Manager: Why haven’t you shipped any code today? It’s almost lunch.
Dev: Stuck on a bug
Manager: I’ll help you
Dev: Please don—
Manager: Have you tried thinking outside the box?
Dev: …Dear god please end my existence
Manager: You could try stack overflow too, have you ever used that site before?
Dev: 😮 🔫
Manager: Also sometimes bugs are caused by npm modules so rule that out first
Dev: *On knees praying to Zues for forgiveness and/or conveiniently placed lightning strike*12 -
Stackoverflow, Quora, hacker news, and any other {{insert random blog/site here}} makes me feel like an ant amongst a bunch of perfect super coders (okay exaggeration)... Thanks devrant for making me feel normal! 😂 #comfort4

Dev: Hey, do we have a Google cloud machine running?
Me: No we have AWS remember?
Dev: Okay..
Me: Why do you want a gCloud?
Dev: I had this large stack of files and want to put them somewhere, off of my laptop. I just feel comfortable using Google than AWS.
Me: Umm.. there is Dropbox for that sort of stuff. Not high performance servers running our services.
Dev: ...
Dev: (After a moment) Yeah, why didn't I think of that? :/
Me: Seriously???
I think he forgot to have breakfast today.18 -
From Mr Robot
“Most coders think debugging hardware is about fixing a mistake.
But that's bullshit.
Debugging’s actually all about finding the bug.
About understanding why the bug was there to begin with.
About knowing that it’s existence was no accident.”
— ELLIOT1 -
There comes a moment in every coders life where he must prove his programming chops by solving an arbitrary problem for one of their random relatives. If they fail, they have brought shame to their family name. But if they succeed, there is no greater glory.
Random Uncle: "Hey my wifi isn't working. Can you fix it?"
Me: Restarts laptop. Wifi works.
Uncle: "Wow nice job!"
Indeed. There is no greater glory.3 -
Where dafuq is the tabs or spaces?!?!?
They are trying to teach people to code... But they don't use any tabs or spaces in their examples. Wtf. You are breeding shit coders.17 -
Probably the best funny thing that I saw on Internet today. 😝joke/meme tattoos love coding html5 programming coders life css html coders exist geeky coding geeks10

Please, do not "learn to code".
The industry is already filled with too many shitheads who think they're the next bill gates.
Most people have no business coding anything.
You might hear big tech screeching about "tech shortages" and that "we need more coders" but in reality, they're trying to flood the developer market with shit-tier coders so they can pay less wages, because they're too greedy to pay their workers a decent salary.
We don't need more coders.
You're not special.
Your bootcamp project looks like dogshit and 10,000 other people wrote the same thing only better.26 -
The sad story of a coders life in india..
So apparently my friends don't understand the basic concept of "enjoying" coding. This comes from a 1st yr undergrad. Everyone here view coding as some subject or some college course that is done just for the sake of grades. When they get free time, they waste it away smoking up at some filthy old building mocking us coders. Sadly I share a room with such idiots. The problem is that coding is something we love, something we do because our hearts yearn for it, because we are addicted. And because of my useless roommates, I'm losing out on my friggin friends. I swear we coders are always looked down upon way too much. We aren't usual nerds, we just don't believe in wasting our time on tinder or Facebook or smoking pot.10 -
Just wanted to say cheers to all those coders among you who make sure their login is encrypted, their passwords are hashed and salted, their codes are tested and their forms are code injection safe.
No client will understand what you did, so take my props for it! After all, its our responsibility to make sure software is secure. That's all :) -
Last night was my first ever MeetUp to meet other coders.
Open my laptop and power up...
Widows is applying updates.... 30 fucking minutes!
Cringe.7 -
Pretty sure someone already posted it here, but I don't have the patience to check. Just want to share it.

Everyone’s a remote worker at our company by default. Literally no HQ or central physical office to report to. As it should be for most people who are knowledge workers or coders. Why commute and pollute and all that nonsense? It doesn’t make sense anymore for a lot of people like us.14

Most coders think debugging software is about fixing a mistake. But that’s bullshit. Debugging is actually all about finding the bug, about understanding why the bug was there to begin with. About knowing that its existence was no accident. It came to you, to deliver a message, like an unconscious bubble floating to the surface, popping with a revelation you’ve secretly known all along.

I feel bad for the coders who work for cia developing those spywares.
They have to live with the fact that they / their dear ones will also be a victim of the tool they created.
Imagine living with that fact... must be depressing.4 -
Totally useful!
Master CS Degree.
More knowledge then most coders.
More knowledge on what’s going to come.

Happy new year fellow coders, developers, may your next deadline be reasonable. Have a productive night with less bugs and more coffee!1

Learning CSS .
Understand CSS shadow today.
Did a little practice..
And come up with this. It's too easy..
Doing more practice just because it's fun 😄 I think that's why most coders code ! Because it's fun 😊 though I know it's not even "programming language" 😂9 -
There are two types of coders: those who shorten function to fun, and those who shorten function to func.17

How does programming influence a programmers daily life?
1. We start counting from zero.
2. We observe software more than using it. What is the algorithm behind it? Which Data structure is used?
3. Greeting people with "hello world".
4. Assigning variables to people.12 -

I got a friend who studies engineering and really loves it and i do software development with a passion.
And we both love to chill with some drinks every now and then.

Some fun facts :
☻ Programmers spend approximately 30% of the time surfing the source code 😁
☻ Progress in programming can be classified into 4 stages:
(a). Complex Programming
(b). Making Progress
(c). Slow Progress
(d). Stuck
☻ Programmers have a tendency to report their problems incompletely
☻ The main error messages, execution times and runtime compilation errors and the average time to solve them
☻ The software maintenance consumes more than 50% of the effort
☻ Ctrl C, Ctrl V, and Ctrl-Z have saved more lives than Batman tbh😇3 -
Every University should make it a requirement that CS and Info technology juniors and seniors spend time on devRant. It is an education in real world coding and business challenges. No surprises. Easier transition to being a pro.

Alright so I have to create an API that communicates with a web interface and three different back end systems. And I think my customer might have thought that I am actually Jesus because they didn't have any docs for their systems and their policy did not allow me to gain access to their internal testing environment (which. Drove. Me. NUTS) and expected me to create this API by pure guesswork basically. After teaching the customer's internal IT guy how to capture requests between the systems I managed to somehow got the prototype working. I am proud and sleepy. ... Mainly sleepy2

Junior coders want to argue about database design saying an employee table in the database does not need a start date and end date because the requirements don't say that. I am doing gold plating he says. He didn't care that I had been doing this over 10 years and he 0 years. Oh yea and by the way I have never been given specific requirements about database design.4

Everyone and their mother has a JavaScript framework and the NEWEST cool npm module you're an idiot for not using.

Pissed off. Planning on imposing a company wide hook that prevents you checking in code with a @Generated annotation. Seriously, never even heard about it being used outside of auto generated code until some bozos here seem to have started using it to silently drop complicated classes from test coverage metrics. Is this a thing with new coders these days, or are my lot just cowboys?!
No more, anyway. Sometimes it's convenient to be able to pull rank.8 -
At the first company I worked for out of college, the CEO was a bit like a child. Whenever he came up with a new feature he wanted to add to the product, it had to be done asap otherwise we were going to "miss the boat." Every single time.
So rewind to a few years ago. It's a normal day at work and then suddenly my team lead and the CEO call my team into the conference room. The CEO starts telling us about this industry conference (we were in online dating) that was happening and this flashy new company dating company was going to be showing off this awesome search feature.
Naturally, our CEO concocted a Hail Mary plan of how our company was going to upstage this company and get all of the press to write about us instead. Basically, the "plan" was for us to build a brand new search feature of our own, in the week before the conference, and then he stated that the press would "have to write about us because ours will be better."
Everyone on my team knew it was ridiculous but we were pretty young and naive so we busted our asses to get this search feature out the door in the short week. The Friday before we stayed until like 2 AM. It was a little bit fun because the people on my team were cool, but the whole situation was absurd and no one, except the CEO, thought this had any chance of working.
Annnnddd in the end we didn't get an ounce of press, the search feature was pulled from our site, and the "awesome" company that we were so worried about getting all the press is out of business. But hey, we did get it done!1 -
Confession: every now and then a Google search for a JS function or something directs me to W3schools. And I proceed to use it. And I'm not afraid to admit this!!7

I am this die hard fan of House, MD. A medical Based Drama TV series.
I find soo many similarity between how doctor House diagnosis patients and how we coders debug code.
Why the flying-fuck is there not a similar show for engineers?

Why god why.
I just pray for this miracle to happen.

What people don't get about drinking and coding is this.
Coding and development is very similar to art. You've to be creative in your solutions. You've withdraw all emotions and concentrate. And you've to find your own creativity.
You have drunk artists all the time, why not drunk coders?11 -
Game for coders or really anyone interested in programming where you have simulated network on which you can perform attacks11

I am seeing more and more of these political statements and politically correct bullshit on coders forums up to the point where i got to the conclusion the *phobic people are being harassed for sharing an opinion of their own and attacked most of the time.
Are the *philic people actually themselves *phobic, and thus attacking anything that might conform their uncertainties? Is that the case?
Because unless you act upon your opinions you are not guilty of anything. If another is offended by your opinion isnt that an oppression of the sort?
I fear this will one day become a standard in forums that *phobic people should be more attentive to their opinions and shit i mean we are coders if we see beautiful code who the fuck cares what the coder is or represents if ur code is good i fucking love you and thank you. Now on the other hand my opinion of what you represent or what you are offends you? Well fuck sounds like a personal issue!
Fucking twats!13 -

Design patterns are not a catalogue for programmers problems.
The amount of brainless coders that just slap around these patterns because they were taught that it will magically solve everything is amazing.5 -

Coding is essentially problem solving with almost immediate feedback. Video games are also problem solving with almost immediate feedback.
That's probably why most Coders love video games. That and the fact that most people love video games anyway. -

not really a rant but the more i code, the more fun it gets. i havent really dived this deep into coding and allowing myself to take most of my time doing it has made it more interesting for me. now i want to learn more and start creating personal projects aside from real university projects. people may think its weird that i have been devoting a lot of my time writing code, but i guess they just dont understand the difference of coding for grades and coding for fun.
we are all in it for fun!1 -
Shouldn't be there a position called "Document Developer"! who's job is writing documents throughout the whole sdlc processes? Also expanding comments written by the coders. The only skill needed is English MVC framework!2

Hi my dear fellow coders, I have a small request for you.
If you are among those coders who are working on microchipping people / quantum dot something, tracking people, classifying people, AI, ML or any other such software which is going to harm or cage us or take away our freedom. Please stop doing so.
Why I came out with this rant?
I myself am working on a covid-19 screening app which would rate people based on symptoms and if they seem high risk they would not be allowed to enter unless they do a covid-19 test. I am tracking their movement and the requirement is to restrict people’s movement.
My conscience says that this is incorrect and and I should not be a part of such things which take away the freedom and liberty of people.
I am stopping it now.13 -

build a hacky mess that was shit technically but became a “hit” with users.9 -

Is it highly likely that, those at high position of management are more greedy of money and posses less ethics and values, than those who actually build the company ie engineers ?
I had seen, it's always the top management who get away from mistakes/ issues but generally it's those who develop the company at core i.e. engineers again, are sidelined or considered responsible for the mistake, when management don't know a shit about anything, or sometimes engineers just follow what management says and management fucks their asses wide even if the management did something wrong.
Who do you think actually build companies/product. Engineers or management or marketers/sales people, who eats fat cheques ??
I remember from silicon valley, when hooli reverse engineered Richards idea and developed their own prototype named Nucleus. Pushed their engineers to beat pipe Piper and when their product turns out to be awfully terrible and extremely fucked like a burned dick with broken balls, they just fired their entire nucleus division5 -

Service status pages that poorly reflect actual service status are so annoying. Ex. GitHub is having a lot of latency issues with processing updates and like 5 people in my office noticed it while their status page still says everything is fine.
This isn't to explicitly call out GitHub since many service status pages behave like this, but it definitely shows a general weakness in these health checks. I've seen similar issues with tons of services, web hosts, etc. Monitoring is definitely hard but will hopefully keep getting better.1 -

Other peoples' code... (in C++)
I am finding what some people consider good code is not as described. I found a class that provides strings. Great it gives me paths and stuff. I incorporated it in a new project.
segfaults
Hmmm, it must have an init function... It does, but not in the class. It has a friended init function:
friend init_function(). If this function is not created and called external to the class then the class will segfault...
okay...
I implement this. I use code from another project that implements this correctly. The friend class allows the private constructor to be called to create the main instance of the class. So its a fucking cryptic ass singleton. I look at this class. It uses a macro to decide what to function call in the class. The class already has function names for each call it needs to make. The class is literally a string lookup table. I vow to redo this shitty code, someday...
I start to wonder what other fragile code I will find. Not long later I keep getting errors on malloc. Like any malloc that is called results in a segfault. The malloc is not at fault though. I run valgrind and find a websocket library is returning an object a different size than the header file describes.
WTF...
Somebody has left an old ass highly modified definition of the websocket header in a location in that I include headers (partly my fault). I eliminate that from my include path. All is well, everything behaves. I will be making sure this fucking header is not used and it is going to die. Wasted a bunch of time.
Lessons learned: some code is just fucked and don't leave old ass shit you tried laying around.5 -
What do people here use for blogging and hosting? Everything I can find from searching suggests self-hosted Wordpress, but I am cautious because of its reputation in the dev world and since all the guides I have found so far are directed at non-coders. Thanks in advance for any opinions 😊8

So we finished our requirement ( barely) for a new client. Next is data modelling and system design.
We started with data modelling. Unfortunately the lead developer does not know the difference between database and data modelling.
me: hey bro, we'll do the database and stuff later, now let's focus on data modelling.
him: (acting like he knows) yeah I have developed a sample design for the "data model".
me: no this is database design.
him: what's the difference?
me: dude, they're totally different. Okay, simple explanation data model is what you want to store, whereas DB design is how you store it.
him: So, if I am not wrong, it's implied that you know what to store if you are talking about how to store it.
me: but you don't know what it is you want to store yet. And one of them precedes the other.
him: Okay, let's start with DB design.
me: What?????? you want to build a house without a plan??? That's it for me I am done !!!
I left the project yesterday, later I heard that, the team members are coders, who think that developing a software is all about coding and fixing errors. -
Dear other coders.. i press my enter key quite frequently. You do so, too.
Please don't make windows that jump into focus out of nowhere, asking me something important. I won't be able to read it and I'll just accept the default action, because I'll coincidentally press enter when your dialog spawns 100% of the time.

What attracts coders to open source libraries?
If you ever contributed to open source projects, what was the reason?
I am contributing to my supervisor’s package which is really handy for biophysicists (quantum mechanics). I wish we could get more attention from scientists in our field and attract people to contribute to our project.13 -

Today, I have an article on css-tricks - and I'm just really grateful and happy. So, that's all. It's fun to see things come full-circle.
If you like live-style-guides and tearing down the boundaries between "creatives" and "coders" - you might like it!

i want to hone my skills by starting to work on a new project but it feels like i have writers block (coders block??) ugh

First Rant...
Why the fuck do I get on a C++ interview the question if I now Javascript......everytime.... NO I DON'T WANT TO KNOW JAVASCRIPT!!!
Real coders code in C/C++ and not hipster javascript. Am I alone???(probably)10 -
Clean Coders Hate What Happens to Your Code When You Use These Enterprise Programming Tricks
https://youtube.com/watch/...
fantastic presentation all around
its like proving in realtime how i know those certain people who complained about a single const i used are in fact, total noobs and poor programmers!
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡4 -
COFFEE is an issue all coders face so I made a video to tell you my solution. Watch it if you want..More don't i don't mind..

Competed in my first Competitive Coding contest on Codeforces. I could barely solve 1 question, and even in that I couldn’t got error in some pretexts. Still I was satisfied that I got the algorithm right.
But how the fuck are the top coders reading the problem and submitting the solution within 3 minutes !2 -
Imagine what PHP could be, if its native API wasn't still based on a C-like pile of turds, abused by below average coders...
On can just dream 😢
I like PHP a lot, but man, the PHP job offerings I've seen...
99% WorstPress, Typo3 or Joomla in companies that exist for 15 years and have just recently started to use Git.
Even with a 6 figure salary I couldn't bear the desolation of working for such single-celled organisms.7 -
devRant gets a mention in our latest episode of Two coders, one mic! https://www.blooware.co.uk/podcast1
-
Hobby coders, what’s your favourite vintage platform to develop on? I recently started dipping my toes into vic20 and Commodore 64.
Feelin like a time traveller 🛸3 -
Starting to invite coders who lost their job for camping. Have cooked for large groups (120 people plus) before. And then, after days of eating and resting, my army can counter attack.... 😁 *mwahaha*
-
I am an stupid human being. How many times should I experience the same problem to learn from it? I don’t know why should I possibly be obsessed by latest MacOS updates? This fucking error ruined my day. Those fucking idiot coders in Apple must use some unit tests (including transparent iTerm in second display). Fuck you all. My £1600 Macbook pro is literally useless until some fucking coder finds what is wrong in their NEW update.3
-
Why don't hackers or super coders in tv/movies use mouse? I can't even think of working without a mouse!6
-
I just thought. The next generation of coders are going to curse the software we praise. Well be using JavaScript to drive cars and ATMs (if we aren't already). We're gonna talk shit to dev youngsters about compilers, shims and fucking cross browser compatibility and how good they have it. Some of us will be stuck in the past keeping bullshit legacy code alive. Besides that, the world is gonna be a fucking awesome place (rip Mahammad Ali)
-
Stop shitting on my codes sir :(
I know I didn't give you strict guidelines but pleeeeeease do not code it this poorly. These are obvious mistakes.... -
K&R style Brackets are so goddamn shitty. I hate hate hate hate that style. It makes code so goddamn hard to read. And for what gain? You write "less" lines of code? So what? Who gives five fucks about that? Readability is key for coders.7
-
sitting alone on my desk for 5 fu****g days making my agency's landing page. Replaced all lorem shit ipsum with my feelings. Pray for my lazy co-workers3
-
I think since this is a platform for coders, the number of healthy tips is restricted to boolean values, otherwise it wouldn't be healthy.
If you know what I meant.
#whoops -
To the experienced coders here on devrant: Any valuable tip(s) for newbie programmers (independent of language)?
My suggestion: Enable 'format on save' in your IDE. Seriously, how did I survive without this?!5 -
All South African devRanters, if there are atleast a few on here... Have any of you heard about the WeThinkCode program in Johannesburg?3
-
Home grown coders or college grad coders?
For those of you that taught yourself too code, or those who studied in schools, which style has prepared you the most for the real world?
I've met so many self taught coders who can program circles around some of my colleagues, but does a computer science/programming degree ensure you success over those who may know more?
Thought it would be an interesting discussion for you lot, personally I'm a mix of both but primarily a undergrad coder.
Keep it clean :)8 -
I hate when I just want to reference a camelCase variable or fileName.class in my .docx Word documentation and it actually bothers to try to correct me. Word is an application made by coders, I don't see why it can't figure out that I'm not wrong when I type ".toString()"2
-
If you want this app better, stop posting crappy content or content you have to end up explaining.
Simple, isn't it?3 -
TLDR: releasing mental pressure
How are you doing it guys, i was trying to find project where i could find out how it works, recently followed flask tutorial for blog, and checked out chat with flask-socketIO, but have overwhelming feeling like everything was already developed and Am so much behind ( like learning web in 2018 - what im doing here ) + like its not enough, all are spamming about how AI will take work also from coders -

Why are JavaScript coders called engineers (ie front end engineers, node engineers) but dotnet and Java are called developers?17
-
@dfox Quick feature request. Checking for duplicate comment or rant and hiding them. On erratic connections impatient coders like me press submit button multiple times making duplicate posts!10
-
What’s your guys thoughts on people calling Scratch and other block coding programs coding and calling themselves coders or programmers for just knowing scratch.7
-
What really grinds my gears?
To teach german coders that there is no plural of the word "information", over and over and over and over again!
There is no informations. There is only bits of information or information.
Darn idiots!!!8 -
The great thing about version control is that you can seamlessly work alongside other coders through the use of dozens of diverged and cryptically named branches.2
-
My co founder/ co-coder and I always have funny and wierd conversations. It got to the point that we've started a podcast. They're short and it would mean the world to us if you'd listen and give us feedback as you lot are all trustworthy codey people!
You can find the podcast here: https://anchor.fm/blooware3 -
The moment I find the solution I get so happy that I tell myself let's solve this problem another time. Then afterwards I get depressed because I was wrong.1
-
I want a little study that correlates as much as possible programming languages with alcoholic beverages their coders consume mainly, and how alcoholic are they too on average.2
-
Working on some documentations on MS word and I'm pressing ctrl+space for auto complete!!🤣🤣🤣 Not only that ctrl+click for multiple cursor!!! 😂😂😂😂😂2

I can promise you all this... Artificial Intelligence’ silicone valley... will not be in California, the industry will be in west Michigan... instead of the and valleys beaches of California it will be the hills and lake shores of Lake Michigan... true artificial intelligence of the movies will be “born” there. The liberal developers and hipster coders can stay out in California.. while the rest of us will be over her in Michigan. I promise you this will happen, give it 10 years8
-
Someone from top company (German Automobile) commented that Indian coders are good but are not Craftsman in their development. I was very confused about that comment .. but if it's true . How should I improve it.3

A friend who just got into ML recently.
"Dude, did you know how amazing ML is??"
"I'm training a computer to give out outputs, basic AI dude"
"Dude logistic regression is the shizz"
"You heard about backprop mate?"
"ANN is the next big thing. I'm currently working on one of the biggest AI project now"
So I casually ask him whether he completely his project or not. He proudly showed me a 9 lined code he copy pasted from Google (search for neural network in 9 lines) and said, "Dude I trained my laptop with some advanced AI techniques to give out the perfect XOR outputs"
He rounded off values like 0.99 to 1 and 0.02 to 0 to make it look perfect.
#facepalm1 -
People not even reaching 100 points in the dinosaur game: 😭
Coders using inspect element to get infinite points: 😈😈2 -
Are any of you worried/think that coding could become a blue collar job with just the sheer number of people from various fields trying to make it big in CS, and quality of coders going down day by day etc.?3
-
There are two types of coders out there:
int main() {
// code here
}
int main()
{
// code here
}
Which one are you?8 -
"String reverse with recursion" - I know it's a small thing for seasoned coders but back when I was starting It opened tons of possibilities.
-
I joined in 2011 when there were 3% architects/technologists. Even those were PMP certified.
Now we have 80% archs/techs/coders/devops/cyber, with aws/azure/java/db/cyber certs and no PMP.
Even now managers go off-site for a week to some exotic location and come back to present the architecture.1 -
You know a combination of trustworthy coders and retaining improvements would make my having to debug opencv build process unnecessary
Just saying god -
Check out my business vlog... Or don't I don't mind, we are coders in a room.

BUGS AND CRASHES IS A REMINDER TO EVERYBODY THAT THINGS WORKS BECAUSE *WE* HAVE TO POWER TO FIX THEM.8

This team of coders sharing with us how consumer driven contracts using Pact helped them detect client-breaking changes quite early in the cycle.
Then the facepalm moment follows. Suddenly my "boss" takes over and says - "You know what, we do better than this. We use a tool called cucumber and test the interface in every build...."
The presenter: "Oh yeah... You surely are ahead of the curve. You don't need pact. Cucumber it is..."
End of the story. -
Don you hate when someone from {gender}coders or any other group post photos to all social media channels "coding", inspiration quotes for that specific {gender} , and what not, they even posted their github .. but then .. see pic.
And all you see in their github are exercises from courses and books, nothing else.15 -
Can't understand why some coders feel so threatened by python.
Couldn't get the program right. Classmate yells from behind: "Thats why you should have learnt java" -
A TRIBUTE TO CODERS WHO JUST STARTED MAKING DISCORD BOTS USING PYTHON WITH PYTHON 3.9
When you just got the hype of making Discord Bots using Python ...
You update to Python 3.9 ... And then Go to CMD (for windows users) and type ... "pip install discord.py" ... You are very happy ... thinking finally You can add your custom bot to your server and then ... even pip tells you that you are noob at discord.py -
I’ve realized that coding is really a stupid waste of time. Why you wouldn’t use a visual coding system or ai code assistant or any of the other code methods that are not coding is just dumb. Here’s to the end of coding and similar systems that makes this brain dead skill a thing of the past. I hope my comments didn’t anger any coders especially since I think coding is really stupid.6

Comment one thing which you never want to miss in your life as a programmer.
For me it is semicolon " ; " ........ :D6
