Git was designed to be used in a decentralized fashion, and as such has a lot of additional logic steps to deal with this.
The way people use git today only with centralized storage such as github makes it a inferior solution compared to SVN

The statistical "scene" (if there is such thing) grew so much in recent years, because now there is a single language that everyone can use and easily share code via packages.
Before everyone used a different propietary and paid statistical software, and could not share code.
