then you start complaining to me, I don't fall for the BS, then tell the boss the solution was your idea?
Lunatic or genius? Wally would be proud.4 -

Chinese streamers stream on the street under the bridge. The reason? They stream near a rich neighbourhood, so the algorithm recommends them to rich tenants. They donate more.11

When I have low motivation, I just remember that through my teaching, my 79 year old grandfather learned how to stream videos on his own, asked me to teach him how to pirate movies using torrents and bought himself a smartphone and now sends me emojis.
If he can do all that, I can tackle my Dapp. Thank you Dedushka.2 -
I'm thinking about doing a live coding stream on twitch this saturday, late afternoon or evening (CET).
I've never done a live stream before.
Do you have any suggestions or interests?
I'm thinking about something like a small RESTful API with Angular4/TypeScript (frontend, single page application) and CraftCMS/PHP (backend) with somebasic theory about HTTP requests / response, redirecting, data transfer and interfaces et cetera...
The duration will be around 2-4 hours, maybe longer if I have enough Mate & Beer.
But it's all just an idea at the moment. 😉
I will create an empty project for the stream on my Github and push to it during streaming, so you can pull it live or later.17 -
wooah.... devRant's front page got a whole redesign....
... though it feels sort of main-stream now...17 -
Huge dev-team presentation today with YouTube livestream link available to all clients.

Moving away from technology and becoming self-sufficient. A cottage with a stream on the edge of a forest, a large garden, some chickens and other animals, and no smart devices, managers, tickets, KPAs, performance reviews, legendary devs shitting out an endless stream of bugs, etc.
Peace and quiet.
And freedom at last.
That’s success.
That’s the ultimate success: escape.13 -
Customer: *brings in laptop and printer* My internet has been terrible lately, so this printer hasn't been working very well as a wireless printer. Could you fix it?
Me: Well, it wouldn't help much because it would be hooked up on our network, so when you take it home it won't work on yours.
Customer: I don't understand...
Me: *thinks for a second* okay, so it's like you have two streams of water. Whatever you do in the first stream doesn't effect the second stream of water.
Customer: I still don't understand....
Me: Never mind. Just go home and give us a call. We'll be able to help you better that way.
Customer: Okay, thanks!
Coworker: You can't cross the streams, Rider!2 -
I did a stream last night with 4 other devs/ sysops. The theme were ranting and alcohol, lasted for almost 8 hours.
When I woke up this afternoon, I regret it all, but totally doing it next month too6 -
My new phone will (as a default feature) discover the devices that my housemate is using to stream content on the WiFi network - and let me control them.

So, I'm living in a completely computer illiterate family and I was called to help my father with something on a Laptop where he wanted to stream his favorite Soccer-Club.
So I walk up to him, ask what's wrong, and he says (roughly translated from German) "That thing doesn't work!"
And I'm just like ((Wat u mean))
So I ask him to explain the problem in detail.
Apparently his streaming service wasn't loading his stream.
Well damn I say, try searching for the problem on Google and find a solution.
((But no no no imma just call my son for everything that's freaking wrong with tech, he sure knows what to do))
As I'm not that experienced with Webservices as of yet, I had no idea what to do.
He was fucking furious!
"You always act like you know everything about tech and programs and stuff and can't even help me with fixing this Stream-Thing?!"
I responded simply by saying "It's not my area of work!"
Seems like he didn't know the difference between TECH-JESUS and hobbyist software engineer.
So I stand there and he just goes on one of these typical boomer tech illiterate rants, of which I'm sure you can imagine enough being on this platform.
tl;Dr; It pisses me of big time how people are not even trying to understand technology, nor attempting to help themselves by eG. Googling some simple problem, but rather just ask around and then being pissed off if the asked person just doesn't know the answer or can't help!5 -
Not hacking per se, but I noticed an email floating between ISP and director about radius server login details, promptly saved for future reference.
One day noticed someone downloading mucho dataro... Pissed me off, interrupting my video stream.
Logged into radius server, blocked MAC address.1 -
Completely got my localhost and live database confused and dropped the whole live server. And there was a power outage so the last backup is from Friday. Luckily not completely live, but still having a stream of people walking in. Also pretty obvious that they are talking about me especially since there's no other shes in the department.5

So I want to watch Olympics events on TV but apparently need a premium cable channel not in my package (NBC-SN).
BUT I can use my cable login to stream it online and in the NBC Sports app
AND the app supports Chromecast internally
In the end I still get to watch on my TV but... Why all this trouble....4 -
Diary of an insane lead dev: day 447
pdf thumbnails that the app generates are now in S3 instead of saved on disk.
when they were on disk, we would read them from disk into a stream and then create a stream response to the client that would then render the stream in the UI (hey, I didn't write it, I just had to support it)
one of my lazy ass junior devs jumps on modifying it before I can; his solution is to retrieve the file from the cloud now, convert the stream into a base64 encoded string, and then shove that string into an already bloated viewmodel coming from the server to be rendered in the UI.
i'm like "why on earth are you doing that? did you even test the result of this and notice that rendering those thumbnails now takes 3 times as long???"
jr: "I mean, it works doesn't it?"
seriously, if the image file is already hosted on the cloud, and you can programmatically determine its URL, why wouldn't you just throw that in the src attribute in your html tag and call it a day? why would you possibly think that the extra overhead of retrieving and converting the file before passing it off to the UI in an even larger payload than before would result in a good user experience for the client???
it took me all of 30 seconds to google and find out that AWS SDK has a method to GetPreSignedURL on a private file uploaded to s3 and you can set when it expires, and the application is dead at the end of the year.
JFC. I hate trying to reason with these fuckheads by saying "you are paid for you brain, fucking USE IT" because, clearly these code monkeys do not have brains.3 -
Anybody do any cloud gaming? As a Linux user, I lack access to a reliable Windows gaming machine, so I rent one through paperspace, and pay 40¢ an hour to stream gameplay though parsec to my Linux desktop.
I've been playing a lot of Subnautica lately with it. How about you?13 -
Building a wheel is great.
Building a steering wheel is also great
Building a brakes pedal is amazing.
Making them work asynchronously - not that good of an idea is it...
Who the fuck thought separating data stream (copying bytes) from stream control (when does the stream start/end) is a good idea...?
- open a connection
- send data to the stream
- send() returns
- close the connection
Apparently, the send() does not copy the data and returns. Instead, it enqueues the data copying task end returns. When does the actual copying start? IDK. When does it end? IDK. Can I close the conn? NO!
This thing is UNUSABLE. And I'd riddle it with reflection-based workarounds if it weren't for the static methods.
Fuck!3 -
Most of us can and have gotten freelance work before, but I've only met a couple of alleged full time freelancers, and the idea has always fascinated me. For those of you who actually are able to pull it off, what's a typical day like, and how do you maintain a steady stream of clients?6

I have an Android app suggestion:
A different alarm clock.
- wakes you up by increasing ring tone, from least to most, each step taking at least two seconds.
- you can give it a stream url (e.g. online radio or yt) and it uses that to wake you up.
- you give it an offline ringtone as well, in case the stream doesn't play.
- has repeated snooze. You hit the off button once and it goes to snooze. You hit it twice or trice and it is off. Otherwise, it rings again in 2-60 minutes. (User preference)
- is free. 😛
Shouldn't take long to make. I'd make it myself if I had the technical capabilities right now. Do link me if you make it or if you know of one already existing. (The existing ones I've found so far, I have issues with unnecessary permissions they ask mostly.)18 -
Intermediate programming exam today(in Java):
5 min before the exam started the guy next to me :"Hey can you tell me what a lambda-expression is? And why do we need streams? "
According to the assignment description you actually had to solve nearly every assignment with lambdas and the stream API.
Sorry mate.6 -
I should be making features today.
But I ended up watching a 2-hour stream of Akai Haato of Hololive.
Sometimes working at home is a blessing and a curse6 -
I hope not too many people followed this advice. It was a tutorial for making your Raspberry Pi act as a network-accessible CCTV camera, and the tutorial was good, but that end part... yikes. Don't just port forward your http stream!
At least I know how I can just have it accessible only through my OpenVPN.rant privacy security don't just forward ports to the outside your cctv is gonna land on a webcam page2 -
Yo...wtf
A node package, event-stream. Was infected. Basically, the exploit seems to steal data from mining cryptocurrencies. What was amazing was the github repo owner's attitude about it. I would normally agree with it not being his issue anymore if it weren't because:
1. The pendejo did not archive the repo to indicate that he is free of fault and not his anymore.
2. You can't just entrust a fucking software lib to any pendejo that asks.
3. Eat a dick nigga
Peace out

Finally!
Got my Minecraft server running inside Docker to properly stream logs through Go to this shitty web interface. Fucking hell I didn't think this would be so fucking complicated!

Alright, so I am going to start doing dev streams
twitch.tv/retraxa
I am going to stream with @ewpratten at some point tonight. Were gonna be working on robot code and my personal website. I have literally 0 reputation on Twitch so if this doesn't work out I can't really loose. If y'all wanna stop by and give us some stuff to converse about, cool articles or extreme politics and our belief systems go ahead.7 -
I've made the json protocol. It's a protocol containing only json. No http or anything.
To parse an json object from a stream, you need a function that returns the length of the first object/array of all your received data. The result of that function is to get the right chunk of the json to deserialize.
For such function, json needs to be parsed, so I wrote that function in C to be used with my C server and Python client. I finally implemented a C function into python function that has a real benefit / use case. Else you had to validate but by bit by the python json parser and that's slow while streaming. Some messages are quite big.
Advantage of this protocol is that it's full duplex.
I'm very happy!36 -
I worked for a streaming company where I was interviewing a candidate for a device position. I tried digging into his passions and hobbies and he told me he was using rasp pi:s to automatically download torrents and stream to Kodi.
He really wasn't reading up on which company he applied for.2 -
I'm doing a short 1 hour livestream on twitch on installing CraftCMS, plugin development and maybe Angular 4 setup, if there is enough time.

I found a way to make me procrastinate less on my own projects today! Stream development of it to Twitch.
Yes, there may be nobody watching most of the time; yes there may be nobody interested in a wall of text and no voice; but you just feel the need to stay on-topic when streaming, and I kinda liked it.undefined or... you know... youtube gaming could work stream the world is watching you... maybe not procrastination hobby twitch3 -
I hate all of this AI fearmongering that's been going on lately in the main stream media. Like seriously, anyone who has done any real work with modern AI/ML would know its about as big of a threat to humanity as a rouge web developer armed with a stick.3

The park, under a tree. Preferably beside a lake or stream.
There can be people present, so long as they’re not too loud and don’t ask what I’m doing, hit on me, or try to chitchat.6 -
Still can't stream videos absolutely smooth on Fedora. Tried Chromium, Firefox and every fckin' plug-in they keep asking for. Half the stuff either just keeps loading or buffering. And the moment I give up and switch to Windows, everything just works. Why are we not building better stuff on linux? *Sigh*8

After ten hours of programming work, what could be more relaxing than watching a stream about programming?
When I mentioned that in the chat, the streamer reacted with this here:3 -
I'm curious:
How many of you that drive listen to the radio? How many stream their music (Spotify, Apple, etc)?32 -
I'm soon going to be crossing the path into the world of Linux with my first install.
So here's my device specs:
Toshiba Satellite L755-S5256
RAM: 4GB
CPU: i3-2310 (2.1ghz)
I use the device to stream movies and TV onto my TV (through HDMI cord) since the TV can't connect to the internet.
Any suggestions for a simple and light weight distro I could use? Thanks everyone in advance!10 -
Going through some terrible shit in life atm.. Didn't open devRant for a while and sure as the sun the stream made me smile.. Thanks..3

Watching a play via stream from a relative cringing my fucking ass off.

Why the f*ck is it so hard to setup an online live radio on NodeJS but making a freaking Google hangouts clone is not.3
-
security fiasco due to a malicious npm package:
Because of a bitcoin miner present in event-stream npm module (https://bleepingcomputer.com/news/...), my entire team and I had to scan all our nodejs apps, repos and the most excruciating one, all node_modules folders across all our dev machines and servers, to see if event-stream and flatmap-stream is present, then not just delete it but update a bu**load of upstream dependencies which internally used event-stream. All due to one malicious package which was hidden several layers beneath.
And, this happened almost 8 months after the aforesaid vulnerability was first found.10 -

For shit's sake, data stream processing really is only for people with high throughput looking to do transformations on their data; not for people aggregating <10Gb/day of data.

Fucking hell! Finally I found a good solution for a problem I never knew how to solve it in a beautiful way. For everybody interested: c++20 provides functionality for synchronously writing to a stream from multiple threads.

Trying to install Linux on an HP Stream 7 has been way more difficult than it should have been, even when you take into account that it's a 32-bit processor with a 32-bit EFI!
First off, the only thing I've been able to get it to boot right of the bat is Android x86 and BlissOS... kind of. You would think that Android x86 would be perfect for a tablet, right? Nope, performance sucked sooooo bad.
After reading some forums, I was finally able to get Ubuntus to load up... with the limiting factor being no on-screen keyboard.
So... at the moment I guess I'm stuck with a useless Windows tablet, and probably will be for a long time (you know, since 32-bit architecture is being dropped)6 -
Was asked to setup a stream from OBS to GoToWebinar.
Just found out OBS supports LoveCams.com but doesn't support GoToWebinar...
Idk if its OBSes fault, GoToWebinars fault, or someone elses fault but I think it's funny that it would be easier for me to stream to lovecams and ask our attendees to watch there4 -

WFH is nice, esp when you can spare a separate room for work at your house/apartment. VoIP is also not a problem, it's even better is several ways than the real thing, as you can chat with multiple people at the same time without dragging them off their desks. Even better - screen sharing sessions.
However, there's one thing I don't understand. Why would anyone do video calls? I mean.. why...? What's the point? If I'm on metered network I'll be charged extra only because I'll have to stream out my ugly face to people who don't want to see it and stream in all the other ugly faces I don't want to see. My voice will become laggy, I'll miss out on some details, and all that because of some completely unnecessary overhead.
So why would you want me to enable my webcam? And why do you feel the need to show your face to everyone else? Why is this necessary...?21 -
Sorry guys for the lack of content on the stream last week. I'll be back with more fire than ever I promise.2

Found this one after 4 hours of debugging... Want to screw with other teams? Shove some UTF-8 BOM characters into JSON responses consumed by Node (and other frameworks as well). Watch as they scramble to find why JSON.parse() fails on seemingly nothing.
Background: BOM markers are hidden characters that indicate text stream information to applications. They are not ignored by many JSON parsers and throw exceptions that don't appear to make sense.1 -
VNC, RDP, X11 Forwarding, WTF.
There is not a single good product to "stream" a linux desktop to a different machine without being logged in in "parallel".
They are all complicated and/or suck big time in quality.2 -
Do you think it's possible to get enough of a following on YouTube and twitch to fund your living expenses and use the rest of your free time to work on your own studio projects?
For example I'm a VR and AR game developer. I do the whole shebang for game development and design on my own. I could stream play throughs of the current game I'm working on as a weekly thing and create tutorial videos for other developers and students for more content on my channel, but to also stimulate growth in the VR and AR industry. I'd in a way be creating my own market. I could also stream the development of the art assets and whatnot.
Could possibly make some money from the ads at first. Maybe even within the game?
Idk I'm trying to avoid having to get a job anywhere else if I can float my own success as an indie start up. So thoughts on this rant please?5 -

IMHO, the Amazon Fire Stick represents a "race to the bottom" for media devices in terms of interface design, functionality and app support.
They join the Apple TV waiting there since the second generation device.
Everything you could ever want to stream is either a few hundred clicks away or on a different device. -
Change my mind. Golang can be more difficult than it needs to be sometimes:
Find the first "non-null" value in an array:
Go:
Optional<String> result = Stream.<Supplier<String>> of(
() -> first(),
() -> second(),
() -> third() )
.map( x -> x.get() )
.filter( s -> s != null)
.findFirst();

I don't understand why some people take computer science as their stream, while they don't know anything in it. Those majority people in most of the universities take computer science seeing other people's rush. In my University 70 % of the people even dont know the ABC of programming. These mad annoying people just ruin the merit list. 😠😠8

Got an email regarding the recruitment process in an MNC. They had asked me to select location and stream for my job. Every stream they had sent was only testing and its types. Heeyyy! On my journey of becoming a full stack dev, I have finally achieved a tiny milestone. I made an app which lets you live stream your laptop's audio, and the web interface will let the users listen to it.

Have any of you fin devs out there on the interwebs had any experience with building social networks using `Stream`??
I am looking into their API for use in a golang project of mine but I am unsure about a few things...
1. Reliability
2. Scalability and the cost of it
3. General API quality, in Golang specifically but any comments are great.
It's a stretch I'm sure but if there was a place that folks would know it would be here @ devRant1 -

I'm implementing a REST API that returns data as it's fetched from MongoDB.
If it's returned all at once it would be a JSON a string like [{}, {}, ...]
But what about when it's returned as a Stream?
Node by default seems to just return it as {}{}{}{} but that can't be parsed by the program that requested it?4 -
Ah, the joy of finding code that looks like a never-ending stream of characters. Because hitting "Enter" is just too much effort, right?

So tokio-rs had me really confused on how to properly use split streams and sinks to read and write io, so I made a simplified interface to save others (and myself) some trouble.
Check it out, it's called tokio-simplified, and it's on https://crates.io/crates/...
I like it, you can place as many callbacks as you want to respond to each frame from the stream, and use as many mpsc::senders as you like to write to the sink.
And as a bonus, you can have a filter callback called before any other, to choose whether or not a frame should make it to the others, and bonus feature: that callback is 0 cost against just passing it as a for_each on your stream.
Hope it helps some of you on your journeys to Rust -

My new microphone arrived.
I used to own Razer Seiren, but it died few weeks ago.
Now this cheap 60 dollar mic bundle's sound quality is on par with that Razer Seiren.
It just lacks all the functional buttons and knobs, and of course, a switch for illuminating logo.
Does anyone stream or run a YouTube channel here?
If so, what kind of content?
PS: Please, no links.2 -
Is a company bad if it puts constant pressure on developers to quickly deliver bits and pieces of functionality the client desires with little attention to quality? The focus is then on pleasing the client at the most shallow level by providing a stream of quick fixes, only to be met with an equal amount of bug reports, even after the full testing stack by the testing team.5

Web dev (JS, node) question since there are so many here... I think...
I want to return a JSON array as a stream so the server passes whatever the DB returns but also normalize each record.
Also the data is across several collections. Is it possible to return this in a single request?
And how do I add in error handling? If there's an error in between the user already has part of the data?3 -

Update on the HP Stream tablet:
I finally realized that I could have a microSD card in the device with the Onboard package on it to install on a LiveUSB in order to install anything.
Due to another 'ranter's suggestion, I started with all the Debian spins, but none of them had a graphical .deb package installer (which is really strange).
I finally went back to Ubuntu MATE, which does have the Onboard application already installed (which I'm not sure why I didn't notice that the first time), and it's now officially installing...
More updates at 11. -
I've had a hard time getting on board with Google using the "Yes, and..." approach in design sprints. IMHO, it's tough to apply a stream-of-consciousness from improvisational theater to building software. Two completely different arenas.
Personally, I've always applied the "No, because..." approach, designing pessimistically/programming defensively, while still being innovative, creative & empathetic. I get the psychology of public criticism making teammates butthurt & stymieing future contributions...but that's maturity.10 -
Is there a web browser for Linux that supports hw accelerated video decode?

There are so many bug reports for this, but all seem to be "won't fix"/ api is unstable or some other problem

Came to college to finally study the subject I love, to code in peace. After finally getting through the rigorous admission process in which you study stuff that isn't actually relevant to the stream you'll be choosing in college. And all of this for what to join in the vain pursuit of getting a good CGPA. All of this is literally sucking the time out of my life. Fml

It's so frustrating to explain rxjs pitfalls to the manager.
To avoid the diamond problems and glitches caused by combineLatest and debounceTime(0), I decided to use single stream with nested reactivity.
Then the manager asked me to use withLatestFrom instead of combineLatest.
Sure withLatestFrom makes sense to the original author, when the original author is able to remember the reactive graph and put proper dependencies to combineLasted/withLatestFrom accordingly, but anyone else who touches the component later needs to retrace the reactive graph to avoid the glitch. Sometimes it's just impossible when many dependencies are derived from combineLatest+debounceTime(0). When no one is trained to code reactively, I don't expect people to know where to put a dependency. After many trials and errors, the only way to avoid the diamond problem is to use nested reactivity where child streams are created within root stream each time root stream emits.
The mentioned manager put all sorts of side effects in observable chains. The manager keeps saying the stream is too large when their subscription functions (sometimes nested) are way worse with litered mutations everywhere. Anything in observable can be traced by go to definition but tracing side effects usually requires global searches.
Recently, he put startWith to the end of a synced stream to fix a bug where button would collapse when there is no content (initial null emission). Rather than fixing the default height, he thinks using startWith(defaultLabel) is a good idea. Of course, he doesn't know that a synced stream should only emit 1 value on new subscription and that extra emitted value will cause rxjs glich down the pipe.

Is there a way to force VLC to stream a second monitor when there isn't one?
So trick the PC into thinking there is a second monitor and then have VLC stream that one?
